Ashes Live Cricket Score: After England wasted dream bowling conditions on day one at Lord’s, it mined excellent batting conditions on day two to slash Australia’s first-innings lead of 416 to 138 in the second Ashes Test on Thursday.

England had 278 runs and gifted all four of its fallen wickets to Australia without regrets.

“We’ve played positive cricket for 12 months and we’re certainly not going to change,” Ben Duckett said after falling for 98. “If we get close or a lead, we’re certainly in this game.”

Worse news for Australia was losing spinner Nathan Lyon to a suspected torn right calf while fielding. He’s not expected to return for the match, a cruel twist in his 100th consecutive test, and could be out of the Ashes series, a major blow to Australia’s chances of retaining the urn.

“Nathan, if he is no good, would be a huge loss,” teammate Steve Smith said. “However, we have Todd Murphy waiting in the wings, who has been bowling beautifully in nets and bowled really well in India (in February-March) when he got his opportunity.”

Following the England bowlers’ worst first day at Lord’s in 15 years, they rebounded with a great second day.

It may have contained 75% more chaos than any of the five at Edgbaston, but England and Australia once again served up an absolutely engrossing day of Ashes cricket on Thursday.

Day 1 at Lord’s had felt almost exclusively one-sided, Australia’s success with the bat all the more galling for England given they had won the toss and were expected to make the most of helpful bowling conditions.

By contrast Day 2 was altogether more egalitarian with its successes and failures, England no doubt the happier of the two sides with their performance but imperfect enough to leave the fate of the match still fascinatingly undecided.

The day started with England desperately needing to make better use of the second new ball than they had with the first. With Steve Smith eyeing a hundred and Australia an imposing first innings total, quick wickets were the order of the day.

Stuart Broad soon obliged, Alex Carey LBW in the second over – a judicious use of DRS ensuring England did get the early breakthrough. Pat Cummins’ 22 ensured the Australian tail wagged just a little, but to go from 316/3 in the final session of the first day to 416 all out before lunch on the second, marked a big reversal in fortunes.

Opening partnerships have not been a bringer of great joy for England fans in recent years, but Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett soon picked up the English fightback where the bowlers had left off.

First the textbook cliched ‘tricky little session’ before lunch was negotiated, then after the break it was England’s turn to make the opposition attack look toothless. Well, at least for a bit – the overwhelming compulsion to miss the ball coming down the track to Nathan Lyon eventually proving just too hard to resist – Carey producing another excellent stumping to remove Crawley.

As Ollie Pope and Duckett batted together either side of Tea, Australia looked increasingly out of ideas, eventually settling on trying a short ball trap. England obligingly decided to fall straight into it.

Pope holed out to deep back square, Duckett fell two agonising runs short of an excellent hundred, caught at fine leg, Joe Root survived gloving an attempted pull shot on 1 through to the keeper – from a Cameron Green no ball that incorrectly felt crucial at the time – only to swat another short ball in the air to Smith nine runs later. Harry Brook might have joined the procession had he not been dropped when pulling to Marnus Labuschagne at square leg.

It is tempting to rage and despair at the folly of some of England’s shots in the later part of the day, but it is easy to be wise after the event and not perhaps as simple as that.

Yes the manner in which England lost their wickets was by and large incredibly frustrating, but equally a fairly unproven top three – staring down the barrel of significant scoreboard pressure – put on 200 against the world’s best bowling attack on a pitch that was still offering something for the bowlers. The fact that they have been given the license to, at times, play stupid shots is not just crucial but perhaps the cornerstone of it. To some degree you have to accept the rough of ‘Bazball’ with the smooth.

That said you feel that as time goes on England will learn when perhaps to insert a little more brain into proceedings – in the end it took the entrance of Ben Stokes to calm things down for them, the captain showing the merits of adapting their approach with a calming 57-ball 17 that saw England through to 278/4 at the close.

However on a thrilling day, that saw nine wickets fall and 355 runs scored in total, it was an innocuous event in the field that could prove to be the most crucial in the eventual outcome of the series. Nathan Lyon pulling up with what appeared to be a calf strain, his participation in the rest of the match and perhaps the series, seemingly seriously in doubt.

So all in all just another regular day in this Ashes series, make sure to follow the next one, anything might happen really.

England vs Australia 2nd Test Live: The table was set perfectly for England. Toss won and Australia sent in on a grassy strip at Lord’s. Light drizzle just before play started in the second Ashes Test made the air even more humid. The skies were leaden enough for the floodlights to stay on all day Wednesday.

The two highest wicket-takers at Lord’s could fire the first shots.

This was as good as it gets for England. A dream.

James Anderson and Stuart Broad produced swing and nicks off the bats of Australia openers David Warner and Usman Khawaja but they were dropped.

The waterfall of wickets expected by England — and Australia — didn’t materialize and the Australians, after enduring the tough morning and Just Stop Oil protesters, posted a remarkable 339-5 by stumps.

Steve Smith, booed when he walked in and politely clapped when he walked off at stumps, led Australia’s charge with an unbeaten 85. Alex Carey was on 11.

Smith anchored century stands with Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head after Warner and Khawaja frustrated England in the morning.

Josh Tongue, making his Ashes debut, became the first England bowler to bowl out Australia’s opening batsmen since 1968, and the first at Lord’s since 1884.

But the bowling decayed on a slow pitch. Anderson conceded only 29 runs from 15 overs without luck but England conceded 36 extras, including 12 no balls.

Another concern was No. 3 batter Ollie Pope, who injured his right shoulder making a stop after lunch and didn’t return to the field. England said he was receiving ice treatment.

England dropped Moeen Ali to be without a specialist spinner or spin-bowling allrounder for only the second time in 20 years, and needed part-timer Joe Root’s two late wickets in one over to revive some hope.

Jasprit Bumrah is going to be a vital player for India at the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 which starts on 5 October but the pacer has not played for India since the home T20Is against Australia in September in 2022. Suffering from a back niggle for a long time, the 29-year-old Mumbai Indians cricketer missed India’s T20 World Cup 2022 campaign, which ended with a semi-final defeat to England, and the World Test Championship (WTC) final 2023, which India lost to Australia by 209 runs earlier this month.

Read | India fixtures list for ICC World Cup 2023

The fast bowler also missed the entire season of IPL 2023 after undergoing surgery in New Zealand in March of this year.

It has now been reported that Bumrah is currently at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for rehabilitation and the good news is that the pacer’s recovery is going smoothly with him also bowling seven overs in a day.

He has so far not complained of any discomfort and it is expected that he will be match-fit by the time of the T20Is in Ireland in August. However, it’s felt that there’s no need to rush him back into action and Asia Cup could be a time for him to play for India again, a report in Indian Express said.

“For an injury of this nature, it is not wise to set any timeline as constant monitoring is necessary. But it can be said that Bumrah is recovering well and he has bowled seven overs at NCA nets. It is a steady increase in his workload from the light workouts and bowling sessions of the initial period.

“He will play a few practice matches [at NCA] next month, and there will be a close assessment of his fitness then,” a source with knowledge of the development had earlier told the news agency PTI.

Ramji Srinivasan, former strength and conditioning coach of Team India, said Bumrah should be made to play in domestic cricket before bringing him back to international cricket.

“He should not be hurried. Playing practice matches at the NCA is a good step as it will help tune his body to the demands of a match. But he should be made to play in some actual [domestic] matches before bringing him to top-level cricket.

“The demands of international cricket are different and the body should be absolutely ready to take that amount of workload. Recovering from stress fracture is a delicate exercise and Bumrah should be allowed maximum recovery time,” Ramji told PTI.

Two other crucial players for India are rehabilitating at NCA — KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer.

Both batters are crucial from the World Cup 2023 perspective and are also recovering well.

Rahul suffered a thigh injury during IPL 2023 and underwent surgery in London, while Iyer was facing issues with a bulging disc on his lower back and did surgery in London.

A report in Indian Express stated that Rahul will begin his skills training in mid-July and should be fit for the Ireland tour, however, as is the case in such injuries, no date has been fixed for the batter’s return.

Rahul is seen as the wicket-keeper option for India in the World Cup.

Iyer is undergoing physiotherapy at NCA and he is still some distance away from skills training which means the Mumbai batter may not even get fit for the Asia Cup 2023 in August-September.

Sanju Samson and Suryakumar Yadav are to be groomed as Iyer’s replacement in case the batter fails to get fit in time.

Iyer suffered the back injury during the Sri Lanka series at home.

England vs Australia 2nd Test: England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and put Australia into bat in the second Ashes Test under grey skies at Lord’s on Wednesday.

“The overheads have played a massive part in this,” Stokes said. “The wicket looks like it’s got plenty of grass on it so hopefully we can exploit that this morning.”

England brought in fast bowler Josh Tongue for off-spinner Moeen Ali and Australia recalled pace bowler Mitchell Starc in place of Scott Boland.

Ali injured his spinning finger in his comeback Test at Edgbaston but he trained fully this week. England will rely on the part-time off-breaks of Joe Root, who has 18 wickets from 29 tests at an average of 55.44. Stokes said he will also bowl more after committing to 14 overs for two wickets in the first Test.

“We felt having the four seamers, we wanted a point of difference and Tonguey gives us that,” Stokes said. “Joe bowled well last week when he got responsibility with the ball. He’s really enjoyed the challenge of coming on and changing the game with the ball.”

“We just wanted some variety,” Australia captain Pat Cummins said on their solitary team change. “We’re really happy with how Scott has been going. Unfortunately he is the one to miss out this week but we’re excited to have someone of Starcy’s class come back in.”

Australia lead the five-match series 1-0 following their two-wicket victory in the first Test at Edgbaston.

England XI: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (captain), Jonny Bairstow, Ollie Robinson, Stuart Broad, Josh Tongue, James Anderson.

Australia XI: David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Cameron Green, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins (captain), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood.

Logan van Beek starred in one of the most thrilling finishes in the history of One-Day Internationals, his all-round heroics helping Netherlands stun West Indies in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 Qualifier in Harare on Monday.

Christchurch-born van Beek, whose grandfather Sammy Guillen had represented both West Indies and New Zealand, smashed a 14-ball 28 to help Netherlands get within touching distance of victory although Alzarri Joseph’s twin-strike in the final over of the chase ensured the two sides finished with identical scores of 374.

Van Beek, primarily a bowler but who proves handy with the bat more often than not, would then smash senior West Indian all-rounder Jason Holder for three sixes and as many fours, plundering 30 runs in the Super Over.

He would then remove Johnson Charles and Romario Shepherd when it was the West Indies’ turn to bat to not only seal a dramatic victory for the Scott Edwards-led side, but to also complicate two-time world champions West Indies’ chances of featuring in the 10-team Cricket World Cup in India later this year.

Though they’ve reached the Super Six stage of the World Cup Qualifier, West Indies are not carrying a single point as they’ve lost against both Zimbabwe and Netherlands — the other teams progressing from Group A — and will have to defeat Sri Lanka, Scotland and Oman comprehensively besides hoping other results go their way for them to have a chance.

The match also set social media alight with a barrage of reactions celebrating van Beek’s astonishing performance as well as the Indian-born Teja Nidamanuru’s century.

Here are select reactions to the Dutch victory:

Netherlands pulled off one of the greatest victories in its cricketing history when it defeated West Indies in a thrilling World Cup qualifying match that went down to the Super Over in Harare on Monday.

Teja Nidamanuru led a spirited chase with a brilliant ton and was ably assisted by Scott Edwards’ 67 off 47 deliveries to lay the foundation for the Dutch. A spirited eighth-wicket stand between Logan van Been and Aryan Dutt then put them on the brink of victory before a double-wicket final over by Alzarri Joseph ensured the two sides finished level on a score of 374.

Van Beek would then boss the Super Over, blasting senior West Indian all-rounder Jason Holder for 30 runs with three sixes and as many fours before striking twice in as many deliveries to seal what will go down as one of the most famous finishes in ODI history.

Earlier Nicholas Pooran struck an unbeaten 104 off 65 deliveries after half-centuries from openers Brandon King (76) and Johnson Charles (54) as West Indies posted a formidable 374/6 on the board.

The defeat means, the two-time former champions will now have to beat Sri Lanka, Oman and Scotland, then hope results go in their favour to stand a chance of qualifying for the prestigious tournament.

The Christchurch-born Van Beek, who has also represented New Zealand at the World U-19 Basketball Championships in 2009, struck 30 with the bat before taking the ball and conceding just eight, leading his side to a victory which saw them finish second in Group A and take two valuable points into the Super Six stage.

Having fallen to the final ball of the regular innings for a 14-ball 28 with just a single required, the all-rounder struck three sixes and three fours from the super over bowled by Jason Holder.

Holder had earlier held a brilliant catch to dismiss van Beek and force the unlikely tie but the Dutchman then seized control, removing Charles and Romario Shepherd with consecutive balls following his fireworks with the bat to decide the outcome.

The Windies started strongly with the bat after being put in as openers Charles and King added 101 before the former was trapped lbw.

Saqib Zulfiqar dismissed Sharmah Brooks (25) and King in consecutive overs before another century stand, this time between skipper Shai Hope and Pooran, ended when the former was caught on the rope while looking to bring up a half-century with a maximum.

Pooran brought up his second consecutive century before kicking on with Keemo Paul as the Windies hammered 61 off the last five overs.

Netherlands openers Vikramjit Singh (37) and Max O’Dowd (36) added 71 inside 10 overs in reply but Roston Chase dismissed both as West Indies fought back.

Wesley Barresi (27) and Bas de Leede (33) kept Netherlands on track and after both were removed by Akeal Hosein, Nidamanuru and captain Edwards put on 143 from just 15 overs to set up a frantic finish.

Edwards (67) was first to go and the game was back in the balance when centurion Nidamanuru (111) picked out Chase at third man.

Dutt (16) and van Beek took the equation to five from as many balls but Joseph took two wickets at the death to force a super over.

Van Beek made no mistake at the second time of asking to lead his side to a momentous victory following their highest-ever ODI score.

Williams maintains Zimbabwe’s perfect record

Elsewhere, Sean Williams’ swashbuckling 174 helped Zimbabwe maintain their 100 per cent record as they beat USA by 304 runs.

A USA side hampered by the absence of Saurabh Netravalkar and Ali Khan were given a tough time by Zimbabwe’s captain as Williams inspired the hosts to their latest victory.

After being put in by Monank Patel, Zimbabwe’s opening pair of Joylord Gumbie and Innocent Kaia started steadily, making 56 for the first wicket before Williams arrived at the crease.

He immediately set about dismantling the USA attack, hitting Nisarg Patel for three consecutive boundaries and brought up his 33-ball half-century with a six off Singh.

His century followed off just 70 deliveries but Gumbie’s luck ran out on 78 when he was stumped off the bowling of Nosthush Kenjige.

Sikandar Raza was in an equally destructive mood, hitting 48 off 27 before Ryan Burl made a quickfire 47 from 16 deliveries.

Williams finally fell for 174 but, with 408 on the board, the stand-in captain had more than fulfilled his duties with the bat. Zimbabwe’s bowlers then backed him up with a trio of early wickets putting them in a commanding position.

Virender Sehwag has finally opened up on the speculations that he has been approached by BCCI for the Indian men’s cricket team’s chief selector post. It was recently reported that Sehwag was approached by BCCI to become the chief selector a position which fell vacant after the exit of Chetan Sharma.

However, Sehwag’s reply to the Times of India on the question if he was approached by BCCI was a “No”.

Currently, Shiva Sunder Das is operating as the interim chief selector of the committee which also includes S Sharath (south), Subroto Banerjee (central) and Salil Ankola (west).

On Thursday, BCCI also officially invited applications for the North Zone selector post. It is believed that the new North Zone selector will also be named the chief selector.

While former players like Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh from the north meet most of the criteria for the job they do not qualify because cricketers who have retired from the game at least five years back can only be picked.

The other criteria is that the candidate should have played seven Tests or 10 ODIs or at least 30 first-class matches.

Former India opener Sehwag matches all the criteria, however, the remuneration package offered by BCCI could become a deal breaker for former top cricketers.

A chief selector is paid Rs 1 crore annually while other members get Rs 90 lakh.

Former India cricketers who had big careers can easily make 4-5 times more money by appearing as experts on news channels.

“During CoA’s time, Viru (Sehwag) was asked to apply for head coach’s job and then it went to Anil Kumble. It is unlikely he will apply himself and also the pay package isn’t something that will be financially viable for someone of his stature,” a BCCI official had recently told the news agency PTI.

Pakistan’s participation in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup which will be held in India is being discussed by the country’s foreign office. There had been no clarity so far on Pakistan taking part in the ICC event with former Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Najam Sethi once also announcing that the Men in Green would take part in the tournament in India.

On Friday, however, the Pakistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that they are evaluating its team’s participation in the World Cup. The lack of clarity on Pakistan’s participation has also led to a delay in the announcement of the World Cup fixtures.

“We have received the official invitation from the Indian prime minister to our prime minister for the virtual meeting of the heads of state of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation that is due to take place on the 4th of July,” Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, a spokesperson of the Pakistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.

“Pakistan will be represented at the summit. We will be making an announcement regarding our participation in the coming days.

“Regarding cricket, Pakistan is of the view that politics should not be mixed with sports. India’s policy of not playing cricket in Pakistan is disappointing. We are observing and evaluating all aspects relating to our participation in the World Cup including the security situation for Pakistani cricketers and we will offer our views to PCB in due course.”

Pakistan’s participation in the World Cup is subject to approval by their government.

As per the draft schedule, the World Cup is scheduled to start on 5 October while India and Pakistan are expected to face off against each other on 15 October in Ahmedabad.

Meanwhile, PCB also requested to change their venues for two group matches, a request which has been turned down by ICC and BCCI.

Pakistan who play Australia in Bengaluru on 20 October and Afghanistan in Chennai on 23 October wanted the venues to be swapped.

Pakistan cricket team’s last visit to India came in 2016 for the T20 World Cup during which also the India vs Pakistan contest had to be shifted from Dharamsala to Kolkata due to security reasons.

After finishing second in the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 cycle with a defeat to Australia in the final, Team India begin a new cycle with a tour of the Caribbean.

The Rohit Sharma-led Indian team though, will be enjoying a month’s break from cricketing action before they are seen in action again, at least in the international arena.

Following their 209-run defeat at the hands of the Pat Cummins-led Australia at the Oval between 7-12 June, the Indian team will not be in action until the two-match Test series in West Indies that begins on 12 July. The Tests will then be followed by three ODIs and five T20Is, with the Indian team staying back in the Caribbean until mid-August.

India’s poor performance in the WTC final, in which they could not cross the 300-mark even once while Australia posted a match-winning total of 469 in the first innings, will lead to a lot of questions and might force skipper Rohit and head coach Rahul Dravid to make some changes to their combination in the West Indies series and beyond.

Among the questions India will be hoping to find an answer to in the build-up to the first Test in Dominica would be the ideal wicket-keeper.

Rishabh Pant is yet to fully recover after meeting with a car accident in December, and is slowly beginning to walk without support at the moment. Former India captain KL Rahul too has failed to regain fitness after undergoing a thigh surgery ahead of the WTC Final, which has effectively ruled him out of action for a large portion of the year.

Wriddhiman Saha, meanwhile, has not represented India since the Mumbai Test against New Zealand in December 2021 and in all likelihood, might have played his final game for the national team already.

Which leaves India with two choices for the wicket-keeper’s slot in the upcoming seriers: Srikar Bharat and Ishan Kishan. Let’s take a look at the two in detail below:

Kishan:

Kishan was overlooked for the World Test Championship final against Australia but his superior batting skills compared to Bharat makes him the likelier candidate to be slotted into the playing XI in the first of the two Tests.

Pant too was initially not considered as skilled a keeper as say a Saha. Not only would Pant improve his glovework over time to transform into one of the better keepers of the current generation, he would thrive with the bat and produce several game-changing knocks for the Indian team batting in the middle-order, and would be responsible for some of their most memorable victories in recent times.

Ishan Kishan
Ishan Kishan is headed to the National Cricket Academy next week to train for the upcoming long West Indies tour. Reuters

Kishan, too, bats left-handed and is seen as someone who can take on bowling attacks in the manner that Pant has in recent years. The Mumbai Indians wicketkeeper-batter, who represents Jharkhand in the domestic circuit, will head to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru where he will undergo training in the build-up to the West Indies tour and has skipped the Duleep Trophy in the process.

India might just end up giving Kishan and Bharat one Test each in the series, but Kishan is likely to get the nod earlier.

Bharat:

Bharat was preferred ahead of Kishan in the WTC final, and while he gave a good account of himself behind the stumps in the marquee clash against the Aussies, the Andhra wicketkeeper-batter ended up registering scores of 5 and 23 at The Oval in London.

What further doesn’t help his case is the fact that he is yet to score a fifty in the Test format since making his debut in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Nagpur earlier this year.

Srikar Bharat was dismissed for scores of 5 and 23 in the ICC World Test Championship final. AP

The practice of selecting wicketkeepers purely on the basis of their glove work appears to be a thing of the past in the sport, else someone like Saha would have made way more Test appearances than 40 and should have been the No 1 choice following MS Dhoni’s retirement from the format in December 2014.

There is little doubt over the fact that Bharat was superb behind the stumps in the WTC Final. Bharat pulled off a number of excellent catches in the match and kept particularly well to the likes of Mohammed Shami, whose exaggerated movement is known to cause problems to the likes of Pant.

That aside, he was also spot on with his instincts when it came to DRS calls, helping minimise wastage of reviews in the process.

All that he needs to do is work on his batting skills. Then he might very well be giving Pant some competition for the first-choice wicketkeeper’s slot down the road.

But for now, India have to pick players with match-winning abilities, and it seems from the options they have, Kishan fits the bill more than Bharat.

MS Dhoni had an unforgettable run in IPL 2023 leading Chennai Super Kings to their fifth title. And he vowed to return for at least one more season if his body allowed. But what does the franchise CEO Kasi Viswanathan think about him playing the next IPL season?

Viswanathan has made a series of revelations about how an injured Dhoni fared through the tournament and won the summit clash, as per a report in ESPNcricnfo.

“We never asked him things like ‘do you want to play or do you want to sit out?’ If he can’t, he would’ve told us straightaway,” he said.

“We knew it was a struggle for him to play, but his commitment to the team, his leadership and how the team benefits everyone knows. From that perspective, you have to appreciate him,” he added harping on Dhoni’s commitment level.

Till the final, he never complained about his knee to anybody. Though everyone knew, and you would’ve seen him struggling while running, he never complained even once. After the final, he said, ‘okay, I’ll have a surgery’. He’s finished his surgery, he’s quite happy, he’s recovering,” Viswanathan added.

Dhoni went for surgery right after the IPL final and is expected to soon go to rehab.

“Actually, he told us immediately after the final is over he’ll fly to Mumbai, have surgery and go back to Ranchi for rehab,” Viswanathan said.

“In Mumbai, after Ruturaj’s wedding [on 4 June], I visited him. It was a courtesy call. He’s quite comfortable. He said he’ll rest for three weeks and then start his rehab. And like he said, he’s not going to play until January-February. We don’t need to remind him about all that,” Viswanathan said.

However, the answer to the question every Dhoni fan has is something even the CSK CEO has no clue about.

“He knows what to do, how to go about it, so we aren’t going to ask him ‘what are you going to do, how’ etc. He will inform us on his own. Whatever he’s doing, he’ll call first and inform only Mr N Srinivasan, not anyone else. Factually, he’ll be straightforward with him. From him, we’ll get the information that this is what he’s doing. It’s been this way since 2008. That’s how it will continue,” he replied to the question.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni called quits from international cricket in 2020 after a career that spanned over one-and-half decades and saw him win the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, ODI World Cup in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013, with the WTC being the only ICC title not to his name as the tournament started only in 2019, five years after he left Test cricket.

A career as lustrous as this has won him fans in perhaps all the young cricketers throughout the world today, especially wicket-keepers as he has had the fastest pair of hands behind the wickets, which were on display in the IPL just a month ago, where at 41 he won the fifth IPL title for CSK.

This IPL saw Dhoni spending time with youngsters whenever he had the opportunity, and they had their fan moments listening to every word from their idol.

One such Dhoni fan comes from Afghanistan, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, the KKR keeper. He was lucky to have a CSK jersey signed by MS Dhoni himself sent to him in Afghanistan. Although the IPL 2023 was nothing spectacular for the young Afghan, who scored 227 runs in 11 matches with a strike rate of 133.52, the support from Dhoni may give him the confidence to do better in the near future.

He took to Twitter to thank Dhoni.

“To me, the whole thing is like a dream. I am a big fan of Shah Rukh Khan and playing for his team. I am so happy to get the chance to play for KKR. I want to thank the KKR management for this,” Gurbaz told News18.

“That was the best moment for me. He is one of the best actors in the world. I didn’t expect the way he spoke to me. The way he use modesty is unexpected for me. He is the best person in the world. The best moment of my life was meeting Shah Rukh Khan,” he added.

Deep breath. Firstly, are you ok?

For five days these sides were locked in colossal struggle, steadfastly refusing to even reveal who held any real advantage, let alone who might actually win.

Finally at 7:25pm on the fifth day of this tantric clash a victor emerged. Fittingly in the final straight it was Australia who headbutted the line to take this one at the tape. The barest of margins a friend of England no more.

This was a pair of bickering siblings stubbornly refusing to concede an inch in an argument lasting five days — about the same amount of time knocked off the life expectancy of anyone who witnessed its final hours.

In perhaps the most anticipated Ashes series since 2005, somehow its opener has exceeded all expectation — the rare Test as simultaneously exhilarating as sickening for supporters of both teams.

Since Friday strange things have been afoot in Birmingham, the understood order of the cricketing world distorted through a confusing prism of bravado and mind games. To anyone who lived through the 1990s and early 2000s, the twin 5-0 drubbings Down Under, the evisceration the last time these teams met — this was a confusing tableau — England somehow recast as the carefree aggressors, Australia the rattled rearguard merchants. Roundheads become Cavaliers and vice versa.

In the Bazball vibe shift it is this reframing of the accepted narrative that has perhaps been its biggest achievement, never mind, apparently, that Australia are the newly minted World Test champions — with the top three ICC ranked batsmen and a fearsome stable of fast bowlers at their disposal.

In this bizarro world it is England with the snarling send offs, Australia taking a turn at being showered in expletives. It has made for thrilling theatre.

Ultimately though in a contest both teams deserved to win it was Australia who did. Carried to victory on the back of Usman Khawaja, his heroic efforts across two innings proving the deciding factor.

He finished the match with 206 runs from 518 balls, batting on every single day of the Test for a mammoth total of 796 minutes. Over 13 hours spent patiently and at times painstakingly dragging Australia to their hardest-fought Ashes win perhaps in living memory.

Australia’s Usman Khawaja celebrates after completing his century on Day 2 of the first Ashes Test in Edgbaston, Birmingham. AP

Such was his grip on the match that when he chopped a Ben Stokes slower ball onto his stumps in the day’s final session it seemed as if that would be the turning point of the game. England’s talismanic captain defying the state of his knee joints to summon yet one more match-defining moment from his apparently inexhaustible supply.

And yet in the end it was Australia’s captain who played the final defining hand, the coolest head among the 25,000 or so present, nervelessly steering his side across the line as England desperately pressed for the last two wickets that never came.

Cummins finished unbeaten on 44, the winning runs off his bat, a 1-0 series lead his reward.

Will England rue their early declaration on Day One? A smattering of missed chances in the field? The backfiring of a war of words waged on and off the field? Maybe their fans will but as far as the team goes it seems unlikely. After all there’s no crying in Bazball.

Instead in a week the series moves on to Lord’s, an opener for the ages in the books, the tantalising prospect of four more of these herculean contests stretching out into the summer ahead.

It just had to be Stuart Broad. His has been a career defined by great game-changing spells and, in the dying embers of yet another thrilling day of cricket at Edgbaston, he produced another to keep England’s hopes alive.

In a Test that refuses to be decided easily, Broad, returning for his second spell of the innings, struck twice in the space of five overs to remove the ICC’s top two ranked batters and perhaps decisively turn the match in England’s favour.

The last time these sides met in England Broad cultivated a hoodoo over David Warner, two innings into this series and he is already crafting the makings of one with Marnus Labuschagne.

After the much foretold Broad outswinger got him in the first innings, little time was wasted reintroducing the pair in the second. Ben Stokes brought Broad back on just 11 balls into Labuschagne’s knock.

He would survive just three balls sent down by Broad, the fourth got him fishing outside his off stump, edging through to Jonny Bairstow – Edgbaston erupting as one.

It was the exact shot of adrenalin England needed. Even with Warner back in the pavilion, Australia were looking worryingly untroubled at 78/1, that is as far as anyone supporting England was concerned.

Exit Marnus, enter Steve Smith – the master replacing the apprentice. Australia were 78/2, 203 needed, eight wickets left, ahead of the game but for how long?

Broad was determined to ensure it was as little time as possible. While at the City End England fretted over Moeen Ali’s spinning finger issues and a slightly indifferent spell from James Anderson, from the Pavilion End, Broad continued to charge in, roared on approvingly from all parts of the ground.

In his second over after dismissing Labuschagne he struck again. This time it was Smith, feet going nowhere, bat groping outside his off stump, edge gratefully pouched by Bairstow once more.

The last Ashes Test here Steve Smith made hundreds in both innings, this time England restricted him to just 22 runs across the two, a big early blow struck in the series ahead.

Broad pushed tirelessly until the close for one more blow, but with Scott Boland as nightwatchman and the increasingly obdurate Usman Khawaja, Australia survived further unscathed.

It has been a Test seemingly created specifically to render a non-cricket fan’s query of “who’s winning?” as difficult as possible to answer, the balance of power never resting with one side for long.

By this time tomorrow, someone surely will have won this game, but after four thrilling days at Edgbaston, we are still not much closer to knowing who.

Australia need 174 runs, England seven wickets – the threat of rain is the only potential spoiler to a Test that has somehow lived up to the mountainous pre-series hype and more.

England will return with their bowlers recharged, but also with a crucial question hanging over the meaningful contribution of Moeen with the ball. Australia must do it all without Smith and Labuschagne but Khawaja remains and Travis Head is still to come.

Too close to call would seem to be an understatement. After four days of electric Ashes cricket, seemingly the only certainty is that we’re getting one more.

Another day, another fascinating contest – and yet when the two sides reflect on its events, it seems certain that Australia will be the happier of the two.

There were moments when England threatened to wrestle the advantage firmly from the opposition but Australia remained resolute, patiently battling to ensure that by the close it was they who held the upper hand.

At the heart of everything for Australia was Usman Khawaja, out on the field from the first ball to the last, the calm head his team needed when his more trumpeted teammates had failed to deliver.

This was an innings of real stature from Khawaja, the man dropped seven different times by Australia determinedly proving every critic wrong, ball by studious ball. By the close he had 126, his 15th Test century and a first in England, celebrated with such emotion that his bat literally flew from his hands.

Without him Australia could have been in real trouble, as it was they finished just 82 runs behind England, over 10 overs put onto the second new ball and five wickets still in hand, a fantastic platform to put some real pressure on England on Day Three.

If holding onto regret and stewing over missed opportunities were not so antithetical to the entire changing room ethos Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes have been fostering, you would imagine that England would rue a few moments on the second day at Edgbaston. Moments when they could really have turned this game decisively in their favour.

Things started with so much promise for England, Stuart Broad first removing David Warner, to his and the majority of the crowd’s vociferous delight, then getting Marnus Labuschagne first ball – the fact that it was with his much talked up ‘new outswinger’ only making it all the sweeter.

There would be no record third Test hat trick for Broad, but there would be an over with the ball for Harry Brook – in total England used seven bowlers in the first session – determined to Bazball to their heart’s content all the way through this Test.

Brook didn’t get Steve Smith but his wicket did fall in somewhat unlikely fashion, Stokes trapping him LBW, not bad for a man who seemingly only started bowling again on Tuesday of this week.

If England had a chance to really get on top of Australia with Smith gone at 67/3, then when Moeen Ali tempted Travis Head into a horror chip to midwicket to reduce the tourists to 148/4 then they really smelled blood.

Two balls later came the moment that for a while at least looked to have had a big impact on this Test, Cameron Green skipping down the track second ball and getting nowhere near one from Moeen, Jonny Bairstow fumbling the stumping chance to give Australia a big let off.

Moeen did eventually get Green, but Australia had recovered somewhat to 220/5, the calming, ever-present Khawaja easing the pressure on his side.

With the second new ball came the second of England’s missed opportunities, Khawaja bowled by the second delivery sent down with it, an absolute beauty that had the crowd roaring and dreaming of an Australian tail skittled with a healthy English lead.

It was a dream that died all too quickly for England fans, Broad had overstepped, Khawaja reprieved, and by stumps he and Alex Carey had steered Australia to 311/5, the deficit below three figures, the hosts looking perhaps a little short of ideas.

Sunday though is a new day, England – not currently a side lacking in self-belief – will reason they are only two wickets away from seeing Nathan Lyon at the crease and with a refreshed bowling attack and a reasonably new ball will fancy their chances of batting again with a helpful if not daunting lead.

Australia though showed that they are a batting side not entirely dependent on Steve Smith, a team willing to battle through tough periods and meet English fire and funk with old fashioned grit and determination – Justin Langer would be proud if he wasn’t still bitter about his ousting from the side.

It leaves the contest once again fascinatingly poised, this was no difficult second album of a day, instead a follow up to yesterday’s smash hit opener that now leaves everyone feverishly expecting the next.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Najam Sethi’s comments on Friday cast fresh doubts over Pakistan’s participation in the upcoming ICC World Cup that will be hosted by India.

The arch-rivals are reportedly set for a showdown at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium 10 days after the opening clash on 5 October, with over a lakh spectators expected to attend the blockbuster clash. However, PCB chief Sethi cautioned that for the dream fixture to go ahead, the board must first receive permission from the Shehbaz Sharif-led Pakistan government.

“As far as India and Pakistan go, neither the PCB or the BCCI can take decisions. The respective governments only can take decisions,” Sethi said during a press conference.

“It’s our government who has to decide, just like when it comes to India, it’s their government that decides when they go to play. There is no point asking us if we will play in Ahmedabad.

“When the time comes, first it will be decided whether we are going or not, then the government decides where we will go. Our decision will rest on these two important conditions,” he added.

Tensions have resurfaced between PCB and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in recent months following India’s refusal to travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup due to security concerns and political tensions. Pakistan retaliated by threatening to boycott the ODI World Cup.

The Asia Cup has since been tweaked to a “Hybrid Model” — a solution offered by the Sethi-led PCB — with an initial round of matches taking place in Pakistan and the rest, including those involving India, in Sri Lanka. The hybrid solution had been formally accepted on Thursday by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), the body that organises the continental tournament and is led by BCCI secretary Jay Shah.

It is understood that once ICC CEO Geoff Allardice and chairman Greg Barclay visited Karachi to meet Sethi last month, it was decided that Pakistan won’t set any conditions for competing in the World Cup, provided four Asia Cup games are held in the country as they have the hosting rights.

Sethi further said, “We have told the ICC also that if our government looks into the security considerations and gives us permission, we will come to play in India. If they don’t give, how can we come and play in India?

“Even if the government gives us permission, we have to look at the venues and decide where to play. That comes later. Firstly, the government has to give us the nod. It has to tell us whether we can go or not.”

Ashes preview: English cricket’s “Bazball” revolution is about to get its ultimate test.

The Ashes — the most famous Test cricket series of them all — is here once again and the five matches between England and Australia could be among the wildest since the first one was played in 1882.

Under captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum, whose nickname is “Baz,” England has gone all-out attack and won 12 of its last 17 tests. Always chasing a win — even at the risk of losing — England have not been defeated in a series over the past year. It’s a remarkable turnaround in form for a national team which had won just one of its previous 17 Tests before the Stokes-McCullum partnership was formed.

It has reached the stage where England’s players will chase quick runs and fast wickets or adopt aggressive field placings whether they’re playing a cricket minnow or the world champion.

In Australia, they are taking on just that: The newly crowned world Test champion.

And the message from the Australians, who beat India in the World Test Championship final at Lord’s on Sunday? Bring it on.

R Ashwin was left out of India’s playing XI for the World Test Championship (WTC) final despite being the top-ranked bowler. Instead, India went in with four seamers and Ravindra Jadeja as the solitary spinner. The decision came back to hurt the team as Australia won by 209 runs with the Aussie off-spinner Nathan Lyon playing a crucial role on Day 5.

The team selection created quite a stir with Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar voicing their disappointment.

Speaking for the first time since the WTC final, Ashwin said the omission was a “stumbling block” and not a “setback” in his career.

“For me, it’s not a setback,” Ashwin told the Indian Express and Hindu. “It’s just a stumbling block, I’ll move on because I have gone through that. When somebody knocks you down for the first time, you have a knee-jerk reaction. I think you should be knocked down once in a while along your life so that you are used to it and will know how to bounce back. That’s what life is. Whether you are at your peak or not, it is still a setback. The fact that you need to learn how to deal with it is very important.

“I would have loved to play because I have played a part in us getting there. Even in the last final I got four wickets and bowled really well. Ever since 2018-19, my bowling overseas has been fantastic and I have managed to win games for the team. I am looking at it as a captain or coach and I’m just talking in hindsight, in their defence. So the last time when we were in England, it was 2-2 with a drawn Test and they would have felt four pacers and one spinner is the combination in England. That is what they might have thought going into the final. The problem is for a spinner to come into play, it must be the fourth innings. The fourth innings is a very crucial facet and for us to be able to put that amount of runs so the spinner can come into play, it’s completely a mindset thing.

“To look inwards and say ‘okay, somebody is judging me’ is foolishness. I think I’m not at the stage of my career to think what others are thinking of me. I know what I am capable of. If I’m not good at something, I’ll be my first best critic. And I will work on it and I’m not someone who will sit on my laurels. I’ve never been made that way. So to think of who’s judging me is immaterial.”

Ashwin last played a Test in England in 2021, the first WTC final against New Zealand, and took two wickets in each innings to finish with 4/45. Overall, he has featured in seven Tests in England taking 18 wickets in 11 innings. However, when India last played a Test series in England, he was benched for all five matches. During that series, too, India went with four seamers and a spinner approach.

For the WTC final this time, Ashwin said he was aware of being axed 48 hours before the game started. However, the 36-year-old said he is “chilled” and “relaxed” at this stage of his career.

“I’m a lot more chilled than I used to be,” he said. “A lot more relaxed in my life than I ever have been. Sitting here today, I realise how much of a toll it had taken on me mentally to the point where I was traumatised. But I am very glad to have come through that and discovered a new me.

“A lot of people marketed me and positioned me that I am an overthinker. A person who will get 15-20 matches on the go doesn’t have to be mentally overthinking. A person who knows that they will get only two games will be traumatised and will be overthinking because it’s my job. It’s my journey. So this is what suits me.”

Four months since stepping down from his role at the BCCI following a sting operation, former India cricketer Chetan Sharma was wearing the selector’s hat once again, this time for North Zone for the upcoming Duleep Trophy.

According to an exclusive report on News18 Cricketnext, the meeting was convened by veteran cricket administrator Anirudh Chaudhary and was attended by the representatives of the member associations comprising North Zone.

Sharma attended the meeting as a representative of the Haryana Cricket Association (HCA), and was asked to chair the meeting on the basis of his seniority.

“According to the BCCI constitution, every state association can nominate its representative for the zonal selection meeting. Haryana chose to nominate Chetan Sharma and he chaired the meeting since he was the senior most of the lot,” Chaudhary, a former treasurer with the BCCI, said.

Chaudhary added that Sharma’s presence in the meeting added “weight and perspective” to the discussion.

“His presence today was invaluable. Him being a former national chairman of selector added so much weight and perspective to the discussion. He has already seen these players from close quarters and added so many good inputs. He had attended the meeting last year too but that was in the capacity of BCCI selector.

“I can add that it was probably one of the most fruitful meetings I have been part of and everything was done so professionally and amicably. The team which you see, which I can well say looks very strong, has been picked on merit and all selectors were on the same page. The intention was to assemble a squad which goes on to win the title and I hope we do that,” Chaudhary added.

Sharma had been retained as chief selector in January earlier this year but was forced to step down a month later following his ‘loose talk’ in the sting operation, in which he made a series of startling revelations on many topics including the breakdown in relations between Sourav Ganguly and Virat Kohli and how players take injections to pass fitness tests.
