On Sunday night, the Indian team management – captain, coach, selectors, et al – would have heaved a sigh of relief. The international T20 season is over and they won’t have to make a couple of harsh decisions. You see Shreyas Iyer has given them all a mega headache going into the 2022 IPL season.

Prior to this series against Sri Lanka, he was sitting on the bench twiddling his thumbs. The experimentation in batting was going as per plan, and in that particular plan, Shreyas doesn’t find himself a spot in the playing eleven. He is a back up to Virat Kohli at number three, and there isn’t much use for that phrase in international cricket.

So, what did Shreyas do? He took his performance up a couple notches. 204 runs in three innings, unbeaten throughout, a strike-rate of 174.36 – he has simply forced a rethink for the Indian management. He also showed Kolkata Knight Riders’ management and fans, just what they can expect from him this coming IPL season.

Now, if there's a new T20 series next week, clearly Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid would have had to find a spot for Shreyas in the playing eleven, irrespective of Kohli’s availability. Even so, there is also another question to ask.

With such an attacking display, has Shreyas put pressure on Kohli who is struggling for form at the moment? For a while now, Indian T20 batting has struggled to get a move-on beyond the top-order, which made it requisite to find more firepower in the middle. Shreyas’ display shows that a number three can attack more, whilst finding a balance with building a T20 innings. In that, he has shown there are more ways to bat than just Kohli’s textbook method.

As aforementioned, a lot of people will be relieved there is only Test cricket left before the IPL begins.

It brings us to the other facet of India’s experimentation, and that’s with the ball. Sunday evening was a primer in this regard as India completely overhauled their bowling line-up with as many as four changes. And yet, the result was no different. It underlines certain consistency in the formula that Rohit-Rahul Dravid have evaluated and all that remains is to sew up a final bowling look for the T20 World Cup.

Let us start with the pace department. One of the key observations by commentator Russell Arnold was about the bounce and movement induced from the Dharamsala. “You will get this bounce in Australia, but you won’t get this movement,” he had remarked. As his words hold true, India needs to formulate its pace attack as per the hard surfaces Down Under.

If Venkatesh Iyer is your designated all-rounder, there are three other pacers that India would want to play. One of them will be Jasprit Bumrah, who brings in both pace and guile, and is a complete T20 bowler as such. The other two spots then are divided among bowlers with different traits. On the one hand, you have those who can move the ball specifically under lights but are down on pace. On the other, you have T20 cricket specialists, those who have made their bones in IPL cricket over the past couple seasons.

Deepak Chahar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are obviously in that first category. Avesh Khan and Harshal Patel come under the second category. Clearly, India needs to find a balance herein to pick from both categories. Over the past two series, Bhuvi has had a resurgence in bowling form and fitness. It seems like Rohit needs his services in Australia, and thereby Kumar is being afforded chances to bowl himself into India’s plans. What of Chahar then, who is in the same mould? And can performances at home against West Indies and Sri Lanka, plus a b-string New Zealand, really be the proper parameter?

Chahar offers something more. The differentiation in age is a factor and perhaps it allows for more fitness and pace. But the stark contrast is in batting. Having honed his skills at Chennai Super Kings, Chahar is more in tune with the T20 format than Kumar. Again though, the question is if their type of pace bowling is needed on Australia’s hard decks?

This is where both Khan and Patel make their respective cases. They have brought a new element to India’s T20 bowling. Patel has his slower variations, which can be tough to fend off on bigger grounds as the batsmen go for leather. Khan has better control and thus can bowl with both the new and old ball, which is a potential drawback for Patel. Two more names herein throw a potential curveball for Indian selectors – Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur.

Thakur’s wares with the bat provide an all-round balance to the side. But does his bowling style really suit Australian conditions anymore than that of Chahar and Kumar? Siraj is not your quintessential T20 bowler – his natural length is a tad shorter than you would expect. But it works well for Australian conditions, again, and he has more pace to boot, perhaps more than any other names aforementioned barring Bumrah. The fine balance between pace and movement is what will ultimately define India’s fast bowling plans Down Under.

What this home season has definitely underlined though is the propensity to identify at least two names for every spot, just as in the batting department. Can the same be said of spin bowling? During these last couple series, Yuzvendra Chahal has been on a comeback trail and has enjoyed bowling under Rohit’s captaincy. Perhaps he is finding the same guidance and support as he did with MS Dhoni. Then, there is the emergence of Ravi Bishnoi, whose googly as the stock bowling option could be a threatening weapon on Australia’s skidding surfaces.

Chahal and Bishnoi have a great differentiation in terms of pace of their bowling, and thus can complement each other well. Does India revert to two wrist-spinners’ formula then? The answer can be found in finger spin and how vital Ravindra Jadeja is to India’s plans Down Under. Off late, he has had a tendency to not finish off his quota of four overs, and that is partly to do with how batsman have evolved in T20 cricket, targeting primary bowlers in the opposition.

However, over the last couple seasons, this facet of Jadeja’s game has been balanced by an enhanced role at Chennai Super Kings. He is no longer your primary spinner, who also bats and contributes in the lower order. He is now a proper force in the middle, a batting all-rounder if you will, and even in the IPL, Dhoni has moved away from using Jadeja for all four overs. Along with Venky Iyer then, if Jadeja can combine for the duo to deliver four overs, it would solve a huge balancing equation for India in terms of all-rounders.

Of course, that would leave only one spot for the spinner, and a potential toss-up between Chahal and Bishnoi. The last question herein is regarding confirmed spots. While this experimentation has thrown up a plethora of names, and the upcoming IPL season could shine the spotlight on a few more, at present there is only one confirmed starter – Bumrah. India’s bowling plans for the T20 World Cup will ultimately evolve around him.

South Africa held a 211-run lead over New Zealand at stumps Sunday on the third day of the second test at Christchurch, a day on which there were four specific episodes and one general theme.

The binding theme of the day’s play was that South Africa held a tenuous upper hand. From the start of play when New Zealand was 157-5 and 207 runs behind South Africa’s first innings of 364, the Proteas kept a grip on the match, shaken momentarily by the day’s events.

Dean Elgar and Tom Latham, captain of South Africa and New Zealand respectively, pose with the winner's trophy. AFP

At stumps South Africa was 140-5 in its second innings with Kyle Verreyne 22 not out and Wiaan Mulder 10.

In the first episode of the day, 35-year-old allrounder Colin de Grandhomme continued a gallant counter-attacking innings to post his second test century, four years after his first.

De Grandhomme shared a 133-run sixth-wicket partnership with Daryl Mitchell which shored up the New Zealand innings after the home team had been 91-5 late on the second day. He made a half century from 56 balls before stumps on Saturday and carried on to 90 in the first session Sunday, then spent 47 nervous minutes in the 90s before completing his century.

“It went well for me today and the boys got a good score on the board,” de Grandhomme said. “Hopefully, we’ll be in a good position by lunchtime tomorrow.”

When Mitchell was out for 60, New Zealand was 224-6 and the sixth-wicket partnership had made South Africa’s lead less oppressive.

In the next episode, South Africa pushed back. They ended New Zealand’s innings at 293 to take a 71-run lead on the first innings.

De Grandhomme continued what became a slow accumulation of runs and finished 120 not out. A bright innings of 21 by Neil Wagner helped New Zealand take a little more weight out of the total. Wagner’s innings included three fours, a six and a lot of bouncers and banter because he had tested some of the South African bowlers with short pitched deliveries in their first innings.

Kagiso Rabada took the last two wickets with consecutive balls to end the innings with 5-60, his 11th five-wicket bag.

In another, short but significant episode, New Zealand made early inroads into South Africa’s second innings. Tim Southee took two wickets and Matt Henry one, leaving South Africa 38-3 and briefly raising the prospect the target New Zealand ultimately will have to chase will be less onerous.

Then, for most of the last session there was a dogged battle for supremacy. The New Zealand bowlers kept heavy pressure on South Africa and managed by the close of play to break through its top order.

First-innings century-maker Sarel Erwee (8), captain Dean Elgar (13) and Aiden Markram (14) fell before tea when South Africa was 42-3. A battling partnership of 65 for the fourth wicket between Rassie van der Dussen and Temba Bavuma allowed South Africa to rally to 104-3, steadying the innings.

Van der Dussen was dropped by de Grandhomme off Wagner and successfully overturned a caught behind decision as he grafted his way to 45 from 85 balls. He was tested by Wagner’s persistent short-pitched bowling and finally returned a catch to Wagner when he was 35.

Bavuma made 23 from 51 balls before flashing at a ball well wide of off stump and providing a catch to Southee off Wagner.

The day at Hagley Oval was never warm but a bitter cold had crept over the ground as the close of play approached. A few hardy spectators swathed in blankets stayed until the end.

They saw Verreyne reach 22 from 59 balls and Mulder make 10 from 42 deliveries to push South Africa’s lead past 200 runs. The questions of how many runs will be too many for New Zealand to chase in the fourth innings is still unclear.

New Zealand needs at least a draw to beat South Africa in a test series for the first time in 17 attempts over 90 years. There are two days remaining and the pitch at Hagley Oval is still relatively good: it hasn’t cracked and there are no notable footmarks.

There is still pace and bounce enough in the wicket to help the bowling side and New Zealand likely won’t want to chase more than 300.

That brings us to the end of our coverage of the second T20I between India and Sri Lanka, with the Men in Blue yet another series on home soil! Rohit Sharma and Co will hope to make it 12 wins in a row tomorrow in the third and final game of the series while Sri Lanka will look for a consolation win. For now, this is Amit Banerjee signing off, wishing you all a good night!

22:47 (IST)

Shreyas Iyer is the Player of the Match for his unbeaten 74

Shreyas: That's my go-to movement. I'm able to sight the ball pretty well after that. The bowler was smarter though, he bowled a yorker and it swung, and I was lucky to survive. When I saw the recap, I was shocked literally, and it's something I want to forget. It was really important for me to time the ball in that situation. We saw Ishan, he was charging on really well but unfortunately got out. I wasn't really thinking about that. Was just thinking about the present situation and being honest about ourselves. Be in the present and not think much about the opposition.

22:45 (IST)

Rohit Sharma, India captain: It was something pleasing for us to see. That has been happening consistently now for a period of time which is good to see, which is the middle order stepping up and finishing games. (On leaking too many runs in the death overs) Don’t want to be too harsh on the bowlers. These days can happen. We restricted them really well in the first 15 overs. Obviously something for us to understand how to bowl at the backend of the innings. Lot of these guys are talented. They just need an opportunity to go out and express themselves. (Shreyas and Jadeja) To finish the way they did in the end was really good. The kind of situation we are living in at the moment, we have to look after everyone, ensure everyone’s fresh physically and mentally. If we need to rotate and change, we'll do it.

22:40 (IST)

Dasun Shanaka, Sri Lanka captain: It started really well, but we should have done better in the powerplay. Another wicket in the powerplay would have been better for us. We had a plan before coming into the game. I think he (Kumara) could have bowled another over in the powerplay. The game was set for me in that period. The wicket was superb today, and I played to my strength. It’s another series loss, but there are a lot of positives.

22:27 (IST)

After 17.1 overs,India 186/3 ( Shreyas Iyer 74 , Ravindra Jadeja 45)

FOUR! Jadeja finishes off in style with a boundary down the ground as Team India clinch yet another series and register their 11th consecutive victory in T20Is! This is as comprehensive a win as it can get, with Iyer and Jadeja guiding them home with seven wickets and 17 balls to spare!

22:23 (IST)

After 17 overs,India 182/3 ( Shreyas Iyer 74 , Ravindra Jadeja 41)

Fernando keeps things tight early on in his final over, conceding three singles from the first four deliveries that also brings up the fifty stand for the fourth wicket, before Iyer plays a deft late cut to guide the ball past short third man for a boundary. India are left with just two to win at the end of this over.

22:19 (IST)

After 16 overs,India 175/3 ( Shreyas Iyer 69 , Ravindra Jadeja 39)

Some poor fielding by Asalanka near the long on region costs Sri Lanka crucial runs, as Jadeja follows up a brace in the first ball with a six. The all-rounder then collects a hat-trick of boundaries to snuff out any remaining hopes of salvaging the series for the visitors. 22 from the over. India need just 9 to win from 4 overs.

22:13 (IST)

After 15 overs,India 153/3 ( Shreyas Iyer 69 , Ravindra Jadeja 18)

Fernando also returns, replacing Kumara after the latter went for 23 in his previous over. Poor start for the seamer as he concedes a boundary to Jadeja along with a no ball. Jadeja then drills the ball down the ground in the free hit to make it back-to-back fours. Fernando attempts a short ball down leg, and ends up bowling a wide. Jadeja and Iyer then keep the scoreboard ticking with the ones and twos as 16 are added to the Indian total in this over. India need just 32 more to win from 30 balls with seven wickets in hand.

22:05 (IST)

After 14 overs,India 136/3 ( Shreyas Iyer 66 , Ravindra Jadeja 6)

Karunaratne returns. Jadeja, meanwhile, is off the mark with a boundary first ball with a drive past extra cover. Eight from the over. India need another 48 in the last six overs.

22:03 (IST)

After 13 overs,India 128/3 ( Shreyas Iyer 64 , )

FOUR! The ball races away to the long leg region after an inside edge off Samson’s bat, with Fernando fumbling while putting in a slide in front of the boundary rope. Samson then slaps a short-of-length ball down the ground for a flat six, his first shot of confidence this evening. An under pressure Kumara then concedes a wide off the third. Samson’s equally impressive in his inside out slog over cover in the next delivery, comfortably clearing the fence for his second six of the over. Samson swings his arms again in the penultimate delivery, once again clearing the straight boundary and this time looking even more at ease. OUT! Fernando grabs a one-handed stunner in the last ball after a thick bottom edge off Samson’s bat to bring the eventful third-wicket stand to an end. India need another 56 off 42 with seven wickets in hand.

22:00 (IST)

OUT! Binura Fernando grabs a one-handed stunner at short third man! Samson got a thick edge off the toe end off a full, wide delivery from Kumara, and Fernando had a fraction of a second to make the leap and prevent this from going for a boundary. End of a fine cameo from Samson and an game-changing partnership. IND 128/3

Samson c Fernando b Kumara 39(25)

21:53 (IST)

After 12 overs,India 105/2 ( Shreyas Iyer 64 , Sanju Samson 17)

Iyer brings up another milestone with a six, this time going for an uppercut off a short, wide delivery from opposition skipper Shanaka, the ball landing on the cushion at the backward point boundary with the fifty partnership coming up in the process. Iyer punches a full toss down the ground in the last ball, coming back for a second. 14 from the over. India need another 79 to win from 48 balls.

21:50 (IST)

SIX! Shreyas Iyer brings up another milestone with a six, this time the fifty partnership with Sanju Samson for the third wicket. IND 97/2

21:49 (IST)

After 11 overs,India 91/2 ( Shreyas Iyer 54 , Sanju Samson 16)

Karunaratne continues after the drinks break. 11 from his second over of the innings, including a maximum to Iyer in the fifth ball as he brings up a second consecutive half-century — and his fifth overall in T20Is — in style.

21:48 (IST)

SIX! Shreyas Iyer brings up his second consecutive half-century — and his fifth overall in T20Is — with a slap down the ground, collecting a maximum in the process. IND 90/2

21:41 (IST)

After 10 overs,India 80/2 ( Shreyas Iyer 45 , Sanju Samson 14)

DROPPED! Samson goes aerial in his pull behind square, with the fielder making a mess of a low chance near the boundary, allowing the batter to collect a four instead. Six collected off the remaining five balls, as India reach 80/2 at the halfway stage in the chase, needing another 104 to win from 60 balls with eight wickets in hand.

21:38 (IST)

After 9 overs,India 70/2 ( Shreyas Iyer 43 , Sanju Samson 6)

Shreyas Iyer smashes back-to-back sixes off Jayawickrama in the left-arm spinner’s second over, moving into the 40s while alleviating some of the pressure that was starting to build due to the lack of boundaries. 14 from the over.

21:34 (IST)

After 8 overs,India 56/2 ( Shreyas Iyer 30 , Sanju Samson 5)

Chamika Karunaratne is introduced from the other end, and does well to deny Iyer and Samson the boundaries. Run rate’s starting to creep up now, and the current pair will have to step up if they are to manage the pressure. Five from the over.

21:27 (IST)

After 7 overs,India 51/2 ( Shreyas Iyer 28 , Sanju Samson 2)

Spin introduced after the powerplay as Praveen Jayawickrama replaces Binura Fernando. Iyer and Samson deal in the ones and twos in this over, focusing on rotating the strike as India go past fifty in this over. Five off Jayawickrama’s first over.

21:23 (IST)

After 6 overs,India 46/2 ( Shreyas Iyer 24 , Sanju Samson 1)

Kishan departs for 16 at the start of the over as Kumara breaks what was turning out to be a promising stand between him and Iyer. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, waste a review two balls after an unsuccessful LBW appeal after new batter Samson gets a thick inside edge that is later confirmed on UltraEdge. Single off each of the last two balls. India are four short of the fifty-mark at the end of the powerplay.

21:18 (IST)

OUT! Tame end to the innings for Kishan as he chips the ball straight to Shanaka at mid on. Kishan might have lost his focus after the blow to his helmet in the previous over. End of what was turning out to be a promising stand. IND 44/2

Kishan c Shanaka b Kumara 16

21:17 (IST)

After 5 overs,India 44/1 ( Ishan Kishan (W) 16 , Shreyas Iyer 23)

Change of ends for Fernando. Single off each of the first two balls, before Iyer accelerates with a hat-trick of boundaries — pulling the first two through mid on and midwicket, before driving a full toss past mid off. 14 from the fifth over. Decent partnership so far between Kishan and Shreyas for the second wicket.

21:13 (IST)

After 4 overs,India 30/1 ( Ishan Kishan (W) 15 , Shreyas Iyer 10)

Lahiru Kumara replaces Binura Fernando in this over. OUCH! Kishan is struck on the helmet by a 146 mph bouncer in the second delivery, the bowler walking up to the keeper-batter to check if he’s fine, and the physio stepping out to the field to have a look. Iyer, meanwhile, steers a short, wide delivery past the man at slip in the fourth delivery to collect his second boundary. Seven from the over.

21:13 (IST)

After 3 overs,India 23/1 ( Ishan Kishan (W) 14 , Shreyas Iyer 5)

Iyer’s lucky to not have been bowled by Chameera in this over, as an outswinging yorker from the seamer n the third delivery narrowly misses the off pole. Iyer a couple of steps to his left trying to make room, and the ball was out of his reach as a result. Tidy over from Chameera with just five coming off it.

21:03 (IST)

After 2 overs,India 19/1 ( Ishan Kishan (W) 12 , Shreyas Iyer 4)

Binura Fernando, replacing Jeffrey Vandersay in today’s game, bowls the second over. Another nine runs added to the Indian total, with Kishan and new batter Shreyas Iyer collecting a boundary each.

21:01 (IST)

After 1 over,India 9/1 ( Ishan Kishan (W) 7 , )

Rohit gets off the mark right away with a single, while Kishan collects a brace off the second ball. Kishan then collects the first boundary of the innings by jamming his bat down to a wide yorker, steering the ball through backward point. Chameera angles the ball into the batter in the fourth, collecting a dot as Kishan gets an inside edge. Wide down the leg side off the fifth, followed by a single, before Rohit departs in the final delivery after chopping the ball onto his stumps. Nine runs and a wicket from the first over.

20:56 (IST)

OUT! Rohit Sharma chops the ball onto the stumps to depart for 1 as Chameera strikes early! Shaky start for the Indians after being set 184 to win. IND 9/1

Rohit b Chameera 1

20:51 (IST)

Rohit Sharma walks out to open alongside Ishan Kishan, with Dushmantha Chameera bowling the first over of the innings.

20:41 (IST)

After 20 overs,Sri Lanka 183/5 ( Dasun Shanaka (C) 47 , Chamika Karunaratne 0)

Chamika Karunaratne joins Shanaka at the crease, with Harshal Patel bowling the final over. Patel starts off with a wide, followed by four leg byes as the ball deflects towards third man off Shanaka’s shoe. The SL skipper dashes back for a second in the second delivery, before heaving an off-cutter over backward square leg to collect a boundary next ball. Patel successfully appeals for leg-before in the fourth, with Shanaka overturning the decision after the ball is showing to be missing leg. Shanaka then tonks Patel for back-to-back sixes to finish the innings on a high, remaining unbeaten on 47 as Sri Lanka set India 184 to win after being asked to bat.

20:33 (IST)

After 19 overs,Sri Lanka 160/5 ( Dasun Shanaka (C) 29 , Chamika Karunaratne 0)

SIX! Clobbered over long on by Shanaka, the third maximum of the innings for the Sri Lankan skipper! Collects a boundary next ball thanks to a thick top-edge, with an under-pressure Bhuvneshwar conceding a wide next ball. After conceding 16 in the first five deliveries, Bhuvi traps Nissanka leg-before to end his spell with a wicket — his first of the evening. One more over to go after this.

20:32 (IST)

OUT! Bhuvneshwar grabs his first wicket off his final delivery of the innings, trapping Nissanka leg-before with a yorker. Nissanka misses while attempting a reverse lap, and it's an easy enough decision for the umpire. SL 160/5

Nissanka LBW Bhuvneshwar 75(53)

20:31 (IST)

SIX! Shanaka clobbers the ball over long on off Bhuvneshwar to bring up the fifty stand with Nissanka for the fifth wicket. SL 152/4

20:25 (IST)

After 18 overs,Sri Lanka 144/4 ( Pathum Nissanka 73 , Dasun Shanaka (C) 16)

Nissanka starts off with back-to-back boundaries off Bumrah in the first two balls, targetting the fine leg/long leg region, and collects a third in the final delivery, this time off a reverse lap. 14 from Bumrah’s final over as he finishes with figures of 1/24.

20:20 (IST)

After 17 overs,Sri Lanka 130/4 ( Pathum Nissanka 60 , Dasun Shanaka (C) 15)

Skipper Shanaka decides to take the attack to the hosts, smashing two sixes and a four with 19 being added to the board in Patel’s third over of the evening.

20:18 (IST)

After 16 overs,Sri Lanka 111/4 ( Pathum Nissanka 54 , Dasun Shanaka (C) 3)

Nissanka brings up his fifth T20I half-century with a well-timed cut through the cover region in the fourth delivery as Chahal signs off with figures of 1/27 from four overs, conceding eight from his final over. Another four overs left in the innings.

20:14 (IST)

FOUR! Pathum Nissanka brings up his fifth T20I half-century with a boundary off Chahal! SL 110/4

20:13 (IST)

After 15 overs,Sri Lanka 103/4 ( Pathum Nissanka 48 , Dasun Shanaka (C) 1)

India vs Sri Lanka Live Score, 2nd T20I in Dharamsala: Fernando keeps things tight early on in his final over, conceding three singles from the first four deliveries that also brings up the fifty stand for the fourth wicket, before Iyer plays a deft late cut to guide the ball past short third man for a boundary. India are left with just two to win at the end of this over.

Preview: India will look to wrap the three-match T20I series on Saturday with a win over Sri Lanka in the second match at Dharamshala. The Rohit Sharma-led side won the first match by 62 runs.

India have been on a 10-match winning streak and a victory on Saturday will complete a second T20I series win for the side in as many weeks. It has been a terrific turnaround for Men in Blue who failed to dazzle at the 2021 T20 World Cup just a few months ago, making an early exit from the mega event.

Since then India's focus has been on plugging the glaring holes in the side and the recent results have been proof that the team is moving in the right direction. Suryakumar Yadav and Venkatesh Iyer excelled in their middle-order batter roles during the West Indies T20I series. Ravi Bishnoi made an impressive foray into international cricket besides players like Harshal Patel and Deepak Chahar impressing with their pace bowling.

The Sri Lanka series is also another opportunity for India to improve their squad before the 2022 T20 World Cup. In the first T20I, Ishan Kishan scored a quick-fire 89 off 56 after having a subdued performance against West Indies and that's great news for Team India. They will hope for another cracking performance from the opener.

Shreyas Iyer scored 57 not out from No 3 in first T20I and that innings has strengthened his case. All-rounder Deepak Hooda didn't get to bat in the first match and returned with figures of 0/24 from his three overs. He will look to better his performance in the second match as he aims to become an India regular. Sanju Samson didn't get a chance to bat in the first match and he will hope for some time in the middle with the bat as India look to finalise their core for the upcoming World Cup.

Sri Lanka on the other hand will have to play their best to stop India's winning steak. They have not been at their best in the absence of frontline spinners Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga.

On 26 February, 2016, Mumbai proved themselves once again by lifting the Ranji Trophy for the 41st time after defeating Saurashtra by comprehensive innings and 21 runs on day three of the five-day final held in Pune.

Mumbai bowlers bundled out Saurashtra for 115 and capped off a dramatic day three. Mumbai had then played 45 finals for the Ranji Trophy out of which they won the 41.

Mumbai won the toss and elected to field first. Even though Saurashtra’s Arpit Vasavada and Prerak Mankad hit 77 and 66 respectively, Mumbai bowlers managed to restrict the team to just 235 runs as Dhawal Kulkarni took five wickets and Shardul Thakur bagged three.

When it was Mumbai’s turn to bat, right-hander Shreyas Iyer made a splendid century (117) while Siddhesh Lad added 88 on the scoreboard, taking the team to a commanding 371.

Saurashtra suffered a top-order collapse in the second innings and lasted only 48.2 overs. Cheteshwar Pujara top-scored with a paltry 27 while Saurashtra’s other batters failed miserably at the crease. Mumbai’s right-arm fast bowler Shardul Thakur gave Saurashtra a hard time by taking five wickets in the second innings.

Thakur’s fourth wicket was Deepak Punia, who was bowled out after making three runs and Saurashtra were then reduced to 102/9. Thakur took his fifth wicket by dismissing Hardik Rathod as he slipped the yorker under the left-hander’s bat and clipped off the stump. Saurashtra were bowled out for 115 in 48.2 overs, facing their second defeat in as many finals, against the same opponent.

Mumbai’s Siddhesh Lad and Balwinder Sandhu’s partnership was worth 103 runs for the last wicket in the match's second innings and the duo made a record of the highest tenth-wicket stand for Mumbai in Ranji Trophy history.

Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer won the title of Player of the Match for his outstanding century and Mumbai earned prize money of Rs 2 crore for winning the Ranji Trophy. The Mumbai Cricket Association also awarded the winning team with a cash reward of Rs 2 crore on their marvellous victory with an innings and 21 runs.

Day 1 report: A bold call by South Africa to bat first in the second Test against New Zealand paid dividends Friday with the tourists 238 for three, including a maiden century to Sarel Erwee, at stumps on day one.

Erwee, in his second Test, headlined the scoreboard with 108, with 42 from Aiden Markram and 41 from Dean Elgar.

Dean Elgar and Tom Latham, captain of South Africa and New Zealand respectively, pose with the winner's trophy. AFP

Not out were Temba Bavuma on 22 and Rassie van der Dussen on 13.

"We're probably on top at the moment," said Erwee, who at 32 is a late arrival in the Test arena, and started cautiously before opening up as a fine strokemaker with 14 fours from the 221 deliveries he faced.

"To sit here today with a Test hundred behind my name is extremely special.

"It's a very special day I must say. Probably 24 months ago I probably didn't think I'd be in a position to even be close to a South African Test squad."

He shared in partnerships of 111 with Elgar and 88 with Markram but when Markram was dismissed Erwee followed three balls later.

The Proteas, trounced in the first Test and needing to win to save the series, surprised when they won the toss and elected to bat at Hagley Oval, where the customary green-tinged wicket favours seamers on the opening day.

Elgar, the first captain to win the toss and not bowl in the 11-Test history at the Oval, justified his decision by saying he wanted his batters to "front up" after they folded for innings of 95 and 111 in the first Test.

He managed scores of one and nought, and Erwee 10 and nought in that Test, and the pair responded positively in the second which began with Elgar sending the first ball of the day to the boundary.

"With our backs against the wall we had to show up," added Erwee who described the team performance as "uplifting".

The surface was not as green as in the first Test and new ball bowlers Tim Southee and Matt Henry could not get the same movement through the air and off the surface.

It saw Elgar and Elwee post South Africa's first century opening stand in 16 innings, and first away from home in a decade.

While conditions were favourable for batting, there was some assistance for the bowlers, with Southee getting one delivery to swing sharply into Elgar then nip away to take the off-stump.

Other chances created by the bowlers tended to find an edge and fall short of the slip cordon until a brief period after tea.

Markram looked set on 42 when he was lulled into a drive by Neil Wagner and nicked the off-cutter to Daryl Mitchell at first slip.

In the following over, Erwee's attempt to drive Henry was edged to wicketkeeper Tom Blundell.

New Zealand had 10 overs with the new ball with several unsuccessful appeals for lbw, and Rassie van der Dussen was dropped on seven.

Preview: Hosts New Zealand take on South Africa in the second Test, starting on Friday at Christchurch’s Hagley Oval.

Dean Elgar’s Proteas are trailing the series 0-1 after a defeat in the series-opener last week, and are on the verge of being the first South Africa team to lose a series to New Zealand, should they concede the second Test.

Dean Elgar and Tom Latham, captain of South Africa and New Zealand respectively, pose with the winner's trophy. AFP

The Proteas were outplayed in all departments in the first Test, a match which they lost by an innings and 276 run.

South Africa were put into bat after losing the toss, and things went downhill right away from the early stages of the game. As many as seven batters were dismissed for single figures while Zubayr Hamza was their leading run-scorer in the first innings with 25 runs.

Matt Henry (7/23) stole the show to get rid the Proteas for 95.

New Zealand responded strongly with knocks from Henry Nicholls (105) and Tom Blundell (96) taking the Kiwis to 482. Every South African bowler contributed with wickets, with Duanne Olivier scalping three of them.

By this stage, South Africa were 417 runs behind, and had a mammoth task in hand. Barring Temba Bavuma (41) and Kyle Verreynne, none of the Proteas’ batters were impressive as South Africa were bundled out for 111, with Tim Southee claiming his 14th five-wicket haul in Tests.

South Africa will need their batters to step up and produce substantial partnerships, if they are to avoid a series defeat.

Preview: India take on New Zealand in the fifth and final ODI at John Davies Oval, Queenstown.

It's been a horror tour of New Zealand so far for India. They lost the one-off T20I and then four ODIs so far. They haven't found any sort of momentum on the tour and suffered defeat after defeat. With the World Cup just days away, they would want to inject some sort of confidence with a win the final ODI.

In the last match, they were beaten comprehensively by the White Ferns. It was a rain-truncated 20 over match where India allowed New Zealand to post a massive 191/5. Apart from Rajeshwari Gayakwad, all the bowlers went for over 8 runs an over. Their bowling has been the biggest concern on this tour so far. And it's a worry going into the World Cup as well, captain Mithali Raj admitted. They seem to be taking too long to adapt to the New Zealand conditions. They have failed to defend 270-plus totals in two games.

The batters too need to step up. Harmanpreet Kaur desperately needs some runs under her belt. She was dropped in the last game and if she is brought back in the eleven there will be pressure on her to deliver. The poor form has continued for some time now.

Shafali Verma too hasn't done justice to her potential and has averaged just 21.75. The batters need to fire in unison. Spin has always been India's strength and they haven't come to the rescue this time. India would expect their spin attack to step up a gear.

New Zealand, on the other hand, have been clinical. Amelia Kerr will again be the biggest threat for the Indians. She has scored 287 runs from four innings at a staggering average of 143.50 with one century and two fifties. They would look to continue their winning streak and head into the World Cup high on confidence and momentum. The White Ferns start off as favourites.

India have turned a corner in T20Is. The 2021 T20 World Cup started off in a disastrous fashion as they lost to Pakistan and New Zealand in their first two matches. Those two losses delivered a killer blow to their chances of qualifying for the semi-finals. They bounced back hard in their next three games with thumping wins over Afghanistan, Scotland and Namibia but it was too little too late.

They however had found their mojo back as a few days later, they clean swept New Zealand in the T20 series at home 3-0. And then recently thumped West Indies 3-0 to climb to the summit of the ICC T20I rankings.

The change in approach has been refreshing. The West Indies series was a tough challenge but they aced it comfortably. It was a chance for the relative newcomers to learn and stake a claim for a spot in the 2022 T20 World Cup squad. And also an opportunity for India to plug the remaining holes and keep the backups ready. The likes of Venkatesh Iyer, Harshal Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Suryakumar Yadav shone through with some seniors rested and some first-team players absent due to injuries.

They are on the road again in this fast-paced cricketing world and will take on Sri Lanka in a three-match T20I series to further solidify their credentials for the mega event.

Despite the absence of a few senior players and injuries, the vast talent pool along with some good performances have led to selection headaches albeit good ones. And it's going to be the same in the Sri Lanka series. Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant and Shardul Thakur have been rested for the series. KL Rahul and Washington Sundar and Deepak Chahar will miss the series due to injuries. However, Jasprit Bumrah is back after a well-deserved rest along with Ravindra Jadeja who has recovered from his finger injury.

Here's a look at the selection conundrums India face ahead of the Sri Lanka series.

Who will be the openers?

KL Rahul is still out. Rohit Sharma opened in the first two T20Is against West Indies along with Ishan Kishan. He had a mixed series overall with scores of 40 and 19 opening the innings. In the third T20I, he dropped himself to No 4 to accommodate Ruturaj Gaikwad in the opening slot. It didn't work as Rohit scored just seven runs. And Gaikwad struggled in the only match he played in the series scoring 4 off 8 balls. The West Indies series was a chance for Kishan to make his case stronger but he didn't have that much of an impact, averaging 23.66 from three innings with a strike rate of 85.54.

File image of Ishan Kishan. AP

With one eye on plugging the holes and getting the backups ready, India can look at giving Gaikwad more chances which would mean that he could open with Rohit. Gaikwad has been warming the benches for some time and India could look to give him a slightly longer rope.

Kishan has had the experience of playing at No 3 for Mumbai Indians in the IPL and in the middle order as well. Head coach Rahul Dravid had spoken about the need for flexibility in the line-up after the West Indies series victory which would mean that India could utilise Kishan's versatility at No 3.

However, Kishan allows India to have a left-right combination at the top and that could keep him in that opening slot.

Another option is that Rohit might drop himself to No 4 in order to add some experience to the middle order and let the two young players open.

Who will bat at the crucial No 3 spot in place of Virat Kohli?

India can look to open with Gaikwad and Kishan and Rohit might opt to bat at No 3. He dropped himself to No 4 in the 3rd T20I against West Indies but the move didn't work. He may look to bat one slot higher and allow the two youngsters to open the innings. He's had a middling record batting at No 3 in the IPL averaging 26.8 from 43 innings in T20s.

However, with India looking to adopt a more fearless and aggressive approach, they could play Sanju Samson and get him at No 3. He's someone who plays fearless cricket and can provide that impetus up the order. Rohit and Kishan can open the batting to maintain the left-right combination and Sanju could bat at No 3. With Shreyas Iyer batting at No 4, Suryakumar at 5 and Venkatesh at 6. This would mean Gaikwad misses out on playing XI.

File image of Sanju Samson. AFP

Samson has had a good amount of success playing at No 3 in T20s, he's averaged 38.3 and boasts a strike rate of 138.6, scoring 15 fifties and three centuries.

Samson has endured a tough ride in the international arena so far. He hasn't made most of the chances presented to him but he is back again in the mix and would be looking to make the most of it.

Kishan too can play that No 3 role which he's done in the past for Mumbai Indians. In the 11 T20 matches, he's played at No 3, he's scored 216 runs at an average of 19.6. There is another option of Shreyas. The Mumbai cricketer batted No 3 in the 3rd T20I against West Indies and scored a brisk 16-ball 25. He's batted a decent amount at No 3 in the IPL.

In 41 innings, he's batted at 3, he averages a decent 31.5 with seven fifties and has a strike rate of 125.4. In that case, Rohit and Gaikwad can open the batting and Kishan can slot in at No 4 allowing India to have a left-hander in the middle order just like Rishabh Pant. Kishan has a decent average of 27.6 batting at 4 with a strike rate of 131.2 in the T20s. Or the other option is Rohit and Kishan can open and India can accommodate Deepak Hooda in the middle order at 4 or 5.

Where will Ravindra Jadeja slot in?

Jadeja is back after missing the T20I series against New Zealand and West Indies. However, with Yuzvendra Chahal starting to find his mojo back and newcomer Ravi Bishnoi impressing in the West Indies series, does he slot in straight away?

Firstly two of the three T20Is will be played at Dharamsala which will have something in it for the pacers. So, India might go in with three pacers and two spinners combination. The other T20I (the first one) is in Lucknow. If India play three spinners then all three can fit in with Kuldeep Yadav missing out. However, if they play three pacers then one of Jadeja, Bishnoi and Chahal will miss out.

File image of Ravindra Jadeja. AP

With Deepak Chahar missing the series, Jadeja will give a batting option at No 7, which means India will have to pick between Bishnoi and Chahal. Bishnoi had the best economy rate for India in his debut series as he gave away runs at just 6.33 an over. He picked up 3 wickets from three matches at 25.33 while Chahal had a middling series with two wickets from two matches at 32.50 and an economy rate of 8.12.

In case Jadeja misses out, India will have to look at the option of batting Harshal Patel at No 7. This move could slightly weaken the batting. But Patel is a handy lower-order batter and India can take that chance. However, Jadeja will in all probability slot into the eleven straightaway.

He is a gun fielder and India would be looking to give him some game time as well. One thing with Jadeja is, he sometimes doesn't bowl his full quota of four overs. In the last 10 T20Is, he's played, he has completed his full quota just five times including not getting to bowl at all in one of the matches. India can however manage it with Venkatesh's overs and the two can share four overs between them.

With Bumrah back, who will assist him in pace attack?

After a well-deserved rest, Bumrah will be back in the T20 team for the first time after the T20 World Cup. He will in all probability spearhead India's pace attack. There is competition for the other two slots if India go with three pacers. It will be hard to ignore Harshal Patel who's burst onto the international scene in some style, bagging a player of the match award on debut, against New Zealand last year. And then continuing the good work in the West Indies series, where he finished as second-highest wicket-taker and India's highest with five wickets from three matches at 21 and an economy rate of 8.75.

He's time and again shown the ability to soak in the pressure and his variations have been lethal in crunch situations. He might take the second pacer's slot. Then there are Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Siraj and Avesh Khan.

Harshal Patel took two wickets for 25 on his international debut as India defeated New Zealand in Ranchi T20I. AP Photo

India might look to the experience of Bhuvneshwar to start off and if they win the series, they could turn to Siraj or Avesh. Bhuvi once again showed the value of experience in the West Indies series. In the 2nd T20I with 29 needed from 2 overs and Rovman Powell and Nicholas Pooran going berserk, he bowled an exceptional penultimate over and gave away just four runs besides taking the wicket of the set Pooran (62 off 41). It was a crucial over that played a huge role in winning the match for India. Also in the two matches, Bhuvneshwar was disciplined and gave away runs at just 7.5 an over.

However, if India are looking to give game time and evaluate Siraj, they could start with him as he didn't get a single game in the West Indies T20I series. He brings the pace factor with him and could enjoy bowling on Dharamshala wicket which generally has pace and carry on it. Avesh didn't have the best of debuts as he went wicket-less, conceding 42 from four overs in the third T20I against West Indies. But it won't be a bad idea either to start off with him, give him that chance to build his confidence and test him in the first couple of matches.
