Karachi: Comparison with modern-day greats like Virat Kohli makes Babar Azam proud but young Pakistan skipper aspires to be on a pedestal from where comparison are drawn with him.

"I feel proud to be compared to these top batsmen and to be ranked in the top five of the world. But my dream is that one day I also reach a stage where other batsmen are compared to me and not me being compared to others," Babar said in an interview to a YouTube channel.

"I know that I also have to perform like them in every condition and compete with them. I also want to perform like them and win matches for the team like they do."

The 26-year old top batsman said the satisfaction one gets by scoring runs on tough overseas tours is immense and that's why he is all geared up to do well in New Zealand.

File image of Pakistan's Babar Azam. AP

"When you get runs in places like Australia, England, South Africa it gives you satisfaction and people sit up and take notice of you. New Zealand will be a tough series but I have psyched myself to continue my runs in the two tests and three T20 matches."

"In England we did well and gave them a tough time so I am optimistic we can do well. Conditions in New Zealand are different and we have to adjust to those conditions. Good we are going there early so that it gives us more time to get used to their conditions."

The Pakistan captain said he kept himself ready for all conditions but as a professional cricketer he knew anyone can make mistakes and the key is to learn from them.

"In cricket the learning process is never over. I like to study my batting whether I do well or fail. I spend hours watching videos of my batting and even others. It is a good learning exercise."

Babar, who was named Test captain just before the tour to New Zealand, said whenever he hears former greats talking good about him, it gives him a boost.

"It is always nice to hear the other greats talk highly about you but it also makes me realise that I have more of a responsibility to do well and prove them right."
Babar said he was mentally prepared for Test captaincy.

"The board had indicated to me they were considering me Test captain when they made me white ball captain last year. They have told me to play fearlessly and not worry about losing matches. They will support me. They have told me I am there as captain for a long time."

After suffering two consecutive defeats, India would look to salvage pride as they take on Australia in the third and final T2OI at the Manuka Oval in Canberra.

The visitors were outplayed in every department of the game in the first two ODIs. Much like the first ODI, Australia’s top three – David Warner (83 off 77), Aaron Finch (60 off 69) and Steve Smith (104 off 64 balls) – played brilliant knocks. Capitalising on the solid foundation, Marnus Labuschagne (70 off 61) and Glenn Maxwell (63 off 29) provided Australia the late flourish as the hosts posted a massive total of 389/4 on the board.

Barring, Virat Kohli (89) and KL Rahul (76), Indian batsmen failed to make any noteworthy contribution, even though they did chip in. Chasing such a mammoth total was always going to be an uphill task and the Indians suffered a 51-run defeat.

Smith had also slammed a quickfire century in the first ODI, and once again, he will be the one to watch out for.

David Warner’s groin injury has ruled him out of the third ODI and would come as a much-needed respite for the Virat Kohli-led side. Pat Cummins, meanwhile, will also miss all the remaining white-ball matches against India.

There has been a lot of debate regarding India’s sixth bowler. Hardik Pandya chipped in with the ball in the last ODI. It will be interesting to see if Kohli throws the ball to him in the final match of the series. But the Indian bowling unit, led by Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, needs to rediscover its mojo.

In the batting department, skipper Kohli has looked in good touch, but the batting needs to click in tandem if the visitors are to beat the fiery Australians.

Here's all you need to know about the live broadcast of the third and final T20I between India and Australia:

Pakistan pacer Mohammed Amir says players of the national team are scared of asking for a break even when they feel exhausted as they apprehend being dropped from the side altogether due to a "communication gap" with the team management.

Amir, who has retired from Test cricket to prolong his career in the shorter formats, said communication and understanding need to be better between players and the management.

"The problem is that if a player musters the courage to say in Pakistan cricket that he wants rest, he is dropped, so players are now scared about speaking about it with the management," he told the 'News One' channel.

"There is a mindset in Pakistan cricket where players are scared of being dropped from the team. I think this communication gap should be removed between players and the management.

"If a player wants to take a break he should be happy to speak about it with the management and they should understand his point of view and give him a rest instead of dropping him from the team," he said.

Dropped from the ongoing tour of New Zealand, Amir reiterated that his decision to retire from Test cricket last year was turned into an unnecessary controversy.

"Mickey Arthur was our head coach and anyone can ask him this. I was telling him since 2017 that if my workload is not managed I would have to leave Test cricket," he asserted.

"After I announced my decision no one spoke to me for six months about it and controversy was only created around my decision when we lost in Australia.

"...people lack common sense to understand the situation I was in after returning to cricket from the five-year ban," he added referring to the spot-fixing ban that he served.

Amir said people failed to understand his predicament when he returned to cricket after the ban without any training.

"Ask the team physio the problems I was facing with my eyes, knees and shoulders and I kept on telling them to manage my workload no one listened," he alleged.

"I remember playing in the first match of the World Cup with spasms and after taking pain killers.

"I only decided to retire from Test cricket when I realised my body could not take it and if I wanted to prolong my career I had to do something. So I decided to give up Test cricket to prolong my career."

Amir also lamented being constantly judged for the spot-fixing taint.

"Yes what happened in 2010 was wrong and I paid for it by being out of cricket for five years so much so I couldn't even play club matches. But people still tend to judge you by the past, not from the present.

"I think only God has the power to be judgemental and I just believe if your conscience is clear it is okay. But there is more negativity than positivity in Pakistan cricket," he said.

Sydney: Australia's limited-overs captain Aaron Finch played down pace spearhead Mitchell Starc's poor form Tuesday, attributing his struggles to the quality of India's batsmen.

The left-arm paceman has been Australia's most expensive bowler in the opening two one-dayers against Virat Kohli's men, conceding a combined 147 runs for just one wicket.

Finch conceded Starc "hasn't been at his very best" but predicted the 30-year-old would improve as India's tour continues.

"There's definitely no panic stations from my point of view... it's just a matter of time," he told reporters in a conference call.

"You have to understand his standards are a lot higher than what you expect from most other people because of how dominant he's been over the last eight or nine years, especially in the white ball formats."

Australia's Mitchell Starc in action against India. AFP

Finch said Starc's technique still looked good and he was working hard to improve his returns against India, who face Australia in the final one-day international in Canberra on Wednesday.

He said circumstances conspired to give Starc lacklustre figures in the opening two fixtures.

Australia posted huge totals on both occasions, forcing the touring batsmen to go after the bowlers on pitches that offered little to the pace attack.

"There's nowhere to hide in one-day cricket when you're playing on really flat wickets with quality opposition," Finch said.

"He'd love to be swinging the balls early on, but when you're defending big totals and playing against good players they're coming hard at you."

Finch was delighted at batsman Steve Smith's back-to-back centuries in the one-dayers and expected him to play a major role in the Test series against India.

"For someone like Smithy, once he's going he can be a hard man to stop regardless of conditions," he said.

"If he's confident in himself and is feeling good against a certain bowler, then that's definitely playing into his hands."

A groin injury has ruled David Warner out of at least the first Test against India and Australia coach Justin Langer says the temporarily vacant opening slot will go to the one who performs well for Australia A in the upcoming tour games against the visitors.

The Australian cricket fraternity has been debating about Warner's opening partner in the Test series with a few backing the struggling Joe Burns to keep his place while others want the young William Pucovski to open.

However, the injury to Warner has changed the scenario and has created a situation where both Burns and Pucovski could open.

David Warner suffered a groin injury in the second Australia-India ODI. AP

Langer said, it has taken "a bit of pressure off".

"No wonder I'm a bit more relaxed. We've won a few games and I don't have to worry about who we're going to pick for the Test side," Langer was quoted as saying by the Australian media after the team arrived here for the third ODI.

Australia A will lock horns with India A from 6 December and against senior Indian team on 11 December in Sydney before the Test series.

"I've said it so many times, the hardest part of the job is selecting the teams, but we've got an Australia A game starting in a few days and it'll be a good opportunity for those guys against the Indian A side to put their hand up.

"And then after that is another Australia A game versus the actual Indian Test side at the SCG under lights with a pink ball," Langer said.

"We'll work out who's going to play in that game and certainly there's huge opportunities for people to put their hand up."

The Test series is set to unfold in Adelaide with the Pink ball Test from 17 December.

If Pucovski is picked as Burns' opening partner, he would make his Test debut in a Day/Night game like Matthew Renshaw, Peter Handscomb and Nic Maddinson did in 2016 against South Africa.

Talking about the enormous pain that Warner suffered after getting injured during the second ODI in Sydney, Langer said it was like receiving a gun shot.

"He's strained his abductor in his groins and they tell me it's a very painful injury. It looked like he got shot by a gun. He was in incredible pain in the changerooms after," he said.

"I'm not holding my breath that he'll be ready for the first Test match, but with that said he's the sort of elite professional who will be doing literally everything possible to be ready for it.

"We'll see what happens, but he's going to be a loss that's for sure."

D'Arcy Short has replaced Warner in Australia's T20 squad.

Reports suggest that the kind of injury Warner has suffered, it would require about four weeks to heal and Warner may miss the first two Tests of the series.

Melbourne: The dispute between Cricket Australia and Channel 7 has intensified with the broadcaster saying CA is "terrified" of the BCCI while approaching a court and seeking access to communication between the two boards.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the channel "confirmed it had lodged an affidavit with the court here in a pre-discovery action, as the media company attempts to prove its contention that CA breached its contract with a raft of scheduling changes this summer" in order to cater to the BCCI's interests.

Seven West Media's chief executive James Warburton said that CA should have started the summer with the day-night Test against India, which is now scheduled to start in Adelaide on 17 December, instead of the limited overs series comprising three ODIs and as many T20 Internationals.

"It's a shame that the cricket administration have kept their head in the sand. They really don't value us as a broadcaster, preferring to outperform to the BCCI, who they are terrified of," Warburton was quoted as saying by the daily.

BCCI representational image. AFP

The channel's contention is that the top bosses in CA gave preference to the wishes of the BCCI, the sport's most powerful governing body, as well as its other domestic broadcasting partner Foxtel.

Foxtel, a pay channel, holds the exclusive rights for the limited overs matches between Australia and India, which kicked off the summer at the expense of the originally scheduled Test series, which the aggrieved broadcaster – free-to-air – shares with Foxtel.

Now they are seeking access into e-mails exchanged between CA, BCCI as well as executives at Foxtel and state governments regarding finalising of the fixtures for the marquee tour.

According to the Australian daily, if the furious broadcaster succeeds in "proving before court that CA breached its 450 million Australian dollar contract with Seven, of which Seven pays 70 million in cash per year, the network could be awarded tens of millions of dollars in damages or look to terminate its deal, which has three years to run."

One the tour's biggest draws, Indian captain Virat Kohli's decision to come back after the opening Test for the birth of his child has left Channel 7 at a major disadvantage.

In October, Seven West Media had sought official arbitration in its bid to secure a cut in its annual fees after being dissatisfied with the schedule for the India tour.

The network had sought an independent expert to determine the rights value of this summer's schedule, including the four-match Test series against India and the Big Bash League.

The network's claims included CA's decision to "change of dates for the matches, with only one Test before Christmas and the final Test finishing in mid January when many people are back at work."

Karachi: Pakistan Cricket Board CEO Wasim Khan feels next year's ICC World T20 could be shifted to the UAE as "some element of uncertainty" still remains over whether India would be in a position to host the event because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"There is still some uncertainty over the World T20 being held in India because of the COVID situation there. It could be in UAE," Khan said in an interview to the Cricket Baaz YouTube channel.

Reminded that India had planned to host a home series against England and also the IPL in the first quarter of 2021, Khan said a clear picture would come only by April.

The ICC has awarded the 2021 World T20 to India and Australia will now host the 2022 edition with the 50-over World Cup also scheduled to be held in India in 2023.

Representational image. Reuters

Khan also reiterated that the PCB was waiting for a written confirmation from the ICC and BCCI by January on issuance of visas to the Pakistan squad for the World T20 in India.

"Yes Mani Sahab (PCB chief Ehsan Mani) has written to them and requested them that given the state of relations between India and Pakistan, it would be best if the ICC and BCCI gives a written assurance about the visas being issued to us," Khan said.

He also disclosed that an online meeting of the Asian Cricket Council last week had tentatively set June as the time to host the postponed Asia Cup in Sri Lanka but the dates could be rescheduled if required.

"The next Asia Cup will be hosted in Sri Lanka in June and we have got hosting rights now for the 2022 Asia Cup," he said.

Khan said that although bilateral series with India is still a distant reality because of the border tensions between the two countries, it is ICC's responsibility to guarantee participation off all nations in any world event.

"But yes bilateral relations are not ideal and that is why we have also asked for the assurances for next year's World Cup," he said.

But the PCB CEO hoped that in future the situation could change as far as cricket relations are concerned between Indian and Pakistan.

Mount Maunganui (New Zealand): New Zealand on Monday claimed the T20 series against the West Indies 2-0 after the third and final match of the rubber was washed out here.

Persistent rain played spoilsport to left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner's debut as New Zealand's T20I captain and the final match of the series was called off after just 2.2 overs.

The Kiwis were without Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, and Kyle Jamieson, who had been given a break for the third game and were replaced by Daryl Mitchell, Scott Kuggeleijn, and Hamish Bennett.

Sent into bat, West Indies were off to a brisk start with openers Andre Fletcher and Brandon King scoring 12 runs off the first over.

After having smashed a six and a four during his brief stay, King (11 off 7), fell on the second ball of the next over, giving Lockie Ferguson his sixth wicket of the series.

But the skies opened up soon and the persistent drizzle got heavier, forcing the players to go off the field.

Heavy showers continued and after a delay of nearly two hours, the match was abandoned about 30 minutes from the cut-off time for a possible five-overs-per-side game.

New Zealand had earlier defeated West Indies by five wickets in the first T20 match before taking an unassailable lead in the series with a 72-run win in the next game.

Ferguson was named the Player of the Series for his six wickets at 7.17, including a five-wicket haul in the first match.

Both the teams will now head to Hamilton, where they will play the first Test of the two-match series, starting 3 December.

Mumbai: Indian cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar has financially assisted the treatment of 100 underprivileged children suffering from critical ailments across six states, the charity foundation with which the former captain is associated has said.

Tendulkar's partnership is with a foundation called Ekam, which focuses on children receiving treatment in government and trust hospitals. Tendulkar's assistance through the foundation has helped children in Maharashtra, West Bengal, Assam, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh.

Children from underprivileged families, suffering from critical ailments and those who cannot afford to follow up on their elective medical costs, got support from Tendulkar's foundation.

"The association with Mr Sachin Tendulkar through his foundation has been very fruitful and Sachin has done some very good work in the healthcare space. The association has worked towards providing quality healthcare for the underprivileged," Ameeta Chatterjee, Managing Partner, Ekam Foundation said.

Earlier this month, Tendulkar had supported Makunda Hospital in Assam's Karimganj district with pediatric equipment.

This is expected to benefit more than 2000 children every year.

Tendulkar had also participated in an initiative with UNICEF on World Children's Day, encouraging children to play a key part in shaping the future of the world.

Mount Maunganui: The third and final T20 international between New Zealand and the West Indies was rained off on Monday, giving the Black Caps a 2-0 series win.

Only 2.2 overs were bowled at Mount Maunganui before a downpour forced players from the field, with the West Indies on 25 for one after losing the toss and being asked to bat.

The umpires finally called off the fixture two hours later with no sign of a break in the weather.

New Zealand won the first T20I by five wickets and the second by 72 runs against a West Indies outfit that only emerged from COVID-19 quarantine on Thursday.

Paceman Lockie Ferguson was named Man of the Series after taking five for 21 in the opening fixture, plus one wicket apiece in the second and third matches.

The first of two Tests between the sides begins in Hamilton on Thursday.

2nd T20I report: Glenn Phillips smacked the fastest Twenty20 century by a New Zealander as the Black Caps set the West Indies an imposing 239-run target if they are to save the series in game two at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Sunday.

Phillips clubbed his century off 46 deliveries, the 10th fastest in the world and one ball faster than the previous New Zealand record held by Colin Munro.

When he was dismissed on the penultimate delivery of the New Zealand innings, Phillips had scored 108 off 51 balls, with eight sixes and 10 fours, and having featured in a 184-run stand with Devon Conway.

Conway was not out 65 at the close with New Zealand 238 for three.

The West Indies, who lost the first match by five wickets and need a win to keep the three-match series alive, opted to bowl first on winning the toss.

Skipper Kieron Pollard believed the overcast conditions would assist the side fielding first after rain had delayed the start by 15 minutes.

But New Zealand openers Tim Seifert (18) and Martin Guptill (34) were rarely tested as they raced to 49 in 34 deliveries before both fell in quick succession.

Conway and Phillips wasted no time re-establishing the innings, getting the Black Caps to 84 for two at the halfway mark before Phillips opened up with a six and two fours off Keemo Paul.

He continued to pound the boundary after a 20-minute rain break, and received a life on 88 when he belted a high full toss that was caught on the boundary, only to be recalled when replays showed it was a no ball above waist height.

New Delhi: Former opener Gautam Gambhir feels India skipper Virat Kohli committed a tactical blunder that no other captain would, by giving his premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah just a two-over opening spell in the series-conceding second ODI loss to Australia in Sydney.

Gambhir, who has been pretty critical of Kohli's tactical acumen as captain, felt that the difference between the two sides so far was how Australian captain Aaron Finch handled his most successful pacer Josh Hazlewood in the first two ODIs that the hosts won easily.

"I find it difficult to comprehend that if you have a bowler of Jasprit Bumrah's calibre and you give him only two overs upfront. It's not a tactical mistake but a tactical blunder," Gambhir said in 'ESPNCricinfo's 'Match Day Hindi'.

A five-over spell would have allowed Bumrah and Mohammed Shami to at least try and pick up two wickets upfront.

"...I was expecting Bumrah and Shami to bowl five-over spells each upfront and tried getting a couple of wickets each. So, I don't think there is any captain in world cricket who would give Jasprit Bumrah, two overs with the new ball," Gambhir said as it is.

With all top three Australian batsmen - Aaron Finch, David Warner and Steve Smith - striking form at the same time, Gambhir feels that if any bowler had a chance of getting the trio out, it had to be Bumrah.

"Now Finch, Warner and Smith, the top three are in prime form and who has the best chance of taking their wicket? It's Jasprit Bumrah

"....and you give him 2 overs and bring him after 10 overs, when the ball is a tad old and it gets warmer and you expect him to get wickets in these conditions. He is human too."

He then cited the example of how Finch used Hazlewood in the first two games.

"First game, Finch gave him six-over spell and second game a five-over first spell and six overs when Starc had a bad day. Hazlewood has been the standout bowler."

Gambhir was impressed with how Australia's sixth bowling option (the combination of Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell in first and Moises Henriques and Maxwell in second) controlled the proceedings.

"It happened in the first match as well. First match, Marcus Stoinis gave some 25 runs in 6 overs that he bowled and that was done by Henriques in the second game. So that's the difference you had.

"So, if your sixth bowler can give 6 to 7 overs, then you don't need to bowl with a front-liner who is having an off day like Mitchell Starc.

"Imagine had Hardik not bowled those overs, what kind of pressure it would have been on Shami and Navdeep Saini," he said.

While Virat Kohli, with close to 11,500 runs and 43 hundreds, has a staggering record, Gambhir feels that Smith for all practical reasons isn't too far behind even if the numbers suggest otherwise.

"I don't think there is a lot of difference between Kohli and Smith. If you go by numbers, Kohli always gave better numbers than Smith but if you look at his (Smith) record, in the previous five or seven ODIs, he has had three hundreds, so the difference is not much.

"He has scored 62 ball hundreds back to back. Obviously, you will call Kohli, the greatest ODI player as per numbers but not much difference between him (Smith) and Kohli."

New Delhi The International Cricket Council's newly-elected chairman Greg Barclay on Monday conceded that the ambitious World Test Championship hasn't quite achieved what it intended to and the disruption caused by COVID-19 has only highlighted its "shortcomings".

The World Test Championship schedule has been thrown haywire by the pandemic and the ICC has come up with a percentage allocation of points as all the scheduled series before the 2021 final at the Lord's cannot be completed in a short span of time.

Has the Test Championship given the format a fillip that it was meant to?

"In short, I don't think so. The COVID has probably highlighted its shortcomings of the championship," Barclay, who took charge earlier this month, said during a virtual media conference for wire services.

The New Zealander feels that a lot of problems with the current cricketing calendar is due to the World Test Championship which was fitted in to popularise the format, something that didn't happen, according to him.

"...the issues that we have already got, I wonder whether some of it was because of an attempt to develop a Test Championship, clearly designed to drive interest back into Test cricket, provide a bit of context and relevance around the Test matches," he said.

While it was good in theory but has probably flopped in practice.

ICC's newly-elected chairman Greg Barclay. Image Courtesy: ICC

"From an idealist's point of view, probably it had a lot of merit but practically, I do disagree, I am not sure whether it has achieved what it intended to do," he said.

In fact, Barclay dropped a hint that the inaugural WTC could well be the last one as smaller members can't afford Test cricket championship anymore.

"My personal view is let's get through with the little bit that we can in this COVID-19, with reallocation of points and all that.

"...but once we have done that, let's go back to the drawing board as I am not quite sure whether it (WTC) entirely fits the purpose and has achieved what it intended to after being conceptualised four to five years back.

"I think we need to look at it in context of calendar and not put cricketers in a situation where it's a lot more worse and not going to help us," the New Zealand lawyer asserted.

He revealed that he does have support among some full member nations on the matter.

"Yeah, I think there would be some countries. It is difficult for some of the full members as they simply can't afford to play Test cricket.

"Test cricket has got its legacy and I am a purist but I do accept that as much as I want to keep it as it is, less and less countries are able to afford that arrangement and are able to play it.

"Very few countries can make it work from a financial point of view," Barclay spoke about the crux of the matter.

Calling himself a realist, he agreed that the current calendar needs a revamp.

While he believes that T20 leagues are here to stay as they assist the financial health of the member boards, he wants bilateral series with context as players' safety as well as physical and mental health will be paramount in coming days.

"My view is that, I think all forms of cricket need to be taken into account. You are right, the calendar is increasingly becoming congested and something has to give in somewhere."

It is a sort of compromise that member nations need to strike.

"...but I do respect that each country has the right to develop its own domestic league given it meets the ICC requirements and is properly sanctioned," he said.

"Clearly there is a demand from the playing point of view and commercial partnering perspective. So let's accept that domestic leagues are here to stay and they have been tremendously contributing to the growth of the really exciting product like the IPL, BBL and CPL."

For him, bilateral events should have a context and profile.

"...it's an incredibly difficult juggling act to get in there and also, we need to have enough conversations regarding players' health safety. I don't think we have had enough conversations.

"Some of the focus needs to be on the integrity aspect of the game and we need to have competitions which are relevant and have context."

Barclay also made it clear that he would like the ICC to maintain its elite standard of competitions when asked about having extra events, which the world body had informally proposed only to be rejected by members.

"Bilateral cricket is fundamentally important to member countries. ICC runs very, very good events, all countries must have an opportunity to take part in these events.

"I am a fan of maintaining ICC events which are world class but at the same time, giving an opportunity to members to have bilateral cricket."

While making it clear that he would like to see a lot of Indo-Pak bilateral cricket, he maintained that it's "not his mandate" and he understands that there are "geo-political" considerations in play.

About India's "blow hot blow cold" relations with the ICC, Barclay said that everyone acknowledges the importance of a strong member board like the BCCI.

"India is a massively important part of world cricket. Like all families, we have general squabbles but India recognises that ICC needs Indian cricket. We have been able to navigate through differences if any."

Sydney: Top Australian batsman Steve Smith has revealed that he suffered a "bad dose of vertigo" ahead of the second ODI against India and was not sure of playing the game in which he struck a series-clinching hundred.

Smith's quickfire 62-ball-100 propelled Australia to a mammoth 389 for four in the second ODI, which they defended easily to secure a decisive 2-0 lead in the ODI series on Sunday.

However, the former skipper said he "didn't look great there for a while".

"I didn't know I was playing today. I had a really bad dose of vertigo this morning and I was struggling until... I came down early to have a hit and a bit of a run around," Smith told cricket.com.au after receiving his second successive Man of the Match award.

Smith said it was team doctor Leigh Golding, who relieved him of the symptoms by performing Epley maneuver which involves a series of head movements used to treat benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), a condition caused by a problem in the inner ear.

"The doctor, I think he performed six Epley manoeuvre on me this morning and got the crystals out of my ears and I was struggling for a bit," he said.

"Just pleased to be able to get out here and play another good innings and help the team."

Smith, who had scored 105 off 66 balls in the first ODI, shared a 138-run partnership with Marnus Labuschagne before Glenn Maxwell smashed an unbeaten 63 off 29 balls to take Australia to a formidable total.

Smith also took a superb catch to dismiss Shreyas Iyer off Moises Henriques' bowling on Sunday.

Prior to this series, India had conceded more than 370 only twice in ODIs. Only once before had the entire top-five of a team returned 50+ scores in the same ODI. Never before had India leaked over 100 for the first wicket in three successive ODIs. Never before had the entire top-three of a team returned 50+ scores in back-to-back ODIs.

And the last time India had lost five ODIs in a row in the same calendar year, Greg Chappell was the coach and Virat Kohli had barely turned 18.

The Indian ODI juggernaut — a win rate of 73% from the end of the 2017 Champions Trophy until the end of 2019 — has been crushingly halted in its tracks in 2020.

There’s a firm reasoning behind the chosen time-frame: it was in the aftermath of the bruising defeat to Pakistan in the Champions Trophy final of 2017 that India made a marked change in the direction their team was to take in the 50-over game.

Aaron Finch and Co won the second ODI by 51 runs and took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the ODI series. AFP

The batting, while featuring a few changes in personnel through the period since, has largely worn a similar look, and yielded similar returns, all along. The bowling, however, has been the marked differentiator in the India of 2017-2019 and the India we’ve seen this year, either side of a pandemic-enforced break.

Yes, India had a much-vaunted sixth bowler to go to through the best of the 30-month golden run; but ask yourself an elementary question – was Kedar Jadhav deciding ODIs in India’s favour, or was it the weight and the wiles of the five frontline bowlers?

In the aforementioned period (post-CT 2017 until the end of 2019), India’s bowling average was the third-best among the top-10 teams, the economy rate was second only to Afghanistan, and the strike rate was second only to New Zealand.

In 2020? India are, by far, the worst in all three parameters. And the numbers make for painful reading.

Worst averages in 2020: India 58.88, Zimbabwe 50.58, New Zealand 43.73.

Worst economy rates in 2020: India 6.47, Zimbabwe 6.17, New Zealand 5.72.

Worst strike rates in 2020: India 54.5, Zimbabwe 49.1, New Zealand 45.8.

Forget the ‘sixth bowler’ for a bit; India’s five frontline bowlers, put together, have taken just 32 wickets in 304 overs this year — they’ve leaked 6.26 runs per over, conceded 59.47 runs per wicket and needed 57 balls per wicket.

What’s gone wrong?

No Boom, all bust

To say Jasprit Bumrah has had his worst year in ODIs would be the equivalent of saying 2020 was a mildly troubling year for the world.

Bumrah, pre-2020: 103 wickets in 58 games; economy 4.49, average 21.88, strike rate 29.2.

Bumrah, in 2020: Three wickets in eight games; economy 5.76, average 146.33, strike rate 152.3.

Through the ‘golden run’, Bumrah had returned 77 wickets in 42 games (economy 4.32, average 20.35). India had won 33 of those 42 games.

This year? Well, you know it already.

Weird as it may sound, this isn’t really a problem area for India; you know that a bowler of Bumrah’s best-in-class brilliance, surely, is going to revert to type sooner than later.

As world-class as Bumrah may continue to remain, India can’t turn off so badly every time their numero uno misses the mark. AP

The real issue — and this runs deeper than just this year — is how miserably India’s stocks dwindle on their prime bowler’s off-days.

In a career spanning 66 matches, Bumrah has given away 60 or more runs only 10 times in ODIs. In these 10 games, the opposition team’s average score is 332. India have conceded above 350 in half these games, and kept the opponent under 300 only twice.

As world-class as Bumrah may continue to remain, India can’t turn off so badly every time their numero uno misses the mark.

Where’s the bite (read: the Bhuvi factor)

By now, you’re probably well aware of India’s powerplay misery (three powerplay wickets in eight matches this year, for the uninitiated).

It’s not a very recent phenomenon, either; since the start of 2019, India average more than 51 runs per every powerplay wicket — a figure better than only Scotland and Bangladesh.

One Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been missing through all of India’s 2020 ODI bowling travails. In 2019, he played 19 games and took 10 Powerplay wickets, while keeping the scoring down to 4.29 per over.

This year, Bumrah has managed to keep a check on the runs, going at 4.62 in the first 10 overs. But he’s not taken a single wicket.

Mohammed Shami is the only Indian pacer with a powerplay wicket in 2020, but he too has got just the two strikes — while leaking 6.29 per over.

The two other pacers trialled in the first 10 overs of the innings, Navdeep Saini and Shardul Thakur, have conceded 6.31 and 6.90 runs per over, respectively.

In all fairness, in the absence of any visible swing so far Down Under, it’s not like Kumar would have been likely to set things on fire either.

But would India have gone 0/281 in their last 50 overs of powerplay bowling across the Trans-Tasman? You’d think not.

The spin conundrum: Can’t not play Jadeja, can’t field KulCha

Bhuvi-Bumrah wasn’t the only bowling partnership sowing the seeds of India’s rampant run through that 2017-2019 period; there was one more pair, hunting, literally, as a pack, and forming the core of India’s most successful stretch of ODI performances.

Between them, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal picked up 178 wickets at a combined average below 26 during that run. In the 33 completed games where both featured in the XI, India lost only eight times.

Two pivotal events, however, forced India to change the course of their first-choice XI.

Even before the 2019 World Cup, Kuldeep’s wretched IPL campaign led to a dip in both stock and morale — and he hasn’t shown real signs of recovering ever since (ODI average of 53 this year, and one wicket in four innings in IPL 2020).

More vitally, after the World Cup, India lost the services of Hardik Pandya — a limbo that only forcibly went away at the SCG on Sunday, when the fears of total demolition compelled Virat Kohli to hand the ball to his recovering all-rounder, despite Kohli’s contrarian views less than 48 hours earlier.

Till the time Pandya the bowler makes a full-fledged return, India can’t field an XI without Ravindra Jadeja; till the time that holds, India can’t field an XI with both Kuldeep and Chahal.

Aside from being the only member of India’s present ODI setup who can bowl 10 overs regularly and contribute something of note with the bat, Jadeja offers containment in bowling that keeps his place safe — evidenced by an economy of 5.25 even during this annus horribilis of Indian bowling.

But what the wrist-spin twins offered at the peak of their partnership, the big differentiator for India, was a constant, genuine wicket-taking threat. It’s amply clear that Jadeja isn’t going to give you that — six wickets in 78 overs this year; a career strike rate of 65 away from home.

The solution?

That’s the clincher. As things stand in the Indian ODI world, it’s not really there to be found.

Hope.

For Bumrah to rediscover his mojo. For Kumar, and Pandya, to regain their fitness. For KulCha to be reunited, while rediscovering their combined mojo.

It might be a while.

Sydney: Star opening batsman David Warner faces a battle to be fit for the India Test series after Cricket Australia said Monday he will miss the last one-day international and the three-match Twenty20 series next month.

Warner limped out of Sunday's one-day international against India after straining his groin while fielding as Australia secured the series 2-0 in Sydney.

After a typically swashbuckling innings of 83 on Sunday, Warner fell awkwardly and had to be helped from the field.

Warner will miss Wednesday's final ODI and all three Twenty20 internationals beginning Friday in Canberra to undergo rehab in an effort to ready for the Test series which begins on 17 December in Adelaide.

Australia's David Warner is assisted by teammates after injuring himself during second ODI against India. AP

Opening batsman D'Arcy Short has been called up to the Twenty20 international squad as a replacement.

Cricket Australia also announced that leading pace bowler Pat Cummins will be rested for the remainder of the white-ball matches against India, putting pressure on an out-of-form Mitchell Starc.

"Pat and Davie are critical to our plans for the Test Series," head coach Justin Langer said.

"Davie will work through his injury rehab and in Pat's case it is important all of our players are managed well to keep them mentally and physically fit throughout what is a challenging summer.

"The priority for both is being fully prepared for one of the biggest and most important home Test Series we have played in recent years, especially with World Test Championship points up for grabs."

Left-hander Short plays cricket for Western Australia and was the Twenty20 Big Bash League's leading run-scorer in 2017-18 and 2018-19.

No replacement has been announced for Cummins, with Australia to rely on Josh Hazelwood, Starc and allrounder Marcus Stoinis to provide the main seam bowling options.

Starc has struggled for form in the first two ODIs, and was Australia's most expensive bowler in the 51-run victory against India on Sunday, taking no wickets for 82 runs off nine overs.

Australia will play four Tests against India, with the other matches in Melbourne beginning on Boxing Day, Sydney (January 7-11) and Brisbane (January 15-19).

Mount Maunganui: West Indies captain Kieron Pollard accused his side of not performing to international standards on Sunday after New Zealand comprehensively won the second Twenty20 international by 72 runs on the back of a record century by Glenn Phillips.

New Zealand wrapped up the series at Mount Maunganui with a game to spare, after winning the opening match on Friday by five wickets, as Phillips provided a batting masterclass.

Called up to the Twenty20 side while regular skipper Kane Williamson focuses on the upcoming Tests, Phillips plundered eight sixes and 10 fours on his way to 108 as New Zealand posted a mammoth 238 for three and then restricted the West Indies to 166 for nine.

"You never know when the next opportunity is going to come and I came into this going 'let's go in as hard as I possibly can. I know I can do it'," Phillips said.

The 23-year-old, who was born in South Africa but moved to New Zealand at the age of five, took just 46 deliveries to reach his century, the 10th fastest in Twenty20 internationals and one ball faster than the previous New Zealand record held by Colin Munro.

Phillips plays in the Caribbean in the New Zealand off-season and said familiarity with the West Indies attack was a big help.

"Definitely, that has a lot to do with how I performed out here. You go in with more confidence against guys that you've played well against before," said Phillips, who also took two catches and ran out opener Andre Fletcher in a brilliant all-round display.

'It's our mindset'

New Zealand stand-in skipper Tim Southee called Phillips's performance "incredible", adding that his two catches, one diving at full-stretch on the boundary, and the sharp run out showed "he's got that X-factor about him".

But while Phillips, along with Devon Conway who produced an unbeaten 85, put the game firmly in New Zealand's hands, opposing captain Pollard was left fuming.

After winning the toss and sending New Zealand into bat under overcast skies, Pollard believed the West Indies were in control when the Black Caps reached the halfway mark at 84 for two

"But between overs 10 to 15 we sort of lost it there," Pollard said.

"In terms of the energy and feel and erraticness in the field, that's not the standard that we want to set for ourselves, and not the standard anyone wants to see in international cricket.

"I think it's attitude and I think it's our mindset.

"If we had stayed in the contest a bit longer, try to limit the damage to 200, 190 or so, we'd have been for the challenge but we were behind the eight ball after that 10th over and it just went pear-shaped from there."

Phillips and Conway put on 184 for New Zealand's third wicket while the best West Indies partnership was 34 between Pollard (28) and Shimron Hetmyer (25)

Mount Maunganui: Glenn Phillips had already been acclaimed the toughest man in New Zealand cricket. On Sunday, he became the most valuable as he struck a 46-ball century to lead New Zealand to a 72-run win over the West Indies in the second T20I and a 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

In a partnership with South Africa-born Devon Conway, who finished unbeaten on 65 after a maiden T20I half-century, Phillips added 185 runs and lifted the Black Caps to 238-3, their third-highest T20I total.

The West Indies managed 166-9 in their 20 overs.

Glenn Phillips struck a 46-ball century to lead New Zealand to a 72-run win over the West Indies in the second T20I. AFP

Captain Kieron Pollard tried to blast the tourists to victory in the face of New Zealand’s massive total and following his 75 from 37 balls in the first match of the series. But he hit three sixes in a row off left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner before he holed out for 28 in the same over to New Zealand captain Tim Southee on the long-off boundary.

Phillips took two catches in the West Indies innings, including a brilliant effort to dismiss Kyle Mayers on debut. He ran around the boundary, dived and grabbed an outstanding catch which helped confound the tourists’ run chase.

Phillips dislocated his kneecap running between wickets in the first match of the series at Auckland on Sunday, a gruesome and painful injury. By the time New Zealand physiotherapist Tommy Simsek reached him in the middle he already had “popped” the kneecap back into place and hit the next ball for six, batting on to make 22.

His kneecap popped out again during his innings on Sunday but again he batted through the pain to become only the fourth New Zealander after Brendon McCullum, Martin Guptill and Colin Munro, who all did so more than once, to post a T20I century.

“It was absolutely brilliant,” Phillips said. “Dev (Conway) is an absolutely amazing guy to bat with. He keeps you calm under pressure. To be part of a partnership that big is just unbelievable.

“My knee went again. It’s okay as long as I keep it in straight lines and it didn’t go as badly as the first time.”

New Zealand were sent in after losing the toss and were solid throughout their inning on a slow pitch. Tim Seifert and Martin Guptill put on 49 for the first wicket and Guptill made 34 from 23 balls before Phillips and Conway came together.

They were separated with only one ball left in the innings when Phillips was out for 108. Phillips reached his half-century from only 22 balls, with the second of three consecutive sixes he struck off Fabian Allen's bowling.

Conway has been a major success, hitting 41 when he made his international debut in the first match of the series in Auckland. He was the leading run-scorer in all three formats in New Zealand domestic cricket last year and proved with his innings on Sunday that he will be a major player for New Zealand for years to come.

Conway played for Gauteng in South Africa before moving to New Zealand in 2017 for better opportunities. He sold his house and car and arrived in Wellington without contacts or friends, where his first thought was “what the heck have I done?”

He quickly established himself if the Wellington provincial team and was grabbed by the Black Caps when he qualified to play for New Zealand on residential grounds in August.

The third match of the series is at the same venue on Monday and the first of two tests between the teams begins on Thursday.

India missing 'skills and character' of MS Dhoni: Michael Holding

"(MS) Dhoni comes in to this Indian batting order halfway down and he usually takes control while chasing. India have chased so well in the past with MS Dhoni in the team," Holding said.

"This batting line-up that they have got is still very talented - we saw some talented players and fantastic strokeplay. Hardik played a beautiful knock but they still need a player like Dhoni. Not just his skills but his strength of character."

1st ODI takeaways

The Indian men’s team didn’t have a day to remember as they returned to international cricket after 269 days – the longest such gap for India since 1991 – as they were a distant second to Australia at Sydney, losing by 66 runs to go 1-0 down in the three-match ODI series.

Away from the many shades of the IPL, Australia’s stars rediscovered the gold standard in yellow, even as India found themselves in a retro-fit as they debuted their new retro kit.

From a fielding display from the dark days to India's toothless bowling and lack of back-ups, Yash Jha writes on the talking points from the first ODI. Click here to read it.

Indian bowlers in focus in 2nd ODI at Sydney

After losing the first ODI by 66 runs and conceding 374 runs, Indian bowling would be in focus as Virat Kohli and Co aim to script a comeback to keep the series alive. Hardik Pandya's inability to bowl due to the back issues has impacted the team's balance as none of the top six batsmen are contributing with the ball and that has left the captain Kohli with only five bowling options.

India doesn't have another all-rounder to call up to the side and that means the team would once against have only five bowlers on the ground.

With Australia’s top three — captain Aaron Finch, David Warner and Steve Smith — hitting the straps right away, Jasprit Bumrah and company will have no option but to pick up the pieces and give a better account of themselves on a strip that promises to be a belter.

Hello and welcome to our LIVE coverage of the second Australia vs India ODI. Virat Kohli and Co were handed a bitter 66-run defeat in the first game of the three-match series and need to win tonight to save the series. The second match would also be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground same as the first game.

India vs Australia 2020, Live Cricket Score of 2nd ODI Match: Virat Kohli and CO need to win tonight to keep the series alive after they lost the first match of the three-game series by 66 runs. The main focus in the game would be on India's bowlers who had a nightmarish outing in the first game, conceding 374 runs together.

Preview: Virat Kohli-led India’s return to international cricket in several months on Friday was a tough one as the Men in Blue collapsed to Australia by 66 runs in the first ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

After that defeat, the visitors will now look to bounce back strongly when the second ODI takes place on Sunday. Most of the Indian bowlers, barring Mohammed Shami (who took three wickets), had an off-day on Friday, as centuries from Aussie skipper Aaron Finch (114) and Steve Smith (105) propelled the hosts to 374-6 after electing to bat.

In reply, the likes of Virat Kohli (21), Mayank Agarwal (22) and KL Rahul (12) failed to fire, but Shikhar Dhawan (74) fought hard early on, after which Hardik Pandya entertained with a 76-ball 90, but all that went in vain.

Pandya, who last bowled in competitive cricket in September 2019 before undergoing a successful lower-back surgery in October that year, was not yet fully fit to bowl, and he said in the post-match press conference that he would ‘bowl when the time is right’. The 27-year-old has been working on remodelling his bowling action in the nets since after that surgery.

For the hosts, Adam Zampa (4/54) and Josh Hazlewood (3/55) were clinical in the bowling department.

New Delhi: West Indies fast bowling great Michael Holding feels that despite a star-studded batting line-up, the Indian team is missing the "skill and character" that the peerless Mahendra Singh Dhoni used to display during big run chases.

The Indian team looked completely out of sorts as a unit in the opening ODI against Australia.

After a listless bowling display that helped the home side reach 374 for 6, the Men in Blue crumbled under pressure, slumping to a 66-run defeat.

"It was always going to be difficult for India to chase that down. One thing India will struggle with is the loss of Mahendra Singh Dhoni," Holding said in a YouTube chat show 'Holding Nothing Back'.

The 66-year-old further said that India missed the composure and control of Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in August this year.

"Dhoni comes in to this Indian batting order halfway down and he usually takes control while chasing. India have chased so well in the past with MS Dhoni in the team.

"This batting line-up that they have got is still very talented - we saw some talented players and fantastic strokeplay. Hardik played a beautiful knock but they still need a player like Dhoni. Not just his skills but his strength of character," he added.

Holding said the Indian team felt more confident going about run chases with Dhoni in the side.

"They have never been afraid to win the toss and insert the opposition because they know what MS Dhoni is capable of and their batting is capable of."

Dhoni's calmness was a big factor in run-chases.

"We never see Dhoni panicking at any stage while India are chasing. He usually paces that chase so well because he knows his ability and he knows how to go about the chase."

The former pacer added that Dhoni not only assessed the situation well but also provided support and insights to the person batting alongside him.

"Whoever is batting with him, he is always talking with them and helping them. Fantastic batting line-up, but MS Dhoni was a special man in the run-chase," Holding said.

The former cricketer turned commentator also slammed India's sloppy display on the field.

"India didn't help themselves with their fielding. The SCG is a big ground but the boundary rope was still in from the extremes of the boundary."

Kohli and company dropped at least four catches, missed a run out opportunity apart from several sloppy fielding efforts.

"India slipped up on quite a few occasions, with balls going over the fielders' heads and not going for sixes. There's no way you should be that far within the boundary.

"In any ground, it's a basic principle that you should not be that far in that the ball can go over your head and land within the boundary. If it goes over your head, it should be six and that is just basic," he added.

Dhaka: A two-member Cricket West Indies (CWI) team arrived on Saturday to take stock of the COVID-19 management plans put in place by the Bangladesh Cricket Board ahead of their series in January.

CWI director Dr Akshai Mansingh and the board's security manager Paul Slowewill, who arrived in Dhaka to inspect the BCB's bio-security plans and health protocols, are also expected to travel to Chattogram. The duo will stay in the country till 3 December.

"They arrived to come and see our COVID-19 management plan and the security plan ahead of their scheduled tour in January," BCB cricket operations chairman Akram Khan told Cricbuzz.

The two officials are likely to undergo a COVID-19 test on Saturday and begin their inspection, subject to clearance.

During the tour, West Indies are scheduled to play a full series comprising three Tests, as many ODIs and two T20Is.

The development comes close on the heels of CWI president Ricky Skerritt's recent statement that West Indies are keen to tour Bangladesh as scheduled, in January next year.

West Indies are currently on a tour of New Zealand, where they are scheduled to play three T20Is and two Test matches.

Gautam Gambhir feels Virat Kohli's team will keep facing the problem of imbalance till it finds a suitable replacement for a half-fit Hardik Pandya as his nearest competitor Vijay Shankar is not of same level.

New Delhi: Former India opener Gautam Gambhir feels Virat Kohli's team will keep facing the problem of imbalance till it finds a suitable replacement for a half-fit Hardik Pandya as his nearest competitor Vijay Shankar is not of same level.

Pandya is playing currently as a specialist batsman and is not sure when he would be fully fit to bowl in ODI cricket. India lost to Australia by 66 runs in a high-scoring series opener in which the visitors missed a sixth bowling option.

Asked if there is a problem of balance, the hero of two World Cup triumphs couldn't agree more.

Hardik Pandya scored 90 off 76 batting at No 6 for India as he once showcased his talent with the bat. AP

"Big time and this has been happening what -- since the last World Cup. If Hardik is not fit (to bowl), where is your sixth bowling option," Gambhir was quoted as saying by ESPN Cricinfo.

"It's only Vijay Shankar that I can think of but does he have the same impact batting at No 5 or 6. Can he give you seven or 8 overs, I have my doubts," the straight-talking Gambhir said.

According to Gambhir, this is the kind of problem which can't be sorted even if a opener of Rohit Sharma's calibre comes back.

"You can talk (about) putting in Manish Pandey, even if and when Rohit Sharma comes back in the XI, the problem you are facing now you will be facing then. There is no one in the top six who can actually give you a coupe of overs," he said.

While Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell are already in the playing XI as pace and spin bowling all-rounders respectively, Australia have a number of back-up men with multiple skill-sets, including rookie Cameron Green, who is set to make his international debut.

"And if you see the Australian side, there is Moises Henrqiues, who can give you couple of overs, there is Sean Abbott who is bowling all-rounder. They have Daniel Sams who can both bowl and bat.

"From Indian point of view, if Hardik is unfit where is the replacement?"

The release further said, "In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time."

Hobart: One of T20 cricket's well-known journeymen, Sandeep Lamichhane has tested positive for COVID-19, the Nepalese leg-spinner said on Saturday, less than two weeks before the start of Big Bash League in which he'd signed to play for Hobart Hurricanes.

The 20-year-old cricketer, who also turns out for Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, confirmed the news on social media.

"Its my sincere duty to tell you all that I have been tested positive for COVID-19. I had some body aches since Wednesday. But my health is improving a little bit now. If all goes well, I will return to the field again. Keep me in your prayers," he tweeted.

Lamichhane has performed exceedingly well in the Australian T20 competition, forming a strong combination at the Melbourne Stars with Australian limited-overs spinner Adam Zampa.

However, despite a successful season with Melbourne Stars, Lamichhane preferred to sign for the Hurricanes for the upcoming season, strengthening the Tasmanian franchise squad in its hopes of securing a maiden BBL title.

Lamichhane, who has represented Nepal's national team in the game's shortest format, has also played in T20 competitions in Pakistan, West Indies and Canada.

He is the first player from Nepal to bag an IPL contract and has been with Delhi Capitals since 2018. Lamichhane, however, did not play a single game during the 13th season of IPL that concluded in the UAE earlier this month.

India’s battered bowling unit will have little time to regroup and limited resources at its disposal in a desperate bid to perform a redemption act and save the ODI series against a turbo-charged Australia in the second game on Sunday.

It wasn’t just about the margin of defeat — by 66 runs — but the manner in which the home team exposed India’s vacant cupboard of all-rounders that will give Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri numerous points to ponder.

Hardik Pandya’s 76-ball-90 was at best a good innings but just like the Champions Trophy final in 2017, the sparkling knock was never going to help India win the contest.

Adding insult to injury the was Pandya’s frank admission that he is not bowling anytime soon and even if he rolls his arm over, it is likely to be in 20-over World Cups.

So with no back-up all-rounders or a plan B in place, India will have to execute their plan A perfectly.

Virat Kohli's India have lost their last four ODI matches. AFP

That leaves Kohli with bowlers who can’t bat and a top-order where none can bowl. Kohli did bowl an over or two but that is history as far as the skipper is concerned.

With Australia’s top three — captain Aaron Finch, David Warner and Steve Smith — hitting the straps right away, Jasprit Bumrah and company will have no option but to pick up the pieces and give a better account of themselves on a strip that promises to be a belter.

It is highly unlikely that India’s combination will change unless both Yuzvendra Chahal and Navdeep Saini are declared unfit.

The duo collectively conceded 172 runs in 20 overs between them and the wiry wrist-spinner did leave the field after sustaining an on-field injury just after the completion of his spell.

Saini, on the other hand, has back spasms and Thangarasu Natarajan has been inducted in the 50-over squad as a cover.

In case they are ruled out, Shardul Thakur, with decent batting abilities could replace Saini and Kuldeep Yadav’s inclusion will be a forced change.

For Australia, it is possible that highly-rated all-rounder Cameron Green will be rewarded with an ODI cap as Marcus Stoinis picked up a side strain during the first game.

Both skipper Finch and Smith hinted that Green is in line for an ODI debut.

While a five-bowler theory is certainly hurting India, some of the shot selections at the top of the order left a lot to be desired.

Especially Shreyas Iyer, whose dismissal was an embarrassing sight as he fended awkwardly to a well-directed bouncer from Josh Hazlewood.

For Mayank Agarwal too, extra bounce became his undoing but he is too good a player to fail consistently.

Skipper Kohli, the man who is revered by the Australian team, media and public at large, would love to play a signature ODI knock, glimpses of which were on display during his 21 in the first ODI.

“From the batting point of view, we had a chat briefly after the game - all of us committed to playing positively and that’s why you saw everyone go out there and play with intent,” Kohli had said after the match.

The lack of a sixth bowling option will put tremendous pressure on Bumrah, whose erstwhile ODI form has deserted him since he came back from his stress injury.

While he was brilliant in the IPL, just like the New Zealand series in February, the Gujarat slinger looked pedestrian at best at the SCG.

An equaliser on Sunday will be easier said than done.

Squads:

India: Virat Kohli (captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Shubman Gill, KL Rahul (vice-captain & wicket-keeper), Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, Hardik Pandya, Mayank Agarwal, Ravindra Jadeja, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Shami, Navdeep Saini, Shardul Thakur, T Natarajan.

Australia: Aaron Finch (captain), David Warner, Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood, Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Cameron Green, Moises Henriques, Andrew Tye, Daniel Sams, Matthew Wade (wicketkeeper).

The match starts at 9:10 am.
