Gujarat Titans skipper Hardik Pandya on Tuesday admitted that his team needs to play better cricket following their five-run defeat to Delhi Capitals in a low-scoring IPL 2023 game in Ahmedabad.

Mohammed Shami took four wickets to restrict DC to 130/8, but even Hardik Pandya’s unbeaten 59 could not save GT in the end, as regular wickets hurt their progress. GT were eventually restricted to 125/6 from 20 overs.

“We would have taken 129 on any given day. Just lost a couple of wickets and in the end, Rahul got us back in the game. I tried my best in the end but it was not to be,” said Hardik after the match.

“I feel sorry for him (Shami), if you bowl like that, and restrict a team to 129 and still not win, the batters disappointed. I don’t think the wicket did a lot but full credit to him. It is still lots of games left, we will take all learning from this game and move on. All these things keep happening, that’s the beauty of IPL. We are still on top of the table but we still need to play good cricket,” added the GT skipper.

DC skipper David Warner credited his bowlers for his team’s victory.

“Khaleel did well after coming back from injury, and Ishant is forever getting younger. I was nervous when Tewatia was going off, he has a reputation for that kind of stuff. Anrich is our most consistent death bowler, but couldn’t get it right today. But Ishant was so clear with what he wanted to execute for us,” said Warner.

Mohammed Shami ended up on the losing side but was adjudged Player of the Match for his four-wicket spell. “I just try to stick to my plans. Stick to the areas, the line and length that we discussed. This wasn’t a score that was above par, there was not too much swing. I felt we should have chased this. The mistake was losing wickets at regular intervals, we needed partnerships and they came too late for us,” said Shami.

Before the ugly exchange, war of words and the need to pull Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli apart in Match 43 of the Indian Premier League was the role of Naveen-ul-Haq. He could well be central to the entire drama that happened at the Ekana stadium in Lucknow on Monday.

While the players were shaking hands after RCB’s 18 run win against LSG, there seemed to be words exchanged between Naveen-ul-Haq and Kohli. In heat of the moment, Naveen yanked his hand out of the customary sportsmanship between the two teams.

In the 17th over of the LSG chase, Kohli had a heated exchange with Naveen when the game was all but over. Amit Mishra and the umpire had to intervene then.

Naveen was later fined 50 percent of his match fees for breaching Article 2.2 of the IPL Code of Conduct that brings the game into disrepute with unruly behaviour.

Who is Naveen-ul-Haq?

Naveen-ul-Haq is a 23-year-old right arm medium pacer for LSG and plays for Afghanistan in international cricket. The youngster made his ODI debut against Bangladesh in 2016 when a 17-year-old and hasn’t played since 2021. In the shortest format, he played his first also against Bangladesh in 2019 with his latest outing coming against Pakistan in March.

Still early in his career, he’s taken 14 ODI wickets and 34 T20I wickets. In the ODIs he averages 25.42 at an economy rate of 5.78 with strike rate of 26.3. While that in the shortest format reads, 20.70, 8.10 and 15.3.

Naveen has registered best bowling figures of 4/42 against Ireland in the ODIs and 3/21 versus Australia and Ireland in T20I cricket.

Earlier this year, Naveen-ul-Haq and fellow Afghanistan bowler Rashid Khan had slammed Australia’s decision to pull out of an ODI series against them in UAE. In retaliation, Naveen had withdrawn from the Big Bash League.

The Kabul born player has a wealth of experience in the T20s having played multiple leagues where he’s represented the likes of Sydney Sixers, Quetta Gladiators, Sharjah Warriors, Guyana Amazon Warriors and Leicestershire. In all he’s played 136 T20 matches picking 167 wickets.

In the IPL this season, Naveen has played four matches — against Rajasthan Royals, Gujarat Titans, Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore — posting figures of 0/19, 1/19, 3/30 and 3/30 for a combined seven wickets. He currently averages 14.00 with an economy rate of 6.12 and strike rate of 13.71.

Lucknow Super Giants had acquired his services by spending ₹50 lakh during the IPL mini-auction last year.

For Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Monday, things were far from perfect against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

LSG had lost skipper KL Rahul due to an unprecedented injury as early as in the second over of the match, and their batters struggled to cope up without Rahul in their batting lineup despite being set a moderate target of 127.

Rahul’s injury came out of nowhere. LSG batters lacked confidence without their skipper, and were eventually skittled out for just 108 in 19.5 overs.

Where did LSG lose the game?

LSG’s batting. It would be hard to believe that this was almost the same batting lineup that posted a mammoth 257/5 against Punjab Kings only a few days back, but as they say, a lot can change in a few days.

This LSG batting lineup without Rahul looked depleted. Ayush Badoni, someone who had not opened before in the IPl, was called in as an Impact Player for KL Rahul, and he opened along with Kyle Mayers. But, Badoni (4) failed to make much of an impact, being caught by Virat Kohli at cover off Josh Hazlewood’s over.

Regular wickets kept haunting LSG and at the end of powerplay, at 34/4, they clearly were in a spot of bother. In a match where it should have been a straightforward chase, LSG batters lacked confidence. They never really got a stable partnership going, barring a couple of 20-plus stands.

And by nine overs, LSG were already half their side down with their score reading 53/5. Mohammed Siraj has proven to be a game-changer with the new ball, and yet again, he was at it on Monday, finishing with figures of 1/24 from three overs. Karn Sharma and Josh Hazlewood had taken two wickets apiece. RCB bowlers were clinical, delivering under pressure, and also with six of the seven bowlers who bowled taking at least a wicket.

From 53/5, LSG were bundled out for 108 in 19.5 overs. A major setback can have major effects on the team, and that was prevalent after Rahul got injured.

So much so long that Rahul had been batting as the designated opener for LSG, it was always going to be a huge task for Badoni, and that too, in such a short notice.

So how did Rahul get injured?

In the final ball of the second over, Faf du Plessis had punched through extra cover in a bid to find a boundary, but Rahul sprinted for the ball but eventually seemed to have tweaked his right thigh muscle. Rahul was soon given attention from the physio, and not much longer, he was taken off the field in a stretcher.

After the match, Krunal Pandya, who was the stand-in skipper, said that Rahul had pulled his hp-flexor, and that the medical team would assess the captain’s injury.

“It is such a sad thing he pulled his hip-flexor. I don’t know how bad it is, the medical team will assess it,” said Krunal.

One would hope Rahul’s injury is not that serious and LSG would certainly want him back up and running as soon as possible. Afteralll, this season has been one of the most unpredictable seasons as far as playoffs are concerned, with all teams still in with a mathematical chance.

Only time will tell how LSG deal with Rahul’s injury should he be out for a considerably long period, but it will be of paramount importance that they fire in unison,  especially with the final few league games coming thick and fast.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) got off to their worst possible start in what should have been a comfortable run chase against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Monday.

LSG were missing the injured KL Rahul at the top of the order, and the skipper’s absence from the batting lineup proved costly as LSG were restricted to 34/4 from six overs, in a powerplay dominated by RCB bowlers.

Earlier, RCB were restricted to 126/9 after Naveen-ul-Haq scalped three wickets.

LSG lost the wickets of Kyle Mayers, Krunal Pandya, Ayush Badoni and Deepak Hooda in the powerplay, with Mohammed Siraj, Glenn Maxwell, Josh Hazlewood and Wanindu Hasaranga getting a wicket each.

At the time of writing, LSG were restricted to 66/7 in the 12^th over, following the wicket of K Gowtham.

LSG are currently second in the points table, with 10 points, two behind league leaders Gujarat Titans (12 points).

RCB, meanwhile, are sixth with eight points from as many games.
