With a lead of 292 runs in reply to Bangladesh A’s 112 in the first innings, the Indians consolidated their momentum, picking up from where they left off on Day 1, at 120/0.

Both Jaiswal (145) and skipper Abhimanyu (142) scored tons to help visitors surge ahead, and forged a 283-run stand for the first wicket before the former departed. At stumps on Day 2, Tilak Varma (26*) and wicketkeeper-batter Upendra Yadav (27*) were unbeaten for the visitors.

Australia vs West Indies 1st Test Live: The West Indies have had little success in the shortest form of cricket lately but veteran Jason Holder says that won’t diminish the Test team’s ambitions for the two-match series against Australia.

The Caribbean side lost in the preliminary stage of the Twenty20 World Cup in late October in Australia, beaten by both Ireland and Scotland. Those losses meant the team which won the T20 World Cup in 2012 and 2016 didn’t qualify for the main tournament.

Coach Phil Simmons has quit and the two Tests in Australia — the second a day-night match beginning 8 December in Adelaide — will be his last in charge.

Holder says the Test team is going in the opposite direction — unbeaten this year with series wins at home against Bangladesh and England.

Meanwhile, Warner said he will reassess his future at the end of the Test summer in Australia, with the opener likely to be the first of the current team to retire from red-ball cricket.

The 36-year-old Warner is on track to play in his 100th Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground beginning 26 December against South Africa. In 96 Tests, Warner has scored 7,817 runs at an average of 46.52 with 24 centuries and 34 half-centuries.

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the second one-day international between New Zealand and India at Hamilton's Seddon Park. The Men in Blue will be hoping to bounce back from the seven-wicket loss at Eden Park in order to keep their hopes of winning both trophies in the ongoing tour alive.

Preview: Team India will be hoping to bounce back from the one-sided defeat in Auckland and keep the three-match series alive when they take on New Zealand in the second ODI in Hamilton on Sunday.

India suffered their first defeat of the tour of New Zealand, which is taking place right after the T20 World Cup, after winning the T20I series as the failed to defend a target of 307, thanks to the brilliance of Tom Latham and Black Caps skipper Kane Williamson.

Latham struck a career-best 145 not out, sharing an unconquered fourth-wicket stand worth 221 as the pair rescued the hosts from a spot of bother and took the momentum away from the Men in Blue, ensuring they got home comfortably in the end.

Earlier, stand-in skipper Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill shared an opening stand worth 124 while scoring 72 and 50 respectively while Shreyas Iyer took over once the set pair departed and stayed at the crease till the final over, top-scoring with a 76-ball 80.

The series opener also witnessed Umran Malik make his ODI debut. The Jammu and Kashmir pacer not only hit express speeds of 153kmph, but also opened his account with the ball, dismissing both Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell.

Squads:

New Zealand: Finn Allen, Devon Conway, Kane Williamson(c), Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham(w), Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Adam Milne, Matt Henry, Tim Southee, Lockie Ferguson, Michael Bracewell, James Neesham

India: Shikhar Dhawan(c), Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant(w), Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal, Deepak Hooda, Kuldeep Yadav, Deepak Chahar

Jasprit Bumrah has been missing in action for quite sometime now and has already sat out of two major events this year — the Asia Cup as well as the T20 World Cup.

And the Indian pace spearhead isn’t part of India’s tours of New Zealand and Bangladesh either, given he is yet to be declared fully fit from the back stress injury that had ruled him out of the T20 World Cup that took place in Australia and concluded earlier this month.

Bumrah, however, has given an update on his fitness status through a video posted on his official Instagram account in which he’s seen training hard in an indoor facility. “Never easy, but always worth it,” is what the Mumbai Indians pacer wrote in the caption of the video posted on Friday.

A post shared by jasprit bumrah (@jaspritb1)

The Gujarat pacer, who has had a meteoric rise in international cricket since making his debut in the tour of Australia in 2016, had earlier captained India in their rescheduled Test against England in Birmingham, but had shown signs of fitness issues during the white-ball fixtures against Jos Buttler’s men that followed. Bumrah had skipped India’s tours of the West Indies and Zimbabwe, and was ultimately ruled out of the Asia Cup, where India had failed to progress beyond the Super Four stage.

Bumrah had made a comeback during India’s home T20I series against Australia, raising hopes of him featuring in India’s T20 World Cup campaign, only for the back problem to resurface days before India’s opening game against Pakistan. India would go on to top their group in the Super 12 stage before suffering a humiliating 10-wicket loss against eventual champions England in Adelaide.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja has reportedly issued a stern warning to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), threatening to boycott the 2023 ODI World Cup if India failed to show up for the Asia Cup that is to be hosted in Pakistan next year.

BCCI secretary and Asian Cricket Council chief Jay Shah had earlier said that the Indian team would not be travelling to Pakistan for the Asia Cup, and that they would instead play at a neutral venue, ruffling feathers among the Pakistani cricketing community and causing the PCB to convene an emergency meeting with the ACC.

Raja, a former Pakistan batter who had taken up a career in commentary before being appointed the board chief, further threw shade at the Men in Blue, saying that the Babar Azam-led Pakistan team had defeated the “billion-dollar economy team” twice in less than a year.

“If Pakistan doesn’t take part in the World Cup scheduled in India next year, who will watch it? We have a clear stand: If the Indian team comes here then we will go for the World Cup. If they don’t come then they can play the World Cup without us.

“We will adopt an aggressive approach. Our team is showing performance. I’ve always said we need to improve the economy of Pakistan cricket, and that can only happen when we perform well. In the 2021 T20 World Cup, we beat India. We beat India in the T20 Asia Cup. In one year, the Pakistan cricket team defeated a billion-dollar economy team twice,” Raja was quoted as telling Urdu News.

The 2008 Asia Cup was the last multi-nation tournament that Pakistan had hosted, before the terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team the following year brought cricket in the South Asian nation to a screeching halt and forced the PCB to conduct its home games in the UAE.

The sport, however, has been limping back to normalcy in recent years with teams such as England, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa besides Pakistan’s Asian neighbours (except India) visiting the country for bilateral assignments, including Test cricket.

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the first ODI between India and New Zealand at the Eden Park in Auckland. Team India will be hoping to maintain their winning run in the tour of New Zealand, having earlier taken the T20I series 1-0.

Preview: Team India will begin its road to the 2023 World Cup on home soil when it takes on New Zealand in the first of three ODIs in Auckland on Friday.

Shikhar Dhawan once again returns as the stand-in captain of the Indian team in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma and other seniors such as Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah. Dhawan takes over from all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who led the Men in Blue to a 1-0 series win in the T20I leg of their tour of New Zealand that took place right after the T20 World Cup in Australia.

Pandya has been rested from the ODIs along with the likes of veteran seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Mohammed Siraj and wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan while Shardul Thakur, Shahbaz Ahmed, Deepak Chahar and Kuldeep Sen have been included.

Kane Williamson, who recently returned to form after struggling with the bat for the most part during the T20 World Cup, continues to lead the Black Caps in the one-dayers after the T20I series. He led the Kiwis in the 2nd T20I, which Team India won by a comfortable margin of 65 runs, but missed out on the third game due to a medical appointment, leading to senior bowler Tim Southee taking over the reins.

Squads:

New Zealand: Finn Allen, Devon Conway(w), Kane Williamson(c), Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell, Michael Bracewell, James Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Lockie Ferguson, Tim Southee, Adam Milne, Matt Henry, Tom Latham.

Heads were expected to roll after the conclusion of the 2022 T20 World Cup as India’s wait for an ICC Trophy stretched for another year and, expectedly, the selection panel headed by Chetan Sharma became the first casualty as the BCCI sacked the entire committee earlier this week and invited fresh applications. During Sharma’s tenure as the chairman, India had disappointing outings in two T20 World Cups and the period saw some debatable decisions. Not to forget how the entire Virat Kohli captaincy episode unfolded. The next two years are very important white-ball years for the Indian cricket team with the 50-over and T20 World Cups and a lot of changes are expected to happen to meet the demands of the two formats, especially T20.

For years now, IPL has served as a feeder system to the Indian cricket team as the world’s premier T20 league not only allows the players to showcase their talent on the big stage – against and with top players from around the world – but also puts Indian youngsters in the spotlight. The tournament, however, follows a very different approach from the Indian cricket setup and the biggest difference is the way squads/teams are put together in the T20 league. Yes, there are auctions which take place, but the year-long activity of scouting and identifying the right people for the right job is something from the Indian cricket board that can draw some inspiration. It’s high time the T20 format is looked at from a different perspective, ditching the old-school approach, which frankly seems quite outdated.

State-fed model

The Indian selectors mostly operate on the state-fed model where players are picked on the basis of their performances in the domestic competitions – Ranji Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy. However, a good show in the domestic circuit doesn’t always guarantee a national call-up and the IPL show certainly adds a major catalyst. But on most occasions, it’s these competitions which are the reference point for national selectors and a solid IPL show can certainly fast-track the journey. Most on-site visits are around these games and various selectors are spotted in the stands when these fixtures are underway.

IPL, however, is different

IPL teams follow a much more comprehensive approach and player scouting is a year-long activity. After speaking to a lot of franchises, it’s clear that the scouts never rest. The senior age group is where the scouting begins and most IPL scouts could be found on the sidelines of these competitions. Mumbai Indians, for instance, have a network featuring plenty of former, and a lot of recently retired, cricketers, to spot the right people for the right job.

Don’t be surprised if you see a John Wright baking under the sun during a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy fixture or a Parthiv Patel making the trip to Jhajjhar to watch a Men’s U-25 fixture between Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. For Mumbai, it’s being the quiet spectator at competitive games and then inviting the shortlisted players to their training facilities for a 7-10 day hit. MI were the first team to go scouting in the age-group fixtures and it helped them wider the search and player pool. Even the camps at their training facilities are not meant to be mere trials. They treat it as an opportunity for the franchise to work closely with the players they see potential in. And once they identify you, they groom you and back you.

Academies and the X-factor

While most teams are heavy on scouting, there are some like Delhi Capitals who are very academy driven. The franchise has tie-ups with a lot of clubs, in the capital city, and spot and nurture talent around the year. They even participate in pan-India tournaments, like the JP Atray Memorial, with their Development Squad and identify players who could take the next step in the scouting process. A team like Lucknow Supergiants, one of the two new teams to join the IPL this year, prefers to not keep a jumbo squad and for them, it’s more about finding the right people for the right job. Gautam Gambhir, just like he did with KKR, follows that X-factor approach and fills in the blanks when he spots the required skill set.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by DC Academy (@dccricketacademy)

“Gautam has a set of his people who he trusts with information regarding players. But then he would personally watch the player, without the player’s knowledge of course, and then come to a conclusion of whether to invite him to the camp or not. If he’s not convinced, he would give his comprehensive feedback,” a source close to the former Indian cricketer tells us.

Gautam’s former IPL team KKR, however, follows a very scout-driven approach led by AR Srikkanth. Srikkanth also performs that role for other teams of the group, and foreign scouting falls in place with his involvement in different leagues. Plus, the advantage of Srikkanth’s previous stints with various teams and set-ups, only helps KKR create a strong database. At the local and domestic levels, it’s Abhishek Nayar’s inputs which come in handy for the team.

Camps, simulations and trials

Unlike the state association trials, which are mostly jumbo in nature, IPL teams prefer a very format-driven approach and the camps/trials are dominated by match simulations. An opening batsman, identified by the scouts, is given a certain target – say to score 50 in the first four overs with his partner. Similarly, a middle-order batsman’s ability to play against spin and rotate the strike comes into the picture. Again, the X-factor!

For bowlers, it’s about the holding job, variations and nailing yorkers at the death and the ability to make inroads with the new ball. Even when the players bat in pairs, their individual contributions and the manner in which they sync with their partners come into play. It’s not always that a player is picked on basis of one camp. There are some who have had numerous camps with various teams and an opportunity sometimes comes with the team they haven’t attended trials for. That’s the beauty of IPL and auctions.

Net bowlers and ready replacements

The concept of net bowlers came into play with the bio-bubble restrictions and teams, both IPL and national teams, preferred to carry jumbo squads to have both replacements and quality net sessions in check. Earlier, it was either the local state associations or the visiting country which would provide bowlers for net sessions.

COVID-19 changed the scenario here and both the franchises and the Indian cricket team wouldn’t complain. While the Dubai leg of IPL saw net bowlers getting picked midway through the tournament, even by the teams they weren’t travelling with, the Indian cricket team made use of this during the away Test series against Australia when ill-timed injuries made way for net bowlers in the Playing XI.

Lessons from the IPL

One thing is clear from the way franchises operate, it makes a lot of sense to treat the format like a different beast and very professionally. Unlike the fifty-over and Test format, T20 allows very little time to return in the game as momentum can swing in a space of few deliveries. So is the old-school selection approach featuring zonal selectors, with the criteria mentioned by the Indian cricket board, the way forward? Or can the board take cues from the way IPL machinery operates, independently, and put together a system in place which treats the form exclusively?

Revisiting the TRDO?

The last time the Indian cricket team took giant strides forward (winning the T20 World Cup and 50-over WC in space of four years and dominating Tests) and unearthed talent for the future was when the Indian cricket board initiated the TRDO (Talent Resource Development Officer’s) wing in the early 2000s. The system saw the likes of MS Dhoni, Ishant Sharma, Piyush Chawla and RP Singh arrive at the big stage and serve Indian cricket for a long time.

The brainchild of talent spotter and writer Makarand Waigankar, the system saw immediate and long-term results. If in place, what should the TRDO wing for T20s look like?

In a chat with Cricketnext.com, Waigankar listed a few points which must be followed to meet the demands of the format and the growing cricket ecosystem of India.

“Look at the number of games being played right now. So many matches are being played right now, in the 1000s. It’s very important to first use technology and have a strong database in place,” says Waigankar.

Will a T20-only TRDO help? “Yes, certainly,” says Waigankar. “Pick TRDOs from various zones and ensure a person from the zone is not operating in that. So the person from the North goes South, from the South, goes North and so on. Just get the bias out of the picture and then blood the talent when it’s ready. Do not waste crucial years of a player on the bench. I identified Sanju Samson for KKR when he was 14. Since then, how many games has he played for India? What’s the point then? Find the players, back them, and play them. Simple,” he adds.

Getting rid of the traditional approach

Selectors from each zone, one chairman and the same old drill are something which can be revisited to meet the demands of the T20 format especially. BCCI has invited applications for the new set of selectors and chairman and the criteria for applying are the same as the last time around. 1000s of applications are expected to reach the Indian cricket board’s inbox when the deadline ends on November 28.

“What is this, a corporate job application? More than 2000 applications are expected to reach BCCI’s inbox. Who is going to go through those? What’s the point of such a tedious process? This is a mockery of the entire process and the setup. Not needed at all. Either has the criteria revisited. So many people are going to meet these criteria. Just like it makes sense to have the different white ball and red ball captains, it’s important to have different selectors for both red and white ball format,” says Waigankar.

Mission 2024

Mission Melbourne was unaccomplished for Team India as their wait for an ICC trophy continued after the semi-final defeat in the 2022 edition. It remains to be seen what happens on the team and leadership front, but with selectors being the first set of changes, it’s important this crucial piece comes together before the blueprint for the 2024 edition is put in place.

After winning the title in the inaugural edition, India have reached the final only once – in the 2014 edition – and India would want to change things around as they hit the road to the 2024 edition which will be jointly hosted by the United States and the West Indies.

The T20 World Cup in Australia was a bittersweet moment for Dinesh Karthik. The wicketkeeper-batter, who made a spectacular comeback into the Indian side this year, was included in the T20 World Cup squad after a long time. But Karthik failed to make his mark in the high-stakes tournament.

India endured a crushing defeat against England in the semi-finals, ending their dreams of lifting the trophy for a second time. Now, Dinesh Karthik, who is presently being rested by the selectors, has put up a cryptic post, prompting speculations about his retirement.

“Worked hard towards the goal of playing the T20 World Cup for India and it was such a proud feeling to do so… we did fall short of the ultimate motive, but it did fill my life with many memories to cherish. Thank you to all my fellow players, coaches, friends, and most importantly the fans for the undying support,” wrote Dinesh Karthik. He ended his post with the hashtag – ‘dreams do come true’.

A video shared by Karthik also features a montage of moments from the tournament. In the clip, Karthik can be seen hanging out with his family and his kids. The video also featured him enjoying some light moments with Hardik Pandya, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Ravichandran Ashwin.

Many users were left guessing if the wicketkeeper-batter has unofficially announced his retirement. “Don’t announce your retirement, we aren’t ready,” wrote one fan. Another remarked, “Pls DK we beg you not to retire from any format, come back again even stronger”.

Dinesh Karthik was chosen for the T20 World Cup squad due to his role as a finisher for Royal Challengers Bangalore in last season’s Indian Premier League (IPL). For team India, Karthik had to compete with Rishabh Pant for the wicketkeeper’s role. In the World Cup, Karthik failed to score big. In the four games he played, he managed to score only 14 runs.

When Hardik Pandya was recovering from a back injury, Venkatesh Iyer was tipped as the all-rounder to fill in Pandya’s shoes. After a stellar run with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the second half of IPL 2021, Iyer stormed his way into the Indian cricket team and played nine T20Is and two ODIs before he was dropped. Pandya’s emphatic return from injury sniffed out Iyer’s chances of a comeback and he was back to the domestic grind for his state, Madhya Pradesh.

The 27-year-old started the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with a bang – 62* and 6/20 vs Rajasthan – and followed it up with scores of 57, 42 and 28 in the next three games. Iyer was building momentum, but a freak injury came in the way of his good run. He had tripped and twisted his ankle and underwent surgery for the same.

The domestic season is all but over for Iyer, but he hopes to return to action early next year and wants to make a return to the Indian dressing room.

In an exclusive chat, where he is undergoing rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Iyer talks about his debut, juggling roles of an opener and finisher, working with Chandrakant Pandit and the disappointment of missing the bus for the recently concluded T20 World Cup.

Excerpts:

What happened to the ankle?

I just tripped off the staircase, and kind of twisted it (ankle). The entire socket came out… (Ankle) was in a bad position but the surgery went well and it should be good. The rehab is going well and step by step I have started to walk again. It should hopefully be fine in a few months.

You were fast-tracked into the Indian cricket team after one brilliant half of IPL, things moved quite quickly…

Whenever you get the chance to represent your country, I mean there’s nothing more special than that. I am really fortunate to have had that opportunity to do so. I also look at it as something that has given me a path to make it. It is now up to me again to get back on that path and get back into the Indian team. Really fortunate to have had the opportunity to make my debut for India.

How was it adjusting to different roles? Batting at top of the order for KKR and then finishing the innings for India?

I think the transition to the top-order was rather difficult. I have batted in the middle order almost throughout my life. I have batted a long time in the middle-order for the MP team. Middle-order is a place where I felt at home but the opening was actually tougher. But thanks to the domestic setup I got to experience what it was like to open and play on different surfaces. And once you are mentally prepared and mentally accept that you are going to open or play the role of a finisher, then the body just reacts to it.

But it’s a completely different ball game. Both are extremely different roles and require different skill sets…

Yes, it’s extremely different. The skillset for an opener and a finisher. But once you are clear in the head about where and how you need to bat, it becomes that much easier. And on top of that, when you have the backing of the coach and captain. And also when the role is communicated to you with utmost clarity, then it’s just you going out there and putting your best foot forward without worrying about the external noise. The way I was backed, the way things were communicated to me… I felt at home and felt that this was not new territory for me.

What was the communication like when you entered the team? Were you told about the finisher’s role?

When I got into the team, I looked at the team and saw three openers already there. Rohit bhai, KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan were already there. So I knew I am not going to open. And then when I met Rahul sir and he asked me how I used to approach the innings when I used to open and it was communicated to me that I will play the role of a finisher. Whenever someone gives you a new role, they also give you a cushion. That was done. Rohit bhai and Rahul sir told me that I would be given a string of games to try and execute that role. And once you have the captain and coach’s backing, the job becomes all the easier.

In the nine T20Is you played, you bowled in only four games. That too not the entire quota. Did you feel under-bowled during your India stint?

To be honest, I did feel a bit under-bowled. But when I think of it from the captain’s perspective, and I have led my state sides in the past, you know when the five bowlers are doing the job then it is not really necessary to use the sixth bowling option. It’s a great cushion to have but when the five bowlers are doing the job then the captain need not look at the sixth bowling option. And that’s what Rohit bhai did. From an individual point of view, I would love to bat 20 overs and bowl my four overs but that really is not possible.

Disappointed with the abrupt end to your stint with Team India?

Who doesn’t want to have a long run with the Indian team? Even though I wanted that, I clearly understood the way Hardik bhai came back. What he did was really amazing. Every team wants to pick the best team for the World Cup. I would have wanted to be there, but again it’s not in my hands. I have always looked at cricket as an opportunity. If am not playing with the Indian cricket team, it’s my opportunity to play in the IPL or represent my state side in domestic competitions. My job is to only do my process right and not worry about selection. I might have been in the team for the T20s and ODIs going on, but I, unfortunately, sustained an injury. I will ensure that when I get to play, I will give my best and not worry about anything else.

Was the management in touch with you during your time away from the team? What was the equation like?

I was in touch with a lot of players. I knew what I had to do to get back into the team. May it be batting, bowling or fielding – everything. (Being) better never stops. I was told to be ready. And as I told you, our set-up is so good that if not India, then IPL, if not IPL, then domestic competitions, if not them – then the local leagues. That is never going to end. And I feel very lucky to operate that way.

Is Venkatesh Iyer mentally and technically ready to continue juggling the role of finisher and opener for his country and IPL team?

Definitely! As a professional cricketer, you always have to be flexible and I always look at pressure and such situations as privileges. So many people in the country and I’m getting to do a particular thing. That is something which is a privilege for me. As a player, you just want to go out there and contribute for your side. That’s all. Be it finishing, be it opening the innings. Be it bowling, fielding or anything. I try and accept it in my mind first. If you accept it in the mind, then the body just follows. The problem happens when you are not accepting it in the first place. I have always accepted the fact that I can be floated up and down the order at any time. In this Mushtaq Ali Trophy, I played three games and batted at three different positions – No.3 in one, No.4 in one and No.5 in one.

Was it a conscious call to try various things during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy? Like bat at different positions or did it kind of happen because of the game situation and demands?

A bit of both to be honest. Before the tournament only, Chandu (Chandrakant Pandit) sir spoke to me about showing to the world how versatile I can be while batting in different positions. Had I not injured my leg, I was going to open in the next game. That was really great and I felt good. Was scoring in all games. That shows that I can bat in different positions. And see performances don’t really matter as even If I hadn’t scored in those games, but if I had made the effort to walk in and perform a particular role, that itself is a victory for me.

How excited are you to reunite with Chandrakant Pandit at KKR now?

It’s just going to be a continuation of what’s going on right now. Chandu sir is our domestic coach, he has worked on all aspects of our game. Right from aspects of fielding to batting technique. I am extremely happy that someone of his stature, who has dominated domestic cricket for such a long time is finally getting to showcase his skills on the IPL level. I am really excited from that point of view and just like everyone else, I am excited about how he will take charge of KKR. To be honest, I really can’t wait for the IPL.

Any time frame you are looking at for a return to action?

I am not really looking at a time frame because it’s the left leg and it’s going to bear 10-15 times my body weight when I bowl. I am extremely fortunate to get the treatment and facilities here at the NCA. They haven’t fixed a timeline because doing that would add pressure on me. I am really hopeful about getting back on the field sometime in January. But I feel February could be the right time to start.

Mission 2024 has well and truly begun for the Indian cricket team. Have you made it your goal/target to return to cricket?

Absolutely not. Right now, my only focus is to go to the gym and do whatever exercises I am told. I don’t look at things too far ahead. When I was called into the Indian cricket team, I felt I could play in the World Cup and then I was not there. That really hurt me. I don’t want to put myself in a position to think about something which is really far away from me. If things are to happen, they will happen. The only thing in my hands is to stick to the process, get better every day and leave the rest to god.

Team India, who are seeking some game time, are likely to face a tough challenge from New Zealand when both sides lock horns in the second T20I of the three-match series on Sunday at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.

Notably, the series opener in Wellington was washed out due to continuous rain and the Indian players must be itching to get onto the park which, inarguably, has the most scenic backdrop. However, the bad news for the fans and the players is that the forecast for the second match doesn’t look promising either.

The latest weather report suggests dark clouds over Bay Oval during the game time. There is a 90% chance of rain during the match, while the temperature on Sunday will hover in the range of 15-18 degrees Celsius with 80-85% humidity.

But, there is still a slight chance of India vs New Zealand second T20I going ahead as the probability of precipitation is expected decrease in the evening.

The match will begin at 7:30 PM local time (12 PM IST).

Interestingly, the team batting first has won all T20I matches at the Bay Oval but with rain likely to reduce the overs, the toss-winning captain will most likely opt to bowl first.

Squads:

India: Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya(c), Rishabh Pant(w), Deepak Hooda, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Umran Malik, Washington Sundar, Mohammed Siraj, Shreyas Iyer, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshal Patel

New Zealand: Finn Allen, Devon Conway(w), Kane Williamson(c), Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell, James Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, Adam Milne, Lockie Ferguson, Blair Tickner, Michael Bracewell, Ish Sodhi.

The BCCI on Friday sacked the entire four-member senior national selection committee led by Chetan Sharma after the Indian cricket team failed to reach the final of the T20 World Cup in Australia.

On Friday, the BCCI invited applications for the position of national selectors (Senior Men). The last date of application is November 28.

That Chetan will be sacked was first reported by PTI on October 18 after the BCCI AGM but it is learnt that his committee has not even been told about the sacking.

The new chairman’s job mandate has an interesting description of “selecting captain in each format” which suggests that BCCI might be moving towards split captaincy in near future.

Chetan (North zone), Harvinder Singh (Centra Zone), Sunil Joshi (South Zone) and Debasish Mohanty (East Zone) have had the shortest stint as senior national selectors in recent times.

Joshi and Harvinder were appointed national selectors in February 2020. After the AGM in January 2021, Chetan took over as chairman of selectors with Mohanty and Kuruvilla joining him.

A senior national selector normally gets a four-year term subject to extension. There was no selector from West Zone after Abbey Kuruvilla’s tenure ended.

Once, India lost in the semifinal of the T20 World Cup, the writing was always on the wall that Chetan was on borrowed time.

During Chetan’s tenure, India had also failed to reach knock-out stage in the 2021 edition of T20 World Cup and lost the World Test Championships final.

“For Chetan to save his job, India needed to win the T20 World Cup. Nothing less could have saved him. But once, he was asked to select four squads at one go (New Zealand and Bangladesh away series) which was unprecedented, one could read between the lines,” a BCCI insider, who has been tracking the developments, told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

There are multiple reasons that the BCCI mandarins were unhappy with Chetan and his committee’s shoddy performance.

It is believed that Chetan was never assertive when it came to certain decisions.

Some of the reasons believed to have led to his sacking are: not being able to have a settled squad, allowing eight international captains in just one year with some select seniors turning workload management into a joke, picking KL Rahul after a eight month hiatus from T20 cricket, going on almost each and every India tour but not being able to create a decisive set of players in co-ordination with team management.

No tangible plan as to whether a 37-year-old senior like Shikhar Dhawan would be carried to 2023 World Cup when he would be above 38 is among the issues that has never been addressed.

Chetan and his team could never reward the domestic or IPL performers and pick specialists across two T20 World Cups. Theirs is a committee under whom India have lost two T20 World Cup games by 10 wickets, something that has never happened earlier.

That Chetan’s days were numbered was understood when he cut a lonely figure during the T20 World Cup in Australia. He never travelled with the team and would stand at a fair distance from head coach Rahul Dravid at the end of bowlers’ run-up at the nets.

The media in Australia never witnessed any major conversation between the duo.

Team India will look to put the disappointment of their ignominious exit from the T20 World Cup behind when they take on New Zealand in the first of the three T20Is on Friday.

The Men in Blue endured yet another heartbreak in an ICC event as they bowed out of the T20 World Cup with a whimper, getting outplayed by eventual winners England by 10 wickets in Adelaide in the second semi-final. The defeat extended their wait for an ICC trophy, with the Indian team not having won a major global event since the 2013 Champions Trophy.

Like India, New Zealand too were eliminated in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup after topping their group, failing to defend what would prove to be a sub-par total against Pakistan. Unlike the Indians however, the Black Caps did manage to collect a few wickets during Babar Azam and Co’s successful run chase.

The two teams lock horns in three T20Is, which will then be followed by as many ODIs. Each game in the tour will take place in a different venue, with Wellington’s Sky Stadium playing host to the opening game of India’s tour.

While the Black Caps continue to be led by their usual captain Kane Williamson, the all-rounder Hardik Pandya has filled in for India skipper Rohit Sharma, who has been rested from the tour along with Virat Kohli and KL Rahul. Though they’ve stuck with Williamson as their skipper, the Kiwis have dropped senior pacer Trent Boult and opener Martin Guptill for the series.

Ahead of the first T20I, we take a look at five players who could strike big in the series:

Umran Malik

With the Indian attack taking a severe beating in the semi-final against England, supporters of the Men in Blue will want some changes to be made to the team’s bowling combination, to put it politely. And while young Arshdeep Singh remained impressive, folks will be wanting an alternative to Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami in the pace department.

Express pacer Umran Malik is seen as one such candidate capable of dismantling opposition batting lineups at will if he gets his discipline right along with his breakneck speed. Malik, who hit 157kmph while representing the Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2022, had made his debut in the tour of England earlier this year but was a tad expensive. The Jammu and Kashmir pacer will hope to make up for it this time around and present a solid case for his long-term selection in New Zealand where the conditions will be to his liking.

Lockie Ferguson

Malik briefly held the record for the fastest ball delivered in the 2022 edition of the IPL for a brief while, only for Gujarat Titans’ pacer Lockie Ferguson to break the record a little over three weeks later in the final, clocking 157.3 kmph against Malik’s 157.

And in the upcoming series between India and New Zealand, it won’t just be Malik who will be setting the speed gun on fire; Ferguson is just as capable of hitting dizzying speeds with the ball. What’s more Ferguson’s the more experienced of the two as well as a local, someone who understands the conditions inside out. Expect a battle for the ages between these two.

Yuzvendra Chahal

And it’s not just the pace department one has to keep an eye out for in the upcoming series. Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal will be hoping to send a strong message to those who kept him out of India’s playing XI in the T20 World Cup despite wrist-spinners proving to be match-winners for teams such as England and Pakistan, the two sides that made it to the final.

Chahal, whose only appearances in Australia took place during the practice games, doesn’t have the best of records when it comes to T20Is in New Zealand, but will he be hoping to change for the better should opportunities come his way in the upcoming series.

Shubman Gill

It wasn’t just the bowling unit where India had issues in the T20 World Cup; their batting department has had its fair share of problems, especially at the top of the order with skipper Rohit Sharma and his deputy KL Rahul struggling to find their touch and ultimately putting pressure on Virat Kohli and the rest of the middle order.

Punjab and Gujarat Titans opener Shubman Gill comes into this series on the back of a stellar run in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he collected 260 runs at an average of 52 and a strike rate of 156.62 including a 55-ball 126 against powerhouses Karnataka in the quarters. And he sure will hope to present himself as a successor to Rahul should the senior team management decide they’ve enough of him in the shortest format.

Glenn Phillips

Phillips was among the standout players in the World Cup, where he smashed one of the two centuries scored across the tournament — a 64-ball 104 against Sri Lanka that came at a time when the Black Caps were reeling at 15/3, helping them post a match-winning total of 167/7.

The South Africa-born keeper-batter finished the highest run-scorer for his side in the tournament with 201 runs at an average of 40.20 and a strike rate of 158.26 and the 10th-highest overall (fifth, if you take into account the teams that started their campaigns from the Super 12s). And though his form tapered off towards the end when it mattered the most, with Phillips getting dismissed for 6 in the semi-final off Mohammad Nawaz’s bowling, he remains the biggest threat among the Kiwi batters for Hardik Pandya and Co in the upcoming fixtures.
