Dubai: The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday banned two UAE players, Amir Hayat and Ashfaq Ahmed for eight years after they were found guilty of trying to fix T20 World Cup qualifying round matches in their country, colluding with an Indian bookie.

While the ICC's Anti-Corruption Tribunal had charged both the Pakistan-born cricketers back on 13 September, 2020, the backdated quantum of sentence was passed on the day.

"The bans are backdated to 13 September 2020, when they were provisionally suspended for corrupt conduct in relation to the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019 in the UAE," the ICC release stated.

Both cricketers had taken 15,000 AED (United Arab Emirates Dirham totalling $4,083 approximately) from an Indian bookie, identified as Mr 'Y' in the ICC charge-sheet for fixing the qualifying round games. Hayat is a medium pacer while Ahmed is a batsman.

As per ICC's anti-corruption code, the duo has been charged on five counts which includes failure to disclose a corrupt approach, trying to improperly influence the outcome of a match, and accepting gifts worth more than $750.

"In October 2019, the ICC ACU commenced an investigation into allegations that members of the UAE senior international team may have had dealings with a known corruption network controlled by an Indian man named [Mr Y]," the detailed ICC judgement stated

"Steven Richardson, the ICC ACU's Coordinator Investigations, testified that the ACU had known of [Mr Y] for some time because he had been reported as having approached a number of players (either directly or via a third party) to get them involved in corruption in cricket.

"The ACU was also aware that [Mr Y] had been involved in unsanctioned cricket tournaments which had corruption and betting links," it further stated.

The judgement also mentioned that both Hayat and Ahmed had attended four and three anti-corruption education sessions respectively, organised by the ICC.

It also mentioned that there were WhatsApp messages that were shared between the two players and the Indian corruptor but the meeting that was scheduled on a specific date didn't take place.

"The UAE were due to participate in the ICC World T20 Qualifiers in the UAE in October 2019 and it is alleged that the players understood that this payment of the AED 15,000 anticipated their engagement in corrupt conduct during the Qualifiers, with precisely what would be expected of them to be provided at a later date," the ICC stated.

"WhatsApp messages between the players suggest that the players and [Mr Y] were trying to arrange a meeting on 7 September 2019, at which, it is to be inferred, details of what they would be asked to do in the Qualifiers would be given to them. The Players say that this meeting did not in fact take place."

Alex Marshall, ICC General Manager  Integrity Unit, said: "Both Amir and Ashfaq had played cricket at the highest level for long enough to understand the threat from match fixers.

"The two UAE players, attended several ICC anti-corruption education sessions, and knew how to avoid becoming involved in any corrupt activity. Their lengthy ban should serve as a warning to others."

1st ODI report: Chris Woakes paved the way for victory and Joe Root delivered it with ease as England cruised to a five-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the first one-day international on Tuesday with 15 overs to spare.

England bowlers dominated the show against Sri Lanka in the first ODI, with Chris Woakes picking four wickets. AP

Woakes had bowled just seven overs for the national team since he was named England’s player of the year in September, but it was his bowling that settled matters at Chester-le-Street.

He claimed 4-18 from his 10 overs, restricting the weakened tourists to a less-than-competitive 185 all out in 42.3 overs after England won the toss and chose to field.

Jonny Bairstow took 43 off the target in a frenzy of boundary-hitting at the top of the order and, after a brief wobble, Root saw the hosts across the line with 79 not out as England reached 189-5 in 34.5 overs.

After losing 3-0 to England in the T20 series, Sri Lanka went into the ODI opener weakened by the loss of senior players Kusal Mendis, Niroshan Dickwella and Danushka Gunathilaka. Sri Lanka suspended the players and sent them home from its tour after they broke the squad’s anti-coronavirus rules by being pictured outside the team hotel.

Kusal Perera scored a hard-fought 73 off 81 balls and shared a stand of 99 with all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga for Sri Lanka's fourth wicket. Hasaranga had been promoted up the order to No 5 and responded with a typically enterprising 54 off 65, including six fours and a six.

Perera was playing a different game to his teammates in the 10-over powerplay, racing to 32 not out from just 16 balls while England took 3-15 at the other end. Woakes struck twice with the new ball, deceiving Pathum Nissanka with a slow bouncer and taking out Dasun Shanaka via a regulation outside edge. Between those strikes, David Willey made it a debut to forget for Charith Asalanka, nicking to slip for a duck.

England’s hopes of running through the order were held up for more than 20 overs by Perera and Hasaranga before Woakes struck with Hasaranga taking on a bumper but flapping to Liam Livingstone in the deep. The next six wickets were scooped up for just 40 runs, Woakes completing his haul by seeing off Dhananjaya Lakshan.

Willey ended with 3-44, including the wicket of Perera, after taking on the long square boundary and picking out Sam Billings.

In reply, Bairstow cut and drove with disdain. When Binura Fernando dropped short on the pads, Bairstow rocked back and launched a pull for six.

Livingstone was a virtual bystander until he pounded a free hit into the stands, but he was gone two balls later with a mis-hit off Chamika Karunaratne. Bairstow’s 21-ball assault ended in the very next over, dragging Fernando onto his stumps.

Eoin Morgan and Billings both fell cheaply to flat-footed strokes off Dushmantha Chameera, before Perera failed to hold the edge that Moeen Ali offered off his very first ball.

Where England should have been 80-5, when Moeen (28) eventually did depart the hosts were just 15 from victory on 171.

Root had no reason to move out of his comfort zone, scoring only four boundaries during his 87-ball innings. He was leaning on his bat at the non-striker’s end when Sam Curran directed a full toss into the leg-side.

Taunton: Skipper Mithali Raj's second successive fifty went in vain as Sophia Dunkley produced a fighting half-century after Kate Cross' five-wicket haul to help England Women register a five-wicket win over India Women and grab an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series on Wednesday.

Invited to bat, India could manage a below-par 221 in the stipulated 50 overs, build largely around Raj's 92-ball 59 and opener Shafali Verma's 55-ball 44.

Chasing 222 for a win, England batswomen couldn't capitalise on their starts to lose five wickets for 133 in 28.5 overs but Dunkley (73 not out) and Katherine Brunt (33 not out) produced a 92-run partnership for the unconquered sixth wicket to take the team home with 15 balls to spare.

Lauren Winfield Hill (42) and Amy Ellen Jones (28) were the other notable contributors for England in the run chase.

Kate Cross finished with a brilliant spell of 5/34 and was adjudged the Player of the Match. Twitter/@ICC

Raj did not take the field during the England run chase as she developed pain in her neck and her deputy Harmanpreet Kaur led the visiting team. Radha Yadav was the substitute fielder for Raj.

Earlier, the 38-year-old Raj, who had scored a fighting 72 in the first ODI, once again stood out in her 92-ball innings, which was studded with six boundaries but she didn't get any support from the other end as Cross kept chipping away at the wickets.

Put in to bat, Smriti Mandhana (22) and Shafali Verma (44) gave India a good start, adding 56 runs in 11.5 overs before the former played one on to her stumps to become the first victim of Cross.

Jemimah Rodrigues (8), who replaced Punam Raut in the playing XI, continued to struggle with the bat as Cross induced a leading edge from the batter to leave India at 76 for two in 16 overs.

Verma, who scored seven fours in her 55-ball innings, was then flummoxed by Sophie Ecclestone with wicketkeeper Amy Ellen Jones producing a sharp stumping in the next over.

Raj and vice-captain Kaur then steadied the innings, sharing 68 runs off 103 balls to take India across the 100-run mark.

However, Cross once again returned to break the partnership, this time getting rid of Kaur, who ended up getting a leading edge — similar to Rodrigues — and was easily pouched by the bowler.

New batter Deepti Sharma got one boundary but paid the price for a poor shot as she was caught by Dunkley in the deep with Cross being the beneficiary again.

Sneh Rana, one of the star performers of the one-off Test, too fell in similar fashion with her leading edge being caught by Heather Knight after a bit of a juggle as Cross claimed her fifth victim.

Taniya Bhatia then edged one to the keeper, while Shikha Pandey too was caught behind as Indian women slumped to 181 for 8 in 44 overs.

Raj was then run out while trying to steal a second run. Jhulan Goswami and Poonam Yadav then stitched 29 runs off 22 balls to swell the Indian total.
