MS Dhoni, Chennai Super Kings captain, singled out the team’s middle overs batting as the reason for defeat to defending champions Gujarat Titans on the opening day of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 at Ahmedabad.

CSK opener Ruturaj Gaikwad slammed 92 off 50 balls and the team looked set for a 200-plus total in the world’s largest cricket stadium but with the second-highest score being 23 from Moeen Ali, Chennai could only post 178/7. Gujarat got to the target with four balls to spare as Shubman Gill scored a stylish 63 off 36.

Dhoni scored 14 not out of 7 balls batting at the No 8 spot.

“We all knew there will be dew. We could have done a bit more with the batsman ship,” Dhoni said after the match. “Ruturaj (Gaikwad) was brilliant, he times the ball well and he’s a pleasure to watch. The way he picks his options, it is pleasing to watch. I think it’s important for the youngsters to step in.”

Dhoni didn’t have much to regret about CSK’s bowling and praised IPL debutant Rajvardhan Hangargekar who scalped three wickets.

“I think Raj (Hangargekar) has pace and he will get better with time. Think the bowlers will get better, a no-ball is something that’s in your control, so you need to work on that. I felt two left armers will be a better option so I went ahead with them. Shivam (Dube) was an option, but I felt comfortable with the bowlers overall,” said Dhoni.

Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya was happy with how his teams pulled back things in the middle after CSK made a strong start.

“We did put ourselves in a difficult situation but Rahul and Rashid did very well. We were happy at the mid-innings because at one point they looked like getting 200, but we got those couple of wickets to pull things back.”

IPL 2023: Impact player makes debut in GT vs CSK match

On the impact player rule, he said: “Having this Impact rule makes my job difficult. I have too many options, and because of this someone will bowl less. This game I realised bowling hard lengths was the way to go, that’s why Alzarri bowled late.

“Having Rashid is a real asset, he will get you wickets and get you some runs late down the order as well.”

The Indian Premier League (IPL) returned on Friday, and it began in style in Ahmedabad as hosts and defending champions Gujarat Titans romped towards a five-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings. The match began in electric fashion, with Ruturaj Gaikwad stealing the limelight to take CSK to 178 after being put to bat first.

However, Shubman Gill led an inspired fightback with 63 off 36 balls, while Player of the Match Rashid Khan picked two wickets.

Rahul Tewatia and Rashid eventually helped GT cross the finish line with four balls to spare.

Here are some top moments from the game:

First-ever Impact Player substitute

In a historic first for the Indian Premier League, pacer Tushar Deshpande became the first-ever ‘Impact Player’ when he came on for Ambati Rayudu ahead of GT’s run-chase. Similarly, the Titans followed suit, replacing an injured Kane Williamson with Sai Sudarshan before the chase.

Williamson had sustained a nasty injury while looking to save a six while fielding, eventually hurting his knee. Impact Player was first used in India during the 2022 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Only an Indian player can be substituted under the Impact Player rule, unless the team has less than four overseas players.

Ruturaj Gaikwad arrives (yet again) in style

Ruturaj Gaikwad picked up from where he left off last season, scoring a fine half-century to begin his campaign in style.

Gaikwad had ended IPL 2022 as CSK’s top-scorer with 368 runs, and on Friday, Gaikwad amassed 92 off just 50 balls, before being dismissed by Alzarri Joseph.

Gaikwad showcased loads of athleticism in his knock, and he got to his fifty in just 23 balls, slamming a six by pulling it over square leg boundary. Gaikwad, however, could not complete his century, after he was caught by Gill at long-on in the 18th over.

Joshua Little makes his presence felt

Josh Little had become the first player from Ireland to be selected by an IPL franchise during the player auction last December, after he was picked up by Gujarat Titans for Rs 4.40 crore.

And on Friday, the 23-year-old earned his maiden IPL wicket on tournament debut after he dismissed CSK’s Ambati Rayudu.

Rayudu was batting on 12 when Little got his first wicket. Delivering a full-length ball, Little cleaned up Rayudu, after the latter went to charge down the ground, but missed it, as the ball beat the edge and crashed onto the stumps.

Eventually, Little’s wicket came at a crucial time for GT, as he broke the 51-run stand of Rayudu and Gayakwad.

Little finished with figures of 1/41 from four overs.

Rahul Tewatia finishes off in style!

He’s been there, done that in the IPL previously, and Tewatia did the job yet again for GT, sealing the win with four balls to spare.

Tewatia had come into bat for GT at number six, with GT at 138/4 from 15 overs. He was involved in two small partnerships with Vijay Shankar and Rashid Khan, but both of Tewatia’s boundaries came off the last over.

Impact Player Deshpande was given with the responsibility to bowl the final over, with GT needing eight from six, but it was rather less impactful from Deshpande.

After conceding a wide off the first ball, Tewatia made full use of Deshpande’s full and wide ball, to slot it precisely, and clear mid-off fence for a six. Just one run was needed now, and Tewatia finished off in style, beating the bowler straight down the ground for a four.

Not only Gaikwad, Shubman breathes fire

Young Shubman Gill has been the talk of the town over the past few months, as far as Indian cricket is concerned.

Since the last IPL, Gill had made his T20I debut earlier in 2023, scored an unbeaten 126 against New Zealand in Ahmedabad, and amassed another century against Australia at the same venue.

Friday was a different tournament altogether, but the same Shubman Gill at the same venue. Gill opened the batting with Wriddhiman Saha, and dealt with CSK spinners in Ravindra Jadeja and Mitchell Santner in quite a way, finding boundaries at regular intervals to keep GT’s scoring rhythm on the uptick.

He looked to bat deep into the innings, even forging a 53-run partnership with Sai Sudarshan, but was eventually dismissed in the 15th over by Deshpande.

However, had it not been for Gill’s efforts, GT would have found themselves in a spot of bother.

And if Friday was of any indication, Gill is certainly here to stay in the IPL.

Ahmedabad: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 could not have asked for a better start to the tournament. Defending champions Gujarat Titans take on four-time winners Chennai Super Kings at the world’s biggest Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Topping the bill is the contest between mentor MS Dhoni and mentee Hardik Pandya.

Considered one of the best white-ball captains of all time, Dhoni has won three ICC trophies with India and four IPL titles with CSK. Pandya in that respect has a long way to go, but by leading GT to the IPL crown in their debut season in 2022, the Gujarat all-rounder has already shown that captaincy comes naturally to him. A quality that has put him first in the race to replace Rohit Sharma as India’s captain in white-ball formats when the time comes.

GT vs CSK: Live streaming and head-to-head record

There’s one factor though that could dampen this contest. Dhoni didn’t bat at the nets on Thursday owing to a knee injury he had sustained during a training session in Chennai, raising doubts over his participation in the tournament opener.

Team CEO Kasi Vishwanathan though said: “As far as I am concerned, Dhoni will play 100 percent.” But Pandya would love to match his wits with the original ‘Captain Cool’ and hope that he plays.

GT hope to repeat 2022 performance

2022 was Pandya’s first year as an IPL captain and despite his flamboyance on and off the field, he did invoke a certain sense of calm in Titans’ campaign that had the identical start to finish tempo, unmatched by any other team.

With Shubman Gill in the form of his life, Rashid Khan not losing one bit of his consistency and Pandya himself having his worth weight in gold, Gujarat are once again the team to beat.

IPL 2023: GT preview and strongest playing XI

David Miller’s absence from the opener due to national duty will reduce some middle-order muscle but Rahul Tewatia, who has improved by leaps and bounds in recent years, could compensate for the temporary miss.

Kane Williamson might not be the most sought after in this format but in low-scoring games on difficult surfaces, he could still be the man to watch out for.

Pandya has never shied away from admitting that he has learnt the ropes of leadership from Dhoni, who has always been his ‘Mentor’.

CSK look to bounce back

But at 42, playing from IPL to IPL, Dhoni knows the template of IPL success only too well. There have been blips here and there, like last time when they failed to qualify for the playoffs but even with shut eyes, one can vouch that there was no fault in planning but the execution wasn’t on expected lines.

On Friday, as the 16th edition starts, it will be very different from earlier ones as 12 players per side will take part in the pitched battle at the Motera Stadium with the ‘Impact Player’ rule coming into play for the first time.

IPL 2023: CSK preview and strongest playing XI

Dhoni, who manoeuvres his resources having put in a lot of thought into his actions, might well make himself the ‘Impact Player’ if need be during chases.

That for sure won’t happen in the first few games as both teams try to make optimal use of the rule.

For CSK, the presence of Ben Stokes is sure to make the opposition wary but to Gujarat Titans’ delight, the England Test captain perhaps won’t bowl at least in the initial phase of the tournament.

That makes him an ideal candidate as ‘Impact Player’ depending on whether the team bats first or second and accordingly Dhoni can think of playing three foreigners instead of four.

Devon Conway, Stokes and Moeen Ali at this point look the non-negotiable three starters in the playing eleven.

A lot will depend on how well Ravindra Jadeja, Ambati Rayudu and Dhoni himself perform with willow as the Indian pace bowling unit of Deepak Chahar and Simarjeet Singh will have their task cut out.

How well Dhoni can use either spinner Mahesh Theeksana or slinger Matheesa Pathirana will also go a long way in establishing a pattern in selections.

IPL 2023 opening ceremony: Time, venue, performers and more

As far as GT is concerned, there is one strategic decision that has been baffling and that is the release of tearaway quick Lockie Ferguson and bringing in Shivam Mavi. However, Alazarri Joseph’s presence is a bit reassuring in this format.

Save Mohammed Shami, the only other pacer of repute is the skipper himself. Yash Dayal had a good first season but hasn’t been in great form in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with only 2 wickets from 6 games, but to be fair, he was coming back from injury. Pradeep Sangwan and Mohit Sharma are both experienced campaigners but they are now well past their prime.

The other cause of worry for GT will be the keeper’s slot. While Wriddhiman Saha was decent as an opener last year, they have a better T20 batter in Kona Bharat this time round, who incidentally bats in the top order in the shortest format.

Teams

Gujarat Titans: Hardik Pandya (captain), Shubman Gill, Kona Bharat (wk), Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Kane Williamson, Rahul Tewatia, Abhinav Manohar, Mohammed Shami, Pradeep Sangwan, R Sai Kishore, Vijay Shankar, Sai Sudharshan, Rashid Khan, Shivam Mavi, Mathew Wade, Odean Smith, Urvil Patel, Darshan Nalkande, David Miller (not available in first 2 games), Josh Little (first match not available), Yash Dayal, Jayant Yadav, Odean Smith, Noor Ahmed, Alzarri Joseph.

Chennai Super Kings: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain), Devon Conway, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ambati Rayudu, Moeen Ali, Ben Stokes, Ravindra Jadeja, Ajinkya Rahane, Sisanda Magala, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, Dwaine Pretorius, Ahay Mandal, Nishant Sindhu, Rajvardhan Hangargekar, Mitchell Santner, Subharnshu Senapati, Simarjeet Singh, Matheesa Pathirana, Mahesh Theekshana, Bhagath Verma, Prashant Solanki, Shaikh Rasheed, Tushar Deshpande, Akash Singh.

Rohit Sharma will complete 10 years as Mumbai Indians captain with the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. The Mumbai batter, who took over the captaincy in 2013, has won a record five IPL titles with the franchise.

IPL 2023: All you need to know

Former India cricketers, Anil Kumble, Zaheer Khan and Aakash Chopra, who will be appearing as experts on JioCinema during IPL 2023, got together to dissect Rohit’s impact on MI and expectations from the India captain.

Anil Kumble served as a mentor on the 2013 Mumbai Indians squad in Sharma’s first season as captain of the franchise. He shared his insights on Sharma’s leadership style and confidence.

“He was not afraid to say what he had to say. He had plenty of experience around him and he reached out to them as well but then but took his own decisions. That’s what you want from a captain,” Kumble said on JioCinema’s Insiders Preview show.

IPL 2023: Everything you need to know about Mumbai Indians

Kumble also spoke about him leading a new team in 2017 and said, “2017 was a new team and the kind of captaincy we saw from him in terms of defending low scores, that’s when your true leadership comes out.”

Zaheer Khan emphasized on how a captain’s role is the most important and said, “The captain’s role is of utmost importance, the way he is thinking and taking decisions in crucial stages in a cool manner and the right decisions, and if it doesn’t go your way, how he is handling the situation. It is a long tournament and every game’s performance can have an impact in the next game. Rohit has the ability and personality to absorb pressure very well. The way he communicates in a cool way, not just with players but also in press conferences, I think that is his biggest strength.”

IPL 2023: MI helped me showcase myself in a different avatar, says Rohit

Mumbai Indians have enjoyed tremendous success under Rohit’s leadership. That doesn’t mean he is any less lethal with the bat. Kumble however wants to see Sharma bat at number four, “Especially with the current MI team, you need that experience in the middle order. There are some wonderful batters that MI possesses, but I think someone like Rohit Sharma in the middle, controlling seven to fifteen overs is extremely critical.”

Aakash Chopra also broke down the impact Sharma has while batting and said, “When Rohit is batting, he does it beautifully and he’ll keep doing it. He’s doing it for India, for the Mumbai Indians. When he bats, he’s in a different league altogether,” said Chopra before posing an interesting question for Mumbai’s batting strategy this season.

“As a result of that, people keep debating what’s best for Rohit. What is the place where you can get the best out of Rohit? He can open and easily score a century over 20 overs. The question arises, what’s best for Mumbai? As Anil bhai said, he may be more useful to the team batting at number four. It’s a toss-up between what’s best for Rohit and what’s best for Mumbai.”

PBKS IPL 2023 Preview: One of the eight original teams in the Indian Premier League, the Punjab Kings, or Kings XI Punjab before the 2021 season, have over the years made an name for themselves as the perennial underachievers. And it’s for good reason that PBKS have this impression, which they will desperately be looking to shake off heading into the 16th season of the IPL.

Punjab, after all, have made the playoffs just twice in the history of the tournament, in the inaugural edition in 2008 where they lost to Chennai Super Kings, and in 2014, their only appearance in an IPL final till date where they lost to the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Since the highs of the runner-up finish in 2014, Punjab have finished at the bottom of the table twice and have finished sixth in each of the last four editions (with the 2022 tournament being a 10-team affair).

A possible reason as to why PBKS has underwhelmed in the last eight seasons could be the lack of a solid core, a central tenet in team sport. Another reason could be leadership-related, with Punjab having frequently changed captains — Shikhar Dhawan is their 14th skipper in 16 editions. Also, the last time Punjab had the same captain for more than two seasons was Adam Gilchrist between 2011 and 2013.

In Dhawan, however, Punjab have a tried-and-tested leader, someone who has been leading the Indian team in the absence of the Virat Kohlis and Rohit Sharmas in recent years, someone who knows how to get the best out of his side, especially younger players. And given Dhawan was their leading run-scorer in the last season with 460 runs at an average of 38.33, the veteran southpaw will hope to lead from the front this season.

IPL 2023 Factbox | Everything you need to know about PBKS

Punjab had created a new record in the player auction in December by shelling out more than Rs 18 crore for England all-rounder Sam Curran, making him the most expensive player of all time in the league. Curran, who debuted with PBKS in 2019 before representing Chennai Super Kings in 2020 and 2021, is expected to play a major role this season and will hope to prove his money’s worth.

Besides Curran, focus will also be on Liam Livingstone, an explosive middle-order option who played every game last season for the Kings, collecting 437 runs at an average of 36.42 at a mind-boggling strike-rate of 182.08.

Another individual who could help Punjab end their nine-year wait for a playoffs appearance is Zimbabwean Sikandar Raza, who was an absolute steal at the auction as he was purchased at his base price of Rs 50 lakh. Raza, like Curran, had a terrific run in the T20 World Cup Down Under and also played an all-round role in Lahore Qalandars’s path to title victory in the 2023 edition of the Pakistan Super League.

But a major worry for the Kings will be the absence of Jonny Bairstow, who is yet to recover from the foot injury that he suffered while playing golf last year. The Englishman has proved to quite handy, whether batting in the top three or in the middle, striking at over 140 in each of the last two seasons of the IPL, and substituting him will be no mean feat even though Australia’s Matthew Short, his replacement in the squad this season, finished the second-highest run-scorer in the Big Bash League in January, scoring 458 runs at an average and strike rate of 35.23 and 144.47 respectively, including a century.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is no doubt one of the most popular cricketers in India and the cheers he got at the Chepauk Stadium during his recent practice session prove that. While the player is admired and adored by thousands across the nation, he is pretty much worshipped by the people of Chennai, thanks to his stint with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the team which he has been leading since the inaugural of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008.
Dhoni has remarkably led the team through thick and thin and has become a crowd favourite among cricket lovers. He took the team to four IPL titles, making the Chennai-based franchise the second-highest trophy winner after Mumbai Indians.

With a lot of feathers on his cap, the love for Dhoni among his followers was recently witnessed yet again at the famous MA Chidambaram Stadium on Monday. As Dhoni stepped out on the field for a practice session, fans who were in attendance in large numbers, gave out their loudest cheer to welcome him.

In a video shared by the official Instagram of CSK, Dhoni can be seen making a grand entry for his batting turn while his followers can be heard chanting ‘Dhoni Dhoni’ from the stands. The former India skipper received a truly “whistle podu” reception from his IPL home ground.

It is pertinent to note that Monday’s match was just a warm-up session ahead of IPL 2023 starts, when Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings will face Hardik Pandya’s Gujarat Titans (GT) in the campaign opener on Friday, 31 March 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Dhoni’s stint with CSK

The former India skipper has scored 4,978 runs in 234 IPL fixtures till date. In the last season, Chennai Super Kings failed to perform as per expectations. The Chennai-based franchise won four games and suffered 10 defeats, finishing in the ninth position. Dhoni had stepped down as the side’s captain in 2022, but soon was reinstated after Ravindra Jadeja relinquished the position and opted out of the tournament due to injury issues.

IPL titles: 1

Rajasthan Royals started the IPL in style as the Shane Warne-led side stunned everyone to lift the championship in 2008. Since then, however, they have remained the perennial underdogs, failing to repeat their maiden success. They have been very inconsistent and made to the playoffs only thrice in the next 11 years. In between, they were suspended for two years following the spot-fixing sage.

RR had ended as runners-up in the Champions League Twenty20 in 2013.

Here’s how they have fared year on year

How did they fare the previous season: Rajasthan Royals (RR), under Sanju Samson as skipper, displayed glimpses of their old times as they reached the final of IPL 2022, eventually losing to Gujarat Titans by seven wickets. RR managed to finish in the top two, having won nine of their 14 games in the league stage, and ending it with 18 points, only two behind eventual champions GT. The Royals had lost to Titans in Qualifier 1, but went into get the better of RCB in Qualifier 2. However, they could not replicate the result against Titans in the final.

Win Percentage: The Royals are seventh when it comes to win percentage. They have won 94 of 194 matches they have played in the IPL so far, and have lost 93 of them.

Highest Run-getter: Ajinkya Rahane

Ajinkya Rahane has been RR’s highest-run getter so far with 3098 runs from 99 innings at 35.60. He has a strike rate of 122.30 and has scored two hundreds and 21 fifties. Rahane donned the RR cap from 2011 to 2019. In 2020, he wore the Delhi Capitals jersey and was retained in 2021 as well. In the 2022 IPL auction, he was bought by KKR for his base price of 1 crore.

Among the current RR players, captain Sanju Samson is the highest run-getter with 3041 runs from 112 innings at 30.10. He has a strike rate of 137.36 for RR and has scored two hundreds and 17 fifties.

Highest wicket-taker: Siddharth Trivedi

It may come as a surprise but medium pacer Siddharth Trivedi, who last played for the franchise in 2013 before being suspended for one year for not reporting approaches by a bookie during the IPL spot-fixing scandal in 2013, is the highest wicket-taker for RR. He scalped 65 wickets from 75 innings at 29.29. He had one four-wicket haul, an economy rate of 7.58, and a strike rate of 23.1.

Among the current crop, batting all-rounder Riyan Parag has the most wickets – 3 from 15 innings at 73.66. His economy rate is 9.96 and strike rate is 44.3.

Highest individual score: Jos Buttler 124 off 64 balls vs Sunrisers Hyderabad in Delhi in 2021

This was Jos Buttler at his best as he plundered 8 sixes and 11 fours in a whirlwind knock of 124 off 64 balls after being put into bat first by SRH. He set the platform opening the batting and then added 150 rins off just 82 balls with captain Sanju Samson as RR posted a mammoth 220/3 from 20 overs. It was Buttler’s maiden T20 century. He started off a bit slowly, scoring 50 off 39 balls but then went berserk and smashed 74 off the next 25 balls to blow away SRH.

In reply, SRH could manage only 165/8 as RR cruised to a 55-run win. Buttler was deservedly named the Player of the Match for his match-winning innings.

Highest team score: 226/6 vs KXIP in Sharjah in 2020

Bonus Point: RR hold the record for the highest run chase in the league. They chased down 224 against Kings XI Punjab in Sharjah in 2020, winning by four wickets with three balls to spare. They bettered their own record set earlier where they chased down 215 against Deccan Chargers in the 2008 edition at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

Favourite opponent: Punjab Kings (Formerly Kings XI Punjab)

Rajasthan have 14 wins from 24 matches and 10 losses against Punjab Kings, with one match lost in Super Over.

Bogey team: CSK have had a wood over Rajasthan Royals. RR have lost 15 of the 26 matches played against them and won just 11 matches.

When they played in the UAE:

Rajasthan Royals had a roller-coaster ride in the UAE in 2014. They started off with a win but then lost their way with two losses and then again got back on track to end the leg on a positive note with two consecutive wins making it three wins and two losses from five. They didn’t end up qualifying for playoffs in that campaign, ending fifth.

When they returned in 2020, they had an even worse time, finishing last in the group with just six wins from 14 matches.

In the second leg of the 2021 season, their poor form in the UAE continued as they won just two of the seven matches and lost five.

.Lesser known facts:

  • Rajasthan Royals have never made it to the final after the inaugural edition where they won the tournament.
  • RR have had the most hat-trick takers in the league: 4 – Ajit Chandila, Pravin Tambe, Shane Watson and Shreyas Gopal.
  • Royals were a part of the first-ever tied match in IPL history, against KKR at Cape Town in 2009. They won the match in the one-over eliminator.
  • Ajinkya Rahane has scored 1100 runs at an average of 39.29 in IPL at Sawai Mansingh Stadium – the most by any RR batsman at any venue in IPL

MUMBAI INDIANS ARE CHAMPIONS OF WPL 2023! Mumbai Indians are crowned champions of the inaugural edition of the Women's Premier League, beating Delhi Capitals by seven wickets. Heartbreak for DC, who endured a tough time with the bat, but a 52-run stand between Shikha Pandey and Radha Yadav took them to 131/9. However, DC were almost outplayed in Mumbai Indians' reply, with Nat Sciver-Brunt leading an inspired fightback after having lost Harmanpreet Kaur at a crucial juncture of the match.

22:42 (IST)

Mumbai Indians 127/3 after 19 overs

Nat Sciver-Brunt collects a boundary off the first ball of the 19th over to get to her fifty, her third half-century of WPL 2023. But can that be a match-winning one? We will get to know shortly. Amelia Kerr collects a couple of crucial boundaries, and that reduces the deficit even further. We are in for a close finish. MI need 5 runs off 6 balls.

22:31 (IST)

Mumbai Indians 106/3 after 17 overs

A huge blow for MI in the context of this final. Harmanpreet Kaur takes a risky single after hitting towards midwicket, and she is run-out by Alice Capsey at the bowler's end. Harmanpreet is dismissed for 37, and suddenly there is a setback in MI's plans to win this. Sciver-Brunt is into her 40s, but has the task cut out, with Amelia Kerr the new batter. MI need 26 runs off 18 balls.

22:29 (IST)

OUT! Another twist to the tale! Skipper Harmanpreet is run-out at the bowler's end after she takes a risky single, post hitting towards midwicket. Alice Capsey collects the ball from Shikha Pandey, and the former dislodges the bails. Kaur run out (Shikha Pandey/Capsey) 37

22:25 (IST)

Mumbai Indians 95/2 after 16 overs

Eight runs off the 16th over bowled by Shikha Pandey. Nat Sciver-Brunt finds the gap between backward point and short third man to collect a boundary. MI need 37 runs to win off 24 balls.

FOUR! Sciver-Brunt finds the gap through deep backward point to collect a crucial boundary.

22:20 (IST)

Mumbai Indians 87/2 after 15 overs

Radha Yadav back into the attack for her final over. Harmanpreet collects another boundary, towards deep midwicket. The MI skipper tries to find the gap again just a couple of balls later, but gets just a single.  Six runs off the over. MI need 45 runs off 30 balls.

22:02 (IST)

Mumbai Indians 51/2 after 10 overs

Halfway through the chase, and Mumbai Indians have managed just 51 off the first 10 overs. Task still cut out for MI, but it's still anyone's game. Six off Alice Capsey's first over.

Mumbai Indians 28/2 after 7 overs

21:29 (IST)

21:10 (IST)

Delhi Capitals 131/9 after 20 overs

What a remarkable comeback this has been from Delhi Capitals. A 52-run stand between Shikha Pandey and Radha Yadav in just 24 balls takes the Capitals to 131/9 from 20 overs. Issy Wong had struck thrice inside the powerplay overs, annd the Capitals kept losing wickets at regular intervals, but Shikha and Radha led the recovery in the end. The MI chase to follow shortly.

21:00 (IST)

Delhi Capitals 115/9 after 19 overs

19:54 (IST)

OUT! Another one bites the dust! Alice Capsey departs as Delhi Capitals lose wickets in quick succession. A high full toss outside off, Capsey lobs it to the fielder at cover who makes a diving effort to complete the catch. DC reviews this one too, but loses this one as well. The Capitals have lost both reviews so far. Capsey c Amanjot Kaur b Wong 0

19:49 (IST)

OUT! Shafali Verma is caught at backward point by Amelia Kerr off Issy Wong's bowling, but DC have reviewed for a height no-ball. It's a touch and go decision, and it's not given a no-ball. Shafali remains OUT. Shafali Verma c Melie Kerr b Wong 11

WPL 2023 Final LIVE

To have any chance of winning a trophy, Harmanpreet would need to fire or hope for her top-order batters to find their best form and not leave the job to the middle or lower order players.

MI don’t have to think much about their bowling though.

Pacer Issy Wong took WPL’s first hat-trick in the Eliminator against UPW. Also, Saika Ishaque (15 wickets), Matthews (13), Kerr (13) and Wong (12) hold the second, third, fourth and fifth place respectively in the highest wicket-takers list currently in WPL 2023.

18:30 (IST)

Hello and welcome to our LIVE blog of the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2023 final between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians, that will be held at the Brabourne Stadium tonight. It's Meg Lanning vs Harmanpreet Kaur in the final, and with interesting matchups on the cards, the final promises to be an exciting one. Stay tuned for more updates.

Preview: The inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League reaches its conclusion on Sunday when Delhi Capitals (DC) take on Mumbai Indians (MI) in the final at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.

Meg Lanning and Harmanpreet Kaur will go head to head in the WPL for the third time this season. The head-to-head between the two teams is one win apiece, but anything can happen during a final, thus making it for an interesting watch.

Both teams have enough firepower ahead of the final. While MI consists of Nat Sciver-Brunt and Hayley Matthews among some reputed all-rounders, Issy Wong, who took four wickets in the Eliminator against UP Warriorz, should not be written off.

Meg Lanning herself is a handy batter for DC, while there will also be support for Mumbai-born Jemimah Rodrigues. Rodrigues has managed just 117 runs from six innings at an average of 29.25, but will look to make a positive impression for her team.

Australia’s Jess Jonassen has been one of DC’s impressive bowlers, with eight wickets to her name.

Squads:

Delhi Capitals: Meg Lanning (c), Jemimah Rodrigues (vc), Shafali Verma, Alice Capsey, Radha Yadav, Shikha Pandey, Marizanne Kapp, Titas Sadhu, Laura Harris, Tara Norris, Jasia Akhtar, Minnu Mani, Taniya Bhatia (wk), Poonam Yadav, Jess Jonassen, Sneha Deepthi, Arundhati Reddy, Aparna Mondal.

Mumbai Indians: Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Nat Sciver-Brunt, Amelia Kerr, Pooja Vastrakar, Yastika Bhatia (wk), Heather Graham, Isabelle Wong, Amanjot Kaur, Dhara Gujjar, Saika Ishaque, Hayley Matthews, Chloe Tryon, Humaira Kazi, Komal Zanzad, Priyanka Bala, Sonam Yadav, Neelam Bisht, Jintamani Kalita.

By winning the first five matches on the trot, Mumbai Indians become everyone’s favourite to not just reach the final of the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL) but also for the trophy. But then they hit a roadblock.

DC vs MI, WPL final: Live streaming details

Back-to-back defeats to UP Warriorz and Delhi Capitals took the wind out of their sails. The first team to qualify for WPL 2023 playoffs eventually finished the league phase with six wins and 12 points, the same as Delhi Capitals but a spot behind them in second in the points table on the basis of NRR (Net Run Rate).

DC never had a winning streak as crazy as that of MI but showed enough consistency to finish at the top of the league table and qualify directly for the final.

Mumbai had to beat third-placed UP Warriorz in the Eliminator to finally make it to the final.

And in the summit clash, Mumbai once again face the consistent Delhi for a fight to make history. The winner will be crowned the first-ever WPL champion and none of the teams will be willing to give an inch.

For Mumbai, their biggest concern is the form of the skipper Harmanpreet Kaur. After three fifties in the first five games, Harmanpreet’s best has been 25 in the last four matches. The biggest run-makers for MI had been its top-order players — Yastik Bhatia, Hayley Matthews, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Harmanpreet. Along with the captain, the other three have also witnessed a dip in form. Leading to defeats against UPW and DC in the league phase.

Even in the last league game against Royal Challengers Bangalore, it was the contributions of Amelia Kerr and Pooja Vastrakar from the middle-order that helped bail MI out.

The good news is that Yastika and Matthews got useful 20-plus scores in the Eliminator that MI won by 72 runs, while Nat Sciver-Brunt dazzled with her 72 not out off 38 balls. Harmanpreet could only get 14 in the match.

On the other hand, DC are captained by Meg Lanning, probably the best skipper in women’s cricket. Lanning recently led Australia to a record-extending sixth T20 World Cup title and leads the batting chart currently in WPL 2023 with 310 runs in eight matches at a strike rate of 142.

Delhi also have a strong Indian core of Jemimah Rodrigues, Shafali Verma, Shikha Pandey and Radha Yadav. Players who can be the deciding factor in the final.

Also on their side is South Africa’s Marizanne Kapp. One of the best all-rounders going around, Kapp has so far scored 159 runs and has taken nine wickets.

All in all, both teams have a bunch of match-winning players, but whichever team has them firing on all cylinders on Sunday will eventually have the trophy in their kitty.

The match will be played at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai and will start at 7.30 PM IST.

Head-to-head: DC and MI have played two matches against each other so far. MI won the first match by eight wickets and lost the second one by nine wickets.

Squads:

Delhi Capitals: Meg Lanning (c), Jemimah Rodrigues (vc), Shafali Verma, Alice Capsey, Radha Yadav, Shikha Pandey, Marizanne Kapp, Titas Sadhu, Laura Harris, Tara Norris, Jasia Akhtar, Minnu Mani, Taniya Bhatia (wk), Poonam Yadav, Jess Jonassen, Sneha Deepthi, Arundhati Reddy, Aparna Mondal.

Mumbai Indians: Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Nat Sciver-Brunt, Amelia Kerr, Pooja Vastrakar, Yastika Bhatia (wk), Heather Graham, Isabelle Wong, Amanjot Kaur, Dhara Gujjar, Saika Ishaque, Hayley Matthews, Chloe Tryon, Humaira Kazi, Komal Zanzad, Priyanka Bala, Sonam Yadav, Neelam Bisht, Jintamani Kalita.

That brings us to the end of our coverage of the Eliminator between Mumbai Indians and UP Warriorz at the DY Patil Stadium. Just one more game to go in the inaugural Women’s Premier League with the Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals — two of the most consistent sides — deservedly facing off in what promises to be a cracker of a finale on Sunday!

For now, this is Amit signing off, bidding you good night and wishing you all a happy weekend ahead!

23:01 (IST)

Natalie Sciver-Brunt is the Player of the Match for her unbeaten 72

22:53 (IST)

Coincidence?

22:52 (IST)

That was as comprehensive a performance from the Mumbai Indians as it could get! Harmanpreet Kaur and Co did stutter towards the business end of the league stage, suffering back-to-back losses against UP Warriorz and Delhi Capitals, but managed to rediscover their dominant touch tonight. They bossed UP Warriorz with bat and ball tonight to walk away with a 72-run win and have set a date with Delhi Capitals in the summit clash at Brabourne on Sunday!

Although one does wonder how the game would pan out had Sophie Ecclestone not dropped Sciver-Brunt on 6 earlier in the evening. Food for thought.

22:45 (IST)

MI vs UPW Eliminator LIVE Cricket Score

After 17.4 overs, UPW 110 ( Parshavi Chopra 0, )

OUT! Saika Ishaque grabs the final wicket, trapping Rajeshwari Gayakwad LBW with the umpire instantly raising his finger.

Mumbai Indians bundle UP Warriorz out for 110 and storm into the final with a massive 72-run win!

MI vs UPW Eliminator LIVE Cricket Score

BOWLED! First a brilliant diving catch at short fine and now a wicket off her first ball of the evening! Jintimani Kalita beats Anjali Sarvani's defence and rattles the leg stump, leaving Mumbai Indians needing one more wicket to complete a memorable triumph! UPW 104/9

Sarvani b Kalita 5(11)

Here's Wong's magic moment!

22:33 (IST)

MI vs UPW Eliminator LIVE Score

After 16 overs, UPW 104/8 ( Anjali Sarvani 5, Rajeshwari Gayakwad 1)

Wong bowls out her final over, finishing with figures of 4/15 after four overs! Her performance should give Nat Sciver-Brunt's unbeaten 72 some tough competition for the Player of the Match tonight! Matthews concedes five wides in the penultimate delivery of her third over, bringing up the 100 for the Warriorz. Umpire signals timeout at the end of the 16th. UPW need 79 off 24 with two tailenders at the centre.

22:25 (IST)

MI vs UPW Eliminator LIVE Score

After 14 overs, UPW 94/8 ( Anjali Sarvani 2, Rajeshwari Gayakwad 0)

OUT! And now a screamer by Jintimani Kalita at short fine leg to make the evening even more special for the Mumbai Indians as Hayley Matthews gets rid of Deepti Sharma, UP Warriorz' last recognised batter! That should be it as far as UPW's journey in the inaugural WPL is concerned. Deepti did put up a fight earlier in the over, collecting two boundaries in three deliveries, but ultimately perishes after getting a top-edge off a sweep.

Excellent second over from Amelia Kerr, conceding just a single off it to build further pressure on the UP Warriorz who are four down now. Timeout signalled at the end of this over. Though they are firmly in control at the moment. Mumbai will be wary of Navgire, who's batting on 23 at the moment and is striking the ball really well. There's also Deepti Sharma and Sophie Ecclestone, both of whom can challenge MI despite the situation.

MI vs UPW, WPL 2023 Eliminator preview: Mumbai Indians take on UP Warriorz in the Eliminator at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Friday as the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League enters the playoffs.

Unlike the Indian Premier League, the WPL format includes just one playoff game excluding the final, with the top-ranked side at the end of the five-team league stage progressing directly into the final and the second and third-ranked sides facing off in the Eliminator.

MI had for long been favourites to finish on top of the table at the end of the group stage, reeling off five wins in a row. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side, however, stuttered towards the business end of the tournament, suffering consecutive defeats against UP Warriorz and Delhi Capitals by five and nine wickets respectively.

Mumbai, though returned to winning ways in their final league game of the tournament, beating the Smriti Mandhana-led Royal Challengers Bangalore by four wickets to finish with 12 points — the same as DC, who finished top of the table due to their superior Net Run Rate.

The Alyssa Healy-led UP Warriorz, meanwhile scraped through with four wins and as many defeats, securing their place in the playoffs with wins over Mumbai and Gujarat Giants (three wickets) before losing their final game of the group stage against Delhi Capitals by five wickets.

Squads:

Mumbai Indians: Hayley Matthews, Yastika Bhatia(w), Nat Sciver-Brunt, Harmanpreet Kaur(c), Melie Kerr, Pooja Vastrakar, Issy Wong, Amanjot Kaur, Humaira Kazi, Jintimani Kalita, Saika Ishaque, Chloe Tryon, Heather Graham, Dhara Gujjar, Sonam Yadav, Neelam Bisht, Priyanka Bala

UP Warriorz: Alyssa Healy(w/c), Shweta Sehrawat, Simran Shaikh, Tahlia McGrath, Kiran Navgire, Deepti Sharma, Sophie Ecclestone, Anjali Sarvani, Parshavi Chopra, Soppadhandi Yashasri, Shabnim Ismail, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Grace Harris, Devika Vaidya, Lauren Bell, Shivali Shinde, Laxmi Yadav
