Indian domestic cricket is getting back to normalcy after being affected by the COVID-19 pandemic for almost two years. Not just cricket but all the sporting events’ schedules went haywire. They are slowly getting back on track.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has planned to have two Irani Cup games this season with Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA), the 2020 champions set to host the Rest of India (ROI) in the first one. The encounter is slated to begin on 1 October 2022 in Rajkot.

ROI bowler Arzan Nagwaswalla in an exclusive chat with Firstpost talked about his preparations, the experience in the Indian dressing room and the importance of having a left-arm pacer in the side.

Nagwaswalla had been in some good form in the last domestic season and the 24-year-old Gujarat cricketer talked about the importance of staying in the groove and be ready for the opportunities that come.

“Look, it’s all about staying in the rhythm and groove so that whenever the opportunity comes in, you are able to perform to your potential,” he said.

The left-handed bowler hasn’t really played much competitive cricket after March 2022. When quizzed about the same, Arzan said that the break has been a good one for him as he has got some rest but added that he had been following his fitness regimes quite religiously.

“Actually, it was a good break for me as I had played a lot of cricket in the last one year, had back-to-back tours so, it helped me get some rest. But I was training properly and was keeping myself fit and in shape. I was having good training sessions in gym and running. This will get more intense in coming days and as the season approaches.

“Moreover, I have been very focused about my training schedule and routine as it’s going to be a long domestic season and I just want to play without any niggles or injuries,” he added.

The left-arm pacer also talked about the team environment and the strategy. “The atmosphere is very positive within the team and the players share a good bond among themselves.”

“We all just want to back our skill set, put up a good show and have a mindset of making the team win,” he said.

Nagwaswalla got India call-up last year as a standby for UK tour — for the World Test Championship final and the Test series against England. When asked about his experience, the left-arm pacer said that the senior players were very welcoming and shared a lot of insights about the game with him every now and then.

“It was a very different and a very good experience for me. The senior cricketers are very welcoming. They understand the mindset of a player who has just come in the side,” he said.

“In fact, I have had some very good conversations with the senior bowlers. They have always been there to help me and give guidance whether it is bowling or training.”

Being a left-arm pacer himself, the Gujarat bowler explained the importance of having a left-handed fast bowler in any line-up and the varieties he brings in the bowling combinations.

“A team should have at least one left-arm pacer because it gives you a variety in the bowling combination because he has a different angle, line, length, and swing. There are a lot of good batters who face some difficulties against the left-arm pacers so, I feel that’s an important cog in the wheel,” he insisted.

Nagwaswalla, who has already picked up more than 80 FC wickets in a brief career, emphasised on following the “process”.

“Look, it’s all about the process. It all depends upon how we are training and how much effort we are putting in. Following a certain process, putting in the effort is important. If that gives you result, it’s good but even if it doesn’t, then also, we shouldn’t give up on the process,” he concluded.

The seven-match T20I series between Pakistan and England is all set for a Sunday decider as the latter bounced back from consecutive defeats in style with a commanding victory in Lahore on Friday.

Facing a must-win scenario in the sixth match of the series, the Moeen Ali-led outfit produced a clinical display with the bat. Opening batter Phil Salt led from the front with a whirlwind 88 not out as the visitors chased the 170-run target set by Pakistan down with eight wickets and more than five overs to spare.

This was after another stellar display from Pakistan skipper Babar Azam, whose 59-ball 87 not out lent some respectability to the Pakistani innings, helping them set a competitive total after being reduced to 15/2 in the powerplay.

Pakistan had earlier clinched back-to-back thrillers — winning the fourth and fifth T20Is by 3 and 6 runs respectively. England’s powerful riposte, however, ensures the two teams lock horns in the winner-takes-all clash at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium this Sunday.

Read: Twitter reacts to England’s dominant series-leveling win over Pakistan

Along the way, several milestones were achieved and records were broken, which we take a look at in greater detail in our statistical roundup:

— Babar became the joint-fastest to complete 3,000 T20I runs alongside Virat Kohli, both taking 81 innings to reach the milestone.

— With this knock, Babar went past Martin Guptill and David Warner to become the batter with the second-highest number of half-centuries as an opener (23).

— England chasing the 170-run target down in just 14.3 overs is the second-fastest run chase for a target greater than or equal to 170.

— Phil Salt’s 19-ball half-century is the third-quickest fifty by an English batter in the format.

— England’s score of 82/1 at the end of the sixth over is their third-highest total at the end of the powerplay in T20Is, and the second-highest in men’s cricket.

After a couple of nerve-wracking thrillers, the Pakistan-England Twenty20 International series went back to the one-sided results as the visitors strolled to an eight-wicket win in Lahore on Friday.

The English top-order proved unstoppable on the day with opener Phil Salt smashing an unbeaten 88 off just 41 deliveries as the Moeen Ali-led side won with more than five overs to spare, levelling the seven-match series 3-3. Salt’s effort eclipsed Pakistan captain Babar Azam’s unbeaten 87, which helped the home team recover from a shaky start and post a competitive 169/6 on the board.

Besides Salt, Alex Hales (27), Dawid Malan (26) and Ben Duckett (26 not out) chipped in with valuable contributions as the visitors were in complete control throughout the chase, not giving the Pakistanis any room to mount a comeback.

The two teams head to Sunday’s decider, which will be the third game to be hosted at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium as well as the final match of England’s tour — their first trip to Pakistan in 17 years.

The match did garner plenty of interesting reactions on social media, including praise for both Salt and Babar. We take a look at some of the most interesting ones here:

Amidst all the drama surrounding Jasprit Bumrah’s participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has categorically stated that the Indian pace spearhead isn’t ruled out of the showpiece event yet.

Unverified reports of a dodgy back ruling Bumrah out of the T20 World Cup that begins later in October in Australia sent alarm bells ringing in the Indian cricket community. The BCCI, however, has chosen to  remain tight-lipped on the matter and not go beyond ruling him out of the remainder of the South Africa T20I series.

“Bumrah is not out of the World Cup yet. So let’s see what happens,” Ganguly was quoted as saying in a video tweeted by RevSportz.

“Fingers crossed, yes. I don’t know, we’ll find out in the next two or three days. Don’t rule him out yet,” added the former India captain when quizzed about the possibility of Bumrah boarding the flight to Australia.

Read: Bumrah opens up on struggles with setbacks as World Cup berth slips away

Bumrah had only recently returned from a long injury layoff during the T20I series against Australia, having missed the Asia Cup after the tour of England and getting rested for the tours of West Indies and Zimbabwe.

He featured in the second and third T20Is against Australia, and proved quite expensive on his comeback with his average and economy reading 73 and 12.16 for the solitary wicket of Aussie skipper Aaron Finch.

Bumrah was rested for the first T20I against South Africa in Thiruvananthapuram and the back stress fracture subsequently ruled him out of the remainder of the series, to be played in Guwahati and Indore on 2 and 4 October respectively.

The BCCI then named red-ball specialist Mohammed Siraj as his replacement in the squad.

India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja tweeted a picture of commentator Sanjay Manjrekar on Thursday late evening taking social media to a frenzy.

Jadeja posted a picture that apparently seemed to be clicked from a TV screen. He captioned the picture, “Watching my dear friend on screen @sanjaymanjrekar”

The southpaw has had a controversial history with the commentator since the 2019 World Cup when Manjrekar had termed Jadeja as a ‘bits and pieces cricket’.

Jadeja did not take the comment lightly and hit back at Manjrekar with a tweet, “Still I have played twice the number of matches you have played and I am still playing. Learn to respect people who have achieved. I have heard enough of your verbal diarrhea.”

Subsequently, after Jadeja’s excellent performance against New Zealand in the semi-final, which India lost by a close margin, Manjrekar had said “By bits and pieces of sheer brilliance, he’s ripped me apart on all fronts,” trying to compensate for his earlier comment.

To add to the drama, after the recent Asia Cup 2022 match between India and Pakistan, Manjrekar asked Jadeja, on air, if he was okay to talk to him for broadcasters Star Sports.

Jadeja had replied, “Absolutely, I don’t have any problem.”

Jadeja who is currently out of action owing to a knee injury, shared this post, the context of which is not yet completely known.

However, the Twitterati went berserk with the tweet.

One of the users commented, “What did I just see?”

Another user commented, “Ye kyun tweet kiya isne? (Why did he tweet this?)

One of the users commented, “Multiverse is real,” taking a dig at the comment.

Arshdeep Singh’s three-wicket haul followed by Suryakumar Yadav’s 50* and KL Rahul’s unbeaten knock of 51 helped India defeat South Africa by eight wickets in the first match of the three-match T20I series here at Greenfield International Stadium on Wednesday.

For India Suryakumar played a knock of unbeaten 50 while KL Rahul smashed 51 not out. For South Africa, Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje bagged one wicket each.

Chasing a target of 107, India got off to a bad start as they lost their opening batter Rohit Sharma on two ball duck in Kagiso Rabada’s over.

Skipper wicket invited right-handed batter Virat Kohli to the crease. However, the stylish batter could not do much and went back to the pavilion after scoring just three runs in the over of Anrich Nortje.

New batter Suryakumar Yadav hammered Nortje for back-to-back two sixes in the 7th over innings. After 10 over India’s score read 47/2. Suryakumar along with KL Rahul played a sensible knock while gathering boundaries at regular intervals.

India needed six runs in 24 balls, and Suryakumar brought up his half-century in 33 deliveries. With a help of a six on the fourth delivery of the 17th over KL Rahul also brought up his fifty and took his side home with an eight wickets victory over Proteas.

Here’s how Twitterati reacted to India’s victory:

India went 1-0 up in the series after beating South Africa by 8 wickets in the first T20I in Thiruvananthapuram. Chasing a small target of 107, the home side lost Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli early in the chase but KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav steadied the ship for the team and eventually took them home.

While KL struggled a bit in the early stage of the innings, SKY was on song right from the word go as the two batters notched up individual fifties.

KL who chipped in with an unbeaten stand of 93 runs for the second wicket with SKY lauded the latter for his knock. Surykumar Yadav struck 50* off 33.

“Definitely, right up there (as the toughest pitch). We have played in some difficult conditions like this but I haven’t got runs, so this was hard work. It was unbelievable for Surya to come out there and play those shots, we have seen how balls were flying, nipping around, two-paced and everything that can be hard for a batter that was the wicket today, and for Surya to come with that approach after the first ball that hit him, he just woke up and wanted to play his shots, be aggressive and take on the bowling. That helped me take my time and play one end. (Expect that much help) Not that much. We did practice here yesterday and that was a humbling experience as well, we all came in prepared mentally as it was not going to be an easy wicket and I was ready to do the dirty work, ready to be challenged and get the job done for the team,” KL said after the match.

Earlier, the Indian seamers and especially Deepak Chahar and Arshdeep Singh rattled the South African batting line up as the side was reduced to 9/5 in the less than three overs and was eventually restricted to 106/8 in 20 overs. Rahul lavished praise on Arshdeep for his contribution.

“He’s (Arshdeep) growing with each game and with each outing he gets better, he is somebody who has a big heart and I have seen him in close quarters while playing in the IPL. This season what he did for his franchise was phenomenal and to be the number one death bowler in a team which has Rabada speaks highly of him. We always want a left-arm seamer and it is great to have someone like Arshdeep,” he added.

The two sides will now lock horns with each other in the second clash in Guwahati on Sunday.

India batter Suryakumar Yadav hit a brilliant six off Anrich Nortje against the run of play in the seventh over of the innings on Wednesday to cheer the crowds after a nervy start.

India lost Rohit Sharma (0) in the third over and Virat Kohli (3) in the seventh over and were under some pressure chasing the target of 107 in the first T20I against South Africa.

Suryakumar Yadav, however, straight away was in action with back-to-back sixes of Anrich Nortje who was bowling around 143 kmph.

On the second delivery Suryakumar faced, he top edged the delivery trying to flick on the leg side. The ball flew over third man for a six with sheer pace of the bowler.

Suryakumar was able to have a better control on the next delivery and flicked a full length delivery over the backward square leg for a mammoth six. The ball hit right on the middle of the bat and was submerged into the crowd.

Watch the video here:

Suryakumar continued his scintillating form and also hit a half-century as India chased down the 107-target in 17th over.

Suryakumar scored 50 off 33 balls with three 6s and five 4s. KL Rahul who struggled initially, but didn’t lose his wicket, ended with 51 off 56 deliveries hitting four maximums and two boundaries.

India won the first T20I by eight wickets. The two teams will lock horns again on 2 October, Sunday.

Hove: Young Indian batter Shubman Gill slammed his maiden hundred for Glamorgan against Sussex in their County Championship Division 2 match in Hove on Tuesday.

Batting on 91 overnight, Gill notched his eighth First-Class century in 123 balls, displaying his wide array of elegant shots all around the County Ground in Hove.

Gill smashed 16 boundaries and two sixes in his knock of 119 off 139 balls before being dismissed by off-spinner Jack Carson when he holed out to Sean Hunt.

Gill batted for three hours and 23 minutes as he got out with Glamorgan’s first innings score reading 277/5 in the opening session of day two.

Gill first put on a 57-run stand with Glamorgan skipper David Lloyd (56). Under floodlights on day one, Gill and Billy Root had little trouble in adding 87 runs before the latter got out in the eighth over of the day.

The 23-year-old Indian top-order batter has been in the form of his life having scored a maiden International century — 130 — in an ODI against Zimbabwe last month.

England will get the chance to regain lead in the seven-match T20I series against Pakistan when the two teams fight it out in the fifth match on Wednesday, at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

The series, tied 2-2, has been an evenly-contested one with no clear favourite. While England won the first and third T20Is, Pakistan emerged victorious in the second and fourth matches. All the matches played thus far have been held at the National Stadium in Karachi, but now the action shifts to Lahore.

England suffered a heart-breaking defeat in the fourth T20I on Sunday, losing to the hosts by three runs.

England failed to chase down a target of 167 set by Pakistan, with Haris Rauf picking up three wickets in the death overs to dismantle the visitors.

England’s downfall began in the 19th over, when Rauf saw off Liam Dawson (34). The visitors’ score at the time read 162/8 from 18.3 overs, needing five more runs from nine balls remaining.

England were further restricted to 163/9 at the end of the 19th over, needing four runs from six balls. However, England’s hopes ended in the second ball of the 20th over, when Reece Topley was run-out by Shan Masood.

Rauf was adjudged Man of the Match for his heroics with the ball.

India brought smiles back on the faces of their fans with a T20I series win over Australia, burying the disappointment of an underwhelming Asia Cup campaign in the process.

India suffered a four-wicket loss in a high-scoring encounter at Mohali last Tuesday but bounced back with a strong display in a rain-curtailed match in Nagpur on Friday. And in the series decider in Hyderabad on Sunday, both Suryakumar Yadav and Virat Kohli struck match-winning fifties after yet another vital spell from Axar Patel as the Men in Blue ended the series on a high with a six-wicket victory.

And now Rohit Sharma and Co turn their focus to their next assignment — a three-match T20I series against South Africa starting Wednesday, their last matches in the format before the T20 World Cup gets underway in Australia next month.

Both teams had locked horns in a five-match series in the same format earlier this year, with Rishabh Pant filling in as skipper after Rohit Sharma was rested and KL Rahul was injured. The series, which took place right after the IPL, ended in a 2-2 stalemate with the fifth and final game in Bengaluru witnessing just 3.3 overs of action before the rain gods decided to interfere.

South Africa were 2-0 up in that series before the Men in Blue fought back admirably to go level with the Proteas. Temba Bavuma’s men, however, will look to go one step further and claim their second T20I series win on Indian soil this time around.

Ahead of the series opener, we take a look at the live streaming, telecast and other match-related details:

When will the first India vs South Africa T20I be played?

The opening match of the India vs South Africa T20I series will be played on Wednesday, 28 September.

Deepti Sharma’s controversial run-out incident during recently India women vs England women T20 series led to a huge uproar from the English media and fans on social media. Amid the furore, the incident was also compared with Ben Stokes’s equally contentious ball deflection off his bat during the 2019 World Cup final.

This didn’t really sit well with the current England Test captain, who took to Twitter to wonder why were the two incidents being considered.

“Why are people comparing a ball deflecting of my bat to a Mankad?” Stokes wrote on Twitter while sharing a gif image signifying confusion.

While England-based MCC has backed Deepti over the controversy, this hasn’t really changed the perception of a large section of English fans and has drawn the dismay of some of their players as well. Ben Stokes, however, never criticised the incident but preferred calling it ‘Mankading’ despite the ICC rulebook reading it as a run-out at the non-strikers’ end.

Earlier, Deepti, upon reaching India clarified that she gave enough warnings to England batter Charlotte Dean before running her out in the 44th over, which also sealed India’s win at a crucial juncture.

“It was a plan, because we had warned her (for leaving the crease early) repeatedly. We did things as per the rules and guidelines. We told the umpires as well, but she was there (outside the crease). We couldn’t do much,” Deepti told reporters at Kolkata airport.

Indian cricket team received a rousing welcome upon landing at Thiruvananthapuram for India vs South Africa T20 series on Saturday with local boy Sanju Samson’s name being chanted at the Trivandrum International Airport. Indian spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal took to Instagram to share the moment.

Samson, however, wasn’t present at the spot to witness the moment as the wicket-keeper batter isn’t part of the India squad for the series, starting on Tuesday.

Suryakumar Yadav got the crowd further going by flaunting a photo of Samson towards the crowd. The moment was captured on camera and the video of the same has went viral on the social media.

The 27-year-old wicketkeeper was snubbed for the T20 World Cup too as selectors opted for Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant for the series. Samson, however, is expected to be part of the ODI series later on, as per PTI. The agency reported that Samson will be included in the Zimbabwe series as well.

“Sanju in any case will be playing the ODIs against South Africa as selectors will maintain the continuity from the Zimbabwe tour,” said a BCCI source to the agency.

T20 World Cup Full squad

Rohit Sharma (Captain), KL Rahul (vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), Dinesh Karthik (wicket-keeper), Hardik Pandya, R. Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh.

India batter Virat Kohli notched up another half-century during the third T20I of the three-match series against Australia in Hyderabad. Chasing a target of 187, the hosts lost openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul early but Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav got the side back on track with a partnership of 104 runs for the third wicket. SKY scored 69 off 36 while Kohli struck a 48-ball 63.

Talking about his batting, the former India skipper said that he had planned to steady the ship for the side especially after the hosts lost a couple wickets early in the chase.

“That’s why I’m batting at 3, I have to utilise my experience and give the team what the team wants. I got off to a good start then I had to take down Zampa because he’s an important bowler through the middle. When Surya started hitting it like that, I kinda looked at the dug-out as well. Rohit and Rahul bhai both told me, ‘you can just keep batting on’ because Surya was striking it that well. It was just about building a partnership,” he said.

Kohli lauded Suryakumar for his valiant effort and added that the right-handed batter has the ability to bat at any situation.

“Absolute clarity in what he wants to do. He has the game to bat under any sort of situation and any condition. He has shown that already. He got a hundred in England, he batted beautifully in the Asia Cup. Here, he’s striking the ball as well as I have seen him strike. For the past 6 months, he’s been outstanding. It’s the array of shots and to play those shots at the right time is such a tremendous skill. He’s a guy who knows his game inside out. He’s got the gift of timing and I was in awe watching him play his shots,” Kohli added.

During India’s entertaining win against Australia in Nagpur, Virat Kohli and Axar Patel teamed up perfectly to affect the run-out of in-form Cameron Green during the second T20I in Nagpur on Friday.

The incident happened during the second over of the match with Green, who scored a fifty in the previous game, was caught short of his ground while chasing the non-striker end. His shot towards mid-on to an alert Kohli saw a quick return towards the stumps ahead of Patel. The real-time view suggested that Kohli might have impacted a direct hit only for replays to reveal later that it was Patel who dislodged the stumps upon collecting the ball.

Australia eventually went on to post 90/5 in a rain truncated match that allowed just eight overs a side. The hosts chased down the target with four balls to spare to post a six-wicket win.

The team’s captain Rohit Sharma starred in the win with a 46* while Dinesh Karthik (10 runs off 2 balls) took India over the line with a six and a four in the last over. For Australia, Mathew Wade scored a 20-ball 43 after Aaron Finch’s 15-ball 31 at the top.

Axar Patel was picking among Indian bowlers with 2/13 (2 overs) while Adam Zampa (3/16 in 2 overs) starred among Australians.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam and his opening partner Mohammad Rizwan lit up Karachi’s National Stadium as Pakistan chased down 200 runs to defeat England by 10 wickets in the second T20I to level the series.

Batting first, England scored 199/5 in 20 overs as captain Moeen Ali’s 55 not out down the order helped the visitors pose a strong total after Ben Duckett (43) and, opening duo Phil Salt (30) and Alex Hales (26) made healthy contributions up the top.

Later, Babar and Rizwan took charge of the chase from the start as they added 59 runs in the powerplay and eventually took Pakistan over the line with three balls to spare. The Pakistan skipper notched up his second T20I hundred during the chase while Rizwan returned not out at 88 off 51.

We take a look at all the records broken during the game in our stat attack:

    • Babar Azam’s 110 not out was the highest scored by a men’s cricketer in T20Is as the record was earlier held by his partner Rizwan, who scored 104 not out against South Africa last year.
    • This was also the second time an international century was scored in the shortest format of the game. Incidentally, a foreign player is yet to score a century in the country.
    • This was the second highest run scored by a captain while chasing in men’s T20I. The record is held by Azam, who scored 122 while chasing against South Africa last year.
    • Azam and Rizwan also hold the record of most 150-plus stand in men’s T20Is ahead of Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma (2).
    • This was the third-highest chase by Pakistan in T20Is. The record stands at 208 runs, achieved against West Indies, followed by 204 against South Africa.
    • Pakistan are now the first team to chase down 200 or more without losing a wicket. Overall in T20 cricket, the previous highest target chased down in a 10-wicket win was of184 by Kolkata Knight Riders against Gujarat Lions in 2017.
    • This is the first time in a men’s international match that all wickets to fall on the day were bowled dismissals. The record doesn’t include abandoned matches.
    • Rizwan and Babar have now scored 1929 runs in T20Is while sharing a partnership in 36 at an average of 56.73. They are ahead of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan, who have scored 1743 runs in 52 innings together.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam and his opening partner and wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan scripted a record-breaking win for the side as the hosts chased down a target of 200 runs by 10 wickets against England in Karachi.

Opting to bat, England rode on a late surge from Moeen Ali, who struck an unbeaten 55 off 23 and posted 199/5 in 20 overs. Later, Babar and Rizwan took the charge and helped Pakistan go over the line. The Pakistan skipper notched up his second T20I hundred during the chase while Rizwan returned not out at 88 off 51.

Babar later talked about the discussions he had with Rizwan in the middle.

“The discussion was we can chase it down, we have done it before and that was the belief in the dressing room. The wicket always plays better under lights and it played better than what we expected.

“The discussions with Rizwan were to finish the match. I always had the belief (during the run of low scores) and you need that as a sportsman. The team always supported me and kept backing me,” the right-handed batter said during the post-match presentation.

England captain Moeen Ali admitted that it was his over that change the course of the match where he was hit for 21 runs.

“It was a very good score. It was a good wicket in the end. We were bowling okay, but the momentum changed when I bowled my over and gave 21 runs. We played really well with the bat. Duckett’s innings gave us a good platform,” he said.

The series is now levelled at 1-1 with the third match scheduled to take place on Friday in Karachi.
