The West Bengal capital is home to the Kolkata Knight Riders, co-owned by Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan. The auctions have mostly been held in Bengaluru so far.

The trading window that is currently open will close on 14 November, and all the franchises were informed about it on Monday, according to a report in ESPNCricinfo.

While the franchises were allotted Rs 82 crore each for the IPL 2019, Rs 85 crore have been allocated for the 2020 season.

The franchises were originally allotted Rs 85 crore to build their teams for 2020. Every franchise will also have an additional purse of Rs 3 crore in addition to the balance in their kitties from the last auction.

Delhi Capitals have the biggest balance – Rs 8.2 crore, followed by Rajasthan Royals at Rs 7.15 crore and Kolkata Knight Riders at Rs 6.05 crore.

Last time when South Africa played a Test series in India, they suffered an embarrassing loss. They toured the country in 2015 to play four Tests and eventually lost three. That series loss, where Indian spinners wreaked havoc, might still be playing in heads of South African players and to make things more difficult, some of their Test stalwarts have retired.

File image of Aiden Markram. AFP

File image of Aiden Markram. AFP

Ahead of the first Test between India and South Africa at Visakhapatnam, opening batsman Aiden Markram spoke about losing big names like AB De Villiers, Dale Steyn and Hashim Amla but said other players have to step up and take the responsibility.

Speaking to the Hindustan Times in an interview, Markram said, "Losing Hashim, from the batting perspective, and Dale is massive. They are legends you would never be able to replace. It is a lot like when Jacques Kallis and AB (de Villiers) retired. Ideally, the other batters would like to share the load now and play with a bit more responsibility in getting the team over the line."

De Villiers, who played 114 Tests and scored at an average of 50, retired from international cricket in 2018, while Amla made his retirement call in August this year. Just like De Villiers, Amla has played over 100 Tests and scored 9,282 runs at an average of 46.

In the absence of the two key batsmen, the onus of scoring runs and making an impact in the three-Test series will be on likes of Markram, skipper Faf du Plessis, Quinton de Kock, and newcomer Zubayr Hamza. In the bowling department, Kagiso Rabada will spearhead the pacers while Keshav Maharaj and Dane Piedt will look to cause trouble on spin-friendly wickets.

The conditions will obviously be very tough for South Africa and pulling off a series victory will be a big ask for Proteas. However, Markram said his team have prepared well and are raring to have a go against the No 1 ranked side.

"Our preparations have gone well. We have been here for 3-4 weeks with the ‘A’ side and played two four-day games, which was nice to acclimatise to the conditions in India. The preparations have gone really well for us as a side. The guys seem in good spirits and full of energy, which is exciting," Markram said.

The first Test will begin on 2 October at the Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium followed by two more matches in Pune and Ranchi.

Friendlier foes have labelled them rank turners, clueless opponents have called them dust bowls, ragged rivals have described them as minefields, but for India, the hallowed 22-yard cricket pitch has served as the foundation of their fortress that has been breached only four times since 2010, and only once since December 2012.

Team India have recorded 32 wins of the 45 Tests (four losses and nine draws) in this decade so far, constituting an unrivalled 71.11 percent success rate. Australia, with 64.71 percent success rate in home Tests, are significantly behind at second spot. When it comes to a complete series, of the 17 hosted by India, including the one-off Test against Afghanistan, they have won a staggering 15, having lost one and drawn one, with the winning percentage for series rising to an astounding 88.

India

Including two standalone Tests against Bangladesh and Afghanistan, India have won 10 Test series in a row at home. Australia have had two such streaks. No Test side has gone on to register 11 straight series win. AFP

The last home season of the 10-year period begins with the Freedom Series against South Africa with Virat Kohli’s men looking to stretch their dominion as they target a historic 11th consecutive series win on home soil.

Despite the absence of strike bowler Jasprit Bumrah and with another new opening pair given a go, India begin the series as overwhelming favourites, with 'spin to win' likely to be their mantra. For the first 40 of the 120 World Test Championship points up for grabs, India start the three-match series at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam on 2 October.

Having travelled across the globe playing most of their red-ball cricket overseas in the last two years, the Indian side would be eager to revel in home comforts. In addition to their domination in India, Kohli’s men enjoy a psychological edge over South Africa from the 3-0 drubbing they dished out on their previous tour of 2015.

In complete contrast to India’s impregnable home record, the Proteas lost their latest Test series to Sri Lanka, who became the first Asian side to complete the feat in South Africa. After a 0-2 loss to Lanka, a dismal World Cup campaign followed, where Faf du Plessis’ side finished seventh in the 10-team competition. Throw in the AB de Villiers’ controversy, retirements of stalwarts Hashim Amla and Dale Steyn, and the rift between the players union and the administrators, a sterner – perhaps the sternest – test in the form of a tour to India, couldn’t have come at a more challenging time.

However, even with their backs against the wall, a little peek into South Africa's preparations will reveal that the visitors have gone the extra mile to usher in a new dawn.

An 'unofficial' five-match ODI series before the T20I series was arranged against India A. In addition to the limited-overs games, two first-class matches and one practice fixture against Board President's XI  were part of the tour. Several members of South Africa's  T20I and Test squads featured in those games. The CSA even organised a week-long spin camp comprising 15 members in Bengaluru in August.

Off-spinner Dane Piedt, who was part of the India tour back in 2015 and is likely to play a key role along with Keshav Maharaj, led the group of young bowlers like Bjorn Fortuin, Tsepo Ndwandwa and Senuran Muthusamy.

Along with Russell Domingo, the ‘A’ team coach, CSA also sent former left-arm wrist spinner, Paul Adams, as the spin bowling consultant while former batsman Ashwell Prince was named as the batting consultant for the camp.

“We have identified Aiden Markram, Zubayr Hamza and Temba Bavuma as key Proteas batsmen to benefit from this project and we have also included some of our potential stars of the future such as Janneman Malan and Sinethemba Qeshile, who have already both played for the Proteas, as well as Matthew Breetzke,” CSA Chief Executive Thabang Moroe had said in a media release.

Leaving no stone unturned, the tourists even roped in India’s domestic giant and former Mumbai captain Amol Muzumdar in their coaching setup for the series to guide the younger batsman against spin bowling.

Some of the results have already bore fruit. Fortuin had an impressive start to his international career in the T20I series. Bavuma, whose stay in India has already extended over a month now, made a couple of significant contributions in his debut T20I series before carrying his confidence to score an unbeaten 87 against the BPXI last week. Highly-promising talent, Aiden Markram, warmed-up with two centuries from three games on this tour.

South Africa spinners, Maharaj and Piedt, might not match India's Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja pound-for-pound, but Maharaj said that he aims to replicate the consistency of his more established contemporaries, Ashwin and Jadeja, reflects his desire to leave a mark in upcoming series.

With 94 wickets in 25 Tests at an average of 28.44, including a nine-wicket haul in an innings in Sri Lanka last year, Maharaj possesses a serious threat. While Piedt, too, has come into the side on the back of some excellent performances. The Cape Cobras captain with 54 wickets from 10 First-Class games was the leading wicket-taker in 4-day franchise series in South Africa. The right-arm off-spinner also took five wickets in the practice match in Mysore.

Despite South Africa’s best efforts, their slightly inexperienced batting might come short against the deadly spin combo of Ashwin and Jadeja and will be heavily relied on experienced players in Dean Elgar, Du Plessis and Quinton de Kock to do the bulk of the scoring. However, having done their homework right, South Africa can justifiably dream of toppling India off their perch.

India's Test squad: Virat Kohli (c), Mayank Agarwal, Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (vc), Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant (wk), Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Shubman Gill.

South Africa’s Test squad: Faf du Plessis (c), Temba Bavuma (vc), Theunis de Bruyn, Quinton de Kock (wk), Dean Elgar, Zubayr Hamza, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Senuran Muthusamy, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Vernon Philander, Dane Piedt, Kagiso Rabada, Heinrich Klassen.

Rohit Sharma is into the position before the bowler digs it short and then comes that 'Natraja' pull shot. With a very little swivel and a lot of elegance. No brute force, just touch, and placement. A sight to behold as if an artist just whisked his paint brush on the canvas. It's as if Rohit had an extra second to judge the length of the ball. Or he certainly reads the delivery from the hand of the bowler before other batsmen. That has been the secret of Rohit's unprecedented success in white-ball cricketer — extra time. But there's one area where he's running out of time, in saving his Test career.

At the age of 32, Rohit doesn't have much time time left to prove himself in Test cricket after repeated failures but he has another opportunity knocking on his door. And this time he will be donning the role of an opener. A role that has made him the 'Hitman'.

“Rohit Sharma has been selected in the side as an opener. He will open in the three matches," said selector MSK Prasad after Test team announcement for series against South Africa.

Rohit Sharma's last Test came in Australia in December last year. AFP

Rohit Sharma's last Test came in Australia in December last year. AFP

Gifted with strokeplay and timing, Rohit, for long, teased the fans with brilliance and dismay. But it all changed in 2013. Asked to open the innings in ODIs, the right-hander went from an inconsistent talent to unstoppable force. Three ODI triple tons, four T20I centuries, numerous match-winning innings, there's no end to his long list of accomplishments. And yet during all this time, he, for some reason, has failed to find his bearings in Test cricket.

It was also in 2013 that he made his Test debut. A 177 on debut, a 111* in next innings but then the scores started dwindling. Rohit kept reaching new heights in shorter formats and kept reaching new lows in Tests. He was rested, dropped, axed, everything. Eventually, after all these years, he only has 27 Tests to his name and 218 ODIs.

But the suffering of Indian openers have forced the selectors to now look back at Rohit as the top-order guy. In last two years, India have tried out seven openers — KL Rahul, Murali Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, Parthiv Patel, Prithvi Shaw, Mayank Agarwal, and Hanuma Vihari, but only one has stuck so far — Agarwal. While Shaw has great numbers to show, his injury and doping ban have kept him out for now.

Rahul's disastrous run of form tied the hands of selectors into trying Rohit as the opener — in a position that has brought him all the success in other formats. In Tests, it will be the first time he will be opening. A few times he has batted at No 3 and 4 but has largely been a 5 and 6 in his Test career. Those spots are not vacant anymore; Ajinkya Rahane and Hanuma Vihari have sealed it for themselves.

Why Rohit fails in Tests?

Test cricket is a different beast, and Rohit's certain technical limitations have made it tougher form him to tame the beast. Rohit never had a long stride like other successful batsmen. He has an instinctive forward press and plays a majority of his shots from the same position. He plays on front foot and back foot from the same position with just a subtle transfer of weight depending upon which feet he will be using. In shorter formats, tight lines make it easy for him to get behind the ball and play his shots. In Tests, there's more freedom to the bowlers and balls are outside the off-stump. Rohit is inevitably forced to play away from the body, hence the edges. If one moves back in, lbw or getting bowled is a sure shot opportunity. Exactly 55 percent of his dismissals in Test cricket has been either bowled, lbw or caught behind.

Rohit Sharma has never opened is Tests for India. PTI

Rohit Sharma has never opened is Tests for India. PTI

Can Rohit succeed as an opener and what would it mean for India?

Rohit's Test average is a shade over 39. His away average is 26.32, however, his home average is 85.44. Rohit loves scoring at home and there's a good chance he would do well, especially as an opener. He's familiar with the role, the pitches will be in its best shape at the start of innings. There's rarely steep bounce or swing in Indian conditions. It's tailor-made for Rohit to succeed. But then, the World Test Championships is on.

India will be playing New Zealand and Australia away from home before the final and also England and South Africa by the end of 2021. So, this is a long-term investment for India. They want a long-term opener and want to maximise the full potential of Rohit. Now the question is, can Rohit be India's openers in away Tests even if he succeeds at home? He can or cannot be. The answer to that question, for now, lies in Rohit's hands.

Despite all the fallacies, Virender Sehwag conquered the summit of Tests as an opener, so should Rohit. But for every Sehwag, we also have an Aaron Finch. Rohit would do well to pick the best from Sehwag. While the Mumbai batsman has more shots than the former opener, Sehwag had a better defence. He was smart to judge which ball to leave and which to one to go for. Defend the incoming one, put away the bad one and leave the good one was Sehwag's mantra.

Besides taking a leaf out of Sehwag's book, there's also a lot of himself that he needs to put into the process. Mainly, not compromising on his natural game. It's the flow of his batting that makes Rohit the dangerous prospect. He must keep his mind clear, continue playing his shots, albeit on the merit of the ball.

But most importantly, if he fails to click, it could be the endgame for Rohit in Tests. And at such an important crossroad, what matters the most is how badly he needs it because belief can move mountains. If it's about giving it another try, it may not work. But if it's about, taking something by the scruff on the neck, it may click for forever.

Sydney: South African great AB de Villiers will make his debut in Australia's Twenty20 Big Bash League during the 2019-20 season after signing with Brisbane Heat, the team announced on Tuesday.

File image of AB de Villiers. Reuters

The 35-year-old prolific batsman will join the Heat for the second half of the eight-team competition that runs from December to February.

Coach Darren Lehmann said he was "over the moon" to have the opportunity to work with de Villiers for the first time.

"World class players don't just come along every day and to have a player of AB's stature and skill in the BBL is a fantastic outcome for everyone, not just the Heat," he said.

"He's a 360-degree player, great skills, outstanding temperament and an insightful leader."

De Villiers played 114 Tests, 228 one-dayers and 78 Twenty20s in a 14-year career for the Proteas before retiring from international cricket in 2018.

He starred for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in this year's Indian Premier League, scoring 442 runs at an average of 44.20 with a rapid strike rate of 154.

He said the decision to join the Heat for the BBL from January, including the finals should they qualify, was an easy one to make.

"They play the kind of brand that I want to be associated with. It's quite aggressive, they go after the attack, and I'm looking forward to going to the Gabba," de Villiers said.

"It's a beautiful cricket field. It's a great wicket and games are always of a high quality."

New Delhi: The Haryana government has requested the Committee of Administrators to appoint a "supervisory committee" to run cricket in the region, reacting to reports that the state's cricket association is yet to comply with Lodha reforms.

Representational image. AFP

Representational image. AFP

A top official of Haryana Cricket Association promptly rejected the claims, saying they have already amended its constitution in line with the Supreme Court's judgement dated 9 August, 2018 and that the unit is "fully compliant".

A letter from the Principal Secretary, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Haryana government, stated that it is "seized of the situation" though it wouldn't like to "interfere in the internal affairs of Haryana and BCCI in general".

"The government requests the BCCI to appoint a Supervisory Committee for ensuring steps that would enable participation by Haryana players in the Ranji Trophy and other domestic tournaments," the principal secretary wrote.

The letter, addressed to the CoA, is in possession of PTI.

A few people in the state cricket fraternity saw the move as a deliberate attempt to stall reforms in Haryana cricket, claiming that the constitution is fully Lodha compliant.

"This is a deliberate attempt to stall the reforms in Haryana cricket and if anyone is unfair with them, they will still play fair but we will play hard. The constitution is fully compliant.

"If there is any attempt to appoint supervisory committee, it will be appropriately dealt in the court of law as it is a contempt of court," a miffed senior BCCI functionary said.

Karachi: Pakistan rode on a brilliant century from Babar Azam and fast bowler Usman Shinwari's five wickets to beat Sri Lanka by 67 runs in the second day-night international on Monday as Karachi staged its first ODI in a decade.

Azam, currently one of the best batsmen in limited overs cricket, smashed a solid 105-ball 115 to lift Pakistan to 305-7 after the home team won the toss and batted.

Shinwari then knocked off the top-order in figures of 5-51 as the visitors – depleted by the withdrawal of 10 top players who refused to tour over security fears – were bowled out for 238 in 46.5 overs.

The win gives Pakistan a 1-0 lead in the three-match series with the first ODI rained off in Karachi on Friday. The third and final match is also set for the same venue on Wednesday.

Sri Lanka were down and out at 28-5 before youngsters Shehan Jayasuriya and Dasun Shanaka staged a fightback during their record 177-run stand – an ODI record for this wicket for Sri Lanka.

Jayasuriya missed his maiden hundred by four runs while Shanaka notched his highest ODI score of 68, but both fell in the space of three balls to surrender the fight.

Jayasuriya hit seven boundaries and a six in his 107-ball knock while Shanaka had six fours and two sixes in his 80 balls.

Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed praised Sri Lanka's fightback.

"Sri Lanka fought back hard and we did not get wickets through our spinners in the middle overs," said Sarfaraz. "We batted well with Babar and Fakhar doing well."

Sri Lankan skipper Lahiru Thirimanne praised Jayasuriya and Shanaka.

"It was a great effort by Shehan and Shanaka," said Thirimanne. "Disappointing the way we batted in the first 10 overs but the two youngsters showed us how to bat and led our fight."

The match marked the first ODI cricket to be played in Karachi since the same two teams played here in January 2009, on the tour when the visitors' bus was attacked by terrorists in Lahore.

International cricket remained suspended in Pakistan for six years before Zimbabwe became the first team to play here in 2015.

Pakistan also hosted a World XI (three Twenty20s), Sri Lanka (one T20 international) and the West Indies (three T20) in the last three years.

Stringent security

Like in the recent series, Pakistan have put in place stringent security arrangements for the Sri Lankan team, with 2,000 security personnel in and around teams' hotels and stadium.

A crowd of 12,000 came to watch the return of ODI cricket to their city, weathering heat and various security check-posts, using special shuttles to reach the National stadium.

Shinwari dismissed Sadeera Samarawickrama (six), Avishka Fernando (nought) and skipper (Lahiru Thirimanne (nought) to rattle Sri Lanka to 22-4 by the eighth over.

Jayasuriya and Shanaka bettered the previous best sixth wicket stand of 159 between Chamara Kapugedera and Chamara Silva against the West Indies at Port of Spain in 2008.

It was Azam who treated the fans in the afternoon.

Azam, when on 54, became the fifth batsman to complete 1,000 ODI runs in 2019 – behind India's duo Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, and Australian couple Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja.

He added an innings-building 111 for the third wicket with Haris Sohail (40), as Sri Lankan bowlers toiled to break the stand.

It was only through an unfortunate run out that Sohail fell, leaving Azam to anchor the innings. He square cut pacer Lahiru Kumara for a boundary to complete his 11th ODI hundred off 97 balls.

Azam was finally out at deep mid-on off Kumara, cracking eight boundaries and four sixes.

Iftikhar Ahmed batted aggressively for his 20-ball 32 not out – two sixes and as many boundaries – as Pakistan made 89 in the last 10 overs.

Openers Fakhar Zaman (54) and Imam-ul-Haq gave Pakistan a solid start of 73 before Sri Lanka's best bowler, leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga, trapped Imam for 31.

Hasaranga also had Fakhar for a 65-ball 54 that was studded with six boundaries and a six. Hasaranga finished with 2-63.

New Delhi: Injured India speedster Jasprit Bumrah will be off to the United Kingdom to seek opinion on his lower back stress fracture from multiple specialists.

Bumrah has been ruled out for a minimum period of two months starting from the South Africa Test series till the end of Bangladesh series, his first major injury break in his three and half year international career.

Umesh Yadav has replaced him in the Indian Test squad for the series against South Africa.

"The BCCI is sending Bumrah to London for further treatment on his stress fracture. The NCA head physiotherapist Ashish Kaushik will be accompanying him. The BCCI has fixed appointments with three different specialists to get multiple opinion," a senior Board functionary told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"Bumrah is expected to leave on 6th or 7th October and would be there in the UK for about a week. As per the opinion of the three doctors, the next course of action will be decided upon. We have taken appointments from the best in the business when it comes to stress fractures," the official said.

Recently, senior speedster Ashish Nehra told PTI that in case of stress fracture, it is difficult to set a time-frame for comebacks as it "can vary" from player to player.

"It might be the case of Jasprit feeling good after just two months and he may not feel good even after six months. It is such an injury where you don't have any medication save proper rest and then an intense rehabilitation programme. Only a player can say when he is match-ready," Nehra had said on Sunday.

Bumrah's absence will be a big miss for India in the upcoming World Test Championship matches where they would be gunning for full points against both South Africa and Bangladesh.

The 25-year-old has been India's premier bowler for the past two years, taking 62 wickets in 12 Tests and 103 ODI wickets in the 58 ODIs. He also has 51 T20 International scalps in 42 games.

The slinger is expected to play a big part in India's World T20 campaign in Australia next year and it remains to be seen when he makes a competitive comeback.

It has been raining here regularly since the last one week and there is an 80 percent chance of showers on the opening day of the series opener.

There is 50 and 40 percent chance of rain on day two and three and play could also be affected on the final two days.

The warm-up game between South Africa Board President's XI in Vizianagram, around 50 kms from here, too was affected by rain. No play was possible on day one of the three-day game and start of day two was delayed due to a wet outfield.

India are aiming for encore against South Africa, having beaten them 3-0 at home four years ago.

Jaipur: Highly-rated fast bowler Ishan Porel came up with a six-wicket haul to star in Bengal's eight-wicket win over Jammu & Kashmir in a Vijay Hazare Trophy Group 'C' match here on Monday.

J&K batted after captain Parvez Rasool won the toss and was in trouble in the 4th over as Porel, who worked up good pace, sent back Qamnran Iqbal (1) and Shubham Khajuria, who has been in good form for a duck.

Shubam Singh Pundir followed a few deliveries later, dismissed by Ashoke Dinda for a duck to leave J&K at 7 for 3.

Rearguard action by Fazil Rashid (43) and Ram Dayal (57 not out) helped J&K reach 169.

Openers Shreevats Goswami (86, 80 balls) and Abhimanyu Easwaran (51) got Bengal off to a superb start and the team romped home in 28 overs to take 4 points.

In the other games, Madhya Pradesh thrashed Bihar by seven wickets while Gujarat outclassed Tripura by 101 runs thanks to Bhargav Merai's 125.

Brief scores: Bihar 137 all out in 40.4 overs (Ashutosh Aman 25, Shasheem Rathour 25, Mihir Hirwani 4/29, Gourav Yadav 3/41) lost to Madhya Pradesh 138 for 3 in 27.4 overs (Rajit Patidar 48, M S Raghav 46). MP: 4 points, Bihar: 0.

Jammu & Kashmir 169 all out in 48.2 overs (Ram Dayal 57 not out, Fazil Rashid 43, Ishan Porel 6/34, Ashoke Dinda 2/27) lost to Bengal 175 for 2 in 28 overs (Shreevats Goswami 86 not out, Abhimanyu Easwaran 51, Manoj Tiwary 27 not out). Bengal: 4 points, J&K: 0.

Gujarat 305 all out in 50 overs (Bhargav Merai 125 (135 balls, 13 fours), Manprit Juneja 50, Axar Patel 45, Rujul Bhatt 40, Ajoy Sarkar 3 for 68) beat Tripura 204 for 8 in 50 overs (Milind 103 not out, Mishra 62 not out, C T Gaja 2/17, R B Kalaria 2/30). Gujarat: 4 points, Bengal: 0 points.

Vishakhapatnam: There is a definite spring in Ajinkya Rahane's steps after he ended a 17-Test run of not scoring a hundred, a number which has proved to be lucky for him.

Rahane, India's Test vice-captain, was under pressure to perform in the West Indies and he delivered with an 81 and 102 in the first Test in Antigua.

Ajinkya Rahane said it's important for India to win home matches before going for away tour in World Test Championship. AP

Ajinkya Rahane said it's important for India to win home matches before going for away tour in World Test Championship. AP

"You get to learn from every match and every series and I had to wait for two years, 17 Tests, for my Test debut and for this century (in West Indies) I had to wait for 17 Tests. I think there was some co-ordination," said Rahane in Marathi ahead of the first Test against South Africa beginning here on Wednesday.

"When I was playing for Hampshire, I was thinking, when I made my debut, how my mindset was before that. In these 17 Tests, I was not getting a hundred, I was going behind getting a hundred and it was not coming.

"So, in the West Indies, my thought process was that I will not think of getting a hundred even once, whatever has to be happen will happen. If a hundred has to come, it will come," said Rahane who could not hide the excitement of becoming a father soon.

Rahane insisted that he did not work too much on his technique to get back amongst the runs.

"From outside it may look easy, for me it was about believing in my ability. Not thinking about the technical stuff, it was all about how I make the mental adjustment like handling difficult situations," said the 31-year-old.

South Africa may not have the services of star players like AB de Villiers and Dale Steyn anymore but Rahane said India cannot afford to take the Proteas lightly. India hammered them 0-3 at home four years ago.

"There are five Tests at home versus South Africa (three Tests) and Bangladesh (two Tests). Because of the Test Championship, you cannot take any team lightly. Even before the championship, we were not taking any team lightly and since the points system is involved, every match is important.

"There is a big difference between winning and drawing a Test in terms of points. When you win home Tests and then go away, there is an advantage that you have points.

"Also, the likes of Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma did well in the warm-up and Faf du Plessis is an experienced campaigner. You can't take them lightly."

The pitch for the game looks like a flat one with hardly any grass on it. India are expected to play two spinners and as many pacers.

"Depending on the conditions we will decide the combination. Hanuma (who bats at 6) can also bowl some spin and that makes a difference. In India, we hardly see three pacers playing," he added.

One of the Australian team's key players in recent years, wicket-keeper Alyssa Healy on Monday became the ninth woman to appear in 100 Twenty20 Internationals.

The 29-year-old is only the second Australian to achieve the feat after Ellyse Perry, an ICC statement said.

Healy got there during the second T20 International against Sri Lanka at North Sydney Oval.

Australia's season got underway on Sunday with the first of three T20Is against Sri Lanka in Sydney, which will be followed by a three-match ODI series in Brisbane. Healy has been one of Australia's top players in recent times and was also named the ICC T20I Player of the Year last December.

Since the 2017 50-over World Cup, she has scored more runs in limited-overs cricket than any of her Australian teammates.

She was the Player of the Series in the previous edition of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup.

Healy made her T20I debut as a 19-year-old in February 2010.

Australia is also scheduled to host India and England in a tri-series before the T20 World Cup.

Visakhapatnam: South Africa's most experienced spinner Keshav Maharaj wants to be as consistent as the seasoned Indian duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin during the upcoming three-Test series starting on Wednesday.

File image of South African spinner Keshav Maharaj. Reuters

File image of South African spinner Keshav Maharaj. Reuters

The orthodox left-arm spinner with 94 wickets from 25 Tests had a successful county performance and is hoping to make life "uncomfortable" for the Indian top-order.

"It is nice that people speak highly of you. Look at Jadeja and Ashwin. Ashwin has got a lot of variations and Jadeja keeps it simple but the key is consistency and that makes it uncomfortable for the batsmen. I can (want to) emulate that going forward and do my job from one end," said Maharaj, who is on his maiden Test tour of India.

Spin will hold key but reverse swing can also play a huge role in the series, he said. "You got to expect the ball to turn in the sub-continent and that is why people carry an extra spinner. As far as bowling to Indian batsmen goes, you can only test yourself against the best. The series will tell me how good I am and if I belong here in international cricket," Maharaj said.

"Besides spin, reverse swing will be key. Every bowling unit everywhere in the world likes to utilise if the reverse swing is available. India have got strong bowlers including Mohammed Shami, who is unplayable at times. If it starts to reverse, then we have also got amazing bowlers, who can utilise the conditions."

The South Africa pace attack comprises Vernon Philander, Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi. India will be without the services of their lethal weapon Jasprit Bumrah, who was ruled out of the series due to a stress fracture in the lower back. Maharaj said India will miss him badly.

"It is a big loss for India. He has turned the whole Test side for India in terms of playing in various conditions but let's face it India have enough quality to replace him. Umesh Yadav is another world-class bowler."

South Africa got a decent hit in the middle in the one-off practice game despite the rain with Aiden Markram (100), Temba Bavuma (87) and Philander (47) getting some much needed in the middle. Maharaj struck thrice in that game. "It was important that our batters got some time in the middle. They have been working on how to tackle Indian conditions and it is nice to get a hit."

South Africa were hammered in India four years ago with Jadeja and Aswhin wreaking havoc. Maharaj said the new-look South African team is not dwelling over the past.

"If you look at the freshness in the side, there is a hell lot of new faces and that can work for us. There is no point looking back and things may not go our way. But we are here to compete," he added.

The city has not hosted a one-day international since 2009 when Sri Lanka played two back-to-back matches at the National Stadium.

Teams have been reluctant to visit the cricket-mad country since a deadly militant attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore that year.

The first match was rained off without play, while the third and final match will be staged in Karachi on Wednesday.

The two teams will also play three Twenty20 internationals in Lahore next month.

Pakistan: Sarfaraz Ahmed (captain), Babar Azam, Imam-ul-Haq Fakhar Zaman, Haris Sohail, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Amir, Shadab Khan, Usman Shinwari, Wahab Riaz.

The T20I series between India and South Africa finished in a 1-1 result with the first match getting washed out. The focus now shifts to the longest format with three Test matches. With different personnel and things to play for courtesy the ICC World Test Championship, neither side would want to give an inch. India have already made a confident start to the Test Championship with 2-0 series win over West Indies and like India, the Proteas would be looking to get a positive start to the Championship.

With Faf du Plessis, who wasn't a part of the T20 side, joining the fold and leading the Proteas with the first Test starting from 2 October in Visakhapatnam, there is plenty of talent on display in both the squads which can produce some interesting duels.

Here's a look at some of the key battles for the India vs South Africa Test series:

Virat Kohli vs Kagiso Rabada

Kagiso Rabada will lead South Africa's bowling attack. AP

A few years ago, this could well have been a Virat Kohli vs Dale Steyn battle and it would have the cricketing world salivating. With Steyn having retired from Tests, the next fiercest bowling option for South Africa comes in the form of Kagiso Rabada. During the 2015 series, Rabada played three matches and picked up only two wickets — of Kohli in Mohali and Ravindra Jadeja in Nagpur. That series would well be remembered for the controversy surrounding the pitches prepared with most purchase coming for the spinners. Last year, a much more experienced Rabada took 18 Indian wickets at home. During the series, Rabada would pick up Kohli's wicket once again.

Both are highly gifted players and it will be a contest worth watching. They hold each other in high regard. "Rabada is a world-class bowler. He has the kind of skillset to go through any batting order on his day," Kohli had said of the 24-year-old seamer at the World Cup. Rabada recently said: "Virat is already regarded as a great of the game with some pedigree. Playing him is an opportunity to test yourself as a player."

Cheteshwar Pujara vs Vernon Philander

File image of Cheteshwar Pujara. AP

File image of Cheteshwar Pujara. AP

Another battle between an Indian batsman and a South Africa bowler which promises plenty is the Cheteshwar Pujara vs Vernon Philander one. Philander has played six matches against India, collected 28 wickets at a best of 9/75. Only two of those matches have come in India where he's picked three wickets — 3/61 in Mohali in 2015. At the other end of the pitch will be Cheteshwar Pujara. After the massive highs of the series win in Australia where Pujara played a crucial role, he scored 60 runs in two Tests against the West Indies. Not the best showing with the bat but these are still early days into the season. There's similarity in the art of the two players. Both are crafty and yet patient — a skill missing in most players in today's T20 world.

Pujara has played 11 Tests against the Proteas and scored 613 runs — 202 in India (from 4 matches) and 411 in South Africa (from 7 matches)  with a highest of 153 in Johannesburg in 2013. True to himself, Pujara has been a patient batter against Philander whenever these two have squared up. Philander has bowled 277 balls to Pujara and gone for 82 runs with 240 dots and 11 boundaries. The South African seamer has only been able to get rid of Pujara just once.

Faf du Plessis vs Ravindra Jadeja

From IPL teammates at Chennai Super Kings to foes on the international arena. Faf du Plessis against Ravindra Jadeja would also be an interesting battle, provided Jadeja takes the field. It is difficult to ascertain how India will set up in the spin department with multiple options. Faf has played nine Tests against India and scored 440 runs at an average of 27.50 with the highest score of 134. Looking at his showing in the Indian sub-continent, Faf has only 60 runs from four matches at a miserable average of 8.57. The right hander has been dismissed 14 times against India — 7 with pace and equally with spin. In India, he's been sent packing by a spinner each time — four times by the guile of Jadeja, twice by Ravichandran Ashwin and once by Amit Mishra.

Put Faf and Jadeja head-to-head and you notice that the spinner steals the show. With Jadeja's ability to get the ball to spin away from the right handed batsman or skid on off the surface, Faf has found it difficult against the left-arm spinner. Jadeja has bowled 149 balls to him and gone for just 35 runs while getting him out four times — twice he's been bowled while he's been caught and adjudged leg one time each. It was Jadeja who struck to remove Faf after a dogged effort by AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla in Delhi in 2015. Faf was looking set to stay in the middle for long having opened his account after 53 balls!

Ravichandran Ashwin vs Dean Elgar

In another battle of India's spin against South Africa's bat, Ashwin would look to show off his prowess with the ball against opener Elgar. Again, it is tough to say whether Ashwin will be part of the Test side having not been included in the two matches in the Caribbean. But if he is, he would be eager to repeat his heroics of 2015 where he picked 31 wickets to emerge as the leading wicket-taker against the Proteas.

Elgar has 344 runs from seven matches against India with 137 (in 4 matches) coming away. All four of those matches were played in 2015 where he top-scored with just 38. On the other end, 38 of Ashwin's 342 Test wickets have come against South Africa with seven coming away from home. He wreaked havoc in 2015 with 8, 4, 12 and 7 wickets respectively in Mohali, Bengaluru, Nagpur and Delhi. Ashwin boasts of a stronger record against lefties than the righties. He has 181 wickets when bowling to a right-handed batsman and 161 vs a leftie. To further highlight his ability to get early wickets, he accounts for the 1st batsman (and sixth batsman) 40 times.

Coming to a closer analysis of the two players involved, Elgar and Ashwin have faced off on 227 deliveries. The batsman has been able to add 91 runs to his career tally including eight boundaries and three sixes. But Ashwin has had the measure of Elgar on five instances — getting him bowled once and caught four times. Dilruwan Perera, Moeen Ali and Nathan Lyon are the other international bowlers to have dismissed Elgar as many times.

Melbourne: Former Australia skipper Ian Chappell believes Test cricket is threatened not just by the rising popularity of T20s but also climate change, something that the boards around the globe need to pay serious attention.

File picture of Ian Chappell. Getty

File image of former Australia skipper Ian Chappell. Getty Images

"Closer inspection of the five-day game indicates there are some serious challenges ahead. Two of the biggest concerns are the effect of the T20 game and climate change on the longer version," Chappell wrote in his column for ESPNCricinfo website.

Sharing his concerns about the future of Test cricket, Chappell said: "The effects of climate change on the game are a major concern, and the solutions rely on decisive action being taken by some annoyingly reticent politicians".

"For starters, drastic increases in temperature will add to the health dangers for players. There is nothing more frustrating than a game delayed by rain, but imagine if players are off the field because the sun burns too brightly."

The former captain, who has battled skin cancer, sad exposure to the sun for too long could make players susceptible to the ailment he has been fighting.

"That is the reality if temperatures keep rising; players will need to be protected from heat stroke or more lasting skin-cancer damage. In a litigious era, cricket boards will need to proceed with caution. It's no wonder day-night matches are considered critical to Test cricket's future," he wrote.

Concerned about the rising sea levels, Chappell said, "Then there is the concern of rising sea levels and more ferocious weather events like devastating tornadoes and cyclones. "There's also the damaging effect of reduced rainfall, which has already seen one Test-match city — Cape Town — come perilously close to running out of water in recent years.

"These are firm reminders that cricketers and administrators need to take climate change seriously," he added. The 76-year-old also pointed out the varied effects of T20 cricket on the five-day format.

"There's no doubt that the explosive nature of T20 has already had a profound effect on Test-match batting. The prevailing mindset in tricky Test match conditions is for batsmen to adopt the attitude 'I'll get them before they get me'," he wrote.

"There's no doubt that this changed approach to batting has helped boost the entertainment quotient of Test cricket and reduced the number of draws; both are positive outcomes. Even so, there needs to be some artistry in long-form batting, and if this is ignored in the search for brute strength, Test cricket will lose some of its magic," he added.

Calling on the coaches to take more responsibility for the wholesome development of batsmen, Chappell said the craft should remain technically sound. "If the blueprint for a modern batsman is a solid all-round base with the advantage of added power when required, then Test-match batting will continue to be a captivating spectacle."

"If, on the other hand, batting becomes an exercise in clearing the boundary regularly, with the accent on power, then Test-match batting will be diminished," he wrote.

After the three-T20I series between India and South Africa ended in a 1-1 stalement with the Proteas pulling off a series-leveling win in Bengaluru, the action now shifts to Visakhapatnam where the first of the three Tests gets underway.

Team India enter the Test series as favourites given their stranglehold on touring teams in recent years, their enviable home record making them something of an unbeatable side. This, despite not having star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who has been ruled out of the series due to a 'minor stress fracture' and has been replaced by Umesh Yadav.

The Proteas, on the other hand, have the momentum of their nine-wicket humbling of the hosts in the third T20I on their side, but will be well aware of the challenges that the longest format entails, especially in the subcontinent.

They had won both the T20I and ODI legs the last time they toured India four years ago, but were decisively outplayed in the Tests 0-3, which opening batsman Aiden Markram believes could still be playing on the minds of several members of the squad.

The Indian selectors had made a few changes while announcing the squad, dropping KL Rahul and giving Shubman Gill his maiden call-up in Tests. Let us take a look at five Indian players who could have a major impact in the upcoming Tests, both in terms of the series result as well as their own careers:

File image of Rohit Sharma. AP

File image of Rohit Sharma. AP

Rohit Sharma

Don’t go by the two-ball duck that he registered in the warm-up game against the Proteas. As glittering as his limited-overs international run has been, his Test career has been a start-stop one.

Rohit, thus, will be yearning to capture the opener’s slot in the longest format of the game for good when he walks out to bat in the upcoming Test series. The opportunity came about after the decline in form of the likes of Murali Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, and more recently, KL Rahul, with only Mayank Agarwal showing any kind of consistency at the top of the order in whites.

Rohit has been in fine form in white-ball cricket this year, finishing as the top run-getter in the recent World Cup after slamming five hundreds. The Mumbai batsman will hope to reign in on his instincts and cut down on the risky shots — which has led to him getting dismissed after promising starts in red-ball cricket in the past.

Ravichandran Ashwin

The Tamil Nadu off-spinner has not had the best of runs of late. Despite being one of the most prolific wicket-takers for the Indian team in recent years, Ashwin has found himself being benched more often than not, even in the Test format in which his selection was all but guaranteed not too long ago.

Ashwin sat out of both Tests in the West Indies tour, with Virat Kohli and the rest of the Indian team management opting to go with Ravindra Jadeja as the only specialist spinner in the XI to accommodate three frontline pacers.

However, Ashwin’s record at home speaks for itself, and the Indian team management is likely to revert to the Ashwin-Jadeja pair for the assignments. Expect Ashwin to go full throttle in the series and make up for the lack of game time this year.

Shubman Gill

After his ODI debut during the tour of New Zealand earlier this year didn’t quite go as per plan, Gill — one marked out by many for the future — will hope to have a better start to his Test career should he get the opportunity in upcoming Tests against South Africa after earning his maiden call-up in the format.

Gill’s confidence would have got a boost after scoring back-to-back 90s in the two unofficial Tests against South Africa A this month.

However, the only slot available for him in the XI is at the top of order, with the team management likely to try Rohit and Mayank Agarwal for the first Test, the former’s roaring limited-overs form making him a likelier candidate.

Gill’s story could however, be another success story in the making should he gets to make his debut at some point in the series.

Rishabh Pant

Pant has been one of the raging topics in Indian cricket of late along with that of the No 4 slot in the limited-overs formats — the two topics being linked to each other since it’s him who gets pushed for that position more than the others.

His shot-selection has polarised fans and experts alike. While some have warned of a ‘rap in the knuckles’ should he continued his erratic ways, others have urged the team management to show more support towards him and allow him to play his natural game.

The Delhi wicketkeeper-batsman will be hoping to put all discussions around him to an end in the upcoming series. That is if he gets picked over Wriddhiman Saha, who had cemented the wicketkeeper’s slot in the Test team after MS Dhoni’s retirement before getting sidelined due to injury last year.

Hanuma Vihari

After enjoying a breakthrough series in the tour of West Indies, Vihari could not be more excited to finally feature in whites in front of his home crowd.

Vihari was the top run-getter in the two Tests, collecting 289 runs at a stunning average of 96.33 — second only to Steve Smith in the ongoing ICC Test Championship run charts.

He finally collected his maiden Test hundred at Kingston after coming close to the milestone a few times in the past, and followed it up with an unbeaten 53 to be named Player of the Match. With the No 6 slot in the team not firmly in his grasp, the Hyderabad batsman will hope to carry the red-hot form over to the South Africa Tests.

Karachi: Sri Lanka's interim head coach Rumesh Ratnayake feels his side's trouble-free limited overs tour of Pakistan will encourage other nations to send their sides to this part of the world.

The Sri Lankan team began its tour of Pakistan on Friday, after 10 of its main players refused to travel citing security concerns.

Representational image. Reuters

Representational image. Reuters

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had initially invited Cricket Sri Lanka to play two Tests of the ICC Test Championship in Karachi and Lahore but the islanders instead opted to play a limited-overs series of three ODIs and as many Twenty20 matches.

The PCB is now looking at this tour to pass off successfully and have the Tests in December in Pakistan.

"This will be a precursor for that (Test) tour (in December). I'm sure this will certainly encourage the others (SL player, who refused to travel) to take decisions, we can't enforce it on them," Ratnayake told a media conference.

"They have taken a decision and we have to respect that, but certainly, if things go well, this series will be a huge thing for the future, not only for them but for all other countries to be here."

Much to the disappointment of the players and fans, the opening ODI was washed out due to rain and Ratnayake said the downpour has affected the team's training as well.

"It has been raining and it has been humid today. Even before we came here the preparations were hampered by rain.

"We have had only a day's training outside and today is another. The preparation hasn't been all that good but that's not going to be an excuse which I will give because they are all professional players," Ratnayake said.

Surat: The third women's Twenty20 International between India and South Africa was abandoned on Sunday, without a ball being bowled due to heavy downpour here.

Persistent rain meant even the toss could not take place. The game was supposed to start at 7 pm local time but after inspecting the conditions at 7:30 pm, the umpires decided to call off the game.

This is the second consecutive match in the series which has been washed out. The second T20 was also abandoned due to rain on Thursday.

India lead the five-match series 1-0.

The hosts managed to defend 130 in the series opener with spinner Deepti Sharma producing a match-winning effort, ending with phenomenal figures of three for eight in four overs including three maidens.

The fourth T20 is scheduled here on Tuesday.

"We need to see if India agrees to come to Pakistan for the Asia Cup. There is still some time till next year's September but by June, we have to know where we are going with this and if it can't be hosted here because of a lack of involvement of India," PCB CEO Wasim Khan said in an interview.

However the final decision to shift the tournament will be Asian Cricket Council's prerogative.

"But that is a decision for the Asian Cricket Council and ICC to make. We are ready to have India in the Asia Cup," Khan said.

Khan however acknowledged the practical problems in having any bilateral cricketing ties with India in the prevailing strenuous relationship between the two neighbours.

"Board to board level, we share a good relation with India but they have a lot of government interference and we can't keep on running after them to play a bilateral series. If they want to play they will have to tell us and give us a firm commitment. We have no issues playing at a neutral venue," Khan said.

Karachi: A top official of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has admitted that removing Mickey Arthur as head coach of the national team was a tough decision to make.

Arthur has recently spoken about the manner in which PCB's cricket committee recommended his removal after the World Cup, saying he felt let down by people he trusted most.

PCB's chief executive Wasim Khan said in an interview on Sunday that the cricket committee, which was headed by him and included Wasim Akram and Misbah-ul-Haq, had held a robust meeting and asked a lot of tough questions to Arthur, captain Sarfaraz Ahmed and former chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq during the post-World Cup inquiry.

"The first question we asked ourselves was were we happy to be number seven in Tests and number six in One-dayers. Are we happy that we have been inconsistent over a long period of time," Khan said.

"In Mickey's defence, he did a lot of good things for Pakistan cricket. But we had to make a tough decision, it's a new regime, new domestic structure and we needed to be sustainable, have a proper succession plan for our leaders and coaches in Pakistan cricket."

He noted if recommendations are being put forward to the chairman, the cricket committee has to give reasons why they need changes.

"We felt they were a number of areas where we still needed to be better at. We platued a bit whether we could get any better or that was not good enough for us we needed to make a fresh start," he said.

Khan also insisted that the ICC Test Championship is important for Pakistan and that is why it has revamped its red ball domestic cricket.

"Because red ball cricket matters to us it is the health check of any cricket playing country. ODI and T20 cricket is important I am not demeaning them but Test cricket matters to us.

Bengaluru: Chhattisgarh continued its winning run in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, beating Andhra by 56 runs in the Elite Group A game here on Sunday.

Asked to bat first, Chhattisgarh, who had stunned defending champions Mumbai on Saturday, crawled to 268/9 in their allotted 50 overs at the Alur cricket stadium II near here.

After opener Jiwanjyot Singh (16) fell early, Shashank Chandrakar (54) and one-down Ashutosh Singh (75) rallied the innings with their 50-run stand for the second wicket.

Shashank and skipper Harpreet Singh Bhatia (16) fell cheaply, but that did not deter Ashutosh from playing his shots as he completed his 50 in 71 balls. His 93-ball knock had six fours.

But the Andhra bowlers made a significant comeback as they did not allow the opposition batsman to settle. Ashutosh walked back to the pavilion, following which Amandeep Khare (27) also fell early. Then only Shashank Singh made a quick- fire 45 off 25 balls, with two fours and four sixes, to ensure that his team got past the 260-run mark.

The chase began well for Andhra as their openers conjured 48 for the first wicket before Ashwin Hebber (22) was caught by Puneet Datey off Shashank Singh. Another opener D B Prashanth Kumar (44) and K S Bharat also fell as Andhra were in a spot of bother at 90-3.

Chhatisgarh bowlers kept taking wickets at regular intervals and the Andhra innings eventually folded up at 212, way short of their target. Shashank Singh, an offie (3-37) was the pick of the bowlers, while right-arm medium pacer Puneet Datey (2-40) and slow-left arm orthodox Ajay Mandal (2 -34) grabbed two wickets each.

In another Elite Group A match at Alur, Kerala defeated Hyderabad by 62 runs, with right-arm medium pacer KM Asif shinning with the ball and returning with figures of 4-34 as he rattled the Hyderabad batting order.

And in the third match of the Elite Group A held at Just Cricket here, Goa defeated Jharkhand by 42 runs to bag four points.

Brief Scores: Chhattisgarh 268/9 (Ashutosh Singh 75, Shashank Chandrakar 54; Prithvi Raj Yarra 3-63) defeat Andhra 212 all out (D B Prashant Kumar 44, K V Sasikanth 35; Shashank Singh 3-37) by 56 runs. Chhattisgarh 4 points, Andhra 0 points.

Kerala 227/9 (Sanju Samson 36, Rahul P 35; Ajay Dev Goud 3-52) beat Hyderabad 165 all out (Tanmay Agarwal 69, J Mallikarjun 24, K M Asif 4-34) by 62 runs. Kerala 4 points, Hyderabad 0 points.

Goa 266/8 (Aditya Kaushik 117, C M Gautam 40, Rahul Shukla 6-33) beat Jharkhand 224 all out (Ishan Kishan 43, Anukul Roy 40; Darshan Misal 4-35) by 42 runs. Goa 4 points, Jharkhand 0 points.

New Delhi: Committee of Administrators chief Vinod Rai on Sunday said his panel never found any conflict of interest in having a Kapil Dev-led Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), an ad-hoc body formed to appoint the head coach of the men's team.

BCCI Ethics Officer Justice (Retd) DK Jain has issued notices to Kapil and fellow CAC members Shantha Rangaswamy and Anshuman Gaekwad for being directors of the newly-formed Indian Cricketers Association (ICA).

However, Rangaswamy has tendered her resignation after being served a conflict of interest notice on a complaint filed by Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) life member Sanjeev Gupta.

"We appointed the CAC as an ad-hoc body to specifically appoint the head coach of the men's national team. We as COA found that there was no Conflict of Interest," Rai told PTI.

It is understood that the ad-hoc CAC no longer exists after Ravi Shastri was reappointed as the head coach.

However, when Rai was asked about Jain's order, he refused to make any comment.

"The Ethics Officer's position is a quasi-judicial one. I am in position to pre-empt what order he will pass and neither am I going to do that. I just said that we as CoA never felt that Kapil, Shantha or Anshuman were conflicted," the former CAG said.

It remains to be seen if the ad-hoc body in question is non-existent, will Dev and Gaekwad reply to the notice or appear for deposition before Jain?

"I have other plans so have decided to move on. The CAC was anyway meeting once in a year or one in two years so I did not understand the conflict," Rangaswamy told PTI earlier in the day.

"It was an honour to be on the CAC committee. It will be tough to find suitable former cricketers for any administrative role in the current scenario (conflict of interest). The ICA I would have resigned anyway before the elections were held. So it was a matter of time," she added.

As per the BCCI constitution, no individual can hold more than one post at the same time. In the complaint, Gupta has claimed that the CAC members don multiple cricketing roles.

He wrote that 1983 World Cup winning captain Dev is conflicted as he is a commentator, owner of a floodlight company, member of Indian Cricketers Association, besides his CAC role.

Likewise, Gupta alleged that Gaekwad too is conflicted as he owns an academy and is a member of BCCI's Affiliation Committee.

Rangaswamy is alleged to be conflicted because of her role with the CAC and ICA.

The CAC had also picked the women's head coach W V Raman in December but at that time, it was an ad-hoc committee.

Shastri was a re-appointed for a two-year period, ending with the 2021 T20 World Cup in India. This is Shastri's fourth stint with the national team, having served briefly as the cricket manager (2007 tour of Bangladesh), team director (2014-2016) and head coach (2017-2019).

Dhaka: Indian coaches from Bangladesh's women's cricket staff will not travel to Pakistan for the international series next month amid political tensions between the neighbouring nuclear rivals, the country's Cricket Board said Sunday.

Tensions are heightened between India and Pakistan after New Delhi revoked the autonomy of restive Kashmir in early August, which was the country's only Muslim-majority state.

The women's team are due to play Pakistan from 26 October to 4 November in three Twenty20 internationals and two one-day internationals at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

The tour is still subject to security checks by Bangladesh's government before it can take place.

The governing body's chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury told AFP that if it goes ahead, head coach Anju Jain, assistant coach Devika Palshikar, and trainer Kavita Pandey will not accompany the side in Pakistan.

But they will travel with the Bangladesh team when they play the ACC Emerging Women's Asia Cup in Sri Lanka from October 20 to 28.

"We will have another team travelling to Sri Lanka almost at the same period. We've decided to send our Indian coaching staff to Sri Lanka instead of Pakistan to avoid any travel complications," Nizamuddin said.

"We have started the process. Before confirming the series we are also planning to send someone to see the security arrangement for the Sri Lanka team in their ongoing series."

Sri Lanka men's team are in Pakistan for three one-day internationals and three Twenty20 internationals.

Teams have been reluctant to visit Pakistan after 2009's deadly militant attack on a bus carrying the Sri Lankan team in Lahore.

The Bangladesh women's team last toured Pakistan in 2015.

According to Ashish Nehra, Jasprit Bumrah's stress fracture has got nothing to do with his unorthodox action.

New Delhi: Ashish Nehra, who knows a thing or two about injury management, on Sunday insisted that India's premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah's stress fracture has got nothing to do with his unorthodox action.

Bumrah was recently ruled out of both South Africa and Bangladesh series owing to a stress fracture on his lower back, with a recovery time period of two months due to early detection.

Former India left arm speedster Nehra is confident that Bumrah will be as lethal post his comeback as he was prior to injury.

"Stress fracture is unrelated to action and we must get our concepts clear. He doesn't need to change his action and if he tries to do that, it won't be great. Let me assure you when he comes back, he can bowl with same action, intensity and pace," Nehra told PTI during an interaction.

"His action is not that unconventional as it is made out to be. The alignment of his body at the time of delivery is perfect.

"The only aspect that is not copy book is his left hand (works like a pivot), which doesn't go up. Even then, his action is 10 times better than (Lasith) Malinga. Malinga's knees, back leg bends giving a look of a javelin thrower," said Nehra, known for his in-depth technical knowledge.

For someone whose career was plagued by injuries, Nehra feels that it's not always prudent to set a time frame.

"In case of stress fracture there is no time frame. Jasprit might feel good in next two months and may not feel good even after six months. So only the player knows when his body is feeling cent percent match ready," he said.

The rehabilitation is very important as this is a type of back injury that doesn't involve any surgical process.

"Stress fracture doesn't have medication. It's only proper rest and rehabilitation unlike disc injury or any nerve tissue injury," he said.

Nehra feels that an injury like stress fracture can never be apprehended and Bumrah's was the classic case.

"He had a month's break post ODI World Cup. He didn't play white ball format and came for Test matches. But that means workload was well managed but still he had that fracture. Now can you explain why?" he asked.

Nehra elaborated, "Had they not done scans, they wouldn't even had figured as players wouldn't immediately figure out they have stress fracture.

"Stress fracture is detected through bone scans and not MRI. In bone scan plates, you will see doctors pointing at various spots. These are stress spots.

"Now fast bowling is a strenuous activity and do a bone scan of any bowler and you will see those spots. Do you stop playing? It's just that you have to manage it well as some injuries are chronic," he said.

He said that too much noise is made out of workload management and according to Nehra, the more the player plays, the better he gets.

"At this stage of Bumrah's career, the more he plays, better he will get at it.

"Jassi is only 25 or 26 years old. He is playing international cricket for three years and he knows his body well. He will come back stronger and the pace in his deliveries will remain intact," " he signed off.
