Dhaka: Star Bangladesh players Shakib Al Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman will not be given No Objection Certificate (NOC) to play in the remaining games of Indian Premier League (IPL), the country's cricket board president Nazmul Hassan said on Monday.

All-rounder Shakib and left-arm pacer Mustafizur play for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) respectively.

The IPL, which was suspended on 4 May after multiple cases of COVID-19 inside its bio-bubble, will resume in the third week of September (likely on 19 September) and end in the second week of October.

"It is almost impossible to provide NOC (for IPL) considering our international commitments. I don't see any chance of giving it (NOC) to them. We have the (T20) World Cup coming up and now every match is important," Nazmul was quoted as saying by Ekattor TV, a local Bengali news channel.

Bangladesh have three white-ball series against Australia, New Zealand and England lined up during the same window in which IPL will finish its remaining 31 games.

England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has said that it won't allow its players to take part in the IPL. Cricket Australia (CA) has also said that the discussions with their players about rejoining the IPL hasn't taken place at the moment.

New Delhi: The unexpected three-week gap gave India's top cricketers much needed rest and the hotel quarantine period has been well utilised to address the fitness areas which otherwise goes untouched during a season, team's strength and conditioning (S&C) coach Sohum Desai said on Monday.

Desai along with New Zealand's Nick Webb are the two S&C coaches of the men's team and are in charging of getting the side into peak fitness before the marquee World Test Championship final in Southampton from 18 June.

"Nick and I both feel that we have benefitted by the gap we got for the boys to take rest. They have had a long year — right from last IPL to this," Desai told BCCI.tv.

Desai said that they had asked all the top India stars to "rest and take some time off, stay with family and relax" before getting back to training.

The team will depart for United Kingdom on Wednesday night and currently they are slowly building towards the tour with moderate to high intensity training.

"It has taken three weeks to take them through training which ideally they are not able to undertake due to the skills (practice), and matches being constantly there," Desai, the man who has worked tremendously with Mohammed Siraj from his India A days, said.

"Slowly, we started building them towards what they actually need to do and where we feel they need to work out on those aspects during the season. So we filled those folders for them."

Desai was grateful that BCCI arranged for spacious hotel rooms where they could use maximum equipments for weight training during the seven days of hard quarantine.

"We are thankful to BCCI that they gave us this property where there were balcony and outdoor spaces where they were able to move out and work and put good amount of weights in their rooms for them to carry out their training," Desai explained further.

"The idea during those times was to address the areas of their weaknesses and areas which they need to work on. From 7th, 8th and 9th day, there were doing individual training sessions," he informed.

"They (players) just trained alone on their own and it was in the gym, so they had access to treadmills and access to few areas where they could run and do their drills, did some bowling drills," Desai said as the website uploaded a video of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah rolling his arm over with some "hitting the spot" bowling.

"I think we have ticked many boxes and we are in very good space right now," Desai concluded.

New Delhi: India skipper Mithali Raj has welcomed the selection of teen sensation Shafali Verma in all three formats and said it would be crucial to get back to winning ways on the UK tour after the disappointment at home against South Africa.

Robbed of crucial game-time due to the pandemic, India will get the ball rolling with the UK tour comprising a one-off Test, three ODIs and as many T20s.

With the ODI World Cup scheduled in New Zealand early next year, the plans and preparation for 50-over format assumes more significance especially after the loss to South Africa at home.

Big-hitting opener Shafali's exclusion from the ODI squad for the South Africa series became a big talking point. The 17-year-old has established herself as a key player in the shortest format over the last 18 months.

Speaking to PTI, Mithali said Shafali's inclusion in the Test and ODI squad is a big plus and talent like her must be groomed sensibly.

"Having her in three formats definitely is a plus. And we definitely are looking forward to see how she shapes up (in both the formats)," said the Test and ODI skipper hinting at the likely opening combination of Shafali and Smriti Mandhana in the 50-over format besides T20s.

File image of India batter Shafali Verma. Image credit: Twitter/@T20WorldCup

Shafali is among the young blood infused into the Indian team set up with the other 17-year-old being Richa Ghosh.

Mithali feels it is important to give young players the space they need to flourish and be there for them when they are struggling.

"Sharing experience is one thing but allowing the player to do their best, giving them the platform to flourish and gain that knowledge is also equally important.

"You need to give them that space to grow, but at the same time, be around if they have a fall, that is where I think the senior players step in.

"When a young talent falters, you're there to hold them. But it is a journey and they need to find their own feet sometimes," said one of the greats of women's cricket.

The South Africa series was India's first in 12 months and they ended up losing both the ODIs and T20s. With tours of England, Australia and New Zealand lined up before the World Cup, Mithali said it is important they find some momentum in the UK.

"There is no better preparation for World Cup than playing with the best and that is England, Australia, New Zealand.

"We do have certain areas that we want to work on. We are desperately looking forward trying our combinations before the main event.

"The first thing is to returning to winning ways because last series was not great for us. Once you start winning, it takes the team to a different level to sort of get the girls and everybody performing and in a positive frame of mind."

India's traditional strength, their spinners, struggled against South Africa. Mithali said it could be a one-off as they deliver more often than not but focus will be on putting up 250 plus scores consistently.

Only twice in 14 innings they have scored 250-plus batting first.

"If you're competing against the best side, you clearly have to be scoring regularly at the rate at the Australians or the English score at. So that definitely is in our minds," she said.

Former India captain and chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar has criticised the scheduling of India's tour of England, calling it absurd.

India fly to England to play the World Test Championship final against New Zealand from 18 to 22 June and play the first Test against England on 4 August.

In an interview given to News18.com, Vengsarkar pointed out the one and a half month gap between the two games, asking what exactly is Team India planning to do in this long gap, with no practice games announced so far.

He said, "What are they going to do in those one-and-a-half months? I am really surprised with the scheduling. What kind of a tour is being organised? How can you have a Test match now and you don’t have any cricket for one-and-a-half months, and then you play the Test series. Even if Pakistan and Sri Lanka visit England for limited-overs series in July, why can’t they have the England-India Tests immediately after the WTC final? Is the team coming back after the WTC final and then going back? What are they going to do for those one-and-a-half months?

"If there is no cricket for one-and-a-half months, it is strange. If India is there to play Test matches, they should continue playing Tests rather than have a gap. Why have Pakistan and Sri Lanka playing T20Is and ODIs in between? That is absurd."

File image of Dilip Vengsarkar. Reuters

Vengsarkar, who has four Test centuries in England, also advised Indians to get acclimatise to conditions quickly for better results.

"It has got to do with getting acclimatised to the conditions. Spending as much time as possible in the middle is vital. In the olden days, we had the advantage as we used to have more county games before the Test matches and in between Tests. That definitely helped to get used to the conditions."

He added that bio-bubble will be a huge challenge for Team India, who are going to be playing consistent cricket from mid-June till at least T20 World Cup later this year.

The former India captain said, "It is a very big season for the Indian players. It will be tough to stay in the bio-bubble for such a long time. It will definitely take a toll on the players’ mental health because they have to stay in the bio-bubble and also perform at their best all the time.

"...They may have got used to the bio-bubble but it may not be the best for everyone concerned. It is tough, being in a bio-bubble and performing to your best."

Melbourne: Cricket Australia on Monday said it's yet to start discussions on whether Australian cricketers would compete in the IPL when the T20 league re-commences in the UAE in September.

Nick Hockley, who was confirmed as CA chief executive on Monday after performing the duties in an interim role, said a decision on IPL can wait as Australian players were just reunited with their families after completing a two-week hotel quarantine.

Close to 40 Australians, including players, coaches, officials and commentators were part of the IPL bandwagon before the league was halted on May 4 after COVID-19 breached its bio-bubble.

File image of Cricket Australia chief executive Nick Hockley. Image: Twitter @cricketcomau

"Once we get back together as a group that (IPL) is something we'll obviously need to discuss," Hockley was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.

"Our players returning from the IPL have only today come out of quarantine, so our first priority is to make sure they are reunited with their families. We have a tour to prepare for in the West Indies," he added.

Hockley said the players will regroup at the National Cricket Centre (in Brisbane) in a couple of weeks before the West Indies tour and that would be the time to refocus.

"They are clearly quite shaken by the experience, and are very appreciative to be back home, very much looking forward to being reunited with family and friends today."

The IPL will resume in the UAE in mid-September when Australia do not have any international commitment.

However, concerns have been expressed that spending time in bio-bubbles one after another could affect players' mental health.

As of now, the T20 World Cup is scheduled to be held in India and if the tournament is also moved to the UAE like the IPL, the chances of Australian players competing in the league will be more since then they won't have to move to a separate bio-bubble in India.

Australia are scheduled to travel to the West Indies in July and then straight to Bangladesh for a bilateral tour.

New Delhi: The BCCI will ask for one month's extension to decide on hosting the T20 World Cup in India amid the looming COVID-19 threat when the all-powerful ICC Board holds a virtual meeting on Tuesday to discuss a host of other issues as well.

While earlier, it was decided that BCCI president Sourav Ganguly will attend the meet in person, it is learnt that now he will be present virtually and will only leave for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Wednesday to have discussions on the organisation of IPL with Emirates Cricket Board.

There are no concrete outcomes expected at the meeting and after 1 July, the BCCI will hold another SGM. The ICC is likely to make a formal announcement of its final decision during its annual conference that starts on 18 July.

While the remainder of the IPL has been shifted to the UAE between 15 September to 15 October, the Indian cricket board doesn't want to let go the opportunity of hosting the global T20 event, which also has Emirates as back-up hosts.

"The COVID-19 cases are reducing but obviously it is still not a situation where we can firmly commit to hosting the World T20. Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah are right in asking for one month's time to decide," a senior BCCI source privy to developments told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"Obviously, they will also get a feedback from the government whether it would be prudent to host it in India.

"The second aspect is that you never know when the cases rise again. Right now, the lockdown in various parts of the country is yielding some good results but as we had seen the sudden surge during IPL, the situation remains fluid," he said.

However, one thing is clear that even if BCCI manages to host the tournament between the third week of October and second week of November, there is no question of nine cities being allotted games.

"If BCCI manages to host the tournament in October-November which is currently a 50-50 probability, it could well mean single city three venues in Mumbai along with Pune and Ahmedabad as venue for the final.

"This curtails travel. But Pakistan team playing in Maharashtra and Gujarat also needs to be factored in," the source said.

Tax issues

The other issue that BCCI is facing currently is tax waiver that ICC gets for its global events. It is understood that while BCCI is in discussion with the top government functionaries, there are no easy solutions.

If BCCI can't arrange the tax waiver from the government, it will have to forego ICC revenue to the tune of USD 125 million (INR 905 crore approx).

File image of BCCI logo. AFP

"In this post pandemic world and a hostile economic climate which is pretty hostile, the Indian government providing a tax relief close to Rs 1000 crore for a cricket event seems like wishful thinking," the source said.

"But then if BCCI can pull it off, good for them. In any case, we are not likely to give up on our hosting rights even if it is held in the UAE," the BCCI source added.

FTP Cycle 2023-31

The Futures Tours & Programme Cycle for the next eight years between 2023 to 2031 will also be discussed with provision for the flagship ICC events apart from the bilateral series.

"Obviously due to the pandemic, every cricket board has lost money and the bilateral events are the way forward to recover the costs. In any case, currently rested ICC CEO Manu Sawhney's proposal of a marquee ICC event every year was red flagged by the ''Big Three'' much earlier.

"They need to look after the financial health of their boards," the official further added.

Also the future of the World Test Championship will also be discussed after a much curtailed first edition due to the pandemic.

ICC chairman Greg Barclay, a few months back, had expressed his apprehensions about the future of the tournament but a lot of people believe that its prospects can't be judged in a year where there was a global crisis.

Global Strategy going forward

The ICC will also discuss a strategy for the global growth of the game with special emphasis on women's cricket.

India's participation in the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games has given ICC a big boost along with BCCI's in-principle approval to take part in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The ICC board wants to spread the game equally in 104 countries.

"Women's game is the next big thing and T20 is a tool to popularise women's game globally," the board source said.

Mumbai: In the form of a heartfelt note, India's star batter Jemimah Rodrigues has thanked the previous generation of women cricketers who laid the foundation for the team that it has become today.

Jemimah wrote the note after the unveiling of the team's white jersey for India's upcoming tour of England, where Mithali Raj and Co are playing a Test match after seven years.

The jerseys were handed out to the team in Mumbai, where the players are currently in quarantine.

The 20-year-old Jemimah said during the event head coach Ramesh Powar showed the squad the legacy of the Indian women's cricket team.

"So today (coach) Ramesh (Powar) sir called us for a team meeting and showed us the history we have of women's cricket in India -- from where it first started to where it has reached today... The one's who were before us that made it possible for us to be a part of what we are today," Jemimah said in an Instagram post.

"The one's who did it without the recognition they deserved, the one's who brought women's cricket in India."

The jovial player also said veteran cricketers Jhulan Goswami and Mithali Raj shared their experiences of being part of the squad for a long time.

"Then the two legends of Indian women's cricket Mithu di and Jhulu di came up and shared with the entire team what cricket has meant to them and what it's like being a part of this Legacy."

Jemimah hoped that they are able to leave the team in a better place for the future generation of players.

"The meeting ended off with this beautiful quote. Our greatest responsibility is to honour those who have been before us and those who will come after, to 'leave the JERSEY in a better place'.

"This series (tour of England) and the series here forth, we are playing for a far bigger cause than what we realise, we are playing for every single girl who desires to play this sport," she concluded.

After the one-off Test, India and England will lock horns in three ODIs beginning June 27 with the matches slated to be played at Bristol, Taunton and Worcester.

India and England will then square off in three T20Is, beginning 9 July, in Northampton, Hove, and Chelmsford.

London: New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson says leaving the IPL amid the raging pandemic in India was an "interesting" experience but he remained confident that the "good people" around him would ensure a safe passage to England for his first UK tour.

Kyle Jamieson plays for RCB in the IPL. The tournament was suspended after multiple cases of COVID-19 were found in its bio-bubble. Sportzpics

Jamieson, along with New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, chose to fly to Maldives from Delhi before they were to take a flight to the UK as they felt unsafe in India's national capital, then the hotspot of COVID-19 in the country.

"It was an interesting one. It is not something that you could plan for. We were sort of informed right through. We had some pretty good people around us, the BCCI and IPL teams," said Jamieson in a media interaction on Sunday.

The lanky pacer plays for RCB in the IPL. The tournament was suspended after multiple cases of COVID-19 were found in its bio-bubble.

"We just had to do the right thing by ourselves. Obviously the situation in India was pretty dire and we were mindful of that what is going outside our bubble. Once it (the virus) got inside it was the right decision to postpone it.

"We just had to keep trusting in those people and control we can control and we had some pretty good people around us to help us get to England."

Jamieson is excited about his maiden UK tour which begins with the first Test against England at Lord's before culminating with the World Test Championship final against India, which is scheduled to be held from 18-22 June.

Asked if it is hard not to have one eye on the  WTC final before the two Tests against England, Jamieson said: "Not really at all. If you look too far ahead you can get caught in the bounce a little but.

"It is my first trip to England. I am playing cricket for first time at Lord's. If I get distracted by something in two three weeks time then I would end up not being in great shape.

"I am just trying to be as mindful as I can around this Test and enjoy. Who knows if it ever happens again for me. So just focusing on this Test and Edgbaston and then the final (against India). It is not going to go away or come any closer so I will take care of this one first."

The IPL will resume in September in the UAE. Asked if he would be available for that, Jamieson added: "To be fair I have no idea really. That news came out couple of days ago, we have not had any conversation about it. Our mind is on the Test gainst England and the final against India. Don't want to look too far ahead."

Melbourne: Cricket Australia on Monday appointed Nick Hockley as its new chief executive officer almost a year after he was recruited on an interim basis, during which he oversaw the conduct of the high-profile tour by India amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Besides the India tour of Australia, he was also in charge of successfully delivering the domestic competitions in a complex situation brought about by the global health crisis, which badly affected CA's original cricket calendar.

CA said Hockley has served with distinction as its interim CEO since his appointment last June after the departure of Kevin Roberts.

Wiser after his experience as the cricket body's acting CEO, Hockley is hoping to build on the momentum.

File image of Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley. AFP

"I am under no illusion about the importance of cricket to the lives of so many Australians, nor the magnitude and responsibility of this role," Hockley said in a release issued by CA.

"Leading Cricket Australia is the greatest privilege of my working life and I am committed to doing all I can to making a positive contribution to the game and the community."

Raised in Birmingham, Hockley held senior positions in the organising committee of the ICC Cricket World Cup in Australia in 2015 and 2012 London Olympics and Paralympic Games.

"Over the past 12 months, I have learnt first-hand about the breadth, scale and importance of the role. My approach has been and will continue to be to bring people across the game together, as I believe this is fundamental to achieving our full potential.

"I look forward to building on this momentum and playing my role in deepening those relationships further, as well as playing a leading role in growing the game internationally alongside fellow ICC members."

Hockey was born in the UK and represented England in rugby at student level before relocating to Australia between 2002 and 2005 to pursue a career in corporate finance.

"The change and complexity brought about by Covid-19 has created lots of challenges, but also plenty of opportunities," Hockley said.

"By working together with our partners across the game, I feel confident and optimistic about cricket's ability to rise to the challenges of the modern world and thrive."

CA chairman Earl Eddings congratulated Hockley on his unanimous appointment.

"From delivering the historic T20 Women's World Cup to ensuring a safe and successful 2020-21 season, Nick has already proven himself to be in the very top echelon of sports administrators both in Australia and around the world."

That Hockley was dealing with a host of complex issues was not lost on Eddings.

"...through his leadership, resolve, worth ethic and vision for the game, Australian Cricket emerged stronger than ever. For that, Nick deserves enormous credit," he said.

Sydney: Australian cricketers who fled COVID-ravaged India when the IPL was suspended earlier in May were released from quarantine in Sydney on Monday, after spending 14 days isolating in hotel rooms.

File image of SRH's David Warner. Sportzpics

Steve Smith, David Warner and Pat Cummins were among the players, coaches and officials who completed the mandatory quarantine period after returning on a charter flight from the Maldives.

Warner posted videos on his Instagram account that showed him reuniting with his daughters, before adding a clip of the ocean captioned "It's great to be home".

Fast bowler Jason Behrendorff told public broadcaster ABC it was "nice to have some fresh air" after leaving quarantine.

"It's always tough being stuck somewhere, and knowing that we're able to get home was a relief, and now we're out of quarantine, I can't wait to get home and see my family," he said.

The 38-strong group had been evacuated from India after the Indian Premier League, the world's richest cricket tournament, was suspended on 4 May as coronavirus cases surged in the country.

They spent about 10 days in the Maldives before the Australian government lifted a temporary ban on citizens who had been in India from travelling home.

The IPL started in early April, with the decision to go ahead in the face of a deepening health crisis prompting criticism from some observers, while others defended it as a welcome distraction for the embattled Indian public.

The BCCI announced on Saturday that the tournament, which had completed around half its fixtures, will be played to a conclusion in the United Arab Emirates in September and October.

London: Ollie Robinson said Sunday he will bring an "extra edge" to the England pace attack if he is handed his Test debut in the first Test against New Zealand.

Sussex bowler Robinson is one of county cricket's most prolific performers, with 279 First-Class wickets at an average of 21.04, and the 27-year-old is no stranger to the international set-up having spent long stretches working with the Test squad over the past year.

However, he is closer than ever to a Test debut on Wednesday due to injury ruling out his county team-mate Jofra Archer, while others have been rested.

"As soon as I cross the white line, there's a different edge to me which people might not have seen from county cricket," said Robinson.

File image of Surrey pacer Ollie Robinson. Image credit: Twitter/@ICC

"I will be getting in New Zealand's faces and trying to gee the boys up a bit.

"Just bringing that little extra edge hopefully next week and I'll be going fairly hard.

"I call it 'white line fever' where I'm a changed character when I go on the field."

Robinson may lack the pace of rivals for the bowling spots on Wednesday such as Mark Wood and Olly Stone but he believes he has other facets to his game.

"I've just got to back my skill and back my ability," he said.

"There's people that have averaged 21 in Test cricket who bowl slower than I do.

"I'll use all my attributes — my height, my skill — and hopefully it'll stand me in good stead."

One quality Robinson is renowned for is the homework he does on opposing batting line-ups.

He has shown the same application to that as he has in turning round his career after being sacked by Yorkshire aged 20 in 2014 due to off-pitch issues.

Indeed Jason Gillespie who was in charge of Yorkshire at the time was then reunited with him at Sussex and the former Australian paceman has been singing his praises at how he has progressed.

Robinson, though, only has his eyes on the New Zealand top order especially captain Kane Williamson.

"I won't reveal too much yet but I have done quite a lot of research on their top four especially," he added.

"Williamson is obviously the main one.

"It looks like swinging it away from him, setting him up, pulling him across the crease and then using the crease with the nip backer to get him looks like a solid option."

Karachi: Former skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed was among 11 players and officials who were on Sunday denied clearance to board commercial flights to Abu Dhabi, which will host the remaining games of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in June.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has been facing logistical issues, including getting visas and permissions to land charter flights from Mumbai and Johannesburg ahead of the PSL which will resume in Abu Dhabi following a postponement in March this year.

"As many as 11 players and officials on their way to the PSL, including the Quetta Gladiators captain Sarfaraz Ahmed, were not allowed to board commercial flights going from Lahore and Karachi to Abu Dhabi via Doha early morning on Sunday," ESPNcricinfo reported.

"Five persons from this PSL contingent were cleared to fly, while the others had to return to their hotels where they have been in quarantine since May 24."

File image of Quetta Gladiators captain Sarfaraz Ahmed. AFP

According to the report, "...a batch of more than 25 individuals from both cities was supposed to travel to the UAE on a chartered plane.

"But the PCB, in a late decision, instead opted to put them on commercial flights, which nullified the quarantine protocols already in place."

On Thursday, two charter flights carrying around 250 players, officials, PCB employees and official broadcasters and their staff landed in Abu Dhabi from Karachi and Lahore.

The Board had also got the permission from UAE authorities to land its charter flights from Mumbai and Johannesburg carrying members of the broadcasting crew, players and officials.

The PCB had faced a long delay getting visas for the Indian and South African broadcasting crew members, an issue which was resolved on Thursday.

But according to the report, "...there remain multiple individuals, including the franchise support staff, who are yet to get UAE visas though."

The league is tentatively scheduled from 5 June but the Board is yet to come up with fixtures. The window of hosting the event is small as Pakistan will have to leave for England on 22 June for a limited-overs series.

The PSL 6 was postponed in early March in Karachi due to rising COVID-19 cases among players and officials with just 14 matches completed at that time.

Sydney: Kolkata Knight Riders pacer Pat Cummins is set to miss the UAE-leg of the IPL and Cricket Australia needs to make a call if it is prudent to let other Australian players compete in the league and spend more time in mentally tough bio-bubble.

File image of Pat Cummins. Sportzpics

The BCCI on Saturday approved IPL's resumption in September in the UAE. The organisers were forced to suspend the league earlier in May after multiple cases of COVID-19 were reported inside the bio-bubble.

"Cummins, despite a multi-million dollar IPL contract, has already said he will not return to the T20 tournament this season," a report in the Sydney Morning Herald said.

Cricket Australia will have to factor in the workload and bio-bubble fatigue ahead of the T20 World Cup, scheduled to take place in India in October-November.

The Australian players had to serve a quarantine period upon their arrival back home via Maldives from India due to travel restrictions in the country in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.

"CA will need to decide whether it's in the best mental health interests of its players to spend even more time in a bio-secure bubble," the report said.

"CA could decide the IPL will ensure players are fine-tuned for the World Cup, which could also be held in the UAE," the report added.

ECB's Director of Cricket Ashley Giles has already said due to a busy international schedule from June onwards, the English players are unlikely to be available for the remainder of the tournament.

Australia have a tour of West Indies scheduled from late June ahead of the T20 World Cup, followed by a Test against Afghanistan and the Ashes series.

"The Australians could also have a short tour of Bangladesh in August but that has not been confirmed. However, the Bangladesh board is planning for five Twenty20 matches."

The currently-suspended IPL saw participation from over 40 Australian cricketers, support staff and broadcasters.

The IPL, which was held in the UAE last season, has 31 matches remaining.

Ravindra Jadeja has established himself as one of the key players for the Indian team across all three formats but there was a time when things weren't going well for him, leading to many "sleepless nights".

India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja revealed he had sleepless nights for more than a year after getting dropped from Team India's limited-overs squad post the Champions Trophy loss in 2017.

It was only after the Oval Test in 2018 that things began to change for him. He had slammed a hundred in that Test under tough circumstances and conditions and began his journey to become a better player, slowly finding his way back into the limited-overs team as well.

In an interview to Indian Express, he spoke about those tough days, "I couldn’t sleep. I would be lying down but jaaga hi rehta tha (was awake only). I was in the Test squad but not playing as we played a lot overseas. I wasn’t playing ODIs.

"I wasn’t playing domestic too as I would be travelling with the Indian team though not playing. I wasn’t getting any opportunity to prove myself. I would keep thinking about how I am going to come back," he said.

File image of Ravindra Jadeja. AP

Jadeja credits the Oval Test performance for helping him bounce back.

"That Test changed everything for me. Poora (complete) game. My performance, my confidence, everything. When you score in English conditions against the best bowling attack, it greatly impacts your confidence," he said.

In the last couple of years, Jadeja has also worked hard on his batting and the effort was there to be seen in IPL 2020 where he struck the balls with a Strike Rate (SR) of over 170. In the previous years, his SR used to be around 120.

On what changes he made to bring power in his batting, he said, "I improved my training methods as I realised in T20 I needed power apart from the timing. Timing comes in handy when you are not in a rush for runs, like in Tests. I increased my training before that season, worked a lot on overall strength, upper body, and shoulder."

Cape Town: New Test skipper Dean Elgar has called for a return to the "South African" way of playing cricket, which is punctuated by consistent performances, big centuries and five-wicket hauls, as the Proteas look to open a "new chapter" after a prolonged lean phase.

South Africa head to the Caribbean for a two-match red-ball series against the West Indies, starting 10 June.

"Now that we are in a new chapter, we need to play more cricket and better cricket," Elgar told reporters on Saturday, ahead of the team's departure for St Lucia.

"We are conscious that over the last period we haven't been very consistent.

"Our skill level hasn't been where it should be. We need to get back to a bit more of a consistent nature of cricket; a bit more of a South African way," Elgar added.

Since Mark Boucher took over as coach in 2019, the Proteas have played just eight Tests — largely due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions — losing five of them.

Dean Elgar (right) has taken over as captain of South Africa's Test team. AP

Once a formidable force, South Africa have slipped to the seventh spot in the ICC Test rankings.

"We've always had a batting line-up that has scored heavily. And fast bowlers. That's the South African way.

"We need to get back to scoring big hundreds and taking five-fors like it used to be.

"I feel like we can get the Proteas brand back to where it was a few years before. That will be my biggest goal. I know it's going to be hard work," Elgar said.

The 33-year-old feels it will be challenging to get the players to trust the process and adapt to it quickly.

"It's trying to change players' mindsets; to try and get that buy-in from every individual and to try and get them to trust your process going forward.

"One of the more challenging aspects of the job will be to try and get the trust of the players so that they can trust the process, to believe in the process and to do it quickly and adapt quickly. It's something I believe very strongly in."

South Africa are set to arrive in St Lucia on Tuesday where they will serve a three-day quarantine.

After returning two negative COVID-19 tests, they will be allowed to train from the fourth day but will remain limited to their rooms and will be able to make use of all the hotel's facilities after seven days.

New Delhi: The BCCI are trying to convince Cricket West Indies to advance the start of the Caribbean Premier League by a week or 10 days to ensure a seamless bubble-to-bubble transfer of players for the IPL's resumption in the UAE come September.

File image of BCCI logo. AFP

Suspended midway into its 14th season owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the BCCI on Saturday approved the resumption of the lucrative Indian Premier League in the UAE in the middle of September.

The CPL is scheduled to get underway from 28 August with the final to be played on 19 September, while the remaining part of IPL is likely to be held from 18 September to 10 October, not leaving the players with any time to settle down.

"We are in talks with Cricket West Indies. We are hoping that if CPL can be finished a few days in advance, it would help in bubble-to-bubble transfer of all players to Dubai and in time to complete the mandatory three-day quarantine," a BCCI source, privy to the development, told PTI on Sunday.

If the BCCI and CWI fail to reach an agreement over dates, some of the biggest players could miss the initial few matches or may be the first half of the IPL.

The big names involved in both the T20 leagues are Mumbai Indians' five-time IPL-winning influential all-rounder Kieron Pollard, the swashbuckling Chris Gayle, seasoned all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder, Nicholas Pooran, Fabien Allen, Keemo Paul, Sunil Narine and Trinidad and Tobago coach Brendon McCullum, who is also at the helm of affairs in Kolkata Knight Riders.

The upcoming edition will be the CPL's ninth season and will feature some of the format's biggest superstars from across the world.

The IPL's resumption was approved during the BCCI's SGM on Saturday, less than a month after the league was suspended because of COVID-19 cases in its bio-bubble.

Gros Islet (St. Lucia): The West Indies Test squad has returned to full training at its preparatory camp ahead of the home series against South Africa after all players turned out negative for COVID-19 in the latest round of testing.

The 30-member squad trained in two groups on Friday and Saturday after testing conducted Thursday reported no positive cases.

The squad had been forced to train in smaller groups after Jamaican speedster Marquino Mindley tested positive for COVID-19 last week.

"Mindley, who has already returned one negative PCR test on Thursday, remains asymptomatic and in isolation at the team hotel," Cricket West Indies said in a statement on Saturday.

File image of West Indies players. AFP

"The CWI medical team continues to monitor his progress, as he requires one more negative PCR test before being allowed to re-join the squad."

Head coach Phil Simmons said he will now fine tune his squad's preparation ahead of the series against South Africa.

"I am happy that we are back to full training. We are happy with the preparations up to this point and everyone is fully aware of what is required," Simmons said.

West Indies had defeated Bangladesh 2-0 away in February before drawing 0-0 against Sri Lanka in March.

The former all-rounder called for consistency from the players who have fared well in recent series.

"Yes, we had four good Test matches (against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka), but at the same time, people need to know that their position is not guaranteed unless they continue play well.

"Guys who are out, need to show that they want to get back in by doing well in these games. So, it is a benefit to every one of us," Simmons added.

The West Indies red-ball training camp is being held in a bio-secure environment ahead of the ICC World Test Championship two-match series against South Africa, scheduled to start on June 10 at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground.

These fixtures are the final matches in the current cycle of the ICC World Test Championship. The Proteas are due to arrive here on Tuesday.

The West Indies players are set ot play a "Best v Best" four-day match, beginning on Monday.

West Indies have a busy summer schedule, which includes visits from South Africa, Australia and Pakistan before the Caribbean Premier League in late August.

London: New Zealand fast bowler Neil Wagner feels the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) final against India is like a World Cup title clash for him as he has never played a white-ball game for his country.

The inaugural WTC final is scheduled to be held in Southampton from 18-22 June.

"Yeah, it is like a World Cup final for me. The biggest disappointment, I guess, in my career is that I've never really played a white-ball game for New Zealand or never been able to crack into the T20 or the one-day game," Wagner was quoted as saying in ESPNcricinfo.

"That ship has probably sailed now and I don't think the opportunity will ever come. For me now, it's about putting all my focus and energy into Test cricket and to be able to play in a World Test Championship final is like a World Cup for me," the 35-year-old added.

Neil Wagner (second from right) will play a key role in NZ's attempt at clinching the maiden world Test title. AFP

In March, India's leading off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin spoke on similar lines, saying the WTC final will be like a World Cup final for a lot of players who have not often featured in limited overs cricket.

The New Zealanders are already in England, preparing for a two-match Test series against the hosts and though he is excitedly looking forward to play in the WTC final, Wagner said he would not like to let the occasion get the better of him.

"I know this final is the first and there isn't a lot of history around it, but it's the start of something that's pretty big.

"To play in a one-off Test final against India - one of the best teams in the world, if not the best team in the world - to be able to test yourself against the best on the highest and biggest stage, that's what it's about.

"It's extremely exciting, but I don't want to think too far ahead. Don't want to let the occasion get to you, just treat it like another Test match and do the same things you do. It's definitely going to be a special occasion. That's for sure," the Kiwi said.

Wagner battled through the pain of two broken toes in the first Test against Pakistan last December, playing an instrumental role in a memorable win for the home team at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.

He needed pain-killing injections during the Test, which the hosts won by 101 runs, after he was struck on the foot while batting on the second day.

"Yeah, it's a tough one. (It was) sort of in the moment and I guess adrenaline and playing for the team -- wearing the black cap is the ultimate drive and it obviously motivates you to go through that.

"It's (also) just everyone else around you encouraging you to do something like that, and trying to bite through as much pain as I could to try and deliver a job. Luckily it came off," Wagner, who is a bit scared of needles, said.

If his heroics at Bay Oval was any evidence, Wagner has a penchant to deliver in trying conditions, and he said he prides himself in playing a role when the going gets tough.

"Test cricket is tough and it's never easy playing in different parts of the world, where it can be challenging.

"You get to test your skills and ability against the best players in the toughest situations. That's where you want to stand up and make some sort of impact, and I pride myself in playing a role when things are tough. I want to put my hand up and have the ball in my hand," he said.

London: Closing in on becoming England's most-capped Test cricketer, veteran seamer James Anderson says players might be rotated more in the marquee five-match series against India later this summer since the games will be taking place in quick succession.

James Anderson is looking forward to playing all Tests this summer, including the five against India and two versus New Zealand prior to that. Sportzpics

The pacer, who is the world's highest Test wicket-taker among fast bowlers with 614 scalps from 160 matches, will turn 39 in July.

Speaking about the England & Wales Cricket Board's (ECB) much-debated rotation policy, he said, "The five Tests against India might be a different story with back-to-backs in quite quick succession. That might be where people get rotated a bit more."

England will play the Kiwis in two Tests starting on 2 June and then host India in a big-ticket five-match series later in the second half of the English summer.

"The rotation in the winter was completely understandable with the amount of cricket we had and the amount of time in bubbles that we were spending," Anderson was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

"It's going to be slightly different this summer. If everything goes well, I think it will start to get relaxed. We won't be in the sort of bubble life that we've experienced in the last 12 months. So, there might be not as much reason to rest people."

Anderson is looking forward to playing all Tests this summer, including the five against India and two versus New Zealand prior to that.

"Yes. I'd love to play all seven Tests this summer. There are five Tests against India after these two Tests against New Zealand, and then the Ashes after that. So, we want to start this summer well."

He added, "So hopefully, if we do pick our strongest team we (Anderson and Stuart Broad) would like to think that we're both in that. And we'd love to share the new ball together, yes."

"Stuart and I have sent a few texts to each other saying it'd be nice if we did get to play together. Obviously, it's completely down to the coach and captain.

"But I think, from the team's point of view, we want to get some momentum going into a big summer," he said.

Besides standing on the verge of becoming England's most-capped Test player, Anderson is also eight shy of completing 1000 wickets in first-class cricket.

He calls the numbers mind-blowing.

"1,000 wickets does seem like a lot," he said.

"In this day and age, I don't know if it's possible to get that many first-class wickets any more. With the amount of cricket that's played, there doesn't seem to be that longevity in bowlers any more, and there's loads of T20 cricket and whatever else going on around the world. It feels a lot."

Regarding equalling former skipper Alastair Cook's record of most Test appearances, Anderson said he is proud of it but never imagined he would get there in million years.

"I never imagined in a million years I'd get to this point. Certainly for a bowler to play this amount of games is... I don't know what the word is. But it's a bit mind-blowing to me.

"I feel really honoured that I've managed to do it because it's such an amazing thing to do. I absolutely love Test cricket. I've got a huge passion for it. Growing up, all I wanted to do is play Test cricket for England and I'm honoured I've been able to do it for this long."

New Delhi: The Indian women's cricket squad, which will be travelling to the United Kingdom along with the men's team for their month-long series, will also undergo their hard quarantine in Southampton instead of Bristol where they are supposed to play their one-off Test match.

Both the Indian teams are awaiting their complete quarantine routine from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). The ICC on Saturday did send a media release but it didn't have any specific details about the duration of hard and soft quarantine.

"The Indian women's contingent is not moving to Bristol on landing. Instead, they will also be going to Southampton with the men's team and start their room quarantine. With ECB yet to send us the routine that we need to follow, the women's team will only leave for Bristol once the quarantine period in Southampton is over," a senior BCCI official privy to travel details told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Both the teams will be putting up at the Hilton Hotel, which is a part of the Hampshire Bowl Stadium property.

"We need to plan our training schedule and for that intimation about the duration of hard and soft quarantine period is very important. It is the ECB which will handover a complete chart starting from day one of our managed isolation," the official said.

It is expected that the women's team will be putting up at the same hotel which is adjacent to the County ground in Bristol to ensure a safe bio-secure zone for the squad.

The women's team will play their one-off Test from June 16-19 which also overlaps, for a couple of days, with the men's World Test Championship final against New Zealand to be played at the Hampshire Bowl starting 18 June.

Kohli, Sharma to start their gym session from Sunday.

India captain Virat Kohli and his white ball deputy Rohit Sharma will end their seven-day hard quarantine in India on Sunday and are expected to hit the gym for a full workout.

"Tomorrow their seven-day hard quarantine ends. They can now do their sessions for the next three days before departure. If you come to think of it, despite the team's hard quarantine in India and six negative RT-PCR test, it will have to undergo another round of hard isolation on reaching UK. But these are tough times and you have to adapt accordingly," the official added.

Dubai: Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has been fined 15 percent of his match fee for using obscene language during the third ODI of the World Cup Super League series against Sri Lanka in Dhaka.

According to a release issued by the ICC, Tamim was found to have breached Article 2.3 of the ICC Code of Conduct for players and player support personnel, which relates to "use of an audible obscenity during an International Match."

In addition to the fine, one demerit point has been added to the disciplinary record of Tamim, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period.

The incident occurred in the 10th over of Bangladesh's innings on Friday, when Tamim used inappropriate language after an unsuccessful review of his caught-behind dismissal.

Tamim admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by ICC match referee Neeyamur Rashid, and there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and Tanvir Ahmed, third umpire Gazi Sohel and fourth official Masudur Rahman levelled the charge against Tamim.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player's match fee, and one or two demerit points.

Southampton: After acclimatising to the conditions in Southampton which will host the World Test Championship (WTC) final against India next month, the New Zealand team travels to London for the two-match series against England.

The Blackcaps are scheduled to play England in two Tests, in London and Birmingham, starting 2 June, following which they will face India in the WTC final from 18-22 June at the Rose Bowl here.

"The New Zealand team travels to London today," New Zealand Cricket(NZC) wrote on its official Twitter handle on Saturday.

As part of their preparation for the WTC final, the Kiwis played a three-day team intra-squad game here.

The ICC on Friday unveiled the playing conditions for the WTC final. Both teams will be adjudged joint winners if their final clash ends in a draw or tie.

The global governing body has also allocated 23 June as a reserve day to make up for any lost time during the regular days of the final.

Dubai: The Indian team will stay in "managed isolation" before the World Test Championship final against New Zealand, the ICC announced on Saturday but did not mention the exact period of hard quarantine upon reaching UK.

The world's top two Test teams will fight it out at the Hampshire Bowl in Southampton from 18-22 June.

The Indian cricket team. AFP

While New Zealand are already in England for a bilateral series against the hosts, the Virat Kohli-led Indian team will arrive in the UK on 3 June after completing a 14-day quarantine period in India

"The event has now been granted an exemption by the UK government as outlined in The Health Protection (Coronavirus, International Travel and Operator Liability) (England) Regulations 2021, released on 17 May 2021," the ICC said in a release.

"....Upon landing, they will proceed directly to the on-site hotel at the Hampshire Bowl where they will be tested again before commencing a period of managed isolation," said the ICC release.

However, the ICC release doesn't specify the duration of hard (room) quarantine in Southampton. For the New Zealand team, ECB made it a three-day mandatory room quarantine before allowing the players to train.

Regular tests will be conducted during the period of isolation.

The Indian team will enter UK after completing 14-days in a bio-bubble in Mumbai with six RT-PCR negative tests.

Some of the players like R Ashwin, Mayank Agarwal, Washington Sundar are now allowed to use the hotel gymnasium from 25 May after a week-long room quarantine and three negative tests.

However, a few like skipper Virat Kohli, his white ball deputy Rohit Sharma, all of whom joined late will have a complete room quarantine before boarding the UK flight. They have been provided with gym equipments inside their rooms.

In the UK, players' activity will be allowed in a gradually increasing manner after each round of negative testing, moving from exercise in isolation to small group and then larger squad activity, whilst always remaining within the bio-secure venue.

The New Zealand team will move from the ECB bio-secure environment into the World Test Championship Final bubble on 15 June and will be subject to regular testing prior to and post arrival in Southampton.

The general body of the BCCI on Saturday approved the IPL's resumption in September in the UAE and also decided to seek one month's time from the ICC to assess the COVID-19 situation in India before taking a final call on the ICC T20 World Cup.

The Special General Meeting (SGM), held virtually, lasted for about 50 minutes as the members were unanimous in their approval of the two agendas on the day.

"The SGM approved the decision to hold the remaining matches of IPL between September and October. The dates will be intimated later," a senior state association member, who was present in the meeting, told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"In September, it's the time for retreating monsoon in India. Also the fact that three grounds in the UAE makes it easier as we had seen in 2020."

The likely dates will be between 18 September and 10 October.

He said all the members want the T20 World Cup to be held in India in last week of October but no decision can be taken right now.

"The BCCI representatives — president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah — will be seeking time till July 1 after which another SGM will be held to decide on whether we would go ahead with hosting of World T20.

"Right now, the health situation in the country doesn''t allow us to take any final decision."

In a short statement, the BCCI said all the members unanimously agreed to resume IPL in the UAE.

"The BCCI on Saturday announced to complete the remaining matches of VIVO Indian Premier League 2021 season in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) considering the monsoon season in India in the months of September-October this year.

"The BCCI SGM further authorised the Office Bearers to seek an extension of time from the ICC to take an appropriate call on the hosting of ICC T20 World Cup 2021," secretary Jay Shah said in the statement.

The senior state association member said there is also a tax rebate issue which is still an ongoing process.

"ICC wants tax waivers but we have to abide by government guidelines. But a World T20 in India means that all the stakeholders happen to gain. But sitting in May, you can't predict the health emergency in October. So we need some time," he said.

While IPL's UAE shift was a foregone conclusion, the office bearers intimated the general body about the issue of availability of players.

"The BCCI is pretty clear that even if there is a case of unavailability of English players due to their series against Pakistan, we are not going to plead to any of the boards about releasing their players.

"The first and foremost thing is to complete the 31 remaining games of IPL. We believe other aspects will be taken care of," he added.

Domestic players' compensation

One member from a state association had informally raised the issue but he was told in no uncertain terms that this is not the appropriate forum as SGM needs to be held as per agenda.

"The compensation thing has already been passed at the AGM last January. Yes, they haven't worked out a formula and trust me it's not the easiest thing. Dada (Sourav Ganguly) has got approval for compensation but what's the formula?

"Today, if a state gives contract to 20 players, which is a standard upper limit, there will be five who may just move court and say that this year they were supposed to be selected? These are things that the Board needs to sort out," an official of a heavyweight state said.

Ganguly, Shah going to Dubai on Monday

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah will join vice president Rajiv Shukla in Dubai for the ICC Board Meeting on 1 June where there will be discussions on the fate of the T20 World Cup in India in october.

"As they will ask for one month's time, the best option for BCCI is to hold it in Maharashtra — three grounds in Mumbai and one in Pune. However, the issue of Pakistan travelling to Mumbai could be more of a political decision where the security will also need to be factored in,'' the official said.

The remainder of the Indian Premier League 2021 will be conducted in the UAE in the months of September and October, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Saturday.

The IPL 2021 was indefinitely suspended on 4 May after multiple players and staff had tested positive for COVID-19 amidst the second wave in India.

The decision to conduct the tournament in the UAE was taken at the BCCI SGM which was held virtually on Saturday where the members unanimously agreed to resume the tournament.

"The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday announced to complete the remaining matches of VIVO Indian Premier League 2021 season in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) considering the monsoon season in India in the months of September-October this year," the BCCI said in a press release.

The BCCI also authorised the Office Bearers to seek an extension of time from the ICC to take an appropriate call on the hosting of ICC T20 World Cup 2021, the release said.

Mumbai: Young India batswoman Jemimah Rodrigues will play for Northern Superchargers in the inaugural edition of The Hundred in the UK starting on 21 July.

The 20-year-old joins her T20I skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, opener Shafali Verma and all-rounder Deepti Sharma in the 100-ball tournament involving eight men's and women's teams respectively.

"I am really looking forward to it (The Hundred). Something new, something different," Rodrigues told the BBC's 'Stumped' podcast.

"I have played for the Yorkshire Diamonds and my team is the Northern Superchargers. So, I have played a few of them before, Lauren Winfield is our captain," Rodrigues added.

Rodrigues was named in India's squad for the tour of England to play a one-off Test in Bristol from 16 June, followed by three ODIs and as many T20Is.

She is currently part of the ongoing 14-day quarantine here with the rest of the women's team and men's squad.

England World Cup winner Lauren Winfield-Hill is set to lead the Northern Superchargers that also includes top Australian cricketer Alyssa Healy.

Rodrigues, Kaur, Mandhana and Sharma were also a part of the now-defunct Kia Super League (KSL) in 2019, the ECB's domestic T20 tournament that made way for the Women's Hundred.

The Hundred, which was postponed last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is scheduled to start from 21 July with the women's match between the Oval Invincibles and Manchester Originals in London.

London: Seeking inclusivity, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is set to add former fast bowlers Devon Malcolm and Dean Headley to the panel of its match referees.

According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, the two respected former English fast bowlers of African-Caribbean heritage are among the five names added to a "supplementary match referees" panel.

The names are to be announced shortly.

Both Malcolm and Headley have remained involved in the game in coaching roles. Both have retired from active cricket after stellar careers. Malcolm took over 1,000 first-class wickets — 128 of them in Test cricket with a best of 9/57 against South Africa — while Headley grabbed an impressive 60 Test wickets at 27.85 apiece before his career was curtailed by injury.

Headley is expected to officiate in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy next week.

It's a sign of ECB's commitment to diversity, months after former Test umpire John Holder had called for an inquiry following the revelation that the cricket body had not appointed a non-white match official to the first-class list since 1992.

Holder also claimed they had never appointed a non-white Pitch Liaison Officer, Cricket Liaison Officer, Match Referee, Umpires' Mentor or Umpires' Coach, forcing the ECB to acknowledged the grievances and work on "areas where we need to be better and do more to be inclusive and diverse".

The ECB also announced a raft of measures, including a commitment to ensure that a minimum of 15 percent of umpires on the national panel are from a Black and minority ethnic (BAME) background by the end of 2021.

At present, the figure is eight percent.

New Delhi: The BCCI will lock in a three-week window between 15 September and 15 October for the resumption of the currently-suspended IPL in the UAE, when it holds a Special General Meeting (SGM) virtually on Saturday.

The agenda of the meeting is "discussing on the upcoming cricket season in the view of pandemic prevailing in India".

The wider scope of the agenda permits the members to also discuss the ICC T20 World Cup and the much-delayed compensation package for domestic cricketers for the cancelled last Ranji Trophy season.

BCCI also wants to host the T20 World Cup in India and during the 1 June ICC Board meet, it would ask the global body to wait on the COVID-19 situation in India before any call is taken.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly is expected to chair Saturday's meeting from Mumbai. The IPL is expected to restart between 18 and 20 September and end on 10 October with three venues in the UAE, Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah hosting the matches.

"Obviously, the main issue would be the IPL schedule. We are expecting 10 double-headers and seven single headers apart from four play-off games (2 qualifiers, one eliminator) including the final. The resumption game and final will be held on weekends," a senior BCCI official told official told PTI on the eve of the meeting.

It is expected that a lot of deliberations will also happen on how to procure the services of the overseas players and other logistical aspects including bubble-to bubble transfer.

"England Cricket Board director of cricket Ashley Giles has already said that England players won't be allowed to play IPL as they would follow the international commitments ahead of ICC T20 World Cup.

"Hopefully, the president and secretary would tell us how the situation of English players will be handled," a franchise official, who would be tracking the developments, told PTI.

The likes of Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes (if fit), Jofra Archer (if fit), Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Eoin Morgan, Moeen Ali are all first team players for their franchises and getting their replacements won't be easy.

The Indian team's commitments in England end on 14 September with the last day of the final Test in Manchester and it would directly fly to Dubai aboard a charter flight after the series ends.

Only Hanuma Vihari and Abhimanyu Easwaran are expected to go home as they don't have IPL contracts for the time being.

World T20 status

The BCCI, for the time being, will not give up on hosting the T20 World Cup in India but with a third wave of COVID-19 predicted during that time of the year, the chances of the global event being shifted to the UAE are high.

There is a possibility that pitches would tire out but then a full IPL in UAE would have meant 60 games.

So even if World T20 is held, during the final phase of IPL, the ICC could ask the Emirates Cricket Board and the BCCI to at least hand over two of the three grounds for the global event.

One ground would be used for the business end of the tournament.

"If we are not able to hold an eight team IPL in India during September and October, how come we will have foolproof arrangement for a 16-team T20 World Cup in India with nine cities?" a Board official asked.

"The bubble breach in IPL happened only when air travel started. I guess it will take another month or two before we can conclude what's happening," he said.

New Zealand and SA white ball series cancelled

India were supposed to play six white-ball games against South Africa and New Zealand as a pre cursor to the T20 World Cup but with IPL set to be slotted in the September-October window, the series is not expected to be held at that time of the year.

Also, New Zealand are set to play two Tests in India after the T20 World Cup in November and it remains to be seen how the dates of the event are adjusted in order to accommodate the Test series.

Ranji Trophy compensation

Close to 700 senior domestic cricketers (men) have suffered after the cancellation of the Ranji Trophy last season due to the pandemic.

While BCCI had agreed to a compensation package in January last year but the formula to distribute the package is yet to be worked out.

"Only 73 uncapped domestic cricketers currently have IPL contracts. Playing Vijay Hazare and Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy (Rs 35k per match) can't make up for the financial losses that these players suffered," a state unit official said.

"I guess the most feasible solution would be to hand over a lump sum compensation package to the state units and they would accordingly distribute among their players as per their roster from previous season," the senior official said.
