New Zealand are on cloud nine. They completely decimated Scotland in the second T20I of the two-match series on Friday. The visitors also broke several records at Edinburgh in the process of getting a clean sweep in the series.

The Mitchell Santner-led Black Caps pulverised the Scottish bowling unit to score 254 in 20 overs, their highest-ever total in the format. Michael Bracewell and Mark Chapman scored half-centuries to reach their respective career-best T20I knocks. Chapman was awarded the player of the match for slamming 83 of 44 balls. Overall, New Zealand slammed 18 sixes in their innings to reach their mammoth total.

They then managed to perform well with the ball as well to restrict Scotland to 152/9. Michael Rippon and James Neesham got 2 wickets each, while the rest of the bowling unit picked up 1 wicket each. The Scottish side never stood a chance against the combined talents of Rippon, Neesham, Santner, Ish Sodhi, and Ben Sears.

Weather report for Edinburgh's Grange Cricket Club Ground for the ODI

This all-round fantastic show should make them extremely confident when they take on the hosts in the one-off ODI in Edinburgh on 31 July. The Black Caps will be keen to finish off their New Zealand tour with another victory before they depart for the Netherlands to play a 2-T20I series.

New Zealand have been on a roll recently. They completely whitewashed Ireland in the white ball series. They also annihilated Scotland in the 2-T20I series to secure another clean sweep. The Mitchell Santner-led side will be eager for yet another victory when they take the field at Edinburgh for a one-off One Day International against Scotland on 31 July.

The match will be played at Edinburgh’s Grange Cricket Club Ground from 3:30 pm IST. This is the very same venue where the Black Caps recently crushed Scotland 2-0 in the bilateral T20I series.

Led by Mark Chapman and Michael Bracewell, the visitors reached their highest-ever T20I total in the previous fixture. They also managed to restrict a beleaguered Scottish side to 152 to achieve a 102-run victory. They will be aiming to continue their winning run in the ODI as well.

The pitch at Edinburgh has been of tremendous help to New Zealand’s batting order. Sadly, Scotland have not been able to convert their starts into some fine knocks. They will be looking to overcome their weaknesses and post a big total at this batting-friendly pitch. The hosts will be relying on George Munsey, skipper Richie Berrington, and Chris Greaves to score some runs quickly.

Edinburgh weather report:
There are chances of light rain on 31 July. The minimum temperature will be 9 degrees Celsius while the maximum temperature might be 16 degrees Celsius. Humidity will be over 80 percent. The wind speed will range from 10 to 15 km/h.

Possible Playing XIs:
Scotland:  Richie Berrington (captain), Kyle Coetzer, Matthew Cross, Chris Sole, George Munsey, Michael Leask, Safyaan Sharif, Mark Watt, Hamza Tahir,  Chris Greaves, Gavin Main

New Zealand:  Mitchell Santner (captain), Mark Chapman, Fine Allen, Michael Bracewell, Dane Cleaver, James Neesham, Jacob Duffy, Daryl Mitchell, Ish Sodhi, Michael Rippon, Ben Sears

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the three ODIs against Zimbabwe away from home. The side that will be led by Shikhar Dhawan had a few prominent names such as Deepak Chahar and Washington Sundar making a comeback while Rahul Tripathi has also been called-up.

On the other hand, the right-handed batter KL Rahul wasn't included in the squad for the bilateral series that begins on 18th August, 2022 in Harare. Rahul's omission raised some eyebrows and it was further reported that the batter has been left out due to injury.

But, KL has now made the clarification in a social media post. "I wanted to clarify a couple of things about my health and fitness. My surgery in June was successful and I had begun training with the hope of returning to national duty for the team's tour to West Indies. Unfortunately, as I was nearing a return to full fitness, I tested positive for COVID-19. This naturally pushes things back by a couple of weeks, but I aim to recover as quickly as possible, and be available for selection as soon as I can," he wrote.

"To represent the national team is the highest honour, and I cannot wait to get out there back in blue," he added.

The Men in Blue are slated to play three ODIs against Zimbabwe.

India extended their white ball dominance over the West Indies with a comprehensive 68-run victory in the opening fixture of a five-match T20 International series at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad on Friday.

Fresh from a 3-0 sweep of a One-Day International series at Queen's Park Oval, the tourists were at their most dominant in posting a formidable 190 for six batting before easily restricting the home side to 122 for eight in reply.

Captain Rohit Sharma, one of a handful of first-choice players rested from the ODI matches, laid the foundation for his team's total with a top-score of 64 off 44 balls with seven fours and two sixes highlighting the opener's composed effort.

Dinesh Karthik then gave the innings important late impetus with an unbeaten 41 off just 19 balls, his unbroken seventh-wicket stand of 52 with Ravi Ashwin in the last four overs seeming to drain the West Indies' enthusiasm in the sweltering midday heat.

Karthik's contribution earned him the man of the match award.

Here's how Twitterati reacted to India's win:

How much world cricket revolves around India and the performance of their teams became clear once again in 2017 when the women's side reached the final of the ODI World Cup. It transformed the game and gave women's cricket the deserved attention but it also perpetually put the team under the microscope.

The 2017 Big Bang catapulted the Indian side into the ICC trophy contenders category from the also-ran list in the eyes of the Indian fans and the run-up to every major campaign since then has been dominated by expectations and anxiousness. It's no different this time.

As women's cricket gets ready to make its debut at the Commonwealth Games (CWG), the hopes are for nothing less than gold from Harmanpreet Kaur and Co.

To be honest, the Women in Blue have exceeded expectations (semi-finals in the 2018 T20 World Cup and final in 2020 edition) in recent years despite them being a product of a flawed ecosystem. There's one problem though. India or any other team hoping for the top prize have Australia blocking the road to the gold medal.

Read: Cricket's inclusion in CWG, more matches for women's teams great thing, says Anjum Chopra

Australia: Mighty favourites

Doesn't matter how biased you are, it's difficult to look past Australia as the favourites for the gold medal. They have won all the three World Cups in the last four years (2018, 2020 T20 World Cups and 2022 ODI World Cup). Just this mere stat is good enough to send chills down the spine of opposition teams.

To add to this dominance, the last time they lost a bilateral series was in 2017 against England. The prospect of becoming the first gold medallist should only add extra motivation to the all-conquering side led by Meg Lanning. They will have to make a few adjustments though. Coach Matthew Mott has left the team and star all-rounder Ellyse Perry isn't in the best of touch. But the rise of Alana King and Darcie Brown — both ODI World Cup winners — is just another sign of the depth that is available in the country and of a system that keeps churning out champions.

India's chances

Australia have the strongest claim for the gold but sport has a knack for swinging surprises when it's least expected. India have to believe that can happen at the CWG. Skipper Harmanpreet has already spoken about her team pursuing a "killer attitude" to create an identity of their own and for a side now stepping out of the shadows of stalwarts Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami, they have enough motivation to lay down the marker.

India squad for CWG 2022: Top-heavy team looks short on lower-order firepower

Though how they start the tournament would be of extreme importance despite them being part of the so-called easier group. They are in Group A with Australia, Barbados and Pakistan, while Group B consists of Sri Lanka, England, New Zealand and South Africa. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals.

Sabbineni Meghana and Pooja Vastrakar tested positive ahead of CWG and while the former has already left for England, all-rounder Vastrakar is reportedly set to miss the first two matches against Australia and Pakistan. Vastrakar has established herself as an indispensable member of the side recently and is one of the three pacers India have picked for CWG. Her absence not only dents the pace department but also weakens the lower-order batting. In absence of Richa Ghosh, Vastrakar is the only pure hard-hitting lower-order batter that India have unless they decide to push a top-order batter down the lineup.

India's run rate has been on a constant rise and the inclusion of Yastika Bhatia, Meghana combined with the ball-hitting prowess of Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Harmanpreet and Vastrakar has put India in a comfortable place. The batting looks top-heavy, but if India manage to sort out lower-order issues, a medal shouldn't be a problem.

Other contenders

England, New Zealand and South Africa are other top contenders for a medal. Hosts England are blessed with a number of top-class players and are well capable of even winning the gold, but the big question is, do they know what it takes to get past Australia?

South Africa made it to the semi-finals of the 2022 ODI World Cup but they will be without Lizelle Lee, who has retired, and Marizanne Kapp, who is injured. Dane van Niekerk continues to be unavailable and that has seriously dented the team's strength. They will need the replacement players to produce their A game at the CWG.

A solid unit no doubt, New Zealand aren't always the best side in a big tournament and it's this reputation they would need to fight first to make a mark at the CWG.

Tournament details for India

India will begin their campaign against Australia on 29 July.

Fixtures:

India vs Australia: 29 July, 4.30 pm IST

India vs Pakistan: 31 July, 4.30 pm IST

India vs Barbados: 3 August, 11.30 pm IST

Team India squad: Harmanpreet Kaur (C), Smriti Mandhana (VC), Shafali Verma, S Meghana, Taniyaa Bhatia (Wk), Yastika Bhatia (Wk), Deepti Sharma, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Pooja Vastrakar, Meghna Singh, Renuka Thakur, Jemimah Rodrigues, Radha Yadav, Harleen Deol, Sneh Rana.

After an edge-of-the-seat thriller in the first ODI, India and West Indies lock horns again on Sunday in the second game of the three-match series.

India will be high on confidence as they look to continue their winning streak and wrap up the series in the second match itself. West Indies, however, will hope to bounce back and level the series after losing the first match by just three runs and having a ‘bittersweet’ experience in captain Nicholas Pooran's words.

The Men in Maroon will be happier though with the way they batted in the last match after a string of poor performances in their previous tournaments. Pooran also admitted that they can do well if they bat complete 50 overs.

The hosts were decent with the ball as well. They came back strongly after the 35th over in the first innings when India were cruising and seemed to post a total of more than 350 with ease. The visitors were allowed only 83 runs in the last 15 overs despite having eight wickets in hand.

India, despite the win, will look to finish the innings better with the likes of Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson, Deepak Hooda, and Axar Patel in the middle order. They failed to capitalize on a well-settled platform in the first match and would want to correct that in the series going forward, with the limited opportunities they have.

Shreyas Iyer played a crucial innings of 54 runs after not being amongst runs during the tour of England. AP Photo

They were not clinical with the ball but managed to snatch victory from the Caribbean’s hands. Mohammed Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Shardul Thakur will look to continue their form. Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer, and Shubman Gill will also look to build up more and cement their place in the long run amidst stiff competition once the ODI regulars come back.

Windies were boosted by the return of Jason Holder, but being infected with Covid-19 has kept him out of the series. It will be interesting to see if they are willing to make changes to the playing XI.

India are also expected to go with the same team unless they decide to give a chance to Arshdeep Singh or Avesh Khan.

Another high-scoring match is anticipated at the same venue where the first ODI was played.

When: 24 July, 9:30 AM local, 7 PM IST

Toss update: Ireland won the toss and opted to bat in the third and final T20I against New Zealand in Belfast on Friday.

The Black Caps are unbeaten in their trip to Ireland, having earlier clinched the ODI series 3-0 in Dublin. The caravan then moved to Belfast, where the Kiwis maintained their winning momentum with victories in the first two T20Is by sizeable margins (31 runs and 88 runs respectively).

Ireland will look to close this limited-overs series with a victory, but more importantly, the hosts would be hoping for a much improved show from their batters. Chasing a target of 180 in the second T20I, Ireland were bundled out for just 91, with Mark Adair top-scoring with 27 runs. Ish Sodhi and Michael Bracewell had taken three wickets each.

Ravindra Jadeja, who will be Shikhar Dhawan's deputy in the upcoming three-match ODI series vs West Indies, is likely to top an elite list featuring the likes of Courtney Walsh, Kapil Dev and Anil Kumble. Jadeja just needs four wickets to rise to top of the table of most wickets in India-West Indies.

Most wickets in India-West Indies ODIs:

Courtney Walsh: 44 wickets in 38 matches at 24.15
Kapil Dev: 43 wickets in 42 matches at 28.88
Anil Kumble: 41 wickets in 26 matches at 23.73
Ravindra Jadeja: 41 wickets in 29 matches at 29.87
Mohammed Shami: 37 wickets in 18 matches at 22.54

After missing most of the season post the IPL due to injury, Ravindra Jadeja is now back to being a regular name in the Indian squads. He featured in all three formats during the recent tour of England and had a substantial contribution with the bat - hundred in Edgbaston Test - which India lost to settle for a 2-2 scoreline in the five-Test series.

There are some reports of Jadeja likely missing out the three-ODI series but there is no official word from the BCCI or the team management yet.

India squad for 3 ODIs: Shikhar Dhawan (Captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Deepak Hooda, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan (WK), Sanju Samson (WK), Ravindra Jadeja (Vice Captain), Shardul Thakur , Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Avesh Khan, Famous Krishna, Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh.

India squad for 5 T20Is: Rohit Sharma (captain), Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Shreyas Iyer, Dinesh Karthik, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, R Ashwin, Ravi Bishnoi , Kuldeep Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Avesh Khan, Harshal Patel and Arshdeep Singh.

Virat Kohli missing the ODI and T20I series in West Indies has attracted criticism from all quarters. Former India captains Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar had earlier questioned the decision, and now another former Indian captain, Dilip Vengsarkar, said "resting him (Kohli) sends a wrong signal".

"I don't understand why the Indian selectors have rested him for the West Indies series. If he is in their scheme of things for the T20 World Cup in Australia, he should play as many games as possible to get his form and confidence back. That would help him. Resting him sends a wrong signal because if he is going to Australia, then he will go without really big scores behind him. That would worry him as well. I always feel that when you are not scoring runs, it's important to play as many matches as possible and spend time in the middle, and get back among the runs. This game is all about confidence," Vengsarkar told Khaleej Times.

Kohli had earlier played in the T20I and ODI series vs England where returns weren't encouraging for the former Indian skipper. The dashing right-hander is undergoing an extended lean patch with the bat and failed to make a substantial contribution in the rescheduled fifth Test against England too. It will be interesting to see how Kohli approaches the T20 World Cup as there are some series lined up before the tournament gets underway Down Under.

India squad for 3 ODIs: Shikhar Dhawan (Captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Deepak Hooda, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan (WK), Sanju Samson (WK), Ravindra Jadeja (Vice Captain), Shardul Thakur , Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Avesh Khan, Famous Krishna, Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh.

India squad for 5 T20Is: Rohit Sharma (captain), Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Shreyas Iyer, Dinesh Karthik, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, R Ashwin, Ravi Bishnoi , Kuldeep Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Avesh Khan, Harshal Patel and Arshdeep Singh.

India commence the three-match ODI series West Indies on Friday. In absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma, who has been rested for this series and will return to lead in the T20Is, Shikhar Dhawan will lead the side which boasts of young faces like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson.

Dhawan didn't have a good run in the England ODIs as the elegant southpaw could only manage 41 runs in his three outings. Leading the side for the second time, he earlier led India during the tour of Sri Lanka, Dhawan would like to hit form and cement his position in the ODI format as he has failed to find spots in the T20I and Test squads.

The Delhi batsman has scored 348 runs in 14 ODI matches in the West Indies. If he can improve his tally, he has a good chance to overtake the likes of Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni, and also inch closer to Virat Kohli in the list of most ODI runs by India batters in West Indies.

Most ODI runs by India batters in West Indies

Virat Kohli: 790 runs in 15 matches

MS Dhoni: 458 runs in 15 matches

Yuvraj Singh:  419 runs in 14 matches

Rohit Sharma: 408 runs in 14 matches

Shikhar Dhawan:  348 runs in 14 matches

Ahead of the series opener, Dhawan, in a video posted by BCCI, shared his thoughts on the upcoming series and feels West Indies is a great chance for the youngsters to "peak".

"So the youngsters who will be going on the tour, they aren't just young but they're mature as well and they will get the exposure playing in West Indies. And they have played in the IPL as well," said Dhawan.

"With all this experience and youth ness in our ranks, I feel we will have a great series. And lots of smiles, lots of wins. Now we have won such a big series in England, but everybody couldn't do their best."

"So, West Indies is a great opportunity for us to peak over there and show our talent," he added.

The preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia have now entered the business end with every team applying finishing touches to their core for the event. India are now different, and the side would now look at giving maximum game-time to their key players. The wicketkeeper spot has been in the news after inconsistent returns from Rishabh Pant in the recent T20I fixtures for the country and the rising stocks of Dinesh Karthik. Ishan Kishan, at top of the order, is another option. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has backed his Delhi Capitals skipper Pant to come good for the country and has also put his weight behind in-form Karthik.

"We have seen what Rishabh is capable of in 50-over cricket and I know absolutely what he is capable of in the T20 game. Dinesh Karthik has had his best IPL ever just very recently ... and I would be trying to find every possible way to have both of those guys in my team. Rishabh to bat, in that three-four-five range, and have Dinesh and maybe Hardik Pandya... if you have those guys finishing for you, well that batting line-up looks very, very dangerous," Ponting said on The ICC Review Show.

Ponting further highlighted the problem of plenty for the Indian management and feels on current form it will be difficult for the selectors to ignore Suryakumar Yadav. The Mumbai right-hander has been in top touch with the bat and was mighty impressive during the limited overs series vs England.

"Obviously that means someone like (Ishan) Kishan or Surya (Suryakumar Yadav) or (Shreyas) Iyer, someone like that, might miss out and I don't think Surya will miss out given his current form. But when you got so much talent picking an Indian team is always going to be difficult and Pant and Karthik would be the two, I would pick ahead of Kishan right now," mentioned Ponting.

Mohammed Amir in the 2017 Champions Trophy final, Trent Boult in the 2019 World Cup semi-final, Shaheen Afridi in 2021 T20 World Cup fixture and now Reece Topley in the England ODIs. India and the struggle against left-arm seamers continues. The Men in Blue have found going tough against left-arm quicks and the top-order comprising of Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli struggled in the recently concluded ODI series vs England. Former India opener Wasim Jaffer feels "this is one area I feel Indian batters need to improve".

“Talking from India’s batting perspective, they need to improve how they play left-arm seamers. That has been a concern, including Trent Boult, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Reece Topley probably in the series. That is one box they need to tick, where they are getting some Indian bowlers to bowl them in the nets. That has been a concern, when the ball gets old it’s fine but those bowlers have troubled the Indian batters. This is one area I feel Indian batters need to improve going forward," Jaffer told News18.

Jaffer's views were echoed by former England captain Nasser Hussain who, in a chat with Sony Sports Network, highlighted the moments India batters struggled against left-arm seamers.

“They need to play to left arm [pace bowling] a little bit better. History tells you that Shaheen Shah Afridi blew them away one evening in Dubai, Mohammad Amir blew them away one afternoon at the Oval in a final, and Reece Topley has blown them away here [at Old Trafford].

“They need to be a bit more tensed to their batting so some of their seamers will come down in a T20, in the last two overs with 20 to win. One of those seamers will need them to get across the line,” Hussain added.

England opener Jason Roy turns a year older today. The right-handed batter has proved indispensable to his side in the limited-overs format and played an important part in securing their maiden World Cup win in 2019.

Roy was born on 21 July 1990 in South Africa’s Durban. His family shifted to England when he was 10. He soon made his mark for Surrey and was noticed by the selectors. His aggressive strokeplay led him to make his way into the T20I team against India in 2014. The next year, the swashbuckling opener made his ODI debut.

He was one of the stars of England’s 2019 World Cup campaign, where he stunned onlookers with his fiery performances. As Jason Roy turns 32, here is a look at some of his best performances:

180 vs Australia (2018): The England opener put up a double-century stand with Joe Root in the first Australia-England ODI at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. After the hosts put up a target of 304 courtesy Aaron Finch’s ton, it was Jason Roy’s sublime knock that guided England to a 5-wicket win. The right-handed batter also slammed the highest individual score at the MCG, as well as the highest score by an England batter, and was awarded the player of the match for his innings.

162 vs Sri Lanka (2016): Roy once again won the player of the match for his match winning knock of 162 runs. The opener slammed bowlers all over the park for 3 sixes and 13 fours before he was dismissed by Nuwan Pradeep. His blistering innings is the joint-fourth highest score by an English batter in ODIs.

153 vs Bangladesh (2019): In the 2019 World Cup campaign, Jason Roy steered his side to victory against Bangladesh. The opener’s 153-run knock helped England reach a mammoth total of 386 against the Mushfiqur Rahim-led side. Roy’s blistering knock was studded with boundaries - 14 fours and 5 sixes. England then romped to a 106-run victory due to Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes picking up 3 wickets each.

114 vs Pakistan (2019): In the Trent Bridge ODI, the right-handed opener led his side to a thrilling victory. After Babar Azam helped the visitors put up 340 on the scoreboard, Roy and Ben Stokes took up the mantle of steering their side to a win. For his 114 off 123 deliveries, the opener was once again awarded the player of the match.

101* vs Netherlands (2022): Jason Roy slammed his first ODI century since the 2019 World Cup in 86 deliveries. He put up an unbroken 163-run stand with Jos Buttler to clinch victory in just 30.1 overs. The blazing partnership between the two batters led England to a 3-0 clean sweep in the series.

The final match of India's tour to England is here and at stake is the ODI series trophy. India began the 50-over assignment with a comprehensive 10-wicket win but were soon handed a resounding 110-run defeat in the second ODI as England levelled the three-match series 1-1.

On Sunday, both teams will take the field at the Old Trafford ground in Manchester with an aim to clinch the ODI series. The momentum is with the home side having made a sensational comeback in the second ODI after losing the T20I series 2-1 and the first ODI. Batting had been their biggest concern and while they didn't have big individual scores to show for in the Lord's ODI, they had middling contributions from top to lower order as they put up 246 batting first.

In reply, India had a disastrous start with openers falling for a total of nine runs. Virat Kohli made 16 and Rishabh Pant was out for a duck. Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami got to 20s but Reece Topley's inspired spell of 6/24 from 9.5 overs had India shot out for just 146.

Click here to find out when and where to watch the 3rd ODI in India

Both teams are yet to find their best batting form and that is where the third ODI could also be decided. England will need its top order to fire. In the second ODI, the 88-run contribution from Moeen Ali and David Willey from the lower order saved them from the blushes but they can't always rely on lower-order heroics. Similarly for India, the aim should be to avoid losing early wickets. A big score is due from Kohli and one would hope Sunday is when it arrives.

Bowling wise, both teams have had fairly good performances so far. While Jasprit Bumrah wreaked havoc in the first ODI, Yuzvendra Chahal was the star bowler for India at the Lord's. Topley from England has emerged as a nuisance for India and the batters will look to curtail this threat in the final ODI.

"We have spoken about that a lot, it has happened in the 2019 World Cup, also the Champions trophy, and a few other games as well where we were put under pressure and we lost wickets and we were 20 for 3 or 40 for 4, that is where I want the guys to change their mindset a little bit and try and see if they can be a little positive and try and take the game on," India captain Rohit Sharma said after the second ODI talking about his team's batting collapse.

England probable XI: Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler (c & wk), Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Craig Overton, David Willey, Brydon Carse, Reece Topley.

India probable XI: Rohit Sharma (c), Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, Prasidh Krishna.

Bangladesh opening batter Tamim Iqbal has announced his retirement from T20I Cricket after the ODI series against West Indies.

Tamim, shortly after the third ODI that Bangladesh won by four wickets, wrote a message on his Facebook page in Bangla, “Consider me retired from T20 internationals from today. Thanks, everyone.”

There were speculations about Tamim’s retirement from T20Is as he had availed a break from the shortest format in January 2022.

He had announced a six-month break back then. "My full focus will be on Tests and ODIs. We are preparing for the World Test Championship and qualification for the 2023 World Cup. I will not be thinking about T20Is in the next six months. I hope that those playing will do so well, that the team won't need me in T20Is. But if God forbid the team or cricket board needs me, and I am ready, I will possibly think about it," Tamim had said while announcing the break at a media interaction.

Tamim also pulled out voluntarily from the 2021 T20 World Cup in UAE, giving other openers an extended run. He had hinted that playing all three formats was not wise for him at this stage of his career.

Tamim last played a T20I against Zimbabwe in March 2020 and returned with 41 runs of 33 deliveries. Tamim played 75 out of the 84 games Bangladesh played during his tenure and is the third highest run-getter for his country in the format with 1,701 runs at an average of 24.65 and a strike rate of 117.47. Tamim also remains the only T20I centurion for Bangladesh to date. He also has seven half-centuries to his name.

The southpaw is expected to continue playing domestic/ franchise T20 cricket. He is also the all-time leading run scorer in the BPL.

Under Tamim’s leadership, Bangladesh defeated West Indies 3-0 in the ODI series. They have won five consecutive ODI series now under his leadership.

While the Blackcaps will eye a clinical show and aim for a white wash, Ireland will try to have a win under their belt after coming so close on both occasions. And if they win, it will not be an upset, given the brand of cricket they have played.

London: India skipper Rohit Sharma appeared to be exhausted with answering repeated questions surrounding Virat Kohli and his lack of runs after the second ODI against England on Thursday. Sharma said a batter of his calibre doesn’t need any assurance and the phase is part of any cricketer’s career.

Kohli returned to the playing XI for the second ODI at Lord's having missed the first with a niggle. The time out didn't help his slump as he scored 16 runs from 25 balls before falling to David Willey. Once again, Kohli started strong with a gorgeous straight drive off Reece Topley to open his account. He added two more boundaries, again to Topley, to quickly tick along.

But his stay in the middle was disrupted by Willey who found an edge off Kohli's bat which carried comfortably for wicketkeeper Jos Buttler.

“Virat Kohli doesn’t need reassurance from him as he is too good a player,” said Rohit after the second ODI on Thursday.

“Why is there even a debate or discussion on Virat Kohli’s form. Like I said in the last press conference. When someone is scoring consistently for so long, we can’t overlook his contribution if he is not scoring in one or two series or in one or two years. We know the importance of Virat Kohli.”

“Form upar neeche hota hai, player (Virat Kohli) ka quality kabhi kharab nahi hota hai. (There will always be ups and downs in the cricketer’s form but players’ quality will never fade away.) We should always keep this in mind that there is a quality in certain players and we as a team back that quality. Every cricketer goes through this rough phase, it is a part and parcel our lives,” he added.

In numbers: Virat Kohli played more than Grade A+, Grade A contracted teammates since his last century

"A player like him, who has played for so many years, scored so many runs and has won so many matches, for him, he only needs one or two good innings. That is my thinking and I am sure all those who follow cricket will think similarly," Rohit stated.

Kohli has now gone 77 consecutive international innings without a century. His last ton came against Bangladesh in November 2019 at the Eden Gardens. In the five innings in England this month, Kohli's returns have been 11, 20, 1, 11 and 16 across formats.

England skipper Jos Buttler, too, extended his support for Kohli after the ODI in London. “I am incredibly surprised by the criticism he is getting,” said Buttler.

“It is quite refreshing for the rest of us that he (Kohli) is human and he too can have a couple of low scores. He is one of the best players if not the best player in ODI cricket. He has been a fantastic player for so many years. As a captain you will always back the class of Virat Kohli,” said Buttler.
