India vs South Africa: KL Rahul's ton, Indian pace dominance and other talking points from Centurion Test

Team India ended the year 2021 on a high by breaching yet another fortress. After conquering Gabba in their historic tour of Australia, followed by the victories in London in the England Test series later this year, India got their tour of South Africa off to a terrific start with a victory in Centurion — venue where the hosts had lost only twice since their readmission in 1991.

South Africa is the only nation where India are yet to win a Test series, with a 1-1 draw in 2010-11 being their best achievement as well as the only instance of them avoiding a series loss. However, the clinical manner with which the Virat Kohli-led visitors wrapped things up inside four days, with Day 2 getting washed out without a single ball bowled, suggests things could end a little differently this time.

Before we set our sights on the New Year’s Test that will be taking place at the Wanderers in Johannesburg, a happy hunting ground for the Indians where they have won thrice in the past, we revisit some of the key talking points from the Centurion Test:

KL Rahul continues to shine overseas

At the start of the year, Rahul wasn’t a certainty as a Test opener given Rohit Sharma had sealed one of the two slots and there was plenty of competition from the likes of Shubman Gill, Prithvi Shaw and his own state teammate Mayank Agarwal for the other.

At the end of the year though, it’s hard to imagine anyone else walking out to open alongside Rohit than the man who’s currently serving as skipper Kohli’s deputy for this series. A stroke of luck on the tour of England led to Rahul getting to open alongside Rohit and since then, he’s produced a series of consistent performances, his 123 at Centurion being the latest. It also further cemented his status as an overseas specialist, with six of his seven Test tons now having been scored abroad.

Rahul started cautiously after India opted to bat at the Supersport Park, but started to express himself not too long after as the Proteas attack started to lose their focus. He remained calm even as the visitors lost two quick wickets after lunch and kept accumulating runs at a steady pace, forming vital partnerships with Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane as India ended the opening day on a commanding 272/3.

It was only fitting for him to get to the three-figure mark along the way, and later be adjudged the Player of the Match.

Pace battery at the fore of yet another victory

Indian cricket owes a huge debt of gratitude to former bowling coach Bharat Arun, ex-head coach Ravi Shastri as well as current Test skipper Kohli for shaping the fast-bowling quartet that has gone on to play an integral role in India’s success in overseas Test campaigns in the last three years.

The trio of Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj hunted like a pack on the spicy Centurion pitch that threw uneven bounce into the mix and made life for batters even more difficult beyond the opening day. All three were relentless in the lines and the lengths bowled to the Proteas, who folded for less than 200 on both occasions as a result.

Shami would become only the fifth Indian pacer to cross the 200-wicket mark in Tests with his match haul of 8/107, including a five-for in the first innings, while Bumrah was terrific in his evening spell on the fourth day, breaking a stubborn fourth-wicket stand by getting rid of Rassie van der Dussen with what can be described as the ball of the match.

What aided the bowlers additionally was the cushion of a 300-plus total in the first innings as well as a stiff target in the second. The Proteas attack produced a much-improved performance in the second innings to dismiss India for 174, but unfortunately, their batters couldn’t quite support their hard work.

India’s senior batters continue to disappoint

While the openers and the bowling unit performed admirably in the Centurion victory, the same unfortunately cannot be said of India’s Nos 3, 4 and 5.

Kohli, who finished a second consecutive year without an international century, got off to a promising start in the first innings as did Rahane, the latter falling short of a fifty by two runs. And as has been the case often in recent years, both inexplicably found a way to see themselves back in the dressing room after settling themselves at the crease with some delectable strokes.

Kohli was once again guilty of poking at wide deliveries after being tempted into driving, finding the outside edge in both essays. Rahane followed his 48 with an attacking 20 before playing a shot too many, hooking a short ball straight to the man at deep square leg.

Pujara was unfortunate to have been dismissed first ball by Lungi Ngidi in the first innings, getting a bat-pad deflection to short leg. He decided to grind the bowlers out on the fourth day, getting to 16 off 63 deliveries before poking at a wide delivery that resulted in yet another catch for Quinton de Kock.

A total of 137 runs across two innings from the senior trio certainly does put a lot of pressure on the rest of the batting unit as well as the bowlers.

A debut to remember for Marco Jansen

A lot of eyebrows were raised after Dean Elgar announced that they would be handing young Marco Jansen an international debut, including him in a lineup that had Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi as the other frontline seamers and Wiaan Mulder as the bowling all-rounder.

Five days later though, Jansen’s selection over Duanne Olivier stood vindicated on the part of the team leadership. Though he was off to a nervy start, conceding a boundary off a full toss on his first delivery in international cricket and struggling with his lines on Day 1, he was a different bowler in the second innings as he used his left-arm angle as well as his height to good use to help restrict the Indians to a meagre 174 on Day 4.

Perhaps the think-tank wanted some variety by bringing in a left-armer, which could’ve been the reason along with Olivier’s fitness issues, which was the official explanation from the selectors.

His figures of 4/55 in the second innings included the prized wicket of Kohli — the man he had bowled to at the nets in Jo’burg three years ago — which might just help him get retained in the XI for the remainder of the series and serve as a launchpad for him to cement his place in the side.

Elgar and Bavuma’s grit

A large part of the blame for South Africa’s loss at a venue considered their fortress would go to the insipid batting performance across the two innings that saw the Proteas crumble under intense pressure from both ends and lose wickets in clusters.

There were however, a couple of performances that stood out, and gives the team some hope going forward. Temba Bavuma mounted a rescue in the company of de Kock on the third day, guiding them to 109/5 at lunch after they had been reduced to 31/4, and it was his half-century, along with a fightback from the lower order, that helped the Proteas avoid follow-on and finish close to the 200-mark.

Skipper Elgar’s 77 in the 305-run chase could’ve been considered a standout knock from the match had it not been for Rahul’s ton, given that the southpaw’s gritty innings came at the face of some intense fast-bowling from Bumrah, Shami and Siraj while Rahul had scored a majority of runs on a day the South Africans weren’t quite hitting the right areas.

Elgar stood tall even after the Indians got rid of Markram early, and his presence at the crease gave Proteas hope not just of salvaging a draw, but even pulling off an unlikely win. However, his exit, along with the dismissal of de Kock, meant it was only a matter of time before the visitors wrapped things up on the final day.

India vs South Africa: A day of two collapses at Centurion – one expected, one unsurprising

Eighteen (18) wickets fell on day three in the first Test at Centurion. Ordinarily, such an instance in the sub-continent would provoke conversation regarding quality of the playing surface. Spin-friendly pitches aren’t good enough for Test cricket , apparently, never mind if batsmen have lost the art of negating turn and bounce.

The Centurion pitch isn’t your regular raging turner. Ever. In fact, even in 2018, when India were touring South Africa in the middle of a drought, the grass at Supersport Park was baked to a crisp. And yet, it didn’t turn enough as India lost on a track that Faf du Plessis termed as more “Mumbai than Centurion”.

What the Centurion track does offer, in 2018 and so in 2021, is bounce. It can be uneven and disconcerting for the batsmen, home and touring alike. India had discovered the dry, cracked surface too much to handle, when a tank-like debutant Lungi Ngidi bundled them out here on the previous trip.

It was déjà vu for Indian batsmen on day three at Centurion then. In two successive Test innings at Centurion, Ngidi has picked 12 wickets against the same Indian batting line-up. 6-39 in the second innings back in 2018 and now 6-71 in the first innings this tour, the pacer has put much-the-same Indian batting line-up to the sword. There is some differentiation between the two contests though.

To begin with, there’s the pitch, which has had a proper green tinge from the beginning. There is no more drought in South Africa, and it has helped keep the track lively and replete with bounce. The cracks are still there, a hallmark of this surface, and Ngidi enjoyed bowling on this wicket after rain had washed away day two. Even so, perhaps nobody saw India would collapse so quickly, losing 7 wickets for 49 runs.

Extra bounce did in both KL Rahul and Ajinkya Rahane. Rahul wouldn’t mind too much, but how costly will that dismissal prove for Rahane, who is batting on borrowed time? The combination of Rabada’s movement, Ngidi’s pace, and the iota of additional bounce both can extract on a two-paced up-down pitch, was too much to handle for the Indian batsmen. R Ashwin and Rishabh Pant next, and India were 296-7. Maybe it was unexpected on the day, but this collapse was unsurprising too.

India’s batting strength, or lack of, has been the subject of national debate for some time now. It is quite a coincidence that when Indian openers have finally given a reason for cheer across Australia, England and South Africa in 2021 alone, the middle and lower order has simply faltered. So much so, some would say it is now beyond redemption.

Virat Kohli’s inconsistency (who knew this word could ever be used), the lengthy poor run of Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara, and Rishabh Pant’s rediscovery of his pre-2021 dubious form has meant that India has always gone in a batsman short in their last five Tests. Despite this flaw in strategy, which cost them in England, the team management continues to deploy it. Meanwhile, Hanuma Vihari and Shreyas Iyer sit on the bench twiddling thumbs.

The point herein is not to revisit that debate, for it seems never ending. Instead, it is to highlight where India might be missing a trick. To persist with a flawed strategy is always a risk, but there is also a fine line between risk and foolishness. South Africa knows well that this is India’s weak point. Despite their bowling attack lacking experience, they have enough capability – in Rabada and Ngidi – to exploit this weakness in home conditions.

It puts this whole series – and contest – into perspective. It is not so much a competition between bat and ball per se. Rather, it is a contest between Indian batting and South African batting. And therein, it is a contest between Indian bowling and South African bowling, to see who can take more advantage of the opposition lineup’s batting weaknesses.

Day 3 provided a fine look at how this series will progress. Any collapse the Indian batting suffers, the South African batting can suffer worse. Anything South Africa’s bowling can do, the Indian bowling can do better. In Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah, Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Siraj, the visitors boast a wholesome pace attack capable of taking advantage of the pacey conditions on offer. Add R Ashwin to the mix, and this is a bowling attack for anything South African grounds men can throw up.

Tuesday, then, was Shami’s day. Pace and movement, that beautiful upright seam position, for once he didn’t wait for the second innings. Shami did most damage at the top, and then returned to polish off the tail. He also dismissed Temba Bavuma, whilst he and Quinton de Kock were forcing a smallish fight back. This territory is where Shami’s Test bowling graph will proceed to – that bowling balance between attack and defence when the opposition is on top.

Defending with the ball is an art too; holding one end together when there is a mega partnership going on. India found themselves in that position in England a lot whenever Joe Root was at the crease, and they didn’t have an optimal solution to it. Why? Ishant Sharma, chosen for that role, is no longer the bowler he was. Shami will have to step into his shoes now, with Sharma at the fag end of his career, and it will be up to the selectors how to manage workloads.

Back to Centurion, and a 146-run lead going into day four should suffice as a platform. Kohli likes to put 400 on the scoreboard and go for the kill in the second innings, so India will look to do precisely that and take a 1-0 lead in the series. Yes, day 3 was a massive indicator of what the series’ result might be – a comprehensive win in India’s favour.

Anything else would be unexpected, but given India’s batting frailties, not unsurprising.

Dishonesty in Kabir Khan's 83 stems from its desperate need to cater to cricket fans of the 'Virat Kohli era'

There is definitely a thin line between crowd-pleasing and pandering, one that Kabir Khan’s 83 cannot bother to mind during its runtime of nearly three hours. The director's eyes are on the prize.

So it is only logical that in a film around one of India’s greatest triumphs on the world stage, he cuts to a curly haired boy called Sachin, celebrating India’s 1983 World Cup win by screaming, “Dada! Main bhi India ke liye khelega!” (Even I want to play for India, elder brother!). It is such a shamelessly servile wink at the Indian cricket fan in the 21st century (who also happens to be the target audience of the film) that everything else ceases to matter. It might be a throwaway moment, but it is also indicative of something fundamentally dishonest about Khan’s film.

Based on arguably India’s greatest achievement on a cricket pitch, one might ask if there was a need for 83 to constantly have one eye on the Indian cricket fan in 2021. So much so that a senior colleague next to me (inspired by the cinematic language of 83) began speculating whether we would also witness an infant Yuvraj Singh tonking a milk bottle for six from his crib. It does not have to make sense as long as the audience gets it, and applauds — seems to be Khan’s mantra.

The gaze of 83 seems to be actively servicing the Virat Kohli era of cricket. Yashpal Sharma (Jatin Sarna) growls about teaching Srikanth a lesson after getting accidentally knocked by him on the head. In a different scene, Madan Lal (Harrdy Sandhu) fumes in front of captain Kapil Dev (Ranveer Singh) after reading a newspaper piece calling the Indian team ‘lucky’ for qualifying for the semis. Even Singh’s Dev is shown crumpling hostile newspaper articles, and using them to clean his spikes. 

Now, I do not know how much of this is 'fact-based,' and I am also not saying there was no aggression in Indian cricket before Kohli’s emergence. But this attempt on the part of the makers to deify the players, instead of focusing on their mundane personalities, makes for an almost corrupt viewing experience. There is a particularly jarring scene with K Srikanth (Jiiva) singing praises of his captain as the tournament is still going on, especially ahead of the knockout stages where the story could have ended in whatever fashion. It is as if he is talking with the anecdotal energy of a 20th reunion bash, marvelling at their blissful ignorance with which they pursued greatness. There is no uncertainty in his voice, no fear, as if he already knows that India went on to win the ‘83 World Cup. Or he could not care less about who did. 

83 seems to be made with such retrospective wisdom that it is the most damning quality of the film. It never fully embraces how these were just 14 clueless men with noble intentions, completely out of their depth about how they were on the cusp of something that would shape a generation.

The way the team manager PR Man Singh (Pankaj Tripathi with a Hyderabadi lilt) says, “We won our freedom in 1947, but we still have to win respect!” seems to suggest that it was the plan all along to win the World Cup.

Ranveer tries with sincerity to ooze the confidence of a quiet competitor, which is probably what Dev surely was, but then again was he never daunted by the sheer audacity of what he was trying to accomplish? Did he never have doubts in his head that would outlast an Arijit Singh ballad invoking the tricolour?

I understand this is a masala film. I realise that the makers are catering to the lowest denominator, but can the simplistic choices trivialise what makes the real-life story so bloody compelling? 83 seems to answer that with an affirmative. Especially how Man Singh stands on the roof and salutes Dev’s innings shortly after calling him a 'freedom fighter.' The anecdote about a military bunker on the India-Pakistan border is impossible to see without the underlying subtext of the commodification of patriotism, and how the valour for India’s military has become a punchline for politicians and pop culture discourse. The tune might be slightly more refined here, but it does dilute the 1983 victory with some unnecessary agenda. 

Even the inclusion of the spouses, Romi Dev (Deepika Padukone) and Annu Lal (Wamiqa Gabbi), is in the most perfunctory sense. They are there to shed tears when their respective spouses are losing, and to clap when they are doing well. Did the players confide their fears or doubts into them before the final? Dev is only shown intently staring at the Lord’s stadium, while Romi gives him a spiel about competing for his five-year-old self, who understands the privilege of representing his nation in a World Cup final. Khan and his team (Vasan Bala and Sumit Arora) could have surely come up with something less banal.

What is most disappointing about 83 is how it looks like a glorified highlights package in the end. It never struggles with the mindset of 15 unlikely 'heroes.' Instead, we see Tahir Raj Bhasin’s Sunil Gavaskar mouth, “Yeh saala bol raha hai paper khaa jaayega agar hum jeet gaye toh,” as if he recently got a pep talk from Kohli. Also, the many, many reaction shots of Mohinder Amarnath (playing Lala Amarnath) going through broad emotions — proud, angry, tensed and therefore furiously smoking his pipe, celebrating. So satisfied is the film with this casting coup (of sorts), that they go overboard with it to the point of annoyance. 

83 never weighs in on the cluelessness about what these men were about to accomplish (as much as their opponents and the pundits around the world). None of the players seem like real people. It is a free (?) country; everyone can do whatever they like. But by appropriating one of India’s greatest sporting triumphs, Khan has ended up disrespecting the very fable around the World Cup win in 1983, and its legacy. It is only a problem if the cash registers are not ringing, right?

Day 2 report: England were hit by COVID-19 dramas within its support staff on Monday before their batters sustained another top-order collapse at the Melbourne Cricket Ground as Australia moved within sight of a series-clinching victory in the Ashes.

Before play even began on Monday, Cricket Australia called for calm after a COVID-19 scare involving England’s support staff resulted in a 30-minute delay to the start of the second day of play in the third Test.

Australia were bowled out for 267 as the home side grabbed a first-innings advantage of 82 runs, before England struggled to 31-4 in its second innings at stumps on Monday.

England seamer James Anderson gave a masterful display, claiming the key wickets of Marcus Harris (76) and Steve Smith (16) in his tally of 4-33 off 23 overs.

But England’s batters were soon under attack again. Mitchell Starc (2-11) dismissed Zak Crawley, caught behind for 5, and Dawid Malan, leg before without scoring, in consecutive deliveries.

Debutant Scott Boland (2-1) delighted his home crowd of 42,626 roaring fans by removing opener Haseeb Hameed for 7 and Jack Leach without scoring in the penultimate over of the day.

With Ben Stokes and Joe Root at the crease, England had lost four wickets after just 12 overs and still required another 51 runs to make Australia bat again.

“On the bowling front, I thought we did really well to stick at our task throughout the day,” Anderson said.

England’s all-time leading wicket-taker said the tourists were “pretty pleased” to bowl Australia out for 267.

“We knew that last 12 overs were going to be pretty tough with the new ball. But even so, to lose four wickets was really disappointing,” Anderson said. “I don’t want to get into much of a bowlers-versus-batters sort of thing because we’re a team here and we’re all working hard to try to get better.”

Anderson said it was his best bowling performance in Australia since 2010.

“I was in a really good rhythm. Late in the first session, I felt like I was going to get a wicket every ball,” said Anderson, 39.

Australia’s Harris was celebrating his first half-century of the series.

“It can be hard when the team’s going well and you haven’t quite contributed like you want to. Talk starts about your spot in the team,” Harris said.

Harris said the support from the coaching staff and selectors had been “amazing” during his lean run of form.

Harris said the crowd of 42,626 fans on Monday “felt like about 100,000” when Australia’s bowlers claimed four wickets late in the day’s play.

“That was a great atmosphere. That’s something you dream of as a kid to be a part of,” he said.

Earlier, Cricket Australia’s chief executive Nick Hockley said there was no need to change current plans, which include staging the fourth and fifth Tests in Sydney and Hobart, respectively.

“We just need to remain calm and get the facts,” Hockley said.

In a day of early drama, Cricket Australia released a statement confirming the COVID-19 outbreak within the England camp, which delayed the team’s arrival at the MCG and caused a 30-minute delay to the start of play.

“Cricket Australia has been informed that two members of the England cricket team’s support staff and two of their family members have returned a positive COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Test,” the statement said.

“The affected individuals are currently isolating.”

Australia captain Pat Cummins was unable to play in the second test after becoming a close contact of a COVID-19 case.

Since the start of the pandemic in 2020, England’s tours of South Africa and Sri Lanka were abandoned mid-tour due to COVID concerns.

Australia lead the five-match series 2-0, which means England need to win all three remaining matches to regain the Ashes.

India vs South Africa: KL Rahul has found the batting groove he had been looking for

Here’s a statistic to begin with. On Sunday, KL Rahul became the first Indian opener to score Test hundreds in England, South Africa, West Indies and Australia. The legendary Sunil Gavaskar might have been part of this statistic, if he had played against the Proteas before retirement.

It is a weird statistical equivalence. As long as Gavaskar played, India didn’t need to worry about one end. He stood tall against the world’s most fearsome fast bowlers and conquered the most difficult overseas conditions. The quest was always to find an ideal opening partner for him. In comparison, let alone holding one end together, Rahul’s career as Test opener thus far has been quite patchy, and that is a very kind description.

Sample this. Five months ago, Rahul was not even in contention to start the first Test against England. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill had opened in the World Test Championship Final. Gill got injured, and Mayank Agarwal served as his replacement. Rahul, meanwhile, batted in the middle order in the warm-up against County Select XI. In fact, he was part of the Test squad solely by chance as India struggled for middle-order options.

With Cheteshwar Pujara- Ajinkya Rahane faltering, the intended plan was to use Rahul in the middle against England. It was only when Agarwal suffered a concussion that Rahul came back in opening contention. Fate presented yet another chance, and he hasn’t looked back since. In the ever-continuous merry-go-round that is India’s opening batsman, Rahul has managed to hold on, come back to the first-choice XI, and make the spot his own for the near foreseeable future. Credit to him where it is due.

In 2021, Rahul averages 54.62 in nine Test innings across England and South Africa. Compare this to the last 12 Test innings he played in 2018-19, he scored at a mere 17.42 against West Indies (home and away), and Australia (away). From 195 runs in seven Tests to 437 runs in four-and-a-quarter Tests two years later, it has been a marvellous turnaround, with a newfound balance to Rahul’s batting the hallmark of it all.

When he last exited the Test structure, this was a confused batsman, in the throes of poor form, struggling with poor shot selection and even poorer judgment. Recall the Australian tour in 2018 – he simply couldn’t leave enough deliveries, poking and playing at everything in the off-stump channel, whether it moved away or held its line. Rahul had been reduced to a walking wicket in the longer format. Why?

The answer is found in present-day cricket’s demands. Any batsman worth his salt, especially an Indian batsman, wants to play all three formats. Not everyone however can gain that elusive balance between white and red ball cricket, between IPL’s slam-bang and demanding overseas conditions. At least not as quickly as Virat Kohli – look how long it has taken Rohit Sharma to find his feet in Test cricket.

Rahul had arrived on the Test scene first, and his desire to excel in white-ball cricket made him lose that balance against the red ball. Is it any wonder that his poor form in the IPL (and subsequently ODIs and T20Is) coincided with his poor run in Test cricket? Rahul earns credit herein that he put his head down and worked out the flaws in his batting.

It helps when you know where the fault lies, and Rahul knew fully his struggles lay in the off-stump channel. Somehow he needed to find enough patience to curb his attacking pedigree and then the runs would come, whether batting at the top or in the middle order. This facet of improvement in his play was visible immediately on Test return at Nottingham – in the first innings he left 76 out of 214 deliveries faced. That was 10 short of the number of deliveries he had left alone in the entire five-Test series against England in 2018 – 86.

In that, Rahul took a leaf out of Rohit's book, or was it the other way around? It is hard to tell. For once though, India’s Test openers had found answers to their overseas problems, and the runs began flowing. Never mind the spate of injuries, and the continuing merry go-round, the latest opening pairing of Rahul and Mayank Agarwal has continued scoring runs.

On day one against South Africa then, Rahul left 186 out of 248 deliveries alone. Agarwal left 95 out of 123 deliveries alone. “To be honest, the plan was to be very disciplined. Only look to play balls on the stumps,” said Agarwal, after the duo had put on 117 for the opening wicket at Centurion. He scored 57 per cent of his runs on the leg-side. Rahul scored 43 per cent of his runs on the leg side.

That’s roughly 87 out of the 182 runs these two batsmen mustered on the day, and it explains why India had an upper hand on Boxing Day. If you watched the live telecast for much of the morning and afternoon sessions, you would have wondered out aloud if India were indeed playing South Africa.

Gone was the venom of Dale Steyn and Allan Donald, the sharp spells of Shaun Pollock and Vernon Philander, or even the penetrative acts of Lungi Ngidi and Kagiso Rabada from the last tour here in 2018. This was a listless Proteas’ attack, but it does not take away any credit from the Indian openers.

Precisely because South Africa did find their way back, and exposed India’s main weakness – that middle order. Pujara can’t seem to buy a run at the moment and Kohli is scoring thirties as easily as he used to score hundreds.

Rahul, though, stood like a rock, and dug India out of that troublesome passage, with Rahane fighting his own battle at the other end. Maybe the latter will provide us a redemption story on day two.

Day 1 report: England’s earnest dressing-room discussions about improving shot selection failed to bear fruit on Sunday’s opening day of the third Ashes cricket Test, as shambolic batting delivered a Boxing Day feast of wickets for Australia at Melbourne Cricket Ground.

England face more “honest” discussions after they were bowled out for 185 on Sunday. Australia reached 61-1 at stumps.

Admittedly England, humiliated in a 275-run defeat in Adelaide, faced a tough task to bounce back on Sunday. Australia captain Pat Cummins won the toss and invited under-siege England to bat first on a green-tinged, seaming MCG pitch.

England were 61-3 at lunch. By tea, the tourists were 128-6, having lost the key wicket of skipper Joe Root for 50.

England’s resistance with the bat lasted just 65.1 overs. World No.1-ranked bowler Cummins (3-36), spinner Nathan Lyon (3-36) and left-arm quick Mitchell Starc (2-54) combined to keep the pressure on England’s batters.

A loose shot outside off stump by Root, a questionable cut by Ben Stokes, and a wild heave by Jos Buttler will attract heavy attention from England’s press after another difficult day for the tourists, who trail two-nil in the five-match series.

Johnny Bairstow, who scored 35, said Australia was handed a huge advantage by winning the toss. But he conceded England’s batters needed to lift.

“Both teams were looking to bowl first. It was overcast with the weather conditions this morning and the pitch was green,” Bairstow said. “We’ve got to get a bit stronger and tougher with our dismissals. We spoke about that. That’s just being honest with ourselves.”

Asked if he was disappointed with the shot selection of Buttler and Stokes, Bairstow said players were instructed to play their natural games.

“Naturally the execution of those (shots) wasn’t there today. They and we will look back on (those shots) and probably reassess next time,” Bairstow said.

Rain delayed the start of play for 30 minutes before Cummins ripped through England’s top order on his return to the team after being ruled out for the second test at Adelaide due to being a close contact of a positive COVID case.

The skipper first removed Haseeb Hameed without scoring and then had Zak Crawley caught at gully for 12.

Dawid Malan added 48 for third wicket with Root, before Cummins was rewarded in the final over before lunch, as Malan was caught at first slip for 14.

Australia claimed another three wickets in the middle session, dismissing the dangerous duo of Root and Stokes (25). The departure of Buttler for three, after aiming a wild slog to deep mid-wicket off the bowling of Lyon in the last over before tea, summed up England’s struggles against Australia’s disciplined bowling.

World No.2-ranked batsman Root added to his side’s woes outside off stump by offering a catch to wicketkeeper Alex Carey off the bowling of Mitchell Starc at 82-4.

Stokes tried to lift England’s scoring rate by launching into an aggressive cut shot off the bowling of Cameron Green, but the left-hander was caught at gully at 115-5.

Debutant Scott Boland, playing at his home-state ground, claimed his first test wicket by trapping Mark Wood leg before to the delight of the 57,100 fans at the MCG.

Bairstow fell over as he edged a bouncer from Starc to gully at 159-8. Lyon removed tailenders Jack Leach (13) and Ollie Robinson (22).

David Warner and Marcus Harris (20 not out) shared an opening stand of 57 for Australia. Warner was caught at gully off the bowling of Jimmy Anderson for 38.

Harris required medical attention during the following over after being struck on the hand by a bouncer from Stokes, but survived to the end of play with nightwatchman Nathan Lyon to leave the hosts in the ascendancy again this series.

Boland, who is only the second Indigenous player to represent Australia’s men’s test-cricket side, said Australia’s bowlers worked hard to make England’s batters play.

“We tried to keep it really full in the first session,” Boland said. "Their batters were pretty conscious about trying to leave the ball so we tried to keep attacking them as much as we could and we were judging ourselves on how much we could make them play.”

3rd Test preview: Australia will give fast bowler Scott Boland a Test debut in the third Ashes match beginning Sunday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground while England has made four changes to its side.

Boland was brought in as cover earlier this week and received the starting nod when fellow fast bowlers Jhye Richardson and Michael Neser were ruled out because of muscle soreness.

Josh Hazelwood was already out as he continues to recover from side strain, meaning captain Pat Cummins and Boland are the two new inclusions to the Australian XI.

“Jhye and Nes were a little bit sore after Adelaide so we’ve decided to go with Scotty,” said Cummins, who missed the Adelaide test after being a close contact of a COVID-19 case. “It’s a luxury to have someone like him, fresh and ready to go.”

Boland will become the second Australian male indigenous Test player after fellow pace bowler Jason Gillespie.

Australia, who lead the five-match series 2-0, can wrap up the series and clinch the Ashes with a victory at the MCG.

England, meanwhile, dropped opener Rory Burns and paceman Stuart Broad, along with Ollie Pope and Chris Woakes.

Bowlers Mark Wood and Jack Leach will return to the starting side, while Zak Crawley and Jonathan Bairstow will play their first Tests in this series.

England also confirmed Jos Buttler will continue as wicketkeeper, rather than Bairstow taking over the gloves.

Buttler was in a confident mood Saturday at a Christmas morning media conference.

“We’re certainly not here to just take part and let 70,000 people enjoy another Australian victory,” Buttler said. “We have to fight back, we want to win the series and we want to win this Test match.

“I’m sure it will be a hostile environment here but that’s to be embraced and enjoyed, everyone is excited to be here. This is why you play the game because you want to be part of big occasions."

Veteran India spinner Harbhajan Singh on Friday announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. The 41-year-old played 103 Tests, 236 ODIs and 28 T20Is for Men in Blue. He scalped 294 wickets in limited-overs cricket.

"All good things come to an end and today as I bid adieu to the game that has given me everything in life, I would like to thank everyone who made this 23-year-long journey beautiful and memorable. My heartfelt thank you Grateful," Harbhajan Singh tweeted on Friday.

He played his last red-ball match against Sri Lanka in 2015 while his last ODI was against South Africa in the same year. His last game for India was a T20I against UAE in the 2016 Asia Cup. Since then he has not been picked for India.

'Bhajji' retires after scalping 417 wickets in 103 Tests at an average of 32.46. The 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 World Cup winner is also the first Indian to scalp a Test hat-trick.

Overall, Jalandhar- born cricketer played 367 international games and claimed 711 international wickets and scored 3,569 international runs.

3rd T20I Preview: Depleted West Indies won the toss and elected to bat against Pakistan in the third and final Twenty20 on Thursday.

Three more West Indies cricketers — raising the player total to six — tested positive for the coronavirus but the team decided to complete the Twenty20 series. The fate of the one-day international series starting on Saturday, however, was in doubt.

ODI skipper Shai Hope, left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein and allrounder Justin Greaves, along with assistant coach Roddy Estwick and team physician Akshai Mansingh returned positives in the latest round of testing on Thursday. That increased the positive cases in the West Indies camp to nine.

Players Sheldon Cottrell, Roston Chase and Kyle Mayers along with a support staffer were already in isolation in Karachi after becoming infected before the T20 series began on Monday.

West Indies, left with only 14 players to choose from, made two enforced changes: Darren Bravo replaced opening batter Hope and left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie was awarded his debut in place of Hosein.

Pakistan, leading the series 2-0, rested Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf to test its bench strength of fast bowlers, bringing in Mohammad Hasnain and Shahnawaz Dahani.

Virat Kohli press conference: ‘No communication on ODI captaincy call,’ reveals India Test skipper

Putting an end to speculation, Virat Kohli addresses the rumour of him skipping the ODIs next month that are part of the upcoming South Africa tour — "I am available for selection," he clarified at a press conference on Wednesday.

However, an underlying rift might have grabbed the spotlight wherein he said that he was contacted a mere one-and-a-half hours before the selection committee meet and told that he would no longer be ODI captain.

"I was contacted one-and-a-half hours before selection committee meet. The chief selector discussed the Test team. Before ending the call the selectors told me I won't be ODI captain and I was fine. There was no prior communication," Kohli said.

"After the meeting we had a brief chat and that's it. There was no communicated at all."

Kohli maintained his stance about being okay with BCCI's decision and it not affecting future games.

"I have taken a lot of pride in being the Captain, I've done the best as I could. My motivation to do well will not dip at all. One thing I will say about captaincy is I have been absolutely honest to this job," said Kohli.

He scrapped all notions of any communication with the BCCI about being rested. "This question should be asked to the people who are writing about this, not me. These are lies. I have not asked BCCI to rest me," Kohli said.

Curiously, this is in direct contradiction to BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal himself claiming that Kohli had asked to be rested for the ODI series against South Africa.

Kohli added that he was "very motivated" to win a series in South Africa. "We have not done that before. We will do our absolute best to to make it happen," he emphasized.

India Test captain Kohli,  who was recently replaced by Rohit Sharma as the captain of the ODI and T20I teams, was rumoured to have opted out of three-match ODI series against South Africa starting 19 January. As per the report, he had planned to take a short break for personal reasons.

According to a report in Times of India, Kohli had informed the Indian cricket board (BCCI) in advance that he would take a break in early January. Since the ODI series coincides with the first birthday of his daughter, Kohli had communicated that he could not participate in the one day series.

Over the last two days, speculation has been rife that not all is well between Kohli and Test vice-captain Rohit, who will not play the Tests due to a hamstring injury.

After Rohit was ruled out, reports emerged that Kohli will take a break from the ODI series in the Rainbow Nation to spend some time with his young family.

This was after Rohit was handed the reins of ODI and T20I teams last week in a terse BCCI press release while announcing the Test squad for the series.

Shortly before the T20 World Cup got underway in the UAE, Kohli had announced his decision to step down as India's T20I captain after the tournament.

Responding to the endless chatter, Kohli said, "A lot of things that happen on the outside are not ideal and not always how one expects them to be. But you have to understand there's only so much that you can do as an individual and we have to do the things that you can as an individual, in my control show. I'm very focused and very mentally prepared."

He also said, "We all know Jadeja's quality and he will be missed. But we have enough bench strength. As much as we will miss him, I am sure that will not be a deciding factor. India will miss Rohit's experience in the Test matches."

However, he added, "It is a chance for Mayank to show his. Jadeja's absence is a blow, I wish him a speedy recovery."

India will play three Tests against South Africa, starting 26 December, followed by as many ODIs in January.
