England’s Jos Buttler hit a scintillating half-century to help the Rajasthan Royals hammer Sunrisers Hyderabad by 72 runs in their opening match of the Indian Premier League on Sunday.

Buttler’s 22-ball 54 led the team’s batting onslaught as they posted 203-5, and then their bowlers restricted hosts Hyderabad to 131-8 in the first match of the day.

Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal returned figures of 4-17 after pace spearhead Trent Boult struck twice in his first over.

Read | Chahal’s 4/17, Buttler blitz and other top moments from SRH vs RR

Buttler and his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal — who also made 54 — had provided an explosive start to last year’s runners-up and the inaugural IPL champions.

Skipper Sanju Samson also joined in the charge with his powerful 55 before he departed in the 19th over and Shimron Hetmyer finished off the innings with his unbeaten 22.

Buttler was the leading batsman in the last IPL season with 863 runs including four centuries, and he then led England to a T20 World Cup triumph in 2022.

He reached his fifty in 20 balls before being bowled by Afghanistan left-arm pace bowler Fazalhaq Farooqui inside the sixth over. Samson soon took charge then with Jaiswal for company as they piled on the runs.

Hyderabad were never in the chase after Boult bowled Abhishek Sharma for a duck and then Jason Holder clung on to a superb catch at slip to send back Rahul Tripathi.

Wickets kept tumbling, including Harry Brook (13) and Glenn Phillips (8). Getting in big-hitter Abdul Samad as an “impact player” only reduced the margin of loss as he hit an unbeaten 32.

The match also created quite the buzz on social media, especially on Twitter. We take a look at select reactions below:

Mohali: Kolkata Knight Riders’ chase against Punjab Kings in their IPL match on Saturday was delayed by almost half an hour due to a floodlight malfunction.

The PCA-IS Bindra Stadium here has a total of six floodlights at a comparatively lower height.

Floodlight malfunction is common at Indian stadiums and on the day, once KKR came out to bat, a lot of bulbs in multiple towers didn’t turn on and it became a frustrating wait for the players, who then went inside the dressing room.

The onus on stadium maintenance lies with Punjab Cricket Association and the inordinate delay was certainly an embarrassment for the local unit.

As of now, the cause of the malfunction hasn’t been known but it is given that PCA brass will get a rap on the knuckles from the BCCI bigwigs.

Rain interrupted KKR’s chase, when their score was 146/7, and PBKS eventually won the match by seven runs on DLS method.

Earlier, knocks from Bhanuka Rajapaksha (50) and skipper Shikhar Dhawan (40) had taken PBKS to 191/5 from 20 overs.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) began IPL 2023 in emphatic fashion, thumping Delhi Capitals (DC) by 50 runs at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Saturday.

Lucknow Super Giants were playing their first-ever match in Lucknow, and KL Rahul and Co sure did impress the home crowd.

LSG were put into bat by DC, and Kyle Mayers made use of the opportunity as he slammed 73 off 38, reaching his half-century in just 28 deliveries.

In DC’s reply, none of the batters barring skipper David Warner (56) and Rilee Rossouw (30) got going as they faltered to 143/9 from 20 overs, courtesy a fine bowling spell from Mark Wood (5/14).

DC, who are currently missing the injured Rishabh Pant, will now head back to the drawing board to rectify their mistakes aHhead of their next game against defending champions GT on 4 April.

Let’s now take a look a five top moments from the game:

Mark Wood returns in style!

England pacer Mark Wood had missed IPL 2022 with Lucknow Super Giants due to an elbow injury, but this time around, it just took Wood one game to put up a performance to remember, well, for LSG fans at least.

On Saturday against DC, Wood finished with match-winning figures of 5/14 in his quota of four overs.

Wood struck twice in the fifth over of DC’s chase, cleaning up Prithvi Shaw and Mitchell Marsh off two consecutive deliveries, and returned to inflict damage on DC again, removing Sarfaraz Khan.

Ahead of the season, one of LSG’s concerns were death bowling, but Wood returned to bowl the final over of the chase. The match was decided by then, but Wood was in no mood to give up, seeing off Axar Patel and Chetan Sakariya in the same over. While Axar was caught at deep square leg, Sakariya miscued his pull towards Krunal Pandya at midwicket.

If Saturday’s performance was to go by, there’s still a lot to come from Wood this season.

Kyle Mayers announces his arrival

He is 30 years old already, but it was only on Saturday when West Indian Kyle Mayers made his IPL debut, be it for any team.

Mayers was acquired by LSG for his base price of Rs 50 lakh at the IPL auction last December, and he lived up to his price tag with a fine half century.

He opened with LSG skipper KL Rahul, and while Rahul was dismissed early on in the innings, that did not dampen Mayers’ momentum as he went onto notch up his maiden IPL fifty in just 28 balls.

He was looking promising even after the fifty, hitting sixes at regular intervals, but was eventually cleaned up by Axar Patel in the 12th over.

Mayers was also involved in a 79-run stand for the second wicket with Deepak Hooda.

Another forgettable outing for KL Rahul

KL Rahul has been going through tough times with the Indian cricket team very recently. He had a miserable Test series against Australia, but had found momentum with an unbeaten 75 against the same opponents in an ODI, before being dismissed for 9 and 32 in the second and third ODIs.

It’s still very early days in the IPL, but going ahead to the next six-seven weeks, Rahul’s performance is going to be one of the major talking points of the season.

On Saturday, all Rahul could manage were eight runs. After collecting a couple of runs in the first two overs, Rahul cleared long-on boundary for a six in the fourth over, but just a couple of balls later, Rahul was caught by Axar in the deep off Sakariya’s bowling.

Rahul has previously scored runs in excess of 500 in most of the previous seasons, and who knows, maybe it was just a minor blip for him on Saturday.

Nicholas Pooran’s blazing knock

Nicholas Pooran was coming into the IPL with a price tag of Rs 10.75 after being bought by LSG in December, and on Saturday, he showed glimpses of what he could offer, amassing 36 off just 21 deliveries.

It was a short but sweet stay from Pooran at the crease, as he amassed two fours and three sixes to play a huge part in taking LSG to 193.

Pooran was involved in a 48-run stand with Krunal Pandya for the fifth wicket, before being dismissed by Khaleel Ahmed in the 19th over.

Warner-Rossouw stand revives DC

When Rilee Rossouw came into bat, DC were in a spot of bother at 48/3 in the seventh over, but Rossouw, along with DC skipper David Warner, gave the Capitals a glimmer of hope with a 38-run stand for the fourth wicket.

DC had lost Prithvi Shaw, Mitchell Marsh and Sarfaraz Khan inside the first seven overs, and in came Rossouw in at number five.

He even punished Ravi Bishnoi for 17 runs in the 10th over, hitting him for two fours and a six, but fell to the same bowler at the end of the 12th over, after the ball deflected on the bat en route to the hands of Kyle Mayers.

The dismissal was given Not Out by the on-field umpire, seemingly for an LBW, but LSG anyway opted for the review.

As it turned out, the footage showed the ball hitting the back of Rossouw’s bat, en route to Mayers running over from short fine leg.

Rossouw, though, had walked off even before the official decision was to be made.

Punjab Kings began the 16th season of the Indian Premier League on a promising note, defeating Kolkata Knight Riders in a rain-affected clash at the IS Bindra PCA Stadium in Mohali on Saturday.

PBKS, who are looking shake off their tag of “perennial achievers” by making their first playoffs in nearly a decade this season, gave a good account of themselves against KKR upon their return to their home venue, where they are playing after a gap of four years.

In Photos | PBKS defeat KKR in rain-marred clash in Mohali

Punjab manage to check off a number of boxes with their seven-run victory (DLS Method) in which they were the superior side not only with bat and ball but also on the field.

Shikhar Dhawan also gave a good account of himself as skipper, pulling off a victory in his first game as PBKS captain.

Read | Twitter hails PBKS’ ‘fantastic win’ over KKR

With the second game of IPL 2023 coming to an end, we take a look at some of the top moments from the match:

Arshdeep’s haul of 3/19:

Arshdeep was the standout performer of the game, proving his powerplay credentials once again by dismissing opener Mandeep Singh and No 3 batter Anukul Roy in his first over of the evening. He would remove top-scorer Venkatesh Iyer later in the innings to inflict another big blow to KKR’s hopes of pulling off an unlikely win, and was fittingly named the Player of the Match for his haul of 3/19 in three overs.

Arshdeep Singh was the pick of the Punjab Kings bowlers with figures of 3/19 from three overs. Sportzpics

The left-arm seamer proved Punjab’s attack was just as lethal even in the absence of their spearhead Kagiso Rabada, who isn’t due to join the squad till Monday, and that he can win matches on his own for the Kings.

Bhanuka slams maiden fifty:

While Arshdeep was the pick of the bowlers in the PBKS-KKR match, Bhanuka Rajapaksa was the only batter from either team to cross the 50-mark as the Sri Lankan left-handed batter would bring up the milestone for the first time in the Indian Premier League.

Rajapaksa, who was among the players retained by Punjab ahead of the 16th season, brought up the milestone in 30 balls. He struck at over 150 while stitching a solid 86-run stand for the second wicket with skipper Dhawan to lay the foundation for a sizeable total, though he would’ve been disappointed at not converting the fantastic start into an even bigger score, possibly in three digits.

Million-dollar man Curran dishes out all-round show:

Sam Curran would’ve been under a lot of pressure heading into Punjab Kings’ opening game of the season against Kolkata Knight Riders. Curran, after all, became the most expensive player in the history of the Indian Premier League after being bought back by PBKS for a whopping Rs 18.5 crore in the player auction.

PBKS all-rounder Sam Curran plays a shot during his unbeaten knock of 26 off 17 balls against KKR. Sportzpics

Curran did prove his money’s worth to a fair extent, though, smashing an unbeaten 26 off 17 deliveries, helping Punjab exert scoreboard pressure on Kolkata by getting within touching distance of the 200-mark, before halting KKR’s charge in the middle overs by prising out the key wicket of Andre Russell.

Venkatesh Iyer impresses as Impact Player:

We’re still getting used to the concept of an ‘Impact Player’ that has made its debut in the Indian Premier League, with the new rule cricket’s attempt at emulating the kind of substitutions that take place in sports such as football.

While some Impact Players backfire, as was the case with Tushar Deshpande for CSK yesterday or Rishi Dhawan for PBKS today, KKR’s decision to bring in Venkatesh Iyer for Varun Chakravarthy duting the innings break reaped rich dividends as Iyer ended up scoring a valuable 28-ball 34 and kept the Knight Riders alive in a challenging 192-run chase, especially after the Nitish Rana-led side were playing catch-up after losing three wickets upfront.

Dre Russ gives a hint of what’s to come:

Though he wasn’t utilised as a medium pacer, which might raise some questions over his fitness, Andre Russell sent out a warning to opposition bowling unit with some lofty hitting against the Punjab Kings on Saturday. The Jamaican all-rounder started off with the ones and twos, he broke the shackles with a boundary straight over Harpreet Brar’s head.

Andre Russell and Venkatesh Iyer briefly reignited KKR’s hopes with a 50-run sixth-wicket stand against PBKS. Sportzpics

Russell would later collect a six and a four off consecutive deliveries from Curran, keeping the Knight Riders alive in the contest. Even though the required rate was climbing, no equation would’ve been too high for a Dre Russ on song. Unfortunately for KKR, Curran had the last laugh as he dismissed him right after the six and a four, and helped Punjab surge ahead just before the rain got heavier.
