Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan admitted that his team did not bat well after their defeat to Sri Lanka in their first match of the 2023 Asia Cup in Pallekele on Thursday.

Having opted to bat first, Najmul Hossain Shanto’s knock of 89 was the only silver lining for Bangladesh, as they collapsed to 164 in 42.4 overs.

Matheesha Pathirana finished with four wickets.

“It wasn’t a 300 wicket. 220-230 would’ve given us more chance. Didn’t bat well as a unit. Have to regroup, have another important game in a couple of days. Needed couple more wickets when they were 3 down for 30,” Shakib said at the post-match presentation.

“We picked up wickets but didn’t have enough on the board. There were a lot of nerves when we started the game. Lot of guys playing Asia Cup for first time. They’ve been playing good cricket that’s why they’re in dressing room,” he added.

Sri Lanka, too, lost wickets at regular intervals, but a vital 78-run stand for the fourth wicket between half-centurions Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka brought them back in the game. The hosts won the match with five wickets and 11 overs to spare.

Dasun Shanaka, Sri Lanka skipper, said it was a tricky surface to bat on, but hailed the duo for handling the situation well.

“The way bowlers executed, credit to them. Especially Theekshana up front, Dhananjaya, and Pathirana who’s bowling so well. Tricky surface. The way Sadeera batted, today was his day. Asalanka has been outstanding over last 2 years. Good signs for Sri Lankan cricket,” said Shanaka.

Pathirana felt that his “unpredictable” action was an advantage.

“This is my first POTM for my country – really happy about that. T20 skills are good for death overs. That’s why I took my wickets with the slower balls. My action is unpredictable. It’s a good advantage for me,” said the Player of the Match.

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has predicted India and Pakistan to face off in the final of the 2023 Asia Cup.

India and Pakistan could face thrice during the Asia Cup that is being hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka in a hybrid format. The two arch-rivals face off in the group stage in Pallekele on 2 September, and should both the teams go through to the Super Fours, they could lock horns again on 10 September in Colombo. The final is slated for 17 September in Colombo.

Pakistan earlier opened their campaign on Wednesday with a 238-run win over Nepal.

“I have been touted as Mahabharat’s Sanjay, so with my foresight, I can confidently say that India and Pakistan are going to be in focus. They are going to face off thrice in Asia Cup this year, so basis my calculations, I see the finals also being played by India and Pakistan. This is my prediction,” Sanjay Manjrekar told Star Sports.

The Asia Cup is being co-hosted by Sri Lanka and Pakistan and it features a total of six teams – India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Nepal – battling it out for the winning spot. The Group Stage of the tournament will be played till 5th September. The Super Four stage will be played from 6th September to 15th September, while the finale is scheduled for 17 September.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam on Wednesday said that his team’s 238-run win over Nepal in the opening game of Asia Cup in Multan gave them confidence ahead of their marquee clash against India on 2 September.

Babar Azam and Iftikhar Ahmed slammed centuries to guide Pakistan to 342/6 from 50 overs, and in reply, all Nepal could put on the board was a total of 104. Shadab Khan ran riot with the ball to end with figures of 4/27.

Azam scored 151 while Iftikhar remained unbeaten on 109.

“When I went in, the ball wasn’t coming on properly, so I was trying to build an innings with Rizwan. Then we had a different phase, sometimes Rizwan gave me confidence, sometimes I gave him belief. Iftikhar also played a great innings when he came on,” said Babar at the post-match presentation. The Pakistan captain also went onto win the Player of the Match award.

“When he came in, I told him to play his natural game and he was comfortable after 2-3 boundaries. A couple of overs we weren’t up to the mark, but the way our pacers started and then the spinners were brilliant,” he added.

Babar said that Pakistan would try their best to beat India in Pallekele on Saturday.

“This win will give us the confidence, India Pakistan will always bring high intensity, we will try our best.”

Rohit Paudel, Nepal skipper, said that Babar and Iftikhar took away the game from them.

“ We started well with the ball, but both set batters took the game away from us. We have batted better before and we missed out today. Wicket taking balls were not there in middle overs, but credit to Babar for the way he batted, credit to Pakistan,” he said.

Shadab Khan said Iftikhar showcased his power-hitting ability.

“It was hot out there, but Sri Lanka was hot as well but Sri Lanka was more humid. I can’t talk about Babar because we all know he is a world class player, Iftikhar has done so much for much whenever he gets the opportunity. He showcased his power hitting really well today,” said Shadab.

Nepal will next take on India in Pallekele on Monday (4 September).

Multan: Nepal skipper Rohit Paudel has asserted that his team is capable of being competitive against hosts Pakistan and India in the 2023 Asia Cup, starting Wednesday.

The Nepal team is all set to make their Asia Cup debut, having been clubbed in Group A alongside the hosts and India.

“We are playing for the first time, and it’s a big achievement for all of us. Pakistan is a very good side, and we want to give a competitive game to them, as well as India. So, we deserve to be here,” cited Paudel during the pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

When asked about the biggest difference between his side and the Pakistanis, he said that barring experience, there is not much difference between the two sides.

“The difference would be the experience. If you count on skills, both batting and bowling are the same (for both sides). But, if you count on experience, Pakistan is an experienced side.”

“Both the teams have world-class bowlers and batsmen. Our focus is to win one ball (at a time), regardless of who the opponent is,” added Paudel.

The Rhinos are coming off straight competitive outings, having participated in the ICC World Cup Qualifiers, where it finished eighth, followed by the ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup, failing to progress beyond the group stage.

Paudel credited the two tournaments as good preparation platforms for the Asia Cup, besides admitting that the expectations are high from them.

“We had some good preparations. We played in Zimbabwe (ICC World Cup Qualifiers) and the Emerging Asia Cup. So, we are well-prepared.”

“There have been a lot of expectations from us. All Neaplese have been dreaming for this Asia Cup.”

“We have been playing for more than two decades, and it’s a great opportunity to represent our country at the highest level, especially in Asia Cup. So, it’s a big occasion for all of us,” he concluded.

Pakistan vs Afghanistan 3rd ODI preview: Pakistan will be eyeing a clean sweep when they face Afghanistan in the third and final ODI in Colombo on Saturday.

Pakistan won the toss, and opted to bat in what is effectively a dead rubber, but a crucial game for both teams in getting their combination right ahead of the Asia Cup that starts four days from now.

Babar Azam’s men clinched the three-match series with a nervy one-wicket victory on Friday after being set a challenging 301 to win. In what was a near-repeat of their thrilling Asia Cup encounter in Sharjah last year, it was tail-ender Naseem Shah who held his nerve in a tight situation yet again to guide his team over the line, and he once again ended up hitting the winning runs off left-arm pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi.

In the Asia Cup encounter last year, Shah managed to finish things off in style with two consecutive sixes in the final over of their chase of 130. This time around, there was even more drama in store with Farooqi running Shadab Khan out at the non-striker’s end at the start of the final over before Shah finished the job with two fours, the second of which was the winning shot in the penultimate ball of the match.

Earlier, Rahmanullah Gurbaz had struck a majestic 151 and forged a 227-run opening partnership — Afghanistan’s highest opening stand in ODIs — with Ibrahim Zadran (80). Though the Afghans lost wickets in a cluster after the pair was dismissed, their contributions ensured they ended up going past 300 in the end.

Pakistan also got their chase off to a strong start thanks to contributions from Imam-ul-Haq (91), who narrowly missed out on his hundred, and skipper Babar Azam (53). Later Shadab Khan came to their rescue after they lost five wickets for just 41 runs to get reduced to 211/6, collecting three fours and a six in his 35-ball 48 to bring Pakistan back in the chase and take the game to the very final over before Shah’s epic finish.

Teams:

Afghanistan: Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Ibrahim Zadran, Hashmatullah Shahidi (c), Gulbadin Naib, Riaz Hassan, Shahidullah, Mohammad Nabi, Fareed Ahmad, Rashid Khan, Mujeeb-Ur-Rahman, Fazalhaq Farooqi

Pakistan: Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Babar Azam (c), Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Saud Shakeel, Agha Salman, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Faheem Ashraf, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mohammad Wasim

Jasprit Bumrah’s tenure as India captain got off to a winning start as India blanked Ireland 2-0 with the third T20I washed out on wednesday. The series was important was equally important for the seamer who returned to action after 11 months. He had undergone surgery six months ago to treat a back injury.

“Very happy to be back and play some cricket. Frustrating when you’re waiting for a game to happen. Did not see this coming, weather was fine in the morning. An honour to lead the side, everyone was very eager and enthusiastic. Whenever you get an opportunity to lead your side, anyone would love to do that.

“As a cricketer, you always want responsibility. All good, no complaints (on fitness front). It is makes my job easier when players are so confident, and they tell me what to do,” said Bumrah at the post-match presentation.

Ireland, who have qualified for the T20 World Cup next year, had this series as perfect opportunity to test themselves against a tough team. They ran India close in the rain-curtailed first T20I but were well short in the second.

“Just periods of good cricket from us in patches. Lot of positives, but it’s about finishing those games off. Hopefully we’ll take these learnings,” said Ireland skipper Paul Stirling.

“Brilliant to have India over and play in front of good crowds here. We would have been happier if we could have got some fresh faces out there tonight. It’s a buildup now for the next sort of 10 months,” he said.

Heath Streak has passed away at the age of 49. The former Zimbabwe captain and seamer was battling with cancer.

Streak, one of Zimbabwe’s greatest cricketers and captain between 2000 and 2004, played 65 Test matches and 189 ODIs. He remains the only player from his country to take 100 Test wickets. He often carried the bowling effort singlehandedly for Zimbabwe during a 12-year cricketing career.

Mainly known for his bowling contribution, Streak was handy with the bat in Zimbabwe’s middle order. He tallied 1990 Test runs and 2943 ODI runs through his career. He scored a Test century (127*) against the West Indies in Harare – it was his first and only ton in the longest format.

After making a debut against Pakistan in 1993, Streak almost immediately made his contribution tell with eight wickets in the second Test in Rawalpindi.

The all-rounder retired in 2005 to lead Warwickshire in the English county but his tenure was cut short due to personal form issues.

He then went on to play the now defunct Indian Cricket League (ICL) in 2007, effectively bringing his career to a close.

Streak’s coaching career saw him take roles with Zimbabwe, Scotland, Bangladesh, Gujarat Lions and Kolkata Knight Riders.

However, his legacy was affected when he was banned for eight years by the ICC for anti-corruption breaches. The punishment was handed down in 2021 and covered his stint as coach of Zimbabwe, KKR in the IPL and Kabul Zwanan in Afghanistan Premier League.

Henry Olonga, Streak’s teammate and bowling partner at one point, took to social media to pay his tribute. “Sad news coming through that Heath Streak has crossed to the other side,” wrote Olonga on X, formerly Twitter. “RIP legend. The greatest all rounder we produced. It was a pleasure playing with you. See you on the other side when my bowling spell comes to an end.”

Jasprit Bumrah applauded the young Indian cricket team squad for not carrying the weight of expectations on them. The seamer believes the added pressure could only be a hindrance towards doing their best for the country.

Bumrah and a young Indian team beat Ireland by 33 runs in the second T20I and took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. It is his first series victory as a captain.

“It is very pleasing. It is tough to pick an XI. It’s a great headache to have. Everyone is eager. Everyone is confident. All of us wanted to play for India,” Bumrah said at the presentation ceremony.

“Eventually, everyone has to work their way up. If you play with a baggage of expectation, you are under pressure. You have to keep those expectations aside. You are not doing yourself 100 percent justice if you are playing with so many expectations,” he added.

Player of the Match Rinku Singh, who scored a 21-ball-38 was pleased to make years of hard work count on the big stage.

“I am feeling very good. I was trying to do what I have done in the IPL. I was very confident and tried to stay calm,” he said.

During the ceremony when Bumrah and the post-match ceremony translator jokingly asked him: “Captain ki baat sunta hai (Do you listen to your captain?), Rinku smiled and said, “I listen to the captain. I am feeling very nice. I have been playing for 10 years. All my efforts have borne fruition. I am happy to get the Man of the Match award in my first game,” he said.

Jasprit Bumrah was the prime focus in the first T20I against Ireland on Friday. The seamer returned to action after 11 months, six months after surgery, and took two wickets in an over for a sensational start. Now that’s out of the way, the focus can return on the Indian batting with a larger aim of sealing the series.

The first T20I was interrupted by rain and gloomy conditions didn’t allow the Indian batting to get a proper outing. Weather is expected to be better for the second T20I and the middle order would be keen on proving itself.

Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal played 39 of the 41 balls India batted in the first T20I before rain arrived. In the second T20I, the likes of Gaikwad, Rinku Singh, Shivam Dube and Sanju Samson will be keen on making an impact. The larger picture, for the entire squad, is the T20 World Cup next year.

For wicketkeeper-batter Samson, his experience stands tall in the absence of Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and Hardik Pandya. Additionally, there is a short term goal for him with the Asia Cup squad to be announced on Monday.

With conditions playing a vital role, toss can be crucial – as Ravi Bishnoi said in the post-match press conference – and India would hope to come out on top once again.

Ireland will hope to do better than the first T20I where they lost two wickets in the opening over and were 59/6 at one stage. Barry McCarthy’s fifty salvaged some pride for Ireland and took them to 139/7.

The hosts will aim to do better with the top order against a quality Indian bowling if they want to level the series. Andrew Balbirnie, Paul Stirling and Lorcan Tucker will have to step up to give India a run for their money.

After going 1-0 up with a narrow win in a rain-truncated game on Friday, India will be aiming to clinch the three-match series against Ireland with a match to spare when the two sides lock horns in Malahide on Sunday.

In a game that witnessed the debuts of Prasidh Krishna and Rinku Singh, senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah made a superb comeback after a year-long absence, striking twice in the very first over of the innings after opting to field and finishing with figures of 2/24.

Bumrah’s early strikes helped India seize control early, and had Ireland on the mat at 59/6 at one stage before valuable contributions from Barry McCarthy (51 not out) and Curtis Campher (39) helped the hosts bounce back in the second half and post a respectable 139/7 on the board.

Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad, in reply, managed to get India off to a positive start, preserving their wickets till the end of the powerplay. Despite Craig Young striking twice in his first over, removing Jaiswal (24) and Tilak Varma (0) in successive deliveries before rain made its way to the Malahide Cricket Club Ground near Dublin.

As no further play was possible due to incessant rain, India were declared winners as they were two runs ahead of the par score.

Will it rain again on Sunday though? Or are we going to have a full 20-overs-a-side contest? Here’s the weather forecast for Malahide for the match day:

Cricket fans are in for some good news with Sunday’s forecast for Malahide reading “Mostly sunny and beautiful”, according to Accuweather. With a 25 per cent probability of rain and a 21 per cent cloud cover, the likelihood of the two teams battling it out under clear skies appear quite likely.

Only fitting for both teams as well as for Cricket Ireland given the strong turnout that they had witnessed in the series opener, with a healthy smattering of blue jerseys and the Indian tricolour in the stands at The Village.

Jasprit Bumrah made a winning return to international cricket as India narrowly edged Ireland by 2 runs (DLS method) to win the first T20I in Dublin on Friday. The win gave India a 1-0 lead in three-match series.

Most importantly, though, Bumrah, making his first appearance in 11 months, picked up two wickets – both in the very first over – and took home the Player of the Match honours.

Bumrah got things underway against Ireland by conceding a boundary. The low floater was easily cracked towards square-leg by former Ireland captain Andrew Balbirnie.

But Bumrah roared back and got the better of Balbirnie with an in-swinger which beat the bat, missed the pad and went on to clatter into the stumps. Balbirnie looked to drive the delivery which landed outside off but was left surprised by the inward movement.

Lorcan Tucker came in at No 3 for Ireland. He started slowly by playing two deliveries for dots. Bumrah almost struck with an in-swinging yorker on the third delivery but for the Irish player to play it out to safety.

Tucker tried to play an elaborate shot to get out of the pressure situation but ended up gifting away his wicket. On a full delivery by Bumrah, Tucker attempted a scoop but mistimed it and made it an easy catch for wicketkeeper Sanju Samson.

Elsewhere in the first T20I, Prasidh Krishna, also returning from a lengthy injury layoff, and Ravi Bishnoi took two wickets each to restrict Ireland to 139/7. For the hosts, Barry McCarthy provided the fight with a half century after Ireland were reduced to 59/6 at one stage.

In reply, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad’s attacking start saw India narrowly breach the DLS mark to win. India were 47/2 when the umpires decided to halt play because of rain. It became the last action of the day with the second T20I to be played at the same venue on Sunday.

‘Didn’t feel I missed out a lot’

Bumrah made his captaincy debut against Ireland in the contest. He became the first Indian captain to win the Player of the Match on T20I debut. But his focus remained on the bowling and being there for his teammates.

“Felt very good, so many sessions I did at the NCA, didn’t feel I missed out a lot or was doing something new. Credit to the staff, they kept me in good spirits,” said Bumrah when asked about his comeback during the post-match presentation ceremony.

He added, “You are not thinking about yourself, you are thinking about others out there. Not really nervous but very happy. There was some swing upfront so we wanted to use it. Luckily we won the toss and it was coming out fine. There was some help due to the weather, so very happy.”

Bumrah thanked the sell-out crowd that remained despite the persisent showers.

“Everybody is very confident, they are very well prepared. I think the IPL also helps. It is always good, wherever we go, they (crowd) support us, that helps us to keep the spirit high,” concluded India’s first bowler T20I captain.

Pacer Jasprit Bumrah made an emphatic return to action after a year-long absence as India defeated Ireland by two runs (DLS Method) in a rain-affected 1st T20I in Malahide on Friday.

Bumrah, who is leading a second-string Indian team in the three-match T20I series, struck twice in his very first over of the day and would finish with tidy figures of 2/24 to help restrict Ireland to 139/7 after opting to field.

India, in reply, got off to a positive start and managed to stay ahead of the par score before the heavens opened up at the Malahide Cricket Club Ground in Dublin, ensuring the Men in Blue took the series lead.

Leading the side on his return after an 11-month injury layoff, Bumrah claimed 2 for 24 with nine dot balls and formed a formidable pair with T20I debutant Prasidh Krishna (2/32) as the duo ran through the Irish top order.

Things looked bleak for the hosts after they were down 59 for 6 in the 11th over but their No 8 Barry McCarthy produced an amazing recovery, blazing his way to a 33-ball 51 not out (4×4, 4×6) to lift their total to a respectable 139 for 7.

He stitched a seventh wicket 57-run partnership with Curtis Campher (39) as Ireland reeled off 53 runs in the last five overs, losing just one wicket.

McCarthy was the stand out batter for the hosts as he reached his maiden half-century with a last-ball six off Arshdeep Singh, who leaked 22 runs in the last over with McCarthy going hammer-and-tongs with two sixes and a four.

Chasing the tricky target under overcast conditions, India were off to a fluent start with Yashasvi Jaiswal (24; 23b) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (19 not out) putting together 46 runs in 6.2 overs.

But Craig Young produced a double blow, taking the left-handed duo of Jaiswal and Tilak Varma who was out for a golden duck.

India vice-captain Gaikwad, however, showed maturity and watched through the tricky phased, well aware that they were ahead of the DLS par score.

There was no stopping rain as umpires decided to call off the game at 6.15pm local time with India taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

The victory also saw India return to winning ways after they went down 2-3 in the T20I series in the West Indies.

Malahide will be hosting all three matches in the series with the second game scheduled for Sunday.

All eyes on Bumrah, the Indian pace sensation did not disappoint.

He bowled with rhythm, accuracy and a lot of venom. His rhythm was a lot better, he ran fast in his run-up to generate momentum and slowly ramped up the speed gun and went on to clock 140kph in the penultimate over when he conceded just one run.

He leaked 13 runs in just one of his four overs — 16th.

Bumrah bowled up front only to see Irish opener Andy Balbirnie nudging his fuller delivery for a boundary behind square boundary.

Bumrah was quick to bounce back and knocked over Balbirnie’s off-stump with a searing inswinger.

He grabbed in-form wicketkepper-batter Lorcan Tucker in his fifth delivery to get his campaign up and running.

After four overs, Prasidh, who made his T20I debut, was handed the ball and he ended the struggle of Harry Tector (9) with the batter giving a simple catch to Varma while looking for a ramp shot.

The wily Bishnoi then bamboozled skipper Paul Stirling (11) with a googly as Ireland slumped to 27 for 4 in the powerplay.

The hosts continued to pay the price for poor execution as Prasidh had George Dockrell (3) caught by Ruturaj Gaikwad at cover with a back-of-a-length delivery.

Campher hit a welcome boundary with a reverse sweep, while Mark Adair (16) picked up two fours to take Ireland to 50 for 5 in 9 overs.

However, Bishnoi came back to remove Adair after winning a video referral for an LBW decision. The batter danced down the track and looked to play a slog shot only to be hit on the pads by a ball turning in from outside.

McCarthy brought up Ireland’s first maximum when he deposited Bishnoi over long on in the 13th over.

Campher ramped one over short fine, while McCarthy clubbed one across the mid-wicket boundary as the two kept Ireland ticking.

When Bumrah returned, Campher sent a low full toss across extra cover before smoking the India pacer for a maximum.

Prasidh was next in line as McCarthy slammed him across the point region before depositing the next on over long-on. He ended the over with another four as 15 runs came of it.

That brings us to the end of our coverage of Match 1 of India's tour of Ireland, with the highlight of the day being Jasprit Bumrah's sensational comeback after an year-long absence, removing Andy Balbirnie and Lorcan Tucker in his very first over!

There were some areas of concern for the Indians today, especially pacers Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna leaking runs aplenty in the second half of the Irish innings (with the hosts collecting 53 runs in the last five overs). Arshdeep went for 22 runs in the final over of the innings, and will hope to come out stronger when the two sides lock horns at the same venue two days later.

Additionally, the solid knocks from Barry McCarthy (51 not out) and Curtis Campher (39) as well as Craig Young's two wickets in as many deliveries will have given the home team the belief that they can take the three-match series to a decider when they face Bumrah and Co on Sunday.

Do join us on the day after tomorrow for our coverage of the second T20I. For now, this is Amit signing off, bidding you all a good night!

Dramatic first over from Joshua Little, who earlier this year represented the Gujarat Titans to become the first Irishman to play in the Indian Premier League. Huge mix-up between Jaiswal and Gaikwad in the third delivery with both batters stranded at the non-striker's end. And yet the hosts manage to fluff the golden opportunity to get an early breakthrough — not once, but twice! Later in this over, Ireland decide to use a review after an unsuccessful caugh-behind appeal against Jaiswal, and end up wasting it after replays show daylight between bat and ball. However nondescript India's tour of Ireland may be, it could end up having a say in shaping Indian cricket down the road. India, after all, will be travelling with the players who are seen as hopefuls for next year’s T20 World Cup that takes place in the Caribbean and the United States.

Much like the recent T20I series against the West Indies, the upcoming three-match T20I series against Ireland could very well be an audition of sorts.

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the first T20I between India and Ireland at The Village in Malahide near the Irish capital of Dublin on Friday. The game that marks pace spearhead and stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah's return to international cricket faces the possibility of a washout.

India vs Ireland, 1st T20I in Dublin Preview: Jasprit Bumrah will be making his long-awaited return to action after a year-long absence in the first of three T20Is between India and Ireland in Dublin on Friday.

Bumrah will not only be bowling again in international cricket for the first time since the home series against Australia last September, he has also been named captain of a second-string Indian squad that is missing a number of first-team players, including regular skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Bumrah, who had missed key events such as last year’s Asia Cup and T20 World Cup as well as the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Indian Premier League and the World Test Championship final this year, will be hoping to get his old rhythm back ahead of the Asia Cup and the ICC World Cup.

Ireland too will be considering the India series the starting point for next year’s T20 World Cup that will be jointly hosted by the West Indies and the USA. Ireland qualified for the mega event after finishing in the top two alongside Scotland in the European Qualifier.

Bumrah’s return to action, as well as debuts of promising youngsters including Rinku Singh and Jitesh Sharma, could be delayed with rain likely to make an appearance on Friday and hold up play at the Malahide Cricket Club Ground.

Squads:

India: Jasprit Bumrah (c), Ruturaj Gaikwad (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Sanju Samson (wk), Jitesh Sharma (wk), Shivam Dube, W Sundar, Shahbaz Ahmed, Ravi Bishnoi, Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh, Mukesh Kumar, Avesh Khan.

Ireland: Paul Stirling (captain), Andrew Balbirnie, Mark Adair, Ross Adair, Curtis Campher, Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Fionn Hand, Josh Little, Barry McCarthy, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker, Theo van Woerkom, Ben White, Craig Young.

Toss report: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) won the toss and opted to bowl in the first of three T20Is against New Zealand in Dubai on Thursday.

The T20I series, which witnesses all-rounder Kyle Jamieson return to action after sitting out for more than a year due to a back stress fracture, marks the beginning of New Zealand’s long stay in the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent.

The T20I series against the UAE will be followed by a trip to Bangladesh, where the Black Caps are scheduled to play a three-match ODI series before beginning their World Cup campaign against defending champions England in a rematch of the 2019 final.

The UAE T20Is as well as the Bangladesh ODIs will be crucial from the Kiwis’ perspective as they aim to try out new players and get their World Cup combination right.

The Black Caps, who finished runners-up in the last two editions of the World Cup, are yet to win ICC’s showpiece event. As for World Cups hosted in Asia, New Zealand suffered a group stage exit in 1987, reached the quarter-finals in 1996 and the semi-finals in 2011.

Teams:

New Zealand: Tim Seifert, Chad Bowes, Dane Cleaver (wk), Mark Chapman, Mitchell Santner, James Neesham, Rachin Ravindra, Cole McConchie, Kyle Jamieson, Tim Southee (c), Ben Lister

United Arab Emirates: Muhammad Waseem (c), Aryansh Sharma (wk), Vriitya Aravind, Asif Khan, Ansh Tandon, Basil Hameed, Ali Naseer, Aayan Afzal Khan, Mohammed Faraazuddin, Junaid Siddique, Zahoor Khan

Indian cricket team’s dominance on the tour of West Indies fizzled in the T20I format to cap off the series. After winning the Test series 1-0, the ODIs 2-1, West Indies came back to clinch the shortest format 3-2 in dramatic fashion.

With a year to go to the T20 World Cup, India went down 0-2 in the five-match T20I series. The Men in Blue roared back to level the series but were swept aside in the decider. West Indies beat India by 8 wickets, with 12 balls left, to win the fifth T20I in Lauderhill, Florida, to clinch the series.

The inconsistent and largely below-par showing from India has prompted many to question the state of affairs in the team.

Individually, many of the rookies Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan and Mukesh Kumar clicked but collectively the team didn’t work. Former India legend Sunil Gavaskar made an intriguing boys vs men analogy to compare the two sides.

“A player could do well at the franchise level, but when it comes to playing for the country, it’s a different ball game of pressures and expectations. It is one step up, which can be too steep for even some of the best performers at the franchise level. How often have we seen this when the Under-19 performers just aren’t able to take that one step up from a boys’ tournament to a men’s competition?,” he wrote in his Sportstar column.

“Yes, the kids look great playing against kids, but when they come up against the men, they suddenly find that what looks like a piece of cake at the under-19 level is more like mud at the senior level. That’s why so many who looked good at the boys’ level have been found wanting at the senior level. It’s not just the temperament; even the skill set is way below the standard required at the franchise level. Then, having been bought for crores, some of these youngsters lose the fire in the belly and are happy to cruise along in later years and get their contracts extended, even if it is for a lesser amount,” he further penned.

However, Gavaskar reminded everyone of West Indies’ credentials, especially in the shortest format, and there was ‘no shame in losing to them.’

“The loss to West Indies should not be a dampener. Don’t forget that they have won the ICC T20 World Cup twice, and their players are matchwinners for the different franchises they play for in the IPL. So, they are a top-class T20 team, and there’s no shame in losing to them. It should be a wake-up call, though, to see the areas where India needs to improve to strengthen its side. Some of those who were rested for this series may not be around for too long, so their replacements need to be found pretty quickly too, as the next ICC T20 World Cup is just a year away,” he explained.

‘Plenty of positives’

India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin opted to look at the positives despite the defeat and went after those who criticised the team.

“There are plenty of positives from this T20I series. It is very easy to criticise the team on social media since they lost to a team that didn’t qualify for the last T20 World Cup. They haven’t qualified for the upcoming 50-over World Cup as well. I want to give a piece of information to you guys,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Ashwin argued that this would have been a learning curve for many youngsters in the squad.

“I am not talking, backing, or supporting anybody. All of these are secondary. As a youngster, if you are going to the West Indies, there will be some challenges. In all countries, there will be some innate secrets. The local players know these things more than visiting players.

Especially if the players are young. When I went to West Indies, England, Australia, I had to learn various little things…these are first-time experiences for me as a cricketer. So, youngsters would have learned a lot from this tour. They will definitely get better from here.

Losing the series 2-3 to West Indies…many of them are criticising and upset. It’s okay and understandable. It’s only fair, I guess. But we can see this loss from two perspectives. The players will get experience from this series,” he added.

Team India Tuesday took off for a T201 series in Ireland.

The three-match series will see the return of the mainstay of Indian pace attack, Jasprit Bumrah after a year-long break due to a back injury. He will also lead the men-in-blue for the outing.

The series gets underway on 18 August at Malahide, Dublin, followed by remaining matches on 20 and 23 August at the same venue.

The Board of Cricket Control in India shared pictures of the teams’ departure.

Bumrah pulled last September with a reported stress reaction in his lower back. This made him miss the 2022 T20 World Cup. He was then selected for an ODI series against Sri Lanka in January this year but again pulled out due to back pain. He also missed the four-match Test series at home against Australia, the 2023 IPL, and the WTC final. His return was long awaited as reports of his recovery started surfacing a couple of months ago.

The team just comes out of a T20I series loss in West Indies, drawing a lot of questions on their preparedness, especially as the T20 World Cup is just 10 months away and the majority of the squad for the tournament will be drawn from the same stock.

Just like in West Indies, India have called up several youngsters like Rinku Singh and Jitesh Sharma for the Ireland tour.

India squad:

Jasprit Bumrah (Captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Washington Sundar, Shivam Dube, Shahbaz Ahmed, Sanju Samson, Jitesh Sharma, Ravi Bishnoi, Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh, Mukesh Kumar, Avesh Khan.

England all-rounder Ben Stokes could come out of retirement from ODI cricket to participate in the upcoming 50-over World Cup in India, a report in The Telegraph said.

Stokes had announced his retirement from ODIs in July 2022, but the report goes to onto say that Stokes was ready to play the World Cup if he was asked by skipper Jos Buttler. It could also mean sacrificing his IPL contract with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who acquired him for a whopping Rs 16.25 crore ahead of the 2023 season.

Also read: England want Ben Stokes to return to ODIs for World Cup 2023

This is also while taking England’s Test series against India that starts in January.

“Ben Stokes is prepared to make a sensational U-Turn and reverse his one day international retirement to help England’s World Cup defence in India this year, even if it means missing out on next season’s Indian Premier League,” the report said.

“The England Test captain now appears willing to play World Cup if he is asked by white-ball captain Jos Buttler,” the report added.

Stokes is also expected to undergo a knee surgery during the IPL next year that would give him enough time to recover, the report added.

Stokes could also play as a specialist batter in the middle-order if needed.

“Stokes is likely to bat in the middle order for England ODI side. Amid fears of how much bowling he could do, England are prepared to pick him as specialist batsman, replicating the role he performed at stages during this summer’s Ashes series,” said the report.

Stokes last played an ODI for England against South Africa at his home ground in Durham in July 2022.

Stokes played a pivotal role in helping England win the World Cup on home soil in 2019.

That brings us to the end of our coverage of India's tour of the Caribbean and the United States, with the West Indians giving their fans something to smile for after a couple of turbulent months with a emphatic victory in the T20I series decider. India, though, will be pleased with their performances in the Tests and the one-dayers, and the fact that they managed to take the T20I series to a decider from 0-2 down.

Though India tour Ireland next, the focus for the team as well as for its fans will surely be on the Asia Cup that kicks off towards the end of August, with India playing its first match against Pakistan on 2 September in Kandy.

For now, this is Amit signing off, wishing you all a good night!

Arshdeep Singh joins Axar Patel at the centre as the Indian batting goes into the tail now. Axar is more than handy a batter down the order, and will assume charge after Surya's dismissal. Arshdeep, meanwhile, gets off the mark right away with a single off his first delivery. Two more overs left, and India are a long way off from the 180-mark.

OUT! Massive blow to the Men in Blue as Jason Holder traps Suryakumar Yadav LBW in the 18th over! Holder fires a yorker that hits SKY's front pad on the full, and the umpire thinks it's going down leg while shaking his head. Windies skipper Powell decides to review, and sure enough, the hosts get three reds on ball-tracking with the ball shown to be hitting the base of leg. Surya departs after a well-made 61 off 45 deliveries, and his dismissal might just have shaved off 10-15 runs off West Indies' target. IND 140/6

RAIN HALTS PLAY IN LAUDERHILL! Looks like inclement weather decided to make one last appearance in India's tour after preventing them from completing a 2-0 sweep in the Test series and also making appearances in the ODI and T20I series. Umpire Gregory Brathwaite beckons the groundstaff to bring the covers out with one delivery left in the 16th over after the drizzle gets heavier.

Akeal Hosein and Roston Chase bowl out their final overs, signing off with tidy figures of 2/24 and 1/25 respectively. The two finger spinners have played a key role in maintaining a stranglehold on the Indian batters so far today and not allow them to dictate terms the way they did yesterday. Another six overs to go, and skipper Hardik Pandya and his deputy Suryakumar Yadav will back themselves to get the Men in Blue close to the 180-mark from here.
