Deepak Hooda produced a master-class knock, becoming only the fourth Indian to hit a T20 International century, as the visiting side posted a mammoth 225 for 7 against Ireland in the second and final match in Malahide on Tuesday.

During his maiden T20I ton (104 off 57 balls), Hooda showed he belonged to the big stage with his scintillating stroke play, both off the front and the backfoot.

While Hooda was elegant and at ease on the frontfoot, he was equally good on the backfoot, dispatching the ball over the midwicket boundary for a few sixes.

Hooda decorated his knock with nine 4s and six hits over the fence. He was ably supported by Sanju Samson, who, opening the batting in place of injured Ruturaj Gaikwad, played second fiddle but grabbed his opportunity with both hands.

Samson made 77 off 42 balls with the help of nine boundaries and four sixes.

Both Hooda and Samson's strokeplay down the ground were a treat for the eyes.

But India did not have the best of starts as they lost Ishan Kishan (3) early in the third over. The left-handed opener wasted an opportunity, nicking a Mark Adair delivery to Lorcan Tucker behind the stumps in the third over.

Hooda and Samson joined hands and the duo batted effortlessly, albeit handing two difficult chances, to share 176 runs off just 85 balls to lay the foundation for India's huge total.

It was a one-way traffic after Kishan's dimissal as Hooda and Samson toyed with the Irish bowlers and did not let them settle down.

Except for a difficult chance that Paul Stirling dropped at extra-cover in the eighth over, Hooda played a perfect knock.

The Twitterati as usual blew out of proportions. Here's how Twitter reacted to India's batting display in the series finale at The Village:

Deepak Hooda and Sanju Samson broke the record for India's highest partnership in T20Is to help the visitors post a commanding 225/7 against Ireland at Malahide on Tuesday.

The partnership also broke the record of the highest second-wicket partnership in all T20Is.

Samson scored 67 of 34 balls, while Hooda contributed 98 of just 53 deliveries to the second-wicket partnership. The two put up a partnership of 176 runs in just 87 deliveries at a strike rate of more than 200.

India lost Ishan Kishan at the start of the third over with just 13 on board. However, the duo of Hooda and Samson took off from there and never looked back.

In the process, they broke the record for the highest second-wicket partnership in all T20Is, breaking the previous best — an unbroken 167 between Jos Buttler and Dawid Malan against South Africa in Cape Town in 2020.

The partnership was also the highest for India for any wicket in T20Is, surpassing the previous best of 165 between Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul. The earlier record was for the first wicket against Sri Lanka in Indore in 2017.

Samson started on a comparatively slower note and played a second fiddle to Hooda. Hooda who continued from where he left off in the first match on Sunday, punished the bowlers to all the parts of the ground.

Hooda pulled the short-pitched deliveries, played lofted drives to good-length of half volley deliveries, and cut or sliced anything bowled on the off-stump.

Samson soon joined Hooda in the boundary riot and hit nine 4s and four 6s in his innings of 77.

Hooda also scored his maiden international century after Samson got out. He hit nine 4s and six 6s in his innings of 104. Hooda also became only the fourth Indian batter to score a century in T20Is after Suresh Raina, KL Rahul, and Rohit Sharma.

India finished their innings at 225 for the loss of seven wickets as the middle order collapsed in the last three overs. However, the second-wicket partnership made sure that India had their fourth-highest total in T20Is.

Deepak Hooda joined an exclusive club on Tuesday as he became only the fourth Indian to score a century in Twenty20 Internationals.

Hooda achieved the milestone during the second and final T20I against Ireland at The Village in Malahide on the outskirts of national capital Dublin, reaching the three-figure mark in just 55 deliveries in what was a knock of the highest quality. The knock also happens to be his first international ton, surpassing his personal best of 47*, that he had achieved just two days back against the same opposition.

The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) all-rounder, promoted to open in the series opener on Sunday, but coming in at one-down in this game, smashed nine 4s and six 6s during his stay at the crease. He reached the milestone with a single off Josh Little at the start of the 18th over, though he would get dismissed in the final delivery of the same over, getting caught by Andy McBrine.

He was ably assisted by wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson, who replaced Ruturaj Gaikwad as Ishan Kishan's opening partner and made the most of the opportunity with a blazing 77 off 42 balls. The pair stitched a record 176-run stand for the second wicket and helped the Men in Blue recover from Kishan's early dismissal with just 13 on the board.

Hooda's knock ensured India went past the 200-run mark rather comfortably and even though they lost wickets in a heap in the slog overs, they still ended up with a formidable 225/7 — their fourth-highest total in the format.

India's regular skipper Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and former batter Suresh Raina are the only other Indians to have scored a ton in the format, with Raina the first to achieve the feat with his 101 against South Africa in the 2010 ICC World T20.

Rohit, meanwhile, has achieved the milestone four times, including his 118 against Sri Lanka in 2017 that is the highest individual score by an Indian in the format. Rahul, meanwhile, has two tons in the format — 110 not out and 101 not out against West Indies and England respectively.

India spinner Kuldeep Yadav has begun his rehabilitation from a hand injury at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. The cricketer suffered the injury on his right hand while batting in the nets ahead of India's T20I series against South Africa that was played at home earlier this month.

Kuldeep posted a photo on his Twitter account on Monday stating that he is "back at NCA" for rehabilitation.

Apart from being ruled out of the five-match home series against South Africa, Kuldeep also missed the plane to the UK for the two-match T20I series against Ireland, which India currently lead 1-0.

India are still to announce the squad for the white-ball leg of the England tour where they are scheduled to play three T20Is and as many ODIs. It will be interesting to see whether Kuldeep will feature in the squads. However, given the short turnaround time, the 27-year-old spinner is expected to miss the upcoming Indian matches.

Kuldeep last played for India in February against Sri Lanka and saw his stock go down in recent years before bouncing back handsomely in IPL 2022. Playing for Delhi Capitals, the left-arm wrist-spinner scalped 21 wickets from 21 matches at an average of 19.95. He was the fifth-highest wicket-taker in the tournament.

The spinner will now be looking to quickly get back to playing international cricket after successfully completing his rehabilitation.

Three and a half weeks is a long time in cricket apparently. At the start of June England were at rock bottom, they had managed just two wins in their previous five Test series – a miserable run of 18 games stretching back to February 2021 – not many gave them much hope against the reigning World Test Championship holders New Zealand.

And yet here we all are, England 3-0 winners in a pulsating trio of Tests that not only upended the form book but at points made one question the entire fabric of Test cricket as we know it. New Zealand depart the country well and truly Bazwashed.

Eyes around the world have no doubt been rolling at every mention of ‘Bazball’ in recent weeks and yet in this series England performed time and time again – confusing fans and pundits alike by actually delivering on the sort of hyperbolic pre-match promises that have been broken so routinely in recent years that it has begun to approach levels of black comedy.

England’s new strategy has essentially been employing a cool boy, from a few years above at school, as their head coach and then powering the side with the energy of a team all showing off to try and impress him. It has been remarkably successful.

Perhaps the only real casualty of all this was Jack Leach, his tragicomic concussion at Lord’s occurring after getting a little too fired up watching Youtube compilations of his new coach Brendon McCullum’s athletic boundary fielding, but even he was back in the side by the next Test and finished the series seemingly a man reborn, with a ten-wicket haul and a Player of the Match award under his belt.

Leach indeed has encapsulated much of what this burgeoning new Ben Stokes-McCullum era is all about, instilled with a sense of trust and belief from captain and coach, he thrived in this Headingley Test, his twin five-wicket hauls the cornerstone on which this third successive remarkable victory was built.

Nobody however has illustrated the sharp turnaround in England’s fortunes quite like Jonny Bairstow. He came into the series with some questioning his place in the side, he finishes it having made 394 runs at an absurd strike rate of 120.12, including back-to-back centuries both of which most players would struggle to match the quality of over the course of their entire careers.

Bairstow faced 54.4 overs worth of bowling over the course of the series and was 394/5 – he basically did a passable impression of an excellent ODI team all by himself.

If Bairstow’s transformation was the most eye-catching embodiment of England’s new found groove, there were more subtle signs of encouragement elsewhere – from Joe Root’s seamless transition back into the ranks after his captaincy reign ended, with a few devilish ramp shots thrown in for good measure, to hints that Ollie Pope might just be beginning to crack Test cricket, and the impressive start to the international game made by Matt Potts.

Next though come India roaring over the horizon, a month ago no doubt fancying their chances against the same meek rabble they outclassed for much of last summer, now perhaps not quite so sure. Can England sustain this incredible run? Fortunately, we don’t have to wait long to find out and whatever the answer the results look sure to be entertaining.

Day 3 report: Kemar Roach reached the landmark of 250 test wickets as West Indies dominated the third day of the second test with Bangladesh fighting to avoid an innings defeat.

Bangladesh was reduced to 132-6 in its second innings at stumps on Sunday and still trailed the hosts by 42 runs at Daren Sammy Stadium.

Roach took the first three wickets to finish the day on 3-32 in 10 overs and move to 252 wickets in his 73rd test for West Indies. Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal (4) was caught behind to give the pacer his 250th wicket.

Roach is now the sixth-highest test wicket-taker for West Indies. Another quick, Courtney Walsh, tops that list with 519 wickets in 132 matches.

Roach went on to dismiss opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy (13) and Anamul Haque (4) to leave Bangladesh struggling on 32-3.

Najmul Hossain Shanto is the top scorer so far for Bangladesh in its innings with a 91-ball 42. He was also caught behind off Alzarri Joseph (2-31).

West Indies earlier resumed on 340-5 — thanks to a chanceless and unbeaten 126 from allrounder Kyle Mayers — and extended its overnight lead of 106 to 174 after being dismissed for 408 in the first innings.

Mayers was dismissed by Khaled Ahmed after moving on to 146, caught by Shoriful Islam. Mayers' innings included 18 fours and two sixes. Ahmed took 5-106.

Play was called off for the day at 5:30 p.m. local time after heavy rain.

Bangladesh scored a sub-par 234 in the first innings.

West Indies won the first test in Antigua in just over three days, by seven wickets.

Three T20 games and a three-match ODI series are also scheduled.

Given the general air of positivity that usually circulates around New Zealand cricket it is unlikely to be a point that they will dwell on, but things – in an already quietly disappointing series for the tourists – could have been a lot worse.

But for a slight calf injury to Henry Nicholls, Daryl Mitchell would not have played in the first Test at Lord’s, he might not have even appeared in the series at all – and as Day One at Headingley proved once again, without him New Zealand’s summer sojourn in England would be looking even bleaker than it already does.

Mitchell has been the standout for the Black Caps, coming into this Test no man on either side had scored more runs than his 373 – with two hundreds and a fifty in four innings this series he has been New Zealand’s model of consistently in a faintly underwhelming tour.

And obviously because this is cricket, what was Mitchell’s reward for all this? A demotion one place down the order as New Zealand rejigged their line up for the third Test. Fortunately for the Black Caps it was not a slight that the all-rounder took to heart, picking up where he left off at Trent Bridge on another otherwise difficult day for the tourists.

It was not of course meant to go like this for New Zealand, winning the toss and batting on a gloriously sunny Leeds day they would have been dreaming of piling on the runs against a largely untested England attack. It was a reverie Stuart Broad, that attack’s one bastion of experience, shattered inside six balls – Tom Latham nibbling to first slip without a run even on the board.

By the time Mitchell came to the crease, New Zealand were 83/4, the wheels if not quite coming off then starting to wobble a little ominously. There was a slice of luck early on – England failing to review when Matt Potts had him trapped in front LBW having made just 8, a reprieve he did his best to capitalise from.

At the close he was unbeaten on 78, his 102-run partnership with the other thorn in England’s side this series, Tom Blundell, taking New Zealand to a more respectable 225/5.

It was an innings of superb control – indeed since statisticians CricViz have started measuring these things, only two batsmen have scored more than 300 runs in a series and had a lower percentage of false shots than Mitchell’s 11% – leaving his average in the series overnight over 150, a number that would still be an unworldly 112.75 should he be dismissed first ball tomorrow.

Presumably however in order to balance the scales of cricketing justice, the gods did have one morsel of misfortune lined up for Mitchell, his unwitting participation in the dismissal of Henry Nicholls.

It was a moment to launch a thousand tweets, Nicholls’ firmly struck drive down the ground ricocheting off Mitchell’s bat – the middle naturally, given the series he is having – and looping up to a grateful Alex Lees at mid off. Another freakish dismissal to add to the sport’s rich pantheon.

That moment aside it was another stellar day for Mitchell, the extent of his value to this New Zealand side might not have been apparent before the start of the series, there can be no doubting it now.

England vs New Zealand 3rd Test: England head into the third Test at Headingley with doubts over the health of captain Ben Stokes as they chase a 3-0 series clean sweep against New Zealand.

Stokes missed training on Tuesday through illness, with a team spokesman saying the all-rounder tested negative for the coronavirus and was being kept away from the squad as a precautionary measure.

New Zealand have had several positive cases in their squad during the tour, with Black Caps skipper Kane Williamson ruled out of the second Test.

As well as Williamson, the tourists have also seen Henry Nicholls, Devon Conway, Michael Bracewell and two members of their backroom team return positive results in England.

All four players are fit and available to play in Leeds this week.

With England having already won the New Zealand series, the hosts have made one injury enforced change. James Anderson is sitting out with Jamie Overton coming in to make his England debut.

England face a re-arranged finale to last year's Covid-postponed Test series against India, starting at Edgbaston on 1 July.

Coming into this campaign against the world Test champions, England had won just one of their previous 17 matches at this level.

Yet they have made a fine start to life under their new leadership duo of Stokes and red-ball coach Brendon McCullum, making good on the former New Zealand captain's aim of playing more positive cricket.

England's Jonny Bairstow is sure to receive a hero's reception on his Yorkshire home ground following his stunning 136 at Trent Bridge that turned a seeming difficult pursuit of 299 into a victory target they achieved with remarkable ease.

India batter and former captain Virat Kohli, in his yet another on-field antics, tried to make his bat stand on its toe end similar to what Joe Root did in the second Test match against New Zealand.

The batter was on the non-striker’s end when he tried to stand his bat first on his right side and then on his left side but the bat leaned towards him on both occasions. The video however went viral on social media.

Watch the video here:

Joe Root made his bat stand in the first Test match against New Zealand at Lord’s. The video of his antic immediately went viral and he was hailed as a magician and a sorcerer. Kohli tried to replicate the magic of his English counterpart but failed to do so. Root with a century in the second Test match, equalled Kohli’s tally of 27 centuries.

India are playing a four-day practice match against the English division 2 county team Leicestershire before the rescheduled Test match against England.

Kohli looked in good touch with the bat before he got out leg-before-wicket to Roman Walker. He hit four 4s and a six in his 69-ball 33 and played some trademark cover drives to the delight of his fans.

Rain forced day one of the match to end early as India managed to score 246 for the loss of eight wickets in 60 overs.  Kohli and Bharat steadied the ship after India had lost five wickets inside 100 runs. However, KS Bharat was the highest scorer at 70* and will resume batting tomorrow alongside Mohammed Shami.

Jasprit Bumrah, Cheteshwar Pujara, Prasidh Krishna, and Rishabh Pant are playing for the Leicestershire team. While Krishna managed to bag one wicket, Bumrah went wicketless in his spell of nine overs.

The five-match T20I series between India and South Africa ended in a 2-2 draw after the decider in Bengaluru was called off due to rain on Sunday evening.

The Indian team was led by wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant after KL Rahul was ruled out due to injury. Pant didn’t really have a great start to his captaincy career as he lost two matches on the trot to concede a 0-2 lead to the Proteas.

But the hosts fought back well in the third and fourth games to make a comeback as they clinched convincing wins in both these encounters.

While the series couldn’t have a winner, there were a lot of individual performances that made headlines.

Ishan Kishan’s form

Opener Ishan Kishan had a brilliant time with the bat in the series against South Africa after he hit a couple of fifties and a 30-plus score in the series.

The left-handed batter’s responsibility was to provide the side with a brisk start and he did exactly the same, especially in the third match where he put up a stand of 97 runs with Ruturaj Gaikwad for the first wicket.

Gaikwad too scored a fifty in that match as India clinched their first win of the series to stay alive.

Pandya, DK’s magic in middle-order

The IPL 2022 has turned fortunes for Dinesh Karthik after he emerged as the new “finisher” for RCB. The right-handed batter’s specialty in the recently-concluded edition of the cash-rich league was to chip in valuable runs in the death overs.

The Indian team management expected the similar kind of role from him while he donned the blue jersey and this happened in an important fixture where the hosts needed someone to stick around with Hardik Pandya, who had already shown his intentions earlier in the series after scoring some quick-fire runs.

During the penultimate game, the home side was in a spot of bother and were struggling at 81/4 in the 13th over. While they needed a partnership to get back on track, the Indian team couldn’t afford to use up too many balls either.

Then came the Pandya and Karthik show. The two batters got their eye in and then hammered the South African bowlers all around to put up a partnership of 65 runs for the fifth wicket.

Pandya was eventually out for 46 off 31 but DK went on to scored 55 off 27 deliveries which included nine fours and two maximums, his maiden T20I fifty.

India eventually posted 169/6 in 20 overs in Rajkot and later the bowlers did their job and bundled out the Proteas for 87 to win the match by 82 runs.

Youngsters shine when it was most needed

India were already on backfoot after the conclusion of first two T20Is and needed to win the next two clashes to stay alive in the series.

Batting first in the third T20I, India scored 179/5 in 20 overs, a total that looked defendable. But it was Harshal Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal who rattled the South African batting and didn’t let them get into the groove.

Harshal returned with a four-wicket haul while Chahal had three wickets to his name as the visitors were bundled out for 131.

In the next game, scored 169/6 in 20 overs, courtesy a batting masterclass from Karthik. This time it was Avesh Khan who took the onus and ripped apart the South Arican batting.

The right-handed pacer bagged a four-fer for 18 runs in 4 overs.

Shreyas Iyer’s form a concern

India batter Shreyas Iyer’s form has become a cause of concern at the moment. The right-hander did score a 40 and a 36 but didn’t really have an impressive time in the series overall.

Moreover, Iyer has faced some issues against pace. In fact, out of his four outings in the series, he fell to fast bowling thrice. If he has to take the flight to Australia later this year, then Iyer really needs to negate this glitch.

The tracks in Australia would favour the pacers and if the issue persists then it would be pretty tough for him to find a place for himself.

Vintage Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Barring the first game, Bhuvneshwar Kumar was on song in this series. The right-arm bowler scalped 6 wickets in four matches and was adjudged Player of the Series for his performance.

The right-handed bowler troubled the South African batters with his line and length thoroughly and bowled some brilliant economical spells that eventually created pressure on them.

Mumbai is taking on Uttar Pradesh in the semi-final of the ongoing Ranji Trophy season and are in the driver’s set to progress through to the finale. In the second innings, Mumbai's 20-year-old opener, Yashasvi Jaiswal, took over 50 deliveries to score his first run on Thursday. The left-hander got off the mark in his 54th delivery, following which he received cheers from the dressing room as well as from his teammates. With a chuckle, Jaiswal raised his bat to acknowledge the applause.

Mumbai captain Prithvi Shaw, who was blazing along at other end, shared a hilarious meme at the end of the day’s play. Shaw shared this meme on his Instagram story where he made fun of Jaiswal’s score and compared it with his. When it was shared, Shaw was on 60 off 64 deliveries while Jaiswal had not scored a single run after having played 50 balls.

Here’s the story:

Both Jaiswal and Shaw have been in fine form and have shown their ability in the recently concluded Indian Premier League this season. Jaiswal scored 255 runs in 10 innings for the Rajasthan Royals and played a number of crucial knocks at the top of the order.

As far as this ongoing semi-final is concerned, Mumbai have dominated Uttar Pradesh on Day 3 of the Ranji Trophy semi-finals at Bengaluru's Just Cricket Academy Ground. At the end of day's play, the Shaw-led side managed to take a 346-run lead.

Jaiswal (35*) is at the crease along with Arman Jaffer (32*). Captain Prithvi Shaw was in fine form but he had to head back to the pavilion after scoring 64 runs from 71 deliveries. Earlier in the day, Mumbai bowlers Tushar Deshpande, Mohit Avasthi and Tanush Kotian bagged three wickets each while seasoned pacer Dhawal Kulkarni picked up a solitary wicket to bundle UP for 180.

India opener Ishan Kishan had a memorable outing in the third T20I against South Africa in Vizag, scoring 54 runs off 35 balls while also forging a 97-run stand for the first wicket with Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Kishan’s fifty would later on become a match-winning one, with Yuzvendra Chahal and Harshal Patel helping the hosts complete a 48-run win to stay alive with two games to play. The T20I series remain in favour of the Proteas, who lead 2-1.

However, the match witnessed drama on the field, as it was marred by a heated exchange between Ishan Kishan and South Africa’s Tabraiz Shamsi. In the ninth over of the Indian innings, Gaikwad took a single to reach his maiden T20I fifty. With Kishan on strike the next ball, the left-handed batter slog swept an overpitched ball from Shamsi to slam a six over the midwicket region.

The next ball was a full toss from Shamsi, which Kishan then tried to switch hit, but hit that straight to the backward point fielder, eventually not getting a single run off that ball. Kishan then went down the knee ruing his missed chance, and around that time, the camera then panned towards the two, where Shamsi (not seen by his face on camera), can be seen having a verbal altercation with Kishan.

Kishan did not hold back and replied another few words to Shamsi, although it’s not clear what the conversation was about.

Kishan eventually got to his fifty in 31 balls, amassing five fours and two sixes in the process.

The caravan now moves onto Rajkot, where the two teams play the fourth T20I on Friday, before fifth and the final T20I in Bengaluru on 19 June.

India finally won a match in the ongoing five-match T20I series against South Africa. The hosts thumped the Proteas by 48 runs after bowling them out for 131 while chasing 180.

Batting first, openers Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad were on a roll after both the batters struck individual fifties to help India put 179/5 in 20 overs on the board.

Later, bowlers especially Yuzvendra Chahal and Harshal Patel rattled the Proteas batting line up. While Chahal scalped a three-fer, Harshal returned with a four wicket haul.

With the win, Rishabh Pant and Co kept themselves alive in the five-match series, with the series currently 2-1 in favour of the Proteas. India must win the fourth T20I on Friday to have any chance of winning the series.

Here's how Twitterati reacted to India's win:

Captain Rishabh Pant lauded the side's efforts. "The execution was spot-on from the bowlers and the batters. We were 15 runs short, but we weren't thinking about that. Bowlers did a fantastic job for us," Pant said at the post-match presentation.

India finally clinched a win against South Africa in the five-match series after beating the visitors by 48 runs in Visakhapatnam. The home side scored 179/5 in 20 overs after batting first and then bundled out South Africa for 131 to clinch the win.

India stand-in captain Rishabh Pant hailed the bowlers for their efforts.

"The execution was spot-on from the bowlers and the batters. We were 15 runs short, but we weren't thinking about that. Bowlers did a fantastic job for us. In India, spinners play a big role and there is pressure on them, when they come off nicely then matches like this happen. When you get a good start, it's difficult for a new batter to come in and go big straightaway. We lost too many wickets. We'll look to improve in the next match. We have to make sure that we finish the game with a bigger margin," he said.

Yuzvendra Chahal was back in form for India after he returned with a three-fer while Harshal Patel was the pick of the bowlers as he bagged four wickets. Earlier, openers Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad chipped in with individual fifties.

India are still alive in the series after this win but trail 1-2.

Day 3 report: Joe Root and Ollie Pope made centuries Sunday to help England move to 473-5 and within sight of New Zealand's vast first-innings total of 553 on Day 3 of a second Test that has turned into a batter's paradise at Trent Bridge.

Root, currently the world's most in-form batter in Test cricket, was still there at stumps on 163 not out to give England hope of coming out of the first innings with an unlikely lead.

While Root is used to compiling centuries — this was his fourth in his last five Test matches and the 27th of his career — Pope reached three figures for just the second time in four years in the England team and the first at home.

Pope's 145 beat his previous best score, the 135 not out against South Africa in January 2020, and justified the decision of England's new leadership to promote him to No. 3 for this international summer.

Alex Lees (67) and Ben Stokes (46) chipped in with significant knocks and Ben Foakes was with Root on 24 not out at the close, with England trailing by 80.

England leads the three-match series 1-0 after a five-wicket win in the first test at Lord’s last week.

Backing that up with a win in Nottingham looked beyond the hosts when Daryl Mitchell's 190 led the New Zealanders to their biggest test score in England, but all results are now possible with two days remaining.

England motored along at a fierce rate, scoring 383 in 88 overs, with Root making his quickest century so far — in 116 balls.

A sixth double hundred looks on for Root after the latest impeccable knock from a player in the form of his life. It was his second century in as many tests since giving up the captaincy, his fifth in his last nine innings on home soil, and his 10th since the start of 2021.

He now sits level with contemporaries Steve Smith and Virat Kohli on 27 centuries and there is a growing feeling that he could be the one to leave the pack behind.

“We’re witnessing something special," former England captain Michael Vaughan told the BBC. “I’ve known Joe for years and I really do believe he’s England’s greatest player.”

England had started the day on 90-1, and Lees set the tone from the third ball of the morning, pounding Tim Southee (0-119) through cover point for four. The left-hander was good value for his first England fifty, opening up the off side well to draw the seamers back into his pads. Lees had also left the ball well but his judgment momentarily wavered when he wafted at Matt Henry's wide delivery and was caught behind.

Pope started less assertively, twice nicking Trent Boult (3-89) in front of the slips in a morning session that saw him add a gentle 33 in two hours as Lees, then Root, took the driving seat.

Pope stepped things up a notch after lunch, taking just 10 balls to move from 84 to his long-awaited hundred. A set of four overthrows helped but there were also three boundaries clean off the middle of the bat as he found his timing.

Pope made his only other century 34 innings and 2 1/2 years ago in Port Elizabeth, and his ecstatic celebrations told their own story. Root sprinted 40 meters to join in.

England scored 136 in a wicketless afternoon session, Pope adding an uppercut six off Henry to a repertoire of flashy cross-bat strokes.

Improbably, the tempo picked up again after tea. Boult struck twice with the second new ball, Pope top-edging a pull to end a memorable stay and Jonny Bairstow caught behind off one that grazed the glove.

England was still more than 200 adrift when Stokes stepped out, but he started in fifth gear and never retreated. He flayed 46 in 33 balls, with two sixes and six fours in a furious onslaught which was too fast for some observers. His exuberance proved his undoing, holing out off his third ball from spinner Michael Bracewell, who claimed his first test wicket on debut.

Root moved serenely past the 150 mark, taking the deficit into double figures at the same time, with Ben Foakes supporting well after Will Young’s fumble reprieved him on nine.

India and South Africa will now be locking horns with each other in the second T20I of the five-match series. The visitors rode on a spectacular batting from David Miller and Rassie van der Dussen to clinch a win by 7 wickets in the first encounter while chasing down a target of 212 runs.

The home side will now look to bounce back in the second game while the Proteas will try to stretch the lead.

The Indian pace attack is led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the absence of premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah, but the Indian pacers were responsible for leaking runs as Miller and van der Dussen made short work of the chase, that would have seemed improbable at once.

While Ishan Kishan (76) roared back to form and Hardik Pandya smashed a 12-ball 31, India would hope for an improved effort from their bowlers come Sunday.

David Miller smashed 64 not out off 31 balls to lead South Africa to a seven-wicket win over India in the first Twenty20 on Thursday.

Rassie van der Dussen also hit an unbeaten 75 off 46 deliveries as the duo put on 131 in 63 balls at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Earlier, India totaled 211-4, its highest score at the venue, thanks to Ishan Kishan’s 76.

Kishan put on 57 for the first wicket with Ruturaj Gaikwad (23) and then shared a stand of 80 with Shreyas Iyer (36).

Kishan struck 11 fours and three sixes, regaining form after a poor IPL season, while Rishabh Pant made 29 and Hardik Pandya 31 not out.

Quinton de Kock (22) and Dwaine Pretorius (29) then laid the groundwork in South Africa's reply with big hitting in the powerplay overs.

Pretorius thumped four sixes in his 13-ball stay, including three off Pandya in the fifth over, before he was bowled by Harshal Patel.

India's spinners proved expensive with Axar Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal giving away a combined 66 runs in 6.1 overs.

Miller and Van der Dussen produced a flurry of runs, carting the bowlers to all parts of the ground.

Their first 50 partnership came off 32 balls and there was further acceleration with the next 50 arriving off 20 balls.

Miller cracked four fours and five sixes while Van der Dussen hit seven fours and five sixes as South Africa completed its highest successful chase in T20 cricket. It also ended India’s winning 12- match streak.

The second match in the five-game series is in Cuttack on Sunday.

Here are some of the key statistics from the first T20I:

— This is South Africa’s highest ever chase in a men’s T20I game, eclipsing the 206-run target against West Indies in the opening game of the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup.

— India suffered their first defeat in T20Is since their loss at the hands of New Zealand in the group stage of the T20 World Cup. Since then, they had won 12 T20Is in a row.

— India have now lost their last six consecutive matches against South Africa. These include two Tests, three ODIs and a T20I.

— David Miller becomes only the second batter to collect 100 boundaries or more in death overs in T20Is. He has 101 boundaries in death overs to his name, three less than MS Dhoni.

— The unbroken 131-run stand between David Miller and Rassie van der Dussen is now the highest partnership in a T20I against India in India, eclipsing the 130-run stand between England’s Jos Buttler and David Malan in 2021.
