Former Indian all-rounder Kapil Dev recorded a special day in his career on 30 January, 1994, when he equalled Sir Richard Hadlee’s world record of 431 Test wickets in Bangalore.

The Indian cricketer achieved this feat during his 130th Test match, which was against Sri Lanka. India scored 541 runs in the first innings, and dismissed Sri Lanka for 231, leading to a follow-on by the team. Sri Lanka displayed a mediocre performance in the second innings.

Kapil Dev was chasing Richard Hadlee’s record of the highest number of Test wickets in history. Kapil Dev dismissed Sri Lankan batsman Don Anurasiri, with Azharuddin taking the catch. The crowd roared as Kapil Dev equalled Hadlee's figure of 431 Test wickets.

The Test was won by India with an innings and 95 runs. Captain Azharuddin was declared man of the match but he handed over his award to Kapil Dev. The feat was even more momentous as it was achieved on Martyrs’ Day.

Later on, in the third Test at Ahmedabad, Kapil Dev dismissed Sri Lankan cricketer Hashan Tilkaratne with Sanjay Majrekar taking the catch at forward short-leg. Kapil Dev took the number one spot that day, 8 February, 1994, surpassing Richard Hadlee’s record and became the first cricketer to have snared 432 test wickets.

India celebrated Kapil Dev’s monumental record by releasing 432 balloons and through a one-minute standing ovation.

Sir Richard Hadlee had also congratulated Kapil Dev for his marvelous performance and said that it was a very special moment for world cricket.

Sir Richard Hadlee made a world record of 431 wickets in 1990, during the first Test against India at Christchurch. He achieved this milestone in 86 Tests while Kapil Dev got to 432 wickets in his 130th Test.

All-rounder Kapil Dev was a vital cog in the Indian cricket team and during his career, his prime contribution was leading India to victory in the 1983 World Cup final against West Indies.

So, the U19 World Cup 2022 semi-finals are set! England vs Afghanistan on 1 February, and India vs Australia on 2 February. That's all for now, but we'll be returning with LIVE coverage for India's semi-final. Until then, goodbye and good night!

00:51 (IST)

Yash Dhull, India captain: Our team combination has been very good and the boys are gelling well. Whenever someone is down, we all get together to bring them up. It is a lifetime experience here. The team is improving day by day. Laxman sir giving his experience gives us a lot of help in the middle. We will look at the semis on the day of the match depending on how the wicket is.

00:48 (IST)

Rakibul Hasan, Bangladesh captain: The toss decided the match today. The wicket was very soft and their bowlers took advantage and bowled well. We played some shots which we shouldn't have played. Had we taken 10-15 overs, we could have done better. As a batting and bowling unit we did well. It is hard but we are looking forward.

00:44 (IST)

Ravi Kumar is the Player of the Match for his figures of 3/14 (7 overs)

00:41 (IST)

After 30.5 overs, India 117/5 (Yash 20, Kaushal 11)

Sealed it with a six! Rakibul Hasan starts with four dots to Kushal, but in the fifth, Kaushal goes all guns blazing and lofts it over long-on to finish proceedings. India win by five wickets, and setup a semi-final against Australia on 2 February.

00:37 (IST)

SIX! Kaushal Tambe finishes it off in some fashion and sends India to the semi-finals! Sealed it with a maximum

00:27 (IST)

After 28 overs, India 107/5

Seven runs come off the over bowled by Ripon. He's been good in terms of taking wickets but he's conceded three wides this over alone.

00:15 (IST)

After 26 overs, India 98/5 (Yash 14, Kaushal 1)

Ripon Mondol continues to be effective for Bangladesh, picking up the wicket of Raj Bawa. India have lost half their side now, but they are just 14 runs away from reaching the semis. Kaushal Tambe is the new batter.

00:13 (IST)

OUT! Raj Bawa has to depart, caught by the wicket-keeper Md Fahim. Ripon Mondol with the wicket again.

00:07 (IST)

After 24 overs, India 83/4 (Yash 0, Raj 0)

Ripon Mondol, with two wickets to his name continues. He begins with a wide to Siddarth Yadav, and follows that with a dot ball. However, another setback for India as Siddarth Yadav becomes Ripon's latest victim. He's caught by Iftakher at extra cover, and this brings Raj Bawa to the crease.

00:03 (IST)

OUT! Third wicket for Ripon, as Siddarth departs. Caught by Iftakher at extra cover, as Siddarth slaps this one towards that region in order to find the boundary. Instead, he finds the fielder.
Siddarth Yadav c Iftakher Hossain b Ripon Mondol

23:57 (IST)

After 22 overs, India 80/3 (Yash 0, Siddarth 5)

Ripon Mondol with another wicket, that of Shaik Rasheed. Good length outside off, Rashid gets forward, only to get an outside edge onto the keeper. Siddarth Yadav is the new batter

23:50 (IST)

OUT! Edged and caught by the keeper as Rasheed departs. Ripon strikes, and he's now on a hat-trick. Shaik Rasheed c Md Fahim b Ripon Mondol 26

23:48 (IST)

After 21 overs, India 75/2 (Yash 0, Rasheed 26)

Ripon Mondol continues. Angkrish Raghuvanshi was looking in fine touch, even scoring two fours before finding Nabil at point in the last ball of the over. But, is it too late for Bangladesh? India need just 37 runs, with as many as 29 overs still in hand. Time is running out for Bangladeshis to put even more pressure on India.

23:45 (IST)

OUT! Angkrish Raghuvanshi misrdeads this short ball, cuts it to the fielder at cover point. Angkrish Raghuvanshi c Prantik Nawrose Nabil b Mondol 44

23:00 (IST)

After 10 overs, India 28/1 (Rasheed 5, Raghuvanshi 20)

Hasan Sakib continues. Short and wide, Angkrish cuts it off the back foot towards the point boundary fence. Seven runs off the 10th over, and that's the end of the first powerplay.

22:39 (IST)

After 6 overs, India 17/1 (Angkrish 12, Rasheed 3)

Hasan Sakib continues. Raghuvanshi with a couple of runs in the third ball, and he almost miscues this one towards mid-on. The fielder there attempted a dive but just fell short of a catch. Raghuvanshi finishes the over with a superb boundary, dispatching it in front of square.

22:29 (IST)

After 4 overs, India 5/1 (Raghuvanshi 5, Rasheed 0)

Hasan Sakib continues. Angkrish brings India's first boundary with a well-timed punch towards wide of backward point for a four. Just the boundary off the over.

22:21 (IST)

After 3 overs, India 1/1 (Angkrish 1, Rasheed 0)

Early setback for India as Harnoor Singh (0) departs. He's been edged and caught by the keeper off Hasan Sakib's ball. This has brought Shaik Rasheed in at number three. Angkrish is off the mark with a single, that also gets India's scoreboard up and running. There seems to be an issue with the bowlers' landing area, and there's a slight delay in resumption of play. Just a few moments later, Ashiqur is good to go and play resumes.

22:11 (IST)

OUT! Edged and gone! Harnoor Singh departs for a duck. Back of a length outside off from Hasan Sakib, and Harnoor gets an outside edge and onto the keeper. Harnoor Singh c Md Fahim b Tanzim Hasan Sakib 0

21:23 (IST)

After 35 overs, Bangladesh 105/7 ((Meherob 30, Zaman 14)

21:12 (IST)

After 32 overs, Bangladesh 95/7 (Ashiqur 8, Meherob 29)

Kaushal Tambe is into the attack again. Meherob miscues the reverse sweep, but manages to just clear the infield for a couple of runs. Siddarth Yadav runs from backward point, and despite his diving effort, he is well away from catching the ball. Meherob, though, finds three boundaries in the over. Expensive one with 14 runs coming off it but Bangladesh will welcome this.

Bangladesh are seven down. Aich Mollah's terrible mistake costs his wicket. He's run-out at the bowler's end by Kaushal Tambe. Meherob, who was batting, punched towards extra cover and Aich wanted a run, but Meherob wasn't interested. Looking to make his way back, Aich falls well short of safety and a good throw from Yash to the bowler, and the bowler does the rest.

In the aftermath of twin series’ losses in South Africa, change was anticipated. And so, when rumours abounded on Thursday afternoon for India’s team selection for the upcoming white-ball series against West Indies, it was only a matter of seeing how far the axe would fall.

Let’s be honest here. Indian cricket is at the crossroads across formats, and in a very weird manner. In Test cricket, whether playing home or away, the team management has a clear roadmap. What they don’t have are the personnel, given the middle-order rebuild required, which simultaneously is set to usher in a transition in the longer format.

In ODIs, the personnel are there. There are in-form senior players around, plus the Indian Premier League (IPL) throws up enough names every season that two Indian teams could together participate — and challenge even — in an ICC tournament. What they don’t have is a roadmap — who are the three opening batsmen, what is the middle order going to look like eventually, who is the bowling all-rounder and what is the bowling combination going to be? All of this needs to be decided with the 2023 ODI World Cup starting to be visible on the horizon.

Then, there is T20 cricket. In many ways, the problems herein are a microcosm of the ones prevalent in ODIs. Only, they are more acute given the swift nature of this shortest format. Again, there are too many names to pick from — just too many. And the lack of a proper selection and team balance thereafter is even more palpable. Further, there is a T20 World Cup fast approaching. Eight and a half months to be precise!

While the Test selection will surely raise some eyebrows later in February, it is time to ponder if the wise men have hit the reset button in white-ball cricket.

ODIs – Hint of a change, but is it enough to get the World Cup blueprint going?

Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ravichandran Ashwin — perhaps these were the two most obvious names to be axed after the South African drubbing. From the two ODIs in Paarl, it was pretty evident that Ashwin’s race in 50-over cricket is run. He might still have something to offer in T20 cricket, down to IPL performances and/or strategies formulated by skipper Rohit Sharma, but the door should now be shut on his ODI career. India simply needs to find an alternative.

Ravindra Jadeja is the obvious spin all-rounder but he is out injured. In comes Washington Sundar and he should slot in straight with Shardul Thakur in the all-rounder department. With Deepak Chahar, this is a triple-whammy of bowling all-rounders now and if Hardik Pandya doesn’t return to bowling fitness, this is the obvious area where India must invest in. Sundar/Jadeja, Thakur and Chahar – that leaves space for another two bowlers atleast.

Ravi Bishnoi finished as the leading wicket-taker in the 2020 edition of the ICC U-19 World Cup. Image credit: Twitter/@BCCI

One is obviously a leg spinner. Ravi Bishnoi’s stock continues to rise while it remains to be seen what form Kuldeep Yadav returns in. Both will find it difficult to displace Yuzvendra Chahal from the starting eleven. Mind you, there is just no way India will return to the two-leggies theory anytime soon.

This brings us to the other pacer. Chahar’s heroics with both bat and ball have put Bhuvi out of business. This decision was long pending. Kumar is no longer the bowler he once was — early breakthroughs have dried up, pace keeps dropping, he is always building form and fitness, and goes missing in crunch situations/tournaments. India simply has to move on and build around Jasprit Bumrah for the next World Cup. Resting Bumrah allows Avesh Khan much needed exposure, if he gets to play ahead of Mohammed Siraj or Prasidh Krishna.

In the batting department, Deepak Hooda’s inclusion is the headline grabber. On the one hand, it outlines why Venkatesh Iyer has been cruelly left out after only one outing. Clearly, the selectors want a batting all-rounder in there, a sixth bowling option. With the ODI World Cup at home, it might as well be a spin bowler than a medium pacer. On the other hand, will Hooda even get the chance to showcase his wares?

That’s because the batting department is packed to full strength. Rohit Sharma’s return and not resting Virat Kohli means the onus will again be on the top-order. Assuming Ruturaj Gaikwad is only a back-up opening option, that leaves five batsmen — Hooda, KL Rahul*, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Suryakumar Yadav — vying for three/four spots depending on the team balance.

(*Rahul will only be available from second ODI onwards.)

T20Is – The more things change, the more they stay the same

Like Bumrah, Kohli should have been rested for at least one series. He clearly needs it after all the captaincy drama, but it is hard to envisage him and the selectors talking at this point. Even so, in the better scheme of things, it would have freed up a space and allowed for proper experimentation. Instead, with Kohli available for both series, the selectors have had to compensate by leaving out Gaikwad from the T20s.

It is particularly unhelpful because there is a key differentiation between India’s ODI and T20I troubles — lack of explosiveness up top. In the shortest format, accumulation simply doesn’t work. And this is where they really need to get around a proper, attacking batting line-up, one that would match any of the IPL teams. It is for this purpose Rohit Sharma has been brought in as captain. Now, he needs to get to work.

It can be concluded herein that T20I changes need to be implemented more in mentality than personnel. The problem stays the same though. Rohit, Rahul and Kohli, and thereafter five names vying for three, maybe four, spots. Ishan Kishan and Venkatesh Iyer are in the mix here too.

With Rohit and Kohli batting as accumulators, will Rahul’s strike-rate become an issue? Will he shed the cautious approach he has shown previously in the IPL and attack from ball one? Unless the team management lays down the law to attack and simply attack, it is tough to see what changes have been really made.

Stand -in captain KL Rahul would want to finish the series with a win. AP

In the bowling department, Axar Patel provides the left-hand spin element in place of Kuldeep Yadav. Will Rohit prefer Bishnoi ahead of Chahal atleast in T20s? Bhuvi Kumar still finds a place herein, so again the selectors have balanced their decision to drop him from ODIs. Where does this leave Avesh Khan, or even Harshal Patel? With Siraj, Chahar and Thakur present as well, that’s six pacers vying for three spots.

In today’s Covid-reality, picking a bulging squad is par-for-course. However, the selectors and the team management need to figure out a pecking order for selection. And this needs to vary going from ODIs to T20Is. India’s long-standing issue with white-ball cricket has been using a similar template in both formats. It does not work, pure and simple.

They have tried to enforce a change in mentality without changing personnel, and atleast on paper, it seems to be the same story this time around as well. Until that aspect changes for the Men in Blue, things will stay the same despite the selectors’ intent to reset plans.

Test matches are often said to be great for cricketers and boring for viewers. However, on 26 January, 1993, one of the most thrilling Test matches of all time was played between West Indies and Australia in Adelaide. The game, which left viewers hanging by the edge of their seats, was won by West Indies by just one run.

The sensational game helped the West Indies maintain their 13-year unbeaten run of winning Test series. The game was lost by the Aussies on the occasion of Australia Day.

The match began with West Indies putting up 252 runs in their first innings, with Brian Lara becoming the top scorer with 52 off 76. When it was Australia’s turn with the bat, the West Indies put up a spirited defence, led by Curtly Ambrose, who swiped six wickets in the innings. Australia was restricted for a total of 213 runs, giving West Indies a slim lead.

However, despite a stunning 72 off 106 balls by captain Richie Richardson, the team failed to capitalise on the lead and was bowled out for 146 runs.

Australian bowler Tim May, who was playing his first match in four years, managed to become a star overnight with his five-wicket haul in just 6.5 overs.

Australia had to score 186 runs in the final innings of the Test. With bowlers like Ambrose and Courtney Walsh, the West Indies soon managed to scalp seven wickets, leaving the Aussies teetering at 74/7.

However, the tables turned again, with Justin Langer’s scintillating knock of 54 runs, which led to the Aussies closing in on the target. With Australia at 144/9, the match was poised to go either way.

With one wicket remaining, Australia reached 184. At that moment, most people believed that the match would go their way. Strains of Waltzing Matilda began playing in anticipation of the team’s victory.

However, at the final moment, Craig McDermott was given out while fending a bouncer from Walsh. The decision, which is still seen as controversial led to West Indies winning the match by just one run.

The thrilling Test match still counts as one of the best matches in the history of cricket. Australia ended West Indies' decade and a half winning streak in Test series in 1995.

Harnoor Singh and Angkrish Raghuvanshi's show with the bat was backed up by a dominant bowling performance as India defeated Ireland by 174 runs in Group B of the ongoing ICC U19 World Cup in Trinidad at the Brian Lara Stadium on Wednesday.

With this win, India have now registered victories in their opening two matches and qualify for the Super League quarter-finals. The colts will lock horns against Uganda in their final group stage game on Saturday.

Earlier, Harnoor Singh and Angkrish Raghuvanshi played knocks of 88 and 79 respectively as India posted in the allotted fifty overs. Twitter @BCCI

India were playing with a depleted playing XI as six players tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the match, but this was no problem for the side as they registered a comprehensive win.

Chasing 308, Ireland got off to the worst start possible as Liam Doherty (7) and Jack Dickson (0) lost their wickets. Ravi Kumar dismissed Doherty while Rajvardhan Hangargekar got the better of Dickson. Ireland's troubles increased when David Vincent (8) was sent back to the pavilion via a run-out in the seventh over of the innings, reducing them to 17/3.

Ireland kept on losing wickets at regular intervals, and in the end, India registered a comprehensive 174-run win. Nathan McGuire and Scott MacBeth put on a brave show for Ireland as the duo put on 39 runs for the seventh wicket, but in the end, it did not prove enough.

Earlier, Harnoor Singh and Angkrish Raghuvanshi played knocks of 88 and 79 respectively as India posted in the allotted fifty overs. Sent into bat, the colts got off to a brilliant start with the bat as openers Harnoor Singh and Angkrish Raghuvanshi put on 164 runs for the first wicket, which saw both batters going past their fifty-run mark. Ireland finally got the breakthrough in the 26th over as Jamie Forbes dismissed Raghuvanshi (79).

Harnoor Singh (88) also missed out on a century as he was sent back to the pavilion by Matthew Humphreys in the 35th over and India was reduced to 195/2. Stand-in skipper Nishant Sindhu (36), Rajvardhan Hangargekar (39*), and Raj Bawa (42) also chipped in with valuable knocks to help India post a score of more than the 300-run mark.

Brief Scores: India 307/5 (Harnoor Singh 88, Angkrish Raghuvanshi 79; Muzamil Sherzad 3-79); Ireland 133 all out (Scott MacBeth 32, Joshua Cox 28; Kaushal Tambe 2-8).

That's about it from us tonight. India were missing Yash Dhull and few other players due to COVID-19, but under Nishant Sindhu, they fought hard to register a mammoth win over Ireland to advance to the Super League quarter-finals. The Boys in Blue will next face Uganda in their final group game on Saturday. Until then, it's goodbye and good night!

01:28 (IST)

Nishant Sindhu, India captain: I'm really happy with the win. It was great to see everyone sticking to their roles and plans. We had to focus early, had to keep those things (COVID19 cases in the camp) out of the mind and the boys responded well.

01:27 (IST)

Tim Tector, Ireland captain: Have to give credit to India. They came out with the bat and put pressure on us straightaway. We didn't bowl particularly well although we did pull things back well later on. We were happy to restrict them to 307, because it was a good surface. Was always going to be a challenge for us. Losing early wickets put us on the back foot. Maybe we could have been more proactive.

India were put into bat after South Africa skipper George Van Heerden won the toss and chose to field. Toss was delayed due to rain in Guyana, but still witnessed a full day’s play without overs being reduced.

Toss update: Zimbabwe skipper Craig Ervine won the toss and elected to bat against Sri Lanka in a bid to keep their one-day international series alive on Tuesday.

The tourists, who lost the first of the three matches despite scoring 296 while batting first, come in unchanged at the Pallekele International Stadium in Kandy.

"The guys did really well in the last game to set up a good platform and hopefully they can do the same again," Ervine said at the toss.

Sri Lanka, led by Dasun Shanaka, have made one change from their five-wicket win on Sunday with Dushmantha Chameera returning for injured Chamika Gunasekara.

"We're very confident on the run chase after the last game," Shanaka said on batting second.

"The start however is crucial, we need to make sure our fielding is up to the mark, and we need to take our catches as well. The powerplay is going to be very important."

India take on South Africa in the 1st ODI at the Boland Park in Paarl.

India started off the tour on a positive note beating South Africa in their fortress Centurion in the first Test but then lost their way as the Proteas bounced back strongly to clinch the Test series 2-1.

File image of KL Rahul. AP

Virat Kohli resigned as Test captain as well after the loss. He had earlier stepped down at the T20 captain before being removed as the ODI captain.

Rohit Sharma was named the new white-ball skipper. The ODI series against South Africa was supposed to be his first series in charge but he will miss out due to hamstring injury which has bothered him for a while. KL Rahul will lead the side while Jasprit Bumrah will be his deputy.

Both India and South Africa will look to build for the 2023 World Cup. India's white-ball transition will begin with the South Africa series where a nearly full strength squad will take part.

The focus will be on Kohli the batter as he takes the field as non captain for the first time in more than five years. Venkatesh Iyer will audition for the seam bowling all-rounders' spot in absence of Hardik Pandya who is dropped.

Shikhar Dhawan and Ruturaj Gaikwad will compete for the opening spot as KL Rahul has confirmed that he will open the batting in absence of Rohit Sharma.

Rahul indicated that the pitch at Boland Park might offer little bit of spin so India might go in with a three pacer-two spinner strategy with Venkatesh Iyer being the sixth bowling option.

India would look to improve their bowling as they have the third-worst bowling average since 2019 World Cup. Their Powerplay bowling needs vast improvement as well.

South Africa, on the other hand, will be looking to carry forward the momentum after the Test series win. Temba Bavuma is back to leading the ODI side after missing the last three with a thumb injury. Lungi Ngidi will lead the pace department while Tabraiz Shamsi will lead the spin department. Their batting is their main strength and they look a formidable unit.

Two strong teams looking to make a statement. We are in for a cracker in Paarl.

Here are all the details about the first ODI between South Africa and India.

When will the first ODI between South Africa and India take place?

The first ODI between India and South Africa will take place on 19 January 2022.

What is the venue for the South Africa-India match?

The match will take place at Bolant Park, Paarl

When will the match start?

The match will begin at 2 pm IST. The toss will take place at 1.30 pm IST.

Which TV channels will broadcast India vs South Africa match?

The match will be telecast on Star Sports Network. The live streaming of the match will also be available on Disney + Hotstar. You can also browse Firstpost.com for live updates and over-by-over commentary.
