Day 5 preview: England will be desperately hoping rain doesn’t come in their way of pulling off a series-leveling victory over Australia on Day 5 of the fifth and final Ashes 2023 Test at The Oval, London.

Australia are set to resume from their overnight score of 135/0, with openers Usman Khawaja and David Warner batting on 69 and 58 respectively.

The pair got the visitors off to a strong start after England were bowled out for 395 in their second essay, guiding Australia to 75 for no loss at lunch and then keeping the English attack at bay an hour into the second session before rain made its way to south London and ensured no further play was available for the remainder of Day 4.

A final day washout, which was the case in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, will allow Australia to complete a 2-1 series victory — their first Test series triumph on English soil since their 4-1 victory in the 2001 Ashes.

Monday’s forecast for London, however, appears promising for England with rain expected to delay the start of the morning session on Monday but otherwise steer clear of The Oval for the remainder of the day.

England had the opportunity to level the five-Test series in Manchester, where they managed to seize a massive 275-run first innings lead, and were eyeing an innings victory after reducing Australia to 108/4 at one stage in their second innings.

Incessant rain over the next two days — which allowed only 30 overs of play on Day 4 and absolutely no action on the final day — along with Marnus Labuschagne’s defiant 111 secured a draw for Pat Cummins and Co and ensured the urn stays with them for now.

Former India cricketer Venkatesh Prasad has slammed the Indian team for their below-par show in white ball cricket over the last few years. India and West Indies are level at 1-1 in the ongoing series with a decider on Tuesday to come. In the second ODI, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were rested with the objective of testing the bench strength.

In the second ODI, India produced a below-par performance and were bowled out for just 181 runs. In reply, West Indies got the job done with 6 wickets to spare.

Kapil Dev: ‘Too much money’ has led to arrogance and overconfidence

The ongoing series acts as an opportunity for the Indian team management to get their options – both main and backups – ready for the Asia Cup and ODI World Cup.

Prasad criticised India’s performance in white ball cricket in recent times. He also compared the current squad with the England side and the dominant Australian team of the 2000s.

“Test cricket aside, India has been very ordinary in the other two formats for quite sometime now. Lost odi [ODI] series against ban [Bangladesh], SA [South Africa] and Aus [Australia]. Poor in the last two T20 World Cups. Neither are we an exciting team like England nor brutal like how the Aussies used to be,” Prasad tweeted.

The veteran seamer further slammed India’s approach as “mediocre” despite all the money and power at their disposal.

“Despite the money and power, we have become used to celebrating mediocrity and are far from how champion sides are. Every team plays to win and so does India but their approach and attitude is also a factor for underperformance over a period of time,” he added.

The third and final ODI between India and West Indies will be played on Tuesday and it will be followed by a five-match T20I series.

India and West Indies are placed very differently in their approach and outlook ahead of the three-match ODI series that gets underway on Thursday. For the hosts West Indies, the aim is to build from ground up after the disappointment of missing out on the Cricket World Cup for the first time. Meanwhile, for India, it is an opportunity to fine-tune their combination with just two months left for the big event at home.

With no World Cup to prepare for, no Super League points on offer, and nothing of note in the horizon, West Indies have little to look ahead to. The next World Cup, in 2027, will feature 14 teams based on the ODI rankings which makes things more viable for the Windies.

Away from little purpose in the short run, in the grand scheme of things, West Indies and its fans can focus on making things tougher for the ‘biggies.’ With the gap between lower-ranked teams and the top ones reducing, even as the sport tries its best to keep the Associate sides at arm’s length, West Indies and their prowess in white ball cricket puts them in a better spot.

So, West Indies, affected by geopolitics, sport’s economics and drop in quality, can focus on the next ball rather than what the cricket world is doing two months down the line.

For India, the focus is firmly on the World Cup. With Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant not available, others have the opportunity to make a late dash and maybe, just maybe, squeeze themselves into reckoning. But, preparing for the worst is key for India.

In the squad, Suryakumar Yadav will be targeting an improvement in his 50-over credentials while Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson are likely to audition for the wicketkeeper’s slot. In the absence of Iyer, SKY can make the No 4 spot his own but needs to replicate his T20 heroics in the longer format. It didn’t help that he recorded a hat-trick of first ball ducks in the previous series against Australia.

With KL Rahul and Pant recovering, wicket-keeper batter’s role is pivotal – not just on its own but even for a standby. KL Rahul is likely to step right back in after rehab process to treat the thigh injury he picked up during the IPL, it is the second spot that is wide open.

Samson will be hoping to get game time in his comeback series and build on an average of 66 in 11 ODIs. Kishan, who impressed with the bat and the gloves in the Test series, is expected to start the first ODI.

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill are expected to open the innings which means more time on the bench for Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Vice-captain Hardik Pandya, who has not played since the IPL final, has a tight schedule ahead with the five T20Is following the ODIs, bringing workload management to the forefront. Considering he will captain the T20I side, he might get a breather during the ODIs.

In the bowling department, it is another opportunity for pacer Umran Malik to make an impact. The 23-year-old has the tendency to leak runs but is a genuine wicket-taking option. He has taken 13 wickets in seven ODIs.

Yuzvendra Chahal has gone down the pecking order of spinners and Kuldeep Yadav was picked ahead of him against Australia. The leggie will be eagerly waiting for his chance.

Kuldeep has been rewarded for his consistency in ODIs this year. The left-arm spinner has played eight of India’s nine ODI games this year and picked 15 wickets at an average of 21.13. He has an excellent record in the Caribbean, where he has 11 wickets in seven games.

Squads:

West Indies: Shai Hope (captain), Rovman Powell (vice-captain), Alick Athanaze, Yannic Cariah, Keacy Carty, Dominic Drakes, Shimron Hetmyer, Alzarri Joseph, Brandon King, Kyle Mayers, Gudakesh Motie, Jayden Seales, Romario Shepherd, Kevin Sinclair, Oshane Thomas.

India: Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Virat Kohli, Surya Kumar Yadav, Sanju Samson (wicket-keeper), Ishan Kishan (wicket-keeper), Hardik Pandya (vice-captain), Shardul Thakur, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat, Mohd. England decided to stick with the same combination that nearly vanquished Australia in Old Trafford for the fifth and final Ashes 2023 Test that begins Thursday at The Oval.

Which means senior pacer James Anderson retains his place in the team despite a relatively modest outing in the fourth Test in Manchester. Anderson had been benched for the third Test in Headingley, which England ended up winning by three wickets to keep their hopes of an unlikely series victory alive.

England were on course for a commanding series-leveling win, riding on Zak Crawley’s brilliant 189 and contributions from Chris Woakes (5/62) and Mark Wood (3/27) in the first and second innings respectively.

That was before incessant rain played spoilsport, allowing just 30 overs of play on Day 4 and washing the entire final day out as the Pat Cummins-led Australian team retained the Ashes for a fourth time running.

Read | Test cricket needs balance between tradition and adaptability to ensure results

England, though, will be eyeing a series-leveling win in the finale in London to preserve their two-decade unbeaten record against the ‘Old Enemy’.

“Jimmy Anderson is the greatest fast bowler to play the game,” England captain Ben Stokes said. “He’s not had the impact and the wickets he’d have liked to in this series, he’s come under a bit of flak, but he’s a quality performer.”

Australia arrived in south London with an insurmountable lead as holder of the Ashes, but a similar scenario in 2019 saw the team come unstuck in the final Test and forced to settle for a drawn series.

The tourists have not won an Ashes series in England since 2001 so there is plenty on the line still.

Australia captain Pat Cummins believes the circumstances are completely different from 2019 and says his side is determined to end the 22-year wait.

“It feels really different here, this group has been really motivated to win the series,” Cummins said.

“We know that it wasn’t our best week last week and at the end of the game it was a bit of a pat on the back, ‘Well done, we’ve retained the Ashes,’ but really it feels like the job’s not done.”

The next five days could prove to be the end of an era for this Australia team, most of whom are aged 30 or above and may not be in contention for the next Ashes series in England in 2027. Opening batter David Warner, who turns 37 in October, on Tuesday quashed rumors he is set to retire imminently and intends to stick to his initial plan of finishing on home soil early next year.

The 30-year-old Cummins has no desire to see any player finish prematurely.

“It’s a hard one,” Cummins said. “I certainly don’t want to rush anyone out of the door. I think this is about the fourth Ashes series where Jimmy Anderson has said it’s going to be his last one, so you never quite know. It is just an age.”

England team: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Moeen Ali, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (captain), Jonny Bairstow, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood, Stuart Broad, James Anderson.

Day 4 preview: India will hope to gain a sizeable first innings lead and push for a victory on the fourth day of the second and final Test against West Indies at Port of Spain’s Queen’s Park Oval on Sunday.

West Indies had ended the third day on 229/5 with one-Test-old Alick Athanaze and senior all-rounder Jason Holder batting on 37 and 11 respectively.

The hosts decided to grind their way through the day, adopting a defensive approach with just 143 runs being collected from 67 overs throughout the day for the loss of five wickets.

The highlight of the third day was Windies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite going past fifty — the first half-century for a member of the home team in this series, and going on to score 75.

Saturday also witnessed Mukesh Kumar open his account with the ball in international cricket, getting fellow debutant Kirk McKenzie caught-behind, with rain making its way to the Queen’s Park Oval right after the dismissal and holding up play for a while.

Earlier India had posted 438 on the board in a day-and-a-half after being invited to bat by opposition skipper Brathwaite. Virat Kohli led the way with 121 — his 29th Test hundred and his 76th across international formats as well as his first away Test ton since 2018. What also helped the visitors’ cause were half-centuries from the skipper Rohit Sharma (80) and all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja (61) and Ravichandran Ashwin (56).

Shubman Gill had another disappointing outing with the bat after moving down a slot to No 3 in this series, getting caught-behind for 10 off Kemar Roach’s bowling. Also falling for a low score was vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, who was cleaned up by Shannon Gabriel.

India decided to hand Mukesh his maiden cap in this Test, bringing him in place of the injured Shardul Thakur. Windies too decided to field a debutant in McKenzie, bringing him in placed of Raymond Reifer. They also decided to play an extra pacer at the expensive of a spinner, bringing in Gabriel for Rahkeem Cornwall.

Day 5 preview: England will be busy praying rain doesn’t come in their way of pulling off a series-leveling win against Australia on the fifth and final day of the fourth Ashes Test in Manchester.

The fourth day of the penultimate Ashes Test witnessed rain wreak havoc at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground for a large portion of the day, as a result of which only 30 overs were bowled.

Australia are set to resume from their overnight score of 214/5, trailing England by 61 runs, with the hosts aiming to grab the remaining five wickets quickly to level the five-Test series 2-2 and take their quest to regain the urn to the decider at The Oval.

Australia, seeking their first Test series win on English soil in over two decades, resumed from their overnight score of 113/4 with Marnus Labuschagne tasked with the responsibility of steering his team towards safety. With the possibility of an Aussie victory quite low due to England’s massive first innings lead, the visitors were playing for a draw hoping the inclement weather would aid their cause.

Labuschagne, who was batting on 44 at the close of play on Day 3, would go on to bring up his 11th Test hundred while steering his team past the 200-mark. The South African-born No 3 batter steadied the Aussie ship with a 103-run fifth-wicket stand with all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, and was looking to bat out till tea when he was dismissed by part-time spinner Joe Root shortly before the end of the second session.

Rain then made its way back to the venue right after the players went back to their respective dressing rooms, and ensured the evening session was washed out without a single delivery bowled. At the close of play, Marsh was batting on 31 with fellow seam-bowling all-rounder Cameron Green unbeaten on 3.

Earlier, opener Zak Crawley smashed a blazing 189 off just 182 deliveries — his maiden Ashes ton and his fourth in Tests overall — while five others struck half-centuries. Wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow later smashed an unbeaten 99 off just 81 deliveries to get England within touching distance of 600, and was left stranded on that score by the time James Anderson, the last batter in, was trapped leg-before-wicket by Cameron Green.

Australia won the first two Tests in Edgbaston and Lord’s by two wickets and 43 runs respectively to go 2-0 up before England halved the deficit with a three-wicket win in the third Test at Headingley.

Two days after becoming the latest cricketer to represent India in Test cricket, Mukesh Kumar celebrated his maiden international wicket by dismissing Kirk McKenzie.

The Bengal pacer opened his account with the ball in the international game by getting fellow debutant McKenzie caught-behind for 32 on Day 3 of the second Test between West Indies and India at Port of Spain’s Queen’s Park Oval.

The wicket was the first of the day for the Indians and helped break the 46-run second-wicket partnership between Jamaica’s McKenzie and Windies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite. McKenzie perished while attempting to cut a short-of-length delivery from Mukesh that ended up holding its line and got an outside edge.

Watch the dismissal here:

Play however, had to be halted right after Mukesh’s dismissal of McKenzie as rain made its way to the Queen’s Park Oval, forcing the ground staff to bring the covers out and eventually washing the remainder of the morning session.

West Indies resumed from their overnight score of 86/1, with Brathwaite having got the home team off to a promising start by forging a 71-run opening partnership with Tagenarine Chanderpaul.

Brathwaite would later bring up his 29th Test fifty once play resumed and forge a 40-run third-wicket stand with Jermaine Blackwood before getting castled off Ravichandran Ashwin’s bowling.

India had earlier rode on Virat Kohli’s knock of 121 — his 29th Test hundred — as well as fifties from Rohit Sharma (80), Ravindra Jadeja (61) and Ravichandran Ashwin (56) to post a challenging first innings total of 438 — their second consecutive 400-plus total after their 421/5 in the first Test in Dominica.

India currently are leading the two-match series 1-0 after thrashing the Windies by an innings and 141 runs in the first Test, bowling them out for scores of 150 and 130 inside three days.

Day 1 report: Chris Woakes grabbed four wickets for 52 runs after Stuart Broad entered an elite list as England restricted Australia to 299/8 on Day 1 of the fourth Ashes 2023 Test at Manchester’s Old Trafford on Thursday.

The opening day of the penultimate Test witnessed Broad become only the second fast bowler and the fifth bowler overall to grab 600 or more wickets in Test cricket after dismissing Travis Head shortly after tea.

Broad collected two wickets for himself, having dismissed in-form opener Usman Khawaja for 3 with the new ball after England opted to field in the penultimate Test.

The Australian batters got off to a series of promising starts, Marnus Labuschagne and all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, the only batters to go past 50, getting dismissed for identical scores of 51. Head, who pulled a short ball from Broad to get caught by Joe Root near fine leg, fell two short of his half-century while Steve Smith departed for 41.

David Warner, who has managed to retain his place at the top of the order despite a mixed run so far in the series, became the first of Woakes’ four wickets, getting caught-behind for 32.

The Aussies, who are leading the series 2-1 following victories in the first two Tests, recovered from the shaky start and went to lunch on 107/2. Though they lost the wickets of Smith and Labuschagne in the second session, a score of 187/4 didn’t exactly put them in a position of peril.

The slide however, began after Woakes trapped Cameron Green (16) leg-before in the 63rd over, ending a 65-run sixth-wicket partnership with Marsh and dismissing the latter four deliveries later in the same over. Woakes would grab his fourth wicket shortly before stumps by getting Aussie wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey caught-behind for 20.

At close of play, Mitchell Starc was batting on 23 with skipper Pat Cummins on 1 for company.

India vs West Indies, 2nd Test preview: India will be aiming to complete a 2-0 series sweep when they take on West Indies in the second and final Test in Port of Spain starting Thursday.

The upcoming match will be the 100th Test between West Indies and India, with the former still leading the head-to-head record 30-23 despite not having beaten India in a Test for more than two decades now. As many as 46 matches between the two sides have ended in a draw.

The match will also witness star batter and former captain Virat Kohli become only 10th cricketer and the fourth Indian to complete 500 appearances in international cricket.

Rohit Sharma and Co began the series in style with a clinical innings and 141-run victory over the Windies inside three days at the Windsor Park in Roseau, Dominica.

The series opener would witness three debuts — Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ishan Kishan for India and Alick Athanaze for the West Indies. While Athanaze was the top-scorer for the Windies in both of their outings, Jaiswal led the way for India with a superb 171.

Skipper Rohit (103) too scored a century while Virat Kohli scored 76. In the bowling department, Ravichandran Ashwin led the way with hauls of 5/60 and 7/71, taking his tally of Test five-fors for 34 and registering his eighth 10-wicket match-haul in Tests.

While the prospect of beating the team that have twice reached the World Test Championship final appears bleak given the gulf in terms of quality as well as in their rankings, West Indies will hope to put up a better fight at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

For that to happen, the hosts will need more members of the XI to step up. Barring Athanaze (47 and 28), none of the West Indian batters were able to challenge the Indian attack that was led by Mohammed Siraj. The bowling department, meanwhile, could only collect five wickets on a difficult Windsor Park surface.

Teams:

West Indies: Kraigg Brathwaite (c), Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Kirk McKenzie, Jermaine Blackwood, Alick Athanaze, Joshua Da Silva (wk), Jason Holder, Alzarri Joseph, Kemar Roach, Jomel Warrican, Shannon Gabriel

India: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Ravindra Jadeja, Ishan Kishan (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Jaydev Unadkat, Mukesh Kumar, Mohammed Siraj

Transition was the buzzword before India began their Test series against West Indies and in some ways, Rohit Sharma and Co have already embarked upon the road to change. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ishan Kishan were the two Test debutants for India in the first Test which India won by an innings and 141 runs.

For debutant No 1, Yashasvi, it was a dream initiation into international cricket as the southpaw amassed 171 runs in his debut innings and was declared the Player of the Match in his first game. The most impressive aspect of Yashashvi’s maiden outing in international cricket was how he adapted to the conditions at Dominica and the slow pitch on offer. The Rajasthan Royals batter who struck runs at a strike rate of 163.61 in IPL 2023 took 215 balls to get to his debut hundred.

The innings was classy and gritty at the same time as Jaiswal consumed 387 balls during his knock, making the record for facing the most deliveries by an Indian on debut.

For debutant No 3, Kishan, who was preferred over KS Bharat, it was a decent game with the gloves in which he took two catches but only got 20 balls in India’s only innings, scoring one run.

For both, Jaiswal and Kishan, who have become the first to initiate the transition in the Test side after a defeat in the World Test Championship final 2021-23, the second Test would be one more opportunity to showcase their class and seal a permanent spot.

India’s next Test assignment after the West Indies series will come on the tour of South Africa in December-January and hence it becomes extremely crucial to put in a performance that will stay in memory for a while.

While Kishan would hope for more balls where he could display his aggressive batting and put himself at the top of the pecking order, especially in case Rishanbh Pant isn’t 100% ready for Test cricket by the end of the year, Yashasvi would have his eyes on another century, which would not only guarantee him a long run as an opener in Test cricket but also put him in the exclusive club as the third India batter after Sourav Ganguly and Rohit Sharma to score a century in their first two Test innings.

Rahane looks for big runs

There’s one more player who has a point to prove.

Making a return to Test cricket after 18 months, Ajinkya Rahane emerged as India’s best batter in the WTC final with knocks of 89 and 46 at the Oval. At Dominica, he could only score 3 but India’s batting coach Vikram Rathour has already indicated that the management is looking at Rahane as an option for South Africa.

“When it comes to technique, you constantly work on that but what stood out for me that he was much more calm in his approach. He was playing late and close to the body. He is still batting the same way in the nets,” Rathour said ahead of the second Test.

“We hope he will do well. Conditions in South Africa, you will need somebody like him to come good.”

Rahane currently holds the slot that belonged to Shreyas Iyer not too long back. A back injury has pushed Iyer out of the side, but Rahane knows that lack of runs in the second Test will once again put him on the brink in Test cricket.

Team combination

Apart from Jaiswal, Kishan and Rahane, most of the slots are occupied by first-choice players. Shardul Thakur and Jaydev Unadkat were the only other players who are not guaranteed starters.

Both Thakur and Unadkat hardly had any opportunities in the first Test. Together they bowled just 16 overs with Thakur taking one wicket and their batting never came. Will India stick with them for the second Test or experimentation could happen?

India captain Rohit Sharm has already declared that there will be no “drastic changes” which means if there’s a change it would be inspired from the pitch.

Spin all-rounder Kevin Sinclair has been added to the West Indies squad for the second Test in place of batting all-rounder Raymon Reifer. This indicates a spin-friendly track at the Queen’s Park Oval but that would be a blunder for the hosts.

Ravichandran Ashwin took 12 wickets in the Test and Ravindra Jadeja had five. The hosts should look for pitches that help pacers and can assist the likes of Kemar Roach and Alzarri Joseph. It looks difficult at the moment that they can beat India in the spin game.

But if it’s another turner then India could play Axar Patel in place of Shardul Thakur.

Trivia: The Port of Spain match will be the 100th Test between India and West Indies.

Live Streaming: The match will start on 20 July at 7.30 PM IST. It will be streamed live for free on the JioCinema app and website. The match will also be available on Fancode and the telecast will be available on DD Sports.

England vs Australia 4th Test Day 1: Hosts captain Ben Stokes won the toss at Manchester and decided to field first against Australia in the fourth Test. Australia are currently 2-1 up in the five-match series after first three games.

It’s an interesting decision by Stokes and no captain has ever won a match at Old Trafford, Manchester after opting to bowl first but the England captain is hoping to make history.

“We’re going to bowl. (On no team winning after electing to bowl first at Manchester) Will be a nice thing for us to do that,” Stokes said at the toss. “The clarity helps, we had the same mindset in the last game. Spoke about the weather quite a bit last week but doesn’t look too bad today. We’ll have to adapt. If the game gets to a point where we need to push things on we’ll be able to do that, that’s how we play naturally.

Veteran pacer James Anderson is back for England in place of Ollie Robinson.

“Anderson has been an unbelievable performer. He offers a lot in terms of control, no issues whatsoever with him. Moeen can have an impact on the game batting at three. He’s more than capable of playing there, takes nothing away from Brook,” Stokes added.

Australia skipper Pat Cummins said that his team wants to win the series in Manchester.

“We would’ve bowled first too but not a bad toss to lose, looks a good wicket. The game is played at quite a quick pace here. We’ve got two all rounders and Travis Head, gives us lot of options. There’s always a bit of risk, we’ve gone for a slightly different lineup than usual. We absolutely want to win this, we want to win the series and the guys are here to win this. We all had a great break, some of the guys went to different places in Europe.”

England XI: Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, Harry Brook, Joe Root, Ben Stokes(c), Jonny Bairstow(w), Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood, Stuart Broad, James Anderson

Australia XI: David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Cameron Green, Alex Carey(w), Pat Cummins(c), Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood

Pakistan are likely to play India on September 2 in Kandy in the Asia Cup, with the tournament slated for an August 30 start. As per a report, the tournament opener will be played in Multan with hosts Pakistan taking on Nepal. The final is reportedly scheduled for September 17 in Colombo.

The original draft schedule prepared by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), who are the official hosts, has already undergone multiple changes. These matches feature in the latest draft shared and could well see further updates before final schedule is announced at 7:45 PM IST on July 19.

The confusion and iterations are required owing to the logistical challenge posed by having the tournament be played in two countries – Pakistan and Sri Lanka – in a hybrid model.

Asia Cup will witness 13 matches be played and as per the original announcement by the Asian Cricket Council, four of those were pencilled in for Pakistan and nine in Sri Lanka. After initial plans of all matches being kept in one city, Multan has been added as a second venue, reports ESPNCricinfo.

Beyond the opener in Multan, Lahore is drafted in to host three group matches and one Super Fours game.

As per the draft schedule, Bangladesh vs Afghanistan is scheduled for September 3 in Lahore followed by Sri Lanka vs Afghanistan at the Gaddafi Stadium on September 5.

The draft schedule clarifies that regardless of where they finish from the group stage, Pakistan will remain A1 and India A2 while Sri Lanka B1 and Bangladesh B2. In case and Nepal and Afghanistan qualify forward, they will take the slot of the team knocked out (Pakistan or India in Group A and Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in Group B).

The only Super Fours match included in the draft schedule to be played in Pakistan is on September 6. In case both Pakistan and India advance to the Super Four round, they would play again on September 10 in Kandy.

The Pakistan matches are scheduled to start at 1 PM local time (1:30 PM IST/Sri Lanka Stanard Time).

Group A of the Asia Cup includes Pakistan, India and Nepal while Group B features Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. The top two teams from each group will progress to the Super Four stage with the top two teams making the final.

The Asia Cup, to be played in a 50-over format, is essentially a preparation run for five of the six teams (except Nepal) for the ODI World Cup which begins from October 5 in India.

India women vs Bangladesh women preview: In the first ODI, Marufa Akther and Rabeya Khan emerged key figures in Bangladesh’s first win against India in ODIs. India were bowled out for 113 and lost by 40 runs. This came after Amanjot Kaur, on ODI debut, picked up a four-wicket haul to restrict Bangladesh to 152. The game was then reduced to 44 overs each owing to a two-hour rain delay.

In the 1st ODI, India had left out Shafali Verma and handed debuts to Amanjot and B Anusha. The bowlers did a decent job of restricting the hosts to just 152 but the batters failed to do their job. On a slowing surface, India went from 91/5 to 91/8 in no time.

Bangladesh, thus, lead the three-match series 1-0 and a win here would be a massive feat for them. For India, though, it would add to the multiple question marks that persist amid the switcheroo of squads and selections. Not that there is anyone answering anything to begin with.

Shahid Afridi on Saturday voiced support in favour of sending the Pakistan team to India for the ICC ODI World Cup later this year.

The former Pakistan captain and all-rounder said tours of India were always high on pressure, and it was that pressure that made matches in the neighbouring country a lot more fun.

Afridi also revealed an incident where the stones were thrown at the Pakistan team bus following their victory over India in the 2005 Test in Bengaluru while adding that the pressure was added by the fact that they had little to no support at Indian venues.

“It was a high pressure moment in our careers. When we hit boundaries, there was no one to cheer. When we won the Bangalore Test and were departing for hotel, stones were pelted on the team bus.

“Pressure is always there and you should enjoy that pressure. players are saying that Pakistan should not go to India. I am totally against it, I think we should go there and win the match,” Afridi during an interaction with reporters.

The Pakistan team under Inzamam-ul-Haq’s leadership managed to defeat Sourav Ganguly’s India by 168 runs, levelling the three-match series 1-1 as a result.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), meanwhile, have insisted the decision to send the team to India for the World Cup that takes place in India in the months of October and November lies with the Shehbaz Sharif-led government.

Pakistan sports minister Ehsan Mazari had recently stated that the Babar-led team would not be travelling to India for the World Cup if India stuck to their demand of playing the Asia Cup on a neutral venue.

Read | Ex-PCB chief questions Pakistan government on World Cup participation

The PCB had earlier threatened to boycott the ODI World Cup if the BCCI refused to send the Indian team to Pakistan for the Asia Cup that takes place right before the World Cup.

PCB has since offered a hybrid model for the continental event that has been accepted by the Asian Cricket Council, wherein four matches would take place in Pakistan and the remaining fixtures, including India’s matches would take place in Sri Lanka.

Toss update: Bangladesh won the toss and opted to field in the first T20I against Afghanistan on Friday.

Preview: Bangladesh take on Afghanistan in a two-match T20I series that starts in Sylhet on Friday.

Bangladesh will be looking to return to winning ways after losing the ODI series with a 2-1 scoreline.

For Bangladesh, Towhid Hriday was one of the silver linings after he scored a fifty in the first ODI, and he would be looking to carry on that sort of form with the bat in the T20Is.

As far as the pace attack is concerned, the onus will rely on Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud, both of them have been dependable so far.

For Afghanistan, Hazratullah Zazai and Rahmanullah Gurbaz will all but open the batting.

Mohammad Shahzad, who last played a T20I in 2021, is back in the Afghanistan squad but it remains to be seen if he gets a chance.

The inaugural edition of the Zim Cyber City Zim Afro T10 is just around the corner with the tournament kicking-off on the 20th of July 2023, and will run till the 29th, with all the matches being played at the Harare Sports Club in Harare Zimbabwe.

The tournament is organised together by Zimbabwe Cricket and T Ten Global Sports. Five teams will compete against each other in the first ever T10 Zim Afro, one of them being the Cape Town SAMP Army, who have appointed South African cricketing legend Lance Klusener as Head Coach for the tournament.

Klusener who has been associated with the T10 format for a number of years spoke about how the shortest format of the game has helped elevate the sport further, “It’s the same as how T20 has helped the game globally. I guess it’s forced people to innovate and get going right from the start and T10s are even faster than T20. I’m not sure it’s going to change the game instantly but I do think it can eventually. 4

What T10 brings is a whole game in an hour and a half. I just think it’s been extremely successful in Abu Dhabi and what it does is that it gives opportunities to players who possibly haven’t been selected in big competitions to showcase their talent in a T10 match.”Klusener went on to talk about the challenges he has had to navigate as a coach of a T10 side, “Yeah, it’s quite a difficult format to coach if you haven’t played it before.

I think my job is just to make sure that the players know what’s required, what’s needed certainly from a planning point of view. Aspects such as what’s a decent total on a good surface.”He further added, “I think in T10 cricket players need to back their ability and their skills and trust themselves right from the get go.

There’s no time to set yourself a platform to get in or anything like that, yes, ones and twos are important in between, but you need a group of players who are prepared to put themselves out there and take the risks. It is my job as a coach to make sure they’ve got the confidence and the trust in people batting behind them or bowling behind them that they will have a good day.

In T10, you just need one guy to have an outstanding day to change the game for you. So, it’s exciting. It’s short and sweet. It’s fast and for me, it’s the future of cricket.”

The 51-year-old coach and legendary all-rounder concluded by speaking about what makes the T10 format so unique and how it will help the sport in Zimbabwe. He said, “I am really looking forward to it. I’ve been a part of the Abu Dhabi T10 for many years now and it really is a fantastic format, a fantastic competition, so I think bringing T10 cricket into Zimbabwe and into Africa is a great idea and certainly looking forward to the competition.”

Yashasvi Jaiswal made the most of the opportunity handed to him by bringing up a patient century on debut on the second day of the first Test between West Indies and India in Dominica.

The southpaw remained unbeaten on 143 at close of play, his measured knock the highlight of India’s steady batting display on the second day as they reached 312/2 at stumps, stretching their lead to 162.

He shared a mammoth opening partnership worth 229 with skipper Rohit Sharma, who brought up his 10th Test hundred shortly after Jaiswal, and later stitching an unbroken 72-run stand with Virat Kohli, who remained unbeaten on 36.

Mumbai and Rajasthan Royals batter Jaiswal, drafted into the side as an opener with Shubman Gill shifting to the No 3 slot, continued from where he left off on the opening day and converted the promising start into a big score.

Jaiswal brought up the three-figure mark with a boundary off fellow debutant Alick Athanaze, taking 215 deliveries along the way and becoming the 17th Indian batter to score a hundred on Test debut.

Jaiswal, incidentally, is the first from his country to score a century on Test debut in the Caribbean, and also broke Mohammad Azharuddin’s 38-year-old record for the most deliveries faced by an Indian Test debutant.

More to follow

Brief scores:

India 312/2 in 113 overs (Yashasvi Jaiswal 143*, Rohit Sharma 103; Alick Athanaze 1/33) lead West Indies 150 in 64.3 (Alick Athanaze 47; Ravichandran Ashwin 5/60, Ravindra Jadeja 3/26) by 160 runs.

West Indies keeper Joshua Da Silva cops a painful blow while collecting the ball in Roach's 16th over. Meanwhile, Alzarri Joseph has left the field and he is replaced by left-arm seamer Raymond Reifer, who has bowled a solitary over so far today. Two singles off Reifer's over, the second of which takes Virat Kohli past Virender Sehwag's Test run-tally of 8,503 runs for India.

HawkEye shows three reds in favour of the bowling side, with Impact bang at the centre of the middle stump and the ball going on to hit middle and leg. Jaiswal, meanwhile, adds another feather to his cap, going past Mohammad Azharuddin's record for most deliveries faced by an Indian on Test debut. Azharuddin had faced 322 deliveries on debut against England at Kolkata's Eden Gardens in 1984.

Day 1 report: India will look to consolidate their position in the first Test against West Indies in Dominica, when they take field on Thursday for Day 2.

The visitors were clinical in their approach on Wednesday after being asked to field first, with Ravichandran Ashwin, returning to the side, finishing with figures of 5/60 to see Windies off for 150. He was well-supported by fellow spin-bowling all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who collected three wickets for 26 runs.

This was Ashwin’s 33rd five-fer in Test cricket, as well as his fifth against Windies since he made his Test debut against this very side in 2011.

Barring debutant Alick Athanaze (47), none of the West Indian batters were able to convert starts into big knocks. Local boy Athanaze narrowly missed out on a half-century on Test debut, getting dismissed by Ashwin shortly before tea on the opening day.

And in their first innings reply, India were 80/0 after 23 overs at stumps, with debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal (40*) and his skipper Rohit Sharma (30*) at the other end.

Yashasvi Jaiswal got his international career off to a memorable start by slamming a century on Test debut on Day 2 of the first Test between West Indies and India in Dominica.

The southpaw brought up the milestone with a single off fellow debutant Alick Athanaze during the second session on Thursday, consuming 215 deliveries and collecting 11 boundaries along the way.

Watch the moment here:

Jaiswal, whose selection came on the back of impressive performances for Mumbai and the Rajasthan Royals in the domestic circuit and the IPL respectively, thus became the 17th Indian to score a hundred on Test debut.

Prithvi Shaw and Shreyas Iyer were the last Indians to achieve the feat, in 2018 and 2021 respectively although both tons came on home soil. What makes Jaiswal’s feat unique is the fact that he is the first Indian batter to score a hundred on Test debut in the Caribbean.

Here are some of the reactions to Jaiswal’s knock:

The Mumbai batter scored nine centuries and two half-centuries in the domestic circuit before making his Test debut, his stats highlighting his penchant for converting fifties into tons.

Jaiswal got Team India off to a solid start in reply after the visitors bundled West Indies out for a sub-par 150 on the opening day of the first Test.

The southpaw stitched an opening partnership with skipper Rohit Sharma that has gone past the 201-run stand between Virender Sehwag and Sanjay Bangar in Mumbai in 2002 to become the highest opening stand against West Indies home or away.

Rohit would bring up his century shortly after Jaiswal, completing his tenth Test hundred and his second away from home with a boundary off Alick Athanaze. He would, however, be dismissed the very next delivery, getting a glove-pad deflection to get caught by the keeper.

The ongoing two-Test series is the first assignment for both India and West Indies in the new World Test Championship cycle the is set to run till the summer of 2025.
