MS Dhoni remains famous for his ‘Captain Cool’ reputation. However, the ex-India skipper did have moments where he lost his temper with the team or one memorable occasion, the umpires. Former India fielding coach R Sridhar details in his book ‘Coaching Beyond: My Days With The Indian Cricket Team’ that Dhoni was furious with his teammates one time and did not hesitate in making it known.

The incident happened during the West Indies series of 2014. India had lost the first ODI by a mammoth 124 runs and were trailing the four match series. In the second ODI, played in Delhi, India did win but struggled in the field. According to Sridhar, MS Dhoni “was furious at what he perceived to be lack of effort and dipping fitness standards” and did not mince his words.

In the Delhi ODI, India were stumbling at 74/3 after the top order departed early. Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina’s 105-run partnership helped India claw back into the game. Dhoni also scored a half-century, taking India’s total to 263/7.

When it was time for the West Indies to bat, the Dwayne Bravo-led unit started off well. Indian bowlers were unable to gain the upper hand, and the visitors were soon cruising at 170/3 in 35.3 overs. However, after the dismissal of Marlon Samuels, the West Indies collapsed like a deck of cards and were all out for 215.

India won the encounter by 48 runs. Mohammed Shami was awarded the Player of the Match for his four-fer. The spinner gave away just 36 runs in 9.3 overs and dismissed Dwayne Smith, Darren Bravo, Dwayne Bravo and Ravi Rampaul.

While the Men in Blue were ecstatic at having levelled the series 1-1, Dhoni did not feel the same. After the match, he stated, “I feel quite a few things are missing. We have to pull our socks up. We have not played to our potential. This game is a crucial eye opener for us. We are on the winning side, but we could have lost this.”

Watch: MS Dhoni visits Indian team dressing room ahead of T20Is against New Zealand

Back in the dressing room, Dhoni did not waste any time admonishing his teammates. “In the dressing room, he ripped the team to shreds and gave them an ultimatum, making it clear that if they didn’t meet certain standards in fielding and fitness, they would not make the World Cup cut, no matter what name they answer to. That showed me the kind of fielding culture he was looking to establish in white-ball cricket,” Sridhar wrote.

As for the series, the five-ODI series was shortened to four after the third contest was cancelled due to cyclone Hudhud. West Indies abandoned the tour after the fourth ODI due to a dispute between the team and their cricket board. At that time, India were leading the four-game series 2-1.

Mohammad Amir’s hopes of making an international return received a boost with Pakistan chief selector Haroon Rashid saying the pacer could be in contention if he continues to perform.

Amir had announced his retirement from international cricket in 2020 accusing the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) of subjecting him to “mental torture”. Since then, he has taken to playing T20 leagues across the world, including the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) where he is currently representing Sylhet Strikers.

And with his two-wicket haul against Khulna Tigers on Monday, Amir became the third-quickest bowler to 50 wickets in the league, a record that he shares with former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi.

“I have heard he is thinking of taking his retirement back. It is good that he is playing. If he continues to perform, he will be in contention for selection like other players,” Rashid was quoted as telling Cricket Pakistan.

Also Read: Door open for Mohammad Amir, says PCB chairman Najam Sethi

Rashid was appointed the PCB chief selector on a permanent basis last Monday, taking over from Afridi who had been appointed by the Najam Sethi-led administration on a temporary basis. Rashid had previously served as the chief selector in 2015 and 2016 and had also served as PCB’s Director of Cricket Operations as well as team manager.

Amir, who burst into the international scene as a teenager in 2009, had served a five-year ban for his role in the 2010 spot-fixing scandal, for which he even had to spend some time in a British jail.

He would make his way back into the Pakistan team in 2016 and played a key role in their triumph in the 2017 Champions Trophy, where they beat arch-rivals India in the final at the Oval.

The curator of the pitch at Lucknow’s Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium which had come under criticism from India captain Hardik Pandya has been sacked, said a media report. While India won the Lucknow T20I by six wickets to stay alive in the three-match series, it was a very difficult pitch to bat on. New Zealand managed 99/8 in 20 overs batting first and India in reply crawled successfully to the target in 19.5 overs. No six was hit in the match.

After the game, a disappointed Pandya had labelled the pitch a “shocker of a wicket”.

“To be honest, this was a shocker of a wicket. Two games the kind of wickets we have played on. I don’t mind difficult wickets. I am all up for that, but these two wickets are not made for T20. Somewhere down the line the curators or the stadium whichever we are going to play in T20, they should make sure they prepare the pitches earlier, rather than having a couple of games there,” Pandya had said.

According to a report in the Indian Express, the pitch curator has been replaced by Sanjeev Agarwal from Gwalior to get the pitch ready for IPL 2023. The report also added that the last-minute request from Team India management could have played a role in the pitch behaving so poorly. It said that two black soil pitches were prepared for the game but the management asked the curator three days before the game to prepare a red soil pitch, however, the lack of time led to a slow pitch.

Even the pitch on offer in the first T20I in Ranchi favoured the spinners strongly though batting was still easier there.

India’s third T20I will be played on Wednesday (1 February) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Veteran cricket coach Mickey Arthur is set to join the Pakistan dressing once again, albeit as a team director and not as a head coach.

There has been a significant hiatus around the appointment of Mickey Arthur as Pakistan’s head coach for quite a while – almost after Najam Sethi was appointed as the PCB Chief, to be specific.

ESPN Cricinfo reported on Monday that Arthur is close to signing a deal with the PCB as a team director.

The PCB, as Najam Sethi had made evident in his earlier comments, was keen to have Arthur as the head coach of the side. However, he was currently coaching the English county Derbyshire and was not willing to let go of that position.

Arthur has a contract with Derbyshire till 2025. Arthur will now simultaneously take up the role of team director from 1 April, the report states.

The manner in which the operations will be conducted is quite unusual and the first of its kind in international cricket as Pakistan will not name anyone else as a head coach. Arthur will travel with the team on tours and tournaments he decides and will handpick a group of personnel to run the operations.

Grant Bradburn, who served as Pakistan’s fielding coach earlier will be a high-powered assistant coach. There will be three additional batting, bowling, and fielding coaches.

Several media reports from Pakistan organisations also termed the role of Arthur to be of an online coach.

Arthur is expected to join with the team only during the ODI World Cup and later when Pakistan tours Australia for a Test series. However, the Englishman will not be available for the Asia Cup that Pakistan is expected to host.

Arthur was Paksitan’s head coach during the 2016-2019 period and largely transformed the Pakistan squad after their slump in white-ball cricket. The highlight of his stint was when he led the Sarfaraz Ahmed-led side to the 2017 Champions Trophy win beating arch-rivals India in the finals.

Arthur had a short stint with Sri Lanka after 2019 and since then, has been with Derbyshire.

Captain Hardik Pandya was happy with India’s efforts in a close encounter against New Zealand but wasn’t pleased with the Lucknow pitch and made it clear while speaking at the post-match presentation.

The Kiwis managed only 99 runs in the first innings, thanks to a rank turner as Indian spinners wreaked havoc and restricted the New Zealand batters. However, India were made to toil hard and chased the target in 19.5 overs as New Zealand spinners returned the favour.

“I always believed that we’ll be able to finish the game, but it went quite late. All these games are important with the moments. I stayed in the dressing room till late to ensure that guys inside do not panic. You don’t need to panic because it was about rotating the strike rather than taking the pressure. We followed our basics,” skipper Hardik said after the match.

“To be honest, it was a shocker of a wicket. Both the games we have played on so far. I don’t mind difficult wickets. I am all up for that, but these two wickets were not made for T20. Somewhere down the line the curators or the grounds that we are going to play in should make sure they prepare the pitches earlier. Other than that, happy,” Hardik didn’t like the pitch and was vocal about it.

Stat attack: Chahal achieves notable feat, Suryakumar’s PoTM record, and more

The pitch assisted the spinners, and while being difficult for batters, it did steal the charm of T20I cricket as not a single six was hit throughout the course of 239 legal deliveries.

Hardik was also practical about their win and said that 120 would have been a winning total on the surface.

“Even 120 would have been a winning total. Bowlers – they stuck to their plans and ensured New Zealand batters did not rotate the strike.

“We kept rotating the spinners. Dew didn’t play much part in this. They were able to spin the ball more than us. It was carrying through well,” Hardik added.

Mitchell Santner had similar views as far as the score was concerned and said that 15 more runs would have put them on the winning side.

“It was a great game of cricket. To get it so close was a great effort from the bowlers. If we’d got an extra 10 or 15, could have been the difference,” Santner said at the post-match presentation.

The Blackcaps skipper also praised Hardik and Suryakumar Yadav who steered India home with a 31-run partnership. “The calmness of Surya and Hardik to get them over the line was pretty good.”

“We bowled 16 or 17 (17) overs of spin, definitely something different. With the bounce out there, it looked challenging. You are not sure what a good total is. 120 might have been a good score. Rotation of the strike might have been the difference,” Santner said for the surface and conditions in Lucknow.

Suryakumar Yadav hit an unbeaten 26 as India edged out New Zealand by six wickets in a low-scoring and tense second Twenty20 international, to level the series at 1-1 on Sunday.

India restricted New Zealand, who won the opener of the three-match series, to 99-8 with Yuzvendra Chahal leading the spin charge on a slow and turning pitch in Lucknow.

India then lost regular wickets as the Kiwi bowlers took it into the final over but Suryakumar, along with Hardik Pandya, anchored the tricky run chase to achieve the target with one ball to spare.

The match witnessed 30 overs of spin without a six being hit in either innings.

The series moves on to the decider in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.

Here are a few interesting statistics from the match:

—Yuzvendra Chahal overtook Bhuvneshwar Kumar as India’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is. Chahal has 91 T20I wickets after he took one wicket in the second T20I against New Zealand, while Bhuvneshwar has 90 scalps to his name.

—There were a total of 239 deliveries in the second T20I without a single six being hit. Among matches played between Full Member teams, the tally of 239 balls were the most number of deliveries in a T20I without a six being hit.

—Among the Full Member teams, New Zealand bowled the second-most number of overs by spinners in a T20I. Both Zimbabwe and Pakistan have previously bowled 18 overs of spin in a T20I, against West Indies and Australia respectively.

— Suryakumar Yadav have won most Player of the Match awards for India since 2021, as far as men’s T20Is are concerned. SKY has so far won 11 PoTM awards, with Virat Kohli behind him with just three PoTM awards since 2021.

India have secured their place in the final of the inaugural edition of the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup, following an eight-wicket victory over New Zealand in what can be called a one-sided semi-final.

The Shafali Verma-led unit will square off against powerhouse England in the summit game and will aim to take the coveted trophy home in its very first edition. In the previous stage, the English brigade defeated Australia by three runs in a low-scoring thriller. India and England will cross swords in the summit game at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom.

India have been enjoying great form throughout the tournament. They have just endured a single defeat so far in the Super Six round against Australia. In their last knockout game, the bowling unit was on top of their form as they bundled out the Kiwis for just 107 runs.

Spinner Parshavi Chopra led the destruction, picking up as many as three wickets. Coming in to chase, India lost their skipper Shafali Verma early. However, another opener Shweta Sehrawat shone with the bat and remained unbeaten at 61 runs off 45 deliveries. Besides her, Soumya Tiwari contributed 22 runs to the scoresheet.

On the other hand, England had to struggle a bit to overcome Australia in their last match. Batting first, they managed to produce just 99 runs in 20 overs. Though it looked like an easy task for the Aussies, their batting line-up also suffered a collapse. A three-wicket haul from England spinner Hannah Baker and captain Grace Scrivens’ two wickets finally brought Australia down to their knees, earning a dramatic 3-run win.

It was not Team India’s day on Friday as Mitchell Santner-led New Zealand romped to a 21-run win in the first T20I in Ranchi.

Having been put to bat by India, the Black Caps rode on fifties from Devon Conway (52) and Daryl Mitchell (59*) to post 176/6 from 20 overs, a target they successful defended.

The Indian top-order consisting of Shubman Gill (7), Ishan Kishan (4) and Rahul Tripathi (0) failed to fire, but Suryakumar Yadav (47) and Washington Sundar (50) revived the hosts, while skipper Hardik Pandya played a cameo of 21 off 20 deliveries.

Yet, wickets at regular intervals hurt the Men in Blue and the Kiwi bowlers were on top of their game. Skipper Mitchell Santner, Michael Bracewell, Lockie Ferguson all took two wickets, while Jacob Duffy and Ish Sodhi picked one each.

India will now have the opportunity to level the three-match series when the two teams travel to Lucknow for the second T20I scheduled for Sunday.

That match will take place well into the weekend, but for now, let’s take a look at some interesting statistics and records created from the series-opener in Ranchi:

  • New Zealand have most wins while batting first against India in India in men’s T20Is, winning matches four times in six matches. Other teams have collectively won by doing so, three times in 25 matches.
  • New Zealand are the only team to have defended a total of lesser than 200 against India in India in T20Is. The highest total below 200 they have defended was 196 in Rajkot in 2017, while the lowest remains 126 in a T20 World Cup match in Nagpur in 2016.
  • Washington Sundar joined Axar Patel with a 50-plus score by a batter batting a number six or lower, becoming the only two Indians to do so in a men’s T20I run-chase.
  • Mitchell Santner and Lockie Ferguson both bowled a maiden over each, and this was the first time India had two maiden overs during a men’s run chase in T20Is.
  • Rahul Tripathi joined KL Rahul in a forgettable record. Tripathi levelled KL Rahul’s record of longest ducks by Indians in men’s T20Is, being dismissed for none in the sixth ball. KL Rahul was dismissed so without scoring, also after six balls, against England in 2021.

The three-match T20I series between India and New Zealand starts on Friday with the first encounter taking place at Ranchi. Having won six ODIs on a trot against Sri Lanka and New Zealand, hosts India will enter the contest as firm favourites.

Also, with the T20 World Cup scheduled for 2024, India are not really in a hurry to fine-tune their squad with the focus being on ODIs. With the same motive, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been made to sit out of the T20I series. Making a return to the side Prithvi Shaw who last played for India in 2021. The explosive opener, however, may not get a game as India are set to use Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill as openers. But if a chance arises, Shaw could be the one to get it as another opener Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out of the series due to a wrist injury.

Whoever starts, India’s main focus will be to win the series and take the momentum into the Test series vs Australia that starts in February.

India cricketer KL Rahul and actor Athiya Shetty got married on Monday at Suniel Shetty’s Khandala farmhouse. Talking about the new bride and groom’s outfit, Athiya opted for a neutral-toned lehenga with a heavy polki embellished neckpiece and earrings. Sarfaraz Khan has become a hot topic in the Indian cricket ever since he was ignored by the selectors for the first two Tests against Australia which will be played at home in February. Sarfaraz has been in terrific form in domestic cricket, having scored 900 runs in each of the last two seasons, In the ongoing 2022-23 season, he has smashed three tons and six fifties. Still, the Mumbai batter has not been able to earn an India call-up.

Recently after the India snub, Sarfaraz took the support of his father and coach Naushad to recover from the heartbreak. Sarfaraz was in New Delhi for a Ranji game and his father flew down to the city to train with his son. Sarfaraz then went on to slam a century against Delhi in the Ranji game.

Now, another story on the close bond Sarfaraz and his father share has come out.

Speaking to Indian Express, Naushad recalled a touching story involving Sarfaraz and Sachin Tendulkar’s son Arjun, who played with the Mumbai batter at the age-group level.

Naushad said during his junior days, Sarfaraz once came to him and said: “Abbu, Arjun kitna naseebwala hai na? (Arjun is so lucky). He is Sachin sir’s son, and has cars, iPads, everything.”

The father felt helpless at the moment but soon afterward Sarfaraz expressed how special Naushad was to him. “I’m more fortunate than him. You can devote the entire day to me. His father is not able to give him any time,” Sarfaraz said.

Meanwhile, former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad has criticised the selectors for not picking Sarfaraz for the first two Tests against Australia.

“Not having him (Sarfaraz) in the Test Team despite 3 blockbuster domestic seasons is not only unfair on Sarfaraz Khan, but it’s an abuse to domestic cricket, almost as if this platform doesn’t matter,” tweeted Prasad.

India batting great Sunil Gavaskar has come out in support of Sarfaraz Khan who continues to remain outside of Team India’s scheme of things. The Mumbai batter has been in brilliant form, scoring 2,441 runs combined in the last three seasons in Ranji but has yet not been picked for the Indian Test side.

Recently, he failed to make it to the Test squad for the first two Tests against Australia in February.

There have been reports that Sarfaraz’s fitness could be a reason behind selectors ignoring his name. Gavaskar speaking about the same said that a cricketer cannot score centuries if he is unfit and also added that fitness cannot be the only criterion for picking players in the squad.

“If you are looking for only slim and trim guys, then might as well go to a fashion show and find some other models and give a bat and ball in their hands and then improve them. That’s not the way cricket goes. You have cricketers in all shapes and sizes. Don’t go by the size, go by the scores or wickets. He is not staying off the field when he scores a hundred. He is back on the field again. So, all that tells you is that the man is fit,” Gavaskar told India Today.

“How can you score runs? I think at the end of the day if you are unfit, you aren’t gonna score hundreds. Cricket fitness is the most important thing. Yo-Yo Test can’t be the only criterion. You got to make sure that the man is cricket fit as well. If the person, whoever it is, is cricket fit, then I don’t think it should be any matter,” Gavaskar added.

Gavaskar’s comments came a few days after the in-form Sarfaraz scored his third century Ranji Trophy’s ongoing season.

Deepti Sharma put in an impressive all-round show as India defeated South Africa by 27 runs in the first match of the T20I tri-series. Batting first, India scored 147/6 with major contributions coming from opener Yastika Bhatia (35), Deepti (33) and Amanjot Kaur (41 not out). In reply, South Africa were restricted to 120.

Yastika opened for India as Shafali Verma is captaining the U19 side in the T20 World Cup. India had a poor start as Smriti Mandhana (stand-in captain), Harleen Deol, Jemimah Rodrigues and Devika Vaidya got out on single digit scores. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur did not play the match due to an illness. India reeling at 69/5, Yastika and Deepti put up a 76-run partnership before Amanjot scored a quick-fire 40 from the No 7 spot to help India score a winning total.

Hosts batting also had an off day as Indian spinners scripted an excellent outing at Buffalo Park. Deepti took three wickets, while Devika added two. Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Radha Yadav and Sneh Rana also picked up a wicket each.

India will next take on West Indies in the tri-series on 23 January. West India and South Africa will play the next match of the tri-series on 21 January.

All matches are being played in East London.

India have been going through a difficult phase ahead of the much-anticipated Women’s T20 World Cup, scheduled for February this year in South Africa. After coming off an upsetting 4-1 defeat against world champions Australia in an away series in December last year, the Women in Blue will now feature in a T20I triangular series involving South Africa and West Indies.

All three sides will see the assignment as their final preparation for the World Cup and will aim to get the best out of it. The tri-series will begin on 19 January with India squaring off against hosts South Africa at Buffalo Park, East London.

The tri-series will consist of a total of seven matches. The teams will face each other twice in the first stage. Then, the top two teams with the most wins will cross swords in the summit game, which will take place on 2 February. All the fixtures will be played at Buffalo Park in East London.

Looking at the Indian squad, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led unit will miss two of their young guns Shafali Verma and wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh. Both of them are now serving the junior team in the inaugural edition of the ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup. Thus, S Meghana is expected to open the innings along with star batter Smriti Mandhana. Among others, Sushma Verma and Shikha Pandey were called up for the series and will be tested in challenging conditions.

On the other hand, all-rounder Sune Luus will captain the Proteas in the absence of their regular skipper Dane van Niekerk who failed to make it to the squad due to some fitness issues. West Indies’ iconic all-rounder Hayley Matthews will lead them during the campaign.

Ishank Kishan missed out on the Sri Lanka ODI series despite scoring the world’s fastest double century in the 50-over format in December, but he is set to get an extended run against New Zealand. However, the explosive batter will not be opening for India, instead, he will bat in the middle-order, captain Rohit Sharma confirmed.

“Ishan will be batting middle-order, I’m glad that he can get a run here after a fine knock against Bangladesh,” Rohit said on Tuesday before the first ODI vs New Zealand.

Ishan smashed 210 off 131 balls against Bangladesh in December and became the fourth Indian after Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, and Rohit Sharma to score a double century in ODIs.

Rohit also heaped praise on Mohammed Siraj who has been excellent in the ODIs lately and will be playing at home in the first ODI against New Zealand that will be hosted in Hyderabad.

“Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen how well Siraj has fared across all three formats. He has improved his bowling; his line and length have improved. He has especially worked on his outswing. Earlier, he wasn’t that renowned for swing, but he has shown his ability to swing with the new ball over the last series,” Rohit said.

“It isn’t an easy task for any batsman to face the new ball. Siraj has started understanding his bowling and what the team wants from him. Overall he has become a very good bowler for the team, one who can take wickets with the new ball and in the middle overs. He has also improved his death bowling with the IPL. We have to keep in mind that we manage him well, and keep him fresh till the World Cup and for the four Tests against Australia.”

Having stirred a debate after being left out of the squad despite a world record double hundred, Ishan Kishan is set to play in the middle-order in the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, beginning here on Wednesday.

KL Rahul’s unavailability due to personal reasons opened up a slot for Kishan.

Kishan had to sit out of the Sri Lanka series despite scoring the fastest double hundred in the history of ODIs, against Bangladesh in the preceding rubber.

Shubman Gill, who was rewarded for his consistency and picked ahead of Kishan to open alongside skipper Rohit Sharma, made the most of the opportunities with scores of 70, 21 and 116 in the Sri Lanka series.

No changes are expected to the opening combination against the Black Caps.

Kishan has batted in the middle-order thrice in the 10 ODIs he had played, and therefore, making adjustments should not be an issue.

KS Bharat, who is the second wicketkeeper in the squad, is likely to warm the bench as he is more of a cover in Rahul’s absence.

In a World Cup year, every game is significant and India would aim to build on the gains from the Sri Lanka series even though the performance of their opponents was underwhelming to say the least.

The big takeaways for India from the Sri Lanka series was the performance of the top three and Mohammed Siraj’s ability to pick up wickets with the new ball.

Like Gill and Virat Kohli, Rohit also looked in sublime touch with scores of 83 and 42 but would like to get a big hundred which has also eluded him for some time now.

Kohli though is back to scoring hundreds at will and looks hungrier for runs more than ever, which should set alarm bells ringing in the New Zealand camp.

India opener Murali Vijay has opened up on how his career was impacted playing alongside legendary opener Virender Sehwag and shared that he did not receive enough backing.

“Consciously, I didn’t get the freedom of Virender Sehwag to be honest. Whatever Sehwag got in his life, I didn’t. If I could have got that kind of backing and open-spreaded talks, I could have also tried,” Vijay told Sportstar.

“The honest thing is the team’s backing and how you can contribute to the team at an international level. It’s a high-level competition and you don’t have many chances to experiment in different ways,” the 38-year-old added.

Vijay also spoke about how he had to control his instincts while opening with Sehwag, besides praising the former cricketer for all that he did for India.

“When Sehwag was there, I felt controlling my instincts and playing was hard but to see him go through that kind of freedom was something spectacular,” he said.

“Only he could have done that. Nobody else I feel could have played like Sehwag. What he did for Indian cricket was amazing. Different… he is something else which I have seen visually. I had the privilege to interact with him. It was so simple. He kept his mantra so simple – See the ball and hit. He was in that mode; singing songs to 145-150 kph bowlers. You are experiencing something else. It’s not normal,” Vijay added.

Vijay, who last played for India in 2018, represented the national team in 61 Tests, scoring 3982 runs and making 12 centuries and 15 fifties.

Sehwag played 104 Tests for India and scored 8586 runs including 23 centuries from 32 fifties. He also slammed two triple centuries.

Indians have just celebrated the famous kite-flying festival of Makar Sankranti and a few states are still celebrating. The festival celebrates the Sun’s transition from one zodiac to another and is observed to mark a new beginning.

Indian cricket team as well marked a new beginning to the home season as they cut Sri Lanka’s kite down into bits and pieces defeating them 3-0. More importantly, except for a brief period of time in the second ODI, Sri Lanka never came close to a victory in the series.

Flying a kite is divided into four phases – lift (upward), weight (downward), thrust (push), and drag (pull). All four forces need to be in tandem to ensure a kite flies well.

India’s performance in the series was similar. A clean sweep of this stature will make the cricketing fraternity wonders – if India is indeed this good, or Sri Lanka is that poor, or maybe both.

The Indian batting order is undoubtedly intimidating, but somehow doesn’t look as frightening as England. Nonetheless, they silently made their way to post mammoth totals of 371 and 390 on both the chances they batted first.

Thrust from top order

The top order is in good form – scoring aplenty. They provided the thrust throughout the series, instilling fear in the opposition. Shubman Gill was chosen over Ishan Kishan and that sparked a massive debate. Gill, however, calmly extinguished the raging fire by scoring 207 runs at an average of 69.

Gill repaid Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid’s faith and the century in the third ODI brought style to it. Gill’s series total failed to overtake only Virat Kohli’s 283 (average of 141.5). That though was not going to be possible with Kohli at his imperious best. The first ODI proved Kohli to be lucky but he did demonstrate how to use luck.

Stat attack: Virat Kohli adds more numbers to his gallery with 46th ODI century

The third ODI, nevertheless, put forward the vintage Virat Kohli. He dominated at the start with a flurry of boundaries and established authority. Then, after a clam middle overs, toyed with the bowlers and hit sixes at will with jaw-dropping shots in the end. Kohli in white-ball cricket is at his superlative again.

Skipper Rohit has also started to once again have longer stays at the crease. While he still needs some work to be done, he looked more comfortable than the 2022 T20 World Cup days.

The middle order has been rejuvenated and has provided the much-needed weight. Shreyas Iyer has already established himself at number four. KL Rahul looks set for a long-term haul at number five. All-rounders Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel look perfect to balance the side. If there are doubts, revisit the second ODI when India were in a spot of bother.

Rahul, in fact, has played a stabilising knock twice in the last two series. Though his 73 against Bangladesh was in a losing cause, he made sure India put up a fight.

After the second ODI, while Rahul joked that batting lower in the order helps to take a nice shower after fielding, Rohit acknowledged that having Rahul at five gives the top order a cushion to bat freely.

Lift from Siraj and Co

Batting has always been India’s mainstay. What has really provided the lift is Mohammed Siraj-led bowling. India’s bowling seemed toothless in recent times, more so with the absence of Jasprit Bumrah.

In Pictures: Virat Kohli’s 166 helps India crush Sri Lanka by record 317 runs

A 10-wicket hammering against England at the T20 World Cup had raised serious question marks.

A few months later, Siraj has shown that India can survive if Bumrah is not available, at least for a while. Trivandrum pitch curator developed a slow track that did not have much for the batters or the bowlers. Siraj, somehow, was able to produce the edge of batters and also find the bat-pad gap.

Mohammed Siraj: Dale Steyn helped me with outswing

While Siraj proved to be the mainstay, Umran Malik made sure to create more selection headaches with his ability to scalp wickets in the middle overs.

Kuldeep Yadav, as well, has made a firm statement and made sure his selection is a certainty going forward. Though he might still compete with his dear friend Yuzvendra Chahal for a place in the XI.

Axar Patel (brilliant enough to be mentioned twice) came in as Ravindra Jadeja’s replacement but the latter will find it difficult to have his place back with the manner in which his stunt double has performed. Axar’s bowling and batting were rarely doubted, but his sharp reflexes at point in this series caught everyone’s eyes.

Lastly, what provides the drag to this side is the team management giving players extended runs and not changing squads often. Gill given an extended run after Kishan’s 200 and Umran trusted despite being expensive are clear indicators of the tactics.

India’s kite soared high against Sri Lanka. But as far as the World Cup is concerned, this was just the lift.

Playing against New Zealand in three days’ time will be a sterner test. The kite might feel the pressure of wind, or experience no wind at all. But if India can roll over the Kiwis, they will be a force to reckon with, more so with the World Cup at home.

India humbled Sri Lanka in Thiruvananthapuram after a mauling by mammoth 317 runs and clean-swept the series 3-0. For Sri Lanka, a series win in any format of the game in India will still be elusive.

After Virat Kohli’s 166* and Shubman Gill’s 116 set the tone for India with a 391-run total, the bowlers continued the mauling without showing any mercy.

Mohammed Siraj was the star with the ball as he bagged four wickets and missed out on the fifth despite the team supporting him in every manner possible.

India and Virat Kohli, however, stumbled many records on their way to the series domination.

10 – Virat Kohli scored his 10th century against Sri Lanka on Sunday. He now has the most number of centuries against a single opponent in ODI Cricket. The next best is again Virat Kohli’s nine centuries against West Indies and Sachin Tendulkar’s nine against Australia.

166* – Kohli’s score in Thiruvananthapuram also became his second-highest score in ODIs, only behind the famous 183* against the same opposition.

16 – Virat Kohli now has 16 unbeaten hundreds i.e. without being dismissed after hitting a century.

Virat Kohli: What Siraj has done with the new ball is outstanding

21 – Virat Kohli surpassed another Sachin Tendulkar record scoring the most number of centuries in a country – 21.  Tendulkar had 20 centuries in India.

8 – Another interesting feat is the most number of sixes hit by Kohli in an ODI. The record has been bettered after almost 10 years as he hit seven sixes against Australia in 2013 in Jaipur.

7 – Virat Kohli has the most player of the match awards against Sri Lanka in ODIs. MS Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar stand next best with six each.

3 – Virat Kohli also has the most player of the series awards against Sri Lanka in ODIs.

Apart from Kohli’s records here are some other records that India broke or created –

317 – A win by 317 runs is the highest-ever win in terms of runs. India surpassed New Zealand’s record of a 290-run win against Ireland in 2008.

India’s previous best winning margin was 257 runs against Bermuda in the 2007 World Cup. Remember Robin Utthapa’s catch in the slips by Dwayne Leverock.

26 – Sri Lanka have played 26 bilateral series against India in India but failed to win one. While India have won 22 of those, four did not produce results. This was also India’s 10th consecutive bilateral series win against Sri Lanka.

4 – Mohammed Siraj’s four wickets is the joint most for an Indian bowler in the first 10 overs of an ODI. He equaled Jasprit Bumrah (vs England in 2022), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (vs Sri Lanka in 2013), and Javagal Srinath (vs Sri Lanka in 2003).

22 – Sri Lanka were all out in 22 overs which is the shortest in terms of number of overs in India.
