Taunton: Senior India spinner Poonam Yadav, who endured a dry spell in the previous series against South Africa, says she has learnt to vary her pace that helped her snare two wickets in the second ODI against England.

England beat India by five wickets in the second women's ODI to take a 2-0 series-clinching lead here on Wednesday.

Yadav was the pick of the bowlers for the visitors as she registered the figures of 2/63.

The wickets of captain Heather Knight and wicketkeeper Amy Jones were the 29-year-old's first since November 2019.

In the home series against South Africa earlier this year she had failed to strike even once in four matches.

"I have worked on my field placements and just my general approach. Players were playing me off the back foot, what matters is the pace and how the wicket is acting," Yadav, said during the post-match virtual press conference.

"I worked on varying my pace and I had time between these two series to work that out.

"I got a wicket after a long time. For any bowler, it matters to get among the wickets and contribute to the team and complete the spell. I was a little expensive today, I could have done better," she added.

Trailing the series 0-1, India were all out for 221 as England pacer Kate Cross took a five-wicket haul (5/34.) Skipper Mithali Raj (59) and Shafali Verma (44) provided valuable contributions for the tourists.

In reply, Sophia Dunkley (73 not out) and Katherine Brunt (33 not out) shared 92 runs for the unbroken sixth wicket to chase down the target.

India put up a much improved show in the second ODI compared to the series opener earlier this week, but suffered a batting collapse once again.

"We lost wickets but still managed a decent total. We could have restricted them. Our bowlers did well too but we could have restricted them a little more. Our fielding was better this time.

"We are seeing collapses often, but I think they'll do better going forward," Yadav said.

Yadav felt that despite the loss, the Indian team's body language had improved compared to the previous outing.

"It was a bad day for the bowlers in the first ODI, but today we fought till the end and even though we lost, our body language was so better. Hopefully, we'll take that momentum forward and definitely register wins the coming matches," she said.

With the ODI World Cup in New Zealand scheduled to be played next year, Yadav said, We're experimenting with bowling plans and field positions for all bowlers in the matches we get now. We tried today too and some of those plans worked for us. This will be very important as we get closer to the World Cup."

Karachi: Former Pakistan skipper Younis Khan has claimed that the 2009 players revolt against him had its roots in captaincy ambitions of seniors like Shahid Afridi.

Younis claimed that the revolt was not carried out because the players were unhappy with his captaincy style or strong attitude.

"If the players had problems with me they could have spoken to me. They claimed that they didn't want me removed as captain but just wanted the cricket board to speak to me to change my attitude," Younis told a TV channel.

"Then how is it that when the player (s) met with the then PCB Chairman, Ejaz Butt one senior player, apparently Afridi demanded the captain be changed. To me it was about captaincy ambitions," said highest Test run getter for Pakistan.

Younis also confirmed that a player (said to be Umar Akmal) had come to his room to ask for the Holy Quran and took it saying he wanted it because some players wanted to recite some Sarah's before an important match.

The former captain said later the same Holy Quran was used to ask the players to take oath on it that they would not reveal anything that was discussed at the revolting players meeting in South Africa during the Champions Trophy.

Ironically after Younis resigned in late 2009, it was Misbah-ul-haq and Afridi who captained Pakistan in red and white ball cricket.

Younis Khan has been recently appointed Pakistan batting coach. AP

Younis said he had spent the last four years of his career with Pakistan remaining in his room all the time and just focussing on his cricket.

He was also asked about the infamous incident when in 2016 he abruptly announced his retirement from ODIs on the day before a match against England.

"It was not abrupt at all. I had made a decision beforehand I would retire from ODIs as I was not selected in the ODI eleven for the last two years.

"On the night before the match chief selector, Haroon Rasheed called me and I told him I was thinking about retirement from ODIs and he turned around and told me rudely that it was up to me but he had got me selected for the series against England and I (Younis) should just listen to the team management and play as they wanted.

"I was very upset with his tone and that is why I announced my retirement the next morning."

Sydney:  Australia coach Justin Langer has taken on board negative feedback of his leadership style, confronting the issues head-on at a team meeting ahead of their West Indies tour, skipper Aaron Finch said Thursday.

Langer came under the microscope after Australia's 2-1 Test series defeat to India in January, when reports surfaced about discontent over his "headmaster-like" style of leadership and shifting moods.

Finch said Langer, who is taking charge in the West Indies for the first time since then, raised the issue at a recent pre-departure meeting.

"The ability of JL (Langer) to address some issues that came up... that was brilliant for him to tackle them head-on and I suppose put his side of the story, put his spin on it," Finch said via Zoom from St Lucia.

File image of Justin Langer. Twitter/ @cricketcomau

"It showed the quality of the man he is, the things that he's working on.

"We're all behind him 100 percent," he added. "The way he's coached Australia in the last couple of years has been fantastic, we've had some really good success as well.

"No doubt it was quite confronting for him at the time (the discontent surfaced), but it was very positive from our point of view."

Langer in February admitted he had been "grumpy and intense since I was 16 years old", but that hearing criticism of him through the media was hard to take.

"That's the killer. I've talked for years about honest conversations and the worst part about it all for me was it came out two weeks after the Test match," he said.

Finch suggested the high-pressure situation last summer and the taxing nature of the bio-secure bubbles contributed to Langer's tension.

"There was a combination of a few things," he said. "On the back a lot of bubbles as well, he could have used his assistants a little bit better and delegated a bit more.

"But there was nothing ground-breaking -- there's stuff that every player and every coach would reflect on themself. He's no different.

"He's done a fantastic job. The way he confronted that and the way it was received by the players was outstanding."

Australia arrived in the West Indies this week for five Twenty20s in St Lucia from July 10, followed by three one-dayers in Barbados.

They are missing some of their top names, including David Warner, Pat Cummins and Glenn Maxwell, who all opted out with fatigue after spending considerable time in bio-secure bubbles over the past few months.

Steve Smith is also absent as he struggles with an elbow injury.

Sydney: Cricket Australia is planning on big crowds for the Ashes series against England later this year, with venues being sold to full capacity despite ongoing concerns about COVID-19.

Chief executive Nick Hockley said tickets would go on sale Monday with all stadiums sold to their limit except the 100,000-seat Melbourne Cricket Ground which will have an initial capacity of 85 percent.

"The Ashes rivalry is one of the biggest in world sport, and we hope that conditions will allow as many fans as possible to attend," Hockley said in a statement late Wednesday.

Representational image. Image credit: Twitter/@CricketAus

"In the event that capacities are reduced due to government restrictions associated with the pandemic, we of course guarantee fans full refunds."

The five-Test series is due to start in Brisbane on December 8 before a day/night match in Adelaide, followed by the traditional Boxing Day Test in Melbourne then Sydney and Perth.

Hockley's optimism comes despite Sydney, Brisbane and Perth currently in lockdown after a flare-up of the highly contagious Delta variant of Covid-19 which has seen sports events scamble to shift their games out of those cities.

With barely five months until the Ashes starts, it remains highly unlikely that the usual hordes of Barmy Army supporters will be able to travel to Australia, given current bans on international arrivals.

"Hopefully people will be able to make the trip but if they can't, then I know they'll be following very closely from England and from around the cricket world," Hockley said.

Australia are due to host Afghanistan in a one-off Test in Hobart ahead of the Ashes and will play New Zealand and Sri Lanka in limited overs games following their showdown with England.

Taunton: Skipper Mithali Raj's second successive fifty went in vain as Sophia Dunkley produced a fighting half-century after Kate Cross' five-wicket haul to help England Women register a five-wicket win over India Women and grab an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series on Wednesday.

Invited to bat, India could manage a below-par 221 in the stipulated 50 overs, build largely around Raj's 92-ball 59 and opener Shafali Verma's 55-ball 44.

Chasing 222 for a win, England batswomen couldn't capitalise on their starts to lose five wickets for 133 in 28.5 overs but Dunkley (73 not out) and Katherine Brunt (33 not out) produced a 92-run partnership for the unconquered sixth wicket to take the team home with 15 balls to spare.

Lauren Winfield Hill (42) and Amy Ellen Jones (28) were the other notable contributors for England in the run chase.

Kate Cross finished with a brilliant spell of 5/34 and was adjudged the Player of the Match. Twitter/@ICC

Raj did not take the field during the England run chase as she developed pain in her neck and her deputy Harmanpreet Kaur led the visiting team. Radha Yadav was the substitute fielder for Raj.

Earlier, the 38-year-old Raj, who had scored a fighting 72 in the first ODI, once again stood out in her 92-ball innings, which was studded with six boundaries but she didn't get any support from the other end as Cross kept chipping away at the wickets.

Put in to bat, Smriti Mandhana (22) and Shafali Verma (44) gave India a good start, adding 56 runs in 11.5 overs before the former played one on to her stumps to become the first victim of Cross.

Jemimah Rodrigues (8), who replaced Punam Raut in the playing XI, continued to struggle with the bat as Cross induced a leading edge from the batter to leave India at 76 for two in 16 overs.

Verma, who scored seven fours in her 55-ball innings, was then flummoxed by Sophie Ecclestone with wicketkeeper Amy Ellen Jones producing a sharp stumping in the next over.

Raj and vice-captain Kaur then steadied the innings, sharing 68 runs off 103 balls to take India across the 100-run mark.

However, Cross once again returned to break the partnership, this time getting rid of Kaur, who ended up getting a leading edge — similar to Rodrigues — and was easily pouched by the bowler.

New batter Deepti Sharma got one boundary but paid the price for a poor shot as she was caught by Dunkley in the deep with Cross being the beneficiary again.

Sneh Rana, one of the star performers of the one-off Test, too fell in similar fashion with her leading edge being caught by Heather Knight after a bit of a juggle as Cross claimed her fifth victim.

Taniya Bhatia then edged one to the keeper, while Shikha Pandey too was caught behind as Indian women slumped to 181 for 8 in 44 overs.

Raj was then run out while trying to steal a second run. Jhulan Goswami and Poonam Yadav then stitched 29 runs off 22 balls to swell the Indian total.

India skipper Mithali Raj on Sunday rued that her side "lacked intent" in all three departments of the game in the opening ODI and hinted that the team-combination could change in the second match against England.

India suffered an eight-wicket thrashing at the hands of the hosts in the series-opening match in Bristol on Sunday.

She also hinted that there would be change in team composition for the second match on Wednesday.

India are a team that generally prefers to chase, but toss is not something you can control in cricket, and more often than not whenever Raj and Co are asked to set a target they keep coming short. It was no different in Bristol.

Having asked to bat first, India could only manage 201/8 from the 50 overs. In reply, England chased down the target inside 35 overs, with 91 balls to spare. England, albeit with the benefit of chasing, scored at a rate of 5.86 runs per over, and at that rate, could have got around 293 had they batted full quota. India scored at a rate of 4.02 runs per over.

India will have to shed their outdated batting approach and play more freely to bounce back against formidable hosts England in the second women’s ODI in Taunton on Wednesday.

India consumed as many as 181 dot balls on way to posting a below par 201 which England chased down rather comfortably to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series on Sunday.

The game could see India making multiple changes in the playing eleven as the batters' inability to rotate strike is proving to be a big issue for the team.

Mithali Raj and Co need to win today to make a comeback in the series. If they lose today, England will seal the series 2-0.

Preview, 2nd ODI: India suffered a big loss in the first ODI against England, losing the series opener by eight wickets. Mithali Raj and her team will aiming comeback in the second game on Wednesday in order to level the series and keep it alive.

The India captain played well in the first game but it was not enough to take her side home as India struggled to get to a decent total. The snail-paced India innings, in fact, cost them the game, England racing to the target in just under 35 overs with plenty of wickets in hand.

Punam Raut and Raj played too many dots in the middle overs in their response to loss of early wickets. They had steadied Indian innings after early dismissals of openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma but the pace of the innings and failure of other batters meant India finished with only 201 on the board at the end of the allotted 50 overs.

India captain Mithali Raj needs to ste up in the 2nd ODI. AP

England's Tammy Beaumont (87 off 87), Natalie Sciver (74 off 74) played in completely contrasting manner as they raced past the total with over 15 overs remaining.

In the second ODI, India need to fix their weakness, which is maintaining a healthy run-rate while batting. Also, the new-ball bowlers are expected to put on a better show.

Squads:

England Squad: Lauren Winfield Hill, Tammy Beaumont, Heather Knight (c), Natalie Sciver, Amy Ellen Jones(w), Sophia Dunkley, Katherine Brunt, Sarah Glenn, Sophie Ecclestone, Anya Shrubsole, Kate Cross, Fran Wilson, Natasha Farrant, Freya Davies, Mady Villiers, Emily Arlott

India Squad: Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Punam Raut, Mithali Raj(c), Harmanpreet Kaur, Deepti Sharma, Pooja Vastrakar, Taniya Bhatia(w), Shikha Pandey, Jhulan Goswami, Ekta Bisht, Poonam Yadav, Sneh Rana, Jemimah Rodrigues, Radha Yadav, Priya Punia, Arundhati Reddy, Indrani Roy

Colombo: Three Sri Lankan cricket players ordered to leave the tour of England on disciplinary grounds will be dropped from a home series against India in July, officials said Wednesday.

Dubbed the "terrible trio" by media, vice-captain Kusal Mendis, opener Danushka Gunathilaka and wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella returned home Tuesday.

Sri Lanka Cricket officials said an inquiry into how they left the team's pandemic isolated hotel in England would start after their mandatory two-week quarantine.

None will be included in the three one day internationals and three Twenty20 games to start 13 July.

"They are likely to get a minimum one-year suspension if found guilty of several breaches of their contract," one official told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The trio was also pulled out of the three-match one-day international series against England after they were seen breaching their bio-secure bubble ahead of the first ODI in Durham.

Mendis and Dickwella were seen smoking in the streets of Durham, where they were based ahead of the ODI series.

In a second video on social media, Gunathilaka is seen joining the pair, violating the coronavirus rules of their stay.

England won the first ODI on Tuesday by five wickets. The second ODI is due to be played Thursday with the final on Sunday.

After Sri Lanka's whitewash in the T20 series against England, their fifth consecutive series defeat, disgruntled fans launched a campaign to shun the team on social media.

The hashtag #unfollowcricketers began to trend on Facebook on Sunday as thousands of fans boycotted the social media pages of Mendis and Gunathilaka, reports said.

Fans were also sharing memes asking each other not to watch the national team on television.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has reclaimed the number one position in the ICC Test Rankings for batsmen after leading his side to the World Test Championship title in Southampton last week.

The 30-year-old's knocks of 49 and 52 not out in the low-scoring final against India helped him move above the 900-point mark and he now enjoys a 10-point lead over Steve Smith (891 rating points).

India skipper Virat Kohli remains in fourth position while Rohit Sharma has moved up to the sixth spot. India wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant is seventh.

Williamson, who conceded the top spot to Smith two weeks ago, is back in the position he had first grabbed in November 2015 during a series against Australia.

Ross Taylor, who scored an unbeaten 47 and partnered in an unbroken 96-run stand with Williamson, has advanced three places to 14th position while left-hander Devon Conway has gained 18 slots to reach 42nd place after top-scoring with 52 in the first innings.

File image of New Zealand captain Kane Williamson. AP

New Zealand's fast bowlers too have gained after thriving in the seaming conditions with a player of the match Kyle Jamieson continuing the stupendous start to his Test career.

His figures of five for 31 and two for 30 have pushed him up to a career-best 13th position, not surprising since no bowler has taken more Test wickets at a better average than him since 1900.

Left-armer Trent Boult's figures of two for 48 and three for 39 have lifted him two places to 11th position while for India, vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane's progress of three places to 13th position after scores of 49 and 15, was the only notable gain.

Ravindra Jadeja has slipped behind West Indian Jason Holder to the second position after a week at the top of the rankings for all-rounders.

In the T20 Rankings, West Indies' left-handed opener Evin Lewis has moved from 13th to 10th position after a player of the match effort of 71 off 35 balls in the first of the two matches of their ongoing five-match series that counted for this week's rankings.

Left-arm spinner Fabian Allen has progressed 23 places to 20th position.

South Africa's Quinton de Kock (up one place to 22nd), Reeza Hendricks (up three places to 24th) and Temba Bavuma (up 24 places to 64th) are among the others to move up.

England's 3-0 series win over Sri Lanka, which should come as a morale booster for the 50-over World champions ahead of this year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup, sees several of their players move up too.

Chris Jordan (up five places to 11th), Mark Wood (up 11 places to 14th), Sam Curran (up 62 places to 39th) and David Willey (up 23 places to 51st) have progressed in the bowlers' list while for Sri Lanka, Wanindu Hasaranga has moved up five places to fifth and Dushmantha Chameera 41 places to 43rd.

New Delhi: The BCCI has decided to recommend women's cricket legend Mithali Raj and premier spinner R Ashwin for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, country's highest sporting honour.

For Arjuna Award, the Board will send the names of senior batsman Shikhar Dhawan, who was ignored last year, KL Rahul and pacer Jasprit Bumrah.

"No women cricketer has been nominated for Arjuna. Mithali's name has been recommended for Khel Ratna," a BCCI official told PTI on Wednesday.

It remains to be seen if Mithali is chosen by the Sports ministry-appointed panel in an Olympic year.

The lack on intent from Indian batsmen proved to be the deciding factor in the first ODI against England. Image: Twitter/@BCCIWomen

She completed 22 years in international cricket last week. The 38 year-old is also the leading run getter in ODIs with more than 7,000 runs.

Ashwin, who is already an Arjuna awardee like Mithali, has also been a consistent performer for India in Test cricket. He has taken 413 wickets in 79 Tests besides 150 and 42 scalps in ODIs and T20s though he doesn't play for India in the shorter formats.

Dhawan, who will be captaining India in the upcoming limited overs series in Sri Lanka, is a frontrunner for Arjuna.

The 35-year-old southpaw has scored 5977 runs in 142 ODIs besides 2315 and 1673 Test and T20 runs respectively.

New Delhi: The International Cricket Council (ICC) will award standardised 12 points for every match won during the second World Test Championships cycle which kicks off with the five-match series between India and England in August.

Teams will get six points in case of a tie and four points if the match ends in a draw.

That there would be changes to the points system was first declared by ICC interim CEO Geoff Allardice during a media interaction earlier this month.

"Instead of each series being worth the same number of points, 120, irrespective of whether the series is played over two Tests or five Tests, the next cycle will see each match being worth the same number of points - a maximum of 12 per match," an ICC board member told PTI.

Captain Kane Williamson poses with the ICC Test Mace along with teammates after New Zealand defeated India by eight wickets in the WTC final. AP

"Teams will be ranked on the percentage of available points they won from the matches they have played."
The changes in the points system will have to be ratified by the ICC chief executives committee in the coming weeks.

"The aim was to try and simplify the points system and to allow teams to be meaningfully compared on the table at any point, though they may have played differing numbers of matches and series," the Board member added.

Apart from the India-England series, the Ashes later this year will be the only other five-match affair in the second cycle which will end in June 2023.

Australia's tour of India next year is the only four-Test series in the upcoming cycle.

The nine Test teams will play a total of six series: three home and three away just like the previous edition.

In the inaugural edition, which New Zealand won after defeating India in the final earlier this month, the ICC had changed the qualification criteria for the World Test Championship from maximum points earned to percentage points earned from the matches contested after many scheduled series were cancelled due to COVID-19.

During the last cycle, the value for each series was 120 points where a two-match India-Bangladesh series had 60 points for a win while a four-match India-Australia Test series had 30 points in store per victory.

"England will play the most Tests (21) in WTC-2 followed by India (19), Australia (18) and South Africa (15). The inaugural WTC winners New Zealand will play only 13 matches, similar to that of West Indies and Sri Lanka, but one less than Pakistan (14)," ESPNcricinfo reported.

Karachi: Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan has rejected reports that he stepped down as the national team's batting coach due to an argument with batsman Hasan Ali but also declined to state the exact reasons for his decision citing contractual obligations.

Younis resigned a few days ago but neither him nor the Pakistan Cricket Board offered any explanation for it. Later, media reports blamed the series of events on Younis' tiff with Ali over ice bath following a training session.

"Let me make it clear that the reason for my decision to step down as batting coach is not the incident with Hasan Ali. The entire episode has been blown out of proportion," he said in an interview in Jang newspaper.

File image of Younis Khan. Reuters

"Yes the trainer, Yasir Malik, had asked me to speak to Hasan and convince him that he should take an ice bath. There was an argument but Hasan apologized to me about it and we embraced and the matter was closed," Younis said.

The former batsman said Ali was touring England at the moment and for this issue to be played up was strange.

He made it clear that there were other reasons for his decision to step down but he was bound by his contract with the PCB which didn't allow him to speak on the matter for six months.

"I have not made any comments on the matter so far in the better interests of Pakistan cricket and PCB and our team is also touring England," Younis added.

But he claimed that there were some people in the PCB who leaked out things to dent his confidence and reputation.

"I have never run after money for positions. My only concern was to do something for Pakistan cricket and ensure the players could take advantage of my experience," he added.

Younis noted that from day one he had made it clear he would only talk to the Chairman, Ehsan Mani or CEO Wasim Khan.

"In future also if I have to serve Pakistan cricket and work with the board I will ensure matters are made more transparent and clear in our agreement," he stated.

Younis, known to be a temperamental person, stepped down as batting coach just before the team's departure for England and since then there have been speculations about the reasons for his sudden exit.

Another reason being speculated for his decision was that he was declined permission to join the team's bio-bubble in England a bit later than scheduled. Younis reportedly needed the time to undergo a critical dental procedure.

Pakistan's head coach, Misbah-ul-Haq has said that Younis' exit as batting coach is a big loss to the players.

Former India captain Diana Edulji said the the middle-order has too many “anchors” which means Punam Raut can make way for Jemimah Rodrigues at number three.

“You can’t afford to play 180 dot balls in modern-day cricket. That has to change. The seniors need to step up and if they can’t, then youngsters should be given the opportunities ahead of the World Cup,” Edulji told PTI referring to the trio of Mithali, Punam and Harmanpreet Kaur. “If you keep losing with the seniors, then you have to try out the younger players who showed in the one off Test what they are capable of.”

India have only crossed 250 thrice since the 2017 World Cup, something the team has to do on a consistent basis to compete with the likes of England and Australia.

Though Mithali scored a 72 but her strike rate needs drastic improvement and T20 skipper Harmanpreet is desperately seeking some consistency.

“Harman is not due for a big score, she is overdue,” said Edulji.

India went in with only one specialist spinner in Ekta Bisht at Bristol besides three pacers.

Pacer Shikha Pandey, who has made a comeback with the UK tour, has looked far from troubling the English batters and could be dropped for the second ODI. Mithali can bring in Arundhati Reddy in her place or get another specialist spinner.

Sneh Rana, who did brilliantly with both the bat and ball on her Test debut, can be the second spin all-rounder alongside Deepti Sharma.

“I would want the team to stick to its strength which is spin bowling. Two spinners must play,” added Edulji.

India only have to look to their opponents for inspiration. England played a near perfect game of ODI cricket to outplay an out of sorts team.

St. George's: Tabraiz Shamsi enhanced his reputation as the top T20 bowler in the international game by inspiring South Africa to a thrilling one-run victory over the West Indies in the third of their five-match series at the National Cricket Stadium in Grenada on Tuesday.

Defending another moderate total of 167 for eight after they were put in to bat for the third time in the series, the left-arm wrist spinner bowled his most economical four-over spell in conceding just 13 runs for the important wickets of Evin Lewis and Shimron Hetmyer.

Yet as well as he bowled, and as much as the vaunted West Indies power-hitters stuttered for the second consecutive match, the duel still came down to the final over bowled by Kagiso Rabada with 15 runs needed.

Fabian Allen struck an early boundary and then a six off the last ball of the match but the pacer had held his nerve in between those wayward deliveries to limit the home side to 166 for seven.

Tabraiz Shamsi celebrates the dismissal of Shimron Hetmyer during the 3rd T20I between West Indies and South Africa. AFP

South Africa now take a 2-1 lead going into the fourth match at the same venue on Thursday.

Lewis and Nicholas Pooran were the joint-topscorers for the West Indies with 27 while Andre Russell contributed 25.

"We faced a lot of criticism after we lost the first match so badly so I am really proud of how we have fought back in the last two matches," said Shamsi after receiving the man-of-the-match award.

"These pitches are getting harder and harder to score runs and while I would have obviously liked a bigger total to defend, I felt we had a good chance once we stuck to our plans, and on this occasion, it all worked out well for us in the end."

Earlier Obed McCoy and veteran Dwayne Bravo combined for seven wickets as South Africa faltered from a promising position.

Quinton de Kock, playing in his 50th T20 International, led the Proteas batting effort once again with a topscore of 72 while Rassie van der Dussen contributed 32 and Aiden Markram, brought into the middle order at the expense of Heinrich Klaasen, chipped in with 23.

However it was the 24-year-old Vincentian McCoy who stole the show with his assortment of cleverly-disguised deliveries earning the seamer the impressive figures of four for 22, bettering his haul of three for 25 just two days earlier.

Bravo, again charged with the responsibility of bowling in the final overs of the innings, made his experience under pressure count in taking two late wickets to finish with three for 25.

After McCoy removed opener Reeza Hendricks and captain Temba Bavuma in the fifth over, de Kock put on 43 with Markram and 60 with van der Dussen to put South Africa in position for a total closer to the 180-run mark.

However de Kock's demise to Bravo, for an innings which came off 51 balls and included two sixes and five fours, triggered a slide from 147 for three in the 16th over with the tourists losing five wickets for 17 runs.

Chester-le-Street, United Kingdom: Chris Woakes set up a comfortable five-wicket win finished by Joe Root as England again proved too strong for Sri Lanka in the opening one-day international at the Riverside on Tuesday to go 1-0 up in a three-match series.

Woakes, in only his third international in over nine months, finished with excellent figures of 4-18 from his full 10 overs as 50-over world champions England dismissed Sri Lanka for a meagre 185 at Durham's headquarters.

Root, in his 150th match at this level, then made 79 not out as England cantered home with more than 15 overs to spare after a brief wobble.

'Felt good'

Warwickshire all-rounder Woakes, named player of the match, told BBC Radio: "I felt good today, it is always nice to get a couple (of wickets) early.

"I try to assess conditions early, and work out what it is best to do on the wicket, while taking wickets. I just try and make it as hard as possible for the batter on that wicket."

Sri Lanka's batting had faltered repeatedly during a preceding 3-0 T20 series loss to England and it was no great surprise to see them dismissed cheaply after England captain Eoin Morgan won the toss.

Chris Woakes in action during the first ODI between England and Sri Lanka at Chester-le-Street. AP

The tourists were missing three senior players after Kusal Mendis, Niroshan Dickwella and Danushka Gunathilaka were all sent home following a breach of team Covid-19 regulations.

Sri Lanka captain Kusal Perera made a valuable 73 for a Sri Lanka side featuring three debutants.

Together with Wanindu Hasaranga (54) he shared a stand of 99.

Perera and Hasaranga kept England at bay, the former with stylish top-order and the latter aggressively taking 22 in boundaries off fellow leg-spinner Adil Rashid.

Woakes' return ended the partnership, with Hasaranga holing out in the deep.

That was the start of a collapse that saw seven wickets lost for 40 runs, with left-arm quick Willey removing Perera on his way to 3-44.

Jonny Bairstow hit the first two balls of England's reply for four before he played on to paceman Binura Fernando for 43.

Morgan and Sam Billings both fell cheaply to fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera.

But Sri Lanka, defending such a low total, needed every chance to go to hand if they were to achieve an improbable victory.

Instead wicketkeeper Perera dropped Moeen Ali first ball. Had he clung on, England would have been 80-5 — by the time Moeen was out for 28 they had all but won the game at 171-5.

Test captain Root batted serenely, hitting just two fours in a 58-ball fifty, before Sam Curran struck the winning runs.

"Joe Root is one of the best in the world in most situations," said Morgan. "Today he showed his class."

Such are the demands upon Root, he has been left out of England's T20 side in recent times as much as to help give him a break from the demands of Test and ODI cricket as much as on form grounds.

But Morgan, speaking on a day where it was confirmed the Twenty20 World Cup starting in October had been moved from India to the United Arab Emirates and Oman because of Covid-19 concerns, said of Root: "You can't rule him out of the T20 World Cup. He went a long way to getting us to the final in 2016."

Toss report: West Indies won the toss, and chose to field as they hope to regain the series lead in the third T20I against South Africa at the National Cricket Stadium in St George's, Grenada.

Both teams made changes to their XIs for the third game. For the West Indies, veteran hard-hitting batsman Chris Gayle missed out along with opener Andre Fletcher, with Shimron Hetmyer and Lendl Simmons taking their places in the top order. The Proteas, who bounced back in the T20I leg of the tour of the Caribbean with a 16-run win in the second match, replaced Aiden Markram with Heinrich Klaasen in their middle order.

West Indies had begun the five-T20I series, crucial to both teams in their preparation for the T20 World Cup in the UAE later this year, on a strong note after the mauling at the hands of the South Africans in the Test series earlier this month. Opting to field in that game as well, Fabian Allen led the way among the bowlers with 2/18 to restrict the visitors to 160/6 before Evin Lewis (71 off 35 balls) went berserk in the run-chase to setup a comfortable eight-wicket win.

South Africa, however, pulled level in the very next game. Put in to bat once again, South Africa got off to a flying start thanks to openers Reeza Hendicks and Quinton de Kock, the pair adding 73 runs, with skipper Temba Bavuma also chipping in with a valuable 46. While the South Africans couldn't make the most of the strong start as they ended up a total that was just six runs more than what they had managed in the series opener, the bowlers were far more disciplined this time around as Kagiso Rabada (3/37) and George Linde (2/19) led the way to setup a 16-run series-levelling win.

Taunton (Eng): The Indian women's cricket team would be trying out various options during the upcoming England series and beyond to check out what is the best possible combination that can be fielded going into next year's WODI World Cup in New Zealand, said senior player Jhulan Goswami.

India's senior middle-order batters like skipper Mithali Raj, Punam Raut and Deepti Sharma were all guilty of playing too many dots, about 180-odd deliveries, in the first ODI which England won by eight wickets chasing a modest target of 202.

Goswami didn't give a definitive answer on vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur's batting position but indicated that a lot of options will be tried out before the World Cup in New Zealand next year.

"Well, we are trying to settle our combination. We are trying to create a few options. Now which options will click for us, we are (still) searching for that. Whatever things will happen (options we finalise), the management will take a call before the World Cup," Goswami said on the eve of the second WODI against England.

"Before the World Cup, we are trying to settle down a few things. Hopefully, in the coming matches, coming series, we will sort out all those things."

Young Shafali Verma shouldn't be put under immense pressure of expectation, feels Goswami, who is confident that it's just a matter of time before the middle-order will produce impact performances expected of them in the ongoing series against England.

"Well...It's is just the first match for Shafali. Day before yesterday, she made her debut in ODI cricket. We are expecting so much from her because that is the impact she has had," Goswami, the world's highest wicket-taker in women's ODIs, wants everyone to cut some slack when it comes to analysing the performance of a teenager.

"We just need one good knock from one among the top 3. They will definitely score runs. Just these things happen in cricket," Goswami said about the consumption of 180 dot balls.

"Every day is a new day, every day is a new learning experience. One good innings from the three. Harman(Kaur) needs one good knock, we know Harman can do it. One good knock is required from our middle-order," the 38-year-old seamer said.

Jhulan also believes that as a bowling group, they need to up their game after Tammy Beaumont and Nat Sciver gave them a real pasting in the opener with both scoring at a strike rate of 100.

"Honestly speaking, we need to come back as a bowling group strongly. We have discussed a lot of things, hopefully we can sort it out and come back strongly. You have to believe in these bowlers, they are your best bowlers, they have the ability.

"Both of our medium-pacers Shikha Pandey, Pooja Vastrakar and we have another two pacers in the side, all are very good cricketers. Shikha is coming back from a break.

"Puja is playing after a long time. They are quality bowlers. They need a little bit of time, they will do well. They have won matches single-handedly for India. We just need to give them some time, they will come back strongly. I have a lot of confidence in them," Jhulan signed off.

Dubai: This year's T20 World Cup, which has been moved to the UAE and Oman from India due to the COVID-10 pandemic, will be played from October 17 to November 14, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Tuesday.

The ICC statement came a day after BCCI intimated the governing body that the event can be moved out of India.

"The BCCI will remain the hosts of the event, which will now be held in Dubai International Stadium, the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, the Sharjah Stadium, and the Oman Cricket Academy Ground, from 17 October to 14 November 2021," the ICC stated.

The first round of the tournament, comprising the eight qualifying teams, will now be split between Oman and UAE.
Four of these teams will then progress to the Super 12s round where they'll join the eight automatic qualifiers.

The upcoming edition will be the first men's T20 World Cup played since 2016, when West Indies beat England in the final in India.

The eight teams competing in the preliminary stage are Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Netherlands, Scotland, Namibia, Oman and Papua New Guinea, before the play-off stage and the Final on 14 November.

"Our priority is to deliver the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021 safely, in full and in its current window," said acting ICC CEO Geoff Allardice.

"...the decision gives us the certainty we need to stage the event in a country that is a proven international host of multi-team events in a bio-secure environment.

"We will work closely with the BCCI, the Emirates Cricket Board and Oman Cricket to ensure fans can enjoy a wonderful celebration of cricket.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly added: "We would have been happier hosting it in India but considering the uncertainty due to the COVID-19 situation and the importance of a world championship, the BCCI will now continue to host this tournament in UAE and Oman."

Toss update: England have won the toss in the first ODI against Sri Lanka and have opted to bowl first.

Sri Lanka, led by Kusal Perera, have named three debutants for the series-opener —Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya Lakshan and Praveen Jayawickrama.

The visitors, however, have off-field woes. The trio of Kusal Mendis, Danushka Gunathilaka and Niroshan Dickwella were suspended by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) for a bio-bubble breach, with the trio having been seen roaming on the streets of Durham after the third T20 on Sunday.

Skipper Kusal Perera remains Sri Lanka’s most experienced campaigner in ODIs, having played over 100 matches.

For England, batsman Dawid Malan has left the English camp due to personal reasons, which means Liam Livingstone will take the openers' slot.

Given the overall inexperience of the Lankan side, England start as favourites to win the ODI series.

Sri Lanka playing XI: Kusal Perera (Captain), Pathum Nissanka, Charith Asalanka, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dhananjaya Lakshan, Ramesh Mendis,  Chamika Karunaratne, Dushmantha Chameera, Praveen Jayawickrama, Binura Fernando.

England playing XI: Eoin Morgan(Captain), Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Sam Billings, Moeen Ali, Liam Livingstone, Chris Woakes, David Willey, Sam Curran, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood.

Dubai: India captain Mithali Raj has returned to the top five of the latest ICC Women's ODI Rankings for batswomen after top-scoring for India with 72 in the series opener against England in Bristol.

The 38-year-old, who has completed 22 years in international cricket, rescued her side from a precarious 27 for two but India's total of 201 for eight was not challenging enough for England, who will be defending their World Cup title in New Zealand next year.

Mithali, who had led India to the final of the last World Cup played at Lord's in 2017, has gained three slots to reach fifth position after the Bristol knock. The former top-ranked batter returns to the top five for the first time since October 2019.

There was not much else to write home about for the Indian side in terms of rankings, with all-rounder Pooja

Vastrakar re-entering in 97th place among batters and 88th among bowlers.

Mithali Raj: Twitter/@BCCIWomen

Hard-hitting opener Shafali Verma, the top-ranked T20I batter, has entered the ODI rankings at 120th place after scoring a 14-ball 15 on debut.

England opener Tammy Beaumont has consolidated her top position after her player of the match effort, gaining 26 rating points to reach 791 after her unbeaten 87 while Natalie Sciver's 74 not out sees her inch up from ninth to eight position in the latest women's ranking update, which is carried out on Tuesdays.

In the bowlers' list, fast bowler Anya Shrubsole has progressed three places to eighth after grabbing two wickets in the match while left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone, top-ranked in T20Is, has gained four slots to reach 10th position with a haul of three for 40 that included the scalps of Mithali and Harmanpreet Kaur.

Kate Cross has moved up three places to 25th.

London: The tension and nervousness caused during New Zealand's run chase on the final day of the Word Test Championship title clash against India forced their star pacer Kyle Jamieson to hide inside the bathroom.

Kyle Jamieson did not get enough time to celebrate as he was back in the field with 48 hours of the final, this time for his county side Surrey. AP

Jamieson, who was the Man of the Match for his seven wickets in the final, felt nervous while watching the action from the dressing room.

"It was probably the toughest period of cricket I've been a part of, in terms of watching," Jamieson told Country Sport Breakfast on Gold AM.

"We were sitting inside and actually watching on TV. There was a bit of a delay but it seemed like every ball the Indian crowd was up and about and I was like 'jeez it's a wicket' or something like that, but it turned out it was just a block or a single."

Eventually, captain Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor got the team home rather comfortably while chasing 139 for a win.

"It was pretty tough to watch. I actually tried to at times to go to the bathroom where there was no noise to just get away from it for a while because it was quite nerve-racking.

"But it was nice to have Kane and Ross out there, two of our greatest ever batters really to calm the nerves and finish the job the way they did," said the lanky pacer.

Jamieson did not get enough time to celebrate as he was back in the field with 48 hours of the final, this time for his county side Surrey.

"It was a quick turnaround. I think within 48 hours I was back on the park playing T20 for Surrey. It's kind of the life we live a little bit. But it's nice to stay on and to experience county cricket for the next few weeks.

"It was certainly tough to say goodbye to those guys (NZ teammates). Coming off a high of what we just experienced and that moment we all enjoyed together, to go and say goodbye was quite tough."

Jamieson had India and his skipper at Royal Challengers Bangalore, Virat Kohli, dismissed twice in the final.

The pacer is feeling a little bit homesick after being away for close to three months.

"It's been about three months and will be about just over four months by the time I get out of MIQ (managed isolation and quarantine). It's been a long time and I've certainly loved my time at home. So it's been tough at times but I guess it's been the environment we're in.

"Look, I'm pretty fortunate to be able to still have our jobs and to be able to go around the world and work. I'm pretty grateful for that but I'm looking forward to getting home in a few weeks' time."

After a humbling eight-wicket defeat in the first ODI against England, India would be forced to look for fresh combinations and approach for the second match as they aim to keep the three-match series alive.

The biggest factor behind India's heavy defeat was their low scoring rate. Their innings accounted for 181 dot balls as batters struggled to rotate the strike. The most disappointing fact about India's batting was the lack of intent shown by Mithali Raj and her partners.

Jhulan Goswami was the pick of the bowlers for India in the first ODI. AP

Not scoring enough runs while batting first in ODIs has been an old issue for India but they soon need to get their act together as they build their squad for the ODI World Cup, which will be held early next year.

Having Punam Raut at No 3 and captain Raj at the No 4 slot also didn't help India's case. The management may give Jemimah Rodrigues an opportunity to bat at the No 3 slot, to provide the required impetus to India's run rate.

Pooja Vastrakar, who made a handy 15 off 17, may also see a promotion in the batting lineup. In the bowling department, Jhulan Goswami was once again the pick of the pacers but her partner Shikha Pandey had an ordinary day and could make the way for Arundhati Reddy. India could also call up spin all-rounder Sneh Rana in place of Ekta Bisht to strengthen their batting.

England had a near-perfect day in the field during the first ODI and would aim to seal the series on Wednesday.

Here's all you need to know about the second ODI between India and England:

Birmingham: Eighty percent crowd capacity has been allowed for the third ODI between England and Pakistan at Edgbaston next month as part of the UK Government's Events Research Programme (ERP).

The fixture, which is the final game of a three-match ODI series between the two sides, is slated to be played on 13 July.

Edgbaston will be able to accommodate around 19,000 fans, including under 16s, "in the stadium bowl and hospitality lounges without social distancing as part of the research study."

"It's fantastic for sport in the West Midlands that so many cricket fans will be able to enjoy another blockbuster fixture in England versus Pakistan at Edgbaston," Stuart Cain, Warwickshire's chief executive said.

Earlier this month, 70 percent capacity crowds (around 60,000 spectators) were permitted at Edgbaston for the second Test between England and New Zealand.

"The recent Test match gave us a fantastic opportunity to build a new model for large scale sporting events and I'm pleased to see elements of this first trial being carried forward for the Pakistan match.

"Technology played a big part in this and we will again focus on using this as a way of creating a safe environment whilst enhancing Edgbaston's reputation as one of the best atmospheres in world cricket," Cain added.

All attendees above the age of 11 years will be required to show a negative COVID-19 lateral flow test result or proof of two vaccinations at least 14 days before the fixture to secure entry.

London: Australia batsman Marnus Labuschagne has been forced to pull out of Glamorgan's T20 Blast match against Middlesex after his compatriot Nick Selman tested positive for COVID-19.

Selman, who earned youth representative honours for Queensland at both cricket and Australian Rules, will have to spend 10 days in self-isolation, Glamorgan said.

"Batsman Nick Selman has tested positive for coronavirus following the results of a PCR test. He will now spend 10 days in self-isolation," Glamorgan said in a statement.

"The club also identified Labuschagne and Michael Neser as potential close contacts and are taking the precautionary measure of removing them from the match day squad."

"All other team members, coaches and staff returned negative results..."

Labuschagne is Glamorgan's top scorer but Neser is yet to play a game in the competition with the club opting for Colin Ingram for their second overseas spot so far.

With a hectic schedule, the Australian duo could miss more T20 games, something that would hamper Labuschagne's bid for a spot in the T20 World Cup later this year.

Auckland: New Zealand bowling coach Shane Jurgensen considers winning the inaugural World Test Championship title as his "greatest coaching achievement, while terming the pace quartet of Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Neil Wagner and Kyle Jamieson as the best in the world.

New Zealand defeated India by eight wickets at Southampton last week to claim the WTC crown, their second ICC trophy.

"I think for me this is about, for all of New Zealand really, from people that have always gone to (put) the extra effort from New Zealand Cricket's staff, board, sponsors, the caterers at the ground we play at, the curators at all the grounds, the physios, the domestic coaches and the CEOs — everyone has had an input into this somewhere and a valuable contribution and it really means a lot to us now," he said.

"I think, at times, I've been really emotional in my room, and also for me personally my wife because she puts up with me being away a lot. For me, personally, this is my greatest coaching achievement," Jurgensen was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.

Jurgensen revealed that he was still crying tears of joy and was watching over and over again the sixth day's play while being in isolation after returning home.

"I've seen a few highlights. I've sort of been reading a lot and watching a bit on YouTube, so looking at it from all different angles," he said.

"But for me what is different this time is the reflection on me personally and also you know for me in my area — the bowling unit what they have achieved

"I think the morning of the last day to be able to make the vital breakthroughs with Kyle (Jamieson) and Tim (Southee) and Trent (Boult). It was a fantastic effort to put ourselves in a position to chase a reasonably low total.

"Oh! I've cried. I've cried a few times — probably every day since the win. You sort of sit there and then you go: 'Wow! World Test champions'."

Jurgensen has held coaching roles with Bangladesh, Fiji, Scotland, and New Zealand, was effusive in his praise for his pace quartet.

"I think so. I've been thinking that (New Zealand have the best attack) for a while. So it's just me and my role and belief in these bowlers; what they bring to us as a team and the challenges they have overseas," he said.

Jurgensen said that now people will sit up and take notice of the fact that this wasn't a fluke.

"But, I think they are and we can probably strongly say that right now — this hasn't been a fluke and it has been happening for a long time. As I said, the belief in the bowling group — how they plan, how fit they are, how strong they are and how much they believe in each other. The trust is amazing and we got four or five bowlers in the final, but all do different things.

"Kyle's height and accuracy, to be able to swing it both ways at good pace. Tim's accuracy, new-ball execution — unbelievable. He can adapt to use the crease — over and around — to left-handers and right-handers.

"We know Trent's ability with the new ball, but he took wickets with the old ball; he's been doing that for a while, so it's nothing new for me and the team. We know that Neil (Wagner) makes people uncomfortable on the back foot and the front foot with the lengths he bowls, but he's now getting guys out like Trent. So, he's building up a different skillset to be able to swing the ball both ways and seam it," he added.

Colombo: Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Monday suspended three players, including batsman Kusal Mendis and wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella, for breaching the bio-bubble during their ongoing tour of England and ordered their immediate return to the country.

The two, along with opener Danushka Gunathilaka, were seen roaming the streets of Durham after the final T20 international on Sunday night, which Sri Lanka lost by a massive 89 runs.

All three players were a part of the playing XI in the game.

"Sri Lanka Cricket executive Committee has suspended Kusal Mendis, Danushka Gunathilaka & Niroshan Dickwella for breaching the bio- bubble and they will be immediately recalled to Sri Lanka," SLC secretary Mohan De Silva said in a statement.

Reacting to the video, which was posted by a Sri Lankan fan, SLC chief Shammi Silva said, "an investigation is underway as they have breached the (code of) conduct."

Sri Lanka went down 0-3 in the T20 series that ended on Sunday. This was the island nation's fifth straight series loss in T20 internationals since October 2020.

The defeat led to former greats such as Sanath Jayasuriya, Muttiah Muralitharan, Roshan Mahanama, Hashan Thilakaratne and Tillekaratne Dilshan expressing dismay at the poor performance.

Sri Lanka will play the first of three ODIs with England tomorrow at Chester le Street.

New Delhi: The T20 World Cup scheduled to be held in India is being shifted to the UAE owing to the health safety concerns posed by COVID-19, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly told PTI on Monday, ending weeks of speculation surrounding the mega-event in October-November.

"We have officially intimated the ICC that the T20 World Cup can be shifted to the United Arab Emirates. The details are being chalked out," Ganguly said.

"The decision was taken keeping health safety concerns of all stakeholders in mind," he added.

The BCCI will, however, remain the hosts of the showpiece.

Asked if 17 October has been finalised as the start date of the tournament, Ganguly said: "We will be able to finalise itinerary details in some days. 17 October start hasn't yet been finalised."

Even an ICC spokesperson confirmed that the global body is yet to zero in on a final schedule.

The ICC, at the start of the month, had given BCCI a four-week window to decide and inform whether India could host the marquee event considering the COVID-19 situation in the country.

PTI was first to report on 4 May that the tournament was being shifted to the UAE.

This was after the pandemic forced the postponement of IPL, the second part of which is also being held in the UAE in September-October.

It was a foregone conclusion that India will find it difficult to host a 16-country tournament across nine cities with so many layers of health security concerns being there.

In fact, the ICC had already started its preparations and logistics for the tournament which will be held in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi.

The qualifying round could be held in Muscat, which will give ideal time to the pitches in UAE to freshen up after 31 remaining games of IPL are held till 15 October.

Once the IPL was shifted to the UAE, it was a foregone conclusion that the T20 World Cup will move too given the looming concerns about a possible third wave of COVID-19 infection around that time.

India was ravaged by the second wave in April-May with scarcity of essential medical supplies adding to the horror that unfolded with over 4 lakh daily cases at the peak of the crisis.

"If the BCCI is unable to host an eight-team IPL in September, how could it have hosted World T20 within a month? Also now we have a new variant (Delta 3) and there is every possibility of a third wave in the country in October.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah seen witnessing an IPL match. Sportzpics

"The BCCI brass was always well aware that it won''t be practically feasible," an ICC board member told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Also, India is on the ''Red List'' of countries like England and Australia and travelling could be an issue if the rules are not relaxed by then.

It is also understood that most of the member nations were comfortable playing the IPL in the UAE after multiple cases of bubble breach happened during the postponed edition in India.

Also the 2020 IPL in the UAE was a humongous success with a tight bio-bubble.

The BCCI was also mulling if Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Pune could host a three-city event with the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium. But there were several complications on that front too.

"Pakistan playing in Mumbai or Pune would have always been an issue. So there were multiple factors. In IPL, multiple players got infected by COVID-19, you can have good replacements.

"But what about the weaker teams? What if they lose five or six top players? They won''t have ready replacements," the source reasoned.

The Indian team, with its T20 players, will reach Dubai from Manchester on 15 September aboard a charter flight to play in the IPL.

It will be based in the country for close to two months till the second week of November when the T20 World Cup ends

Lahore: The PCB has added three more spots in the central contracts for women cricketers for the 2021-22 season, while also increasing the monthly retainers across all categories by 10 per cent, the board announced on Monday.

The contracts, which come into effect from 1 July, include 12 spots, divided between A, B and C categories, while eight cricketers have been retained in the emerging contracts list.

"In total, the PCB has awarded 20 contracts for the 2021-22 cricket season, which is two more than the previous," the PCB said in a statement.

"Monthly retainers across all rungs including the emerging category have been increased by 10 per cent and the national women's selection committee has kept one spot open in the central contracts that will be awarded in the year based on on-field performance," it added.

The decision was taken by the PCB in its bid to continue to reward and incentivise top-performing women cricketers.

"The Pakistan Cricket Board has increased the list of central contracts from nine to 12 as it continues to value and reward the best performers on the circuit," Urooj Mumtaz, the chair of the national women's selection committee, said.

"The emerging category retains eight players. Over the next year, the PCB, in total, will contract 20 women cricketers, which is an increase of two from the 2020-21 season.

"To ensure that the players who have not earned central contracts stay motivated, we have announced an open spot in the central contracts to be awarded to one player for outstanding performances during the year."

The Pakistan women's team host England for two T20Is and three ODIs in October, before they play ICC Women's Cricket World Cup Qualifier in December and feature in ICC Women's Cricket World Cup and Commonwealth Games next year.

Central contracts for women's cricketers for 2021-22 season:

Category A: Bismah Maroof and Javeria Khan

Category B: Aliya Riaz, Diana Baig and Nida Dar

Category C: Anam Amin, Fatima Sana, Kainat Imtiaz, Nahida Khan, Nashra Sandhu, Omaima Sohail and Sidra Nawaz

Emerging contracts for women's cricketers for 2021-22 season: Ayesha Naseem, Kaynat Hafeez, Muneeba Ali Siddiqui, Najiha Alvi, Rameen Shamim, Saba Nazir, Sadia Iqbal and Syeda Aroob Shah.

Christchurch: New Zealand has been a consistent side over the years and deserves to play more Test cricket following its title-winning run at the inaugural World Test Championships, believes pace spearhead Tim Southee.

New Zealand defeated India by eight wickets in the final to claim the World Test Championship title last week.

The Black Caps have played just four three-match series out of the 18 bilateral Test series in the last five years. India also played 18 bilateral Test series but 12 of them included at least three games.

"I guess one of our strengths as a side is that we sort of just concentrate on what's put in front of us, and what we try and achieve as a group, (but) I guess playing more Test cricket as a whole would be nice," Southee was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

"We don't play that many three-match series, so I guess just being able to play more Test matches and hopefully more three-match series rather than two-match series.

Unlike the Kiwis, who mostly played two-match rubbers, Virat Kohli and his men also featured in a number of four and five-Test series during the same duration.

"But yeah, I think it's tough with future tours (programme) already being in place up to now, but just being able to perform at this level for a number of years and being a consistent side, I guess we have that right to play more Test cricket," Southee said.

Southee said a three-Test series is more challenging and provides more opportunities to test a player.

"As players, Test cricket is the pinnacle of the game, and you always want to play more. It's something that we haven't played a lot of, three-match-series, so to be able to test yourself over three matches rather than just two matches...

"...it's obviously a lot more taxing, it's a tougher battle to get yourself up and go again over three matches, but that's the beauty of it, and it's part and parcel of it.

"It's tough cricket, and you want to play as much as you possibly can."

The 32-year-old pacer said he would like to extend his career as much as he can and is taking inspiration from teammate Ross Taylor and England pacer James Anderson.

"I feel as fit as I ever have, so I'd love to play this game for as long as I possibly can," Southee said.

"Seeing guys like James Anderson, at 38, still being able to do what he's doing gives everyone hope, Ross Taylor at 37 still being able to perform at this level.

"I think it comes down to the individual standards that you set yourself, and you're able to hold those high standards that it takes to play at this level, then I guess age is only a number. I hope there's a lot of life left in me."
