New Delhi: Former India skipper Mohammad Azharuddin feels swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant will be a frontrunner to lead the 'Men in Blue' in future, having established himself across formats in the past few months.

The highly-rated Pant is set to lead the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League this season in the absence of injured regular skipper Shreyas Iyer.

"Rishabh Pant has had such fabulous few months, establishing himself in all formats. It won't come as a surprise if the selectors see him as a front-runner fr Indian captaincy in near future. His attacking cricket will stand India in good stead in times to come. @RishabhPant17 @BCCI," Azharuddin tweeted.

The 23-year-old Pant has dazzled across all three formats in the international season that went by.

He notched up scores of 97 and unbeaten 89 in the third and the fourth Test against Australia to help India clinch the Border Gavaskar Trophy Down Under 2-1.

He continued his rich vein of form in the home Test series against England, playing match-winning knocks for the team. The selectors took note of his consistency and included him in the white-ball squads.

Pant did not disappoint, scoring important half-centuries in the two ODIs he featured in against England.

3rd T20I preview: Bangladesh will aim to salvage some pride as they take on New Zealand in the third and final T20I in Auckland on Thursday. The hosts have already taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.

The pitch is expected to be a belter and with short boundary dimensions in Auckland, fans can expect another high-scoring encounter.

There was plenty of drama in the rain-affected second T20I, which the hosts won by 28 runs via the Duckworth Lewis method. After being asked to bat, New Zealand were 173/5 in the 18th over and looked set to post a big total but rain played spoilsport. The revised winning target for Bangladesh was 170 from 16 overs but the visitors finished with 142/7. Earlier, The Black Caps won the series opener by a convincing margin of 66 runs.

The Kiwis have been dominant in this home season, winning their seventh series across formats.

Squads:

New Zealand: Martin Guptill, Finn Allen, Devon Conway(w), Will Young, Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Daryl Mitchell, Tim Southee(c), Adam Milne, Ish Sodhi, Hamish Bennett, Todd Astle, Lockie Ferguson.

Chennai: Star South African batsman AB de Villiers on Thursday joined the Royal Challengers Bangalore bio-bubble here for the Indian Premier League beginning on 9 April.

The 37-year-old batting great has been a key player for RCB since he joined the franchise in 2011. Since then, he has been playing for the Bengaluru-based franchise.

"The spaceship has landed! AB de Villiers has joined the RCB bubble in Chennai," the RCB tweeted.

De Villiers retired from international cricket in 2018 after playing 114 Tests, 228 ODIs and 78 T20 Internationals.

He scored 8765 Test runs (at an average of 50.66) and 9577 in the ODIs.

Head coach Simon Katich also came out of quarantine, as did pacer Navdeep Saini, as the RCB team underwent another practice session.

The RCB, led by India captain Virat Kohli, began a nine-day conditioning camp on Tuesday.

The team will take on Mumbai Indians in the league's opening clash.

Less than six months on from that enthralling final where Mumbai Indians outclassed Delhi Capitals, the IPL returns to India for its 14th edition.

While we witnessed run fests last season, the bowlers too had their say, with pacers dominating the top four spots of the bowling charts. DC’s Kagiso Rabada (30 wickets) walked away with the Purple Cap after a tough competition with Jasprit Bumrah (27) and Trent Boult (25).

This time, too, one can expect, similar neck-to-neck battles throughout the tournament, both in the batting as well as the bowling departments.

With less than 10 days to go for IPL 2021, we take a look at 10 bowlers to watch out for:

T Natarajan (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

Salem-based Indian pacer T Natarajan has lived through some life-changing moments since he last featured for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in an IPL game. From being a ‘net bowler’ during India’s tour to Australia last year to making his international debut across all three formats that summer Down Under, the 29-year-old has quickly established himself as an exponent of deadly yorkers, which every opposition will be wary of.

T Natarajan picked up 16 wickets from as many games last season. Sportzpics

Not only did he become the first Indian to make his debut across formats in a single tour, but he also cherished it by becoming the highest wicket-taker in the three-match T20Is (six wickets).

A month later, in January, he would go onto make his Test debut in the absence of stars like Jasprit Bumrah and R Ashwin, where he ended up taking three wickets in the first innings.

In fact, he even displayed what he could do under pressure in the recently-concluded third India-England ODI. While he did go for 67 runs in the first nine overs, India, almost running out of bowling options towards the end, called upon ‘Nattu’, as he is fondly referred to, to deal with a rampaging Sam Curran and his partner Reece Topley.

England needed 14 runs off six balls, but Natarajan eventually held on to set-up a nerve-wracking series win.

It is in moments like these that the Hyderabad franchise will need a bowler of Natarajan’s calibre, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if Natarajan, who took 16 wickets in as many games last IPL season, could go all guns blazing once again, on his favourite platform against some of the best big-hitters in the world.

Chris Morris (Rajasthan Royals)

With pace spearhead Jofra Archer ruled out of the first half of IPL 2021, this presents a perfect opportunity for South Africa’s Chris Morris to step up and produce the goods. Morris is an experienced campaigner in the cash-rich league, having played in seven of the last eight seasons, while having picked 80 wickets in 70 games at an economy of 7.81.

And while the 33-year-old did become the most expensive buy in IPL auction history at Rs 16.25 crore this season, Morris recently in a virtual press conference stated that he would be ready for any given role.

"It won't be a new role if I am leading an attack, won't be new if I am supporting. There is a little bit of responsibility when it comes to leading the attack. But like I said it wouldn't be able to be alien to me," he said, while also playing down talks of the price tag pressure.

This could enable Morris to bowl with freedom, and the South African’s experience will come in handy as the Royals look to end their prolonged trophy drought.

Morris’ successful IPL stint came in 2013, where he picked up 15 scalps in 16 matches, and will be looking to emulate that performance come the 14th edition.

Prasidh Krishna (Kolkata Knight Riders)

The last few weeks have been nothing less of a fairytale for 25-year-old Prasidh Krishna, and making his India debut in the ODI format, where he picked up six wickets, will surely act as a confidence-boosting heading into the lucrative tournament.

Krishna recently ended up as the sixth-highest wicket-taker with 14 scalps in the Vijay Hazare One Day Trophy which concluded on 14 March, before getting his maiden international call-up for the three ODIs against England.

He scalped four wickets in the first ODI, ending with figures of 4-54 as India went onto win the match. He eventually surpassed Noel David’s figures of 3/21 (in 1997) to pick up most number of wickets by an Indian on ODI debut.

Thanks to his height of 6 ft 2, Prasidh Krishna’s ability to generate extra-bounce will be a key factor for KKR in the upcoming season.

Krishna’s best season in IPL may have come three years ago in his debut season where he scalped 10 wickets in seven games, but if his current form is to go by, he looks set to be a genuine threat for all teams.

Pat Cummins (Kolkata Knight Riders)

He may not have had the best of seasons despite being bought by KKR for a whopping Rs 15.50 crore during the IPL 2020 auctions, but Pat Cummins has time and again proved that he is a game-changer and a match-winner.

Despite a slow start to his season last time round, Cummins finished on a high, picking six wickets from the last two games (four of them coming in the final game).

Amidst his below-par performance last season, KKR eventually decided to retain the Aussie quick ahead of this year’s auction. And his immense experience will come in handy this time around in the death overs, as the Kolkata franchise aim for their third IPL crown.

For him, personally, he had his second-best economical figures last time round in the tournament (7.86), with his best being 7.25 back in 2014.

He ended the 2020 edition with 12 wickets from 14 matches with best figures of 4/34, while also contributing with the bat throughout the season (409 runs).

Rashid Khan (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

The 22-year-old leg-spinner from Afghanistan needs no introduction, and cricket fans and pundits across the globe are well aware of the damage he could do with the ball.

File image of Rashid Khan. Sportzpics

Rashid Khan only managed to finish sixth on the Purple Cap standings in the IPL last season (20 wickets), with pacers dominating the top four spots, but this time with the tournament being held in India during summer months, Rashid could even compete against the big boys for the Purple Cap.

What stands out for Rashid in the tournament is his economy. He has been miserly in most seasons, with the numbers remaining below 7. While his overall economy in the tournament reads 6.24 (75 wickets from 62 games), he enjoyed his best economical figures in a single season only last time read (Econ: 5.37; 20 wickets from 16 matches).

Rashid Khan is also coming fresh off an excellent couple of T20Is against Zimbabwe, in which he notched up six wickets from two of the three T20Is played.

So, one can expect him to be at his lethal best in largely favourable Indian conditions and give the opposition a tough time.

Shardul Thakur (Chennai Super Kings)

Right-arm medium seamer Shardul Thakur seems to have finally found his rhythm back and will be looking to give his best this season on the back of some brilliant showcasing with the ball against England recently.

Not only did he manage to strike at the right time for India, but also he finished as the highest wicket-taker in both the T20I (8 wickets) and ODI series (7 wickets).

Thakur’s inclusion also gives CSK a variety of bowling options, with the likes of Lungi Ngidi and Josh Hazlewood in the team set-up.

What makes Shardul even more special is his versatility. Leave alone bowling, he would be even able to handle the extra pressure while batting, just as we witnessed in the final India-England ODI.

Trent Boult (Mumbai Indians)

Defending champions Mumbai Indians have once again retained a majority of their core players, and yet again, this gives the cricketing world the chance to witness the deadly pace duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult in the lucrative league.

Trent Boult, along with MI teammate Jasprit Bumrah, were in the running for the Purple Cap only to miss out to DC's Kagiso Rabada. Sportzpics

Although neither managed to win the Purple Cap last time round, with the award eventually going to Delhi Capitals’ Kagiso Rabada, the duo managed to total 52 wickets among them, with Boult claiming 25 of them.

Boult will once again try to make full use of the powerplay overs, as well as attempting to play a crucial part in the death overs.

Following his stupendous performance last season, Boult remains a strong force and will once again be a contender for the Purple Cap.

Jhye Richardson (Punjab Kings)

A bowling all-rounder who can also bat, this will be the Australian Jhye Richardson’s maiden stint in the IPL.

A player with immense experience in the Big Bash League in Australia, Richardson went for Rs 14 crore in the mini-IPL auctions in February, as the bidding war for the 24-year-old between Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore became intense, before eventually being bought by the Anil Kumble-coached side.

His base price was Rs 1.5 crore, but his final price was almost 10 times that amount.

Richardson has been a permanent figure for Perth Scorchers in the BBL, where he has played 53 matches and taken 69 wickets, while also scoring 1496 runs.

Richardson’s presence, in fact, adds more balance and depth to the Kings’ squad, who will be looking for a hassle-free tournament after a few nervy finishes last season.

Kyle Jamieson (RCB)

Much like Richardson, New Zealand’s Kyle Jamieson is yet to experience the high-intensity pressure of playing in the IPL, and much like Richardson, Jamieson too went for big money (Rs 15 crore) to the Royal Challengers Bangalore, having started from a base price of just Rs 75 lakh.

The New Zealander’s career has only gone upwards ever since making his international debut in an ODI in February 2020.

Although he has largely been successful in Tests (36 wickets in six Tests), his ability to create that extra bounce will be beneficial for RCB in the upcoming season.

RCB’s Director of Cricket Mike Hesson, in fact, made things clearer of what Jamieson’s role would be.

"Siraj is exceptional with new ball. He has ability to swing the new ball while Kyle will get that bounce and bring in different challenge. Saini has a little bit more pace and bowls a different length. They will be used in different phases of the game,” Hesson said during a virtual media conference.

Rahul Chahar (MI)

While the recently-concluded series against England did not produce anything much for Mumbai Indians’ Rahul Chahar, the legbreak googly bowler did impress in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy earlier this season, taking 11 wickets from just five games.

Chahar has been a regular figure of the Mumbai Indians since 2019, and while MI have struggled in finding a wicket-taking spinner, Chahar could be the key for them this season.

He has been one of the finds of the IPL, after having just played three games for the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant, Chahar was signed by MI in 2018. And although he did not feature for them that season, he has just risen in form thanks to memorable stints with the champions in the last two seasons (he picked up 13 and 15 wickets in 2019 and 2020).

Australia quick Josh Hazlewood has opted out of the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) just eight days before the scheduled start of the cash-rich tournament. Chennai Super Kings, his franchise, will play their first match on 10 April against Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium.

Hazlewood was set to leave for India with Australia's IPL-bound players today. But having been in bio-secure bubbles from last August 2020 till January 2021, the pacer decided to spend some time with his family. With the Ashes and T20 World Cup in sight, the 30-year-old wanted to keep himself fresh.

"It's been a long 10 months in bubbles and quarantine at different times, so I decided to have a rest from cricket and spend some time at home and in Australia in the next two months. We've got a big winter ahead too. The West Indies is going to be a long tour, with Bangladesh T20 tour potentially thrown on the end of that," cricket.com.au quoted Hazlewood as saying.

"Then potentially the T20 World Cup leading into the Ashes, so it's a big 12 months, as it always is with Australia, and I want to give myself the best chance to be mentally and physically ready for that. That's the decision I've made, and it sits pretty well with me," he added.

Hazlewood joins fellow Australians — Royal Challenger Bangalore's Josh Phillipe and Sunrisers Hyderabad's Mitchell Marsh — in pulling out of the tournament. While Philippe opted out due to personal reasons, Marsh, just yesterday, pointed at bubble fatigue. Phillipe and Marsh will be replaced by Finn Allen and Jason Roy respectively.

Antigua and Barbuda: Pathum Nissanka kept the West Indies at bay, with Sri Lanka limping to the close at 250 for eight in reply to the home side's first-innings total of 354 on a rain-affected third day of the second and final Test in Antigua on Wednesday.

Bursting with confidence following a debut hundred in the first Test at the same venue just a week earlier, the 22-year-old right-hander defied the Caribbean pacers in compiling an unbeaten 49.

It gave visitors some hope of continuing to whittle away at what is potentially a critical first-innings lead for the West Indies going into day four.

Nissanka's determination for almost three hours, in which he faced 119 deliveries and struck four boundaries, could yet prove beneficial for Sri Lanka should the other overnight batsman, Lasith Embuldeniya, and last man Vishwa Fernando replicate the resistance shown by the West Indian lower order in their first innings.

Pathum Nissanka (L) of Sri Lanka get runs off Jason Holder (R) of West Indies during Day 3 of the second Test between West Indies and Sri Lanka. AFP

Before the showers rolled in though, fast bowler Shannon Gabriel produced the most impressive effort of the day, generating the raw, sustained speed which rattled the Sri Lankans on more than one occasion on their last tour of the region in 2018.

Wicketless and out of sorts in the first Test, Gabriel finally claimed his first wicket of the series in the morning session, firing up disconcerting pace to account for Dinesh Chandimal while Dhananjaya de Silva fell to the occasional off-spin of Jermaine Blackwood.

Resuming at the overnight position of 136 for three, Chandimal and Dhananjaya were immediately challenged by the consistent hostility of Gabriel.

Chandimal was lucky to escape when a diving Rahkeem Cornwall could not hold on to catch at first slip but the former captain's luck ran out when he could not control a hook shot to a lifting delivery on the body and substitute fielder Hayden Walsh Jr completed the comfortable catch at deep square-leg to remove Chandimal for 44.

His fifth-wicket partnership with De Silva was worth 75 runs.

Rare wicket for Blackwood

With the lunch interval beckoning West Indies had even greater cause for celebration when De Silva was adjudged leg-before for 39 to the first delivery of the morning bowled by Blackwood.

Although the batsman trudged off the field dejectedly, television replays of the dismissal confirmed that the decision would have been overturned had he opted for a DRS referral.

Holder removed Niroshan Dickwella to a catch behind while Suranga Lakmal gave Alzarri Joseph his second wicket of the innings via a simple catch to West Indies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite at mid-on in a truncated afternoon period.

When Holder claimed his second wicket by extracting Dushmantha Chameera, the West Indies were doubly keen to push on from that position of 231 for eight to wrap up the innings before the end of play.

However, Nissanka's calm assurance, Embuldeniya's resistance and, most importantly, the return of the rains, which resulted in only 42 overs being bowled in the day, left the West Indies with a job to finish on the penultimate morning.

Day 2 report: Left hanging on 99 overnight, West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite completed his ninth Test century on Tuesday to place his team in a strong position at stumps on the second day of the second cricket Test against Sri Lanka.

Kraigg Brathwaite was the 16th player in Test history to be stranded on 99 overnight and he maintained a streak as all 16 have been converted into hundreds. He has now scored nine of the last 10 centuries by a West Indies opener. AFP

Brathwaite needed only two balls at the start of the day to reach his first century since July 2018. He worked the second ball from Suranga Lakmal to fine leg for a single to also complete his first hundred as West Indies captain from 241 balls with 11 fours.

Brathwaite was the 16th player in Test history to be stranded on 99 overnight and he maintained a streak as all 16 have been converted into hundreds. He has now scored nine of the last 10 centuries by a West Indies opener.

Brathwaite’s 103-run eighth-wicket partnership with Rahkeem Cornwall helped the West Indies to 354 as it batted first after losing the toss. At stumps, Sri Lanka was 136-3, 218 runs behind.

Lahiru Thirimanne followed his scores of 70 and 76 in the first Test with 55 which provided solidity at the top of the Sri Lanka order. Dinesh Chandimal and Dhananjaya de Silva then batted through 25 overs in an unbroken fourth-wicket partnership which was worth 59 runs at stumps when Chandimal was 34 not out and de Silva 23.

De Silva survived a confident appeal for caught behind off Cornwall’s bowling two balls before stumps. He attempted to pull a flighted delivery and there was a clear noise as the ball passed the bat down the leg side.

The umpire rejected Sri Lanka’s appeal for a catch behind and the West Indies called for a review. Replays showed a clear spike as the ball passed the bat. But the television umpire, matching different replay angles with the audio evidence, ruled correctly that the sound didn’t come from the ball hitting the bat.

Jason Holder, who was replaced by Brathwaite as captain, played a major role in encouraging the West Indies players late in the day.

“It’s been a pretty docile wicket so far so we’ve got to try and motivate ourselves,” Holder said. “I took it upon myself to try to encourage the guys and ensure we kept going through the entire innings today.

“It was a pretty good effort from the bowlers so far, not a wicket on which you can just blast people out.”

Holder said the match is closely balanced after two days.

“It’s pretty even-stevens,” he said. “We’ve got two set batsmen at the crease at the moment. Our bowlers toiled very hard, we’re still 60 overs in; maybe if we can grab one of two more wickets before the second new ball then I believe we’ll be pretty much in the game.”

The day began with high anticipation of Brathwaite’s century and he didn’t keep fans waiting.

Cornwall, 43 not out overnight, reached his half century with a four off Lakmal, from 64 balls with eight fours and a six.

Brathwaite survived a confident appeal for lbw when he was 102. Sri Lanka’s appeal was rejected. Replays showed the ball just clipping leg stump.

The century partnership between Brathwaite and Cornwall came from 185 balls with Cornwall contributing 72.

Cornwall had reached a new high score, 73, when he mistimed a drive off Lakmal and provided a gentle, lobbed catch to Vishwa Fernando and mid-off.

Brathwaite stepped up his scoring rate, hitting Lakmal and Dushmantha Chameera to the boundaries at mid-off and mid-on in the next two overs.

He enjoyed a brief stand with Kemar Roach who was out for 9, caught by Niroshan Dickwella off Chameera, giving the wicketkeeper his fifth catch of the innings.

Brathwaite batted through the West Indies innings and was the last man out at 354, dragging a ball from Chameera onto his stumps to end his 514-minute stay at the crease.

Kolkata: Veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh's inclusion may have raised quite a few eyebrows but Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Eoin Morgan on Wednesday said it has boosted their spin force keeping in mind Chennai's slow turners in the upcoming IPL.

The 40-year-old, who skipped the IPL in Dubai last year, was bought by the two-time IPL champions at his base price of Rs 2 crore after he had gone unsold in the first round.

He will join the likes of Sunil Narine, Shakib-al-Hasan, Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy in KKR's spin department.

"Adding Harbhajan to our squad has strengthened us in a really good way. When you look at our spin department as a whole, on paper, it's one of the best in the tournament and that's factual," the KKR skipper said in a virtual media conference.

Owing to the pandemic, IPL 2021 will be held across six venues from 9 April to 30 May with no team getting to play at home.

The tournament will kick-start in Chennai where 10 matches will be held.

"If you look at the options that we have and the conditions that we might play in probably particularly in Chennai, which notoriously can turn or at least raise the eyebrows of our spinners which is hard to do.

"It's an area that if we play well in the tournament I think our spinners will have bowled well and contributed in that regard," the World Cup winning English skipper said.

Morgan, who was appointed skipper midway into their dwindling campaign last season, said this time the squad is well-rounded and the biggest strength would be their middle-order.

"The one positive, amongst others last year was the versatility within our middle order and the flexibility to either promote Sunil or promote myself or DK.

"The strength within the middle order is, if we play well, there's a lot of teams who will not enjoy playing against us. It is one of the strengths of our side, we need to make the right call in when to play the best hand. And that's one of the things that we learned from last year," he said.

KKR missed the playoffs for a second successive time last year, missing out on net run-rate and this year they have retained most of the players.

Their two big foreign recruits have been Shakib-al-Hasan and Ben Cutting, while also adding Harbhajan and an out-of-form Karun Nair apart from a number of young Indian talents.

Morgan said they have a good bench strength this season to deal with the challenges of injury and illness.

"The IPL is the biggest tournament in the world that has the best players. It is highly competitive. One of the challenges for a successful campaign is the battle with injury and illness along the way, whether you like it or not it does happen throughout a season, so planning needs to be put in place in order to strengthen your squad in all areas.

"We did that this year at the auction, which we're hoping will best position ourselves to both have quite a versatile team when it comes to selection, but also have strength and depth if needed."

Morgan, who missed the last two ODIs against India due to a split-webbing, said he's all set to be back in action after removing the stitches on Thursday.

"The stitches will be removed tomorrow and then I'll progress my batting in the coming days and then fielding at the back of the end of that. Given the time frame that is available for me it's looking very good," he added.

New Delhi: Harbhajan Singh is still playing because he "wants to" and he "will", asserts the veteran off-spinner, as combative at 40 as he was in his heydays and least bothered by the people questioning his willingness to carry on.

One of India's greatest spinners is back in IPL this year with the Kolkata Knight Riders after skipping the last season for CSK in the UAE and wants to now "enjoy every moment of whatever cricket is left" in him.

"Lot of people think "Bhai yeh kyun khel raha hain?" Arrey bhai yeh unki soch hai, meri naahi. Meri soch hai ki main abhi khel sakta hoon, toh main khelunga (People think why is he playing? But that's your opinion. From where I see myself, I want to play and I will play)," Harbhajan told PTI in an interview.

"I have got nothing to prove to anyone. My intention is to play well, enjoy my stint out there in the middle and playing cricket still gives me that satisfaction.

"I have set a standard for myself and if I don't meet that, I don't need anyone else but I will blame myself. I need to ask myself, did I put in the optimum effort that was required," he said just before moving into the team bubble.

The owner of 700-plus international wickets is pragmatic about how he approaches the game in his 23rd professional season, having made his Test debut in 1998.

"Yes, I am not a 20-year-old anymore and won't be training like I did then. But yes, as a 40-year-old, I know I am fit and will certainly do what is required to succeed at this level.

"The expectation is still going to be there and responsibilities that were there when I was playing for India remain," said one of the most successful bowlers in IPL history with 150 scalps.

While this is his first experience in a bio-bubble, Harbhajan didn't hide his apprehensions as to why he didn't go to the UAE last year.

"Last year, when IPL happened, COVID-19 in India was at its peak. I was concerned about my family and also about hard quarantine in India after coming back. But this year, it's happening in India and also we have now got used to new normal.

"Vaccines have come. Also, it's my family who pushed. My wife (Geeta) told me that I should go and play," said Harbhajan, who is set to become a father for the second time in July.

But he accepted that not having played a lot of cricket in the interim did make a difference when it came to the dynamics of auction.

"These questions are asked because I haven't played a lot of cricket of late so teams are a bit defensive at auction and they don't want to bid for me.

"But let me remind all that when I did well for CSK in 2019 IPL, I hadn't played any domestic cricket. I came to the camp, prepared, and went into the match. At my level and experience, I know what needs to be done.

"I don't need to play domestic cricket for Punjab and stop a young talent from flourishing. That boy needs that chance more than me," he said.

Kolkata Knight Riders' spin department doesn't inspire the highest of confidence with Kuldeep Yadav having a prolonged bad patch and mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy's fitness being a concern.

During the nets, would you wait for Kuldeep to come to you for advice or you would volunteer yourself if you find something that needs course correction?

"Why will I wait for Kuldeep to come to me? I have never had such egos in my life. If I see anything that needs to be told, I will go up to him and perhaps give him a suggestion as to what he could do better. That's what seniors are for."

"If I see something that needs to be told to him and it will help his bowling, I will myself go up and tell him that. That's what seniors do."

The team's principal owner Shah Rukh Khan had called Harbhajan just after the auction to welcome him to the KKR family and expects to see him with the IPL Trophy.

"We have a good team. T20 is all about three players in a team, could be any three, clicking on that particular day. You see Mumbai Indians are a side which has all its bases covered but they are still beatable. It could be a Rahul Tripathi or a Nitish Rana who can win it for us."

He is at a stage of his career where he needs to do a self-assessment after every season.

"Every season, I introspect if I have it in me to play or not. If I feel I am done, I will say, 'thank you very much'. If I feel I am doing alright, you will see me next year," he said, signing off with a hearty laugh.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 is all set to kick off on 9 April, when defending champions Mumbai Indians will take on three-time runners-up Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Arguably the biggest T20 league in the world, IPL has been responsible for unearthing some of the brightest talents since its inception in 2008. Only a select few, however, are privileged enough to receive call-ups from their respective international sides. India’s Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan are among the latest examples of those who have received their international call-ups after years of delivering in crunch situations for their franchise and performing well in the domestic circuit.

The likes of Devdutt Padikkal, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rahul Tewatia impressed in the previous edition and will continue to be vital cogs for their respective franchises. The competition is intense and players such as these will sense another golden opportunity for them to prove their might to the selectors.

Last, but not least are the likes of Shahrukh Khan, Marco Jansen, Lukman Meriwala and Chetan Sakariya – players who will hope to come off as surprise packages and become household names by the end of the upcoming edition.

On that note, we take a look at 10 uncapped players to watch out for in IPL 2021:

Devdutt Padikkal

Consistency speaks volumes for the 20-year-old Devdutt Padikkal. After finishing as the leading run-getter in both the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament last season, the southpaw carried his rich vein of form in IPL 2020, striking 473 runs – the most by an uncapped Indian in a debut season.

Scoring runs all around the park, playing risk-free cricket and consistently getting RCB off to solid starts has almost assured him of the opening slot in IPL 2021, with skipper Virat Kohli as his partner.

His rollicking form in the recently concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he finished as the second-highest run-getter with a staggering average of 147.40, bodes well for him and RCB.

‘The Emerging Player of the Year’ from IPL 2020 has already turned heads and another successful season will surely bolster his case for an India call-up.

Ruturaj Gaikwad

CSK finished near the bottom of the table, ahead of only RR, in IPL 2020 but Ruturaj Gaikwad emerged as one of the positives for the franchise. Skipper MS Dhoni was criticised for not giving sufficient chances to youngsters and backing experienced players, in spite of their poor performances.

The right-hander became the first uncapped Indian to score three half-centuries on the trot, averaging 51 while maintaining a decent strike rate of 120.71 overall. The 24-year-old is expected to be much more integral to Chennai’s plans this time around.

IPL 2021 will be another opportunity for Gaikwad to shine and prove that he belongs at this level, when he walks to open for CSK.

Rahul Tewatia

He has been featuring in the IPL since 2014 but one night is all it took for him to become a household name. Last season, the left-hander dominated headlines by hammering five consecutive sixes off Sheldon Cottrell to help RR pull off the highest successful chase in the league’s history.

He featured in as many as 14 games for RR in IPL 2020, his best season to date. A clean striker of the cricket ball, he averaged 42.50 with the bat while maintaining a strike rate of 139.34. Besides his role as a middle-order batsman, Tewatia was also handy with his leg-spin and scalped 10 wickets.

RR's Rahul Tewatia smacked five consecutive sixes off Sheldon Cottrell's over in IPL 2020. Sportzpics

The Haryana all-rounder was among the few promising cricketers who were named for India’s T20I series against England. However, like off-spinner Varun Chakravarthy, he failed to clear the fitness tests.

After coming this close to getting an India cap, the 27-year-old will be keen to improve on the fitness front, while aiming to dish out swashbuckling batting performances to keep him in the reckoning.

Marco Jansen

Marco Jansen, along with his brother Duan, got an opportunity to bowl to Virat Kohli and Co in the nets during the team’s South Africa tour in 2017/18. They also drew praise from head coach Ravi Shastri and the other Indian players.

While the left-arm seamer did get a call-up from the South African team during their recently concluded Pakistan tour, he didn’t get a Test cap. Besides swinging the new ball up front, the youngster can also chip in with the bat down the order.

And now, Marco is set to don the jersey of Mumbai Indians, the most successful franchise in the league’s history. While he was bought for his base price of Rs 20 lakh, MI owner Akash Ambani said that they had been tracking the 6ft 8inch pacer for the past two years.

As a franchise, MI is known for having a fantastic talent scout program and moulding talented youngsters into potential match winners. This bodes well for Marco, who might well have the chance to bowl at some of the world’s biggest batsmen and create an impact.

Shahrukh Khan

Tamil Nadu’s big-hitting batsman, whose name resembles Bollywood actor and KKR co-owner, created a buzz at the auction table and was eventually bought by Punjab Kings for a whopping 5.25 crore.

He turned heads during the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where his 19-ball 40* sealed Tamil Nadu’s victory in the quarter-final match against Himachal Pradesh. Later. in the final against Baroda, he scored an unbeaten 17 off 8 balls during the chase, helping his team lift the title.

His explosiveness was evident from his strike rate of 220, the best in the tournament. While Punjab is likely to use him as a middle-order batsman, Shahrukh is also capable of bowling off-spin.

Shreyas Gopal

The all-rounder has been on the scene in domestic cricket since 2013/14, his debut season when he played a vital role in leading Karnataka’s victorious Ranji Trophy campaign. He was picked by Mumbai Indians in the past but only after coming to Rajasthan Royals has he enjoyed greater responsibility and game time.

All-rounder Shreyas Gopal will be a definite starter in RR’s playing XI for the upcoming season. Sportzpics

The leggie has picked up 48 wickets from 45 matches in his IPL career while conceding 7.85 runs per over, his best figures being 4/16. Notably, he also a hattrick to his name, which he scalped against RCB in 2019. Besides, he can also chip in with the bat down the order. Gopal has a knack for striking at crucial junctures of the game. In the past, he has spun a web around the likes of Kohli and AB de Villiers, accounting for them on multiple occasions.

In the recently concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy, he picked up 13 wickets from five matches along with an economy rate of 5.71. A definite starter in RR’s playing XI, the 27-year-old will aim to make the upcoming season his best as he continues his quest for the India cap.

Chetan Sakariya

The youngster, a net bowler for Royal Challengers Bangalore during the previous edition, entered the 2021 auction at his base price of Rs 20 lakhs and was picked up by Rajasthan Royals for Rs 1.2 crore.

Being a left-arm seamer could help his cause as they are in great demand during IPL. During IPL 2020, left-arm seamer Jaydev Unadkat failed to provide adequate support to Jofra Archer, RR’s premier speedster who is likely to miss the upcoming edition due to an elbow injury. Given these factors, Sakariya is more than likely to feature in a few games for the franchise.

Having scalped 12 wickets from five matches, the Saurashtra seamer had a terrific SMAT 2021 campaign, his best coming against Vidarbha when he bowled a spell of 5/11. The 23-year-old varied his pace well and bowled with good control, ending the domestic T20 tournament with a brilliant economy rate of 4.90, the best among the top 10 leading wicket-takers.

Krishnappa Gowtham

Krishnappa Gowtham is not new to the IPL, having represented RR, MI, Punjab Kings (formerly KXIP) in previous seasons. He has delivered time and again with his all-round abilities and his demand in the 2021 auction made it clear that he is a valuable T20 proposition. This year, he had a base price of Rs 20 lakh and was picked up by CSK for a staggering Rs 9.25 crore, making him the most expensive uncapped player in IPL history.

As far as his IPL career is concerned, Gowtham has played a total of 24 matches, scoring 186 runs at a strike rate of 169. A handy off-spinner with 13 wickets to his name, he has got crucial breakthroughs for his franchises. Overall, he has played 62 T20s, amassing 594 runs and scalping 41 wickets in them.

Much like other players that CSK invest in, one of the major reasons they have shelled out a massive amount on Gowtham is his experience. In order to receive an India call-up, however, the 32-year-old would be expected to make some serious impact and he will be fully aware that he has limited time on his side.

Lukman Meriwala

Baroda’s left-arm seamer Lukman Meriwala played a pivotal role in leading his side to the finals of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, snaring 15 wickets from eight matches to finish as the tournament’s second-highest wicket taker.

He also registered the tournament’s best figures (5/8) and troubled the Chandigarh batsman, generating good pace and bounce. That brilliant spell and his 3/28 against Punjab in the semi-finals is probably what prompted DC to bag him at his base price of Rs 20 lakh.

It won’t be easy for him to get game time considering DC’ power-packed bowling line up, but in case he does, the 29-year-old will have to make it count if he wants a shot at the highly sought-after India cap.

Kartik Tyagi

One of the finds from the Under 19 World Cup, Kartik Tyagi impressed drew attention with his ability to generate good pace, upwards of 140 kmph, and bowling threatening inswingers and yorkers on occasion.

Backing the young talent, RR gave him as many 10 matches, but he proved expensive, finishing with an economy of 9.61 along with a total of nine wickets. A major area where the youngster needed grooming was his control.

Later, he was named as a net bowler during India’s tour of Australia. Having played alongside some of the best in the business, the 20-year-old will aim to come off as a much more disciplined and wicket-taking bowler in IPL 2020. And support from Jofra Archer and Chris Morris, two of the most renowned quicks in T20 cricket, will once again serve as a major learning curve for Tyagi.

London: England's Jofra Archer will begin two weeks of rehabilitation after undergoing surgery on his finger and can only start his net sessions after that.

There are various reports regarding the duration of his absence from the Indian Premier League which starts on 9 April. According to a report in ESPNCricinfo, the England pacer is expected to miss the first four matches of RR.

The 25-year-old had surgery to remove a fragment of glass from the middle finger on his right hand on Monday.

"England pace bowler Jofra Archer underwent successful surgery to his right hand on Monday. A fragment of glass was removed during the operation to his middle finger on his right hand," the English and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said in a statement.

"He will now commence two weeks of rehabilitation. The Consultant will review him before returning to training," it added.

Archer had returned home midway from the tour of India to get treated for a worsening elbow injury. It was later revealed that he had suffered a cut on his right hand's middle finger in January prior to the tour of India.

The finger healed sufficiently for Archer to take part in both the Test and T20I legs of the tour but the ECB decided it would be prudent to investigate the wound properly.

"Further update on his elbow injury will be provided once he has returned to bowling to assess the effectiveness of his recent injection," the ECB said.

"Archer suffered a cut to his hand while cleaning at his home in January shortly before flying to India to prepare for the Test series.

"The ECB's medical team managed the injury throughout the tour, and it did not impact on his availability."

The 14th edition of the IPL begins on 9 April in Chennai.

The Rajasthan Royals open their campaign on 12 April when they take on Punjab Kings in Mumbai.

Mumbai: Delhi Capitals' seasoned leg-spinner Amit Mishra on Wednesday said he is working on improving his batting ahead of the upcoming IPL, and preparing himself for situations where he might be required to use the willow to good effect.

A few members of the Delhi Capitals team, who have assembled in the city, carried out their first practice session at the Cricket Club of India on Tuesday. Mishra said that everyone looked terrific during the practice session.

"All the boys are looking good here on the field. They are all ready to put in the hard yards and it's nice to see the youngsters practicing hard as well," Mishra said.

The 38-year-old added that apart from honing his bowling prowess, he is focussing on improving his batting as well.

"I am working on my batting. The coaches have also told me to keep practicing my batting as there might be situations in matches when I will have to string partnerships of 25-30 runs.

"We need to be ready for everything. Basically, if I am batting with a recognised batsman then I should focus on taking singles and giving the strike to my partner."

After being in quarantine for one week, the players got an opportunity to test their skills and get into the groove ahead of the lucrative league's 14th edition, starting here on 9 April.

"I batted for the first time in 20 days. We came out after being in quarantine for seven days, so I was just looking to get into the groove and get into a good rhythm," said senior batsman Ajinkya Rahane.

"And as we get closer to the tournament, it will be all about maintaining that good rhythm and momentum," he added.

Chennai: Chennai Super Kings all-rounder Moeen Ali on Wednesday vouched for MS Dhoni's captaincy and said most cricketers look forward to play under him as he helps them improve their game.

Dhoni is gearing up to lead the CSK franchise in the upcoming edition of the IPL starting 9 April.

"I've spoken to players who have played under MS and they tell me how he improves their game. I believe a great captain does that," the England all-rounder was quoted as saying by the CSK website.

"I think it's something on every player's wish list to play under MS. I think it's the confidence and the clarity he gives people. It's exciting," he added.

Moeen, who said he was looking forward to playing under Dhoni, said it is very important to have strong leadership and coaches who stay calm.

"It's very important to have strong leadership and coaches who stay calm, who take the pressure off the players as much as they can and are consistent. We are very lucky we have that," he added.

"At CSK I feel the reality is there for us to win the competition. I'm excited about playing with the players we have here," the 33-year-old left-hand batsman cum off-spinner, who was picked up at the IPL auction in February, further said.

Moeen, who previously turned out for Royal Challengers Bangalore, said, "I think what differentiates CSK from other teams is actually how they structure everything, from the squad they have to the way they do things. They look a very calm franchise that doesn't panic."

The CSK players are currently training in Mumbai, where they play their first five matches of IPL-14, beginning with a game against Delhi Capitals on 10 April.

The Dhoni-led side had commenced practice in Chennai on March 8 before shifting base to Mumbai.

London: England's director of cricket Ashley Giles says the ECB would like to stay away from any conflict with players on their participation in the IPL as it could well mean losing the top ones if they are forced to choose between franchise and national duty.

The former spinner, who played 54 Tests, 62 ODIs between 1997-2006, feels any standoff with the players on the matter could have dangerous implications for England cricket.

"Right now I think our players love playing for England," Giles said on BBC's 'Tuffers and Vaughan' show.

"I don't want that to be a kiss of death. I think we have to understand that it could be a danger in the future. We don't particularly want to go toe-to-toe with our players over IPL participation in the long run because we may face losing some of our best players," he added.

England rotated their all-format players for the tour of Sri Lanka and India, keeping in mind the busy schedule throughout the year.

However, all of them have been allowed to stay for the entirety of the IPL, which means those involved in the final stages are most likely to miss the opening Test against New Zealand, slated to begin on 2 June.

The series against the Black Caps was planned after the NOCs for IPL were granted to the players.

"That window was clear for anyone who got to the later stages of IPL to play in the whole competition," Giles said.

"That is how their contracts were agreed. We don't think it is right to renege on that agreement," he added.

Currently, there are 12 England cricketers, some with million-dollar contracts, playing in the IPL.

These include Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Johnny Bairstow, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Sam Billings, Dawid Malan and, Jofra Archer if deemed fit.

The IPL is slated to begin from 9 April with the final scheduled to be played on 30 May.

Cheteshwar Pujara is making his Indian Premier League (IPL) comeback in the upcoming edition after a gap of seven years. The 'Test expert' last featured in IPL in 2014 when he played for the Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings).

After repetitively going unsold in the auctions, Pujara was snapped up by MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 2021 auction for his base price of Rs 50 lakh.

The Indian cricketer is delighted on being given the opportunity to return to the IPL.

"To make a comeback to the IPL means a lot to me. It is the best league in the world and I have missed out on being part of it for quite some time," Pujara told Cricbuzz.

His purchase at the auction led to a round of applause from the remaining seven franchises at the auction.

"I could not have been more pleased. I am really proud and happy about that gesture by the franchises. It is the respect one gets for representing the country. I thank the franchise, Mr Srinivasan and Mahi (MS Dhoni) bhai for showing faith in me," he added.

Pujara had usually used the free time during the IPL by playing in county cricket to hone his skills. Last year, he signed for Gloucestershire after he went unsold in the 2020 auction. This time, however, Pujara is more focused on improving his T20 skills which are "needed" in the shortest format of the game.

The 33-year-old laments the fact that those seen as Test cricket specialists are not given enough opportunities in other formats.

"When a white-ball tournament is happening in the domestic circuit, I would be busy playing for the Indian team. But when I had a chance to play white-ball games in county cricket, I actually performed well. I know I can do well here but I have not had sufficient opportunities to showcase the talent," said Pujara.

The Gujarat cricketer has so far featured in 30 IPL games and has 390 runs to his name at a strike rate of 99.74.

Mumbai: Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting is convinced that leading the side in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League will make swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant an even better player.

Pant was named the captain of Delhi Capitals for the upcoming IPL after regular skipper Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of the tournament after he injured his left shoulder during the recently-concluded England's tour of India.

"Unfortunate that Shreyas will miss the tournament, but looking forward to seeing @RishabhPant17 grab his opportunity. It's well deserved for his recent performances and he's coming in with a lot of confidence. I'm convinced captaincy will make him an even better player," Ponting tweeted.

The highly-rated Pant has been in sensational form across formats this year. He played match-winning knocks of 97 and unbeaten 89 in the third and the fourth Test against Australia to help India clinch the Border Gavaskar Trophy Down Under.

He followed that up with a brilliant century against England in the fourth Test in Ahmedabad, forcing the selectors to include him in the white-ball squads.

Making a comeback into the Indian white-ball side, Pant was promoted to No 4 in the series against England, and the 23-year-old did not disappoint. He scored half-centuries in the two ODIs he featured in.

This season will mark the wicketkeeper-batsman's debut as IPL captain. Pant has led Delhi's state team in the past.

Antigua and Barbuda: Captain Kraigg Brathwaite was last out in the West Indies' first innings of 354 before the visitors rallied behind Lahiru Thirimanne's third consecutive half-century to reach 136 for three at stumps on the second day of the second and final Test in Antigua on Tuesday.

After scores of 70 and 76 in the drawn first Test, Thirimanne's run of good scores – going back to the series in South Africa last December – continued with another composed innings of 55.

However, his dismissal to Kemar Roach in the day's final session necessitated consolidation which the unbroken fourth-wicket pair of Dinesh Chandimal (34 not out) and Dhananjaya de Silva (23 not out) provided on an increasingly placid surface with an unbroken stand of 59.

Earlier, Brathwaite extended his occupation of the crease to eight-and-a-half hours which brought him 126 off 311 deliveries with 13 fours, a ninth Test century in which he fulfilled the role of anchor of the innings.

His opposite number Dimuth Karunaratne, by contrast, survived 16 balls before an edged drive off fast bowler Alzarri Joseph produced a stunning diving catch at third slip by Nkrumah Bonner to send the left-hander back to the pavilion for just one when Sri Lanka started their reply immediately after lunch.

As in the first Test a week earlier at the same venue, occasional seamer Kyle Mayers accounted for Oshada Fernando and when Roach bowled Thirimanne through the gate, the innings was at a crossroads at 77 for three.

"I think it's about even-steven at this stage," said former West Indies captain Jason Holder.

"This is a pretty good batting wicket. You have to be really patient. Maybe if we can grab one or two more wickets early tomorrow before the new ball becomes due, we can put them under greater pressure."

Lakmal impresses

Suranga Lakmal again led the Sri Lankan bowling effort with figures of four for 94 off 28 overs as the West Indies batted through the morning session after resuming on 287 for seven.

It was Lakmal, the experienced fast-medium bowler, who finally broke through for an increasingly frustrated Sri Lankan team halfway through the morning session when he terminated a 103-run eighth-wicket partnership between Brathwaite and Rahkeem Cornwall.

Very much the aggressor for the two-and-a-half hours of their time in the middle, Cornwall went past his previous best in Tests – 61 in the first innings of the first Test just a week earlier.

But he miscued a heave to the on-side and offered a simple catch to Vishwa Fernando at mid-on.

His 73 came off 92 balls and was embellished by 10 fours and one six.

Brathwaite, who resumed on 99 overnight and went to three figures by turning the third ball of the morning from Lakmal to fine leg, never eased out of first gear, even with the demise of Cornwall.

He eventually stroked two more boundaries to add to his tally of 11 from day one but then saw the dismissal of Kemar Roach off Dushmantha Chameera, giving wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella his fifth catch of the innings.

Joined by last man Shannon Gabriel, someone with no pretensions to batsmanship, it seemed almost inevitable that Brathwaite would complete the rare feat of carrying his bat through a completed Test innings twice, having done so previously against Pakistan in Sharjah in 2016.

But it was the home captain who perished, playing on to give Chameera a third wicket of the innings.

New Delhi: Star India batsman Rishabh Pant was on Tuesday named captain of Delhi Capitals in place of an injured Shreyas Iyer for the upcoming Indian Premier League season beginning on 9 April.

Iyer has been ruled out of the IPL after injuring his left shoulder during the recently-concluded India-England ODI series.

"Under Shreyas' captaincy, our team reached newer heights, and he is going to be missed immensely. In his absence, the franchise has collectively picked Rishabh to lead the team this year," DC Chairman and co-owner Kiran Kumar Gandhi said in a release.

"While it has come under unfortunate circumstances, it is a tremendous opportunity for him to grow further. I wish him all the best in his new role."

This will be 23-year-old Pant's debut as IPL captain. The wicketkeeper-batsman has captained Delhi's state team in the past.

"Delhi is where I grew up, and where my IPL journey began six years ago. To lead this team one day is a dream I've always harboured. And today, as that dream comes true, I feel humbled," Pant said.

"I am truly grateful, especially to our team owners, who considered me capable enough for this role. With an amazing coaching staff, and a plethora of accomplished seniors around me, I can't wait to give my absolute best for Delhi Capitals."

Pant was one of the architects of India's historic 2-1 Test series win in Australia in January. He then played a big role in India's 3-1 Test series win against England, scoring 270 runs from six innings with the help of a century.

Pant also returned to India's white-ball team against England. After a decent outing in the T20 Internationals, he was in cracking form in the ODI series, hitting 77 and 78 in the two matches he played.

Iyer described Pant as the best player to lead the Delhi side.

"When I sustained the shoulder injury, and Delhi Capitals needed a leader for this edition of the IPL, I had no doubt that Rishabh would be the best man for the job," he said.

"He has all my good wishes to make amazing things happen with our absolutely incredible team. I'm going to miss the team tremendously, and will be cheering for them throughout."

Head coach Ricky Ponting said Pant's success in the series against Australia and England will give him the confidence needed to take on the new role.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for young Rishabh, who is coming off successful stints against Australia and England which will no doubt give him the confidence needed to take on a new role that comes with a lot more responsibility," the former Australian captain said.

"The coaching group is excited to work with him, and we can't wait for the season to get started."

Co-owner Parth Jindal said Pant embodies DC's passionate and fearless brand of cricket.

"There is no doubt that Shreyas Iyer's leadership and batting will be missed this year, and we hope to see him back on the field soon," Jindal said.

"Delhi Capitals as a team plays a passionate and fearless brand of cricket, and Rishabh Pant embodies that best. The Delhi team has played an important role in his growth as a cricketer, just like he has played an equally important role in the growth of the Delhi team."

The Delhi Capitals will take on Chennai Super Kings in their first match of the IPL 2021 season, at the Wankhede Stadium, on 10 April.

Delhi Capitals finished as runners-up in the last edition of the IPL, losing to Mumbai Indians in the final.

England paceman Jofra Archer has had successful surgery to remove a piece of glass that became lodged in a finger when he smashed a fish tank while trying to clean it.

The 25-year-old played two Tests and all five Twenty20s during England's recent tour of India but was ruled out of the one-day series because of a problem with his right elbow.

While that issue remains the bigger concern, England men's managing director Ashley Giles said the finger problem, sustained in January, had been resolved.

Giles revealed the nature of the freak accident on a BBC radio show on Monday.

"This is going to sound like an awful conspiracy," Giles told the Tuffers and Vaughan programme. "He was cleaning or something at home and he's got a fish tank, dropped the fish tank, cut his hand.

"So he's been in surgery today (Monday), he's come out of it well. It was managed through India."

He added: "I think they've found a small fragment of glass still in the tendon so it was the right thing to do."

Archer, who is a key player for England across all formats, will miss the start of the Indian Premier League, which runs from 9 April to 30 May.

England face a packed schedule of matches this year including a five-Test series at home against India, a T20 World Cup in India and the Ashes in Australia.

Archer has been troubled by his elbow since 2019, missing three Tests of England's tour of South Africa in early 2020 and the T20 series that followed.

His England team-mate Ben Stokes said last week that Archer needed to get his elbow "properly sorted" to protect his long-term career.

New Delhi: India should stick to the experienced opening combination of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan in the T20 World Cup, feels former selector Sarandeep Singh, calling the duo the "best option" despite skipper Virat Kohli's recent interest in the slot.

Sarandeep, whose term ended with India's historic win in Australia earlier this year, also gave his take on split captaincy, asserting the issue was never even discussed in his time as Kohli performed in all three formats.

After the T20 series win against England, Kohli had said he will open in the IPL raising the possibility of him opening with Rohit in the World Cup. Dhawan was dropped after the opening game of the series and Ishan Kishan was picked ahead of him in one of the games. Kohli and Rohit opened in the final T20.

"It was surprising. He (Dhawan) did well in the IPL, he did well in Australia. Whenever he plays he performs. He is mentally very strong. Maybe they want to try out options but in my view the left-hand right-hand combination of Rohit and Dhawan is the best option for the India at World Cup," Sarandeep told PTI.

"You can't judge him on basis of one match. He did well in ODIs after that. The IPL will decide a lot of the team. There are no easy places in the team. Ishan Kishan too will need to do exceptionally well to make the team," he added.

He also said that KL Rahul should continue keeping in the ODIs and the in-form Rishabh Pant will have to wait for his turn when Shreyas Iyer returns.

The IPL beginning 9 April will decide the bulk of the spots for the World Cup squad and Sarandeep feels Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav, who became India's go to pair in the middle overs after the 2017 Champions Trophy, are no more sure starters in the T20 or ODI format. Kuldeep has also lost his place in the T20 squad.

"The two spinners can still do the job. They are proper spinners. Once Ravindra Jadeja is back from injury, the trio remains the best option in limited overs format," Sarandeep said.

"Kuldeep, for example, has not got a lot of opportunities and seems down on confidence. He needs to be backed. Chahal was also replaced in the recent T20s against England by Rahul Chahar and did not play the following ODIs.

"Though there is a lot of competition, Chahal and Kuldeep should play together. They have still have a lot of potential," said Sarandeep, who played three Tests and five ODIs for India.

Pant has surpassed Wriddhiman Saha as the number one keeper in Tests and has also become the preferred option in T20s following his stellar success in all three formats in the last four months.

"No praise will be enough for Pant. He had some fitness issues, worked on that and worked on his shot selection. If you expect a 21-year-old to play like a 30-year-old, it is tough to start with. You see Hardik (Pandya), the way he bats now with experience, same thing has been seen in Pant now in the last six months or so.

"He was out of the team which was good for him. There is a right time and right ball to hit. The way he played in Australia, it shows he has gained a lot of experience. He is picking and choosing.

"He can give you 10 years in Test cricket, Saha cannot and has become the number one choice. In ODIs, Shreyas got injured so Rishabh played. When he is back, KL should be the wicketkeeper because he has been keeping wickets for a long time and is doing a fine job."

Sarandeep also believes there is no place for Krunal Pandya in the ODI team if Hardik is not bowling.

"If we talk about ODIs, if Hardik is not bowling, Krunal can't be your fifth bowler. He batted beautifully but Krunal can't give you 10 overs, he is a good T20 player but when it comes to ODIs, he doesn't have the skill to challenge the batsmen.

"So, if Krunal plays, Hardik needs to bowl. If one bowler is hit or injured there is no extra option if Hardik doesn't bowl. His workload has to be managed too but you have to play proper bowlers," said the 41-year-old former off-spinner.

On the issue of spilt captaincy, Sarandeep said the it was not even discussed in his tenure.

"Spilt captaincy is needed when your captain is not performing but he (Kohli) is the only player to average more than 50 in all formats. If he isn't performing in one format you can take the leadership pressure off him and give it to someone else.

"Just because he has not won an IPL you can't remove him from India captaincy. He is also the fittest player and captain. Rohit is there to lead the side in his absence but there is no reason to replace Virat."

Less than five months since Mumbai Indians (MI) trounced Delhi Capitals (DC) in the final of the 2020 edition to lift the trophy for an unprecedented fifth time, the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to return to the television screens.

Defending champions Mumbai take on three-time runners-up Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the lung-opener on 9 April at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) taking on last year's runners-up Delhi at the Wankhede Stadium the following day. The IPL caravan will then travel around the country for more than a month, with the final taking place on 30 May at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad — which will also host the other playoffs.

The tournament, which started in 2008 at a time when the T20 format was still in its infancy, has played a massive contribution over the years, both in terms of discovering hidden gems in various corners of the cricket-mad nation and bringing players from various parts of the world closer as they share dressing rooms and travel around together for close two eight weeks. Perhaps the biggest gainers from the tournament are the youngsters — both capped and uncapped — who learn a great deal from some of the superstars they play alongside, which greatly advances their understanding of the game and helps expand their skills set.

With a number of new recruits being added to the rosters of the eight participating franchises, we take a look at some of the rookies who could make a statement in IPL 2021:

Lukman Meriwala (Delhi Capitals)

The left-arm seamer from Baroda netted 15 wickets at an average of 13.26 to finish the second-highest wicket-taker in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy earlier this year. Perhaps that performance, which included a haul of 3/28 against Punjab in the semi-final, played a role in Delhi Capitals expressing interest in him and securing his services for his base price of Rs 20 lakh.

Meriwala, whose consistent performances with the ball was one of the key factors behind Baroda’s run to the final of the tournament, will hope to bowl with a similar rhythm and impress the Delhi camp later this summer. And an opportunity is what Meriwala, who is 29 years of age, desperately needs if he is to live his dream of donning the Indian jersey down the road.

Marco Jansen (Mumbai Indians)

From bowling to the likes of Virat Kohli in the nets to bagging a maiden IPL contract with five-time champions Mumbai Indians, Marco’s story is one that only seems to be getting better with the passage of time.

Marco and with his twin brother Duan were specially summoned by coach Ravi Shastri to bowl to the Indian batsmen in the nets at the Wanderers, where the third Test took place during their 2018 tour of South Africa. And the pair were by far the most impressive among the bowlers who gave the Indian batsmen their fair share of practice, getting pats on their backs from the Indian players and Shastri.

The left-arm seamer, who could stare New Zealand’s Kyle Jamieson in the eye without having to look up, replaced Ottniel Baartman in the South African contingent for the tour of Pakistan earlier this year, which ultimately didn’t translate into game time as he wasn’t named in the T20I squad.

Marco, who has a T20 economy below eight and a strike rate of 35, has the chance to give his cricketing career a real impetus by joining the ranks of the most successful side in IPL history.

Dawid Malan (Punjab Kings)

England unearthed another potential limited-overs superstar in Malan while hosting South Africa in the summer of 2017. The late bloomer — who made his international debut at an age just shy of the 30 mark — tore the Proteas attack apart with a 44-ball 78 to collect the Man of the Match award and announce himself on the international stage.

England's Dawid Malan is currently the No 1 batsman in the T20I format. Sportzpics

Malan, who was picked up by the rechristened Punjab Kings at his base price of Rs 1.5 crore, has his sights set on making a similar impact in his maiden IPL season. The Middlesex batsman, who was born in London but grew up in South Africa, boasts of some impressive statistics in the 20-over format, the most prominent of which is his T20I average of 50.15 and a strike rate of 144.31.

Malan, currently the top-ranked T20I batsman in the world, was in particularly destructive form during the tour of South Africa in November-December, finishing as the top scorer in the three-T20I series with 173 runs, including an unbeaten 99 off 47 deliveries that helped the visitors make a mockery of the 192-run target set by the Proteas in the third T20I.

In the tour of India, which concluded on Sunday, the left-hand batsman was impressive in patches, particularly in the 46-ball 68 in the final T20I as well as a 50 in the final ODI, a sign that he certainly is in good nick with the bat heading into his first outing in the league.

Jhye Richardson (Punjab Kings)

Another cricketer who has made his mark in international cricket but was yet to experience the energy of the Indian Premier League, Richardson’s call-up finally came when Punjab Kings shelled out Rs 14 crore — the fourth-most expensive buy in the 2021 player auction — to secure his services.

File image of Australia pacer Jhye Richardson. Reuters

The lanky Western Australian pacer first made headlines with a 3/30 in the final of the 2016-17 Big Bash League that bagged him the Player of the Final award and Perth Scorchers the title. Since then, his place in the Australian team across formats has mainly been dependent on one of their big three in the pace department, viz. Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, getting rested or injured, although Richardson has largely been impressive in the opportunities that he’s got.

As far as his recent form goes, he’s had a mixed run in the five-T20I series in New Zealand but finished the leading wicket-taker in the BBL that took place before the Aussies visited their Trans-Tasman neighbours, collecting 29 wickets at a superb average of 16.31.

Riley Meredith (Punjab Kings)

Punjab clearly went into the player auction with the intent of shoring up their pace department, which hardly saw performances of note from anyone other than Mohammed Shami last season. And looks like they will be handing out quite a few league debuts this season, with Meredith among the players who are yet to play in the cash-rich league.

Meredith’s name created a buzz after the Australian pacer was sold for Rs 8 crore to Punjab, becoming the most expensive uncapped overseas player in the history of the league (a record that was previously held by English pacer Jofra Archer).

The Tasmanian, who is known to clock speeds of up to 150 kmph, has had an impressive Big Bash run for the Hobart Hurricanes, racking up 43 wickets across four editions to go with some decent numbers (average 23.63, economy 8.06).

As far as getting game time with the Punjab Kings is concerned, Meredith will face direct competition from compatriot Richardson, another individual yet to play an IPL game. That, however, is subject to the team think tank choosing to play an overseas frontline seamer.

Shahrukh Khan (Punjab Kings)

Tamil Nadu batsman Shahrukh, named after the illustrious actor, was part of Dinesh Karthik’s side that beat Baroda in the final to lift the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy earlier in January.

Given he had pitched in with noteworthy performances during the campaign, including a match-winning 40 not out off 19 balls in the quarter-final against Himachal Pradesh as well as an unbeaten 18 off 7 in the final that helped finish the chase, Shahrukh was bound to create a buzz among the IPL scouts with his pinch-hitting ability, as well as his handiness with the ball given his off-break bowling ability.

Shahrukh, however, would’ve never imagined in his wildest dreams that there would be a bidding war over him in the player auction as Preity Zinta’s Punjab Kings ultimately shelled out Rs 5.25 crore (from his base price of Rs 20 lakh) to add him to their roster.

Finn Allen (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

RCB signed Allen up as a replacement for Australian opening batsman Josh Philippe, who had made his league debut a little over four months ago in the previous season, but has been ruled out of this year’s edition due to “personal reasons”.

New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman Allen, who is thus a like-for-like replacement for the Aussie in the Bangalore squad, was initially overlooked in the player auction after being listed among the 292 players at Rs 20 lakh.

And yet he could be in line for a debut sooner rather than later as his recent numbers in the Super Smash, in which he topped the run-charts (512 runs at an average and strike rate of 56.89 and 193.94 respectively) and played a key role in Wellington Firebirds’ title-winning run, could give him the edge in occupying one of the four available overseas slots.

Kyle Jamieson (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

The Kiwi all-rounder has had a meteoric run since the breakthrough performance on debut at home against India in the summer of 2020. His rise in international cricket since then surely wouldn't have gone unnoticed, especially by the franchise owners in the cash-rich league.

That the six-foot-eight-inch pacer went for Rs 15 crore (from a base price of Rs 75 lakh) after an intense bidding war in the player auction last month, the amount second only to South African Chris Morris's record sum, didn't come as a surprise to many.

File image of Kyle Jamieson. AFP

Jamieson therefore will hope to come good for RCB, who shelled out the enormous sum in the auction, in his maiden IPL appearance. And what gives the right-arm seamer from New Zealand over the rest of the Bangalore attack is his T20 strike rate of 140.85, which improves to 151.85 when taking the international matches in the format into account. That aside from his ability to generate the extra bounce thanks to his stature.

Mohammed Azharuddeen (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

The hard-hitting Kerala opener got picked up by Virat Kohli-led RCB at his base price of Rs 20 lakh in the player auction earlier in February. And that could prove to be an absolute steal for the Bengaluru-based franchise should Azharuddeen perform to his full potential this season.

The opener, after all, sent ripples of excitement through the Indian cricketing circles after smashing a whirlwind 137 not out for Kerala against domestic giants Mumbai on 13 January. Azharuddeen narrowly missed out on breaking Rishabh Pant's record for the fastest ton in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy as he setup an eight-wicket win for his side — their first against Mumbai in any format — and his name started doing the rounds as far as getting picked up by an IPL franchise is concerned.

With a strike rate of 142.27 in 24 T20 matches, Azharuddeen certainly could prove useful for the Royal Challengers as an alternative to Devdutt Padikkal at the top of the order, with the skipper occupying the other slot.

Rajat Patidar (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

The batsman from Madhya Pradesh got his first big break on the big platform when RCB bought him at his base price of Rs 20 lakh.

Patidar, who has 699 runs in 22 T20 appearances to his credit at a mean strike rate of 143.53, has been in good form with the bat of late, scoring 102 and 54 in MP’s fixtures against Andhra and Punjab respectively in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. In Mushtaq Ali, he collected 221 runs at an impressive average of 44.20 with a strike rate of over 150, including a match-winning 96 against Goa.

The Indore native knows this could be his big chance to impress the powers-that-be in the top echelons of Indian cricket. He is after all 27 years of age and the time is now if he is to make an impactful performance that helps him realise his dream of playing for India.
