After Mitchell Marsh on Saturday and Devon Conway earlier on Sunday, it was Yashasvi Jaiswal’s turn to produce a spectacular, match-defining contribution that would ultimately end up in a losing cause.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

While Marsh’s all-round brilliance couldn’t save Delhi Capitals from succumbing to a narrow defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad, the in-form Conway’s unbeaten 92 was ultimately overshadowed by Sikandar Raza’s final-over-heroics as Punjab Kings pipped Chennai Super Kings in a last-ball thriller.

Jaiswal, meanwhile, dished out a 62-ball 124 that not only is his first-ever century in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well as the highest individual score of the 2023 season so far, it also happens to be one of the most defining knocks in the history of the tournament.

The southpaw, after all, single-handedly took on the Mumbai attack in their own backyard, which also happens to be his home turf in domestic cricket, smashing 16 fours and eight maximums in a breathtaking display. And what made his knock all the more impressive was the fact that the rest of the batting lineup struggled against this very MI bowling unit, with Jos Buttler’s 18 off 19 deliveries the second-highest score.

Jaiswal had signalled his intention to take on the Mumbai bowlers in the powerplay, where he ended up scoring 41 of the 65 runs that RR had managed including four boundaries in a single over from Riley Meredith. From thereon, Jaiswal held the innings together even as wickets fell at regular intervals at the other end, ensuring Rajasthan’s scoring rate remained as close to 10-an-over as possible.

At no point did Jaiswal appear to be slowing down and taking the cautious route, even when he was getting close to the three-figure mark. On the contrary, he would move into the nineties with a six off a pull and would bring up his maiden IPL ton with back-to-back boundaries, getting a deserved ovation not just from the Royals dugout but also from the Wankhede crowd.

Read | Jaiswal has ‘taken it to the next level’, says MI skipper Rohit

Such was Jaiswal’s confidence on the day that he did not hesitate smashing express pacer Jofra Archer, one of quickest of the current generation, for back-to-back sixes in the penultimate over. And while he got off to a promising start with consecutive fours off Arshad in the final over, the latter had the last laugh as he induced a mishit off a high full toss that was suspiciously close to Jaiswal’s waist and collected a simple return catch. Jaiswal fell just short of batting through the innings, but did an outstanding job of guiding RR to a challenging total after opting to bat first.

SKY and David’s heroics overshadow Jaiswal’s ton

The momentum certainly was in favour of the Royals during the innings break. Additionally, a target in excess of 200 had never been chased at the Wankhede before; Mumbai had come anxiously close against Punjab Kings a few days back, but fell marginally short. And with Sandeep Sharma getting rid of Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma in the second over of the chase, it was Rajasthan’s game to lose.

The rest of the Mumbai batting lineup, though, had other plans, and would end up scripting a sensational comeback that would ultimately take the game away from the opposition.

Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan and Cameron Green, who has taken to the No 3 role like duck to water, brought Mumbai back on its feet with a 62-run second-wicket stand. And once they departed, with Green falling short of his third half-century of the season, it was time for Suryakumar Yadav to take over and dazzle the Wankhede crowd with a innings that could be described as vintage SKY knock.

Surya, who had struggled in the first few games before finally breaking the shackles in the chase against Kolkata Knight Riders, smashed eight fours and two maximums and struck at 189.66 for his 29-ball 55, a knock that wasn’t very different from his 26-ball 57 against Punjab at the same venue, both keeping Mumbai alive in a steep run chase and taking the game deep.

In Photos | Mumbai Indians pip Rajasthan Royals in high-scoring thriller

And the way he was motoring along in the middle on Sunday evening, it appeared as if SKY would single-handedly guide Mumbai home. It took a one-handed blinder by Sandeep, pedalling backwards from short fine, off Trent Boult’s bowling for his stay to come to an end.

The responsibility of finishing the game then fell on the fifth-wicket pair of Tim David and Tilak Varma, the latter going at close to run-a-ball at the time of the hard-hitting Aussie’s arrival. David didn’t waste much time in getting settled at the crease, smashing a six off his fourth ball of the evening. More importantly, David took on Sandeep, who had halted MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja’s charge in clinical style at Chepauk earlier this season, in the crucial penultimate over, smashing a six and a four in a 15-run over, leaving Mumbai 17 to win off six.

David had smashed a lively 25 off 13 deliveries that got Mumbai close to the 215-run target set by Punjab, but remained stranded at the non-striker’s end after deciding to collect a single off the first ball of the final over, and watched Arshdeep Singh smash the middle stump twice in as many balls to bowl PBKS to a 13-run win.

This time, he decided to stay on strike for the final over, and finished the job with three consecutive sixes off Jason Holder, resulting in wild celebrations in the Mumbai dugout as the five-time champions boosted their playoff hopes by returning to winning ways after two consecutive defeats.

Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma heaped praise on Rajasthan Royals opener Yashasvi Jaiswal after the latter slammed his maiden century in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Sunday.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

Jaiswal lit up the Wankhede Stadium during MI’s home game against RR — which happened to be the 1000th match in the IPL — with 16 fours and eight sixes and brought up the three-figure mark in just 53 deliveries. He was ultimately dismissed for a 62-ball 124 — the highest individual score of the season so far — and single-handedly helped Rajasthan post a formidable 212/7 on the board.

The Mumbaikar’s scintillating knock, however, would go in vain as MI ended up chasing the target down with three balls to spare thanks to a hat-trick of sixes by Tim David off Jason Holder’s bowling in the final over.

“I watched him last year, he’s taken it to the next level. I asked him ‘where did you get the power from’. He said he’s been going to the gym, that’s good for him, India and RR,” Rohit, who celebrated his 35th birthday on Monday, said during the post-match presentation ceremony.

Jaiswal, who bagged the Player of the Match award despite RR ending up on the losing side, too emphasized on maintaining a fit lifestyle.

“When I completed my century, I didn’t know whether the ball went to the boundary. So I thanked God for everything. That was the highlight. Days like this definitely can happen. I want to focus on the process and work hard, and have the belief. I have been positive and am maintaining a good, fit lifestyle which is helping,” Jaiswal said after the match.

While David provided the finishing touch with an unbeaten 45, it was Suryakumar Yadav who brought Mumbai back on its feet after a shaky start and kept them alive in the chase with a 29-ball 55, ultimately getting dismissed thanks to a brilliant catch by Sandeep Sharma.

Punjab Kings skipper Shikhar Dhawan termed his side’s four-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk as ‘very, very special’, adding that beating CSK in their own den was a big thing to do.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

It was only a couple of days back when PBKS suffered a 56-run defeat to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Mohali, but Dhawan hailed Punjab Kings’ team character.

“It feels very very special. Beating Chennai in Chennai is a very big thing. Very very pleased and that shows the great character of our side, leaving that loss behind and coming up with a fresh mindset. I was very happy with the way our bowlers bowled, we got them at the right score. They have been very consistent,” said Dhawan after the match.

Liam Livingstone scored 40 off 24 balls after PBKS were asked to chase down a target of 201, while Prabhsimran Singh (42) was also among the runs. The duo played the anchor role in the successful run chase, while Sikandar Raza scored 13 off seven balls.

“As a captain we wanted them to play more overs, Liam has got his touch back and would want him to bat more overs. Good signs that all are playing well,” Dhawan added.

MS Dhoni, the CSK skipper, felt that while they were 10-15 runs short, it was two bad overs that cost them the game.

“We need to be prepared as to what is to be done. The last few overs when we were batting, we could have gotten 10-15 more. Our bowling needed some cushion. The slower one did grip. Our batters have been putting runs consistently. I think 200 was par but we bowled two bad overs. We know the conditions well. We didn’t bowl well,” said Dhoni.

Devon Conway was named Player of the Match for his unbeaten 92, but that eventually went in vain.

While Conway credited CSK batting coach Mike Hussey, he also added that he relished batting with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ajinkya Rahane.

“I try to work as close as I can with Mike Hussey who is very experienced not only for Australia but also for CSK, he has played a lot of cricket here, along with the other players. I enjoy batting with Ruturaj and Ajinkya has got a lot of experience. When you build partnerships, it helps,” said Conway.

After briefly igniting hopes of a revival with back-to-back victories, the Delhi Capitals once again finished on the losing side with a seven-run defeat at the hands of Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

Delhi had an opportunity to move out of the bottom of the table for the first time since the early stages of IPL 2023, and certainly had momentum on their side heading into their second meeting with the SRH in less than a week, this time at their Arun Jaitley Stadium, their home turf.

The Capitals, after all, successfully defended a 145-run target against the Sunrisers on Monday earlier this week, showing great composure to dry up the scoring rate and trigger a collapse in the middle overs.

While it was the batting department that let the Sunrisers down on Monday, the same group played a key role in their seven-run victory on the weekend, albeit with a couple of tweaks to the lineup.

In Photos: SRH snap losing streak with 7-run win over DC

For starters, batting all-rounder Abhishek Sharma asserted the fact that he truly belonged to the top of the order with a slam-bang 67 off just 36 deliveries that set the tone early on. Sharma helped the ‘Orange Army’ recover from the early dismissal of Mayank Agarwal (5), his aggressive strokeplay helping the Sunrisers end the powerplay with a run-rate above 10 despite losing two wickets along the way.

Wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen, who had kept Hyderabad alive in their sub-150 chase on Monday with a 19-ball 31, arrived after skipper Aiden Markram and Harry Brook — shifted to the middle-order today — departing within a space of two deliveries, and took over once Abhishek was given the marching orders by left-arm spinner Axar Patel.

After multiple starts throughout the season, Klaasen finally managed to bring up his maiden IPL half-century while forging vital partnerships with Abdul Samad (28) and Akeal Hosein to help SRH finish within touching distance of 200 — a score that isn’t achieved at the Arun Jaitley Stadium too often.

Mitchell Marsh’s heroics go in vain

The Sunrisers might very well have posted a total in the range of 220 had it not been for the heroics of Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, who had been having a mixed season so far but appears to have saved his best for this game.

It was Marsh, after all, who had put a lid on SRH’s scoring rate after an excellent powerplay by getting rid of Markram and Brook — both of whom have wreaked havoc with the bat this season — in a double-wicket maiden.

The Western Australian’s figures at the halfway stage of the SRH innings read 2-1-4-3. Though slightly expensive after being brought back for the remainder of his spell in the death overs, Marsh ended up registering only his second four-fer in the IPL, his figures of 4/27 miles ahead of the other DC bowlers, with only Axar (4-0-29-1) coming close in terms of economy.

And it wasn’t just with the ball that Marsh shone on the day — he blasted a 39-ball 63 and stitched a solid 112-run stand with Philip Salt after skipper David Warner was dismissed for a two-ball duck. Not only did the marathon partnership help Delhi recover from the shaky start, it put them in the driver’s seat in the middle overs with the home team appearing solid favourites at 112/1 with nearly half of their overs still left.

As had been the case with the bottom-ranked franchise on multiple occasions this season, the Capitals undid all of Marsh and Salt’s hard work with yet another batting collapse in the middle overs. And all it took to trigger the slide was a spectacular catch by Mayank Markande off his own bowling to remove Salt.

Delhi would lose a wicket in each of the next two overs, Manish Pandey getting dismissed by Abhishek for 1 and Marsh becoming Akeal Hosein’s maiden IPL wicket in the 14th. Markande would strike again, removing ex-SRH batter Priyam Garg for 12 in his maiden game for DC. And by the time T Natarajan castled Sarfaraz Ahmed, Delhi ended up losing five wickets for just 36 runs in a little more than five overs.

Markande would bowl yet another stellar spell under pressure, finishing with 2/20 in his four overs, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Natarajan would keep things tidy in the death overs to ensure Delhi fell nine runs short in the end. And the gulf between the two sides might have been a lot wider had it not been for Axar blasting an unbeaten 29 off just 14 deliveries, making one wonder if Delhi made yet another tactical blunder by sending Garg and Sarfaraz ahead of the in-form all-rounder, who had bagged the Player of the Match in the victory in Hyderabad earlier this week.

Despite his team ending up on the losing side, Marsh was adjudged the Player of the Match over the likes of Abhishek and Klaasen, making his evening slightly better. And during the post-match chat, the optimist that Marsh is, he choose to focus on the positives and the road ahead instead of dwelling on Delhi’s shortcomings on the day.

“There’s a reason why the IPL is the best tournament in the world. It’s bloody hard to win games. Close games can define your season. Unfortunately we’ve been on the wrong end of a few. But our spirits are high. There’s still a long way to go in this tournament. We need to start winning but I hold a lot of belief in this group,” Marsh signed off after the game.

Skipper Aiden Markram hailed a “great team effort” from the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) after their seven-run victory over Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Saturday.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

Not only did SRH snap a three-game losing run with the narrow win at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium, they also registered their first win over DC in two years, having lost four games in a row starting with Qualifier 2 in the 2020 edition.

“It was a great team effort. It’s good to see the guys put in great efforts in the buildup to this game and good to see a nice fresh approach from the batters and some good character and good skills at the end by the bowlers too,” Markram said in the post-match presentation ceremony after the victory that took them past Mumbai Indians to the eighth spot on the points table.

Opener Abhishek Sharma (67) and wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen (53 not out) struck half-centuries, the latter collecting his first in the IPL, to power the ‘Orange Army’ to a competitive 197/6. Delhi, in reply, were in cruise control at 112/1 and appeared favourites to collect a third win in a row when a superb catch by Mayank Markande off his own bowling proved to be a game-changer.

“It was basically a case of a couple of good overs and a wicket would get us back in the game. It took something special like the catch from Mayank to get us back in the game. The bowlers showed a lot of character,” added Markram, who had led Sunrisers Eastern Cape to the title in the inaugural SA20 earlier this year.

Delhi skipper Warner rued losing wickets in a cluster in the middle overs that reduced his side to 148/6 from 112/1, which resulted in a slowdown that ultimately cost them a sixth game in eight outings this season.

“Losing by nine runs, it actually was a pretty nice wicket. Getting in and out of our overs, we were a fraction off tonight.

“We need one or two players to get 80+ scores and win games for us. We’ve been losing too many wickets throughout the middle and that’s where we’re suffering a little bit. Our senior players have to take responsibility,” Warner said after the game.

Marsh was the standout player in the 40th game of the season by a fair distance and he bagged the Player of the Match award for his 4/27 and a 39-ball 63 despite his efforts ultimately going in vain.

The Australian all-rounder, though, maintained a positive tone after the game.

“I still think there’s a lot of positives coming out of today. We’ve lost some close ones. There’s a reason why the IPL is the best tournament in the world. It’s bloody hard to win games. Close games can define your season.

“Unfortunately we’ve been on the wrong end of a few. But our spirits are high. There’s still a long way to go in this tournament. We need to start winning but I hold a lot of belief in this group,” said the Western Australian.

Lucknow Super Giants staged quite the comeback after suffering a narrow loss against defending champions Gujarat Titans, thrashing Punjab Kings by 56 runs in Mohali on Friday to jump to the second spot on the IPL 2023 points table.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

What made Lucknow’s commanding victory over Punjab even sweeter was the fact that it was the same department which let them down against Gujarat on home turf that played a key role in the lop-sided win over Punjab away. After staging a spectacular choke against the title holders last week, it was the batting department that came to the fore on Friday and bossed their opponents in style, taking the game away even before their innings was yet to arrive at its conclusion.

Skipper KL Rahul struggled to get going despite getting dropped early in his innings, and his struggle to 12 off 9 deliveries that ended with a catch to Shahrukh Khan off Kagiso Rabada’s bowling could’ve tilted the game in favour of the Kings and allowed them to seize the initiative early.

Despite Rahul’s struggles however, Lucknow managed to smash 72 runs in the powerplay, all thanks to the explosive Kyle Mayers, whose 20-ball half-century not only made up for Rahul’s struggles, it set the tone for what was to follow in the remainder of the day. And justified as to why he continues to get picked over Quinton de Kock as the captain’s opening partner.

While Mayers didn’t convert the terrific start into an even bigger score, departing off the penultimate ball of the sixth over and becoming Rabada’s second wicket of the powerplay, it hardly deterred LSG’s charge towards the massive total that they would eventually post, as the Lucknow batters once again clicked as a unit.

Both Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran had played a key role in Lucknow’s miraculous victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium earlier this month, and two were at it again on Friday at the IS Bindra PCA Stadium, smashing 72 off 40 and 45 off 19 deliveries respectively to power Lucknow past the 250-mark — which had been achieved just one in the history of the IPL before this game.

Read | ‘Happy to do whatever my team needs’ says Stoinis after LSG defeat PBKS

Stoinis, who had been dismissed for a golden duck by Mohit Sharma in Lucknow’s epic collapse at the Ekana last Saturday, bounced back by top-scoring for his side. The Australian all-rounder has had his share of issues converting starts this season. But when he does, he usually ends up producing game-changing knocks.

Same could be said of Pooran, who struck at a rate of 236.84, eclipsing fellow West Indian Mayers (225), and would’ve counted himself unlucky to fall just five short of what would’ve been his second half-century of the season, becoming Arshdeep’s only wicket of the day. Had he batted till the final ball, Lucknow could have had a real shot at breaking RCB’s record for the highest IPL total (263/5) that they came so close to.

Last, but not the least, part of the reason why Stoinis was able to carry on from where Mayers left off was because of the manner in which Ayush Badoni, who was sent in at No 3 for a change, stitched a vital 89-run stand for the third wicket with a 24-ball 43 — smashing three fours and as many sixes with a strike rate almost touching 180.

Taide shines in a gloomy day for PBKS

Such was Lucknow’s dominance with the bat on the day that they managed to breach the 200-run mark with four overs yet to be bowled — a score that would deflate most teams in the world. And while the Punjab batters are quite capable of posting tall scores themselves, and a target in excess of 250 is by no means impossible (something that the South African team can attest to), it still would’ve required a Herculean effort on their part to collect their fifth win in eight games.

Unfortunately for the home team, skipper Dhawan was dismissed in the very first over for 1 on his comeback from injury. Fellow opener Atharva Taide rose to the occasion, plundering 19 runs off Marcus Stoinis in the third over and bringing up his first half-century in his maiden IPL season in 26 deliveries.

In Photos: Lucknow Super Giants outplay Punjab Kings in Mohali

The 23-year-old, however, didn’t find much support from the other end barring a cameo from Sikandar Raza (36 off 22), and would eventually be dismissed by Ravi Bishnoi for a 36-ball 66.

The middle-order trio of Liam Livingstone (23), Sam Curran (21) and Jitesh Sharma (24) got off to promising starts to ensure Punjab went past the 200-mark for a second-game running, it was nowhere enough to get them close to Lucknow’s total, let alone go past the finish line.

Mention must also be made of a couple of standout bowling performances in what was otherwise a day that firmly belonged to the batters. Lucknow pacer Yash Thakur was the pick of the bowlers with his haul of 4/37, including the wickets of Raza and Sharma.

Even more impressive, however, was the manner in which leg-spinner Rahul Chahar bowled his quote with an economy less than eight-an-over. In an innings in which the second-most economical bowler was Curran at 12.66, Chahar’s bowling deserves special praise, even if he ended up without a single wicket to his name.

Marcus Stoinis insisted he was happy to bat wherever or bowl whenever the team needed him after playing a central role in Lucknow Super Giants’ crushing 56-run victory over Punjab Kings in Mohali on Friday.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

Australia all-rounder Stoinis top-scored for Lucknow with a 40-ball 72, helping the side post a mammoth 257/5 on the board, before dismissing opposition captain Shikhar Dhawan in the very first over of the Punjab chase, with the home team getting bundled out for 201 in reply.

“I do enjoy the responsibility of batting a bit lower and seeing the game home. Part of my journey is batting at every position. Bowl the first over, bowl the last over. I’m happy to do whatever my team needs,” Stoinis, who was adjudged the Player of the Match, said during the post-match presentation ceremony at the IS Bindra PCA Stadium in Mohali.

Stoinis had hurt his finger during the 38th match of the season, raising concerns for LSG over his participation in the second half of the 16th edition of the league.

The all-rounder, however, insisted there wasn’t much to worry about at the moment. “The finger is alright. It is better now. We will get scans done,” said Stoinis after the game.

LSG skipper KL Rahul, meanwhile, said the six-day break after their narrow loss against defending champions Gujarat Titans helped them bounce back in style.

“The last game was a bit of a downer and did hurt a lot of us as a team but we had three or four days break after that which was good. Everyone got their minds off cricket and just rested,” said Rahul, who had led the Punjab Kings franchise before signing with LSG.

“Getting 250 or 260 speaks very highly of our batting. Those first two or three overs, Kyle put pressure on their bowling and that set the tone for us and we took it from there,” added Rahul.

Punjab captain Dhawan, who returned to action after missing three consecutive matches due to a shoulder injury, rued conceding too many runs to the Lucknow batters.

“We gave too many runs away and we paid the price for it. I feel that the strategy to play with one extra fast bowler backfired whereas KL used an extra spinner. I tried to change something and it didn’t work but that’s all right. It’s a good learning for me and we’ll come back better stronger,” said Dhawan.

Stand-in RCB skipper Virat Kohli minced no words as he vented out his frustration at RCB's loss against KKR

“We handed them the game. We did deserve to lose. We handed them a victory. We were certainly not up to standard,” said Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) stand-in skipper Virat Kohli after their 21-run loss to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Bengaluru on Wednesday.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

Virat Kohli surely knows a thing or two about dealing in pressure match situations, but on Wednesday, the situation was different.

RCB had leaked 69 runs in the last five overs to allow KKR post 200/5 after asking them to bat first.

Once again, RCB’s death bowling plans did not go well, and once again, RCB batters succumbed to a run-chase pressure. That is not something new. We’ve seen it before, RCB have done that before.

What did RCB lack against KKR?

When tough situations like chasing down a 200-plus total in a T20 comes up, it’s important to be mentally prepared for it. Something like, come what may. So what did RCB lack against KKR?

Steady partnerships. It’s not only catches that win you game, but it’s also those big, stable partnerships that also count as match-winners.

RCB started off their chase in some confident fashion, with Kohli and Du Plessis helping their team surge towards 30 in the first two overs.

However, Du Plessis departed in the first ball of the third over, and all of a sudden, it was as though, the entire rhythm of RCB’s chase was affected. Barring a 55-run stand between Kohli and Mahipal Lomror for the fourth wicket, there was nothing much substantial for Bengaluru, and more importantly, there was nobody who could not only play the aggressor role, but also hang in there till the end.

On the contrary, KKR had two 80-plus partnerships. The first one, being the one between openers Jagadeesan and Jason Roy, and the second one between Nitish Rana and Venkatesh Iyer for the third wicket.

Harshal Patel has been a death overs specialist for RCB for a while now, but on Wednesday, he endured wicketless figures of 0/44, with more than 30 runs of these coming in the death overs.

Varun Chakaravarthy, the game-changer

In his previous game, KKR’s Varun Chakaravarthy had endured figures of 1/49. Fast forward a few days later, he is back at his best, registering figures of 3/27.

Chakaravarthy not only took regular wickets, but also he was economically the best for KKR, with an economy rate of 6.75.

Varun’s first wicket was that of Glenn Maxwell, who holed out to Andre Russell at mid-off while looking to go big.

He later struck again in the 12th over, removing Mahipal Lomror with a wode outside off ball. Lomror went full the pull, but instead holed out Russell at deep midwicket, who took the catch.

If the contest was not done yet, Varun returned to haunt RCB towards the end of the match. In the 18th over, he got the wicket of Dinesh Karthik (22) who pulled it towards the deep, where the fielder completed the catch.

It’s not the variations that Varun is working on, instead, it’s the accuracy of a delivery.

“That’s how the game of cricket is. Last match I went for 49, today I get this award. My focus is on my accuracy, not to add variations. I have been working a lot,” said a confident Varun after the match.

RCB, meanwhile, will look to get things right. They dropped a few chances for catches on the field against KKR, probably one of the reasons why they leaked a lot more runs than they would have anticipated.

RCB will next get the chance to bounce back when they face Lucknow Super Giants on Monday, while KKR meet Gujarat Titans at Eden Gardens on Saturday.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) stand-in skipper Virat Kohli on Wednesday admitted that they ‘handed’ the game to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), following Bengaluru’s 21- run defeat at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

A few dropped chances by RCB proved costly, as Jason Roy (56) and Nitish Rana (48) led KKR to 200/5 from 20 overs.

RCB have been heavily reliant on their top trio of Du Plessis, Kohli and Glenn Maxwell to produce the runs, and on Wednesday their batting issues returned to haunt them.

Du Plessis, used as an impact substitute, managed only 17, while Kohli (54) and Mahipal Lomror (34) scored bulk of the runs.

Dinesh Karthik too scored 22 off 18, but that was certainly not enough while looking to chase down a big total.

“To be honest we handed them the game. We did deserve to lose. We handed them a victory. We were certainly not up to standard. If you look at the game, we didn’t capitalize our chances. We dropped a few chances which cost us 25-30 runs. We set up ourselves really well. We ended up hitting the fielder to balls which weren’t wicket taking. It is what’s on the scoreboard and how to get them,” Kohli said after the match.

“We needed one partnership to get us home. We need to be switched on and not give away soft plays. We have won one and lost one on the road. It is not something that is making us nervous. We need to win some away games to be in good shape for the later stages of the tournament,” added the veteran.

KKR skipper Nitish Rana highlighted on the team’s belief of bouncing back in the tournament.

“Last 3-4 matches I’ve been saying the same thing at the toss – if we play well collectively, result will be in our favour. You need a lot of character in the dressing room to give a performance like this in our situation. The belief has always been there that we’ll bounce back,” said Rana.

Varun Chakaravarthy won the Player of the Match for his figures of 3/27.

“That’s how the game of cricket is. Last match I went for 49, today I get this award. My focus is on my accuracy, not to add variations. I have been working a lot. I would like to thank AC Prathiban and Abhishek Nayar. I would like to dedicate this to my newborn son and my wife. I will see him after the IPL,” said the 31-year-old.

Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma termed his team’s 55-run defeat to Gujarat Titans (GT) in IPL 2023 as a ‘little disappointing’, lamenting that his team went for ‘few too many runs’ in the last few overs of the GT innings.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

GT were only 100/3 in 12.1 overs, but MI went onto concede more than 100 runs in the next 7.5 overs, with the Titans finishing their innings at 207/6.

In fact, 77 runs came off the last five overs, with Abhinav Manohar and David Miller running riot for GT with boundaries and maximums all over the park.

In reply, there was not much determination from most of MI’s batters as they were restricted to 152/9 from 20 overs.

“It’s a little disappointing. We pretty much had control of the game till the last few overs when we went for too many runs. It’s just about execution. We need to execute what’s right, who are the batsmen, those kind of things. But in the end we didn’t do that and gave too many runs. You’ve got to look at every team has very different strengths. We have a strong batting lineup to achieve the target. Today our batting couldn’t get going,” said Rohit at the post-match presentation ceremony.

GT skipper Hardik Pandya said that captaincy was something he backed his instincts on.

“That has been my motto, always taken calls on situations. T20 is very funny, a couple of sixes can change your mind. Captaincy is something I back my instincts on. Me and Ashu Pa have a similar mindset, we back our calls and we have similar calls.

“ Today, the idea of bowling Rashid and Noor was simple. They like pace with Green and Tim David who are big hitters, and that’s why we wanted to offer them spin and offer them spinners that are difficult to read,” said Hardik.

Abhinav Manohar, declared Player of the Match for his 21-ball 42, said he was ‘lucky’ to be part of GT.

“Lucky to be in this franchise. We get to bat for as long as we want in the net sessions here. I practice a lot and have a lot of self belief because of it. That’s paying off. I’ve been gifted to time the bowl well and have been doing it since a young age, to do it at this level feels like a dream,” the 28-year-old said.

The win took GT to second place with 10 points but MI remained static in seventh place with six points.

“Love it here, it’s an amazing crowd, they always come here and support. Thanks for all the support. The game throws us challenges, for us, it’s great to get two points.”

It was a happy ‘homecoming’ for David Warner on Monday as his Delhi Capitals (DC) side got the better of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), his former side, in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match in Uppal.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

For Delhi Capitals, more than the batters, it was a collective effort from the bowlers that led them to victory, as they successfully defended a total of 144/9.

Time and again, Axar Patel has saved Delhi Capitals on numerous occasions, and Monday witnessed a similar story, with Axar’s all-round performance having a major say in DC’s second consecutive win this season.

DC opted to bat after winning the toss, but it was a run-a-ball 34 from Axar, along with Manish Pandey (34) that  led the Capitals to 144. Prithvi Shaw, the out-of-form youngster, was dropped in favour of England’s Phil Salt, but even then, Salt failed to get going, and was dismissed for a golden duck by Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Most of the SRH batters seemed like they lacked confidence, as Anrich Nortje (2/33) and Axar Patel (2/21) ran riot, and Aiden Markram was right to point out SRH’s lack of intent in their batting.

Mayank Agarwal scored a39-ball 49 and Heinrich Klaasen played a 19-ball knock of 31, and time was running out for SRH before Washington Sundar (24* off 25 balls) could  try to do what Axar Patel did with the bat: Stand and deliver.

“Not good with the bat. Not enough intent, not excited to win a game of cricket unfortunately. We have to go back and see how we can be free and be better. It is difficult, you can say all the right things but guys have to buy into it.

“We want to play a certain brand of cricket and if we get it wrong doing that then we’ll sleep a lot better at night. Tonight we lacked intent, unfortunately we are letting us down because of a lack of intent,” Markram said at the presentation ceremony.

Washington Sundar’s triple strikes

DC had posted 49/2 in the powerplay phase against Sunrisers Hyderabad, but it was later Washington Sundar’s magic with the ball that gave SRH momentum, albeit momentarily in the game.

Sundar struck thrice in the eighth over of the match, getting two big wickets in Warner and Sarfaraz Khan, before seeing off Aman Khan to conclude the over.

Apart from Axar, Warner has been instrumental for DC this campaign so far, so to get the wicket of the Aussie is always a big relief.

To put to context, Warner has scored four half-centuries so far this season, which goes onto show that the skipper himself has been the backbone of DC.

On Monday, Warner was dismissed for 21, with the36-year-old going for the slog sweep only to find Harry Brook taking the catch at deep backward square leg.

Sarfaraz, too, got dismissed in similar fashion, falling victim to the sweep and finding the deep backward square-leg fielder, only this time, it was Bhuvneshwar Kumar with the catch.

From 49/2, DC were restricted to 62/5, but it was later a crucial 69-run stand between Manish Pandey and Axar Patel that took them to 144.

Mukesh Kumar seals the deal

Mukesh Kumar had gone for 15 runs in the 18th over of the SRH run-chase. He was hit for two fours by Klaasen, and another one by Washington Sundar, so there’s always bound to be some tension when you are asked to bowl the final over and defend 13 runs.

But, Mukesh did not let slip the opportunity. He rose to the occasion in fact, delivering some brilliant yorkers and bowling some fine lengths, with just five runs coming off that final over.

He may not have taken a wicket on Monday, but he sure did make an impact, in helping DC restrict SRH to 137/6. Afterall, it was a collective bowling effort from DC, irrespective of having taken a wicket or not, because a victory is all that matters at the end of the day. And Delhi Capitals did exactly that.

For SRH, it will be about improving on certain areas and getting back to the drawing board. SRH would hope that by now, they know their opponents better, because they face DC once again in a few days time, in the reverse fixture at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday.

Delhi Capitals all-rounder Axar Patel was at his best with the ball against Sunrisers Hyderabad in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match in Uppal on Monday.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

Following a run-a-ball 34 after DC opted to bat against SRH, Axar registered figures of 2/21 from four overs,
Axar had removed Mayank Agarwal for 49 in the 12th over, before cleaning up SRH skipper Aiden Markram in the first ball of the 15th over.

Both wickets came in a timely manner. While Agarwal was looking set for a half-century in a bid to keep SRH’s hopes alive, Hyderabad needed Markram to get going in their bid to chase down a target of 145, but the SRH captain’s dismissal proved to be a costly one. For Axar, it was about striking at the right time for DC.

Twitterati were impressed by Axar Patel’s figures. Here are a few reactions:
