Christchurch: India's top-order frittered away a golden chance with another shoddy batting as New Zealand regained complete control after Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah's hostile fast-bowling spell had given the visitors a slender first-innings lead in the second Test on Sunday.

India's Cheteshwar Pujari reacts after he was out bowled by New Zealand's Trent Boult. AP

Shami (4/81 in 23.1 overs) and Bumrah (3/62 in 22 overs) were brilliant in their execution, dismissing New Zealand for 235 in 73.1 overs as they showed why they are one of deadliest fast bowling pair in Test match cricket.

However, India's top-order failed miserably once again as New Zealand bounced back, reducing India to 90 for six at stumps on day two as a three-day finish is on the cards.

India is now effectively 97 runs ahead with only four wickets in hand and it will take a miraculous effort to avert another series whitewash after the ODIs.

Trent Boult (3/12 in 9 overs) got Mayank Agarwal (3) and Cheteshwar Pujara (24) with conventional inswingers that tails into right-handers.

Prithvi Shaw (14) was out in familiar fashion, fending a short ball from Tim Southee, while skipper Virat Kohli's (14) indecisive footwork brought his downfall once again.

Vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, who was hit on the helmet, paid the price for an ugly shot, while Umesh Yadav didn't survive a rampaging Boult after he was inexplicably sent in as nightwatchman when nearly half an hour was left.

A target of 250 in the fourth innings could well be a challenge for the Black Caps as there is still something in the track for the speed merchants despite batsmen getting a value for their shots.

India would have ideally hoped that skipper Kohli would end his dreadful tour of New Zealand with one big knock but it was not to be as Colin de Grandhomme trapped the Indian captain leg before with an off-cutter.

First two sessions belonged to Shami and Bumrah, who were nothing short of brilliant with their precision length, sideways movement and an occasional heavy ball that was slipped in between.

Ravindra Jadeja (2/22 in 10 overs) did exactly what was required. He also took a stunning acrobatic one-hander in the deep to dismiss Neil Wagner (21), which will be remembered for years to come.

Once Umesh Yadav (1/46 in 18 overs) provided the breakthrough removing Tom Blundell (30), it was Bumrah and Shami, who were relentless bowling that probing off-stump line which never let any of their batsmen settle.

Bumrah must have beaten the bat at least on 15 occasions, including that of opposition's only half-centurion Tom Latham (52 off 122 balls), who never looked settled during his stay.

The two deliveries that stood out during the second day's play was one by Bumrah that got rid of Kane Williamson (3) and other by Shami, who sent back Latham.

Bumrah bowled one with the angle that came back a shade and it seemed like Williamson was in two minds whether to withdraw the bat or play defensively. The half-hearted prod only resulted in a nick that went into Rishabh Pant's gloves.

In case of Latham, Shami beautifully set him up during his second spell of the morning. There were a few away going deliveries which he got thick outside edges.

Shami then bowled on the fourth stump and Latham shouldered arms to leave the ball and it turned out to be an error of judgement with the ball cutting back enough to peg the off-stump back.

Having got five wickets in the first session, India were back in the game and Bumrah got a couple within first few minutes after lunch as BJ Watling (0) and Tim Southee (0) were dismissed in a space of three deliveries.

Once de Grandhomme (26), who was playing a useful hand, was cleaned up by Jadeja, India did endure a frustrating one hour period in which Kyle Jamieson (49) and Wagner added 51 runs for the ninth wicket, something that would now come back to haunt the Indians.

Preview: Zimbabwe will play their first ODI since July 2019, before which they were clean swept in five of their last six bilateral series. They now face a stiff challenge against Bangladesh, who have defeated them in each of the last 13 matches.

The two teams come into the ODI series following a one-off Test where Zimbabwe were undone by Bangladesh's batting masterclass, where they went down by an innings and 106 runs. Former skipper Sean Williams returns to the fold for Zimbabwe. But they would need more from youngsters Brendon Taylor and Craig Ervine. They have a new ODI captain in Chamu Chibhabha, the all-rounder, who's been given the role on an interim basis.

The bowling line-up displays an unfamiliar look. The senior men Christopher Mpofu and Donald Tiripano will seek assistance from youngster Charlton Tshuma, who made his international debut in the Test. The spin department comprises of finger-spinners Tinashe Kamunhukamwe and Ainsley Ndlovu to go with the all-round abilities of Williams and Sikander Raza.

Bangladesh, despite the significant changes to their squad, seem to have enough firepower to maintain ascendancy. Mashrafe Mortaza returns and will lead the team for the last time in ODI cricket, as confirmed last week. They will miss the all-round services of Soumya Sarkar, who misses out for personal reasons, but the experienced trio of Tamim Iqbal, Mahmudullah and the in-form Mushfiqur Rahim round off a formidable batting core.

11:38 (IST)

What a day of Test cricket we witnessed. As many as 16 wickets fell through the course of the day's play, six of which are Indian. A score of 90/6 doesn't inspire much confidence and unless Vihari and Pant conjure up a magical partnership tomorrow, their chances of levelling the two-Test series look very difficult. Can't wait to see how the day unfolds on Monday. For now, it's a goodbye from us.

11:38 (IST)

Well, India are in a spot of bother here. They have thrown away the advantage as the pendulum has swung towards New Zealand at the fag end of the day. But from New Zealand's point of view, it is good to see Boult bowling at his usual best after being off coloured in the previous few innings. India have to bat out their skins tomorrow to get close to the 200-run mark.

11:36 (IST)

Cheteshwar Pujara dismissed by bowlers most times in Tests:

9 : Nathan Lyon
7 : James Anderson
4 : Stuart Broad, Josh Hazlewood, Ben Stokes, TRENT BOULT*

There were 16 wickets fell today - the most in a day’s play at this venue.

11:34 (IST)

After 36 overs,India 90/6 ( Hanuma Vihari 5 , Rishabh Pant (W) 1)

Boult rattles the stumps with a vicious inswinger once again, this time dismissing Yadav for 1 with India losing their sixth wicket in the process. Out walks Rishabh Pant at No 8, and he gets off the mark right away with a single. A run and a wicket from the over, and that will be all for today.

India crumble to 90/6 at stumps after yet another batting collapse, with Vihari and Pant batting on 5 and 1 respectively.

11:28 (IST)

BOWLED EM! Boult hits timber once again! This time gets rid of the nightwatchman Umesh Yadav as India lose their sixth wicket with less than 100 on board. Boult thinks it's stumps and prepares to collect his belongings from the umpire, only to be told that there will be a few more deliveries bowled today. IND 89/6

Umesh b Boult 1(12)

11:27 (IST)

After 35 overs,India 89/5 ( Umesh Yadav 1 , Hanuma Vihari 5)

Four off the over, with Vihari collecting his first boundary of the innings with a well-timed cut through the point region off the fourth delivery of the over.

11:26 (IST)

What is a good target?

11:25 (IST)

FOUR! A much-needed boundary to lift the Indian spirits after the flurry of wickets. Vihari gets on top of the bounce and cuts this through point. IND 89/5

11:23 (IST)

After 34 overs,India 85/5 ( Umesh Yadav 1 , Hanuma Vihari 1)

Boult delivers a body blow to the visitors by breaching Pujara's defence with a spectacular inswinger, rattling the stumps as the latter's innings comes to an end in the 88th delivery. Vihari walks out to bat next, with India's chances of posting 200 looking bleak now.

11:19 (IST)

OUT! Pujara's undone by a beauty from Boult, as he departs after putting up a stubborn resistance that had given the visitors hope of going past the 200-mark. The ball swung back in sharply, going through the batsman's defence with Pujara attempting to block this. IND 84/5

Pujara b Boult 24(88)

11:17 (IST)

After 33 overs,India 84/4 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 24 , Umesh Yadav 1)

Pujara clips the ball down the ground off the first delivery, and without much protection in that region, Jamieson has to give the ball a lengthy chase, allowing Pujara to set off for the non-striker's end. Umesh pulls behind square to get off the mark with a single. Pujara guides the ball behind square on the leg side off the penultimate delivery, coming back for a third as Boult cuts the ball in front of the boundary to save one run. Seven from the over.

11:16 (IST)

Rahane's scratchy innings finally comes to an end. He was literally struggling out there and was troubled by the short-pitched stuff. By the way, Umesh has been promoted up the order, probably as a night watchman. But there are quite a few overs still left in the day's play.

11:14 (IST)

After 32 overs,India 77/4 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 18 , Umesh Yadav 0)

Boult brought back in place of Jamieson now, with the Black Caps hoping to get rid of Pujara before close of play. Leg bye off the third delivery, followed by Umesh getting an thick inside edge off the last ball that deflects the ball towards the slip cordon for a dot. Just one from the over.

11:09 (IST)

After 31 overs,India 76/4 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 18 , Umesh Yadav 0)

Rahane's resistance finally comes to an end as he chops the ball onto the furniture off a delivery that stays a touch low. Out walks nightwatchman Umesh Yadav at No 6, the visitors hoping Rahane's exit is their last dismissal for the day. Four leg-byes, a single and a wicket from the over.

11:06 (IST)

OUT! Rahane's stay at the crease finally comes to an end as he ends up chopping the ball onto his stumps! Animated celebrations for Wagner! The batsman tried to pull this towards fine leg, but got an underedge thanks to the ball staying a touch low. IND 72/4

Rahane b Wagner 9(43)

11:04 (IST)

After 30 overs,India 71/3 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 17 , Ajinkya Rahane 9)

Jamieson switches to a round-the-wicket angle to Rahane for his back-of-length deliveries, and it nearly yields Rahane's wicket in the last delivery, with the ball ultimately falling short of backward point. Maiden over for Jamieson.

11:02 (IST)

After 29 overs,India 71/3 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 17 , Ajinkya Rahane 9)

Wagner continues to direct the short stuff at Rahane, who seems to have recovered from the blow and looks determined to withstand the trial by fire that he's going through at the moment. Just one from this over.

10:56 (IST)

After 28 overs,India 70/3 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 17 , Ajinkya Rahane 8)

Another nastly looking blow to Rahane on the helmet by a short delivery from Jamieson, and this time India physio Nitin Patel jogs out to the centre to do a quick check up. Pujara plays out the remainder of the over without setting off for a run.

10:55 (IST)

Wagner looks very frustrated out there. Perhaps coming into the attack as the fifth bowler has hurt his ego. Also, CDG dropped an easy catching opportunity off his bowling. Maybe it's time for Kane to have a quick chat with him.

10:49 (IST)

After 27 overs,India 69/3 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 17 , Ajinkya Rahane 8)

Rahane plays another ambitious shot after that mysterious pull towards deep square-leg, this time uppercutting the ball behind point with the ball landing just short of Blundell near the boundary, allowing him to set off for a single in the meantime.

10:42 (IST)

After 26 overs,India 68/3 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 17 , Ajinkya Rahane 7)

Rahane gloves a back-of-length delivery from Jamieson towards the fine leg fence for a boundary off the first delivery. Jamieson then responds with a series of snorters to test the Indian No 5 batsman, with the penultimate delivery hitting him on the helmet. Five from the over.

10:38 (IST)

FOUR! Back-of-length delivery from Jamieson going down leg, Rahane gloves this wide of the keeper to collect his first boundary. IND 67/3

10:37 (IST)

After 25 overs,India 63/3 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 17 , Ajinkya Rahane 3)

DROPPED! Rahane goes for a suicidal pull towards deep square-leg off a back-of-length delivery from Wagner, only for CdG to spill the chance while putting in a slide near the boundary rope. His teammates are in a state of disbelief after that drop, given his sharp fielding skills. Just two from this over.

10:34 (IST)

After 24 overs,India 61/3 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 17 , Ajinkya Rahane 2)

Jamieson's back in the attack, replacing de Grandhomme. A leg bye is all that's added to the Indian total in this over, with their lead now worth 68.

10:29 (IST)

After 23 overs,India 60/3 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 17 , Ajinkya Rahane 2)

Pujara and Rahane rotate the strike between themselves while Wagner continues to bowl a series of testing deliveries, including the odd bouncer or two, with three singles coming from this over.

10:24 (IST)

After 22 overs,India 57/3 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 15 , Ajinkya Rahane 1)

Rahane opens his account with a single off the first delivery after tapping the ball towards midwicket. Williamson's dive near mid off in the second delivery restricts Pujara to just a single. Two from the over.

10:21 (IST)

After 21 overs,India 55/3 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 14 , Ajinkya Rahane 0)

Wagner's brought in place of Jamieson now, and we can expect both Pujara and Rahane to be tested by a few short-pitched deliveries. Latham's at short leg, and he gets a tough chance in just the second delivery that ultimately goes begging, giving Pujara a reprieve on 14. Starts off with a maiden.

10:18 (IST)

After 20 overs,India 55/3 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 14 , Ajinkya Rahane 0)

Back-to-back maidens for de Grandhomme, with Rahane yet to get off the mark after facing 11 deliveries in his innings so far. India lead by 62 runs so far.

10:15 (IST)

‪Lowest average in a Test series for Virat Kohli: (2+ matches)‬

‪13.40 v Eng, 2014, England‬

10:15 (IST)

After 19 overs,India 55/3 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 14 , Ajinkya Rahane 0)

Pujara collects his second boundary of the innings with a drive down the ground past the diving mid off fielder to move to 14. Another 20 overs to be bowled in the day.

10:14 (IST)

There you go. CDG removes the big man. What a terrific bowler he is on these conditions! With nagging line and length, he tests both edges of the batsman. Slight lapse in concentration and he will get you. With four front-line pacers, he is the ideal back-up bowler to have for any captain.

10:11 (IST)

FOUR! Driven down the ground by Pujara, beating the mid off fielder diving to his right. IND 55/3

10:10 (IST)

After 18 overs,India 51/3 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 10 , Ajinkya Rahane 0)

It's a wicket-maiden for CdG as the all-rounder beats Kohli's inside edge and hits him on the front pad bang in front of middle to trap him leg-before for 14. Rahane's the next man in, and suddenly the prospect of going past 200 looks like a massive challenge.

10:09 (IST)

Least runs scored by Virat Kohli on a tour where he played in all the three formats:‬

‪218, New Zealand, 2020*‬

10:06 (IST)

OUT! Kohli's gone and the Black Caps definitely are on top at the moment! The ball nips back a tad and hits Kohli on the front pad bang in front of middle! And his tour of New Zealand ends in disappointment. Kohli decides against reviewing it on this occasion, given how apparent it was. IND 51/3

Kohli lbw de Grandhomme 14(30)

10:05 (IST)

After 17 overs,India 51/2 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 10 , Virat Kohli (C) 14)

Pujara sends Kohli back to the non-striker's end after working the ball towards mid on off the first delivery. Thereafter, it's mostly a series of leaves outside off as Jamieson walks away with his first maiden.

10:04 (IST)

Virat Kohli is shaping up well in this knock so far. After a few play and misses against Boult, a few crispy drives must have given him a lot of confidence. Unlike a few previous occasions, this time he is looking much more settled at the crease. Important innings this is for him and his team in the context of this series.

10:00 (IST)

After 16 overs,India 51/2 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 10 , Virat Kohli (C) 14)

Pujara works the ball behind square for a single off the first delivery of the over. Kohli plays a few drives down the ground, but is unable to set off for the non-striker's end thanks to some watertight fielding by the hosts.

09:58 (IST)

After 15 overs,India 50/2 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 9 , Virat Kohli (C) 14)

Kohli gets away with a loose shot in this over, his half-hearted uppercut sending the ball high in the air, landing near the vacant third man region, which brings up the fifty for the visitors. Given the delicacy of the situation, the Indian captain will hope to be a lot more careful going ahead.

09:54 (IST)

After 14 overs,India 48/2 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 9 , Virat Kohli (C) 12)

Change from both ends now, as Williamson brings De Grandhomme into the attack in place of Boult. The all-rounder starts his day with a maiden.

09:47 (IST)

After 13 overs,India 48/2 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 9 , Virat Kohli (C) 12)

First bowling change of the innings, with Kyle Jamieson coming into the attack in place of Tim Southee. He gets off to an expensive start however, conceding two boundaries to Kohli off the first four balls. Time for the players to have a drink now.

09:46 (IST)

FOUR! Another boundary for the Indian captain in Jamieson's first over of the day, this time playing with soft hands while keeping the ball low to place it wide of third slip. IND 48/2

09:45 (IST)

FOUR! Kohli steers the full, wide delivery from Jamieson through point to collect the second boundary of his innings, beating the fielder diving to his right. IND 44/2

09:43 (IST)

After 12 overs,India 40/2 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 9 , Virat Kohli (C) 4)

Boult bowls out his second maiden of the innings, with Pujara decide to poke the ball around sans the intent to score a run.

09:39 (IST)

After 11 overs,India 40/2 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 9 , Virat Kohli (C) 4)

The Indian skipper gets off the mark in style with a delicious drive through the midwicket region off the penultimate delivery of the over to get off the mark off the 11th delivery that he faces.

09:38 (IST)

FOUR! Superbly-timed on-drive by Kohli off Southee, maintaining perfect balance while leaning forward and playing on the up. IND 40/2

09:35 (IST)

After 10 overs,India 35/2 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 8 , Virat Kohli (C) 0)

Boult maintains an attacking line while bowling to Kohli, the ball whistling past his outside edge on a couple of occasions. The left-arm pacer though, sprays one down the leg side off the final delivery, the ball beating the diving keeper to run away for four byes.

09:32 (IST)

So the short-ball strategy has worked for the Kiwis straightway. Shaw was probably expecting the surprise delivery from Boult but not from Southee and clearly he was late on that hook shot. Meanwhile, at the other end, for Boult they have already placed a short square leg at a catching position. So, more of those bumpers are on their way I guess.

09:31 (IST)

After 9 overs,India 31/2 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 8 , Virat Kohli (C) 0)

Another major blow for the Indians as attacking opening batsman Shaw departs after getting into a tangle, lobbing the ball to Latham in the slips to depart for 14. Pujara meanwhile, collects a streaky boundary four balls later. Kohli at the crease now, and he has one final shot to collect a tall score in this tour.

09:29 (IST)

FOUR! Streaky boundary for Pujara, the ball flying between second slip and gully on this occasion. IND 31/2

Latest Updates, 2nd Test, Day 2 India vs New Zealand: Boult rattles the stumps with a vicious inswinger once again, this time dismissing Yadav for 1 with India losing their sixth wicket in the process. Out walks Rishabh Pant at No 8, and he gets off the mark right away with a single. A run and a wicket from the over, and that will be all for today.India crumble to 90/6 at stumps after yet another batting collapse, with Vihari and Pant batting on 5 and 1 respectively.

Day 1 report: Jamieson took five for 45 as New Zealand dismissed India for 242 after tea on day one of the second and final Test on Saturday before consolidating their advantage by reaching the close of play on 63 without loss.

Playing only his second Test after making his debut in the 10-wicket victory in Wellington last week, the tall right-armer wreaked havoc in India’s lower order as the tourists lost their last five wickets for 45 runs after the second break.

Jamieson, enjoying some of the luck that had evaded him earlier in the day, claimed four of those wickets after starting with Cheteshwar Pujara, who had threatened to guide the tourists to a more than competitive total.

Pujara, picking his shots with the care of a player who knew how important his innings would be, ground out a 25th test half century and enjoyed a partnership of 81 with Hanuma Vihari that had India looking comfortable at 194-4 just before tea.

Vihari gloved behind for 55 to bring up the break, however, and Pujara was gone for 54 two overs after the resumption when he abandoned his circumspection and skied an attempted hook that wicketkeeper BJ Watling took with ease.

“It was a wrong time to get out obviously, just before tea,” Vihari told reporters. “I was batting positively, I thought I played one shot too many.

“But that’s the name of the game, sometimes it goes your way and sometimes it doesn’t.”

Jamieson then removed Rishabh Pant, Umesh Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja in short order and left Trent Boult to mop up the final wicket by bowling Mohammed Shami for 12.

“It’s a pretty special feeling,” Jamieson said after carrying the ball off the field.

“I think as a bowling unit we did so well and I was lucky to grab a few. At one stage I thought they were probably going to get a few more, (the wicket) wasn’t doing quite as much as it did in Wellington, so to keep them to 240 is pretty good.”

The day started poorly for the tourists when New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and sent his five-pronged seam attack out to bowl on a green track.

Opener Prithvi Shaw provided the first bright moments of the day for the Indian supporters with a quickfire half century in the rain-delayed first session that presented a stark contrast to what was to come from Pujara.

Jamieson dismissed the 20-year-old caught behind for 54, though, and his opening partner Mayank Agarwal (7) was also sent back before the first break.

Skipper Virat Kohli’s batting woes continued as he was trapped plumb in front by Tim Southee for three from the first ball he faced after lunch to take his tally to a paltry 24 from his three innings in the series.

New Zealand openers Tom Latham, who was unbeaten on 27, and Tom Blundell (29 not out) successfully negotiated 23 overs until stumps and will resume on Sunday looking to cut deep into India’s 179-run lead.

Paarl: Heinrich Klaasen's first one-day international century successfully set up South Africa for a 74-run win as Australia were bowled out for 217 while chasing 292 in the series-opener on Saturday.

South Africa's Heinrich Klaasen plays a shot during first ODI match against Australia. AP

Klaasen, often on the fringes of South Africa's limited-overs teams, made 123 not out from 114 balls as the home team posted 291-7 in Paarl. Klaasen had only one previous half century in ODI cricket and was playing his first one-dayer in more than a year.

South Africa were 48-3 in the 10th over, having lost Janneman Malan first ball of the game on his debut, lbw to Mitchell Starc.

Klaasen set about rescuing the innings with his seven fours and three sixes. David Miller supported with a 70-ball 64. Kyle Verreynne also helped with 48 on his ODI debut.

Australia threatened with an 84-run stand for the third wicket between Steve Smith (76) and Marnus Labuschagne, who made 41 against his country of birth. Labuschagne's first game against South Africa, the country he left at the age of 10 when his family emigrated to Australia, ended when he was caught trying to hit spinner Keshav Maharaj down the ground.

The turning point came when Smith was out lbw to fast bowler Anrich Nortje to leave Australia 174-5. It started a collapse, where the Australians lost their last six wickets for 43 runs to be bowled out in 45.1 overs.

Lungi Ngidi took 3-30 for South Africa and Nortje 2-39. Nortje ended it by knocking back Josh Hazlewood's off stump to put the Proteas ahead in the three-match series.

Melbourne: Spinner Radha Yadav on Saturday hailed the impact of bowling coach Narendra Hirwani after claiming a career-best 4/23 in India's seven-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the Women's T20 World Cup.

India's spinners have been the talk of the tournament so far in Australia and Yadav was the latest to shine, laying the foundation for their win with a four-wicket haul to restrict Sri Lanka to 113 for nine.

But the left-arm spinner, who was not in the starting XI when Poonam Yadav spun a web around Australia in their opener, was reluctant to take the credit herself and heaped praise on former India spinner Hirwari for getting her back to her best.

"Narendra has been with us since the West Indies tour last year in November. He has definitely worked a lot on my bowling. My mindset often gets jumbled and I start overthinking about a lot of things, especially my action and my deliveries in general, but he has supported me a lot by freeing my mind up and clearing the clutter," Yadav said.

India head into the semi-final of the tournament with a 100 percent win record and Yadav is hoping for a better show in the coming days.

"We were working hard for this, so I'm really happy that we have won four consecutive matches. I'm feeling good in general now and I want to do even better in the semi-finals."

After Yadav flummoxed the Sri Lankan batters with her match-winning bowling performance, Shafali Verma showed her class again by hitting a 34-ball 47.

Sri Lanka were left to rue their dropped catches — two off Shafali's blade. Kavisha Dilhari spilled one at extra cover before Sathya Sandeepani also failed to hold on to an offering from Shafali.

Captain Chamari Athapaththu, who scored 33, knows dropped catches against match-winners have cost her side but also recognised the need for others to step up alongside her in the middle.

"We dropped Sophie Devine twice, then we dropped Rachael Haynes twice and now Shafali Verma. Catches win matches, and we have to be taking them when aggressive batters give them, otherwise we can't stop them," she said.

"India are a great team and I hope to see them play in the final," she added.

"This edition will see a fourth team added to the tournament," he added.

The 2020 season will have a total of seven matches which will be played during the IPL Playoff week at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

The inaugural edition of the tournament in 2018 comprised an exhibition match played between the Trailblazers and the Supernovas at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai before the first men's qualifier.

Last year, the tournament expanded into a three-team event with the edition of Velocity, who lost to the Supernovas by four wickets in the final.

Harmanpreet Kaur, Mithali Raj and Smriti Mandhana led the three sides in 2019.

The 13th edition of the IPL starts from 29 March with defending champions Mumbai Indians taking on Chennai Super Kings in Mumbai.

Christchurch: Hanuma Vihari on Saturday said poor shot selection led to India getting bowled out for a below-par 242 against New Zealand on a "fair pitch", dealing a blow to their hopes of a comeback in the two-Test series.

Hanuma Vihari said poor shot selection led to India getting bowled out for a below-par 242. AP

New Zealand were 63 for no loss at stumps on the opening day of the second and final Test.

Vihari, who was very impressive in his 55 off 70 balls, said that he wanted to attack so that Cheteshwar Pujara can play his natural game of grinding the bowling.

"Yes, obviously as the pitch didn't do as much as we expected," Vihari was honest in his assessment of the green top.

"They bowled in good areas and knew what to expect from this track. Prithvi set the tone, Pujara spent time. All dismissals happened at wrong time. None of the dismissals were because of the pitch. Mostly it was because of batsmen's error. Pitch was fair," the dependable middle-order batsman said.

On this track, a total in excess of 300 would have been an ideal first-innings score.

Vihari looked in command while playing the short ball and he said leaving them would have also hampered Pujara's natural game.

Both of them playing a defensive game in the first Test in Wellington cost India dearly.

"As Pujara was playing at one end and I wanted to take that lead and play positively because he is a player who will play for a lot of time. We know that.

"So I didn't also want to take time and put pressure on Pujara or on our innings because if you don't keep scoreboard moving you will get stuck like in the last game. That's why I decided to play positively and take them on," Vihari explained his game plan.

He regretted getting out at the wrong time as his dismissal at the stroke of tea triggered a collapse in the final session.

"It was a wrong time to get out obviously just before tea as we had a good session. We scored 110 runs and lost only one wicket prior to that. I was batting positively but I played one shot too many."

For Vihari, going after the short ball was his decision.

"It was a personal decision. As a team we wanted to show more intent. Wicket was much better here and it was a personal decision to put the short ball away and put pressure on them.

"It didn't go our way on a couple of occasions. I am sure when we get opportunity again we can do it."

Vihari had played an A game at the Hagley Oval and his assessment is that the pitch would flatten out eventually.

"I played an India A game here and that's what I was communicating to my teammates that it doesn't do much after the first session and it really flattens out after that.

"It will slow down on day three and four. It played according to our imagination. It's a fair wicket," he assessed.

He said Kyle Jamieson's five-wicket haul was well deserved.

"He will get much more bounce than other bowlers and that extra bounce is a factor on these kind of pitches where it is bouncy and much more spongy than Indian tracks.

"To play him on frontfoot balls are more dangerous than back of length or short balls. Jamieson deservingly got five wickets."

Christchurch: After taking five-wickets on day one of the second Test against India, New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson on Saturday said that the Indian batsmen looked a bit indecisive against the short ball.

On the first day of the second Test, Cheteshwar Pujara and Hanuma Vihari were going great guns for the Indian side as they formed a 82-run stand. Vihari in particular was looking in attacking mindset against the short ball.

Playing on his second Test, Kyle Jamieson registered his first five-wicket haul. AP

But once Vihari was out, the floodgates opened, and India was bundled out for 242 runs in the first innings.

"The wicket does not do as much as it does in Wellington. We had to stick there for long periods of time. The ball was still moving a little bit. They played a few more shots than they did in Wellington. The pitch probably allowed them to, but I guess their guys looked a bit indecisive against the short ball," Jamieson told reporters after the close of play on day one of the second Test.

"Probably the high point for me was to see how good we were as a team, to take 10 wickets and restrict the Indians was pretty special. To be no wickets down at stumps marks a pretty good day of Test cricket for us," he added.

Jamieson dismissed Prithvi Shaw, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rishabh Pant, Umesh Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja.

New Zealand ended the day one at 63/0 with Tom Blundell and Tom Latham looking firm at the crease.

In the match, the hosts had opted to bowl first after winning the toss.

"When you win the toss and bowl first, bundling the opposition out is a pretty good way to go. As a bowling unit, we were good in the first Test and we were good here. We were clear in our plans and we bowled in partnerships," Jamieson said.

India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur on Saturday said the team management has given Shafali Verma the freedom to play her natural game, which has set the Women's T20 World Cup ablaze.

The 16-year-old announced her emergence on the global stage by becoming the second highest run-getter in the ongoing tournament. She has so far scored 161 runs, hitting 18 fours and nine sixes in four matches at an astounding strike rate of 161.

Shafali Verma has been the breakout star of the ongoing Women's T20 World Cup. Image courtesy: Twitter @T20WorldCup

On Saturday, Shafali hit a 34-ball 47 to steer India to a seven-wicket victory over Sri Lanka after spinner Radha Yadav produced a career-best 4/23.

"Shafali is someone who loves to play big shots, and we don't want to stop her. She should continue doing the same and she should continue enjoying her game," Harmanpreet said after the match.

India entered the semifinals with an all-win record as they led Group A with eight points from four games and the captain insisted it is important to continue the winning momentum.

"It's really important to keep the momentum when you are winning games. You really work hard, so you can't afford to lose that momentum. You can't bowl same pace and lengths on these wickets, so you need to keep rotating the bowlers."

The skipper, herself known to be a power hitter, has endured a poor start to the tournament by failing to reach double digit scores. However, against Sri Lanka, she hit two boundaries and a maximum.

"Today I tried to be positive and got a few boundaries. In the upcoming games I'll try to give my best," Harmanpreet said.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka skipper Chamari Atapattu rued the reprieves given by her side to Shafali in the form of two dropped catches.

"I think that score was not enough, we lost couple of chances, specially Shafali, it was hard to stop her," she said.

"Yeah, I got a good start but unfortunately got out in the 10th, would have wanted to stay in there till the 16th or the 17th over. I hope we can beat Bangladesh in our last game," she added.

Christchurch: Indian batsmen showed intent but their reckless shot selection took them only as far as 242 on an eventful opening day of the second Test against New Zealand on Saturday.

Prithvi Shaw (54) and Cheteshwar Pujara (54) hit contrasting half-centuries to take the fight to New Zealand on Day 1 of the second Test. AP

Prithvi Shaw (54) and Cheteshwar Pujara (54) hit contrasting half-centuries to take the fight to the rival camp. However, Hanuma Vihari's (55 off 70 balls) dismissal at the stroke of tea tilted the scale in New Zealand's favour as they gained a clear upper-hand by stumps.

Kyle Jamieson (5/45) in an inspired post-tea spell blew away the middle and lower-order to finish with his maiden five-wicket haul in only his second Test.

The hosts ended the day at 63 for no loss with both the Tom Latham (27 batting) and Blundell (29 batting) hardly troubled by Indian pacers.

The pitch will be best for batting on days two and three which means that for Virat Kohli and his men, the catch-up game starts from the second day itself as the ignominy of a 0-2 series loss looms large.

On a green-top, three Indian batsmen showed that scoring runs wasn't difficult.

Shah's lunging drive after his second half-century in Tests and Vihari and Pujara's ill-timed pull shots were a testimony that their dismissals were more about profligacy than New Zealand's bowling.

Rishabh Pant, who has been preferred over a much-accomplished Wriddhiman Saha, purely on batting skills, played a lazy shot to find his stumps rattled.

From 194 for four with a standard first innings total of 350 looking imminent, India lost five wickets for 22 runs in a period of six overs and it could well have a decisive impact in the final outcome of the contest.

Jamieson, in his post-tea spell, got rid of Pujara, Pant and Umesh Yadav in quick succession as India lost a golden opportunity to press home the advantage.

The 32 boundaries and three sixes with a run-rate of 3.84 in 63 overs will not able to tell the story of how Indians fluffed their lines during the day.

The immensely talented Shaw displayed improved footwork that saw him drive elegantly as the likes of Trent Boult (2/89) and Colin de Grandhomme (0/31) were guilty of over-pitching in trying to get some swing.

There were square drives and a few on-drives while he also played and missed a few. He did live dangerously but more importantly, had the scoreboard ticking even when Pujara was stuck at the other end.

Neil Wagner bowled a bouncer and Shaw hooked him for maximum to reach his half-century. Having added 50 runs with Pujara, the senior partner should have ideally calmed the inexperienced one, who instead of playing for lunch, lunged at a fuller delivery from Jamieson to be brilliantly caught by Latham.

Kohli's poor tour just got worse when Tim Southee (2/38) got one to shape in slightly finding him plumb in-front. Ajinkya Rahane jabbed with limited footwork as Pujara looked more assured about his off-stump even as he hit occasional drives but mostly holding one end up.

It was young Vihari, who changed the course by counter-attacking the trio of Boult, Southee and Wagner in quick time.

Interestingly, when Pujara was on 49, Vihari was on 13 and by the time he got out for 55, having hit 10 boundaries, India's number three was on 53.

Vihari looked comfortably against Wagner as he played a slash over point to complete his fifty and then another pull-shot off the very next delivery. But Vihari played one shot too many as Wagner bowled a slow bouncer to take him out of the equation.

Once India came out to bat after tea, Jamieson changed the tactic from bowling fuller to his usual back of a length line that could create disconcerting bounce for the batsmen.

Pujara got a good bouncer and there was no balance while going for the pull-shot. Indian innings was in total disarray by then and result was another day where stars promised a lot and delivered too little.

Melbourne: Spinner Radha Yadav flummoxed the rival batting line-up with a career-best 4/23 before Shafali Verma's blistering 34-ball 47 powered India to a seven-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup on Saturday.

Opting to bat, Sri Lanka were restricted to a modest 113 for nine in their final Group A match with left-arm spinner Radha (4/23) running through the rivals' batting line-up, including claiming the prized scalp of skipper Chamari Atapattu.

Shafali, then, top-scored as India chased down the target in just 14.4 overs.

The win meant India entered the semifinals with an all-win record. This was India's fourth successive victory in the tournament as the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side consolidated their position on top of the group with eight points.

The 16-year-old Shafali, who was dropped twice in the second and fourth over, hit seven fours and a six in her knock but was unable to reach her maiden fifty for the second time in the tournament, getting run-out in the 11th over.

She had scored 46 against New Zealand in her previous outing.

Kaur and opener Smriti Mandhana again squandered their good starts, departing for 15 and 17, respectively.

Mandhana mistimed the ball to Kavisha Dilhari in the fifth over while the skipper departed while trying to clear the long-on fielder in the 10th over.

For Sri Lanka, Udeshika Prabodhani (1/13) and Shashikala Siriwardene (1/42)picked up a wicket each, before the duo of Jemimah Rodrigues (15) and Deepti Sharma (15) sealed the victory.

Earlier, Sri Lanka were dealt a blow when opener Umesha Thimashini (2) tried to go for a big shot off a Deepti Sharma delivery, only to be caught by Rajeshwari Gayakwad in the third over.

In-from skipper Atapattu (33) continued to attack, hitting five fours and a six and stitched a 30-run partnership with Harshitha Madavi (12).

However, left-arm spinner Gayakwad tightened the screws in the eighth over, bowling a wicket maiden while dismissing Madavi.

The introduction of Radha in the ninth over worked as immediately after hitting a six over deep wicket, the Sri Lankan captain was caught at square leg.

Sri Lanka then suffered a batting collapse as Radha accounted for Hansima Karunaratne (7) and Hasini Perera (7) in her next over. She also dismissed wicket-keeper Anushka Sanjeewani (1).

The Indian spinners dominated the proceedings as, besides Radha, Gayakwad (2/18) picked up two wickets, while Deepti (1/16), Shikha Pandey (1/35), and Poonam Yadav (1/20) took one apiece.

12:31 (IST)

It was a long day of Test cricket with match starting 45 minutes late due to wet conditions but we still managed to see 86 overs bowled today. Kiwis go back as the happier side. India on back foot again. And they have a lot to answer tomorrow. There will be many discussions in the Indian dressing room. Visitors will have to do something extraordinary to pull things back in their favour tomorrow.

For now, we will take your leave. Come back again, for Day 2 coverage, at sharp 4 am (IST).

12:31 (IST)

And the day belongs to New Zealand. First they bowled India out for a modest score and then the openers have played out the new ball without any damage. India's lead is less than 200 and if their bowlers do not strike early in the morning tomorrow, their chances in this Test will be all but gone.

12:21 (IST)

After 23 overs,New Zealand 63/0 ( Tom Latham 27 , Tom Blundell 29)

That's stumps on Day 1. And all the three sessions today belonged to the hosts. They bundled out visitors for 242 and then Latham and Blundell made sure Kiwis did not lose any wicket till the close of play. India would be very disappointed. Nothing went there way today starting from toss. Kiwis 63/0 in 23 overs in first innngs so far, trail by 179 runs.

12:15 (IST)

After 22 overs,New Zealand 59/0 ( Tom Latham 26 , Tom Blundell 26)

Bumrah returns to the attack and almost got Latham on two occasions as ball missed his edge once and then the top of off stump. Latham manages to evade the threat in this over. We have one more over left today.

12:10 (IST)

After 21 overs,New Zealand 57/0 ( Tom Latham 25 , Tom Blundell 25)

Ravindra Jadeja, Left arm orthodox, brought into the attack as close of day's play nears. Blundell defends first three balls very well and then Kohli places a silly point but no damage done. Jadeja starts off with a maiden. The next over should be the last of the day.

12:06 (IST)

After 20 overs,New Zealand 57/0 ( Tom Latham 25 , Tom Blundell 25)

Two beautiful looking boundaries by Latham in this over. Shami is going too fuller in length now. Latham is not leaving any opportunity to score the boundaries. NZ have now surpassed the fifty-run mark as well.

12:05 (IST)

FOUR! Not the ideal delivery to Latham by Shami, fullish and Latham stood and presented the full face of the bat to fetch four runs with a beautiful looking off drive.

12:03 (IST)

FOUR! That is pushed through the covers for four. Timed beautifully from Latham. That boundary helps New Zealand surpass fifty-run mark.

12:02 (IST)

After 19 overs,New Zealand 49/0 ( Tom Latham 17 , Tom Blundell 25)

Umesh smashed for a boundary off the first ball by Blundell. New Zealand have brought the deficit below 200 runs now with 10 wickets still intact. Kohli has stuck to pace in these 19 overs. Still no sign of spin from the captain.

11:58 (IST)

FOUR! Short ball from Umesh and Blundell was waiting for that, he shifts weight on back foot and smashes him for four runs to deep mid-wicket.

11:58 (IST)

After 18 overs,New Zealand 43/0 ( Tom Latham 16 , Tom Blundell 20)

Shami continues. Kiwi openers have gone slow in this innings and that approach has paid off. 43 runs after the end of 18th over. The empty wicket column will put India on the back foot at the end of the day. Should Kohli try out a part-timer here to break attention of the batters or maybe try Jadeja in the last few overs?

11:53 (IST)

After 17 overs,New Zealand 42/0 ( Tom Latham 16 , Tom Blundell 19)

Umesh continues. Bowled five dots, did not let Latham go off the hook before straying down the leg stump line and getting hit for a boundary, which has come after a long time.

11:52 (IST)

FOUR! Latham gets the room outside the off stump and he cuts it away for four runs to backward point.

11:49 (IST)

After 16 overs,New Zealand 38/0 ( Tom Latham 12 , Tom Blundell 19)

This is the best over Shami has bowled as the ball went past the outside edge of Blundell's bat on numerous occasions. He and Umesh have been bowling good lines and with extra pace as well. But the wickets are hard to come by.

11:45 (IST)

After 15 overs,New Zealand 38/0 ( Tom Latham 12 , Tom Blundell 19)

Umesh continues and third ball of the over skids to Blundell, almost hit the bottom of his pads. Kiwis are off to a decent start here and more pressure on India as they still look for the first wicket.

11:41 (IST)

After 14 overs,New Zealand 37/0 ( Tom Latham 12 , Tom Blundell 18)

Shami completes his third over. Latham has scored most his runs behind square of the wicket on both sides, which tells you that Indian bowlers have not lured him to play lurch ahead. Latham too has been very careful in this approach. Just 1 off the over.

11:36 (IST)

After 13 overs,New Zealand 36/0 ( Tom Latham 12 , Tom Blundell 17)

Change in bowling. Umesh Yadav replaces Bumrah. Starts off with a widish delivery outside the off stump. Umesh brings the ball in to Blundell after bowling two away swingers and it almost hit the top of off as the batsman left. Top over from Umesh, who is trying many things and executing them perfectly as well.

11:33 (IST)

Attack should be the operative word for India

11:29 (IST)

After 12 overs,New Zealand 35/0 ( Tom Latham 12 , Tom Blundell 16)

Shami continues. He is steaming in and attacking the stumps. Indians have bowled well but Kiwis have been equally good to evade the threat of new ball. Some edges have fallen short but the openers have been very cautious in their stroke making.

11:25 (IST)

After 11 overs,New Zealand 33/0 ( Tom Latham 11 , Tom Blundell 15)

Bumrah continues. Blundell is right behind the ball as he defends it. Bumrah is attacking  his stumps from over the wicket. This was the first maiden over from Bumrah as he kept Blundell on back foot.

11:23 (IST)

Much like their counterparts, nothing much is happening for the Indians pacers with the new ball. The grass on this surface is deceptive and it doesn't actually help the fast bowlers to extract some swing off the pitch. With just 242 on the board, this is not an encouraging sign for Virat Kohli and his bowling unit.

11:21 (IST)

After 10 overs,New Zealand 33/0 ( Tom Latham 11 , Tom Blundell 15)

Mohammed Shami, right-arm fast medium, brought into the attack, replaces Umesh Yadav and he straightaway gets movement off the pitch. Blundell was very watchful against Shami in this over. Just 1 off it.

11:17 (IST)

After 9 overs,New Zealand 32/0 ( Tom Latham 11 , Tom Blundell 14)

Bumrah continues and movement on the ball can still be seen. He produces an edge but it runs away for four runs. Bumrah has bowled well and needs to continue hitting the right length. But would Kohli continue with him for a longer spell or bring Shami sooner?

11:15 (IST)

FOUR! Outside edge off Latham's bat and it runs down to third man boundary for four runs.

11:13 (IST)

After 8 overs,New Zealand 28/0 ( Tom Latham 7 , Tom Blundell 14)

Umesh Yadav manages to produce an edge off Latham but it does not carry to Kohli at second slip. Blundell is not missing out on scoring runs off the weak balls. India still in search of wickets. Kiwiws off to solid start. Five runs off this over.

11:12 (IST)

FOUR! Blundell gets one fuller length delivery and he drives it for four runs again.

11:09 (IST)

After 7 overs,New Zealand 23/0 ( Tom Latham 6 , Tom Blundell 10)

Bumrah starts off the new over with good length and then bangs it short twice. But Blundell was cut to the task. Bumrah then bowls a fuller length delivery and gets hit for a boundary to the covers.

11:08 (IST)

FOUR! This is a nice shot, fullish in length, Blundell got came close to the pitch of the ball and drive it through covers for four runs.

11:05 (IST)

After 6 overs,New Zealand 18/0 ( Tom Latham 5 , Tom Blundell 6)

Blundell is losing his balance while clipping the ball to square leg fielder. Maybe Kohli needs to place more attacking field for him to put him under pressure. Just 2 off the over.

11:01 (IST)

After 5 overs,New Zealand 16/0 ( Tom Latham 5 , Tom Blundell 4)

Bumrah continues and he is consistently hitting the off stump area. Latham respects the discipline bowling. Just two off the over. Kiwis not looking to be aggressive.

10:57 (IST)

Umesh Yadav’s bowling average and SR in Tests:

Home : 24.54 | 45.7
Away : 42.19 | 61.0

10:57 (IST)

After 4 overs,New Zealand 14/0 ( Tom Latham 3 , Tom Blundell 4)

Umesh continues and he is bowling theright line to Blundell. Keeps him guessing with his length throughout the over while attacking his stumps. Just 1 off the over.

10:53 (IST)

After 3 overs,New Zealand 13/0 ( Tom Latham 2 , Tom Blundell 4)

Bumrah continues and he is bowling good lines. There is swing on offer and Bumrah is looking good here, getting good shape on the ball. Blundell was lucky that the inside edge did not hit the stumps and he got a boundary to open his account. Four off the over.

10:52 (IST)

FOUR! Blundell gets off the mark but in a very nervous manner. The inswinger rom Bumrah, kissed the inside edge and ran away for four runs to fine leg.

10:49 (IST)

After 2 overs,New Zealand 9/0 ( Tom Latham 2 , Tom Blundell 0)

Umesh Yadav, right-arm fast, to share the new ball with Bumrah. He starts off with away swingers to Blundell. To Latham, he tries to bowls a bouncer first up but fails to control the line of the ball. Five runs off the over.

10:47 (IST)

Poor application from the visiting batsmen today

10:44 (IST)

After 1 over, New Zealand 4/0 ( Tom Latham 2 , Tom Blundell 0)

Bumrah bowls the first over for India and he starts off from round the wicket, aiming at the stumps of Latham. The penultimate ball of the over was a beauty, pitched at off stump and swung a tad away. Four from the over.

10:42 (IST)

A complete harakiri from the Indians as they lost 6 for 48 after Tea. All the hard work of the previous sessions have now been undone. No demons in the pitch, it was just poor application and pathetic shot selections. Think India are at least 100-120 runs short of what would have been an ideal first-innings score on this pitch.

10:41 (IST)

Indian team is in the huddle, getting a pep talk before entering the field of play. Inda have folded out for 242 and at one stage, they were 194/4. Bowlers need to raise their game after disappointing to show by Indian batting.

Jasprit Bumrah, right arm fast, will open the bowling. The two Toms - Latham and Blundell to open innings for Black Caps.

10:36 (IST)

"It's a pretty special feeling. As a bowling unit, we did so well. Certainly very comfortable coming back out here. It's been the best part about my career, playing here in my early days. Wasn't quite doing as much as it did in Wellington. Getting them at 240, it's pretty good," says Kyle Jamieson, the pick of the New Zealand bowlers (5/45) at the end of the Indian innings.

10:30 (IST)

After 63 overs,India 242/10 ( Jasprit Bumrah 10 , )

Boult cleans up Shami on the last ball of the over but not before been taken to the cleaners by the Indian fast bowler. Back to back sixes in the last over from Shami's bat. On the penultimate ball of the over, he gets hit on the helmet, Boult runs in to bowled him on the last ball. India manage only 242 in their first innings. We will be back with Kiwis first innings in quick time.

10:27 (IST)

SIX! That's one more, Shami makes room, clears his leg and swings again, this time connects better than earlier occasion, hits it over long on for a maximum.

10:26 (IST)

SIX! Shami swings blindly and connects it, the ball sails over deep backward square leg for a maximum.

10:23 (IST)

After 62 overs,India 229/9 ( Mohammed Shami 4 , Jasprit Bumrah 9)

Some frustrating batting for Kiwis by Bumrah, as he collects a boundary and then a double in the same region. He is swinging his bat blindly and connecting too. He collets three off the last ball to add to that frustration. Nine runs off the Jamieson over.

10:21 (IST)

Maybe the neighbours aren't so different after all

10:20 (IST)

FOUR! Bumrah plays a blind shot, a heave, and that runs away for four runs to deep mid-wicket where there was no protection.

10:19 (IST)

After 61 overs,India 220/9 ( Mohammed Shami 4 , Jasprit Bumrah 0)

Boult continues. Shami not only survives the over but gets a boundary to his name as well. Every run here is like gold dust. Just four runs from the over.

10:17 (IST)

FOUR! Inside edge off Shami's bat and it runs down for four runs to fine leg boundary.

10:15 (IST)

After 60 overs,India 216/9 ( Mohammed Shami 0 , Jasprit Bumrah 0)

Jamieson picks up his first five-for, in only his second Test. He gets to the milestone by removing Jadeja. Jasprit Bumrah has joined Shami in the middle. How much can they add for the last wicket?

OUT! Jadeja is also gone. Jamieson picks up a five-wicket haul. Yet again, he bangs it short and asks Jadeja to pull him, he accepts the challenge and ends up getting holed out at deep fine leg where Boult takes a good catch. Jadeja c Boult b Jamieson 9(10)

Latest Updates, 2nd Test, Day 1 India vs New Zealand: That's stumps on Day 1.

Preview: India will look to bounce back hard when they take on New Zealand in the 2nd Test at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch. New Zealand's meticulous planning systematically dismantled India in the first Test in Basin Reserve and it also meant that Black Caps would go unbeaten in six consecutive series at home.

The sour taste of a 10-wicket loss to New Zealand in the first Test had been a good lesson for India’s cricketers and there was no doubt they would be far more competitive in the second in Christchurch, coach Ravi Shastri said.

The visitors had won their previous seven International Cricket Council World Test Championship matches to lead the standings on 360 points before they were hammered at the Basin Reserve.

Shastri, however, said his side had learned a lot about how New Zealand would bowl to them at Hagley Oval when the game starts on Saturday and the sting of defeat was on their minds as they look to level the two-match series.

“We were outplayed in the first Test but I always believe that a shake-up like that is good. It opens your mindset,” Shastri told reporters in Christchurch on Friday.

“If you have not tasted defeat you can have a closed or fixed mindset. Here, when you see what has happened, it is good, it gives you opportunities to learn.

“You know what New Zealand are doing and what to expect. It’s a good lesson and the boys are up for the challenge.”

Shastri did not confirm the playing XI on Friday but hinted there was some debate over whether Ravindra Jadeja or Ravichandran Ashwin would occupy the spinning all-rounder spot in the side.

A final decision would be made just before the toss on Saturday, although Shastri said that Ashwin’s batting had slipped.

The off-spinner, who has four Test centuries along with his 365 wickets, has not passed 50 since Aug. 2017 and has scored a total of 126 runs in his last 10 matches.

“He is a world-class bowler,” Shastri said. “There is absolutely no doubt about it. But ... he will be disappointed in the way he has batted and he will need to improve that.”

New Zealand pace bowler Trent Boult, who was eyeing a green Hagley Oval wicket on Friday, said the Indians would definitely have learned and adapted after the hosts bogged them down in Wellington.

Boult and his new-ball partner Tim Southee took 14 of the 20 wickets to fall in Wellington and will welcome back Neil Wagner after he missed the first game to attend the birth of his first child.

“We’re definitely expecting them to adapt pretty quickly and be positive coming into this Test match. Their records speak for themselves,” Boult said.

“They’re number one in the world for a reason and that’s solely because they can adapt to any conditions.”

New Delhi: England all-rounder Tom Curran says he will not be showing all his tricks during the upcoming IPL keeping in mind the T20 World Cup that begins in Australia in October.

"If I'm bowling in the nets to some of the Indian guys, I'm not going to be showing them all the tricks," Curran, who was bought by Rajasthan Royals for his base price of Rs 1 crore, was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

"But that's a huge benefit of having Jos, Stokesy and these guys. I think you actually learn a lot too. Speaking to Jos I'll learn about batting. You just need to have some of the players on the international stage to talk to, and try things with."

The 24-year-old said during the IPL, the focus will be on self-improvement.

"I don't think you chat weaknesses with loads of people anyway. There are a few people who you might trust, and you might ask, 'what does Steve Smith do in this situation?' but it's more about developing and getting better, which we players focus more on," he said.

Australian Andrew McDonald will be at the helm at Rajasthan Royals and Curran said though he is looking forward to working with him, sometimes he might need to filter information.

"I don't think it will make too much of a difference. It will be great to work with him (McDonald) there and he'll be fully involved once he gets to India," he said.

"I haven't worked with him full-time but I have bumped into him. Nowadays you tend to bump into people and have conversations, so it will be a really good experience."

"You're always going to have coaches, but it's about filtering information. There are things that people say some people you're going to listen to, and you almost build up that relationship over time from working with someone."

Rajasthan will also have two top England cricketers in Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes and Curran said it helps to have familiar faces around in a hectic tournament like the IPL.

"I'm really looking forward to it. I've already played a lot of cricket now with the guys there, so it makes it that much easier. Especially being somewhere like India, where it's a busy hectic schedule, to have those familiar faces there will be nice."

Johannesburg: South Africa's premier pacer Kagiso Rabada has been ruled out of the three-match ODI series against India after sustaining a groin strain which has abruptly ended his ongoing series against Australia.

Kagiso Rabada said playing against Virat Kohli will be an opportunity for him to test himself. Reuters

The 24-year-old will be out of action for four weeks after suffering the injury during the final T20I against Australia on Wednesday.

South Africa after losing the T20 series 1-2, are now locked in a three-match ODI series with Australia.

"Kagiso sustained a groin muscle strain in the T20 series against Australia, he was assessed by the medical staff, assisted by an MRI scan," Cricket South Africa (CSA), Chief Medical Officer, Shuaib Manjra said in a media statement.

India captain Virat Kohli's strenuous workload will certainly be factored in when BCCI decides its list of players to feature in the Asia XI team for the two-match T20I series against World XI in Dhaka on 21 and 22 March.

While the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has recently stated that Kohli is expected to play at least one match, PTI can confirm after talking to top BCCI sources that the India captain has not yet given his consent.

The Indian team will return from a gruelling six-week tour of New Zealand on 6 March and are set to assemble in Dharamsala on 10 March for the first ODI against South Africa on 12 March. The second ODI is in Lucknow on 15 March and last game of the series is scheduled to be held in Kolkata on 18 March.

Before the first ODI, a day is earmarked when all the contracted cricketers will undergo mandatory medical tests, including workload monitoring assessment ahead of the IPL starting 29 March.

"The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has sent a wish list of 10 names and we are supposed to send five players. As of now, we have not confirmed any names. All the players including the skipper will undergo tests to check their level of workload. Only then we will give the names," a senior BCCI source told PTI.

The matches are being planned by the BCB to celebrate the birth centenary of the country's founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Kohli recently spoke about the burnout issues and how matches along with practice and travel schedule take a toll on international players.

When India head coach Ravi Shastri was asked the question about the possible effect on Kohli's workload if he has to travel to Dhaka for a T20 game after playing three ODIs in six days, he said it's an individual call.

"I think that's up to the individual. If he is feeling the strain, he will let the authorities know," Shastri said.

The BCCI has always maintained that if any top player who is regularly playing wants a break, he will certainly be given time to physically recuperate.

"It will now depend whether Kohli gives his consent or not. Don't forget that the IPL will involve extensive travelling and once it's over, there are a number of overseas T20 series lined up," another senior official privy to the development said.

Melbourne: After securing the semi-final berth, the unbeaten Indian team would look to address some of its batting issues in the final Group A match against a deflated Sri Lanka in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup on Saturday.

The Indians are on a roll, having easily sealed their semi-final berth with wins over defending champions Australia, Bangladesh and New Zealand. The Lankans, on the other hand, are out of the semi-final race following two losses so far.

Harmanpreet Kaur-led India will look to maintain their 100 percent record in Women's T20 World Cup 2020. ICC media

While India beat hosts Australia by 17 runs in the tournament opener, they defeated Bangladesh by 18 runs before eking out a narrow four-run victory over the White Ferns on Thursday.

And come Saturday, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side would look to end its group engagements on a high when it takes on the islanders.

But the Indians definitely have a few things to worry about, especially their below-par show with the bat, going into the business end of the tournament.

In all the previous three outings, India failed to put on big scores on the board. They managed just 132 runs against Australia, 142 against Bangladesh and 133 vs New Zealand.

India's unpredictable middle-order has repeatedly squandered good starts to eventually settle for low scores.

In all the three matches, the bowling unit came to India's rescue and the bailed the side out.

Heavily reliant on the brilliance of a 16-year-old Shafali Verma, the Indian middle-order has cut a sorry figure so far and it's time senior pros like Harmanpreet and Veda Krishnamurthy step up and take the responsibility.

Opener Smriti Mandhana too has failed to join the party so far.

Verma has been impressive at the top registering scores of 29, 39 and 46 for a total of 114 from three games.

Skipper Harmanpreet has rued the inability of her batters to capitalise on good starts and cautioned them against making "silly mistakes" in the knock-out rounds.

"It's a great feeling when your team performs day in day out. Still we made the same mistakes after a good first 10 overs, we got a good start but couldn't carry the momentum," Kaur had said.

"We can't make silly mistakes with harder games coming up. Shafali (Verma) is giving us good starts, her initial runs are crucial for us," she added.

The Indian bowling, however, has been phenomenal in the tournament so far and played a vital role in their smooth entry into the last-four round.

Leg-spinner Poonam Yadav has been the star performer for India, picking up eight wickets so far, including match-winning effort of 4 for 19 against Australia.

She has been complimented well by the likes of Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Deepti Sharma and pacer Shikha Pandey.

Young Shafali was adjudged the player of the match for scoring a 34-ball 46 and the 16-year-old was elated with her performance.

"Feeling good, very happy with the performance, want to continue doing this. I waited for the loose balls and converted those," said Shafali.

Teams (from):

India: Harmanpreet Kaur (Captain), Taniya Bhatia, Harleen Deol, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Richa Ghosh, Veda Krishnamurthy, Smriti Mandhana, Shikha Pandey, Poonam Yadav, Arundhati Reddy, Jemimah Rodrigues, Shafali Verma, Deepti Sharma,Pooja Vastrakar, Radha Yadav.

Sri Lanka: Chamari Atapattu (Captain), Harshitha Madavi, Nilakshi de Silva, Kavisha Dilhari, Ama Kanchana, Hansima Karunaratne, Achini Kulasuriya, Sugandika Kumari, Hasini Perera, Udeshika Prabodhani, Sathya Sandeepani, Anushka Sanjeewani, Shashikala Siriwardene, Dilani Manodara, Umesha Thimashini.

Match starts at 09:30 AM IST.
