India stormed into the semi-finals of the ICC World Cup with a commanding 160-run victory over the Netherlands in Bengaluru on Sunday.

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

Not only are the Rohit Sharma-led side the only remaining side to have not lost a single match so far in the tournament, they’ve also set a new record for most wins in a single edition of a World Cup by registering their ninth win in a row.

Shreyas Iyer (128 not out) and KL Rahul (102) led the way with blazing centuries, the latter smashing the record for the fastest World Cup ton by an Indian as the hosts piled on 410/4 — the second-highest total of the ongoing tournament.

The Dutch ended up faring a lot better than India’s three previous opponents before Sunday’s game, making the most of the batting-friendly conditions on offer at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium along with a few fielding errors from the Indians that included a few missed chances.

Powered by Teja Nidamanuru’s rearguard innings of 54 off 39 deliveries that contained six sixes as well as Sybrand Engelbrecht’s patient 45, Netherlands went as far as 250 before losing their final wicket.

Among the moments that stood out during the Dutch chase was Virat Kohli and Rohit grabbing a wicket each as the Men in Blue made use of a number of part-time bowlers and ended up making use of nine different bowlers.

The victory was largely along expected lines for Team India given the vast gulf between them and the Dutch, the only non-Test-playing nation in this tournament. That didn’t stop fans from gushing over the Indian team’s milestone achievement of nine consecutive wins as well as their middle-order showing its might.

Here are select reactions to the India-Netherlands match on X (formerly Twitter):

Pune: Mitchell Marsh said he had hoped he had put a “smile on the faces” of his family with a stunning World Cup hundred that followed the death of his grandfather.

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

The all-rounder struck a blistering 177 not out, the third highest score by any Australian at a World Cup, during Saturday’s thrashing of Bangladesh in Pune.

That innings came after the 32-year-old had briefly left the semi-finalists’ squad to return home so he could be with his maternal grandfather Ross in the days before he died.

“I’m sure my nana (grandmother), mum and all the family will be watching at home, so hopefully it’s put a smile on their faces,” said Marsh. “My pop (grandfather) was a great man and a huge cricket supporter.

“Obviously, it’s been a challenging week for the family. It was nice to be able to perform for them and nice to get the win,” added Marsh, who shares the middle name of Ross with his brother Shaun, also an Australia international.

Watching back home in Perth, he was particularly taken by his team-mates wearing black armbands during Australia’s win over England in Ahmedabad to mark his grandfather’s passing.

“Sitting with my grandma watching the boys wear black armbands (was special), little things that probably a lot of people think that go unnoticed on TV,” he said.

Marsh was also grateful for the support shown by Australia coach Andrew ‘Ronnie’ McDonald and captain Pat Cummins in allowing him to leave the squad before returning to India.

“The fact that ‘Ronnie’ and Patty allowed me to go back without questioning anything, putting our family first, it meant a lot to me,” he said.

Marsh added: “I felt really cared for and to go back into the World Cup was a big call, but now that we’ve qualified, it’s all worth it.

“My nana was very vocal about me coming straight back and getting stuck in. My pop certainly would have been as well.”

Australia now face South Africa in a Kolkata semi-final on Thursday, with Marsh keen to turn the tables following the five-time champions’ 134-run pool play defeat by the Proteas.

“I can’t wait for the semi-final, it’s going to be a ripper,” he said. “We’re bloody pumped to get to Kolkata.”

South Africa had their confidence shattered with a 243-run thrashing against India after flying high for the most part in the ICC World Cup. On Friday, however, the Proteas ensured they enter the all-important semi-final against Australia having regained some of their lost confidence with a victory against Afghanistan in Ahmedabad, that too in a tricky chase.

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

It was only the second time South Africa ended on the winning side in four chases in this World Cup. They had fallen short by 38 runs against Netherlands in Dharamsala and nearly bottled a chase of 271 against Pakistan in Chennai. Then there was that game at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens where the Proteas were bowled out for 83 after being set an improbable 327 to win by 83, failing to surpass what Virat Kohli had scored with the bat on his 35th birthday.

And they certainly were challenged by an Afghan side that has been a revelation in this World Cup with victories over England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Afghanistan had nearly pulled off a dominant win against Australia, only to be undone by an extraordinary innings from Glenn Maxwell, and were looking to sign off on a high at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.

In their quest for a fifth victory in nine outings, the Afghan Atalan posted a fighting total in the range of 250, and their spinners did challenge the South African batters, to the point where they dominated certain phases of the second innings.

The Proteas, however, managed to overcome their chasing blues for once and stitched enough partnerships along the way to reach home with enough wickets and deliveries to spare.

Looking back at the events of the 42nd match of the World Cup, we bring to you five key moments that shaped the South Africa-Afghanistan encounter:

Maharaj strikes off his first ball of the day

Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran got the Afghans off to a promising start after skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi opted to bat, adding 41 runs in eight overs and collecting boundaries at fairly regular intervals.

South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma decided to introduce Keshav Maharaj into the attack in the eighth over, giving Kagiso Rabada a break after a four-over spell, and the left-arm spinner immediately delivered by getting rid of Gurbaz, the aggressor in the opening partnership who ended up nicking the ball to Heinrich Klaasen at slip.

Coetzee rips through the Afghan batting order

Maharaj’s dismissal of Gurbaz helped turn the tide after Afghanistan’s positive start, and soon enough, the South Africans were all over the Afghan batters like a rash. Gerald Coetzee would get Zadran, who struck Afghanistan’s first-ever World Cup hundred in their previous game against Australia, caught behind for 15 in the very next over. The right-arm pacer conceded 11 in his first over in the powerplay, but would respond with a wicket-maiden next up.

That, however, wasn’t all from the 23-year-old; Coetzee had bowled an excellent opening spell of 1/14 from four overs and would strike right away after being brought back in the 27th over, getting Ikram Akhilil caught-behind for 12. And in his third spell in the slog overs, he would dismiss Noor Ahmad and Mujeeb-ur-Rahman to finish the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4/44, going past teammate Marco Jansen to the third spot on the wicket-takers’ list.

Azmat misses out on a ton

Afghanistan might have been bundled out for a total in the range of 150 or so and the match would have ended a lot more quickly had it not been for Azmatullah Omarzai’s fighting unbeaten innings of 97. Azmat, who had dismissed David Warner and Josh Inglis in successive deliveries against Australia, fought on even as wickets tumbled at regular intervals from the other end.

Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai remained unbeaten on 97 off 107 deliveries against South Africa in their ICC World Cup match in Ahmedabad. AP

Azmat collected seven fours and three sixes during his 107-ball stay and stitched 44-run partnerships with Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad to ensure the Afghans finishing within touching distance of the 250-mark that would give their bowling unit enough cushion to propel them to victory.

Spinners keep Afghan hopes alive

Quinton de Kock and skipper Temba Bavuma managed to stitch a 64-run opening stand before the latter holed out to Gurbaz at deep square leg to mark the beginning of an Afghan fightback led by their spin department.

Veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi would strike shortly after, trapping de Kock LBW though he had to take it upstairs after the umpire initially shook his head. Star leg-spinner Rashid Khan the struck twice in a space of three overs, sending Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen back as the Proteas suddenly found themselves in a precarious position of 139/4. Nabi would strike for a second time later in the day, completing a catch off his own bowling to dismiss David Miller and break a 43-run fifth-wicket stand.

Van der Dussen, Phehlukwayo guide the Proteas home

South Africa had nearly thrown the game away from a position of strength in their chase against Pakistan at Chepauk last month. This time however, they would go over the line with five wickets and 15 deliveries to spare thanks to a calm and composed knock from Rassie van der Dussen under pressure.

Rassie van der Dussen and Andile Phehlukwayo stitched an unbroken 65-run stand for the sixth-wicket that ensured South Africa got home in their chase of 245 against Afghanistan with more than two overs to spare. AP

Van der Dussen, whose consistency with the bat in this World Cup has been overshadowed by de Kock’s brilliance, maintained a cool head and went about rebuilding the chase after the Proteas had lost their fourth wicket, getting his team back on its feet in Miller’s company before stitching 65-run fifth-wicket partnership that ultimately sealed the deal in favour of Bavuma and Co.

Van der Dussen remained unbeaten on 76 off 95 deliveries while Phehlukwayo showcased his value with the bat down the order with an unbeaten 39 that came off 37 balls. Phehlukwayo decided to finish thing off in style when 14 were needed off 18, smashing Naveen-ul-Haq for two sixes and a four in the 47th over.

Virat Kohli was among the members of the Indian team who arrived for an optional practice session in Bengaluru on Friday ahead of their final ICC World Cup match against the Netherlands.

World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table

The manner with which Kohli trained, however, indicated he had the potential semi-final clash against New Zealand in Mumbai on mind, facing a series of short deliveries as well as a bout of left-arm spin.

New Zealand are primed for a last four match against India at Mumbai on 15 November on the back of 10 points and a superior run-rate than their closest contender Pakistan.

The immediate goal in front of Kohli might be disposing of Netherlands, but with due respect the Dutch are not yet in the New Zealand class.

One of the challenges the Black Caps will pose to Kohli will be through Lockie Ferguson. The express pacer is yet to fire like he did in the 2019 World Cup, partially because of a right Achilles niggle.

But Ferguson showed signs of hitting the peak against Sri Lanka at the Chinnaswamy Stadium rattling the Lankan middle and late order with a barrage of short-pitched balls.

He even pinged Maheesh Theekshana on his hands, leaving the batsman writhing in pain for a few minutes.

Ferguson is quite certain to repeat the tactics against India too if the meeting materializes.

Kohli owns one of the better pulls in contemporary cricket and rarely get rattled by the body line but true to his character, the former Indian captain did not leave anything to chance.

Pacer Shardul Thakur and the side-arm specialists bowled an array of bouncers at Kohli and he had little difficulty in smoking several of them away, some shots travelling as far as the second tier.

The 35-year-old also attempted a couple of ramp shots, which might prove handy against a bowler like Ferguson who can hit north of 150 kmph.

The second testing point for Kohli might come in the form of Mitchell Santner’s left-arm spin. It is no secret that the Indian star does not boast of a fine record against that type, often getting in tangles.

In the past, left-armers like Keshav Maharaj, Shakib Al Hasan and Dunith Wellalage had success against Kohli.

Santner has been New Zealand’s best bowler on view here, consistently hitting the right length to keep the batters’ largely silent.

It has reflected in his numbers too in the event 16 wickets from nine matches with a fine economy of 4.6 to boot.

It is highly likely that Kohli will face Santner in the middle-overs against whom he averages just 9.33 across 17 matches while getting dismissed three times.

Even if one takes recent numbers, Kohli’s struggle against left-arm spinners is quite evident. Since January 2021, Kohli averages just over 13 against them and strike-rate dwindles to 66.

So, it was no real surprise to see Kohli perfecting his craft against left-arm spin while facing Ravindra Jadeja at nets, who also managed to elicit a couple of false shots from the Delhiite.

However, it was clear that Kohli has already measured in his mind the possible danger areas that he might have to traverse on the big day.

Ishan Kishan stays away

It was an optional session but all the Indian players except Ishan Kishan attended the nets.

In a novelty, pacer Jasprit Bumrah tried his hand in a bit of spin while head coach Rahul Dravid doubled up as a side-arm thrower.
