Day 4 preview: Australia will hope to wrap up the three-Test series against South Africa with a game to spare on Day 4 of the second Test in Melbourne.

Australia, who currently are on top of the World Test Championship table, declared on a mammoth first innings score of 575/8 on Wednesday following a double-hundred from opener David Warner as well as wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey’s 111-run knock.

This was after they bundled the Proteas out for 189 following a five-for from all-rounder Cameron Green, who would then go on to slam an unbeaten 51 during the Australian innings despite nursing a finger injury.

South Africa would then got off to a horror start in their second essay as skipper Dean Elgar was caught-behind off Pat Cummins’ bowling for a three-ball duck. Sarel Erwee and Theunis de Bruyn would then bat out the remaining overs of the evening session, a little more than five, as South Africa ended the day on 15 for the loss of one wicket.

An Australian victory would further bolster their chances of making the final after having narrowly missed out on a top-two finish in the previous cycle, which New Zealand won after beating India in the final in Southampton. While hoping to win the remaining game at Sydney, South Africa would also have to sweep the two-match series against West Indies at home while also depending on the results in the India vs Australia series that takes place in February to qualify.

David Warner smashed a brilliant double ton in his 100th Test to help Australia take big lead against South Africa in the ongoing Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Tuesday.

Facing pressure to retain his place in Australia’s team, Warner defied his critics and heatwave conditions with a spectacular return to form, scoring a memorable 200.

Leading the three-match series one-nil, Australia had resumed at 45-1 in sunny conditions in reply to South Africa’s lacklustre first-innings total of 189. By stumps, Australia was 386-3, an overall lead of 197, with Alex Carey not out on nine and Travis Head unbeaten on 48.

While Australia is in a strong position, two of the home side’s pace bowlers, Mitchell Starc and first-innings hero Cameron Green, are nursing finger injuries ahead of South Africa’s second innings.

Steve Smith (85) and Warner (200 retired hurt) shared an entertaining third-wicket partnership of 239 runs, as Australia took control of the match in stifling conditions. Smith’s exit at 314-3 was followed by Warner’s dramatic departure 15 runs later, retired hurt due to cramp, with the crowd of 42,614 on their feet.

Australia will now aim to extend their lead on Day 3 of the second Test.

Day 2 preview: Australia will aim to take a big step forward towards clinching the Test series against South Africa with a game to spare on Day 2 of the second Test in Melbourne.

The Aussies continued their dominant run in the home summer on the opening day of the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, bowling South Africa out for 189 after opting to field.

All-rounder Cameron Green was the toast of the Australian bowling performance on Monday, collecting his maiden five-for (5/27) three days after becoming the second-most expensive player in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Marnus Labuschagne also played a crucial role in allowing the hosts to seize control through his efforts on the field, running Proteas captain Dean Elgar out with a brilliant direct hit before grabbing a stunner at mid off to dismiss Khaya Zondo.

The South Africans were staring at the possibility of getting bowled out for less than 100 for a second straight outing when wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne and all-rounder Marco Jansen came to their rescue with a fighting sixth-wicket partnership worth 112.

Verreynne and Jansen batted the entire afternoon session out and remained resolute in their defence despite facing hostile spells from opposition skipper Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc as well as a series of testing deliveries from Nathan Lyon, giving the  South Africans hope of going past the 250-mark at one point.

Green, however, would end up dismissing both set batters, and would later also account for the wickets of Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi as South Africa ended up losing their last five wickets for just 10 runs.

Veteran opener David Warner then got off to an inspired start in his 100th Test appearance and was batting on 32 at close of play with the hosts 45/1, losing the wicket of Usman Khawaja off Rabada’s bowling early.

India vs Bangladesh 2nd Test Live:

On Day 3, often termed as the moving day, India were rocked by Bangladesh and more so by their nemesis this tour Mehidy Hasan Miraz. After dominating for a major part of the day, India were left on the back foot in the final session as the hosts' tail counter-attacked with the bat and then scalped 4 Indian top order wickets to create a hara-kiri of sorts in the dressing room. India now need 100 runs. Axar Patel has looked poised in the middle. Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer are yet to bat and that is the biggest positive for India. Bangladesh are expected to give the ball to Mehidy Hasan right from the beginning. We will know in a while, what is about to happen. Hello and Welcome to Day 4 of the 2nd Test which is expected to end in the first session either ways!

Day 3 Report: Bangladesh fought their way into what earlier appeared a lost cause on Saturday, knocking over four Indian wickets to leave the visitors teetering after Liton Das compiled a gritty half-century on the third day of the second Test in Dhaka.

The Bangladesh bowlers were given 145 runs to defend after Liton’s steely 73 and a wagging tail steered the hosts to 231 all out.

Despite the subpar score, spinners Mehidy Hasan and Shakib Al Hasan rose to the challenge, reducing India to 45-4 at stumps with 100 still left to chase, leaving the match unexpectedly hanging in the balance.

Mehidy claimed three wickets after Shakib’s initial breakthrough, removing Cheteshwar Pujara (six), Shubman Gill (seven) and Virat Kohli (one). Shakib started the slide with the wicket of captain KL Rahul for two.

Axar Patel survived the day to stay unbeaten on 26 alongside nightwatchman Jaydev Unadkat (three), with first-innings heroes Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer yet to come in.

Liton said after the close of play that Bangladesh could keep India under pressure and eke out a win with early wickets on Sunday.

“It is possible to win if we can take one or two more wickets in the early morning,” he said.

“Rishabh and Iyer are yet to come, they are of course good players, but as I said if we can take one or two more wickets they will remain under pressure.”

For India, building a partnership remains vital.

“I feel we should not overthink that four wickets have gone. If one of our batsmen get set, there won’t be much pressure on us,” fast bowler Mohammed Siraj said.

Axar had earlier downed three Bangladesh batters and all of India’s bowlers were among the wickets.

But Liton rode his luck in an innings where he was dropped twice by Kohli — first off Axar and then Ravichandran Ashwin — to score what could be 73 vital runs.

There was little support for him on the other end after opener Zakir Hasan (51) fell soon after lunch until wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan joined him at the crease and the pair compiled an aggressive 46-run stand.

That stand was broken by Axar when he drew Nurul out of his crease to set up an easy stumping for Pant.

Liton then added another brisk 60 runs alongside Taskin Ahmed (31 not out) before he was bowled by a Siraj delivery that nipped back in and found the gap between bat and pad.

Even with those small pockets of resistance, India looked to be in complete control of the match, picking up regular wickets with all their bowlers getting a part of the spoils.

Ashwin had Najmul Hossain trapped leg-before for five in the second over of the day before Siraj removed Bangladesh’s first-innings top-scorer Mominul Haque for the same score.

Unadkat then got skipper Shakib (13) to spoon a length delivery to Gill at cover in his first over of the day.

With the hosts struggling, Axar added to their misery on the stroke of lunch, trapping the experienced Mushfiqur Rahim lbw for nine.

He added two more to his tally after the break, getting Mehidy lbw for nought before dismissing Nurul for 31.

Siraj, Ashwin, and a run-out accounted for the final three wickets.

The Bangladesh bowlers had given their side a glimmer of hope in Friday’s final session, restricting India’s lead to 87 runs just when the visitors looked like they might amass a mammoth score.

Pant and Iyer were running rampant, with both crossing fifty at a rapid pace, ending at 93 and 87 respectively, but Bangladesh knocked over the last six Indian wickets for 61 runs to restrict India to 314.

India won the first Test of the two-match series by 188 runs in Chittagong.

India vs Bangladesh 2nd Test Live:

29.2 Axar Patel is gone now! Mehidy Hasan Miraz running riot - a five-wicket haul for the spinner. The southpaw had looked so strong till now. This was bowled short and Axar tried to play it on the backfoot. The ball hits his pads and ricochets on the stumps. Bangladesh right on top, all over India. Axar Patel b Mehidy Hasan Miraz 34(69)

India 74/7 after 30 overs

India vs Bangladesh 2nd Test Live:

27.6 A big wicket for Bangladesh! Rishabh Pant is gone now. Excellent bowling by Mehidy Hasan, beats the batter in defense and the ball catches him plumb in front of the wickets. That was bowled on good length and went straight after the pitch. Pant has a discussion with Axar Patel but decides against review. Good to not get desperate in such a situation. Rishabh Pant lbw b Mehidy Hasan Miraz 9(13)

India vs Bangladesh 2nd Test Live:

24.3 Jaydev Unadkat has been given out now after a confident appeal from Shakib Al Hasan. The batter has asked for a review but it seems like it is going to be wasted. The ball brushed the pad right in front of the middle stump and there was no going back from there. A waste of a review. India lose first of the day, fifth in the innings. Jaydev Unadkat lbw b Shakib Al Hasan 13(16)

India: 56/5

09:08 (IST)

23.4 So immediately after that close survival, Unadkat has gone big. A slog sweep to Mehidy Hasan! This was bowled a lot fuller, Unadkat gets on his knee and tonks it over mid-wicket. Quite a bit of action in first over itself.

Pacer Mukesh Kumar was one of the surprise picks at the IPL Auction 2023 when Delhi Capitals splashed Rs 5.5 crore on the 29-year-old bowler in Kochi on Friday.

However, for the keenest of followers of Indian cricket, it was a day of joy as finally, a strong Ranji Trophy performer was finally getting his due after years of toying hard in the domestic circuit. Back in 2020, Mukesh featured in a Ranji Trophy final and was the strike bowler of the Bengal cricket team leading to the final with 32 wickets.

Who is Mukesh Kumar?

Born in Bihar’s Kakarkund village in Gopalganj district, Kumar found his way to the Bengal cricket team through the trials of the Vision 2020 programme at the Eden Gardens in 2014. The opportunity came up when his father, Kashinath, moved to Kolkata and was driving a taxi for a living. Mukesh, however, didn’t join his father immediately while his father saw a different dream for his son. He wanted Mukesh to join the army and Mukesh made two failed attempts to join the army as well.

IPL 2023 Auction: Players sold/unsold

Kashinath finally brought his son to Kolkata in 2012, hoping to find him a job. Mukesh continued with the ‘Khep khela’ or tennis ball cricket before he joined a second division CAB league club Bani Niketan and learned to play with the red cherry.

Mukesh found his way to the first division and soon came the opportunity of Vision 2020 trials. The trials were held by experienced Bengal pacer Ranadeb Bose under the guidance of VVS Laxman, Waqar Younis, and Muttiah Muralitharan.

Ranadeb was impressed with the youngster and took him under his wing before Mukesh made his domestic debut in Rohtak with an impressive haul of 4/53.

Since then Mukesh became a regular member of the Bengal squad before in 2020 Ranji show convinced the selectors to bring him to India A teams. 2022 turned out to be his year as well as he impressed with a 6/40 spell against Bangladesh, which India won by an innings and 123 runs.

He found a place in the ODI squad against South Africa as well and was in the A tours for New Zealand before Bangladesh

“I think he deserves this. He was always a very humble boy, down to earth and so unassuming. He is special,” Arun told Hindustan Times. “He is a special act, a genuine wicket-taker, and can change the game completely. In the red-ball format, I believe he is one of the top three bowlers in the country. He may go for runs but he will get you wickets that others can’t.”

Joshua Little on Friday became the first Irishman to get an IPL contract as the southpaw was bought for Rs 4.4 crore by Gujarat Titans during the IPL Auction 2023 in Kochi. Little entered the auction at a base price of Rs 50 lakh.

IPL 2023 Auction: Players sold/unsold

Gujarat Titans remained keen on buying Little with his bidding price going up with Lucknow Super Giants also entering the fray. Titans eventually claimed the Irishman with a winning bid of Rs 4.4 crore.

The 23-year-old pacer has been an influential bowler for the Ireland national team and has a hat-trick to his name during the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2022 against New Zealand. He dismissed Kane Williamson, James Neesham, and Mitchell Santner in the penultimate over of the innings to achieve the feat. He only became the sixth bowler to take a hat-trick at a T20 World Cup while finishing with a spell of 3/22. He was the second Irishman to take a World Cup hat-trick behind Curtis Campher.

During the World Cup, he took 11 wickets at an impressive economy rate of 7.00. His average in the format is 20.46 while the overall economy is 7.34.

IPL 2023, Complete squads: GT | SRH | RR | MI | PBKS | CSK | RCB | KKR | LSG | DC

At the IPL 2022, Little joined Chennai Super Kings as a net bowler but left the camp midway through the season as he wasn’t pleased with the way he was treated during his short stint with the four-time champions.

“I was told it was something it wasn’t. I was told before I went that I’m a net bowler, and if someone gets injured then there’s a chance I play,” Little told Cricbuzz. “But I couldn’t bowl when I wanted, I’d get two overs (in training) and think, ‘Two overs, I’m halfway across the world here!’ Maybe I was naive because I played in the Lankan Premier League and T10, I had a good year behind me. I’m an international cricketer; it didn’t seem right.

“When I found out I was a net bowler that was required to bowl at someone when the slingers were tired, I was like ‘get me out of here’ – which is probably why they’ll never have me back because I left after two weeks.”

India vs Bangladesh LIVE Cricket Score

Day 2 is of massive importance.

Given that hosts were bowled out for 227 on the first day itself, the Day 2 could become the most crucial of all in the second Test. What happens today could decide the result and India will look to seize the opportunity.

08:25 (IST)

There's also the IPL 2023 mini auction today.

The event will be taking place in Kochi and is scheduled to start at 2.30 PM.

Here's all you need to know about the auction.

08:14 (IST)

IND vs BAN Live

Umesh Yadav after Day 1: "There was a bit in the pitch for the fast bowlers and few balls were kicking up. It was important to keep bowling in the right areas and tried to do the same. Dry grass is there and it's a bit spongy. We were trying to reverse the ball and bowl wicket-to-wicket, we got wickets because of that."

08:04 (IST)

Unadkat is back playing Test cricket for India after a gap of 12 years and 2 days which is the longest interval between Test appearances for any player in the 21st century.

Here he speaks about his comeback:

08:01 (IST)

Exactly what happened on Day 1?

Umesh Yadav had four wickets, Jaydev Unadkat on return took two and the rest went to R Ashwin as Bangladesh were bowled out of 227 after batting first. India then had a steady start (19/0) before early stumps was called due to poor light.

For everything else: Read the key moments wrap from Day 1

07:55 (IST)

Welcome back! We are building up for the Day 2 of the second Test between India and Bangladesh. India are 19/0 after Day 1 and trail Bangladesh by 208 runs. Bangladesh were bowled out for 227 in the first innings after winning the toss. Stay tuned for live updates.

Day 2 preview: India will look to strengthen their case in the second Test against Bangladesh in Mirpur, when Day 2 gets underway on Friday.

Bangladesh had won the toss on the opening day on Thursday and opted to bat.

However, barring a gritty knock of 84 from Mominul Haque, nothing much went according to the hosts’ plan as they were bowled out for 227, and that too from being 213/5 at one stage.

Najmul Hossain Shanto (24), Litton Das (25) and Mushfiqur Rahim (26) all got starts, but just could not capitalise on it. Even skipper Shakib Al Hasan fell for a low score of 16.

Jaydev Unadkat, playing his first Test for India in 12 years, finished with figures of 2/50, while Umesh Yadav and R Ashwin scalped four wickets each.

At stumps on Thursday, India were 19/0, with stand-in skipper KL Rahul (3*) and Shubman Gill (14*) unbeaten. The trail the hosts by 208 runs going into day two.

India are currently leading the two-match series, after a comprehensive 188-run win in the first Test in Chattogram last week.

Fast bowler Jaydev Unadkat made his comeback to the Indian Test team after a gap of 12 years as he replaced spinner Kuldeep Yadav in the second match against Bangladesh in Dhaka on Thursday.

Unadkat last played a Test for India in December 2010 in Centurion which was his debut Test. Since then the pacer had not been seen in whites for India. Unadkat is also second on the list of players who have missed the most consecutive Tests between their appearances with 118 Tests.

Unadkat was selected to the Test squad on the back of some serious performance in the domestic circuit for Saurashtra. Besides his bowling, the pacer has also shown leadership acumen to make his mark in the Indian circuit.

Kuldeep Yadav, who won the player of the match award in the first Test, was left out to include Unadkat and the decision came as a surprise amongst the fans. The spinner was brought into the side after 18 months and was dropped despite of a match-winning performance.

“Kuldeep misses out and Unadkat comes in. Unfortunate decision for us to leave him (Kuldeep) out but it’s an opportunity for Unadkat,” KL Rahul said at the toss.

The pitch seemed to have a bit of grass and the Shere Bangla Stadium in Dhaka has assisted pacers in the recent past.

Unadkat was called to the Indian Test squad after Mohammed Shami was injured and ruled out of the team. However, Unadkat had issues with his visa for Bangladesh and was stuck in India, delaying his joining to the Indian squad.

Playing XI

India: KL Rahul(c), Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant(wk), Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Jaydev Unadkat

Bangladesh: Najmul Hossain Shanto, Zakir Hasan, Mominul Haque, Litton Das, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan(c), Nurul Hasan(wk), Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam, Khaled Ahmed, Taskin Ahmed

The BCCI annual player contracts 2022-23 are all set to be revealed and promotion is very much on the cards for Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav. While the all-rounder is the frontrunner to succeed Rohit Sharma as India’s T20I captain, India’s very own ‘Mr 360’ has dominated the T20 format this year, and how. Surya has been very consistent in the shortest format, has already broken into the ODI setup, and is now awaiting the inevitable Test call. Surya is currently in Grade C of the contracts.

A likely double promotion for Hardik could well be the case as he will be steering the T20I ship in the near future and is one of the most important figures in India’s white-ball set-up. The 29-year-old is currently in the Grade C bracket.

2023 and 2024 are very important white-ball years for the Indian cricket team with the 50-over World Cup in 2023 and then the T20 World Cup in 2024. Plenty of senior pros are expected to not feature in the 2024 T20 WC, and a roadmap for the young brigade under Hardik is already being put in place.

Officially, the call on T20I captaincy is not on the 12-point agenda for the 21 December BCCI Apex Council meeting but whispers of Hardik’s elevation as the next T20I skipper are loud and it’s a matter of time before he takes over and charts the way forward for Indian cricket team in the shortest format.

Promotions, demotions and inclusions

Another strong performer to break into the Grade A category could be Axar Patel who has been playing the three formats for India consistently, and doing the job effectively in Ravindra Jadeja’s absence.

Shubman Gill, too, has been very impressive in Test and ODI outings recently and the elegant opener is set for a promotion to, if not A, then Grade B. ‘Palghar Express’ Shardul Thakur has faded away from Test and T20Is and is likely to be demoted to Grade C category.

After regaining his mojo, and recently staging a successful return to Test cricket, Kuldeep Yadav could well see himself back with a central contract in the Grade C category. Aggressive wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan looks like the frontrunner to break into the Grade C category – which could also see the addition of all-rounder Deepak Hooda.

Holding on

The likes of Umesh Yadav, Shikhar Dhawan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal and Deepak Chahar are likely to hold on to their Grade C contract. While Umesh is part of the Test set-up, Yuzi, Chahar, Sundar & Dhawan are the white-ball specialists.

Dhawan now only plays the ODIS, even led the ODI team on quite a few occasions in absence of the regulars, and last season saw Bhuvi feature mostly in the T20Is.

Set to lose contracts

Ishant Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Mayank Agarwal, Hanuma Vihari and Wriddhiman Saha are all but certain to lose their central contract. While Ishant, Rahane and Saha are well and truly out of the Test set-up, the road back is an extremely tough and competitive one for both Agarwal and Vihari.

Rahane, Ishant, Vihari and Saha were the Test specialists and Mayank, who did feature in few ODIs, is unlikely to stage a white-ball return in the near future.

2021-22 player contracts:

Grade A+: Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah

Grade A: R Ashwin, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Rishabh Pant

Grade B: Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Shreyas Iyer, Mohammed Siraj, Ishant Sharma

Grade C: Shikhar Dhawan, Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Hardik Pandya, Washington Sundar, Deepak Chahar, Shubman Gill, Yuzvendra Chahal, Hanuma Vihari, Suryakumar Yadav, Wriddhiman Saha, Mayank Agarwal

The Grade A+ players receive Rs 7 crore, Grade A get Rs 5 crore, Grade B get Rs 3 crore and Grade C players get Rs 1 crore each. The players continue to get the regular match fee, which is not included in this amount.
