Raipur: Shreyas Iyer brings a huge reputation as a T20 batter and is poised to make a big impact in the remaining two games of the five-match series, said young India leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi on Friday.

Designated vice-captain Iyer will be back in action after being rested for the first three matches as India will have another shot to seal the series from being 2-1 up.

“It will make a big impact in our batting lineup,” Bishnoi told reporters during the pre-match press conference.

Shreyas amassed 530 runs in 11 matches of the recent ODI World Cup.

“He brings a lot of reputation in T20 cricket and has been in good form in the World Cup. As a senior player his experience will also help us.”

The 23-year-old legspinner has been the pick of the bowlers in the series, having grabbed 6 wickets at 19.66.

Bishnoi credited this to his skipper Suryakumar Yadav for giving the bowlers a “free hand”.

“As a captain, Surya bhai gives you a free hand, he gives you all the right to place the fielders, the length that you want to bowl but you have to deliver in your execution,” said Bishnoi.

“He has been doing great captaincy in last 2-3 matches.”

Bishnoi made his India debut against the West Indies in a T20 game in February last year and has featured in 19 T20Is so far, snapping 31 wickets.

With a number of senior players rested, Indian team features a lot of youngsters and Bishnoi said it is important to grab the opportunity and make a mark.

“It is a great opportunity for young players from both the teams because such opportunities come rare when senior players are rested. We have a great chance to win the series,” he said.

“We have a lot of young players so we will look to execute the plans, the focus will be on execution.”

Heavy dew has proved to be a factor in the last few games with bowlers finding it difficult to grip the ball.

India failed to defend 43 runs in the last two overs in the third T20I as Glenn Maxwell took the bowlers to the cleaners to steer Australia to a five-wicket win in Guwahati.

“We try to practice with wet balls. I have done well in the last two matches despite the dewy conditions. I try not to give loose deliveries. If a batsman goes for a shot then it’s okay, but if I bowl loose balls, that is not acceptable to me,” he said.

“I am happy with my bowling and I will try and win the series for India.”

The Rajasthan-born spinner, who was the leading wicket-taker in the 2020 Under-19 World Cup, has featured in four seasons of IPL, taking 53 wickets at an average of 27.26, playing for Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants.

“I learnt a lot. International cricket is the ultimate aim for everyone and it was my dream too. The atmosphere is different. In IPL, players get divided in franchises,” he said.

“Other players from different countries are also part of the team but here you play for the country so there are a lot of expectations.”

Mumbai: Veteran Dinesh Karthik was back at his vintage best to smash a quickfire half-century as Tamil Nadu overcame a jittery start to down Baroda by 38 runs in a low-scoring group E match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy domestic one-dayers in Mumbai on Wednesday.

Put in, Tamil Nadu were reeling at 52/5 when the skipper dig in with all his experience to rescue the team with a 51-ball 68 featuring nine fours and two sixes for his 40th List A fifty.

Tamil Nadu were soon reduced to 52/6, but Karthik held fort and put together a 75-run partnership with Shahrukh Khan (31; 39b) to help them go past 150.

Lukman Meriwala (4/21 from 7 overs) and Ninad Rathva (3/23 from 7.3 overs) were the pick of the bowlers for Baroda as Tamil Nadu’s innings lasted just 33.3 overs.

In reply, Baroda were shot out for 124 in 23.3 overs with T Natarajan leading the charge in his 7-1-38-4, while spin twins Varun Chakravarthy and R Sai Kishore sharing five wickets between them.

Padikkal on song

Karnataka batter Devdutt Padikkal continued with his silken touch in the format, scoring a 57-ball 93 not out to steer them to a seven-wicket win over Bihar in a group C contest at Ahmedabad.

Batting at No 4, Padikkal hit nine boundaries and five sixes as Karnataka made short work of Bihar, chasing down the 218-target in just 33.4 overs.

This was the India A batter’s fourth fifty-plus score in as many matches and he also has a century to his name to be the leading rungetter of the meet.

Openers Mayank Agarwal (28) and Ravikumar Samarth (4) got out cheaply but Padikkal and Nikin Jose (69) effortlessly took their team over the line.

Jagadeesha Suchith was the pick of their bowling as he returned with a tidy 10-2-27-3 as Bihar were restricted to 217/7 after Karnataka skipper Agarwal opted to bowl.

Sakibul Gani waged a lone battle for Bihar with a 100-ball 113 not out as wickets kept on falling around him.

Shashank slams 152, grabs five-for

Shashank Singh produced a spectacular all-round effort 152 (113b) and 5/20 in five overs as Chhattisgarh thrashed Manipur by 88 runs in a group B match at Jaipur.

Chhattisgarh lost their top three for only 16 inside nine overs after Manipur chose to bowl, but thereafter it was all about their No 5 batter Shashank who smashed 12 fours and seven sixes in his counter-attacking knock.

Skipper Amandeep Khare (88) also provided a fine support as the duo consolidated after the anxious start.

After the pair’s departure, Ajay Mandal (43 not out; 20b) propped them to an imposing 342/6.

Shashank returned to shine with the ball, grabbing a five-wicket haul as Manipur managed 254/9.

Samson flops again but Kerala win

Sanju Samson failed with the bat yet again as he was dismissed for a five-ball one, but Kerala had it easy in defeating Tripura by 119 runs in a group A clash at Alur.

Wicketkeeper-batter Mohammed Azharuddeen top-scored for Kerala with a 61-ball 58 as he, along with Rohan Kunnummal (44; 70b), gave Kerala a strong start with a 95-run opening alliance.

But Kerala suffered a middle-order collapse to be bowled out for 231 in 47.1 overs. In reply, Tripura folded for 112. Akhin Sathar, Akhil Scaria and Vaisakh Chandran took eight wickets between them.

J&K stun Delhi

Jammu and Kashmir’s new ball bowler Rasikh Salam (4/23) dismantled Delhi’s top order to complement opener Shubham Khajuria’s splendid 109 as they stunned Delhi by 75 runs in another group C clash at Ahmedabad.

Put in, J&K rode on their skipper’s century to post 299/7. In reply, Delhi were bundled out for 224 in 45.3 overs. Lalit Yadav was Delhi’s top-scorer (67) but none of their other batters could provide any resistance.

Pacer Jasprit Bumrah on Tuesday posted a cryptic message on Instagram, creating a topic for discussion among fans. “Silence is sometimes the best answer,” Bumrah posted on his Instagram story.

When it comes to social media, however, Bumrah has maintained a reserved demeanor, letting the ball do most of the talking. Even when it comes to interactions with the media, Bumrah rarely does those, barring a few pre or post-match interactions during India matches.

Jasprit Bumrah’s cryptic Instagram story.

It is unclear whether to whom the message was intended and in what context.

In August this year, Bumrah had made his competitive comeback after almost a year’s absence due to a back injury. He went onto lead India in the T20I series against Ireland in August where he took four wickets, and followed it up by scalping four wickets in the Asia Cup as well.

Bumrah recently enjoyed a productive ODI World Cup campaign, scalping 20 wickets from 11 matches.

India’s young bowling attack will be in focus when the hosts take on Australia in the second T20I of the five-match series in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday.

In the first T20I in Vizag on Thursday, the Indian bowlers had an off-day with Prasidh Krishna (1/50) and Ravi Bishnoi (1/54) ending up as the major victims on the occasion.

Arshdeep Singh (0/41) went wicketless in his four overs and so did Axar Patel (0/32) and Mukesh Kumar (0/29).

Arshdeep and Prasidh went for 10.25 and 12.50 runs per over while leg-spinner Bishnoi were carted around for 13.50 runs per over.

As a result of the bowlers’ below-par display, Australia went onto post 208/3 on the board, with Josh Inglis slamming a 47-ball century.

In a format like T20, it is not an uncommon sight to see bowlers getting the stick, but those three bowlers lacked imagination and variety needed on such surfaces on that day.

India’s ambition to double the series lead will depend a lot on them significantly improving their produce here.

It’s not an impossible task either as Mukesh showed. The pace bowler mixed up his deliveries well  the yorkers, bouncers, wide deliveries around off-stump and so on  to contain the Aussie batters.

So, the other frontline bowlers now have a route map to follow in the second match.

In their defence, one can say that many of them were playing top-level cricket after a gap, but such is the nature of schedule these days the players need to put their best foot forward in the first available opportunity.

It is particularly true in the case of someone like Bishnoi, who has been talked about as one to look forward to as far as the white ball formats are concerned.

But he was vastly disappointing at Vizag and looked rudderless once Josh Inglis went on the offensive against him.

Bishnoi will have to realise that he cannot rely on a sequence of googlies to make an impact as it can lead to a sense of familiarity in batters, and he will require drastic course correction here.

Prasidh too was equally underwhelming, more so because he was a part of India’s 50-over World Cup squad recently and had a chance to work with the top-tier players and coaches at nets.

However, there was no trace of that effort in his bowling as his attempt to purchase bounce from the track was treated with disdain by Australian batters.

However, India will have not much to complain about in the batting department as skipper Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Rinku Singh and Yashasvi Jaiswal displayed fine touch against the Aussie bowlers, though a bit second string.

Suryakumar, Rinku and Jaiswal met the quick-scoring demands of a high chase effortlessly, though Kishan took a few overs to settle down before hitting the overdrive.

India will hope for a similar fire from them in the second match as well, and will bank on Kishan to reduce the number of dot balls during his tenure.

He was able to accelerate in the opening game after making 21 off 19 balls but the left-hander would not want an encore of that in this match.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was run out in the previous match, and Tilak Varma too will be eyeing some runs against their name as they are part of India’s journey into T20 future.

However, while the focus will be on cricket, the eyes will be on the weather too. It rained in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday and there is rain forecast for Sunday afternoon as well. What’s promising is that the skies could very well clear up by match time, which is scheduled to start at 7 pm.

The Aussie camp, on the other hand, will be looking to build on a few nuggets of positives from the first match.

Inglis’ hundred, his first in top-flight cricket across formats, while coming in as an opener might have given them a breathing space on the road that leads to the T20 World Cup.

But the move to promote Steve Smith as opener might not have fetched the desired result in its entirety.

The veteran right-hander made a 52 off 41 balls, but he laboured to manufacture runs even on a smooth deck as Inglis’ daredevilry ably masked Smith’s struggles.

Like their Indian counterparts, the Aussie bowlers, except Jason Behrendorff, also could not apply the squeeze on the rampaging Suryakumar and company.

They will also be looking for a markedly improved outing in that department here and as part of that the Aussies might just give a go to leg-spinner Adam Zampa in place of Tanvir Sangha.

Squads: India: Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad (vice-captain), Ishan Kishan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Shivam Dubey, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Avesh Khan, Mukesh Kumar.

Australia: Matthew Wade (captain), Aaron Hardie, Jason Behrendorff, Sean Abbott, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Glenn Maxwell, Tanveer Sangha, Matt Short, Steve Smith, Marcus Stoinis, Kane Richardson, Adam Zampa.

Match starts at 7 PM.

Ahmedabad: In a major policy decision, the ICC on Tuesday barred cricketers, who have been through any form of male puberty, from competing in international women’s game regardless of whether or not they have undergone surgery or gender reassignment treatment.

The ICC said it was taking the decision to protect the integrity of international women’s game and the safety of players.

In a statement, the ICC said, “The ICC Board approved new gender eligibility regulations for the international game following a nine-month consultation process with the sport’s stakeholders.

“The new policy is based on the following principles (in order of priority), protection of the integrity of the women’s game, safety, fairness and inclusion, and this means any Male to Female participants who have been through any form of male puberty will not be eligible to participate in the international women’s game regardless of any surgery or gender reassignment treatment they may have undertaken.”

Gender reassignment and treatment have been a hotly-debated topic in world athletics for years. ICC arrived at the decision at its Board meeting in Ahmedabad on Tuesday.

Asked what was the trigger for ICC to bring about this change, a source said it was due to “cricket’s inclusion in the 2028 Olympics.”

“Since cricket will be an Olympic sport, it has to be governed by the Olympic guidelines. This gender issue is a huge one at global level. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has changed regulations and advised sports to implement regulations that are suitable for their sport, which is what we have done,” said an ICC source.

World Athletic (WA), the governing body for track and field and other running competitions, had also barred transgender women, who went through male puberty, from competing in women’s events at international competitions.

The policy took effect on 31 March, 2023.

WA also ruled that to compete as a woman, athletes must have a testosterone level below 2.5 nanomoles per liter (nmol/L) for at least 24 months before an international competition.

South African runner Caster Semeneya was barred from competing precisely for this reason as testosterone level in her body were more than the prescribed limit.

World governing bodies for cycling (UCI) and swimming (FINA) had also introduced the same regulation in their sport while World Rugby has an outright ban on trans women in international women’s rugby.

Read | British Cycling bans transgender women from competing in elite female events

The ICC, while firming up rules for gender eligibility for international women’s cricket, left the issue at the domestic level in the hands of the member boards.

“The review, which was led by the ICC Medical Advisory Committee chaired by Dr Peter Harcourt, relates solely to gender eligibility for international women’s cricket, whilst gender eligibility at domestic level is a matter for each individual Member Board, which may be impacted by local legislation. The regulations will be reviewed within two years,” said the ICC.

ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice said the world governing body had arrived at the decision following “extensive consultations”.

“The changes to the gender eligibility regulations resulted from an extensive consultation process and is founded in science and aligned with the core principles developed during the review.

“Inclusivity is incredibly important to us as a sport, but our priority was to protect the integrity of the international women’s game and the safety of players,” said Allardice.

Meanwhile, the Chief Executives’ Committee (CEC) endorsed a plan to accelerate the development of women match officials, which includes equal match-day pay for ICC umpires across men’s and women’s cricket, and ensuring there is one neutral umpire in every ICC Women’s Championship series from January next year.

Ahmedabad: The Indian pacers’ workload will have to be carefully monitored during the upcoming World Test Championship series against South Africa and England comprising seven Tests, said bowling coach Paras Mhambrey

India will play a two-Test series in the Rainbow Nation in December-January, followed by five games against England at home between January and March.

Shami (24 wickets in 7 games, 48.5 overs), Bumrah (20 wickets, 11 games, 91.5 overs) and Siraj (14 wickets, 82.3 overs, 11 games) did a lot of bowling in the World Cup. They have been on the road since Asia Cup in August-September.

“We will have to be very smart with the way we go forward in terms of managing the workload. These guys have played a lot of cricket, so we need to see how we want to go about it.

“We haven’t discussed it yet,” Mhambrey, whose contract also ended with World Cup, said during an interaction with reporters in mixed zone on Sunday.

Mhambrey has had a quiet yet impactful back-room presence as he devised strategies with the pace unit for various oppositions.

It will be interesting to see what will be Bumrah’s take on Test matches and whether his body will hold the rigours of the five-day game.

“We missed Bumrah for a major part, and you see the difference he brings when he is in the side. The way he has gone in this tournament especially, it’s massive.

“It has been challenging, but looking at the other side of it, it has also been an opportunity for us to work on the bench-strength,” the former Mumbai and India seamer said.

While the Indian team has a fantastic front-line of pacers, Mhambrey is also excited about the next crop.

“There is Mukesh (Kumar), Prasidh (Krishna), Avesh (Khan) and Kuldeep (Sen). I would look at it that way,” Mhambrey said.

The bowling coach termed Shami’s wicket-taking spree as incredible despite not playing the first four games.

“He (Shami) was incredible. He obviously hadn’t played the initial games, but the way he came back and bowled throughout the tournament was incredible.

“That’s not something we expected, but we always knew that he always has that positive impact on the game. He has been phenomenal,” Mhambrey said.

Australia are six time ODI world champions. No team has won more than two and here six out of 13 World Cup trophies sit in Australia’s cupboard. Mind-boggling as that record may be, even more incredible is their victory in the Cricket World Cup 2023, against hosts India. In India.

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

Everything coming into final was against Australia. They weren’t the form team. That was India with 10 wins from 10 matches. Their players didn’t rule the individual stats charts. It was India’s Virat Kohli who was at the top of run-scorers list and his compatriot Mohammed Shami led the race for the wicket-takers. They were away from home and at the world’s largest 1,32,000-capacity cricket stadium, amid an ocean of blue, that would bring even the best to their knees.

Do you know how they responded to that?

By winning the toss and opting to field.

The audacity to do that, in front of over one lakh people who sang Vande Matram in such sync that a battle would have been half won by then, is what makes Australia what they are.

The audacity and self belief never left Australia even if their golden generation left the team. It is what helped them recover from two straight defeats at the start of 2023 World Cup – against India and South Africa – to then script a nine-game winning streak that took them to the title.

In the all-important final, Cummins didn’t take the easy way out to bat first and escape the scoreboard pressure. They are the true professionals and Australians wanted to show that.

Stats: Australia’s record sixth title, Travis Head joins elite list and more

In the ’90s when Australia made mockery of India, which was far too often, we were always told a cultural change was needed to challenge the Aussies. We needed to be professional like them.

India have made massive progress but it is apparent there’s still some catching up to do. And it’s this element, to be able to successfully disassociate the emotions and feelings from the the job on hand, is what proved to be the difference in the final.

Once on the field, the Australians fielded with such energy that the boisterous crowd sitting in stands was no match. Travis Head epitomised that determination and energy with an excellent diving catch, running back at cover-point, to dismiss India captain Rohit Sharma and his 47 runs off 31 balls was the only reason India could even reach 240 after every other batter either surrendered or succumbed.

Photos: Australia bag record sixth title with win over India

Pacers Mitchell Starc and Cummins had faced a lot of flak for their lack of incisiveness with the ball and here they were wreaking havoc with reverse swing and discipline.

Cummins removed Kohli after the star batter dug deep, maybe a little too much, for a fifty and Starc swung the ball in the death overs to get KL Rahul and India’s hopes caught behind.

Eventually Starc had three wickets and Cummins two as India were bowled out for 240.

After suffocating Indian batters with their athletic fielding, lethal bowling and high tempo cricket, Australia doubled the pressure in the second innings.

Mid-innings entertainment, laser lighting or Indian Air Force’s show, nothing was going to intimidate the Australians.

15 came from the first Jasprit Bumrah over and the tone was set. Head, who terrorised India earlier this year in the World Test Championship final, was at it again as he smashed a match-winning 137. A clutch hundred in a chase that defied everything India threw at him. That showed maybe more than technique and skill, it is temperament that you need.

India did have some success, dismissing David Warner, Mitchell Marsh and Steve Smith cheaply, but the way Head played and how Marnus Labuschagne assisted him with 58 not out and dew in their favour, there was only so much Indian bowlers could have done.

Stands started to empty and the atmosphere was almost funeral-like. On the eve of the final, Cummins had said that their aim was to silence the Indian fans. The fact that this team would would achieve that in such convincing fashion is the story of this World Cup and world cricket.

India’s dream of winning a third World Cup title, at home at that, lay in tatters after a meltdown saw them crash to a six-wicket defeat against Australia on Sunday in Ahmedabad.

Australia thus won a record-extending sixth World Cup title, stretching their dominance in the tournament that started way back in 1975. They’ve now won six of the last 10 ODI World Cups with their first coming in 1987.

Travis Head made a match-winning 137 off 120 balls as Australia chased down the 241 run target in 43 overs.

India’s hopes were raised when Australia lost three wickets for 47 but a 191-run partnership between Head and Marnus Labuschagne (58*) shut the door on the opposition.

Earlier, put in to bat, India scored 240 runs with Virat Kohli and KL Rahul scoring fifties and Rohit Sharma putting on an onslaught at the start. But the Aussie seamers produced a superlative show to keep the Men in Blue down to a below-par total.

Sent in to bat on a slow and dry pitch, skipper Rohit Sharma provided India a flying start with a 31-ball 47 but Australia fought back, snapping three wickets to reduce the hosts to 81/3.

Kohli (54) and Rahul (66) then tried to resurrect the Indian innings, adding 67 runs before Pat Cummins removed the former. It was a struggle thereafter, as India failed to find the boundaries.

On a track where stroke-making became extremely difficult as overs passed, KL Rahul’s composed 66 off 107 gave India a push but he would have ideally liked to bat till the end having done the hard grind.

For Australia, Mitchell Starc (3/55) picked three wickets, while Pat Cummins (2/34), Josh Hazlewood (2/60), Glenn Maxwell (1/35) and Adam Zampa (1/44) were the other wicket-takers.

India vs Australia stats:

6 – Australia have now won a record six World Cup titles – more than any other team in history of the sport. They’ve lifted the trophy in 1987, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2015 and now 2023

20 – Australia have now won 20 World Cup titles in cricket. Men’s team has contributed six ODI World Cups and a single T20 World Cup (2021). The women’s team has won seven ODI World Cups (1978, 1982, 1988, 1997, 2005, 2013 and 2022) and six T20 World Cups (2010, 2012, 2014, 2018, 2020 and 2023)

6 – Travis Head became the sixth centurion in a World Cup final joining an illustrious cast that includes Adam Gilchrist, Ricky Ponting, Viv Richards, Mahela Jayawardene and Clive Lloyd

10 – After 10 straight wins in the World Cup, India suffered a defeat on the final hurdle. New Zealand suffered the same fate in 2015 and England in 1979

24 – Mohammed Shami finished the 2023 World Cup with 24 wickets – most from this edition. He was initially not in the plans for the World Cup but only came in after Hardik Pandya’s injury

3 – Mohammed Shami’s three five-wicket hauls are now the most for any bowler in a World Cup edition. Shami took 7/57 against New Zealand in the semi-final, 5/18 versus Sri Lanka and 5/54 against New Zealand at Dharamsala in the group stage

137 – Travis Head scored 137 runs in the final and 62 runs in the semi-final to be named Player of the Match in both. Previous players to be given the accolade after the semi-final and final were Mohinder Amarnath (1983), Aravinda de Silva (1996) and Shane Warne (1999)

3038 runs – India closed the 2023 World Cup with 3038 runs which is the second-most for batters from any side behind 3059 by England in the 2019 edition

4 – India mustered just four boundaries from 11 to 50 overs which is the joint-fewest by them in a completed innings since July 2011

2 – Between the 11 and 40 overs, India scored just two boundaries. It is the fewest by a team in middle overs this World Cup. It is also the first time India failed to hit a six in this phase in this World Cup

5 – Josh Inglis took five catches when Australia were bowling. It is the most by a wicketkeeper in a World Cup final

1 – It is the first time India have been bowled out in this World Cup

8 – Pat Cummins went without conceding a boundary from his 10 over spell. It is the eighth instance during the 2023 World Cup. He is the only seamer in this list

23 – Adam Zampa finished with 23 wickets from the World Cup. It is the joint-most by a spinner in World Cup history. Sri Lanka legend Muttiah Muralitharan took the same number of wickets in the 2007 World Cup

240 – India’s total against Australia is the same that England and New Zealand produced during their exciting 2019 World Cup final

765 – Virat Kohli ended his 2023 World Cup campaign with 765 runs which is the most by any player in a single edition of the World Cup. It was the first time that the 700-run barrier was broken by any batter in the World Cup history with Kohli going past Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 673 runs in the 2003 edition

5 – Kohli scored five consecutive fifty-plus scores during the World Cup and nine straight in ODIs. He’s scored five consecutive fifty-plus runs for the second time in World Cups. Besides Kohli, only Steve Smith has five straight 50-plus scores in a World Cup

50+ scores – Kohli has thus scored fifty-plus totals in the semi-final and final of a World Cup. He joins Mike Brearley (1979), David Boon (1987), Javed Miandad (1992), Aravinda de Silva (1996), Grant Elliot (2015) and Steve Smith (2015) with this feat

Veteran India batter Virat Kohli on Saturday skipped the optional training session for the second day in a row, after having suffered from cramps in Mumbai’s extreme heat during the semi-final against New Zealand.

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

Kohli opted to skip India’s optional practice session in order to remain fresh for the Cricket World Cup final.

India are scheduled to take on Australia in the final of the 2023 Cricket World Cup in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

Amid Team India’s hectic travel schedule, the support staff have their task cut out as far as managing players’ workload was concerned.

According to news agency PTI, Kohli along with India’s three premier pacers Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, were given a rest day and did not take part in the pre-final practice session at the Motera.

Kohli had a tough time battling cramps during his 106-ball century against New Zealand in the semi-final in Mumbai, which helped him go past Sachin Tendulkar for most ODI tons.

Kohli, though, did field for a good part of the semi-final during New Zealand’s run chase.

Kohli has had a successful World Cup with the bat so far, and is the leading run-scorer this edition with 711 runs from 10 matches.

Meanwhile, India captain Rohit Sharma had another look at the pitch on Saturday, and noted a small difference from the one when they took on Pakistan on 14 October.

“That wicket (Pakistan game), there was no grass on it. This wicket has some grass on it. That wicket looked a lot more drier than this one – I don’t know, maybe you know, I still haven’t looked today how the wicket is but from my understanding obviously it’s slightly going to be on the slower side.,” Rohit said at the press conference.

“It’s not going to change too much, but it’s always nice to see the pitch on the day of the game and then assess what you want to do,” added Rohit.

While there is a small chance that Ravichandran Ashwin could feature in the final, Rohit did not give any team news away just yet.

“We haven’t decided on the XI. anyone from the 15 can play. We will assess the wicket and decide on. We have to look at the wicket and then decide and of course the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition,” said the 36-year-old.

India captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid on Friday inspected the pitch at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, ahead of the 2023 Cricket World Cup final against Australia on Sunday.

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

The duo was accompanied by batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and fielding coach T Dilip while inspecting the pitch.

Rahul Dravid and Vikram Rathour had a quick look at the pitch, and the two, along with Rohit Sharma were involved in a discussion.

On Friday, the Men in Blue held an optional practice session in Ahmedabad, where Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja all undertook some batting practice.

Rohit Sharma did some shadow batting practice, even practicing the pull shot, before joining in for some batting practice. When Rohit put on his batting gear and started some batting practice, Rahul and Jadeja were done with their hits whereas Kishan was still batting.

Ravichandran Ashwin, who last played for India during the World Cup group stage match against Australia on 8 October, was involved in some bowling practice, and so did Prasidh Krishna.

Ashwin also had a close look at the pitch and had a discussion with the pitch curator too.

India are coming off a 70-run win over New Zealand in the semi-finals, with Virat Kohli (117), Shreyas Iyer (105) and Mohammed Shami (7/57) playing big roles in the win.

Australia, meanwhile, had to sweat it out before overcoming South Africa by three wickets, while chasing down 213.

India’s last World Cup triumph came back in 2011 when they had lifted the trophy on home soil. The Men in Blue will also be keen to break the 10-year ICC trophy drought, having last won a major ICC trophy in the 2013 Champions Trophy in England.

Hoss India will take on Australia in the final of the 2023 Cricket World Cup in Ahmedabad on Sunday (19 November) .

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

Australia defeated South Africa by three wickets in the second semi-final of the World Cup in Kolkata on Thursday.

India, meanwhile, had beaten New Zealand in the first semi-final by 70 runs at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, to reach the World Cup summit clash after 12 years.

This will be for the first time in 20 years when India and Australia will face-off in an ICC limited-overs tournament final, having last met in the 2003 World Cup summit clash.

India had locked horns against Australia in the league stage match of the 2023 World Cup in Chennai on 8 October. After Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja had helped India restrict Australia to 199, the Men in Blue found themselves in trouble at 2/3 during the chase. That was until Virat Kohli (85) and KL Rahul (97*) stepped up, building a 164-run stand for the fourth wicket before Rahul and Hardik Pandya (11*) eventually finished the match off in style.

Against South Africa in the semi-final, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc combined to restrict the Proteas to 24/4, before Henrich Klaasen (47) and David Miller (101) forged a 95-run stand to take them to 212.

Australia made a strong start in their reply, with Travis Heaad (62) and David Warner (29) forging a 60-run stand for the opening wicket. However, regular wickets saw them being restricted to 174/6, with Steve Smith (30), Marnus Labuschagne (18) and Josh Inglis (28) failing to convert starts. In the end, it was Mitchell Starc (16*) and skipper Pat Cummins (14*) that led Australia to a three-wicket win.

Ben Stokes is likely to seek a release from Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) keeping in mind England’s hectic red-ball schedule that lies ahead of him.

Stokes, who came out of ODI retirement to take part in the ICC World Cup, is set to undergo a surgery to deal with a nagging knee problem and will hope to regain fitness in time to lead England in their five-Test series against India in early 2024.

CSK, who won their fifth title this year after beating Gujarat Titans in the final, wouldn’t mind parting ways with Stokes given the England Test captain had made just two appearances last season and isn’t likely to bowl anytime soon. The Super Kings had secured Stokes for a whopping Rs 16.25 crore in the previous player auction.

England will play five Tests in India with the final match scheduled to be held from 7 to 11 March. Next year’s IPL is likely to be held from last week of March till end of May.

“Considering that the T20 World Cup is slated in the West Indies and the United States from June 4 to June 30, the hectic itinerary could mean that Stokes will find it very difficult to stay in India for better part of the first five months of the year,” an IPL source in the know of things told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Given the hectic line-up of events, Stokes in any case was unlikely to play full IPL.

IPL 2024 auction is scheduled for 19 December in Dubai and the ten teams will have to submit the lists of players they are retaining and releasing by 26 November.

In case Stokes gets the release, CSK will have Rs 16.25 crores freed for the auction and they could go whole hog for either spin bowling all-rounder Rachin Ravindra or pace bowling all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai of Afghanistan.

Lockie Ferguson likely to be released by KKR

New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson is also likely to be released by Kolkata Knight Riders, given his history of frequent breakdowns, according to Cricbuzz.

Ferguson was bought by Gujarat Titans in 2022 for Rs 10 crore but was later traded to KKR this year.

India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey believes that the hosts have the right bowlers who can be effective on different conditions and surfaces.

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

The Indian bowlers have taken the 2023 World Cup by storm so far, with the pace trio of Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj sharing 45 wickets between themselves. Apart from the pacers, Ravindra Jadeja (16 wickets) and Kuldeep Yadav (14 wickets) have also been equally impressive.

India’s impeccable bowling attack has helped the hosts remain unbeaten in the World Cup so far, having clinched nine wins in as many matches.

“In terms of the different skills, we have the ability to (take on) whatever challenge that is ahead of us. Maybe different surfaces, we have the bowlers to do that. And we’ve done it,” Mhambrey told ICC following India’s 160-run win over Netherlands on Sunday.

“We’re the only team who are going to play in nine different venues. So for us, it’s nine different surfaces, nine different challenges.

“So, we have the right bowlers to exploit these conditions, and they’ve shown that. All of them on a given day can win a game for their country,” stated Mhambrey.

Mhambrey went onto term Jasprit Bumrah as a “lethal” bowler whereas he complemented Shami’s seam bowling.

“Boom (Bumrah) is a very different action. Just look at the way he’s come back to the game (from injury). The set of skills, the unique action. He completely beats you. Now, he’s got both. He gets the ball in and gets the ball out. He’s become lethal,” the coach said.

“Shami is someone who has the seam (that hits) straight upright. You never know when Shami hits that seam, which way it’s going to come,” added the 51-year-old.

Mhambrey also noted Siraj’s versatility, saying: “Siraj has really kind of grown in the last couple of years. He’s understood his bowling, obviously coming through the ranks. He’s started using different set of skills, the wobble seam.

“Initially, he had the ball coming into right-handers but now, he shapes the ball away. He has the ability and smartness to use the wobble seam and that also worked,” continued Mhambrey.

Mhambrey was all praise for Jadeja’s accuracy, whereas he feels Kuldeep Yadav has improved on his technicality.

“His (Jadeja) ability is very simple. Ability to hit the deck, and hit the lengths spot on. Very accurate. Very miserly in terms of the way he goes about his bowling. Doesn’t give anything away to the batsman.

“Love how Kuldeep has gone about over the last couple of years. He’s done little bit of technical adjustment to his run-up, which has really helped him to add those revs,” said Mhambrey.

“His spin has gone up, speed has gone up. And, someone like a chinaman bowler who does that, doesn’t allow you to step out so easily,” he added.

Although Ravichandran Ashwin has played just the lone match against Australia in Chennai, where he finished with figures of 1/34, Mhambrey feels the all-rounder offers loads of experience to the team.

“Ash (Ashwin) is out and out a match-winner. Love the way he moves about, no airs about playing the game or not playing the game.

“Even when he’s sitting in the dugout when you have those chats with him, he’s always there to guide these guys and comes up with a lot of suggestions,” commented the former cricketer.

Playing in front of a home crowd in familiar conditions does have its advantages and the Indian team was expected to shine bright in the 2023 ICC World Cup that they are hosting in its entirety. India is regularly counted among the title favourites in ICC as well as ACC events, and more so when matches are taking place on their turf.

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

Few, however, would have expected Rohit Sharma’s men to dominate they way they have in the league stage of the World Cup, where they not only have won each of their nine matches so far and are currently the only team to not have lost a single match, but have done so in a ruthless manner.

Read | ‘Very clinical from game one till today’: Rohit on India’s WC journey so far

The latest get swatted aside was the Netherlands, whose World Cup journey came to an end with a 160-run defeat at the hands of what surely is among the most clinical teams ever assembled at cricket’s biggest event. And this was despite the fact that the Men in Blue weren’t functioning at the hundred per cent during Sunday’s clash at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in the final league match of the tournament.

The Dutch had humbled the Proteas for the second time in as many meetings across ICC events and would have harboured faint hopes of pulling off an even greater upset against the Indians on Sunday.

Those slim hopes, however, quickly faded once India crossed the 300-mark after electing to bat; Rohit and Co would end up with more than 400 on the board and the result was a foregone conclusion by then.

IND vs NED: India’s record ninth consecutive win and other stats

Unlike their meek surrender against Australia in Delhi, however, the Dutch did not go down without a fight against the Indians and ended up posting 250 on the board.

Looking back at the events of the 45th match of the tournament, we list some of the standout moments:

Rohit and Gill toy with Dutch attack

Skipper Rohit and opening partner Gill’s domination of the powerplay has been a key reason behind India’s tall scores — or their comfortable chases earlier in the group stage. The pair wasted little time in taking the attack to the Dutchmen, bringing up the fifty partnership in just six overs and blasting their way to 91 for no loss at the end of the first powerplay. The partnership would touch the century mark before Gill became the first Indian wicket to fall, departing for 51. Rohit too would bring up his half-century, collecting 64 off 51 balls that included two maximums.

Van der Merwe denies Kohli a milestone ton

Among the biggest talking points ahead of the match was the possibility of Virat Kohli breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most ODI tons by bringing up an unprecedented 50th century in the format on Sunday. And the fact that he would have achieved the milestone at the Chinnaswamy, his adopted home ground, would have made the feat even more special.

Kohli started rebuilding the innings after Netherlands had removed both openers, and the decibel levels at the venue were starting to build after he brought up his 71st half-century at a steady pace. Left-arm spinner Roelof van der Merwe, however, would end up silencing the “Kohli” chants by cleaning up the batting superstar. Kohli departed for 51 as India lost their third wicket with exactly 200 on the board.

Iyer, Rahul guide Men in Blue past 400

Iyer and Rahul went about scoring runs at a steady pace after Kohli’s dismissal, guiding India to 284 at the end of the 40th over without losing another wicket. Having enough wickets in hand gave Iyer and Rahul the license to go for the kill in the final powerplay.

KL Rahul celebrates after bringing up his century in just 62 deliveries during India’s ICC World Cup match against Netherlands in Bengaluru. AP

The acceleration would be particularly destructive from Rahul — who went from 37 in 31 deliveries to 102 off 64, bringing up the fastest World Cup hundred by an Indian along the way. Iyer was relatively sedate, bringing up his maiden World Cup hundred in 84 deliveries and staying unbeaten on 128 off 94.

India had produced one of its most clinical batting displays in recent memory with each member of the top five going past fifty, which surely is great news for their fans ahead of the knockouts.

Kohli and Rohit achieve rare feats

What was unusual in India’s approach with the ball against the Netherlands on Sunday was Rohit deploying a number of part-time bowlers, including Kohli as well as himself. Kohli and Rohit have collected bucket-loads of runs over the years with a number of centuries. For a change, however, the two would celebrate getting a wicket off their bowling on Sunday — a sight as rare as it can get in the current generation.

Kohli would end up dismissing Netherlands skipper Edwards, who was caught down the leg side off a delivery that would have been called a wide as the Chinnaswamy, which had wife and Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma in attendance, erupt in celebration. Rohit, meanwhile, got the honour of batting the winning wicket by having Nidamanuru caught at long on.

Nidamanuru fights back, delays the inevitable

Nidamanuru was the toast of Netherlands’ spirited performance with the bat on Sunday, smashing a 39-ball 54 against the country of his birth to help his side breach 250 before becoming the last batter to fall. The Andhra Pradesh native arrived at the crease after Jasprit Bumrah had cleaned up Bas de Leede with a lethal yorker. The Netherlands had lost their fifth wicket with 144 on the board, and the Indians were hoping to bowl them out for less than 200. Nidamanuru’s rearguard, however, ensured the Dutch finished with a more respectable score on the board even if they were ending up on the losing side.
