India’s dream of winning a third World Cup title, at home at that, lay in tatters after a meltdown saw them crash to a six-wicket defeat against Australia on Sunday in Ahmedabad.

Australia thus won a record-extending sixth World Cup title, stretching their dominance in the tournament that started way back in 1975. They’ve now won six of the last 10 ODI World Cups with their first coming in 1987.

Travis Head made a match-winning 137 off 120 balls as Australia chased down the 241 run target in 43 overs.

India’s hopes were raised when Australia lost three wickets for 47 but a 191-run partnership between Head and Marnus Labuschagne (58*) shut the door on the opposition.

Earlier, put in to bat, India scored 240 runs with Virat Kohli and KL Rahul scoring fifties and Rohit Sharma putting on an onslaught at the start. But the Aussie seamers produced a superlative show to keep the Men in Blue down to a below-par total.

Sent in to bat on a slow and dry pitch, skipper Rohit Sharma provided India a flying start with a 31-ball 47 but Australia fought back, snapping three wickets to reduce the hosts to 81/3.

Kohli (54) and Rahul (66) then tried to resurrect the Indian innings, adding 67 runs before Pat Cummins removed the former. It was a struggle thereafter, as India failed to find the boundaries.

On a track where stroke-making became extremely difficult as overs passed, KL Rahul’s composed 66 off 107 gave India a push but he would have ideally liked to bat till the end having done the hard grind.

For Australia, Mitchell Starc (3/55) picked three wickets, while Pat Cummins (2/34), Josh Hazlewood (2/60), Glenn Maxwell (1/35) and Adam Zampa (1/44) were the other wicket-takers.

India vs Australia stats:

137 – Travis Head scored 137 runs in the final and 62 runs in the semi-final to be named Player of the Match in both. Previous players to be given the accolade after the semi-final and final were Mohinder Amarnath (1983), Aravinda de Silva (1996) and Shane Warne (1999)
