After the unprecedented response through the first four weeks, JioCinema released 360-degree viewing feature to delight fans, showcasing the power of immersive fan engagement on digital,” added the release.

CSK were crowned IPL champions for a record-equalling fifth time, after Ravindra Jadeja’s last-over heroics helped them chase down 171 in 15 overs, as the match was later shortened due to rain.

The final, that was supposed to be held on 28 May but that entire day was washed out due to rain, began on 29 May, Monday. CSK won the toss and opted to field on the reserve day. Sai Sudharsan’s 96 led GT to 214/4 from 20 overs. But, just three balls into CSK’s case, rain played spoilsport yet again, and the chase was shortened, and target revised following resumption after more than an hour.

Devon Conway scored 47 while vital cameos from Ambati Rayudu (19) and Jadeja (15*) helped CSK cross the finish line. Shivam Dube remained unbeaten on 32.

‘Clinical’ and ‘consistent’ are two words to describe the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) side that lifted the Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy, under MS Dhoni. Again. Gujarat Titans (GT) were in it till the very last ball but Ravindra Jadeja magic broke their hearts, and sent Chennai into celebration mode.

With the season done and dusted, let’s now take a look at what worked and what did not for CSK this season.

What worked for CSK?

The openers. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway were a formidable pair throughout the season. The duo consistently kept scoring fifties, and together they combined for a partnership of 849 runs this season, becoming the most successful CSK duo in a single edition of the IPL.

Gaikwad and Conway shared 10 half-centuries between them, with the New Zealander scoring a majority of them, with six. Four of those came in consecutive games for Conway, who finished the season with 672 runs.

Gaikwad, meanwhile, aggregated 590 runs from 16 matches, at  a strike-rate of 147.50.

This season, CSK’s batting depth was tested, and Shivam Dube took up the challenge with open arms. Dube kept the sixes flying, while scoring fifties on a regular basis, and also helping CSK finish the games. On occasions he could not finish the games, he set the platform for it.

Dube was impactful in those middle overs throughout the tournament, so much so that he recorded the second-most maximums in IPL 2023 (35), only one behind Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Faf du Plessis (36).

One of the major highlights for Dube in IPL 2023 was his 27-ball 52 against RCB, but his 21-ball 32 against GT in the final will live in the minds of millions of CSK fans.

Deepak Chahar’s comeback

Comebacks are never easy, but in IPL 2023, Deepak Chahar made it look so.

Chahar, who had missed last season’s IPL with a back injury, suffered an injury scare early in IPL 2023 as well, sustaining a hamstring injury during their game against Mumbai Indians (MI) on 8 April.

He returned to action against Lucknow Super Giants in early May, and ended up conceding 41 runs without taking a wicket.

However, sometimes what follows a setback is a comeback. And that was exactly the case with the 30-year-old.

13 wickets from six games, towards the end of the tournament, certainly put Deepak Chahar’s campaign back on track.

“Mentally it’s very tough. I had two major injuries which are critical for a fast bowler. Other pacers are also struggling with a stress fracture in the back. It takes a long time to recover from. When you start playing it takes time to get back to your best so it takes time mentally and physically, and I’m getting there slowly,” Chahar told The Indian Express in April.

The highlight of Chahar’s second half of the season was his three-fers in consecutive games, against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Delhi Capitals (DC).

Against KKR, Chahar looked in top form. All three of his wickets came in the powerplay, but eventually CSK failed to defend their total of 144.

Against DC, though, it was getting rid of two of those biggest middle-order batters in Phil Salt and Rilee Rossouw. And Chahar removed both off consecutive balls in the fifth over.

Ever since the reverse fixture against MI in Chennai in May, the only occasion when the right-arm medium pacer conceded runs in excess of 30, was in the final, when he went for 38 while taking the wicket of Saha.

Where did CSK go wrong?

No-balls. Early on in the season, it was the no-balls that hurt the now five-time champions. Tushar Deshpande finished as CSK’s top wicket-taker with 21 scalps, but early on it was just not easy for the Maharashtra bowler. Against LSG in Chennai, where CSK emerged victorious, extras were a major concern. With Lucknow looking to chase CSK’s total of 217, there was scope for a much disciplined bowling, but the Yellow Brigade conceded 18 extras. Three no balls, 13 wides and the remaining were extras.

In his four overs, Deshpande had conceded seven of the 18 extras. In the first over, Deshpande bowled a total of 11 balls, which had three wides and two no-balls.

And with LSG needing 28 off six deliveries, Deshpande once again began with a wide, that was followed by a costly no-ball. However, as lucky as Chennai and Deshpande could get, Lucknow failed to capitalise on the freebies.

Fast forward to the final, Deshpande’s bowling would come under scanner, despite the win. He went for 56 runs in just four overs, without taking a wicket. He has been consistently hit for runs throughout the season, and went onto finish the IPL by giving away a mammoth 564 runs, the most in the history of IPL.

Chennai Super Kings final finish: Champions

Chennai Super Kings most runs in IPL 2023: Devon Conway (672 runs)

Chennai Super Kings most wickets in IPL 2023: Tushar Deshpande (21 wickets)

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) once again displayed why they are one of the best teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL), as they defeated Gujarat Titans (GT) by five-wickets in a rain-shortened final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, in the early hours of Tuesday (30 May).

This was CSK’s fifth IPL title, equalling the record set by their El Clasico rivals Mumbai Indians (MI).

Earlier, CSK won the toss and opted to field first. Both Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha got off to a brisk start, forging 67 runs for the first wicket before Ravindra Jadeja dismissed the in-form Shubman for 39. Shubman, who was earlier, dropped by Deepak Chahar, fell victim to an impressive MS Dhoni stumping after facing a deceptive spinning delivery against Jadeja.

However, Shubman’s dismissal was no problem for the defending champions. In came Sai Sudharsan at number three, who would go onto play an aggressive knock of 96 off just 47 deliveries. Once Gill was dismissed, Sudharsan took the responsibility to lead the team from the front, and help them post 214/4 from 20 overs.

Sudharsan was involved in a 64-run stand with Wriddhiman Saha and an 81-run partnership with Hardik Pandya, as he gave the CSK bowlers a tough time in the middle.

Sudharsan was finally dismissed by Matheesha Pathirana, one of CSK’s most influential bowlers this season. It was just short of a yorker from the Sri Lankan, Sudharsan tried to play it across the line, but the ball went onto ping the front pad, and eventually hit in front of middle stump, as the tracker displayed.

CSK were handed a mammoth target of 215 from 20 overs, but just three balls into their chase, rain played spoilsport just like on Sunday, and the players were forced off the field. The match was halted for more than an hour due to rain, and later a wet outfield, but play restarted at 12.10 am IST with a revised target of 171 from 15 overs.

Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway, whose combined partnership runs read 775 before this match, opened in some fashion, forging 74 runs for the first wicket.

Noor Ahmad struck twice in the seventh over, removing both the openers in a span of three deliveries.

Shivam Dube and Ajinkya Rahane forged 39 off 23 deliveries for the third wicket to revive hopes, but Rahane fell to Mohit Sharma, after a 13-ball cameo of 27.

Dube, who has had quite a productive season with the bat, continued doing what he does best-slamming sixes, as he hit a couple of maximums off Rashid Khan in the 12th over.

Ambati Rayudu, playing his final match of his IPL career, played a short but sweet cameo of  19 off eight balls that included one four and two sixes, but it was MS Dhoni’s golden duck that eventually silenced the crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Mohit Sharma was the one once again, who this time got the wicket of CSK skipper, with a full delivery on off. Dhoni was looking for the straight drive, but he eventually was caught by David Miller at short extra cover.

With 21 runs needed off 12 balls, Jadeja joined Dube in the middle. Mohammed Shami was brought to bowl the 14th over, and did well to give away eight off the over, with just one boundary in it.

Mohit Sharma, with three wickets to his name, bowled the final over, with CSK needing 13. He began with a perfect yorker to Dube, which the latter could do nothing much about, and followed it up with yet another brilliant yorker where Dube collected just a single.

The equation was down to 10 runs off two balls, and the onus relied on Jadeja. Jadeja, man for the major moments, then followed it up with a maximum, launched towards long on to bring the equation further down to four off one ball.

In the final ball, Jadeja miraculously finished things for CSK, finishing with a four towards the left of the short fine boundary.

The IPL 2023 final between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Gujarat Titans (GT) will now be played on Monday after rain forced a postponement from the original schedule of Sunday. It’s the first time in 16 editions of IPL that a final will be played on the reserve day.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

The weather predictions said a 20% percent chance of rain in Ahmedabad on Sunday, however, the rain gods had something else in their mind.

First, the opening ceremony, which was scheduled at 6 PM IST, was postponed before the toss at 7 PM IST got delayed. Regular showers did not allow the game to start and after the 9.35 PM IST cut-off time, the match started losing overs.

There were a few instances when the rain weakened and the crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium hoped that there could be an IPL final on Sunday, but every time things started to improve, the rain dampened it by returning with more intensity.

Eventually, the match was postponed just moments before 11 PM.

What if rain interrupts the IPL final on Monday?

The weather forecast for Monday in Ahmedabad is “sunny to partly cloudy” and the chances of a thunderstorm are zero. But just in case, the rain defies the odds again, here are the all possible scenarios:

The cut-off for a full 20-over game to take place is 9.35 PM IST. After which the game will start losing overs.

The cut-off time for a 5-over match is 12.06 am on Tuesday (30 May).

A Super Over will be held if a 5-over match is not possible and it can start as late as 12.50 am.

If nothing is possible then Gujarat Titans will be declared the IPL 2023 champions as they finished ahead of Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2023 points table. GT won 10 matches in the league phase and collected 20 points to top the table, while Chennai amassed 17 points to come second.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

At the Narendra Modi Stadium, it came pouring down at around 6.30 pm IST, just half an hour before the scheduled time for toss. However, the toss was eventually delayed and for the spectators who came out in large numbers to cheer for their favourite team, it was a rather long and frustrating wait.

There were short intervals when the rain relented, and that allowed umpires to have a look at the ground. However, just when there was a slight glimpse of hope for a positive outcome, rain made its arrival once again and refused to stop.

Despite the rain receding later, there were still puddles on the field, and that meant that the game would be postponed by a day to Monday. The umpires confirmed the official word at 10.55 pm IST.

From playing conditions to match timing, here’s all you need to know about the rescheduled IPL final:

The rescheduled IPL 2023 Final between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Gujarat Titans (GT) will start at 7.30 pm IST, with the toss at 7 pm.

The cut-off time for a five-over match is 12.06 am on Tuesday (30 May), and should that also fail to happen, then there will be the Super Over that can start as late as 12.50 am.

Should no cricketing action take place on Monday, GT, the higher-ranked team in the IPL standings among the two teams, will be crowned IPL 2023 champions.

23:38 (IST)

That brings us to the end of our live coverage of Day 1 (a term rarely used in all of white-ball cricket, let alone the IPL) of the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) between Chennai Super Kings and defending champions Gujarat Titans, with incessant rain at the Narendra Modi Stadium ensuring the action gets shifted to the reserve day that is Monday, 29 May.

The playing conditions remain the same for tomorrow with toss taking place at the usual 7 pm and play starting half-an-hour later. Let’s hope we get to witness a full 20-over contest between the two top sides. The 16th edition, after all, has been one of the most riveting editions in the history of the IPL, and deserves a proper send-off.

This is Amit bidding you all good night for now. See you all tomorrow!

23:26 (IST)

Here's the official announcement from the organisers that flashed on the giant screen at the Narendra Modi Stadium around 11 pm local time confirming the IPL 2023 final getting moved to the reserve day.

23:16 (IST)

Playing conditions for tomorrow

 — Match to start at 7.30 pm as usual with toss at 7 pm local time.

— Should rain make its way back to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad tomorrow evening, the match officials will follow the same cut-off timings — 9.35 pm for a full 20-over contest, 12.06 am the following day for a five-overs-a-side contest.

— In case the final gets washed out tomorrow as well, Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans will be declared joint-winnners, something that has never happened in the IPL in the past and has happened only once in major ICC events — in the 2002 Champions Trophy final between India and Sri Lanka.

Umpires Nitin Menon and Rod Tucker on the rain delay in a chat with Star Sports:

Nitin Menon: Conditions were quite good. Very surprised that even after three hours of rain, the ground will do very good. We were quite hopeful that we will have a game tonight, but unfortunately it rained again, so let’s see. We’ll try to push as far as possible tonight.

Rod Tucker: 12.06 is the latest time we can start. The ground will give us an hour to mop up if it stops. So if it’s still raining at 11 o’clock, we’re in a lot of trouble.

Pitch report by Simon Doull and Matthew Hayden

"We are right in the center of the stadium, 66m away to the leg-side, 66 away to the off-side. Some big pockets, 73, 72, and 74, and downtown it is 74 as well. I believe it is a bat-first condition in finals, there might be a few overhead conditions that might change the mind of the captains at the toss. There are not a lot of turns here, but maybe, through the middle, these world-class spinners get a little grip as well.

"Bat first, if you really do, you gotta go really big, so 180-190 should probably be a par score. This wicket hasn’t been really quite as good as no. 7, this is the no. 6, it hasn’t produced quite the numbers, but if you bat first, bat well, do the job right, and you might be good enough"

Shubman Gill Record Alert

Shubman Gill is on the verge of going level with Virat Kohli and Jos Buttler for most centuries in Indian Premier League. Both Kohli and Buttler had collected four centuries each in 2016 and 2022 respectively. Gill, who had not gone past the 100-mark in 86 outings since making his debut in 2018, has collected three centuries in his last four outings, and could become the joint-record-holder if he scores one more tonight.

He also needs another 123 runs to break Virat Kohli's all-time record for most runs in a single IPL season. Kohli had collected 973 runs in 2016 while Gill's tally this season stands at 851 ahead of the final.

IPL Final 2023 CSK vs GT Highlights: ITS OFFICIAL! The 2023 Indian Premier League Final becomes the first to be moved to a Reserve Day due to incessant rain! The heavy shower that has played hide-and-seek all evening at the Narendra Modi Stadium just doesn’t relent, and ends up playing a spoilsport today!

IPL Final 2023 CSK vs GT Preview: The grand finale of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 is here! MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings (CSK) face off against Hardik Pandya’s Gujarat Titans (GT) on Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. It seems like the defending champions have a slight edge going into the final as it is being played in their own backyard but the last time CSK came to Ahmedabad, the stands in the stadium witnessed a sea of yellow. Hence, it’s impossible to say which team will have the fans’ support during the IPL final 2023.

Talking about the fans, there will be some special events for them during the closing ceremony which will start at 6 PM IST. DJ Nucleya and rapper King will perform at the event while rapper Divine and singer Jonita Gandhi are scheduled to perform in the mid-innings break.

Coming to the match. Gujarat Titans have a 3-1 edge over Chennai Super Kings in the head-to-head corner and have been the best side in IPL 2023, having won 10 out of 14 league games and finishing on the top of the points table. They also dismantled Mumbai Indians (MI) by 62 runs in the Qualifier 2 to gain an entry into a second consecutive final in their first two seasons in the league — an IPL record.

But, GT’s only defeat to CSK came in the last between the two sides in Qualifier 1 when Dhoni and Co emerged winners by 15 runs. Earlier in the season, in fact, in the opener, GT had defeated CSK by five wickets.

Adding more intrigue to the contest is the fact that both the teams are based on similar philosophies, where the focus is on creating the best combination and then allowing them to perform to their best with the help of support and motivation. This philosophy has worked wonders for both the franchises.

CSK are in their 10th IPL final — the only IPL team to do so — and GT are always on the verge of becoming the first team to win two consecutive titles in their first two seasons.

Talking about their strengths. CSK relies heavily on opener Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad to get the runs. The duo has accumulated 775 runs together, While opener Shubman Gill has smashed 851 runs alone this season for GT. Gujarat also have Mohammed Shami, Rashid Khan and Mohit Sharma in their ranks — the three highest wicket-takers this season.

In this context, Gujarat Titans do look a bit stronger than Chennai Super Kings but IPL has never conformed to such equations.

IPL final, CKS vs GT live streaming: The closing ceremony will start at 6 PM IST while the match will start at 7.30 PM, Both events will be live streamed on the JioCinema app and website and TV telecast will be available on Star Sports Network.

After 73 matches and almost two-month of thrilling action, the stage is set for the grand IPL Final 2023 with the tournament coming full circle as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) take on Gujarat Titans (GT) in the summit clash on Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

On 31 March, it was GT and CSK at the same stadium who began the 2023 edition.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

In that game, it was Hardik Pandya’s Gujarat who had the last laugh winning by five wickets. CSK had their revenge with a 15-run win over GT in Qualifier 1 as MS Dhoni’s side qualified for a record 10th IPL final.

On Sunday, the two teams will meet for their third clash of the season with the coveted trophy at the stake

CSK’s incredible consistency

Chennai Super Kings have won four IPL titles in the past, one less than record champions Mumbai Indians. Besides four title victories, CSK have been in the final nine times. Sunday’s final will be their 10th.

Captain Dhoni has featured in 10 IPL finals already.

Such mind-boggling consistency is what has set them apart from every other team in IPL.

However, the last season was a sad story with a ninth-placed finish.

The biggest factors behind the rise in 2023 have been the regular fundamentals of their success — belief in their abilities and support to their players.

Openers Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad have scored 775 runs together this season. Tushar Deshpande has 21 wickets, Ravindra Jadeja has picked 19 while Matheesha Pathirana has 17 scalps in just 11 games.

IPL Final 2023, CSK vs GT: All you need to know

All these players were part of the setup last year as well. But despite the failure of 2022, Dhoni and CSK didn’t panic. They backed their players and now here they are in the final.

GT the new consistency kings

Gujarat Titians are of course aiming for history. They want to become the first team to win two IPL trophies in their first two years. They already hold the record of being the first team to reach consecutive finals in its first two seasons.

While the sample size is only two seasons big, the consistency shown by Gujarat is almost unprecedented.

In some ways, they are threatening to take away the tag of ‘kings of consistency’ from CSK.

The fundamentals for GT’s success this season have been their bowling. Mohammed Shami (28), Rashid Khan (27) and Mohit Sharma (24) lead the wicket-takers list for the season.

IPL Final 2023: CSK, the Kings of consistency

Shubman Gill leads the run-getters chart with 851 runs.

GT did the hard work in the auction by picking a well-rounded squad and skipper Hardik and coach Ashish Nehra have created an environment that enables them to give their best, every time.

In many ways, it’s a fight between teams with similar philosophies and that makes predicting a winner that much more difficult.

CSK vs GT Form guide (last five matches)

Gujarat: WLWWL
Chennai: WWLWW

Ahmedabad pitch and weather report:

The average first-innings score at the Narendra Modi Stadium is 193 this season with five matches being won by team batting first. It’s a paradise for batters and both teams will look to bat first.

It will be cloudy in Ahmedabad on Sunday but rain should not hamper the game much.

CSK vs GT likely playing XIIs

CSK: Devon Conway, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ajinkya Rahane, Shivam Dube, Ambati Rayudu, Moeen Ali, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (C), Deepak Chahar, Tushar Deshpande, Maheesh Theekshana, Matheesha Pathirana

GT: Shubman Gill, Wriddhiman Saha, Sai Sudarshan, Hardik Pandya (C), Vijay Shankar, David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad, Mohammed Shami, Mohit Sharma, Josh Little

The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah on Saturday said that the venues and schedule for the ODI World Cup slated to be held in India later this year would be announced on the sidelines of the World Test Championship (WTC) in London. India are set to play Australia in the WTC Final at The Oval in London, from 7 June.

“Press conference will happen and it will happen in London around the World Test Championship final. The complete schedule for the tournament will also be revealed,” Shah was quoted as saying after the BCCI SGM in Ahmedabad, as per a report in News18.

“The venue list has been prepared but not finalised yet. We have kept options for three-four venues. So will be finalising them soon. Metro cities will be preferred venues and we can’t really ignore them,” Shah added.

There was, however, nothing on Pakistan’s participation in the World Cup. Wasim Khan, the ICC General Manager, had said in March that Pakistan could play their matches at a neutral venue. However, cricket’s global governing body denied that and as per a board official, the Narendra Modiv Stadium in Ahmedabad would host that game, with Chennai as a backup venue.

“India vs Pakistan will happen. Narendra Modi Stadium is likely to host that game and Chennai is also kept as a backup for the marquee clash,” said the source.

The BCCI are also aiming at improving stadium facilities. Venues like Ahmedabad and Lucknow are upto standards, but work needs to be done at some of the other venues.

“There is money coming into the BCCI but facilities in some stadiums are not up to the mark. Ahmedabad, Dharamsala, Indore, Lucknow are some of the well-maintained stadiums but we need to get the other stadiums at par to these too,” said Shah.

“We have also taken GT (Grant Thornton International) on board who will deal with 15 stadiums initially and after that we will expand. They have already given us report on 16 stadiums and will then address 15 more stadiums. First priority will be World Cup venues, after the list is decided, and then we will move to other venues,” added Shah.

In the second over of MI's chase, Hardik Pandya's pace delivery got hit at Cameron Green's elbow and he was retired hurt at 4

There’s dominance, there’s utter dominance and then there’s Shubman Gill. Considered as one of the ‘next big things’ in Indian cricket when the team won the 2018 U19 World Cup, 23-year-old Shubman has over the last year or so taken the cricketing world by storm.

Fast forward to 2023, Gill has earned not just the fans’ adulation but that of the cricketing fraternity.

Gill, who plays for Gujarat Titans (GT), has been consistent with the bat in this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL), but for a player like Gill, along with consistency comes pure dominance.

And he showcased that in GT’s Qualifier 2 win over Mumbai Indians (MI) in Ahmedabad on Friday, a match where he demolished the opposition bowlers with a 60-ball 129.

On Friday, Gill went all out from the word go, but what made his innings a treat to watch was the way he balanced between being aggressive and rotating strike.

Gill kick-started his innings in a composed manner. At first, barring a couple of boundaries in the first five overs, Gill dealt with rotating strike by taking the ones and two. And in the final over of the powerplay, Gill hit Chris Jordan over square leg for a six, and that was followed by a four through the covers in the very next ball.

It was in the same over Gill received a crucial lifeline. Only into his 30s, Tim David at mid-on dropped a catch, despite diving to his right and getting both hands on it. But, for David, that chance went begging after the ball hit his wrist and eventually failed to get hold of the catch.

Had Gill been caught by David, the script of this contest could have completely changed, and maybe, just maybe, the MI bowlers could have had much more say.

While Gill kept playing the balancing act of scoring boundaries and taking ones/twos, it was not until the 12th over when the Punjab-born cricketer finally played the role of an aggressor.

In the 12th over, Gill was facing Akash Madhwal, Player of the Match in MI’s win over Lucknow Super Giants. Madhwal, who had taken 5/5, was certainly a threat. But not for Gill.

Madhwal began the over with a fuller-length ball on the pads, and Gill made it look so easy, unleashing over the square leg in his own fashion.

Next one was a short ball outside off from Madhwal, and Gill, with his near flawless batting, launched over the midwicket for another maximum.

Gill then cleared midwicket for another six in the fifth ball of the over, but he was in no mood to stop just yet.

It was almost like a highlights show, with Gill hitting all over the park as if the stadium belonged exclusively to him.

But for MI, it seemed as though they were in some sort of time loop. No matter what tactic they tried, the same thing kept happening over and over again.

What caught the eye of many was Gill’s 106-metre six in the 13th over bowled by Piyush Chawla. On this occasion, Gill went down the track, and hoicked over long-on for a maximum that helped him go past the 90s.

Gill brought up his century off 49 deliveries with a single towards long on, but piled misery on Cameron Green, who was bowling that over.

Gill began the third ball of the over with six and a four, and followed it up with another maximum, a pull over wide long-on.

To put into simple words, Gill was an absolute beast. Almost as if he was in a league of his own.

Gill was eventually dismissed by Madhwal, with Gill having holed out to Tim David at deep midwicket. Even at this point, it was evident on Gill’s face that he just was not willing to stop.

It was only more fitting that Gill walked back to a standing ovation from the Ahmedabad crowd. Just one of those things you love to see.

MI’s chase, and the Suryakumar resistance

Not all was well in the MI camp midway through the match. Rohit Sharma hurt his hand while fielding, and Ishan Kishan accidentally collided with Chris Jordan. During the final few overs of GT’s innings, Rohit left the field and was seen applying ice on his left hand.

Kishan’s injury, though, appeared to be more serious than Rohit’s after the former failed to walk out and bat. Vishnu Vinod replaced him as a concussion substitute, while Nehal Wadhera opened the innings.

Cameron Green, too, was hit on the elbow and appeared to be in discomfort during his  batting. And although he was “retired hurt” following his injury, the Aussie later returned to bat, following Tilak Varma’s dismissal.

Green scored 30, but it was Suryakumar Yadav who kept MI’s smallest of chances alive. While SKY contributed 50-run stands with both Tilak Varma and Green, with Vishnu Vinod (5), it seemed as though almost the entire responsibility of getting the big runs fell on him.

SKY kept collecting the boundaries at regular intervals, and eventually got to his fifty with a scoop shot over short fine and into the stands for a six.

Scoop shots are a thing for Suryakumar Yadav, but not every time things go your way. In fact, Suryakumar was dismissed after attempting a scoop shot while facing Mohit Sharma.

Mohit came up with a full delivery at the stumps to SKY in the 15th over, and it was that same scoop shot over short fine that Suryakumar tried, but this time fell victim to a dismissal, as the ball eventually took out the leg stump.

After Suryakumar’s dismissal, MI’s chase was never the same. From 155/5, the five-time champions were bundled out for 171, with Mohit Sharma (5/10), GT’s Man of the Moment, playing a huge part.

Mohammed Shami impactful in powerplay

GT’s bowling has been near-perfect this season, and part of that is due to Mohammed Shami’s impactful role in the powerplay.

Shami, currently the Purple Cap holder with 28 wickets, struck early twice in MI’s chase. His first was as early as the first over, when he got rid of Nehal Wadhera, who was looking for a pull shot but nicked away to Saha.

Shami’s second victim was MI skipper Rohit Sharma. Rohit, too, was looking to play the pull shot, and eventually got a top edge. Josh Little came down from fine leg and took the catch to complete the dismissal.

With these dismissals, Shami’s wickets tally in powerplay in IPL 2023 surged to 17, with the other 11 wickets of his coming outside the first six overs.

For GT, IPL means serious business. With an in-form Shubman Gill in their ranks and some top-notch bowlers like Shami and Rashid Khan, GT have arguably been the most clinical side in the league this season. In fact, GT have been the team to beat. But CSK, under Dhoni, will pose a different threat altogether for GT in the final.

Gujarat Titans opener Shubman Gill rated his blazing 129 off 60 balls against Mumbai Indians on Friday as his best knock in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

Gill tore the Mumbai attack to shreds, smashing 10 sixes and seven fours to power Gujarat to a humongous score of 233/3 after they were asked to bat. MI, in reply, were shot out for 171 with Mohit Sharma collecting his career-best limited-overs figures of 5/10 to power GT to a second consecutive final since making their debut last season.

The Punjab batter had not crossed the three-figure mark in 86 IPL matches since making his debut with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2018, but now has three to his name in his last four outings, all of which have resulted in victories for Gujarat.

“I think this was probably my best innings so far in the IPL,” Gill said during the post-match presentation.

Read | Gill hailed by Kohli, ABD after blistering 129 against MI in Qualifier 2

Gill pointed to the over in which he carted Akash Madhwal, hero of MI’s 81-run victory over Lucknow Super Giants in the Eliminator with a haul of 5/5, for three sixes that instilled belief in him that it was his day.

“For me, it is playing ball to ball, over to over. The over where I hit three sixes gave me the momentum to go big. That’s when I realised it could be my day.

“It was a good wicket to bat on as well. Not a conscious decision, you keep inventing as a batter but for me the belief is more important. I am coming off a good international season as well. Had a good season last time as well. When I start well, I feel confident I can score well,” Gill added.

Hope Gill continues that form: Rohit

Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma heaped praise on the 23-year-old, viewed by many as the next Indian batting superstar and the heir-apparent to Virat Kohli, after the game.

According to ‘Hitman’, Gill’s 129 proved to be the difference between the two sides in the penultimate match of the season and ultimately helped Gujarat add another “20-25 extra runs” on the board. He also hoped Gill would continue this form for the Indian team as well with the ODI World Cup set to take place in India later this year.

“Shubman batted well, wicket was good. They got 20-25 extra. We were positive after the first-half. We have to credit Shubman. I hope he continues that form,” Rohit said after the game.

In Photos: All-round GT trounce MI to setup final against CSK

Rohit credited Suryakumar Yadav (61) and Cameron Green (30) for reviving Mumbai’s hopes after a poor start to their chase, but felt they needed someone to take the game deep like Gill did for them to pull off the chase successfully, which they ultimately failed to accomplish.

“Greeny and Surya batted well but we lost our way. We wanted to give it a good crack, be positive. We couldn’t get going in the powerplay. We wanted one batter, like Gujarat did, and take the game deep where anything can happen on a good pitch and a ground with a small boundary. But credit to GT, who played well,” added the MI skipper.

GT skipper Hardik Pandya, meanwhile, couldn’t be more proud of the way Gill conducted himself at the Narendra Modi Stadium on the big occasion.

“I think the clarity and confidence he is carrying is amazing. Today’s innings was one of the finest, he never looked rushed. It felt like someone was throwing balls and he was hitting. He will be a superstar in international and franchise cricket,” Pandya added after the game.

Mumbai Indians (MI) all-rounder Cameron Green feels the five-time champions are peaking at the right time in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) as they gear up for a high-octane Qualifier 2 against defending champions Gujarat Titans.

Green’s comments came after MI outplayed Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by 81 runs in the Eliminator at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium on Wednesday.

Green top-scored for Mumbai with a 23-ball 41 at Chepauk although Akash Madhwal later played a central role in the victory with a sensational haul of 5/5, bundling Lucknow out for a paltry 101 after they were set 183 to win.

The Western Australian cricketer, who had been bought by the franchise for a whopping Rs 17.5 crore in the player auction, added that the newcomers in the squad had been warned about MI being perennial slow starters, and that they always found a way to catch up in the later stages of the tournament.

“Obviously, all experience that he (Rohit) has got for India and in IPL, he kind of knows. I think MI never won the first game of IPL and he tries to mention that to us,” Green told Star Sports after the Eliminator.

“We obviously had a slow kind of start but you want to obviously start peaking at this time of the year, you don’t want to be playing good cricket and slowing down now but peaking at right time,” the giant Australian, who has scored 262 runs and taken six wickets,” he added.

Mumbai face a stiff challenge on Friday against the Titans, led by former MI all-rounder Hardik Pandya in Qualifier 2, given they will be facing the current title holders in their own backyard, i.e. the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The winner of that contest then progresses to the final, also hosted in Ahmedabad, where they will face four-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Green described GT as a “tough team” that has all its bases covered.

“They have been best side all tournament, may be a bit of slip up against CSK but they are the best side and they have everything covered — opening batters are flying and spin twins (Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmed) have been hard to get away. They are a tough team but we will go there with all optimism,” Green added.

Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma lavished praise on Akash Madhwal and said he had full faith in his skillset after the young pacer starred in a commanding victory over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Chennai on Thursday.

Madhwal played a central role MI’s massive 81-run win over LSG with a brilliant haul of 5/5, bundling them out for a paltry 101 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. This was after Mumbai posted a competitive score of 182/8 after opting to bat with Cameron Green (41 off 23) once again top-scoring for this side.

Madhwal, who drew first blood by dismissing Prerak Mankad in his first over, turned the game on its head by dismissing Ayush Badoni and Nicholas Pooran in successive deliveries, allowing Mumbai to set one foot in Qualifier 2. He would then remove Ravi Bishnoi and Mohsin Khan to become the first bowler in IPL history to collect a five-for in the playoffs.

“That is what we have done over the years. People don’t expect us to do what we have done, but we managed to,” a pleased Rohit said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

“He (Akash) was the part of the team last year as a support bowler, and once Jofra (Archer) was gone and I knew he had skills and the character to do the job for us,” Mumbai skipper Rohit said during the post-match presentation ceremony.

Rohit also emphasised on the importance of maintaining a relaxed atmosphere in the dressing room to allow relatively unheralded members of the squad such as Madhwal to develop a bond with the veterans and consequently, express themselves more freely on the field.

“Over the years, we have seen many guys coming in from Mumbai Indians and playing for India. It is important to make them (youngsters) feel special and make them feel part of the team, my job is to just make them comfortable in the middle.

“They (youngsters like Madhwal) are very clear in their roles about what they need to do for the team and that’s what you want,” Rohit added.

‘Engineers have a tendency to learn quickly’

Madhwal, who had collected his maiden four-fer (4/37) in Mumbai’s previous game, against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, made light-hearted comments about practising his game while studying engineering.

“I was just practising, and waiting for this opportunity. I did my engineering, and played tennis-ball cricket since it was my passion. Engineers have a tendency to learn quickly,” the Roorkee native said.

“I just practice, and that is what we execute. I’m proud of myself, but I’ll try to be better,” added Madhwal.

The 29-year-old also was quick to brush off comparisons with India and MI pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who has been out of action since September last year due to a dodgy back.

“Bumrah bhai has his own place, and I’m just trying to play my role,” added Madhwal.
