Putting behind a closely fought encounter—one that resulted in a defeat— against Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians will look to come out all guns blazing when they take on Kings XI Punjab in match 13 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 at Abu Dhabi.

Against RCB, MI lost their top order (consisting of star batsmen Rohit Sharma, Quinton de Kock and Suryakumar Yadav) quickly and all the burden came on the middle order. Young Ishan Kishan played a scintillating knock of 99 runs from just 58 balls and he was ably supported by West Indian power-hitter Kieron Pollard, who hammered 60 off 24 balls.

The Rohit Sharma-led outfit had a poor start against Chennai Super Kings in the lung-opener, before bouncing back with a victory over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and almost winning against RCB.

The team’s openers would have to lay a solid foundation for their middle-order batters and this will benefit them both while setting targets or chasing. The most pressing concern, however, happens to be their bowling. Despite boasting of Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah and James Pattinson in their ranks, they were hammered all around the park, that too in Dubai where boundaries are not as small as Sharjah. Over-reliance on their death over specialist Jasprit Bumrah is going to cause problems and hence, the bowling must deliver as a whole.

Kings XI Punjab too have begun their campaign on a similar note, having won only one game (against RCB) and going down against Rajasthan Royals, and Delhi Capitals (in a Super Over thriller).

KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal have impressed everyone with their hitting prowess so far. However, it will be interesting to see if the middle order steps up in case of a rare failure.

Young leggie Ravi Bishnoi has been the talk of the town and provided the team breakthroughs at regular intervals. In Mohammed Shami, they have one of the best death bowlers and in Sheldon Cottrell a really handy option for the powerplay overs. Yet, in their last match against RR, Shami and Cottrell went for 13.25 and 17.33 runs per over respectively. As senior campaigners, the two will aim to lead by example against MI.

From the perspective of the points table, both teams have two points and will be inching to get a win to move up the ladder.

Dubai: In a violation of the ICC's COVID-19 protocol, India and Rajasthan Royals batsman Robin Uthappa was seen applying saliva on the ball while fielding against Kolkata Knight Riders in an IPL match in Dubai.

The incident happened right after Uthappa dropped a Sunil Narine skier in the fifth ball of the third over on Wednesday. He was seen applying saliva after collecting the ball at the mid-on region and the video of it has since gone viral on social media.

The IPL has not issued any statement on the incident so far.

The ICC banned the use of saliva to shine the ball due to the COVID-19 pandemic in June this year.

"If a player does apply saliva to the ball, the umpires will manage the situation with some leniency during an initial period of adjustment for the players, but subsequent instances will result in the team receiving a warning," it had stated in its Standard Operating Procedure for the game.

"A team can be issued up to two warnings per innings but repeated use of saliva on the ball will result in a 5-run penalty to the batting side. Whenever saliva is applied to the ball, the umpires will be instructed to clean the ball before play recommenced," the ICC notification read.

Defending 175, Kolkata Knight Riders won the match by 37 runs to jump to second spot in the ladder with back-to-back wins.

Abu Dhabi: Coming off heart-breaking losses, the Indian Premier League game between Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab will be a test of character for both sides as they look to regain momentum here on Thursday.

KXIP were at the receiving end of the highest successful run-chase in the tournament history as Rajasthan Royals overhauled a target of 224 with three balls to spare on Sunday.

While Kieron Pollard and Ishan Kishan led a remarkable fight-back, chasing 202, before Mumbai went down to Royal Challengers Bangalore in a Super Over.

KXIP have failed to tighten the screws when it mattered most. In their two losses, they were in a good position but could not grab the moments. Sportzpics

Defending champions Mumbai Indians lost their opening game but bounced back to beat Kolkata Knight Riders. However, Rohit Sharma's men failed to cross the line against RCB.

Similarly, after losing to Delhi Capitals in their opener, KXIP came back strongly to register their first points by defeating RCB. But, despite a fabulous batting display, they lost to Rajasthan.

KXIP have failed to tighten the screws when it mattered most. In their two losses, they were in a good position but could not grab the moments.

Their bowling looked out of sorts against Rajasthan as they failed to defend a big total with Rahul Tewatia hitting pacer Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over to win the match for his team.

Even Mohammed Shami (3/53), who has been in brilliant form prior to that onslaught, was taken to the cleaners. Barring an economical spell by leggie Ravi Bishnoi (0/34), the other KXIP bowlers had an off day against Rajasthan.

Skipper KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal have made inspiring starts this season, hitting a century and a fifty each, and getting the duo out early will be the key for Mumbai.

Against Rajasthan, the pair shared a 183-run opening stand with Agarwal scoring his maiden ton while Rahul, fresh from recording the highest score by an Indian in IPL history, hit a 54-ball 69.

Mumbai Indians are blessed with a splendid batting firepower with the likes of Rohit, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan at the top-order, followed by the big-hitting Pollard and Hardik Pandya.

A major cause of concern for them will be pace ace Jaspirt Bumrah's inconsistency. The speedster has picked up only three wickets in as many games and has failed to make the kind of impact that is expected from a bowler of his calibre.

Mumbai, though, will have the psychological advantage having played a game in Abu Dhabi before.

The squads (From):

Kings XI Punjab: KL Rahul (c), Mayank Agarwal, Sheldon Cottrell, Chris Gayle, Glenn Maxwell, Mohammed Shami, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Karun Nair, James Neesham, Nicholas Pooran (wk), Ishan Porel, Arshdeep Singh, Murugan Ashwin, Krishnappa Gowtham, Harpreet Brar, Deepak Hooda, Chris Jordan, Sarfaraz Khan, Mandeep Singh, Darshan Nalkande, Ravi Bishnoi, Simran Singh (wk), Jagadeesha Suchith, Tajinder Singh, Hardus Viljoen.

Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma (C), Aditya Tare, Anmolpreet Singh, Anukul Roy, Chris Lynn, Dhawal Kulkarni, Digvijay Deshmukh, Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, James Pattison, Jasprit Bumrah, Jayant Yadav, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Mitchell McClenaghan, Mohsin Khan, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Prince Balwant Rai, Quinton De Kock, Rahul Chahar, Saurabh Tiwary, Sherfane Rutherford, Suryakumar Yadav, Trent Boult.

Match starts at 7.30 pm IST.

Abu Dhabi: Mumbai Indians bowling coach Shane Bond on Wednesday said Kings XI Punjab skipper KL Rahul would be his team's prime target in their upcoming IPL clash here and called the opener a dynamic batsman, capable of scoring around the field.

Kings XI openers Rahul and Mayank Agarwal are enjoying a superb run in the ongoing IPL, leading the run-scorers' tally with 222 and 221 runs respectively, including one century and a fifty each. MI and KXIP will clash on Thursday.

And Bond very well understands the importance of stopping the duo on Thursday, insisting that early wickets would be key to success for the title-holders.

"KL Rahul has got runs against us in the last few games and he is a brilliant player. We are having our bowlers' meeting this afternoon, in terms of our planning for our opponents who are playing well. KL is a dynamic player, who scores all around the field," the former Kiwi pacer said.

"We also know that he (Rahul) takes his time generally through the middle overs, so that's perhaps an opportunity to create some pressure on him and the batsmen around him.

"We will have specific ideas about how we can get him out. In the end, we can't allow him (Rahul) to score in the areas he is very, very strong. He scores well over extra-cover, picks up over fine-leg."

Bond stressed that MI have the potential to restrict the marauding Kings XI's batting line-up.

"We have got a quality bowling unit, we just have to put pressure on them. Mind you, the two key batters for Kings XI Punjab played brilliantly so far.

"If we can create some pressure and get those boys out early, and put some little bit more pressure on that middle-order early, we can restrict them to a score, stop them from scoring (big) runs," he said.

Bond said having already played two out of their three matches here so far, MI are well-versed with the conditions of the ground.

"We are reasonably confident with our batting line-up. They have put up good runs on the board so far and we are a tough batting order to stop. We have played on this ground twice and so we sort of know what to expect with the conditions, so that should help us a bit," he said.

He also said that Tuesday's match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals has indicated that the wickets might slow down as the tournament moves on, but the bowlers need to be accurate with their line and lengths.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli, cricketer Suresh Raina and ace badminton player Saina Nehwal joined others on social media demanding justice for the 19-year-old Dalit woman who was gang-raped in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. The girl succumbed to her injuries in Delhi on 29 September.

The girl was raped and assaulted a fortnight ago at a village in Hathras, some 200 km from Delhi. The teenager was dragged by her dupatta into the fields where she had been cutting grass with her family.

She was admitted to Aligarh hospital and was in ICU. She was later moved to Delhi.

The girl was found brutally injured, with her tongue cut off while the accused attempted to strangulate her.

The doctors who were treating the girl had earlier said that due to the damaged spinal cord, she has quadriplegia (paralysis in all four limbs) and was not able to breathe properly.

Indian cricket team skipper Virat Kohli condemned the heinous crime and hoped that the culprits will be brought to justice. He said that the incident was inhumane and goes beyond cruelty.

Suresh Raina demanded strict actions against the culprits. He said women of the country deserve every right to set out of their houses without any fear.

Saina Nehwal demanded that the culprits of Hathras gang-rape case should be hanged.

Bollywood celebrities including Kangana Ranaut, Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Farhan Akhtar, Richa Chadha, Yami Gautam took to Twitter to condemn the Hathras gang-rape. They too demanded stringent punishment for the accused.

Abu Dhabi: Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting had no qualms in admitting that they were "outplayed" in all departments in the IPL game against Sunrisers Hyderabad and refused to blame the pitch, saying it played better when his team batted.

This was Delhi Capitals' first loss of the season. Chasing 163 for win and to maintain a clean slate, DC were restricted to 147 for seven at the Shaikh Zayed Stadium on Tuesday night.

Asked if the conditions made the difference in the game, Ponting insisted that SRH executed their plans better than his team.

"I don't think the conditions were that different. The grounds are bigger, there are bigger square boundaries here. (But) At the end of the day, we were just outplayed by Sunrisers Hyderabad," Ponting said at the post-match press conference.

"We were a little bit off from our absolute best. SRH had good top-order partnerships and they rotated the strike well, and a few of them made big scores. So, that was the difference in the game," the Australian great added.

Opener Jonny Bairstow's sublime fifty was complemented by a stellar bowling effort from Rashid Khan as Sunrisers Hyderabad opened their account in the 13th edition of the league.

Speaking about Delhi Capitals' top-order batsmen, Ponting said, "If you have one of those batsman that go on and make a big score, like if one of those guys goes on and gets a 60 or 70 plus score, then we probably win the game.

"When we look back now, we were only 15 runs away at the end of the game. So, you can break that down in any way that you want."

"At the Delhi Capitals, we don't sit back and blame any one person, we lost the game as a team."

Even though captain Shreyas Iyer, who opted to field after winning the toss, said after the game that the wicket had become two-paced in the second innings, Ponting believed that the conditions were better when DC batted.

"Visually today, it looked like a really good wicket. A little bit of grass on it, it was nice and hard. As we saw (with) the new ball, there wasn't a lot of bounce," he said.

"Warner and Bairstow played the conditions really well early on. They got the boundaries when they needed to, ran the twos exceptionally well," added Ponting.

"The wicket might have been slightly better in the second innings which is disappointing for us, having won the toss and deciding to chase.

"We felt there might be a bit of dew in the ground and having just walked the outfield now, there was dew, so no excuses from us. We were outplayed."

Ponting also heaped praise on DC's lead pacer Kagiso Rabada, who continued to impress by taking two wickets.

"He's just the ultimate competitor. He loves pitting himself against some of the best batsmen in the world. He has performed exceptionally well for the Delhi Capitals," the former Australian captain said.

The Delhi Capitals head coach also added that the side had aimed to target SRH spinner Abhishek Sharma, but couldn't execute the plan well.

"We were looking to target Abhishek Sharma and he just snuck away from us a little bit. Rashid Khan dismissed Shreyas Iyer, which meant that Abhishek was able to get away with bowling to a new batsman.

"We targeted his third and fourth over but didn't get as many as we needed to. The game started to slip away from that moment. They executed their yorkers better than we did."

Dhaka: Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman rues missing out on playing in the IPL and the perks that come with it after the postponement of his national team's tour of Sri Lanka amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Monday, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hasan had asked Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to reschedule the three-match Test series next month, as the board wasn't willing to comply with the 14-day quarantine rule proposed by the host nation in view of the pandemic.

"It would have been great to play the Test series. Sri Lanka's proposal to have us quarantined for 14 days didn't seem possible for us," Mustafizur was quoted by Cricbuzz.

"You can't sit in your room before such an important series, no matter how hard you train. BCB tried, but the 14-day quarantine is their law. I think we should respect it.

"If the BCB knew that the Sri Lanka series would be postponed, they would have given me the NOC (No Objection Certificate) for IPL. But whatever happens, happens for the best. I may have earned BDT (Bangladesh Taka) 1 crore had I played the IPL," he added.

The pacer was not given the NOC to take part in the IPL due to national commitments after Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders contemplated signing him.

The BCB had earlier refused to give Mustafizur NOC for taking part in the Pakistan Super League in 2015-16 due to injury concerns. The board had compensated him with BDT Taka 30 Lakh.

However, according to the website, BCB's Cricket Operations chairman Akram Khan has made it clear that the board would not give any compensation to him this time.

A high on confidence Rajasthan Royals will look to continue their winning momentum when they face Kolkata Knight Riders in the 12th match of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) on Wednesday.

RR have enjoyed an electric start to their IPL 2020 campaign, winning both of their opening matches in some style. While they beat CSK by 16 runs after posting 216 runs on board batting first, Sanju Samson and Rahul Tewatia stole the limelight as the Jaipur-based franchise chased down a record target of 224 against Kings XI Punjab on Sunday.

Tewatia, who was on 17 from 23 at one stage, had a dream outing against the Punjab franchise, going on to slam 53 runs off just 31 balls to perfectly set-up the platform for an RR win. He and Samson built a 61-run stand for the third wicket before the Kerala batsman was dismissed by Mohammed Shami. And although Tewatia and Riyan Parag were dismissed later on, the English duo of Jofra Archer and Tom Curran held their nerve to beat KXIP by four wickets.

Rajasthan Royals scripted the highest-ever successful run chase in the IPL, when they overcame KXIP. Sportzpics

Samson, who has scored 74 and 85 in the first two games, will continue playing an important role in RR’s batting lineup, and as always, much will be expected from him as well as skipper Steve Smith, who has also enjoyed a positive start with scores of 69 and 50.

Samson also has the best strike-rate (214.86) so far in IPL 2020, after aggregating 159 runs from the first two games. He also ranks fourth on the highest run-getters (159) list this season, behind CSK’s Faf du Plessis (173) and the KXIP duo of Mayank Agarwal (221) and KL Rahul (222).

Jos Buttler played his first game for RR this season against KXIP after serving his mandatory quarantine coming from England, and will be one to watch out for despite failing to impress in that clash.

The experienced pace duo of Archer and Jaydev Unadkat, however, are yet to fire, and will be hoping to make an impact in the game.

Meanwhile, KKR are coming off a thumping win over Sunrisers Hyderabad, as Shubman Gill’s knock of 70 propelled them to chase down 145 with two overs to spare.

KKR boast of Eoin Morgan and Andre Russell - two reliable batsmen who could be a threat for bowlers on their day. There were even talks of Russell being promoted up the order before the tournament, but the team management have so far not given any intention of doing so. Russell came out to bat at No 6 in the first game against Mumbai Indians, while KKR did not have to rely on him for the chase against SRH.

While Pat Cummins went wicketless for 49 runs in KKR’s contest against MI, he did pick up a wicket against SRH, finishing with figures of 1/19. It may be just the initial stages of the campaign, but Kuldeep Yadav has endured a silent start, remaining wicketless in the two matches.

Here's all you need to know about when and where to watch the RR vs KKR game:

Abu Dhabi: Bolstered by the inclusion of Kane Williamson, Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper David Warner is focussed on adding depth and power to his team's fragile middle-order as it moves forward in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Opener Jonny Bairstow's sublime fifty was complemented by Williamson's 26-ball 41 and a stellar bowling effort from Rashid Khan as Sunrisers Hyderabad outplayed Delhi Capitals by 15 runs to open their account in the 13th IPL here on Tuesday.

"We were on track to get 170-180, there is talk of our middle order not being that good, but we put our game together against Delhi and we backed ourselves, we played fluently and we got ourselves a good total," Warner said at the virtual post-match press conference.

To strengthen SRH's batting, the seasoned Williamson was drafted in at the expense of Mohammad Nabi, but the skipper assured the Afghanistan all-rounder that he would again get his chances.

David Warner scored 33-ball 45 in SRH's win. Image courtesy: Vipin Pawar / Sportzpics for BCCI

"It was a big call but, at the end of the day, if we get our top four batting right and back our bowlers, we will come good. For us, it is important to establish in the middle.

"Moving forward, Nabi will come in as well," said the prolific left-handed batsman, who shared a 77-run opening stand with Jonny Bairstow.

Defending 163, leg-spinner Rashid returned very impressive figures of 3/14, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar scalped two wickets and T Natarajan and Khaleel Ahmed (1/43) chipped in with one apiece to restrict Delhi to 147 for seven.

Warner was full of praise for his strike bowler Rashid, who was named the Man of the Match.

"Rashid knows what he has to do, the way he delivered for us against Delhi was great. He knows what to do, he bowled stump to stump, he knew he had a big role against Delhi with young Abhishek (Sharma) at the other end.

"Abhishek bowled his four overs and he was just hit during his last over, an extra bit of pressure was added on Rashid and he was outstanding," said Warner.

SRH were asked to bat first after the coin landed in the favour of Delhi Capitals skipper Shreyas Iyer.

"I think putting runs on the board, batting first was good, we lost the toss so obviously we had to bat first. I think Delhi bowled really well in the powerplay, they restricted me and Jonny.

"They executed really well in the powerplay, they had good fields for us, all in all, we had a good game...the way we approached it in the middle with Williamson coming, credit to our bowlers as well, especially the way they bowled in the middle," he added.

The match also saw Jammu and Kashmir's Abdul Samad making his IPL debut and Warner said he will look to encourage youngsters in the team.

During his brief stay in the middle, Samad smashed a six and a four to remain unbeaten on 12.

"It is great to give these young guys an opportunity because where else to show your talent when you can do it against the world's best. You need to have that belief that you can do well.

"We needed someone at the back end. We brought him in because we knew he bowls leg-spinners as well. We knew what he was capable of. He is a good power-hitter. I have seen him hit long balls and I was very impressed.

"The great thing about youth is enthusiasm and passion. They want to learn, they are really picking our brains and trying to get the upper edge. We want to play with freedom. Let them play calm and clear," Warner said.

Abu Dhabi: Delhi Capitals skipper Shreyas Iyer has been slapped with a fine of Rs 12 lakh after his team maintained a slow over-rate against Sunrisers Hyderabad in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match on Tuesday.

Given that this was his first offence of the season, Iyer was fined Rs 12 lakh under the IPL's Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offence.

"Delhi Capitals Captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during their Dream11 Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Abu Dhabi on 29 September 2020," an IPL release stated.

"As it was his team's first offence of the season under the IPL's Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Iyer was fined Rs 12 lakh," it added.

Last week, Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli was found guilty of his team maintaining a slow-over rate against Kings XI Punjab and was also fined Rs 12 lakh.

Iyer suffered his first defeat of the season as Delhi lost to Sunrisers by 15 runs at the Shaikh Zayed Stadium on Tuesday.

Opener Jonny Bairstow's sublime fifty was complemented by a stellar bowling effort from spinner Rashid Khan as Sunrisers outplayed Delhi to open their account in the 13th edition of the league.

Chasing 163 to maintain a clean slate, Delhi were slow off the blocks and struggled to force the pace for a major part of their innings.

Dubai: Kolkata Knight Riders will have to bat out of their skin to stop a marauding Rajasthan Royals when the two teams clash in an IPL match at the Dubai International Stadium on Wednesday.

Having started off as underdogs, the Royals have taken the IPL by storm, chasing down the highest tournament total 224 against Kings XI Punjab in their last match.

In two wins from two matches, the Royals have got past the 200-mark with ease. In their success, they have found two stars in Sanju Samson and Rahul Tewatia, who have outshone marquee players.

Talented opener Shubman Gill's unbeaten half-century, aided by Morgan's late firepower overtook SRH's below-par 145 with two overs to spare in KKR's last match. Sportzpics

In his second coming at the Royals, little known Haryana all-rounder Tewatia has got instant stardom for his 31-ball 53 against KXIP, which helped the side chase down a record 224 with three balls to spare against KXIP.

Struggling to get off the blocks quickly, Tewatia, who was on 17 from 23 deliveries with the team needing 51 from the last three overs, suddenly woke up from the slumber, smacking left-arm quick Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over to turn the tables for RR.

But the season so far belongs to Samson— the wicketkeeper from Kerala.

Boasting of the season's highest strike-rate of 214.86, Samson has two successive half-centuries that has once again put him in contention for a longer rope in the Indian team as a keeper-batsman.

Skipper Steve Smith has been ever reliable, striking two half-centuries, while opener Jos Buttler will be waiting to explode.

To match or even surpass the Royals, KKR have the biggest stars in Andre Russell to go along with reigning World Cup winning English skipper Eoin Morgan, one of the best in limited-overs cricket.

But both Morgan and Russell have got limited opportunities so far, having dropped down to No 5 and 6 respectively.

The fixture might just finally see them bat higher up, especially the star Jamaican, who was their highest run-getter last season with 510 runs at a astonishing strike rate of 204.81.

Having started off with a familiar defeat to Mumbai Indians in their opener, Kolkata Knight Riders put up a determined show to bounce back against a sloppy Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Talented opener Shubman Gill's unbeaten half-century, aided by Morgan's late firepower overtook SRH's below-par 145 with two overs to spare.

Come Wednesday, it may well be a run feast with no target 'safe' against the Royals.

Dubai has been host to both the Super-Over matches this season. The venue will be an unchartered territory for both the teams who will be playing here for the first time this season.

For the record, the teams batting first have won all the five matches in Dubai so far.

Teams (from)

Kolkata Knight Riders: Dinesh Karthik (C and WK), Andre Russell, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Kuldeep Yadav, Lockie Ferguson, Nitish Rana, Prasidh Krishna, Rinku Singh, Sandeep Warrier, Shivam Mavi, Shubman Gill, Siddhesh Lad, Sunil Narine, Pat Cummins, Eoin Morgan, Varun Chakravarthy, Tom Banton, Rahul Tripathi, Chris Green, M Siddharth, Nikhil Naik, Ali Khan.

Rajasthan Royals: Steve Smith (captain), Jos Buttler, Robin Uthappa, Sanju Samson, Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Manan Vohra, Kartik Tyagi, Akash Singh, Oshane Thomas, Andrew Tye, David Miller, Tom Curran, Aniruddha Joshi, Shreyas Gopal, Riyan Parag, Varun Aaron, Shashank Singh, Anuj Rawat, Mahipal Lomror, Mayank Markande.

Match Starts at 7:30pm IST.

The two matches before the clash between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals produced four scores more than 200, including the highest second-innings score in IPL history. Thus, when Hyderabad put a mere 162/4 on the scoreboard, Delhi were touted as the favourites. However, with its larger ground and slower pitch, Abu Dhabi provided challenges entirely different from the venues in Sharjah and Dubai. That, combined with sustained accurate bowling, helped Hyderabad ease to a 15-run win and secure their first points in this edition.

Unlike other editions, IPL 2020 will be played across a mere three venues, which meant that the pitches were bound to get slower as the tournament progressed. What was probably not expected was that it would happen this early. While the pitches at Sharjah and Dubai are still holding firm, teams will change their strategies and starting XIs in the subsequent matches in Abu Dhabi. Spinners, even batsmen who can fill in with a couple of overs of spin, may do the bulk of the bowling in days to come.

Rashid Khan starred for SRH with a three-wicket haul. Image courtesy: Pankaj Nangia / Sportzpics for BCCI

But let that not take the sheen off the bowling performance of Hyderabad, especially Rashid Khan and T Natarajan. They went in with exactly five specialist bowlers, with only Kane Williamson (and perhaps Abdul Samad) as back-ups. It was an enormous risk, for one bowler having an off day might have ruined everything for them.

Only that it did not happen. Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck with his fifth ball. He conceded only seven runs in his two-over spell in the Powerplay overs. Then, Natarajan and Khaleel Ahmed stepped up, and Delhi struggled to only 34/1 after six overs. However, things were looking up towards the end of the powerplay, for Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer had upped the tempo, having scored 19 off the last two overs.

The match was evenly poised, and it had come down to how Delhi handled the Hyderabad spinners, Rashid and Abhishek Sharma. Abhishek’s first over set the tone. He bowled slow, straight, and full, restricting the batsmen to drives down the ground that fetched singles. It took Dhawan four balls to try to step out and force the pace, but it did not work.

With Abhishek turning out to be difficult to score off, it was clear that Rashid would pose a serious threat. Iyer tried to counter that by stepping out and going over the top. He ended up holing to deep extra cover. Abhishek and Rashid bowled three overs apiece, conceding 29 between them, almost sealing the match. Amidst all this, Rashid had Dhawan brilliantly caught by Jonny Bairstow.

Even in the next over, Abhishek conceded just three runs off the first four balls. Rishabh Pant ruined his otherwise excellent figures (3.4-0-22-0) by finishing the over with two sixes, but they came too late.

Then came the fourteenth over, where Natarajan bowled five yorkers. He would bowl five more in the 18th, including the wicket of Marcus Stoinis, demonstrating that he needs to be considered more seriously as a death bowler. With Bhuvneshwar and Rashid getting more wickets, the match was done.

It might have been a comprehensive win, but Hyderabad are yet to strike the right balance. Jonny Bairstow scored 53, the highest in the match, but it took him 48 balls. It was a scratchy innings where he hit just two fours and a six, and looked far from convincing.

With David Warner, Williamson, and Rashid as certainties, and Mohammad Nabi likely to play key roles as the pitch gets slower, Bairstow’s place in the XI does not look too certain. However, that will force them to get in a wicketkeeper – Wriddhiman Saha, probably – ahead of Priyam Garg, who has now not batted twice in a row. Nabi’s inclusion will also address that sixth bowler problem.

Delhi Capitals' experienced opener Shikhar Dhawan has failed to get going in IPL 2020 so far. Pankaj Nangia / Sportzpics for BCCI

Delhi’s issues lie elsewhere. The two sixes off Abhishek are the only ones Pant has hit in the tournament so far, and he is one of the most prolific six-hitters in IPL history. It is important for Delhi to allow Pant a free rein, for that is when he has always been at his best.

The other problem is at the top. Dhawan’s 69 runs in the tournament have come at a pedestrian strike rate of 115, and he is clearly not at his best yet. Unless he gets those boundaries flowing, Delhi’s powerplay scores may fall short of expectations. They do have a like-for-like replacement in Ajinkya Rahane, who may be someone they would want to consider.

Spearheaded by Kagiso Rabada, Delhi’s three-pronged pace attack looks potent, but with time they would have to draft in that third spinner to bowl in tandem with Amit Mishra and Axar Patel. Sandeep Lamichhane is an obvious choice.

If they have to opt for an Indian option in the absence of the injured R Ashwin, they may want to have a look at Delhi all-rounder Lalit Yadav, who has impressed with his boundary-hitting and economic off-breaks.

Abu Dhabi: Sunrisers Hyderabad's main strike bowler Rashid Khan struggled to hold back tears, dedicating his Man of the Match performance against Delhi Capitals to his mother and biggest fan who died earlier this year.

Rashid's triple strike made all the difference, allowing Sunrisers to defend 162 for their first win of the IPL season on Tuesday.

"It has been a tough one-and-a half-years for me. First, my dad expired and then my mom (in June this year). And it took a bit of time for me to come back. My mom was my biggest fan, especially in the IPL and when I was the MoM, she would always talk to me through the night," recalled an emotional Rashid at the post-match presentation.

Rashid said he did not feel the pressure going into the field and reaped the benefits of bowling quicker than usual on a slow surface.

"I bowled quicker today, when I started and bowled my first ball, I realised it. You need two, three balls to know what the right pace is. In these conditions, you need to bowl back of a length to the batsmen.

"Warner (captain) always backs me and tells me that you know what's best for the team. Only when things aren't going my way I go and ask the captain what to do."

Losing skipper Shreyas Iyer said his team did not read the conditions well in their first game here.

"They outplayed us in all three departments and credit to them for that. 162 was a par score on this wicket. It was surprising and in the second innings, it (pitch) was two-paced. When I went in, the ball wasn't coming onto the bat. We thought dew would come on but we can't give any reasons at this moment," he said.

"We didn't execute the way we wanted to. Lot of learnings from this wicket and conditions. Ricky went in (during the time-out) and we needed one batsman to take a chance as the required rate was pretty high.

"The ground is very big and we didn't capitalize on taking doubles. We knew boundaries are big here and doubles will be key for us. It didn't work out for us, hopefully next time we can maximise the opportunities," he added.

Karachi: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is trying to pacify the six franchise owners of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) who have taken the board to the Lahore High Court over the financial model of the T20 event.

The owners of Lahore Qalandars, Quetta Gladiators, Multan Sultans, Karachi Kings, Peshawar Zalmi, and Islamabad United have, in a joint petition filed in the court, made it clear they had lost billions of rupees since the inception of the tournament in the absence of a viable financial model.

According to the franchisees, the financial model was tilted in favour of the PCB which had earned billions from the PSL in the last five years, even as the team owners suffered losses.

At a preliminary hearing held last week, the PCB's legal team took a strong stance on the petition filed by the owners, but sources, aware of the developments, said behind the scenes efforts are being made to settle the matter out of court.

"The PCB realises the gravity of the situation as the PSL is one of its most successful brands and due to the existing economic conditions in Pakistan and globally, it would not be easy for sale of the franchises if the situation got out of control," the source said.

The main objection of the franchisees is that the PCB, despite repeated assurances, had failed to modify the financial model of the league.

The judge, who will hear the matter again on Wednesday, had asked the PCB to submit a detailed reply to the petition filed by the franchise owners.

"Outside channels are being used to convince the franchise owners to withdraw their petition and assurances have also been given to them that the board is willing to sit down with them and address their grievances," the source added.

Dubai: Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) spinner Washington Sundar is in awe of his superstar teammate AB de Villiers and feels that the South African swashbuckler's legendary ability to perform multiple tasks, including wicket-keeping, lend balance to the IPL side.

The South African kept wickets in RCB's win over defending champions Mumbai Indians on Monday, taking the keeping gloves from an off-colour Josh Philippe. He also smashed a 24-ball half-century to grab the man of the match award.

After the game, Sundar wondered if there is any job in the world that de Villiers cannot do.

"Tell me one thing that he cannot do, whatever the team needs him to do he will do, he will be more than happy to do and he has been doing that for so many years for RCB," Sundar said of the 36-year-old star, who has retired from international cricket.

"It adds a lot of balance and he behind the wickets also gives bowlers a lot of thought process and he adds a lot of value to the team," he added.

Speaking about Monday's match, Sundar said pacer Navdeep Saini conceding just seven runs in the Super Over was a reflection of his tough character.

After the match was tied courtesy blistering half-centuries by Ishan Kishan and Kieron Pollard, Saini managed to bowl an economical Super Over, conceding seven runs, chased effortlessly by RCB to script a memorable win.

"He (Saini) has been amazing not just this year but the last couple of years also. He has been very good and he is going from strength to strength," Sundar said.

"He did the same thing for the Indian team also, to be able to bowl such a 19th over with two set batsmen, and when Hardik (Pandya) and Pollard are at the crease in the Super Over, to be able to give just seven runs is amazing.

"It shows so much character and how much he has got that hunger (to succeed), so much credit should go to him," added the spinner.

In a game where over 400 runs were scored, Sundar returned with tidy figures of 1/12 and sounded pleased with his performance.

"I did some planning coming to this game and I was happy that I was given this role, and I enjoy bowling in power-play. It is all the more fun when two great batsmen are playing and when you have got two fielders outside the circle.

"(I am) very glad that the captain has got so much confidence (for me)," he said.

However, according to Sundar, the challenge will be to keep delivering throughout the tournament. "I should be able to do this and win games for RCB," he said.

Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore managed to beat Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians on Monday after an exciting game of cricket at IPL 2020.

Be it the rise of Ishan Kishan, who fell just one run short of a century, or the economical bowling by Washington Sundar, who gave only 12 runs in four overs, the RCB-MI match had quite a few memorable moments and Twitter celebrated all of them. Here are some Twitter reactions from Monday's game.

Delhi Capitals'Ravichandran Ashwin said the twists and turns in the RCB vs MI game came just when “one thought that it was going to be tough to beat the heat from [the previous match between the Kings and Rajasthan Royals]”.

Harsha Bhogle shared similar sentiments.

Former South Africa cricketer JP Duminy was impressed with the “back to back thrillers”.

Kolkata Knight Riders captain Dinesh Karthik was left in awe of IPL as the first 10 matches of the league had two matches that ended in a tie and went to the super over.

India cricket team head coach Ravi Shastri praised Washington Sundar’s miserly bowling as he called it the “Best IPL performance so far in 2020”.

Sachin Tendulkar congratulated both the sides for giving cricket lovers a wonderful game. He did not forget to appreciate Washington’s spell.

Many, including Yuvraj Singh, opined that MI should have sent Pollard-Kishan duo to bat in the super over.

Rohit Sharma explained later that the youngster was tired but fans were left wondering whether the results would have been different if Kishan came down to bat again.

Here are some other former and current players who were left “speechless” after the match.

Dubai: Mumbai Indians' decision to not send Ishan Kishan, who was striking the ball hard and clean, to bat in the Super Over surprised many but their head coach Mahela Jayawardene defended the tactic saying they had faith in their experienced players to do the job.

It was wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan, who with his blistering knock of 99 runs brought Mumbai Indians back in a stiff 202-run chase along with Kieron Pollard (60).

However, the match had to be decided via Super Over, where the defending champions opted to send Hardik Pandya with Pollard. The strategy backfired as they could only manage seven runs off Navdeep Saini and lost the match to Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Jayawardene said, Kishan felt tired after giving his all during the contest.

"If anyone could see, he (Kishan) was very tired at that moment and we were thinking that we probably need a couple of fresh guys who can go and hit the ball," the Sri Lankan said at the post-match press conference.

"It is quite easy to say in hindsight this and that, but Polly (Pollard) and Hardik had done the job in the past in those Super Overs, two experienced guys who are capable of doing that. So you take a chance on these calls and it could have gone either way. If we had 10-12 runs anything could have happened," explained the coach.

Post the match, MI skipper Rohit Sharma too added that Kishan was not feeling fresh. "He was drained out and was not comfortable. We thought we could send him in but he was not feeling fresh and Hardik is somebody we trust hitting the long-balls but it is not coming off."

Jayawardene had to admit that seven runs were too small to defend even for a bowler of the calibre of Jasprit Bumrah."In the Super Over, we had three dots, so that's a killer for you because we lost a wicket and then we had a couple of more dots.

"We needed to make sure that we played some smart shots, get that early boundary away, which we couldn't, we had one, but a couple of boundaries would have been really handy especially when Booms (Bumrah) comes to bowl."

"Ab (De Villiers) and Booms is a great tussle, they went at each other, a bit of a boxing game. We probably didn't have enough runs for Booms to defend but we were still very close," added the Sri Lankan batting great.

Jayawardene said when they lost wickets early, the message for Kishan was to take the game deep.

"During the middle period, we just wanted to make sure that he bats through the innings. We knew that he could put their bowling under pressure, so the message for him was to take it deep, because we had lost a few wickets, so he did that brilliantly and took his chance, played some really good shots.

"It was a brilliant partnership between him and Polly and (they) almost got us home," the head coach said.
