The ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India had an unofficial start on Friday as Pakistan took on New Zealand and Bangladesh played against Sri Lanka in the first warm-up matches for the upcoming ICC event. In Hyderabad, New Zealand gunned down a 346-run target to register a five-wicket win over Pakistan, while Bangladesh handed Sri Lanka a crushing seven-wicket defeat in Guwahati.

Williamson shines on return

In the New Zealand vs Pakistan game, Kane Williamson showed his class in his first competitive outing in six months while Rachin Ravindra sizzled at the top of the order in New Zealand’s five-wicket victory.

Barring the openers, Pakistan batters including Mohammad Rizwan (103 retired hurt off 91), Babar Azam (80 off 84) and Saud Shaukeel (75 off 53) had a good hit in the middle, helping their team post a daunting 345 for five in 50 overs.

New Zealand cruised to the target in 43.4 overs with contributions from Ravindra (97 off 72), Williamson (54 off 50), Daryl Mitchell (59 retired hurt off 57) and Mark Chapman (65 not out off 41).

Ravindra, batting at the top in place of Will Young, gave the team management another opening option alongside Devon Conway, who lasted only one ball in the steep run chase.

With the focus firmly on managing players’ workload ahead of the main competition, Williamson walked back into the dressing room after scoring a sublime half-century.

Williamson, who continues his knee rehabilitation from the injury he suffered in the IPL in March, only came out to bat on Friday and will not be part of the World Cup opener against England on October 5.

However, considering the way he batted against the Pakistan attack, it certainly seemed he was ready on the batting front if not the other areas of the game.

A couple of back foot punches in the cover region off a seriously quick Haris Rauf showed that Williamson was very much close to his best.

Ravindra at the other end pretty much dealt in boundaries with his first 24 runs coming off only fours. His entertaining innings comprised 16 fours and a six.

Number four Mitchell put New Zealand on the cusp of a comfortable win before retiring out. Chapman and Jimmy Neesham then bullied an ordinary-looking Pakistan attack to pick up a confidence-boosting win for New Zealand.

While the majority of the Pakistan batters would be pleased with their efforts, the bowlers have plenty to worry about.

Star pacer Shaheen Afridi did not bowl in the game, allowing Haris Rauf and Hasan Ali to audition for the new ball in the absence of injured Naseem Shah.

Rauf bowled only a four over spell and leaked 36 runs without a wicket. Hasan Ali, who is back in the Pakistan set up after nine months, was decent in his opening spell before going for runs in the later stages of New Zealand innings.

Leggie Shadab Khan did not bowl and Usama Mir (2/68 in 10) took couple of wickets in his absence. Part-time spinner Salman Agha (1/60 in 8) was easy meat for the opposition and so was left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz (0/55 in 7). Mohammad Wasim Jr (1/58 in 7) too proved expensive on a tough day for the bowlers.

After Pakistan opted to bat, Babar played his trademark drives on the off-side and ended with eight fours and two sixes. The game was played behind closed doors as it coincided with festivities surrounding Ganesh idol immersion.

Bangladesh sink Sri Lanka

Bangladesh handed Sri Lanka a crushing seven-wicket defeat in their first warm-up match of the ICC ODI World Cup, here on Friday to make a winning start.

Chasing 264, Bangladesh rode on half-centuries from top-order batters Tanzid Hasan (84), Litton Das (61) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (67 not out) to romp home in 42 overs at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium.

Hasan cracked 10 fours and two sixes to make a sturdy 84 off 88 balls, while Das hit 10 fours in his 56-ball 61. The two batters added 131 for the opening wicket.

Mushfiqur Rahim remained unbeaten on 35.

Earlier in the day, opting to bat Sri Lanka were bowled out for 263 in 49.1 overs with Pathum Nissanka and Dhananjaya de Silva scoring fifties.

Opening batter Nissanka added 104 for the first wicket with Kusal Perera (34) but despite getting a strong start, Sri Lanka’s middle-order could not capitalise.

Nissanka made his 68 off 64 balls with eight fours and a six, while de Silva took 79 deliveries to score 55 with two fours and a six.

It will be somewhat of a full circle moment when defending champions England take on New Zealand in the opening clash of the 2023 ODI Cricket World Cup in Ahmedabad.

Four years back, England, under Eoin Morgan, had defied all odds to win their maiden ODI World Cup title, by the narrowest of margins, against a New Zealand side that had a never-say-die attitude till the very end.

However, come the World Cup in India in less than two weeks’ time, it’s time to start everything from scratch, and England couldn’t have asked for a better opposition than New Zealand to open their campaign.

This time, however, it will be a different kind of challenge for England in the Indian subcontinent. The likes of Harry Brook and Gus Atkinson are still relatively new to the ODI setup, and are yet to be tested on Indian pitches. The defending champions’ biggest boost ahead of the World Cup, though, was the return of all-rounder Ben Stokes, who came out of ODI retirement in August and has already played a couple of impressive knocks against the Kiwis in the recent ODI series.

Whether Jos Buttler and Co can go out there and defend the title remains to be seen, but it’s safe to say that England have stuck to their aggressive brand of cricket in ODIs.

Here’s all you need to know about England, from their recent form guide to their key player:

ICC ranking: 5

World Cup best performance: Champions (2019)

Strengths

England seem to have a settled core unit heading to the 2023 World Cup. Eoin Morgan, their World Cup-winning skipper, retired from international cricket last year, but Jos Buttler took over the limited overs captaincy after it and has done a pretty decent job of it.

England have Buttler, Adil Rashid, Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone who have been playing together for a long time.

With the return of Stokes, England, on paper, seem to have a well-balanced side. Having said that, Stokes displayed his full potential with the bat during the third ODI against New Zealand recently, where he scored 182 off just 124 deliveries, which was also his highest score for England in the 50-over format.

That means, once Stokes gets going with the bat, it would make life difficult for opposition bowlers.

Weaknesses

Spin will play a pivotal role at the World Cup in India. And, that is one area where England are lacking at the moment.

Yes, they have Adil Rashid as a regular who has an immense experience in ODIs, but he doesn’t have a regular spinner who can partner him.

They do have all-rounders in Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone who can bowl spin, but how effective they can be, should Adil Rashid endure an off-day, remains a concern.

Form might be on Moeen Ali’s side after having registered figures of 4/50 against New Zealand, but how effective can he be on Indian soil (one wicket in six ODIs in India) is something England need to worry about.

Afterall, what England needs is someone who can stand up as a lead spinner in Rashid’s absence, and should a situation like that arise, then Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone will have their task cut out.

Another concern is Harry Brook’s form. Jason Roy’s fitness concern meant he had to make way for Harry Brook in England’s World Cup squad, but Brook is enduring a poor run of form since his knock of 80 against South Africa in January.

Since then, Brook has played just four ODIs and registered scores of 6, 25, 2 and 10. That’s not a good read if you’re battling expectations and pressure to perform.

Key player

Ben Stokes would undoubtedly play a crucial role in England’s 2023 World Cup campaign, just like he did in 2019.

His decision to come out of ODI retirement might have been the best thing to have happened to England ahead of the World Cup. It’s like he never left, having initially retired from ODIs in July 2022, only to come back more than a year later.

Stokes adds balance and flexibility to the side. In his first ODI since returning, he scored a half-century against New Zealand and followed it up with a fine knock of 182 two matches later. That was like Stokes sending a warning to other teams, that he is still a force to be reckoned with.

Matches played/won/lost since 2019 World Cup

Matches played: 43; Won: 19; Lost: 16; No result: 8

Form guide (Last 10 matches, most recent first): NR, W, NR,L, W, W, W, W, W, L

Record in India since 2019 World Cup: Played: 3; Won 1; Lost 2

Major changes in the squad since 2019 WC: Eoin Morgan’s retirement from international cricket means Jos Buttler has taken over as England captain. There’s no Jason Roy, who was part of the 2019 World Cup, and instead Harry Brook features in the squad.

The current pace attack consists of Mark Wood, Gus Atkinson and Reece Topley, while the 2019 edition saw Jofra Archer leading the attack with Liam Plunkett and Wood.

Had it not been for an elbow injury, Archer would have found himself in the main England squad for the World Cup.

World Cup squad: Jos Buttler (captain), Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, David Willey, Mark Wood, Chris Woakes.

Schedule

5 October: vs New Zealand in Ahmedabad

10 October: vs Bangladesh Dharamsala

26 October: vs Sri Lanka in Bengaluru

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly earned a revenue of Rs 377.49 crore from the inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), that was held in Mumbai earlier this year.

BCCI treasurer, Ashish Shelar, in his report during the BCCI Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Goa on Monday, said that the revenue was inclusive of all five teams.

According to an income analysis in Shelar’s report, six per cent of BCCI’s total income for the 2022-23 financial year came from the WPL.

Further breakup of the revenues include 37 per cent share from the Indian Premier League (IPL), 38 per cent from media rights sale and 10 per cent from the senior men’s cricket team’s international tours.

This is to bring to your notice that due to Covid 19, the cricketing season in 20-21 was cut down to only three tournaments. The domestic season of 2022-22 was at full strength except a few junior tournaments, like Under 16, etc.

“However, the year 2022-23 brought back all the hopes and confidence to conduct the entire domestic season with enthusiasm. The baton handed over to me by my predecessors in a very healthy financial position, and I will make sure that it grows stronger as time passes… The BCCI has proved to the sports world how standards can be maintained in all situations,” Shelar informed state association members, as per a report in Times of India.

“The baton handed over to me by my predecessors in a very healthy financial position and I will make sure that it grows stronger as time passes to see in a position and where the BCCI stands today is a result of collective effort by all the ex and present officials. The broad horizon of vision in the form of leadership along with strong commitment of all members of the BCCI has taken the sport of cricket to such a respectable height in a span of very few years.

“The dedication and determination put in by the BCCI has made sure that the BCCI remains ethically and financially strong at all times. The BCCI has proved to the sports world how standard can be maintained in all situations (sic),” he added in his report.

The inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League was held in Mumbai between 4 March and 26 March this year with five teams —Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, UP Warriorz, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Giants, taking part.

Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians won the title, beating Delhi Capitals by seven wickets in the final.

Shreyas Iyer made a resounding comeback to the Indian side with a superb century that paved the way for India’s impressive 99-run victory in the second ODI against Australia. Iyer, who had to undergo back surgery and was sidelined for six months, hit his stride almost immediately and forged a match-winning partnership with Shubman Gill. He was dismissed after scoring 105 runs off 90 balls.

Reflecting on his journey, Iyer, who was awarded Player of the Match, said that he had worked tirelessly in recent months and there were moments where he felt quite isolated, but kept working hard.

The 28-year-old cricketer made his return during the Asia Cup, but was then sidelined once again after a back spasm flared up in the middle of the tournament. He said that he was thrilled to be back in the dressing room as he wanted to be with the team even when he was watching the action unfold on television.

During this conversation, Iyer also said that he was quite flexible and had confidence in his game to be able to deliver at any batting position. However, he said that there was no chance he would be able to flick away the number 3 position from ‘all time batting great’ Virat Kohli.

“I am flexible, ready to bat any position, whatever my team needs me to do. Virat (Kohli) is one of the greats, there’s no chance of stealing that (number 3) spot from him. I just need to keep scoring wherever (at any position) I bat,” Iyer said at the post-match presentation.

“I keep telling myself competition is against me. It is about mindset that I maintain especially when the chips are down. My mind was fluctuating at times but I was trying to stay away from the outside noise. As they say ignorance is bliss so taking one step a time and staying in the present and not thinking about what happened and what will happen in the future.”

“I was desperate to come back and come back strong. I was waiting to convert the starts which I got in the previous games. Today I got the opportunity, I am grateful,” said Iyer.

“To be honest I was not doubting my abilities because I knew I was batting brilliantly in the nets, also the start I got against Pakistan (in the Asian Cup). Just a matter of one innings and I knew it was around the corner, thankfully I was able to execute,” he added.

Given the circumstances, Iyer rates his third ODI hundred very highly. “It was one of my finest innings especially coming out of an injury. I was eagerly waiting to come back and perform for the team. All these game we are getting before the World Cup, it is a good platform for us, especially me as I have not got a lot of games under my belt.”

India had rested Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah for the first two matches against Australia. Now, with the series in the bag, these players will walk back into the side and it will be interesting to see the players who make away for the experienced players.

Regarding the selection process, KL Rahul clarified during post-match presentation, “It’s not our decision to make; our roles are well-defined. Everyone in the XI needs to focus on their role. Everyone has experienced this before; you must keep improving and await your opportunities.”

The loss was Australia’s fifth consecutive ODI defeat, and stand-in captain Steve Smith acknowledged the need to address issues and turn things around as the team heads into the World Cup.

Iyer refused to read too much into Australia’s form ahead of their World Cup clash in Chennai on 8 October.

“We know how the Australian team is. The way they plan their stuff, I am sure they are playing these games as practice games and they want to build momentum going forward.

“They are experimenting ahead of the World Cup and also they are giving chances to players who can get a fair chance to see how the conditions are in India.

“At the same time they play challenging cricket, I am sure they would be planning well in the future games against India and also when I come in to bat. We are never going to take them lightly, they can hurt you at times.”

Former India batter Gautam Gambhir believes Babar Azam has the potential to wrap up as the top performer with the bat in the upcoming 2023 ICC ODI World Cup.

During a recent interaction with Star Sports, Gambhir was asked to pick a batter who could set the World Cup on fire. He was given a number of options to choose from.

The list included some world-class cricketers like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Kane Williamson, Joe Root, David Warner and Babar as well. Gambhir did not hesitate much to take the name of the Pakistan captain. According to him, Babar possesses all the qualities to put up a better performance than the other anchormen.

To give logic to his statement, Gambhir underlined Babar’s composed approach as the Pakistan opener gives himself time to settle down at the crease. The ex-cricketer, however, made sure to acknowledge the quality of Kohli, Rohit, Williamson and Root. But he thinks Babar will keep the upper hand among them. Gambhir went on to add that Babar stands out from the competition because he has enough of time to play his shots.

“Babar Azam can set this ODI World Cup on fire. I have witnessed a lot of players with plenty of time to bat. I think that Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson and Joe Root are there. But Babar Azam has got a different level of capability,” Gambhir explained during the conversation.

Gambhir’s appreciatory remarks came following Babar Azam’s dismal show in the recently concluded Asia Cup. The Pakistan skipper pulled off a roaring start to the continental tournament with a commendable 151-run knock against Nepal.

But he failed to continue the rhythm in the following games where he returned scores of 17, 10 and 29 against Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka respectively. Despite the poor performance in the Asia Cup, Babar still remains the world’s no. 1 ODI batter in the ICC rankings.

Looking at his international career thus far, Babar has featured in 108 ODIs for Pakistan and has aggregated a total of 5,409 runs at a spectacular batting average of 58.16. The right-handed batter has 19 centuries and 28 fifty-plus scores in the 50-over format. Babar will look to return to form in the ODI World Cup where Pakistan will begin their campaign with a match against the Netherlands on 6 October.

Team India began their final preparations for the ICC World Cup that it hosts in less than two weeks’ time with a confident five-wicket victory over Australia in the first of three ODIs on Friday.

Mohammed Shami led the way with a haul of 5/51, helping the Men in Blue bowl Australia out for 276 after opting to field. Shubman Gill (74) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (71) then got the hosts off to a solid start with a 142-run opening stand.

KL Rahul (58 not out) — leading the side in Rohit Sharma’s absence — and Suryakumar Yadav (50) then came to the rescue after India were reduced to 185/4 from 142/0, stitching an 80-run fifth-wicket stand that put them on the path to victory.

India vs Australia, 1st ODI in Mohali: As it happened

Surya, fighting for a place in India’s middle-order, was dismissed right after bringing up his half-century and was unable to see his team through to victory, the responsibility of which was ultimately fulfilled by Rahul with a four and a six off Sean Abbott in the penultimate over.

Surya, however, did make a strong claim for a place in the Indian middle-order with the temperament that he displayed during the pressure situation, maintaining a disciplined approach for the most part.

Shami, too, has made it all the more difficult for regular skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid to bench him with his five-wicket haul that came in energy-sapping conditions in Mohali.

The Bengal pacer ended up bagging the Player of the Match award for his efforts and commented on the testing conditions during the post-match presentation ceremony.

“It depends on the captain and the game situation, but despite the heat you feel like bowling 4-5 overs with the new ball. I enjoyed the wicket of Marsh, that’s a different feeling when you get the outside edge, when you control your swing nicely. It was important to hit the right lengths on this wicket, either at full pace or go slow, but bowling the right lengths were key,” Shami said during the post-match presentation ceremony.

India skipper KL Rahul too was happy with the commitment shown by his players in the hot and humid conditions in Mohali on Friday.

“I think the intensity in the afternoon was great, after Colombo this felt like heaven in the start but it was really hot and humid. It gets tough and physically challenging, but we’ve all worked on our fitness and that’s showing on the field,” said Rahul.

Suryakumar, meanwhile, reflected on what had been going wrong for him in the 50-over format all this while, and how he managed to rectify it tonight. Surya had been dismissed for a hat-trick of ducks during the three India-Australia ODIs that took place in March this year right after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and spent a majority of the recently-concluded Asia Cup on the bench.

“I was dreaming of this type of innings when I started playing this format. Trying to bat deep and finishing the game, unfortunately couldn’t do it today but very happy with the result. I’d been wondering what had been happening for me in this format, the teams and bowlers were the same.

“I went back and reflected and realized I was probably rushing things a bit so I decided to play slower and take it deep. I think it’s the first time I haven’t played a sweep,” SKY said after India’s victory.

Pakistan legends Javed Miandad and Misbah-ul-Haq have backed skipper Babar Azam for the team’s below-par showing in the Asia Cup. Pakistan exited in the Super Four after losing resoundingly to India and then on the last ball to Sri Lanka in the virtual semi-final.

Both stalwarts of Pakistani cricket urged the management to not get into panic mode based on two defeats. They also urged others to step up as pinning hopes entirely on Babar Azam is not fair.

“Why blame Babar Azam only when the rest of the team didn’t perform as well in the Asia Cup matches against India and Sri Lanka,” Miandad said at a match of the 40’s Global Cricket Event in Karachi.

Both Miandad and Misbah have played World Cups in India and advised the players to not let that affect them psychologically.

“Look our team is not as bad as it played in the Asia Cup. It has plenty of potential to do well in the World Cup. Only thing is how quickly our players cope and adjust to playing in Indian conditions before big crowds and in a country where they will encounter some hostility,” Miandad said.

Miandad, who had three tenures as Pakistan coach, asked for the World Cup squad to be announced soon to get rid of any ambiguity and ensure clarity in the team.

“The sooner this suspense about the final squad is ended the better it is for us in the mega-event,” Miandad said.

Meanwhile Misbah urged everyone in the squad to share burden of responsibility. “Don’t just expect Babar to perform every time. This is not possible. This team has been successful as a collective unit and they must remember that even in India,” he said.

He said Babar had now been the captain for three years and he would only get better in taking tactical and leadership decisions with time.

“Now is not the time to talk about his captaincy. He is someone who can be relied upon in the World Cup as a captain and batsman.” The former captain also felt that speculations and discussions about division in the dressing room and rumours about a player leaking inside information would only damage the team spirit.

“I have worked with these players as captain, coach and chief selector and I back them to do well in the World Cup,” Misbah said.

BCCI Chairman of Selectors Ajit Agarkar on Monday explained the reasoning behind the team management resting senior players including Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for the first two ODIs against Australia, clarifying that they needed a “mental break” ahead of the ODI World Cup in October.

The team management rested Rohit, Virat, Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav for the first two ODIs, but the quartet will return for the third ODI in Rajkot. KL Rahul will lead the side in Rohit’s absence. The first ODI will take place in Mohali on 22 September,  while the teams will travel to Indore for the second ODI on 24 September. The series comes to a close on 27 September.

IND vs AUS: With guys like Ashwin, game time not much of a concern, says Rohit

“Rohit and Virat have been around forever. Hardik is an important player for us. We want to manage them. Kuldeep is in great form. It also gives us a chance to look at some of the other guys. That is the thinking.

“Luckily we got a fair amount of cricket in the Asia Cup. If not, we would have looked at it some other way,” Agarkar said during the press conference in which he announced the squad on Monday.

“At some stage, the guys need a mental break, not such a bad thing leading up to the tournament. In the third game, everyone will be available to play. We will play our World Cup squad,” he added.

Ruturaj Gaikwad has been named in the squad as an extra opening batter, while Washington Sundar and Ravichandran Ashwin also find places in the squad in place of Kuldeep Yadav and the injured Axar Patel.

‘Shreyas Iyer is fit’: Agarkar

Shreyas Iyer missed the entirety of India’s Super Four campaign in the Asia Cup as well as the final against Sri Lanka due to a back spasm. Iyer, however, was included in the squad for all three ODIs against Australia.

Agarkar said the middle-order batter was fit enough to play all three matches.

“He’s not picked up a stress fracture; otherwise he wouldn’t be in the squad. He’s fine – whether he’s batting or fielding. At the moment, he’s fit; that’s why we picked him in the squad. We are hopeful that he gets through all these three games,” the 45-year-old explained.

“He’s worked incredibly hard over the last many months to be at this stage, to be fit. Fortunately for him, it wasn’t a massive injury, but he did pick up a niggle. He’ll have to get through these games, and we are hopeful that he will. At the moment, he is fine,” Agarkar added.

Iyer only returned to competitive cricket in the group stage of the Asia Cup, following a prolonged absence due to a back injury. Iyer the underwent surgery for the injury before undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

India will begin their World Cup campaign against Australia in Chennai on 8 October. Their marquee clash against Pakistan takes place in Ahmedabad on 14 October.

India named their squad for the upcoming three match ODI series against Australia starting 22 September with R Ashwin the highlight inclusion. Ashwin and Washington Sundar are the key additions into the India squad ahead of the World Cup. Both off-spinners will be fighting for a solitary World Cup spot if Axar Patel doesn’t get fit in time for the global event beginning 5 October.

Ashwin does not have enough international match practice in the 50-over format with his last ODI appearance coming in January 2022. But that doesn’t have India captain Rohit Sharma bothered.

“With the kind of experience Ashwin has, close to 100 Tests (94), close to 150 ODIs (113) and yes it is all in the past but he has been consistently playing Test cricket and with guys like Ashwin having game time is not so much of a concern,” said Rohit after the squad was announced on Tuesday evening.

“…with guys like him, it’s all in the head, more than body and the stuff. We made the decision speaking to him and understanding where he is at with regards to his body and stuff like that.

“It’s not like he is not playing any cricket. Yes, he hasn’t played the format but he has been playing Test cricket in West Indies, and if I am not wrong, played TNPL as well and although no comparison there but there is still some cricket there, and it gives us chance to look at how he is bowling,” he said.

The selectors have rested in-form Kuldeep Yadav for the first two ODIs. Kuldeep took nine wickets in the recently concluded Asia Cup and bagged the Player of the Series honour.

Asked if that was done to keep an element of surprise in the World Cup, Rohit said, “Kuldeep is a wrist spinner and needs rhythm but we also deliberated that his bowling form is great and as Ajit (chief selector Agarkar) said we needed to give some of the players (a) chance as they played only one match in Asia Cup and are there in WC squad and we needed to check them as well.

“Kuldeep, we have seen for last 18 months and we didn’t want to expose him. He will be playing in the last match and the best decision to see him is in (the) third match. We have two practice games and he will be back in bowling rhythm,” said the skipper.

With many first-choice players rested, the fringe players – such as Tilak Varma and Ruturaj Gaikwad – will get an opportunity to make themselves count in case of an injury later.

“Our endeavour is to give everyone a chance. If we only play 11 through the year, then you can’t create bench strength. You can see that some other teams are facing injury problems because it also involves (a) lot of travelling and we have to play 11 matches and crisscross the country,” Rohit said when asked about travelling involved over the course of the World Cup.

“So, we will have a lot of travelling and a lot of matches. We want to make sure that some of the guys sitting out have enough confidence by playing a few games and not like suddenly they are thrown in. Eventually players need to be ready and anyone can be called at any time.

“You need to remain strong and sportspersons need to be ready. If you are summoned, you need to perform as we have seen for years, chances do come. Bench strength is important and we always try to find a chance to give people chance,” he added.

After bundling out Sri Lanka for 50 on Sunday in the Asia Cup final, Indian captain Rohit Sharma couldn't hide his delight at the performance of his fast bowlers

Team India dished out one of its most dominant performances ever on Sunday, sounding a warning to England, Australia and other powerhouses of the sport ahead of the ICC World Cup.

The Men in Blue had been the team to beat in the 16th edition of the Asia Cup that returned to the ODI format in the build-up to ICC’s showpiece event. India had dished out clinical performances against Nepal and Pakistan and had recovered from a batting collapse to beat Sri Lanka.

A defeat against Bangladesh was disappointing, but it came against an Indian team that was missing several first-choice players, and was by no means an indication of what was in store.

On Sunday in a sold-out final at Colombo’s R Premadasa Stadium, the Indians produced the kind of collecting fast-bowling performance that was reminiscent of the destruction unleashed by some of the greatest bowling attacks in cricketing history.

Sri Lanka, who were banking on home support to halt the mighty Indians on their tracks after falling short earlier this week, simply did not know what hit them and were bundled out for a humiliating total of 50.

Given the sheer quality in the Indian batting lineup, chasing the target down was hardly a challenge and Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan finished the job in a little over six overs.

There were a number of players who played their part in India’s journey to their eighth Asian title. From Ishan Kishan’s defiant 82 against Pakistan in Pallekele and Virat Kohli and KL Rahul slamming tons against the same side in the Super 4s in Colombo. Kuldeep Yadav was the standout bowler in the campaign, and was fittingly adjudged the ‘Player of the Tournament’.

Skipper Rohit Sharma and Gill too have been in a rich vein of form with the latter dishing out a majestic 121 against Bangladesh that ultimately went in vain.

On Sunday, however, it was Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Siraj alone who soaked up all the limelight. And fittingly so, with one of the most destructive spells of fast-bowling witnessed in recent memory.

Indian pace department fires as a unit

India delivered just the kind of bowling performance that would have had previous bowling coach Bharat Arun and ex-captain Virat Kohli — two individuals who have had the biggest role in developing the current pace unit — beaming with pride.

India had started off solidly with the ball in each of its six outings in the tournament, including against Nepal and Bangladesh. However, while the opposition batters managed to build a steady partnership or two after a wobbly start in the preceding fixtures, Team India simply did not let go of the stranglehold on Sunday. Especially after Siraj’s sensational second over.

Sri Lanka skipper Shanaka hoped to post a competitive total on the board after opting to bat, and would have backed his spinners to test the Indian batters in tricky Premadasa conditions under lights.

Instead, a brief spell of rain just after toss that delayed the start of the game by about forty minutes resulted in the ball getting plenty of movement. And the Indian new-ball pair of Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah would make the most of the bowling-friendly conditions on offer.

Bumrah has been in fine form ever since he made his long-awaited comeback in the tour of Ireland, dismissing the dangerous Kusal Perera in the very first over to get the Indians off to an ideal start.

From thereon, however, it was a Siraj show all the way.

After starting off with a maiden, the Royal Challengers Bangalore pacer struck at the start of his second over with Pathum Nissanka driving a length delivery towards point, where Ravindra Jadeja dove to his right to pull off a fine catch. Siraj would then have Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka — the backbone of Sri Lanka’s in-form middle-order — dismissed in successive deliveries.

Samarawickrama was beaten by an inswinging delivery and got trapped LBW while Asalanka — Sri Lanka’s hero against Pakistan on Thursday — was early into a cover drive and chipped the ball straight to Ishan Kishan inside the circle.

Dhananjaya de Silva survived the hat-trick delivery, pushing the ball down the ground for a four, but would perish while attempting to poke an a delivery moving away from him, getting caught-behind as a result.

Despite becoming only the first Indian bowler in ODI history to bag four wickets in one over, Siraj wasn’t done. He would then complete his maiden ODI five-for in a space of 16 deliveries by castling Shanaka four a four-ball duck, breaching his defence with an inswinger after setting the Sri Lanka skipper up with a series of full, wide deliveries.

“The batters were getting beaten for the last two matches, today I found the edges. I just tried to hit the areas. The wicket was seaming for the last two matches, today there was swing so I tried to make the batters play as much as possible. Because it was swinging, I thought of putting the balls up to the batters. The way I thought, I executed it and the plan was successful,” said Player of the Match Siraj during the post-match presentation.

There was, of course, one more Ronaldoesque celebration in store for Siraj after completing the five-for. The Hyderabadi would enter an elite club of bowlers with six-wicket hauls in an ODI innings by snaring the wicket of Kusal Mendis — Sri Lanka’s leading run-scorer in this edition of the continental event who top-scored for his side with a 34-ball 17 that contained three boundaries. Mendis was looking to attack the bowler who was in the middle of a dream spell by going for a cover drive, and ended up hearing the death rattle behind him.

Sri Lanka’s last hope had been snuffed out, and it was only a matter of time before they were bundled out.

While Siraj had unleashed mayhem in the powerplay with Bumrah playing a supporting role by maintaining pressure from one end, Hardik Pandya gave a good indicator of his handiness with the ball by polishing off the tail in the blink of an eye.

The India vice-captain finished with 3/3, grabbing the last two wickets in successive balls. Sri Lanka by then had managed to avoid getting bowled out for their lowest-ever total, but could go only so far as bringing up the team half-century.

Sri Lankan batters crumble under pressure

Though they still aren’t quite the side that used to be world beaters back in the 1990s and 2000s, right up to the 2014-15 season, Sri Lanka had been a competitive outfit and their performance against Pakistan on Thursday was a reflection of their “never-say-die” attitude.

The approach of some of the key batters, especially against a rampaging Indian attack that simply wasn’t willing to give them an inch to wriggle out of the tight corner, was therefore perplexing to say the least.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri was among those who commented on the Sri Lankan batters’ need to go after the shots and chase the ball outside the off stump in the face of ferocious fast-bowling from the Indians. Shastri, who was on commentary duty in the tournament, observed that the wicket was going to “do a bit” in the initial phase of the innings but would have gradually eased out sooner rather than later.

All they had to do, was weather the storm early on, wait for Siraj’s spell to end before unleashing some of their shots around the halfway stage of the innings. By then India would have lost some of the intensity that they had built up during Siraj and Bumrah’s new-ball spells and the likes of Mendis would have been batting in a lot more relaxed state of mind.

Coach Chris Silverwood too wasn’t happy with how the Lankans batted in the big game, especially after showing so much promise earlier in the tournament.

“It is below par. The way we got dismissed is very disappointing, think there’s a lot of reflection to be done in the dressing. I think today we’ve come up against a very high class bowling attack, thought Siraj was superb. At the same time I think we made our own life difficult as well,” Silverwood said after Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan chased down the 51-run target in a little over six overs.

“I’m sure there’ll be a lot of questions asked, but best to assess it in the morning when the emotions have calmed down,” added the Englishman.

Sri Lanka will hope to quickly put the embarrassing defeat behind them and begin their final preparations for the World Cup that begins in a less than three weeks. India too can’t afford to party for too long after their clinical victory.

As satisfying as their performance was on Sunday, they still have an ICC trophy drought to conquer over the course of the next two months and will have to quickly shift their attention to that goal.

India and Sri Lanka know a thing or two about success as far as the Asia Cup is concerned. These two sides, after all, have reached more finals since the turn of the millennium than either Pakistan or Bangladesh have in the history of the competition.

They also happen to have a total of 13 titles between them, with India slightly ahead on that count with seven.

It is, therefore, only fair to assume they’re used to seeing each other in the final hurdle of the Asian Cricket Council’s premier event. Sunday’s showdown will be the eighth instance of India and Sri Lanka battling it out for Asian supremacy. And the Men in Blue have the bragging rights as far as their head-to-head record in Asia Cup finals is concerned, leading their neighbours to the south east 4 to 3.

Read | IND vs SL Head-to-head, records in ODIs, stats from Premadasa

With the a majority of the tournament taking place in their backyard, defending champions Sri Lanka will certainly be backing themselves to win consecutive titles. A seventh title would make them the joint-most successful team in Asia Cup history alongside India.

The Men in (light) Blue, however, have been the team to beat in this tournament, as far as their performance against Pakistan in the Super 4s would suggest. Vanquishing a full-strength team led by Rohit Sharma therefore, is going to take quite the effort on the part of Dasun Shanaka’s men.

Fitness worries for Team India

India were dealt a wake-up call in the form of a six-run defeat at the hands of Bangladesh — their first Asia Cup loss against the Tigers since 2012 — on Friday.

As disappointing as the defeat was, especially with Shubman Gill’s magnificent 121 going in vain, the defeat gave skipper Rohit and head coach Rahul Dravid some valuable insight into how their reserves were pulling up ahead of both the Asia Cup final and the ICC World Cup that India hosts next month.

The match also added to India’s worries as far as the fitness of some of their players is concerned. Axar Patel produced quite the counter-attack with the bat with his 34-ball 42, taking the game to the very end before falling prey to Mustafizur Rahman’s guile. Though, in the process, he ended up injuring his hamstring.

India all-rounder Axar Patel injured his hamstring during the Super Four clash against Bangladesh, in which he scored a 34-ball 42. AP

Not only did that niggle rule him out of the final, the left-arm spinner will also miss India’s three ODIs against Australia and also appears doubtful for the initial phase of India’s World Cup campaign.

Also a worry for the Indians ahead of the final is the fitness of Shreyas Iyer, who had been left out of the XI in the Super 4s clash against Pakistan due to a back spasm and hasn’t been in action since.

Iyer is a vital cog in the Indian middle order and provided the solution to India’s No. 4 dilemma in the build-up to the World Cup. His recent fitness woes however, makes one wonder if he was rushed into action in the Asia Cup and perhaps could have waited till the Australia ODIs to make his long-awaited return.

As far as Axar is concerned, India have drafted Washington Sundar into the squad but will not likely need his services given they do have Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur as their all-rounders.

Lankans look towards spin department

Fitness concerns have not affected India alone in the Asia Cup. Pakistan pacer Naseem Shah injured his shoulder against India, and things have deteriorated to the extent that his participation in the World Cup appears doubtful.

It has also affected the Sri Lankan team. Off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana has been ruled out of the final after “straining his hamstring” while fielding during their virtual semi-final against Pakistan, which they ended up winning in thrilling fashion to enter the final.

The ‘hosts’ have drafted in a like-for-like replacement in Sahan Arachchige, who made his international debut during the World Cup qualifier in Zimbabwe in July. Like Sundar, though, Arachchige is unlikely to be drafted into the XI for the big final, given Sri Lanka also have a leg-spinner in Dushan Hemantha in their squad who could lend some variety to their attack.

Sri Lankan spinners had grabbed all 10 wickets and had played a key role in halting India’s charge after skipper Rohit went on a rampage in the first powerplay. Nine of those wickets were shared between Dunith Wellalage (5/40) and Charith Asalanka (4/18) on a Premadasa pitch that was vastly different from the one used in the India-Pakistan Super 4s encounter.

And despite the fact that they have some talented pacers in their lineup, Sri Lanka are likely to deploy spin as their primary weapon against Rohit and Co.

Wellalage had quite the outing against the Indians, following up his maiden international five-for with an unbeaten 42 runs that briefly gave the Lankans hope of chasing down the 214-run target. The 20-year-old became the talk of the town after that performance, but will have also made him a primary target.

Left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage had decimated the Indian batting order in the Asia Cup Super Four clash. AP

As for their batting lineup, Sri Lanka had made one key change at the top of the order by bringing in Kusal Perera as Pathum Nissanka’s opening partner in place of Dimuth Karunaratne.

Karunaratne’s run tally had barely crossed 50 in four outings with a strike rate of 72, and it was clear his presence was hindering the Lankans from starting swiftly.

Though Perera was dismissed for 17 against Pakistan, he struck four boundaries in eight deliveries. The dashing wicketkeeper-batter, whose batting style is often compared with that of the ‘Matara Mauler’ Sanath Jayasuriya, did more in those eight balls than Karunaratne in the entire campaign, and ensured he’ll keep his place in the XI on Sunday.

Squads:

India: Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul (wk), Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami, Washington Sundar, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Prasidh Krishna, Tilak Varma

Sri Lanka: Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis (wk), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Dasun Shanaka (c), Dunith Wellalage, Pramod Madushan, Matheesha Pathirana, Sahan Arachchige, Dushan Hemantha, Kasun Rajitha, Binura Fernando, Dimuth Karunaratne

Washington Sundar was on Saturday added to India’s squad ahead of the Asia Cup 2023 final against Sri Lanka, with Axar Patel ruled out of the summit clash due to injury.

Axar injured his hamstring during his 34-ball 42 against Bangladesh on Friday and is set to miss the final that takes place at Colombo’s R Premadasa Stadium on Sunday.

The left-arm spinner is also likely to miss the three-match ODI series against Australia that takes place right after the Asia Cup, and also appears a doubtful starter for the ICC World Cup, in which hosts India begin their campaign against Australia on 8 October.

Off-spinner Sundar was part of India’s squad for the Asian Games that takes place in Hangzhou, China from 23 September to 8 October. As a spin-bowling all-rounder, Sundar is a near like-for-like replacement for Axar.

Read | How Sri Lanka can trouble India in Sunday’s Asia Cup Final

Quadriceps injuries take time to heal and it could take Axar a good two to three weeks to recover, thus putting his participation in ICC’s showpiece event in doubt.

Axar sustained several injuries during India’s six-run loss to Bangladesh in their last Super Four match on Friday.

“Axar Patel has been ruled out of the Asia Cup final against Sri Lanka due to a left quadriceps strain sustained during India’s Super Four match against Bangladesh on Friday. The men’s Selection Committee has named Mr Washington Sundar as a replacement. The all-rounder arrived in Colombo this evening and has joined the squad,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah said in a release.

More than the swelling on his forearm, it is Axar’s hamstring issue which will keep the Indian team management worried with just three weeks to go for the World Cup.

“Even if it’s not a tear and may be a strain, it would take two weeks to heal. Yesterday, one saw on TV that Axar had a strapping on his thigh which is an indicator that the quadriceps strain was bothering him. If it’s not a Grade 2 tear, he could still play the World Cup but it depends on the extent of injuries. But it’s good to know, he has not sustained any forearm fracture,” a source in the know of things said.

Sundar last played an ODI for India in January 2023. He recently played two T20Is in Ireland. The Tamil Nadu cricketer has so far played in 16 ODIs, scoring 233 runs and also has 16 wickets to his name.

Meanwhile, there’s no clarity on Shreyas Iyer’s participation in the final.

Iyer batted in the nets on Thursday but did not play in the Friday game against Bangladesh as he was not 100 per cent fit.

India would want their first-choice No 4 batter to get fit in time as the World Cup comes closer.

As for the Sri Lankan camp, off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana has been ruled out of the final due to a hamstring injury. The defending champions have since called up Sahan Arachchige as his replacement.

Arachchige made his debut against West Indies in the World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe and has two ODI appearances to his credit.

Team India were given a wake-up call ahead of the 2023 Asia Cup final against Sri Lanka, falling narrowly short against Bangladesh in the final Super Four clash of the tournament on Friday.

Opening batter Shubman Gill’s magnificent 121 in tricky batting conditions at Colombo’s R Premadasa Stadium went in vain as India failed to chase down a target of 266 set by the Tigers.

As a result, Bangladesh defeated India in the Asia Cup (both ODI and T20I) for the first time since 2012.

Gill’s hundred — his fifth overall in ODIs, four of which have been scored this year along — should come as great news for the Indian team during a crucial period in which they have their eyes set not just on an eighth Asian title, but on an ICC trophy that has eluded them for a decade now.

India skipper Rohit Sharma had earlier opted to field and wanted his batters to have a feel of chasing under the lights in Colombo. He also announced as many as five changes to the playing XI, with key players such as Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah getting rested ahead of Sunday’s final against defending champions Sri Lanka.

Rohit defended the team’s decision to field their reserves for what was ultimately a ‘dead rubber’ against Bangladesh, with the latter having already been eliminated from the race to the final.

“We wanted to give some game time to the guys, keeping the bigger picture in mind. Not compromising on how we wanted to play this game. Get in some players who are likely to play the World Cup,” Rohit said in the post-match presentation.

The ‘Hitman’ also heaped praise on Gill as well as all-rounder Axar Patel, who struck a fighting 42 off 34 deliveries to take the game to the very end. Axar however, would fail to get his team over the line with senior pacer Mustafizur Rahman getting rid of both him and Shardul Thakur in a superb penultimate over.

From the team’s perspective, however, Axar has proved himself a valuable option with the bat down the order, and has made a strong case for him to get picked in the final as well.

“Axar batted brilliantly, but couldn’t finish. He showed a lot of character. But credit to the Bangladesh bowlers. Not to forget, Gill’s hundred was brilliant. He backs his game; he knows exactly how he wants to play. Pretty clear on what he wants to do for the team. Look at his form over the last year. Pretty solid against the new ball. Works really hard; there’s no optional practice for Gill,” Rohit added after the match.

Earlier Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan (80) and Towhid Hridoy (54) brought up half-centuries and forged a fifth-wicket partnership worth 101 to steer the Tigers to safety after they were reduced to 59/4. Shakib, who was particularly severe on left-arm spinner Axar, struck six fours and three sixes during his stay at the crease, and was later adjudged the Player of the Match for the same.

He also bagged the wicket of Suryakumar Yadav and collected two maidens during his haul of 1/43 in a 10-over spell.

“Today, I went early and had time to spend on the crease. It was a challenging wicket. It was seaming a bit and it got easier when the ball got older,” said Shakib during the post-match presentation.

The star all-rounder also felt his side would certainly pose a challenge to the other nine teams in the ICC World Cup that gets underway on 5 October and goes on till 19 November.

‘We have got a very good team. A lot of players injured and some going in and out, that didn’t help us. I think we will be a dangerous side in the World Cup,” Shakib added.

That brings us to the end of our coverage of the final Super Four match of the 2023 Asia Cup. Pakistan and Bangladesh have bowed out of the tournament.

It boils down to the final now, with India and Sri Lanka locking horns in yet another summit clash. ‘Hosts’ Sri Lanka will be setting their sights on back-to-back titles to go level with Indian in terms of trophy count. Despite the defeat, Team India remain favourites for an eighth title.

For now this is Amit signing off, wishing you all a happy weekend ahead. See you all on Sunday!

A happy end to what was otherwise a disappointing campaign for Bangladesh in the 16th Asia Cup, where their hopes of reaching the final were dashed following back-to-back Super Four defeats against Pakistan and Sri Lanka. India, meanwhile, have got a wake-up call of sorts ahead of the crucial final and now have an idea about batting under lights in Colombo. Today’s match was also an important assessment of how some of the reserve players in the squad are shaping up ahead of the World Cup, and by the looks of it, not many impressed. Especially Suryakumar Yadav, whose chances of getting a middle-overs slot remain dim after his 34-ball 26.

Rohit Sharma and Co will hope to learn from their mistakes today and come out stronger in the final on Sunday.

OUT! That might just be it as far as India's hopes are concerned! Like Gill earlier today, Axar holes out to the fielder at long on while attempting to smash the ball down the ground. While it was a change in line that foxed Gill earlier, this time it's a cutter from 'Fizz' that brings about his downfall. Prasidh Krishna joins Shami at the crease with Bangladesh one wicket away from victory! Outstanding over from Mustafizur, conceding just five runs for two crucial wickets!

OUT! Fizz strikes at the start of what could be a match-defining penultimate over! Thakur looks to flick a low full toss through the square leg region, only for Miraz to pull off a fine catch diving to his left at square leg. Bangladesh two wickets away from victory. After 48 overs,India 249/7 ( Axar Patel 38 , Shardul Thakur 11)

Mustafizur returns for the business end of the game, and concedes seven in his seventh over. Both Axar and Thakur are looking for the big hits but are unable to get the boundaries. Thakur pulls the ball towards wide long on in the final delivery, only for Miraz to save a couple of runs for the Tigers with an agile slide. Mahedi continues from the other end and continues to build pressure on the Men in Blue, conceding a single off each of the first four deliveries. Axar though, greatly shortens the equation for the Men in Blue with a four and a six off the last two deliveries, leaving India 17 to win off 12.

SIX! And just like that, Axar brings India back in the contest! Mahedi bowls this into the slot, and Axar presents the straight face of the bat to loft this over long on, comfortably clearing the long on fielder. IND 249/7; need 17 off 12

Mahedi vs Axar in the 46th over in what a crucial match-up — the off-spinner against set left-hander. Thakur goes for a wild heave in the third delivery and gets a thick top-edge, with the ball landing between three fielders at backward square leg. Axar and Thakur are content rotating the strike through singles in this over, with six runs coming off it. The Men in Blue need 38 off 24.

FOUR! Muscled towards the cow corner fence off a full toss from Nasum, with the fielder running to his left from long on unable to get to the ball in time. 12 off Nasum's final over as the left-arm spinner signs off wicketless for 50 runs. He nearly had a wicket in the over though, with Axar missing the ball completely after giving the ball a charge, only for keeper Litton to miss out on a stumping opportunity thanks to a fumble. India need 44 off 30 with three wickets in hand.

22:31 (IST)

India vs Bangladesh LIVE

SIX! Axar gets on the backfoot and pulls a half-tracker from Nasum over deep midwicket! The sound off the bat suggested it had come off the meat of the bat, and there was little a fielder could have done in this situation even if placed at the edge of the boundary rope. IND 217/7

Bangladesh certainly will be smelling victory after Mahedi’s dismissal of Gill. Both Axar and Thakur can bat though, and could cause the Tigers a problem or two in the business end of the chase. Axar, especially, has been around for a while now, and will look to assume charge from here.

Expensive over from Tanzim for a change with 12 coming off it. Five off the following over by Mustafizur including a wide, with India reaching 188/6 at the end of the second powerplay.

Shakib had conceded just three singles in the over before this one, and has one over left in his quota.

India need a couple of big overs to keep the rising required rate under check. More importantly, Shubman Gill has to stick around till the end.

BOWLED! Shakib's insistence on bowling an extended spell pays off as Shakib gets rid of Surya! SKY decided to go for another sweep, but missed the ball completely on this occasion, resulting in the ball clipping the top of off. The Bangladesh skipper breaks the fifth-wicket stand that was starting to look worrisome for the Tigers. Drinks brought to the field at the end of the over. IND 139/5

India vs Bangladesh LIVE

After 32 overs,India 137/4 ( Shubman Gill 73 , Suryakumar Yadav 25)

FOUR! Two boundaries in as many overs for Surya! He goes for a late cut off a slightly short delivery from Shakib outside off. Places it wide of backward point, and the quick outfield does the rest. SKY gets a thick top-edge while attempting a sweep in the final delivery, with the ball landing in the square leg region. What’s more, a misjudgement by Mahedi in the deep results in SKY getting enough time to come back for a second. The ball began to change course in the last second, moving away from the fielder due to the spin imparted on it by Surya’s shot.

Nasum returns to the attack in the following over and Gill nearly perishes in the third delivery, nearly getting caught near cover while attempting an inside-out lofted drive. Four off the over, with the current partnership worth 43 at the end of the 32nd over.

Three singles conceded by Mehidy in his third over. Shakib, meanwhile, appeals several times in his fifth over, including for a catch off his own bowling against SKY in the second delivery that umpires decide to refer upstairs. Replays confirm the ball had bounced off the pitch after a punch by SKY before nestling between Shakib’s palms. Couple of LBW shouts as well, but Bangladesh have no review left for them to contest the on-field umpire’s decision. Four off Shakib’s fifth over.

Shakib later burns Bangladesh's only remaining review after an unsuccesssful LBW appeal against SKY, with the Impact found to be outside off.

Big appeal for LBW against Rahul by Tanzim in his fourth over, and skipper Shakib opts to review after the umpire turns it down. The ball hit Rahul above the knee roll on the back pad and HawkEye shows the ball to be going over the stumps. Review lost by the Tigers. Three runs conceded by Tanzim in his fourth over, including a wide.

After 6 overs,India 24/2 ( Shubman Gill 10 , KL Rahul (W) 5

Tidy first over from left-arm finger spinner Nasum Ahmed, who replaces Mustafizur Rahman in the attack. Just one off the over, with Rahul collecting a single in the third delivery. Has been quite the nervy start for the Indians so far and both Gill and Rahul will hope to see off the initial burst, especially Tanzim's spell, before shifting gears.

Superb over from Tanzim. Might have had three wickets in three overs already. Completely squares Gill up with an outswinger that pitches along good length and nearly kisses the outside edge. Gill has no option but to tread cautiously in the remainder of the over with the debutant already making quite the impression in international cricket. Just one off the over, coming off a wide in the second delivery.

FOUR! Slightly short from Mustafizur and wide of off, Rahul pounces on the opportunity to cut the ball firmly behind point, guiding it towards the unguarded boundary. The keeper-batter gets off the mark in style.

India vs Bangladesh LIVE Score and Updates, Asia Cup 2023 Super Four: Rohit Sharm-led Men in Blue bring an end to their Asia Cup 2023 Super Four campaign with a game against neighbours Bangladesh at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Friday. India have already qualified for the final Sunday and are set to face Sri Lanka who progressed to the summit clash with a victory against Pakistan on the last ball Thursday.

While the game against Bangladesh is a dead runner, it is not expected to lack any intensity as India would want to continue the winning momentum ahead of the final while Bangladesh would look to test themselves against a team that is considered one of the favourites for the upcoming World Cup.

But despite having one eye on the victory, India are expected to make a few changes to manage workload issues and allow squad players to have a crack in the Asia Cup. Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah could be rested, while who would play between Axar Patel and Shardul Thakur would depend on the conditions.

All the yes however from Idnia’s perspective will be on Shreyas Iyer. While he is a first-choice player, he missed the last two games after suffering back spasms and if he is fit, there’s a good chance he would come back into the team instead of Ishan Kishan or KL Rahul. Iyer had a long nets session Thursday and looked ready for the game.

In case he is not fit, India could play Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma. Whoever they pick would also be an indicator of the batter who could replace Iyer in case the Mumbai cricketer fails to get fit in time for the World Cup.

In such a race, Varma could pip SKY as he has the ability to bowl off-spin.
